WE
certainly live in interesting times and JA and our members are certainly having to embrace a new normal for the world that we once knew. Working remotely from home, board meetings via video conferencing, electronic voting for the upcoming AGM and the upcoming journal edition delivered electronically interspersed with managing home schooling is part of my new norm. Throw in Easter lunch with the family and a friendly trivia night with friends over zoom and it shows how quickly our lifestyle can change very quickly when we must. What is not new and the need for will never change is the need to say thank you and acknowledge people who have given more than most. This year at the AGM we see Trevor Saunders not re-standing for a board position. Trevor’s commitment and dedication to Jersey Australia has been extraordinarily significant and one difficult to match in longevity and success. I first met Trevor back in 2014 when I had only just started with ADHIS. Trevor was towering voice for the Jersey breed and while he no longer take the pleasure at placing a 1st aid kit in front of my spot at the table, Trevor has been a terrific and valued mentor, advisor, supporter and adversary over the many years since. Never short of a word of encouragement or ready to argue the point. I thank Trevor not only from myself but on behalf of members and staff over the many years of your service to the Association. I also thank Anthea, Jake and all the crew at Araluen Park who without there support and capacity to keep the business moving forward while your away. An off-farm commitment of any kind does not happen without great support at home. It is terrific to see that again this year we head to the ballot box to elect the Board of Jersey Australia. This is great to see members striving to be a part of the current and future direction of your Association. The AGM this year will be a little different hosted via video but also a very important step to ensure the Board and Management provides its yearly report to members. I look forward to seeing you online on the 25th of June and if you have any questions or need assistance please contact the JA office Kind Regards, Glen Barrett GENERAL MANAGER Jersey Australia

MASTITIS RESISTANCE TO UNDERPIN BREEDING PROGRAM
he new Mastitis Resistance ABV will become a “key platform” in the breeding objectives for Gippsland dairy farmers Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day. Milking about 950, predominantly Jerseys, across two farms at Shady Creek, they have been looking forward to the release of the new health trait. “I think it is tremendous,” Trevor said. “It really is a key component for genetic economic management. We won’t be using a bull under 100 for mastitis resistance going forward.” Trevor and Anthea have concentrated on breeding for protein, likeability, type traits such as strength and udders, adding fertility and cell count into the mix in recent years. They believe the Mastitis Resistance ABV will have more impact on their herd than the Cell Count ABV.
important to have good management in place.” “Nevertheless, it’s a really good development for DataGene to have a Mastitis Resistance ABV, I’ve been really keen on it right from the start.” The Mastitis Resistance ABV is one of three new or updated health traits released by DataGene on 14 April: Mastitis Resistance, Gestation Length and Calving Ease. Jersey breeders will be interested in using the Mastitis Resistance and Gestation Length ABVs to compliment on-farm management practices. Farmers milking all breeds of dairy can now select to directly improve the mastitis resistance of their next generation. Even young genomic animals now have a Mastitis Resistance ABV. Previously the Cell Count ABV was used an indirect selection criterion for mastitis resistance, but this new ABV draws on three sets of information to directly Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day will target mastitis. These only be using bulls with a Mastitis include: 305-day somatic Resistance ABV greater than 100. cell count, udder depth and clinical mastitis records. The Cell Count ABV will continue to be published as it is a useful tool to breed cows that contribute to a lower bulk milk cell count. To breed replacements with improved mastitis resistance, select animals with a Mastitis Resistance ABV of greater than 100. The new Gestation Length ABV gives farmers a breeding tool to manage late calving cows and help tighten calving patterns. An earlier calving pattern means cows are in milk for more days before
“Mastitis resistance is a significant thing for us,” Trevor said. “We were using cell count as one of our key selection criteria, but we will change that to Mastitis Resistance because it brings in more aspects, other than just cell count. For example, the Mastitis Resistance ABV includes records for clinical cases of mastitis; this makes it a significantly more rounded ABV.” While the Mastitis Resistance ABV has the potential to make huge improvements in dairy herds throughout Australia, Trevor said nothing was more important than onfarm management when it came to reducing mastitis. “Mastitis resistance is a low heritability trait, similar to fertility,” he said. “When you use it in a breeding program, it is a compounding trait and it relies on generations of use. It is still

rejoining. This gives them more time to recover after calving and get back in calf sooner. The ABV identifies bulls and cows whose calves are born earlier than their expected due date. Cows that calve earlier are in-milk for more days before re-joining and have longer to recover post-calving. To breed for a shorter gestation, look for bulls and cows with a Gestation Length ABV of less than zero. Every 1 ABV is about 1-day shorter gestation. The new ABVs published by DataGene in April are the result of DairyBio research, drawing upon records supplied by Ginfo herds. DairyBio is a joint initiative between Agriculture Victoria, Dairy Australia and the Gardiner Dairy Foundation. We also thank farmers and software providers who supply data used in genetic evaluations. The Mastitis Resistance ABV is based on the findings from the research project Health Data for Healthy Cows which was funded by the Gardiner Dairy Foundation. Gestation Length
A
ustralian dairy farmers now have a breeding tool to manage late calving cows. Launched in April 2020, the Gestation Length Australian Breeding Value (ABV) identifies bulls and cows whose calves are born earlier than their expected due date. Shortening the gestation length of a cow, or group of late calving cows, can help tighten a calving pattern. A tight calving pattern enables pasture growth to better match herd feed requirements. Earlier calving means cows are inmilk for more days before re-joining. This gives them more time to recover after calving and get back in calf sooner. The Gestation Length ABV is expressed as the number of days of gestation more, or less, than an average of 0. Bulls and cows with a Gestation Length ABV of less than 0 have a shorter Gestation Length than the average. One ABV unit represents about 1-day shorter gestation. As half the
genes come from the bull, a bull with a Gestation Length ABV of -8 would have calves that are expected to be born 4 days earlier than the due date The dairy farming profitability equation is simple for Patrick Glass. “The fewer cows we have to replace each year, the more profitable our business is,” the North-East Victorian Holstein breeder said. “The more cows we get in calf each year, the more profitable our business is as well.” For Patrick, the new traits released by
DataGene in April will help with both business goals. He’s hoping to use sires based on Australian short gestation data now the local industry has a breeding tool to help manage late calving cows. “Now we will have more trust in the claims made in Australia about gestation length,” he said Some of the short and long gestation length bulls over the years are listed in the following table:

COLAC JERSEY BREEDERS CLUB President: Des Parker – Secretary: Kerry McGarvie Life members: Bob Mellross, Anne Mercer, Ted Codling, Jim Parker and Jim & Glenda Carson
Vale - Norma Parker
With social distancing in full swing, we thought we might take a walk back through the club pages and see what members were up to .....
28/5/1940 - 27/2/2020
Back in… July 1977 On the 21st July 1977 the club meeting minutes record President Mr Basil Boardman welcoming 22 club members to the meeting, and here are some of the items on the agenda that day. The club lost a wonderful lady late in February, 2020, Mrs Norma Parker. It was quite a shock to those that were not aware that Norma had battled an illness prior, and it doesn't seem all that long ago that the Club farewelled her husband and club Life Member Mr Jim Parker. Norma is remembered as a wonderful hostess to so many Jersey events and activities over many, many years. She was caring, interested, well organised ,and very genuine. So very well liked and respected, she was someone people looked forward to talking to. She has been described simply but accurately as 'a beautiful woman'. As a wife, a mother, and a grandmother she could be found anywhere from the dairy, to the paddock, the calf shed or the house. She will be sadly missed indeed. Our deepest sympathies to Jeff and Kylie and their family at Venoma Jerseys, and indeed to all of Jim and Norma's family.
• *C.Illet reported with news from the Cattle Clubs Conference. • That 160 head of cattle had been exported to India and that more would be required. • That new President was R (Bob) Melross, ,V. Pres. W. Fisher and L. Pratt, Sec/Tres. J. Hinds. • That the World Conference Tour 1979 would be in Jersey Island. *A. McKenzie reported that committee was looking to • Recognise cows of Superior Type and Production. • That 10 years of cattle compensation had been paid to the Dept. of Agriculture. • In future any cow 4 years old or older would not be transferred unless classified atleast a C rating, and X rating would be unregistered. The members then planned for the coming 12 months, with the next meeting to be held after the Melbourne Show.

THE SWEET SMELL OF DELAYED SUCCESS
A
ndrew Marks has hardly been an overnight success in cattle showing, but the eventual rewards have been sweet. Andrew farms at Dorrigo, about an hour inland from Coffs Harbour, in a family-owned and run business with his wife Natalie and his father Warwick. He’s the fourth generation to farm the land. His interest in cows goes back as long as he can remember, or even further. “I can’t remember when I first started showing dairy cattle; I’d guess it was around eight or 10,” he said. “I was always active on the farm from four or five years old. I was with dad all the time, the same as my young bloke is now. He’s five and he’s often in the tractor with me. “It’s how you learn. The only way I learned was from watching dad. I’d see him do things a hundred times and think I could have a crack at that.” Andrew admits he didn’t have a lot of success in the early years of showing, but he’s hit a rich vein of form in recent years. “I make the joke now that it’s taken me 20 years of standing at the bottom of the line to get to the top end of the line,” he said. This year at International Dairy Week the family’s Winvarl Jersey Stud showed one cow they owned and another in partnership with Simon and Tekoa Atkins of Oakleigh Downs Jerseys, Kingsvale Premier Madge, who won and was best udder in the five-year-old class and was also reserve champion at the Jersey State Show in 2019. Winvarl Plus Diamond was seventh in a class of 14 at IDW. “We were happy with that because it was one of the strongest classes,” Andrew said. In 2018 in the Jersey Australia On-Farm challenges they had three

class winners in the Great Northern Challenge, Mikandan Barnabas Mabel 2390 won the 3-year-old class, Winvarl Plus Diamond won the 4-year-old class and Mikandan Surefires Mabel 2190 won the Mature cow class and was supreme champion of the Great Northern Challenge. Diamond went on to become the Great Australian fouryear-old. “I’ve really concentrated in the past four or five years on my breeding program, the bulls I use and I’ve brought in a few cows with good genetics from herd dispersals,” Andrew said. “I’ve been looking for cows that are positive index for milk, positive stature, chest-width and cows with high-indexing udders.” He uses “a bit from all of the companies” when it comes to genetics. “I do my own thing; try to pick the best of everything.” The COVID-19 pandemic has put a hold on showing this year. “We should be at the Sydney show at the moment,” he laments. The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2020 // 12
The virus has also stalled Andrew’s training to become a Jersey Australia classifier, although he plans to continue in the field. “I was suggested by one of the other classifiers,” he said. “A few classifiers are going out of dairy or looking to retire, so they’re looking to bring in a few younger blokes.” Andrew was keen to take up the option. “It’s good for my own learning; the day you stop learning is the day you might as well give it all away. “It’s good to get out and about and see different cows and different bulls getting used. “You might be going to a farm to look at cows but you’ll see something totally unrelated, maybe a bit of gear a farmer has made or the way he does something, and you think I could try that at home.” Andrew has attended a couple of class field days, scoring cows alongside others and having results collated and assessed against other experienced judges.
However, the training was firstly curtailed by fires and more recently by the virus. “Last spring, I was supposed to go out with another classifier to do in-thefield training but we had the fires here,” Andrew said. “We didn’t get hit ourselves but there were fires in every direction around us. We’re in a rainforest area and the fires were burning in there. Dad could only remember a few little fires in there 40 years ago, nothing like anything we had last year.” The fires were a “double whammy” following drought, although in some cases, the dry conditions meant no fuel for the fires to burn. Now the virus has slowed the training. “There was a field day planned on March 20 but it was cancelled,” Andrew said. “It’s a bit of a bugger now because of the virus; we’re going nowhere at the moment. “We’ll get back to normal eventually but I don’t think it’s going to be a very quick process. For my day-to-day farming, it’s no different me because I don’t go many other places.” The elements have been tough for the Marks family, but they’ve adjusted to the challenges. In the first two months of this year they had more rain than all of last year. “It was too much,” Andrew admitted. “We’ve had about 1600mm so far this year and the annual average is two metres.” But he remains confident. “With the drier conditions, we got through okay. We got short on water towards the end of it but we had invested more in irrigation and built a couple big dams when it was dry so we have enough irrigation to keep us going. Before we were tight; now I’m confident.” Jerseys have always been a part of the family farm. “For our conditions and our country – it gets pretty steep here and really steep in places – they just handle the conditions better,” Andrew said. “They don’t break down as quickly as other breeds and they are higher in fat and protein. We supply Norco and get paid fat and protein incentives.” They milk about 200, including a few Ayrshires and Holsteins but 90 per cent of the herd are registered Jerseys.
Andrew and Natalie with co-owners Simon and Tekoa Atkins of Oakleigh Downs Jerseys with their successful Kingsvale Premier Madge. Inset: Kingsvale Premier Madge.
“It was a pure Jersey herd before Natalie added a few Ayrshires because she likes them,” Andrew said. Although they don’t herd record so don’t have exact figures, the Jersey cows are averaging around 6000 litres per lactation. “We’re really happy with that,” Andrew said. “It’s definitely gone up every year in the past five to 10 years. We’ve done a few different things, like starting to grow corn silage and just feeding cows better.”
The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2020 // 13
They have a separate farm running a commercial beef herd. Though dairy remains the biggest operation, the last lot of steers sold fetched more than double what they were getting six years ago. Although in his early 70s, Warwick remains very active on the farm. “He’s still the mainstay of the whole operation; he’s as fit as me, if not fitter,” Andrew said. The Winvarl Jersey Stud was founded in the early 1940’s on family, with each letter coming from a family member’s first name. Andrew and Natalie hope the family tradition continues, with Bailey, 5, and Matilda, 4, already keen to help around the farm. “I hope one day they are as interested as I am,” Andrew said.

TREVOR’S PLACE IN HISTORY
T
revor Saunders has a special place in Jersey Australia’s history as the first president of the newly formed national organisation in 2008. But his legacy goes much deeper than that, as does his contribution to the breed over the past 25 years. Trevor, 62, has decided to retire from the Board of Jersey Australia but his love for Jerseys and the broader industry remains strong. Trevor and his wife Anthea Day will continue farming at Shady Creek near Warragul in Victoria’s Gippsland region. “I’ve loved being on the Board and it’s been easy because it’s my passion and what I wanted to do,” Trevor said. “But we’re running a big operation and want to concentrate on that. Anthea and I want to travel and there’s a myriad of things we want to do together, so I’m confident the time is right.” Born and raised on a farm, Trevor came up through the ranks of share farming before he and Anthea invested in their current property in 2004. His love of cows was a prime motivator, though it wasn’t always Jerseys. “We had a Jersey herd when I was a little boy, but by the time I left home Dad had brought in cross-breds and Friesians,” he said. “I didn’t start with Jersey cows but I became convinced in the 80s that Jerseys were more efficient and easier to work with. By 1990 I had enough Jerseys in the herd and registered them through genetic recovery and my involvement started from there.” Trevor and Anthea now milk 1000 cows over two farms, including 650 on the home farm. It’s a partnership in all ways. “Without Anthea, none of this would have happened,” Trevor said. “We milk alongside each other, she rears the calves and she’s my greatest support, like a lot of partners are. We work so well together as a team.”
Their main stud, Araluen Park, has had many successes over the years, though Trevor is typically modest. “We’ve been very lucky; we’ve had three Great Southern winners and we’re currently milking seven former number one genomic heifers. We’re comfortable with what we’re doing and with our production. It’s a developing farm; we’ve grown fairly quickly over the past five years, effectively taking
The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2020 // 16
it from a milking herd of 300-350 to over 1000 but there’s always room for improvement.” They also have a smaller stud Stony Run Aus with an American partner. The expansion reflects their confidence in the industry, and Trevor and Anthea plan to continue running the business and breeding good cows. Trevor will remain senior vice president of the World Jersey Bureau
until the next conference in Australia, which is slated for 2021 but might be deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will continue on the genetics standing committee of DataGene. “I love being involved with the standing committee; genetics is my thing and I hope to do that for as long as I’m allowed,” he said. Trevor joined the Victorian branch of the former Jersey Breeders Society in 1995. “The community I was living in had a couple of Jersey breeders and they talked me into going to a discussion group. I’ve always been a little outspoken!” By that time, Trevor was convinced that because of their size, Jerseys
were significantly more effective and profitable. As a Victorian delegate, Trevor set about driving the establishment of a national body. “Plenty of people told me it would never happen but I believed it was needed,” he said. “The states used to fight and it had stopped growing the breed. There were both Internal and external reasons for going national. We needed common policies across the board and we needed to have price structures and common aims and goals to grow the Jersey breed. There was no cohesion as it was. “Externally, no-one knew who to talk to, but all of a sudden there was a national phone number for a national body with a national office. The industry suddenly became totally involved with us and we had all these partners in the dairy field. “There were a few who grizzled about it but most accepted it. It just needed someone to bring a team together to do it.” Trevor became the first Jersey Australia president in 2008 and held the role for five years through the establishment phase. “It was very challenging and confronting at times, but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world,” he said. “We achieved what we needed to achieve in the first couple of years to get it going and we worked well with the first general manager Scott Joynson. I’ve got more out of it in terms of selfdevelopment than what I put in.” After his term as president, Trevor was encouraged to continue on the Board. “I never planned to stay on but I just kept getting pulled back,” he said. “There were still things to do and I was keen to get involved with industry and Agri-Bio.” Apart from his central role in establishing Jersey Australia and ensuring it developed a strong asset base, Trevor is proud of his part in developing a national dairy genetics hub in the current office. “I felt I could have some input into making that happen. That was not only good for Jersey Australia and Jersey cows and people but good for the entire Australian genetic industry. We’re all
The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2020 // 17
working together for genetics, which is an understated part of our dairy business.” Trevor has no doubt the breed has improved. “There has been massive improvement in the Jersey cow from when I started my herd in the 1980s. What we’ve got now are super production cows with power, width and amazing udders. Their ability to produce now wasn’t considered possible back then.” Trevor is confident Australian Jerseys are the best in the world. “Anthea and I have been to every significant Jersey country except Canada and I can unequivocally say that what we have here are easily the best cows, especially considering the variation in systems that we have. “In terms of their strength, capacity, udders, front-end and muzzles, there’s no doubt we have the best Jersey cows in the world. I’m quite happy to brag about that.” Trevor is confident he’s leaving Jersey Australia in good hands. “We have some fantastic people on the board and Glen is the ideal general manager. I’ve done my time and know I’m leaving it in immensely capable hands. “I’m leaving on the very best of terms and I’m only a phone call away if they need, not that I think they will. “I feel very privileged to have worked with a large number of passionate Jersey breeders who have been prepared to put Jerseys first and work with the wider dairy industry.”
LEADER OF THE PACK Trevor Saunders might say that establishing Jersey Australia was a team effort, but every team has to have a leader. Jersey Australia president Chris MacKenzie says Trevor was firmly at the helm as the new nation-wide organisation was born. “He and Peter Farrell did a lot of homework to get support from members to bring the states into one body with a single administration and establish Jersey Australia,” Chris said. “He’ll say it was a team effort, but he was the team leader.”

Chris said the initiative continued to pay dividends for the breed. “Absolutely, it was the right way to go,” he said. “It gave Jerseys recognition and proper representation in the industry; we became a national body and we were accepted as such. We get to places now that we weren’t able to before. “Trevor leaves a lasting legacy, there’s no doubt about that.” Chris said Trevor’s contribution continued over the years, including representing Jersey Australia on a number of industry groups and committees, playing a leading role in setting up Dairy House, bringing together Jersey Australia, Holstein Australia and DataGene, and as Oceania vice-president for the World Jersey Cattle Bureau. And he always does his bit to promote the breed. “When he comes back from the world conferences, he always says we have the best Jerseys right here in Australia,” Chris said. During the years of working together, Chris has been impressed by Trevor’s willingness to express his opinion on various topics. “He’s always out to help Jerseys in whatever way he can. He brought Jersey Australia into reality and should be proud of his role in such a great 2020 A G M milestone.”

Changes to Embryos Previous advice relating to the expected unavailability of Microsats in the very near future is not changing member practices in confirming parentage by changing to SNP/ Genotypes instead of the more traditional Microsats leading to a high-level concern that parentage will not be able to be appropriately confirmed on future ET animals and registrations provided. To ensure that parentage conformation can continue to be accurately achieved long term, the Board of Jersey Australia has introduced a new requirement mandating that all Sires and Dam used to produce embryos are required to have a suitable SNP / Genotype to be Able to confirm parentage of any resulting progeny.

I doubt there has ever been a Jersey Stud that can claim as many Championships at Melbourne Royal along with Sydney & Adelaide as Raywyn. Keith and Irene, as you can see bred to a bloodline. Their presentation of their large teams at shows was in their time simply outstanding – spotless! It is also worth noting that they also showed a few Ayrshires under the Silver Glen prefix, a bull SG Fortune who sired many Champions at Adelaide Royal for the Davis family. Irene and her daughter Cheryl became famous for showing Poultry winning all over Vic & NSW, many times winning Bird of Show when over 700 were exhibited along with countless wins with cooking at Gippsland shows.
