O

ur AGM and Board elections have been held on June 25th, and what excites me the most is that through COVID-19, JA has embraced positive changes that only a few short months ago the consideration to do such things would have been shut down: •

The May – June Jersey Journal was delivered electronically

Our Board elections used online voting

The AGM was held via video conferencing technology

These three critical elements of JA, while a high priority for the Board and Management to return to more traditional formats, does allow us to look at how the membership has embraced these changes and look to see how we incorporate these changed practices into our business model moving forward. Over 650 people have read the May/June Jersey Journal online, up from the usual online readership of 150-200 people. 55% of eligible members voted in this year’s election, significantly up on the previous 2 years’ voter turnout of 33%. 59% of all votes were lodged using the online voting platform. While there was no increase in the number of members attending the AGM, what was exceptionally pleasing was the number of members who embraced video conferencing technology successfully for the very first time, but even more pleasing was to see a number of members who had not been present at the AGM for some time taking the opportunity to actively contribute. JA congratulates and thanks all members for embracing these changes to ensure we can continue to deliver our critical services and functions to members through the COVID-19 pandemic. As we look to the future, it gives us food for thought that some members may want to continue to receive their Jersey Journal and voting options electronically rather than in print, and that providing video conferencing facilities for the AGM is a great way to provide an attendance option for members who can’t be there in person. The Board of JA is already operating via video conferencing as standard procedure, and we will continue to use this technology for future meetings to minimise the time needed for Board members to be away from their farm business and families. ersey Australia are pleased to announce a partnership with Australia’s leading farm safety solution, Safe Ag Systems. This collaboration will allow us to leverage the expertise of Safe Ag Systems and through the Jersey Australia network, raise awareness about workplace safety risks affecting Australian Dairy Farmers. Co-founded by Caroline Graham and daughter Katy Landt in 2016, Safe Ag Systems are committed to the promotion and prevention of workplace accidents in the agriculture industry. Safe Ag Systems offer ongoing education, individual support and up-to-date information when it comes to your Work Health and Safety obligations for your business. The company also offers a practical digital solution to help facilitate these obligations which is simple to implement and extremely cost effective. “Our goal is to reduce administration and make workplaces safer,” Katy says. “We understand the industry and we understand productivity over paperwork”. Jersey Australia’s General Manager, Glen Barrett highlights the importance of improving industry standards and recognises while each workplace is presented with unique challenges, advocates the benefits of working together to maximise success. “Getting the right safety management system in place and maintaining it to a quality standard can be a legal minefield and a time consuming, costly exercise”, says Glen. “Simplifying safety management on farms through the

use of standardised procedures appears to be the most costeffective way to manage safety in agriculture”. As the industry becomes more reliant on digital data and staying connected, Jersey farmers are moving towards a more streamlined approach to record keeping and safety management. Common goals to improve safety management without impacting productivity is key to the success of implementing a digital solution. Key benefits of this partnership: We have done the searching for you, Safe Ag Systems is an easy solution for you to setup and maintain an active safety system for your agribusiness. South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club Inc

PRESIDENT: BRIAN LAUNDER | SECRETARY: TANYA PRIVITERA | TREASURER: ALEX MATHEWS

Aaron Thomas… Aaron Thomas shares an inspirational story both bravely and candidly; a story of despair, resilience and overcoming.

As Aaron grew up in the Yarram District he and his three siblings milked cows at local dairy farms to make some pocket money. This gave Aaron his first taste of the dairy farming life and he now works with his good friends, Paul and Lisa Mumford on their farm in Won Wron. Aaron began experiencing a sense of crippling despair after a series of deaths in his family. First losing his grandmother and then nursing his mother, his best friend, through her battle with cancer; a disease that eventually took her life. It was Aaron’s separation from his partner and their three children in 2016 that eventually caused the spiral downward in Aaron’s mental state. ‘Alcoholism for me was the medication. Depression is like getting dunked by a wave and when you come back to the surface, you get smashed again. I could always give people advice, but wasn’t prepared to get any myself’. However, alcohol proved fruitless in helping Aaron gain control of his mental state and eventually he attempted to end his own life. Two separate attempts were both times thwarted by unexpected interruptions. A couple of weeks after Aaron’s second suicide attempt Paul went with him to the local GP who immediately set up a mental health plan. Aaron slowly began to piece his life back together. He also went cold turkey on the alcohol. Although he was terrified of what people would think of him, he showed great resilience and fought harder than he ever had before now speaking openly of his experiences with depression. Aaron is currently focusing on something very close to his heart, raising money for cancer research. Aaron has been selected to ride in the Tour De Cure, from Newcastle to Noosa Heads, hoping to raise over $12,000. As well as his public speaking work, Aaron also works full time on his farm milking 400 head and co-parents his daughters. He still checks in with his mental health support networks and continues taking a smaller dose of his antidepressants daily. Aaron wants his story to be told to raise awareness and to help others suffering through this debilitating illness. To Aaron, mental health is just as important as physical health, and he takes both very seriously. Aaron knows what it means to fight for his life. He has traversed through total darkness and despair and come out the other side.

ABS wants more breeders to genomically test

Demand for Australian Jersey Bulls continue to grow both domestically and internationally however there remains an ongoing challenge to get Breeders to take the 1st step in the search for the next AI superstar by pulling some tail hairs and getting a genomic test. In this July / August edition we have sat down with a number of AI companies with Australian Jersey Bulls in their proven and genomic bull teams dominating the Jersey scene both here in Australia and abroad and had a chat with them on what they are looking for in a bull, cow families and breeders that have had an impact on their business and what should a breeder do to take the 1st step in getting your stud on a pathway to an AI programme. And remember it’s not always about a high index score with great opportunities available for trait leader bulls in Fertility or Type etc or A2/A2 or Polled. To find out more on how to get started on genomic testing your young bulls or heifers contact the JA office and we will get you on the way.

ersey breeders are starting to look for slightly larger cows with longer teats, and ABS Australia wants more to get involved in genomically testing their bulls. ABS Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said demand had changed in recent years, but Jersey farmers would have more options if more of them took up testing. “It can get a little bit frustrating,” Bruce said. “I know it can be a bit daunting waiting for results to come back, but we can do a lot our end to help them get the tests going. “The more Jersey young bulls we can test, the more chances we’ll find some pretty unique pedigrees. “Testing more cows and bulls adds to the reference population; strength in numbers gets results and adds more reliability to the Jersey proofs. “We’re basically asking every farmer with bulls to genomically test them.” Farmer needs are changing. “Jersey breeders today are looking for a taller statured Jersey with more strength, with a thinking a more capacious animal has the potential to produce more.” The Australian Jersey Journal – July-August 2020 // 14

Longer teat length is another key criterion for farmers. “Breeders don’t want cups to keep falling off in the shed,” he added. Bruce said there were close family relationships among Jerseys and they were looking for outcrosses. “There are about 3-4 key sires in Jerseys at the moment, with bulls like Valentino and Elton who have had a big influence on the breed over the last four or five years, so we need an outcross sire that brings something a little different and a bit more stature.” Bruce has been working for ABS for nearly 20 years and since 2007 has been coordinating the Jersey young sire program. ABS has had a long-standing relationship with Central Sires Cooperative, working together to select young sires out of elite cows and elite genomics and marketing their bulls.

The biggest change in his time has been the introduction of genomics. “Before genomics it was almost solely selected on cow families and 1015 Jersey bulls sampled through us. Genomics has changed that.” With less farmers, there are now only 7-8 bulls in work but some are staying for longer. “When we get a young bull in, traditionally they were only in production for 12 months and people sat back and waited for the daughters to be milking,” Bruce said. “Now, the same bull is used a couple of years in a row, as long he’s still relevant.” Elton, a Central Sires/ABS bull, stands at the top of the tree. “Elton was phenomenal and was in the top rankings for about 10 years. He came out of the program before genomics. If he was still alive, he’d be an unbelievably big seller. He still sits there in the top group…he was a freak,” Bruce said. But ABS/Central Sires still have quality in the ranks, boasting the number 5,6 and 7 genomic bulls currently in Australia. In fifth spot is CSC Dynamite, followed by CSC Jamieo and CSC Toyota. “CSC Toyota has come from a cow family not well known in the Jersey breed, which is good,” Bruce said. “The farmer was genomically testing and we found this bull and he turned out to be one of the highest Daughter Fertility bulls at 107. “Jamieo and Toyota are also from a farm that hadn’t bred many bulls but we’re very impressed with what they offer for the industry.”

“We want to get the message out that more farmers want polled genetics. We’ve seen massive growth in polled in Holsteins in recent years but the Jersey breed hasn’t been breeding many bulls in the polled space.” Bruce said that having more polled animals would help the industry. “If you can produce a polled animal through breeding, you don’t have to dehorn those calves which improves community perception, avoids any animal stress and there’s a cost benefit for farmers,” he said. He also hopes Jersey breeders can produce more proven genetics. “It’s always a struggle and it’s not just a Jersey issue. With changes within the industry and with indexes, a lot of these

young bulls lack a bit of substance.” ABS works closely with several breeders, such as Paul Lenehan of Murray Brook Jerseys. “We’ll now have three sons from his herd going into A.I: CSC Shadow Man, CSC Jamieo and CSC Motown coming in spring that we found by testing. Bruce said farmers had nothing to lose by testing. “ABS pays for the tests so farmers don’t have to fork out money and our guys can go out and pull the hairs. All you have to do is keep the calf until the genomics come back and we agree to take the bull or not. If the bull meets our criteria we can negotiate from there and make an agreement to market that bull.”

Dealing with the lucky country

for the Jersey breed internationally, including New Zealand.

Total Livestock Genetics (TLG) is helping breeders look at international opportunities in the northern hemisphere and closer to home.

Paul said that Australian Jerseys have a good platform for further engagement, and the COVID-19 situation has sparked even stronger interest.

Locally the team is offering some exceptional candidates from strong maternal lines while trying to uncover “hidden gems”. TLG sales manager Paul Douglas says there are also strong opportunities

“There’s an opportunity for breeders and we hope to help them take that opportunity with a concerted effort to evolve the genotype,” he said.

“We’re getting more and more inquiries internationally. The Australian dollar helps in the export situation, providing the quality of animal is there, and our privilege of

ABS is hoping to address demand and industry requirements by pursuing various key indicators. “A2 is critical for us and 90 per cent of the bulls we bring in and market are A2,” Bruce said. Daughter fertility is also critical and on a lot of farmers’ agendas. “When we’re selecting bulls, we always look at where daughter fertility ranks,” he said. Farmers are also looking for polled stock. “Polled is something farmers are looking for, but it has been a challenge to find polled bulls,” Bruce said.

There is a lot of water between us and other countries and that has been helpful. A lot of people know we’re lucky and would like to deal with the lucky country.” TLG is doing ‘conversions’ to US data on some Jersey maternal lines which provides a reference to additional opportunities for Australian Jerseys in the US and other international markets. “To evolve the opportunity for northern hemisphere interest, there are strategies that we can apply to screen potential candidates or nominees,” Paul said. “We are analysing evolving genotypes with overseas markets in mind and are working with Australian breeders and overseas businesses to predict equivalent genetic standards to each respective country. We can present the Australian data, but to

assist in international engagement, it is good to present a respective country equivalent. “Overseas businesses are looking at genetic diversity. By applying this approach, we can provide another avenue for international support for Australian Jersey maternal lines. TLG has a foundation in animal genetics and reproduction expertise which continues to evolve. This includes the provision of embryo transfer and IVF services, genetic development programs for the dairy, beef and sheep industries, as well as live export. Paul says that applied science is at the core of this progression. “We are science orientated in working with and developing genetic maternal lines,” he said. “There is lots of tremendous maternal line diversity available within Australian herds. Some have profiles and are well known, but there are some hidden gems”. number of herds. One such family is the Vanessa family originating from Wayne Barton’s herd in South Australia. Technical developments have revolutionised the field, but some things don’t change. “The advent of genomics hasn’t changed how we view bull mothers,” Peter said. “A good rule of thumb is to

“Part of the challenge is trying to find the hidden gems through data analytics, as well as working with the current high-profile maternal lines.” TLG says it is delighted with the completion of the April 2020 proof run, which it says has some exceptional candidates available for consideration. “Working within genetic standards for both the Australian and International analysis systems, we believe that the TLG sire team offers the opportunity to incorporate these high-level sires within herd development programs. “Every breed has its strengths and protecting and optimising the genotype is our responsibility,” Paul said. “There are certain elements in the Jersey breed we need to be aware of and try to protect as part of the genetic development sphere. “That’s part of our philosophy in developing genotypes that we then present commercially to the Australian and International marketplace”

ask the questions, “would I be happy and would it be profitable to milk a herd of cows like her? Does she have the traits that will contribute to a long and profitable life?” “In the pre-genomic era, we would evaluate the bull mother and hope that she would pass on some of her elite characteristics to her grand-progeny.

“We are always happy to genomically test young Jersey bulls,” Peter said. “My advice to breeders is not to overthink it,” he added. “It is sometimes surprising where and when interesting young bulls pop up. So, if you were thinking of keeping a bull calf, get in touch and provided the sire and dam of the calf is ‘in the ballpark’ for BPI, we will organise the testing. The more bulls we test, the better the outcomes for everybody!” Peter said that Genetics Australia was always looking for new options. “There are any number of cow families that we are interested in and we are always looking for new and different families,” he said. Peter says that most families are unique to particular herds although there is the odd family that for whatever reason, appears to be prominent in a

diversity through genomics has not been realised as the technology appears to drag us more in the direction of common pedigrees rather than unique pedigrees. Genetics Australia has established enduring relationships with breeders. “There are almost too many to name and if I do, I will leave someone out,” Peter joked

Now we look at the bull mother and ask the question, does she reflect the genomic proof of her son?

However, he did want to acknowledge the contribution of Jersey stalwarts who are leaving the industry this year. Bernie and Carol McManus of Bercar Jerseys have been strong contributors to G.A programs over the years.

Genetics Australia says BPI as the industry endorsed profit index becomes a bit of a first cut when it comes to key indicators, however it is no the be all and end all.

“They have been long-term young sire users and at the same time have provided bulls from their outstanding “B” and “P” families. A highlight for Bernie and Carol was the sire PASSIVE,

Bernie McManus pictured with PASSIVE, one of his stud’s great success stories.

“These days we find ourselves looking further down the list to find bulls with the balance of traits that both the domestic and export market is demanding. A2, Type, Fertility, Health and positive production are all very important. Marketability – and a good dam photo – are critical. “A marketable cow family, with previous performance and a good dam photo make life a lot easier, especially when exporting,” Peter said. “Polled is becoming more and more important as well. When we are selecting our young bulls, each bull needs to have “an angle”. He needs a particular trait that he is associated with, like ASKN and Type or MRFERTILITY and Fertility. Of course, there are areas that can be improved. “Fertility from a breeding value sense appears to be an issue, however actual Jersey fertility performance is still better than many other breeds,” Peter said. “In saying that, there is no breed in the world where fertility could not be improved and bulls like MRFERTILITY provide a solution in this space,” he added. Mastitis resistance is an area of concern that the industry needs to focus on. The perennial problem of inbreeding and lack of pedigree diversity has become heightened with the arrival of genomics. It is fair to say that the promise of greater pedigree

gri-Gene has some of the best performing Jersey bulls in Australia, but the best might still be on the way. Agri-Gene general manager Chris McIlroy hopes a new generation of bulls will add more versatility to the breed and broaden the bloodlines on offer. With interest growing from overseas, particularly the United States, AgriGene is encouraging all Jersey bull owners to do genomic testing. “It’s a feather in the cap for Australian jerseys in that the US is looking to Australia as a source for Jersey semen,” Chris said. The interest has sparked a push for new genetics. “We’re really looking for out-crossed genetics now,” Chris said. “We need to test more bulls and we need to get away from T Bone and Valentino bloodlines in particular. They have been great but we’re so full of those bloodlines that we need an outcross to use over them. Australian dairyfarmers have got those bloodlines all through their herds so they need a bull to go over those cows. “We need to genomically test more bulls to find those that may be potential A.I. sires. “If you’ve got bulls out of cows that are high indexing and high classifying The Australian Jersey Journal – July-August 2020 // 17

that we might be interested in, let us know and we’ll test them.” Jerseys have a special place in AgriGene operations. The privately-owned company was founded about 30 years ago by Chris’ father, Albert, who owned the Edi Jersey stud. Chris is impressed with the current line-up of Australian jerseys, and AgriGene has many in the top rankings with the number one and number two genomic BPI bulls, the number one polled genomic bull and number four proven genomic bull. All are Australian bulls. “I think with Australian Jerseys, our team is as good as any on offer at the moment,” he said. Publican is the number one BPI sire from Con Glennen’s White Star Jerseys in south-west Victoria. The number one polled BPI bull is Kingsville Madill from Rob and Kerrie Anderson of Kings Ville Jerseys in Gippsland. A promising new bull who just made his first batch of semen in June is Kings Ville Boast, who is the number two genomic BPI sire. “He’s only 11 months old and he’s made freezable semen,” Chris said. “He’s a Publican son out of Madill’s mother so he has a good pedigree out of a strong cow family. We are always

“Everything’s a bit more challenging with bringing semen in and particularly with getting it out,” Chris said.

looking to source bulls out of strong proven cow families.”

says the quality of Australian Jersey genetics is outstanding.

Agri-Gene also has the number four proven Jersey bull on BPI, Bontino from the Carson family’s Cairnbrae Jerseys.

“There has been definite breed improvement over the years, which has led to the increase in global interest,” he said. A good example is Bontino, which had sexed semen sent to the US and the UK during June.

“They’ve all got strong proven cow families behind them, which is what we’re looking for when we’re sourcing bulls,” Chris said. Another advantage is that they are all A2 bulls. “There are that many bulls around that if you can have one that’s A2, it’s another string to their bow,” Chris added. Agri-Gene is looking for bulls with a good mix of production and type, with good fertility traits. Fertility, in particular, is a trait that needs to improve, but overall, Chris

“There are a lot of bracket bulls in the US that can’t be registered because they have Holstein content in their pedigree,” Chris said. “People are looking for pure bulls so they can use them in registered jersey herds and they’re not finding them in the US as they have previously, so they are looking to Australia as a source.” One of the challenges has been getting the semen to overseas markets during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were unable to send ‘dangerous’ goods on a flight out of Australia so we used a vapour shipper and, in one case, a boat.” Agri-Gene says Jersey farmers could make a good investment in their future and the future of the breed by doing more genomic testing. “We used to progeny test young bulls and sell straws and wait for the daughters to come in, and you wouldn’t know for four years if the bull was any good,” Chris said. “Now we can get a genomic test of a young bull calf a week old and find out his genomic proof. The generation interval is certainly speeding up. “Australian Jerseys are in a good position and we’ve got a team at the moment that is second to none. “Exporting Australian Jerseys is good for everyone.” JJ

We all have been waiting quite some time for a young sire of this magnitude! To me Ferdinand combines an extremely nice blend of production and type backed by one of the world’s most elite cow families, The Fernleafs. Breeders all over the world have waited in anticipation for a bull from this family for some time. His Dam is destined to be an EX cow which will make her an 8th Generation EX. Myself and many other top breeders have admired this cow to be a two time class winner at the Australian National Show and Intermediate Champion. She is sired by one of the hottest show cow bulls Down Under in the last 10 years, Celebrity. On the top side I have seen several milking daughters by Ferdinand’s sire Viral. He displays extreme components of both fat and protein and certainly is making the right kind. Look for Ferdinand to sire that deep open ribbed framed cow that has paper thin silky hide and superior udders that we all love! - Michael Heath

Taking the next Step Ever since he was a little boy all Jake ever wanted to do was become a dairy farmer. Growing up Jake enjoyed being a part of the Gippsland Dairy Youth group attending their farm visits, youth training days and the Youth Show they would hold throughout the year. Jake loved showing his heifers each year at the Youth Show and was the inaugural winner of the Rising Star Award. After finishing his schooling Jake completed his Cert 4 in dairy before beginning work with Hayden and Danielle Dodd on their dairy farm. From the age of 16 Jake would spend many of the harvest seasons working for a contractor. Along the way he became friends with and worked with a guy simply known as Pommy. It was through Pommy that Jake Mathews Jake got the opportunity to spend 13 months in England where he worked for a contractor in Bromsgrove, Worcester. Upon returning home Jake got back to dairy farming and working his way to one day owning his own herd. It was at the age of nine that Jake picked from a line of heifers his first Jersey, sired by Dillon. Jake named this calf Bluegum. She was then put through the genetic recovery system and Bluegum Park Jerseys began. Bluegum was the beginning of what became a very solid foundation family. The highlight being Bluegum Park Jacinta Bluegum Ex93 who is still in the herd at 12 years of age and about to have her 9th calf. Having won her On Farm challenge Class 3 times and also being a finalist at the Great Southern Challenge she has given Jake a lot of enjoyment of the years. Another current herd favourite is Mikandan Galaxies Rose 336 Ex92 having won the 5yr old class in the CGJBC and going on to represent the club in the Great Southern Challenge. Rose also made the trip to IDW in 2018 where she placed 3rd as a Snr 3yr old. Jake has always believed depth of cow families is very important and has tried to purchase females from strong maternal lines as he developed his herd. Some of the cow families Jake has acquired along the way and is currently working with are Hattie, Daisy, Caramel and Opal. In recent years Jake began training to become a Jersey Classifier. During this time Jake showed a great understanding and eye for a cow which lead to being a fully qualified Jersey classifier in 2018. Jake has enjoyed getting out seeing other Jersey breeder's cows and getting to see how different sires are transmitting through their progeny and of course loves seeing great cows. In 2015 Jake began working alongside his mother Anthea Day and husband Trevor Saunders with their Araluen Park Jersey Stud combining his Bluegum Park herd. During this time Trevor and Anthea purchased a neighbouring farm expanding their herd from from 350 to 700 cows. Jake has been an integral part of this expansion. In 2018 they expanded again with the addition of a 300 cow dairy farm in very close proximity to the home farm, which Jake has played a major role in the management of. On the 1st of July, Jake will begin a share farm agreement on this farm milking 325 cows, slightly more than half of these being Jersey. We wish Jake all the best in his next step and look forward to seeing his progress.

Breeding tough for Tasmania R yan Langley (right) knows he needs to breed ‘em tough in Tasmania. The young share farmer and Jersey enthusiast is building up his herd, with emphasis on stronger and slightly larger cows to cope with the tough local environment. “I’m looking for strength for Tassie conditions, a bit of size and they’ve got to pay the bills,” Ryan said. “The stud is only a second thing for us, the cows have to pay their way.” At 25, Ryan and his wife Brighid are growing their herd which now stands at 100 Jerseys, and they are raising their own family with first child Hannah born in April. It’s a busy time which keeps Ryan away from showing, but they are making good progress on the share farm at South Riana, which covers 222 hectares and milks 550 cows. They have been building their herd for the past four years and eventually want to own all 550 cows on the farm. At the moment farm owner Garry Carpenter owns the bulk of the herd, made up of large Holsteins. “Garry’s herd is pure-bred Holsteins so mine have to fight with the big girls; not that it’s an issue, but they need a bit of strength and frame,” Ryan said. Ryan started with 20 cows from Geoff Hazelwood in 2018 and boosted his herd by buying 40 cows from the mainland last year. The imports are good cows, but not necessarily ideal for Tasmania. “I’m now using sexed semen trying to build the numbers up and fix any faults that we might have,” he said. “There are a lot of relatively frail cows; a lot we brought from the mainland are a bit frail for Tasmanian conditions. The mainland doesn’t get the conditions we get; it was minus four degrees here last night and we get wild and wet winters. “It’s different breeding on the mainland; they’re not wrong cows;

they’re just not built for our conditions so I’m trying to make them stronger and bigger to suit the conditions.” The farm has split calving using collars. It’s a pasture-based feed The Australian Jersey Journal – July-August 2020 // 22

system, with grain in the bales based on production. The Jerseys are somewhat disadvantaged on the farm because the Holsteins produce more litres, but Ryan’s cows are on track to meet their 550-600 kg/Ms target, with improvements constantly kicking in. “Our breeding isn’t coming through much as yet so the frailer cows aren’t really handling it as well,” Ryan said. “It will take a while for the breeding to kick-in for our conditions.” Ryan say the share agreement is working well, with payment made per kilo, and Garry rearing the young Jersey stock. “When you’ve only got 100 milkers, it’s not practical to start paying agistment for young stock,” Ryan said. “It’s the way Gary has let us bring cows in to build up our herd and it’s going well.” Ryan is starting own stud called, Brylan, but his ultimate aim if farm ownership. “What we’re doing is a stepping stone towards ownership,” he said. “We aim to fill the farm and own about 550, then use the cows as capital and sell half of them to buy a farm.” Owning Jerseys was never up for debate, nor was a career in farming, even though his parents were “townies”. “My grandparents had a farm but he sold when I was two so I never grew up with them. I just always liked Jerseys. They’re easy to handle but you’ve got to be thinking ahead of them because they’re a bit inquisitive. A Friesian will stand there looking at an open gate but a Jersey will run straight through it.” Although he didn’t grow up on a farm, his career choice was never in doubt. “Ever since I could walk and talk, all I wanted to do was milk cows,” he said. The conditions might be tough, but Ryan is pleased to be living the dream. JJ

NORTHERN DISTRICT Jersey Breeders Club Presdient: Daniel Bacon 0407 753 324

“Bercar Jerseys” since 1967 Bernie and Carol McManus, Bamawm VIC

Farm: 32 ha. • My parents Tom and Molly share farmed here before purchasing the property in the mid fifties. • Carol and I started share farming with them in 1977, bought the herd soon after and we have owned the farm since 1998. Herd History: • Initially the herd was a predominantly grade Jersey herd. Dad then purchased 36 deregistered Jersey cows from J.J. Anderson’s “Amesbury jersey Stud and these formed the nucleus of todays herd. • We started using AB in 1967 and have used AI totally since 1969. • We started Herd Testing in 1970 and continued testing monthly since then. • We entered Genetic Recovery and registrations in 1973. • We milk up to 130 cows (Spring calving) rear 35 heifer calves plus 12 bulls. • Our bull calves are genomically tested. Highlights: • I worked part time off farm with Rochester Artificial Breeders from 1969, CHIS and ABS • for 26 years while Dad was here. I gained a lot of breeding knowledge and met many great people. I was always home for milking, AI and calf rearing.

• • • •

Our herd has been in the top 2% for 25 years or more. Currently we are ranked BPI 2nd , HWI 2nd and TWI 2nd . We have had 28 bulls enter AB test programs with 6 being proven and marketed. We have regularly used selected PT semen and high genomicallly tested bulls along with the best proven bulls available.

Best Bulls Used: ROY, YAP, SPOT, YDB, LESTER, BRIGADIER, LEMVIG,VANAHLEM, VALENTINO Best Cow Families: B’s, P’s, R’s and M’s = 80% of herd. Best Cow Family: Betty x YAP 1967 (now 13 generations on) Best Cow Bred: Bercar Peach Ex 93, 10 year average PI 125 We haven’t bought in cows, just using AB, HT and culling results in a youngish herd of sound cows. Future Plans: • As we grow older the time has come to relinquish dairying. We plan to sell the cows in mid October, preferably as a herd privately. Most of the cows will be in milk by then. (140 to calve, selling 130). • We will have two groups of 2 year olds for sale the following two seasons in July. • Dairying has been good along with raising 4 children. We will be sad to leave the industry. • This sale gives someone the opportunity to get into a herd of cows totally AB bred since 1967. We will call for expressions of interest prior to October 2020.

2021 World Conference

Following discussion with the World Bureau, the 2021 World Conference has been deferred to 2022. Restrictions relating to COVID-19 make it challenging for JA to plan and deliver the type and quality of event we want to deliver to the global jersey family.

2020 GSC / GNC

Clubs should be commencing their planning for their club on farm challenges. Key Dates for this year are Great Southern Challenge • GSC Club Results to JA – 6th November • GSC Judging starts – 15th November • GSC Presentation Lunch - 6th December Great Northern Challenge • GNC Club results to JA – 10th November • GNC judging starts – 22nd November • GNC Results announced – 6th December

Dairy House

Planning is under way to return to the office following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. The retightening of these restriction in late June has delayed plans a little and we are aiming for a return to the office in August all being well.

National Breeding Objective

JA has been actively involved in DataGene 2020 National Breeding Objective driving the needs of the Jersey Breeds. We thank all members who took the opportunity to be involved in this process. With a growing amount of evidence that a standardised BPI is reacting differently across different breeds it is very important for Jersey Breeders to be engaged in this process to ensure Jersey specific changes to BPI are implemented.
