FROM THE FRONT DESK

It was terrific to see members at the 2023 Jersey Australia AGM and Conference and my thanks again to the Beautizone Jersey Breeders Club for hosting this annual event for the Association.

For members who were not in attendance at the AGM I advise the following key outcomes of the AGM.

• Financial Reports for the 2022/23 Year were accepted.

• Dillon Clyne was re-appointed as our auditor.

• Wayne Kuhne, Jamie Drury, and Con Glennen were appointed to the Board for a 2 Year Term.

Membership Fees were approved to increase to

• Full Membership $375 + GST

• Family Membership $410.00 + GST

• Associate Membership $180.00 GST

• Junior Membership $80.00 + GST

• Proposed constitutional changes a, b, c & d relating to removal of facsimile transmission as a form of communication was removed from the constitution and amendments relating to the use of video conferencing were accepted as proposed.

Proposed constitutional change to add provision for a specialist director not passed however following feedback from the meeting, this will be revised and represented next year.

Following the AGM, a Board meeting was held to appoint executive members.

• Lisa Broad was returned as President.

• Geoff Akers was appointed as Vice President

• Jamie Drury was returned as Treasurer

• Wayne Kuhne has also been re-appointed as Chair of the Genetics Committee and Jane Sykes Chair of the Promotions Committee.

The AGM fostered some great discussion on the management and direction of the Association and the member feedback and concern will certainly be used by the Board and Management during the oncoming year.

Best Regards

Glen Barrett General Manager

NORTHERN DISTRICT JERSEY BREEDERS CLUB

President:

Vale – Robert ‘Bert’ Bacon

Our club, our Jersey breed, the dairy industry and local community have lost a humble, devoted family man and master breeder in the passing of Robert ‘Bert’ Bacon.

Together with Sandra and in more recent years Daniel, they bred and developed a herd, recognised as one of the best and admired both nationally and internationally.

Dominating the show scene in recent years but never losing sight of the number one priority, that being productive dairy cows.

For a life cut short, what an amazing legacy Bert leaves.

Happy 70th Geoff from all of us.

In Memorium

VALE ROBERT BACON

Our deepest sympathies to the Bacon Family on the Passing of Robert Bacon. Robert with Sandra farmed the BROOKBORA JERSEY STUD at Tennyson in Northern Victoria.

Robert’s drive and passion for the Jersey cow and breeding excellence has seen BROOKBORA become a household name both in Australia and across the globe achieving great success in the showring at local, state, and national shows, regularly being the #1 BPI herd and prominent breeder of bulls for AI programs.

Our condolences to Sandra, Michelle and Daniel and all the Bacon family.

VALE Alex and Pat MacKenzie

Jersey Australia is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of both Alex and Pat MacKenzie. Alex and Pat farmed the COORIEVALE JERSEY STUD at Cooriemungle in Western Victoria. Alex passed away on June 21st and Pat on June 26th.

Alex served AJBS Vic Branch as a board member for 16 years, was a classifier for many years and a judge and had a great passion for the Jersey cow with the COORIEVALE stud commencing in 1964 and was a strong industry advocate for dairy farmers.

Our condolences to Chris, Pam and all the MacKenzie family.

2023 JERSEY AUSTRALIA AGM AND CONFERENCE

THE WARMER NORTHERN NSW WEATHER WAS A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR MEMBERS AND GUESTS WHEN WE ARRIVED IN COFFS HARBOUR AND DORRIGO FOR THE 2023 JERSEY AUSTRALIA AGM AND CONFERENCE AND WERE WARMLY WELCOMED BY THE BEAUTIZONE JERSEY BREEDERS CLUB.

MEMBERS gathered throughout day I in Coffs Harbour and enjoyed a great dinner and catchup friends from across the country and over the ditch from New Zealand at the Element Bar in Coffs Harbour.

On Tuesday morning, an early start had us on the bus heading towards Dorrigo.

We were joined along the road by our local club host Wayne Burley and made our way to our first stop at OAKLEIGH DOWNS JERSEYS / Simon and Tekoa Atkins.

Members enjoyed a walk around the herd and the farm overview provided by Simon.

Next stop was the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre and Skywalk. The skywalk provided us a great view across the rainforest and members also took time to enjoy the visitor centre and gift shop before heading to the home of Wayne and Robin Burley for morning tea.

The Burleys MOONPAH & BRAELYN Studs were dispersed in December with only young heifers remaining on farm.

Members took a walk through the heifers with many taking interest in the heifers to be sold in the Dairy’s Fines Sale the following day.

Next stop was to WINVARL JERSEYS / Andrew, Natalie and Warwick Marks where we got to see a great selection of the herd and a farm profile by Andrew. We took a sensational group photo with the rolling Dorrigo hills as our backdrop before enjoying a great lunch provided by Elders. Our thanks to the Elders team.

Following lunch were back on the bus to Scott and Rennae Connell’s VALLEYROSE JERSEYS, where we firstly took in a theatrical display of bobcat handling skills before a herd walk and farm profile from Scott.

Last stop on the bus trip was Dangar Falls before we headed back down the mountain to Coffs Harbour. Members enjoyed a great buffet dinner at Annuka Beach Resort on Tuesday with some taking the challenge of breaking the national prawn eating records!!

Guest speaker for the evening was Mudassar Hassan from HRM Dairies in Pakistan who spoke on the growing opportunities for Australian genetics in Pakistan.

Wednesday started with members visiting a blueberry farm and Mutton Bird Island walk, then lunch at the Jetty Beach Café before Brian Leslie and the DLS team took centre stage for the 2023 Dairy’s Finest Sale.

Our thanks to Mitchell Flemming and Daniel Bacon for putting together a sensational catalogue of some of the best pedigrees from across the country.

Strong bidding from all parts of Australia achieved a sale average of $5,880.00 and a top price of $13,000. Congrats to all vendors and purchasers.

The Australian Jersey Journal – July-August 2023 // 8 AGM WRAP

A special highlight of the afternoon was the “In Bert’s Memory” charity auction in honour of Robert Bacon raising money to be donated to the Peter MacCallum Research Foundation.

With over 30 donated lots plus a % donation of various lots in the Dairy’s Finest Sale, nearly $45,000.00 was raised. Special thanks to Luke Wallace and Mitch Flemming for putting this together, Hayley Boyd for preparing the catalogue and Dairy Livestock Services and Elite Livestock Auctions for donating their services to conduct the Auction.

Wednesday night we had the 2023 Jersey Australia awards dinner. President Lisa Broad welcomed members and guests to the evening

and we enjoyed guest speakers Julie Pirie, President of Jersey New Zealand talking on the establishment of Jersey Land Farms and Graeme Hollis, director of Dairy NSW on programs on project at a national and state level supporting Australian dairy farmers.

Brian Wilson was recognised for his service to Jersey Australia with a Distinguished Services Award, Winvarl Jerseys and Shirlinn Jerseys were respectively awarded a 75- and 50-year Stud awards and members production awards were also presented.

Jersey Australia was also pleased to present the first of our Jersey Elite Awards with the first Jersey Elite Brood Cow awards.

MEMBER AWARDS

Our congratulations to the following members who received awards at the recent 2023 Awards Dinner

Distinguished Service Awards

Congratulations to Brian Wilson (pictured right) who was recognised with a Jersey Australia Distinguished Services Award. Brian who this year did not seek re-election to the Board after 10 years of service to the Association has been a strong influential voice on the Board during his tenure and has served as Vice President and on the Genetics, Promotions and Audit and Risk Sub Committees. Brian is a passionate Jersey breeder and his family stud SHIRLINN needs no introduction and has been a leading exhibitor at major shows across Australia for many years.

Congratulations Brian and our thanks also to Vicki and the Wilson family for supporting Brian to serve the Association for many years.

Our congratulations to all who received an award.

The week was wrapped up with the 2023 Annual General Meeting on Thursday morning. Our thanks to those who attended both in person and online.

We welcomed Con Glennen to the Board for a 2-year term and also thanked Brian Wilson who departed the board after the completion of his term and 12 years on board.

Our many thanks to the Beautizone Jersey Breeders Club for being great hosts and organising a terrific week of farm visits and local attractions and the many sponsors who without your support we could not have achieved what we did.

MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT

THE FIRST GROUP OF NINE JERSEY ELITE MASTER BREEDERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT A SPECIAL FUNCTION IN MELBOURNE ON AUGUST 19.

THE presentation at the Cargo Hall at South Wharf will be the culmination of Jersey Australia’s recognition program that highlights the best cows, bulls and breeders.

The Master Breeder award recognises a member’s breeding excellence and also their longevity and commitment to the breed, including the use of Jersey Australia services such as registration.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said the Master Breeder award would be a major annual event.

The Master Breeder award is data driven and requires members to have been at least a 20-year member, register 25 animals a year on average across the 20 years and have achieved at least three of the following:

• Bred at least three Jersey Elite Brood Cows,

• Bred at least five Jersey Elite Production Cows,

• Bred at least two Jersey Elite Type Cows or

• Bred at least one Jersey Elite Bull.

The new award is part of Jersey Australia’s Jersey Elite awards that also recognise elite cows and bulls.

Mr Barrett said the new Master Breeders were at “the top of the tree” and was something all breeders should aspire to.

“It is an award that they can use to promote themselves and their stud as being at the elite level of Jersey breeding in Australia,” he said.

The first group of Jersey Elite breed cows were presented at the 2023 awards night in May and a list of Jersey Elite type and production cows has been sent to members. At the awards night on August 19, there will be the first presentation of Jersey Elite bulls, the next batch of Jersey Elite Brood cows and the inaugural Master Breeders.

The Master Breeders inducted in the first presentation will be presented with certificates and trophies and their member profiles will be updated.

“They will be forever known as Master Breeders, which is something that will be of great benefit for their advertising and promotions,” Mr Barrett said.

“The August 19 announcements won’t be a one-off.

“The Master Breeder awards moving forward will be presented at the annual awards night during the AGM and Conference, subject to a breeder qualifying for the achievement.” Mr Barrett said.

For the Jersey Elite award, Jersey Australia has used data from 1990 onward.

Mr Barrett encouraged members to book online to attend the event to celebrate the first group of Master Breeders. Members can book at https://www.trybooking.com/CJKKW

CON’S COMMERCIAL FOCUS

NOORAT DAIRY FARMER CON GLENNEN HOPES TO BRING A STRONG COMMERCIAL FOCUS TO THE JERSEY AUSTRALIA BOARD, AND HIS TRACK RECORD SHOWS HE HAS PLENTY OF EXPERTISE TO SHARE.

CON and Michelle’s White Star Jerseys stud sits atop of the BPI, ASI and Type ratings in the latest Australian Breeding Values, positions it has regularly held for many years.

They have always bred with a commercial focus and Con hopes he can inspire others to turn to the benefits of Jerseys.

“We’re running okay at the moment but there were years of establishment before me,” Con said. “We’ve just remained dedicated to having a top herd and had a bit of luck along the way,” he added.

“We’ve always been commercial operators and I’d like to share that focus.”

The award-winning herd achieves good production and is constantly improving, currently averaging about 630kgMs per cow.

The herd is totally Jersey. “We’re happy with the results we’re getting, especially the feed conversion,” Con said.

Con has travelled the world looking for the right genetics for his stud and says what has evolved in Australia is now the best in the world.

“I can see that the Australian Jersey cow at the moment is absolutely world class,” he said.

“We’ve lost the front of the American cow; we’ve lost other issues that were happening. We’ve been game enough to take progeny from all over

the world and make something special. We’ve put together the best of the world and now we have the best in the world.”

While not wanting to make big statements about what he wants to achieve during his time on the board, Con is confident Australia’s Jerseys have a lot to offer other countries.

“It’s time the world saw more of us; they need to have a look at what we’ve got and they are,” he said. “We’re in a very good spot but we can always get better.”

Con and Michelle had planned to increase their herd up to around 500 but settled on 400 due to labour issues.

“At the moment, the broader dairy industry is interested in the new price for the year but labour is going to be the biggest issue that we have to address.

“I went to the World Dairy Fair in Madison Wisconsin last year. Dairy people from all over the world go there and labour constantly came up as an issue.”

Con has also been a director of National Herd Development Corporation for about eight years but this is his first time on the Jersey Australia board.

“It’s been something I wanted to do before I retired from farming,” he said. “I’m 55 and won’t keep going at this pace for too long.

“There will come a day when I won’t be a dairy farmer, so it’s good to make a contribution to the Jersey Australia board while I can.”

A third-generation farmer, Con’s grandparents Con and Margaret bought 38 acres at the bottom end of the existing farm more than 100 years ago.

Con grew up on a dairy farm at The Sisters and moved onto his current farm with his uncles, Con and Jack, in 1992. Con and Michelle have been joined in the business by their sons James and William.

The Glennens have always focussed on keeping meticulous records and adopting new technology as it evolves, something Con and Michelle continue today.

Jersey Museum visit

The club has been busy with well attended on farm meetings over the early part of 2023. In March we made a long awaited and overdue visit to see the Jersey Museum and historical archive display put together by Winsome Anderson.

Winsome has created a truly wonderful collection of memorabilia and historical archive of the Jersey breed. The time and dedication that she has made to bring this to life is phenomenal.

We’d like to thank Winsome for hosting us for the day and on behalf of the broader Jersey community thank her for preserving the history of the Jersey breed for generations to come!

Visitors are always welcome to contact Winsome to book an appointment and view her collection.

At the completion of the day we then had the opportunity to view some freshly calved 2 year olds at Kings View Jerseys.

A lovely group of heifers were on display with some very nice Matt, Chrome and Valin daughters and much discussion over the consistency of the group.

Many thanks the Ian and Katherine for taking the time to draft off the group for inspection.

Farm visit

Following on from this in April the Central and South Gippsland clubs held a combined day at Wallacedale Jerseys.

This was a chance for all members to view the recently installed AMS Lely robot milking system. The farm is currently milking 160 cows through 2 units.

The transition has been a very smooth one and the cows have adapted incredibly well.

The Wallaces plan on trying to increase that number to 170 - 180 cows by moving to 3 shorter calving periods instead of the current split 2 calving system.

It was very well attended with staff from Lely Centre Gippsland on hand to answer questions and Gippsland Jersey supplying coffee and milk shakes using delicious Gippsland Jersey milk!

We thank them both for sponsoring the food and drinks for the day.

Ronald Stanley Baker

Ron, RS, Rugged, Dad, Pop or Poppy, created a great Jersey life for himself, Glenyss and 4 children. Philippa, Dalene (Deli), Andrea & Grant. Born and raised in Footscray, interestingly always wanted to be farmer from a young age, albeit had never been on one. His first farm job was down at Bittern, part time milking at Doc Heywood’s revered Wyndrest Jersey Stud, and working for his sister and brother in-law Marj and Ken McDonald. All three shifted up to Merrigum, when he also played footy. Winning a senior premiership at 16 in 1956. At 21 he then leased a farm at Tongala, next door to Guernsey breeder Wally Briggs. They remained great friends for many years, maintaining a healthy rivalry between Guernseys and Ron’s Jerseys.

Ron had a paraplegic friend, Jim Dalrymple, who financed him into the soldier settler block at Katunga, with no deposit, on 1st September 1963.

Ron & Glenyss married 18th April 1964 & began their Glenarron farming lives together.

Ron & Glenyss negotiated the following 10 years with Jim, including the purchase of Clarkes 50 acre orchard block over the road, in 1974. We cleared the trees, lasered, sowed, fenced & set up for irrigation & cow troughs. Ron was a wonderful farmer, who was very particular and detailed in all he did. Everything went back into the farm for capital improvements, adding value and trying to make things more efficient.

“I first met Ron when I joined the GMJBC in 1980 and was instantly drawn to him as he was what I identified at the time as a progressive farmer even though he had registered cows he was more focused on the production side and modern farming practices than a lot of other breeders at the time were more type/ show orientated.

As time went on, we became even closer when I joined Vic branch committee, Ron was already a long term committee man and his knowledge was important moving forward. You know when you talk to someone a lot when you can remember their phone number. We got to spend a lot of time travelling in the car together to monthly meetings, discussing everything from politics to Jersey cows and everything in between.

On one of those trips we discussed how we could get all the club OFC winners to be judged against each other. The result was the formation of the Great Southern Challenge which has exceeded both our expectations.

From 1965 to 1970 the four children were born. There were always plenty of jobs & responsibilities taught & shared with years of hard work evident in everyone. The Glenarron prefix was registered in 1971.

The family entered a couple of farming competitions back in the 70’s, sponsors including RASV, Commonwealth bank & Department of Ag. Results included some commendations, trophies, and a 2nd in section, which Ron was chuffed about. Other than his pasture management, channel cleaning, fence post painting (shared by the kids), laneway, gate & fence maintenance, there were many fires to clean-up everything that looked messy, before judging. Finally, the reward of first prize came in 1984. Ron always had a packet of matches in his pocket!

Ron always regarded himself as being a commercial dairy farmer, with registered cows. He loved going to Jersey sales, which in those days could be two or three a week. Warwick was his favourite as they had a beautifully treed farm and golden coloured cows. Early registered purchases were via lines of well grown heifers from local Jersey herds of Ray Peel’s Leavale stud, and Avonvale of Alan Lowndes. Then a series of syndicate sales at Karraglen. He continued to bring new animals into the herd, and often bought Lot 1 as they were usually good value. He didn’t necessarily buy on pedigree, but the ones with wedge shape and good dairy bone. Notorious for marking his catalogue with multiple ticks, crosses and circles; resembling snakes and ladders.

Ron joined the Goulburn Murray Jersey Breeders Club in the late 70's and held many positions of office through the 80's and 90's. He was awarded a life member of the club in 2006.

Ron was very active on many committees & community groups, including as President of Katunga district UDV 1985 - 1986 at a very contentious time before milk price deregulation. Ron’s representation was always about the bigger picture of the benefits for the whole dairy industry.

He was a delegate to conferences of the Cattle Club Association for Australian Jersey Herd Society (Vic Branch) and went onto the state committee in the mid 80’s when the name changed to Australian Jersey Breeders Society and became Incorporated. He was on Promotions sub-committee 1993, Vice President of Vic Branch 1994-98, and Treasurer in 2002. He was also President of Numurkah Rotary Club 1995-96. Ron received a Distinguished Service Award of AJBS in 2003. He did not seek re-election to Jersey Australia in 2005.

Ron was a founding member of the Numurkah Development Group, seeking to encourage growth of tourism and sustainability to the town, to subsequently support small business and community groups. He was awarded Life membership of the Numurkah and District Tourism Association. In order to share his passion and knowledge of farming and Jersey cows, Ron & Glenyss renovated the old cool store shed on the property and registered a farm stay business for city folk to come and experience how a dairy farm worked.

Ron was a real family man and that was evident at his memorial service where children and grand- children all spoke highly of him and the influence he had on their lives. He loved his cows, developed three farms into a compact working unit through hard work and determination which must have come from growing up in Footscray. And that brings us to his other love, his mighty doggies. He was over the moon when they won 2016 premiership and had bragging rights over me until 2021. I had the pleasure of watching the Jersey judging at IDW this year sitting next to him ringside, watching two of his grandsons Mitchell and Brenton present their cows to the highest standard, something they inherited from him.

Great to have known you Ron and will miss our chats.” Peter Farrell. As Ron’s health and fitness deteriorated the farm was sold in 2018, The Glenarron Finale saw his beloved Jerseys sold to all areas of Victoria, and NSW to a top price of $4,700. As a family we are most pleased to hear how the new owners like their Glenarron purchases, and how they are breeding on.

Ron and Glenyss moved into Numurkah in August 2018, and Ron tried to stay active, and was still caring about all things farming and Jersey. He and Glenyss also joined Probus.

Ron also fought hard to see water remain on farms and be reasonably priced. He was a passionate letter writer and always stood up for what he believed in. Ron was awarded a Distinguished Service Award of Jersey Australia in 2018, and a 50 Year Jersey Stud Award in 2021. He was incredibly proud to be a grandparent. Mitchell and Brenton Flemming have Jersey blood in their veins. Chelsea and Mason Boschetti are amazing self-motivated individuals in their fields. Mitchell married Lyndsey on 25th of March last year; exactly the date Ron passed. Ron developed an amateur appreciation for social media, to keep up with the growth and farm escapades of Mitchell and Lyndsey’s little daughter Spencer.

Ron was a great provider, mentor and a man of such integrity, grit and determination.

AUSTRALIA’S JET SETTING JERSEY GENETICS GAIN WORLDWIDE ATTENTION

GLOBAL

DEMAND FOR

AUSTRALIAN

JERSEY GENETICS IS GROWING AS DAIRY FARMERS SEEK TO BREED MORE STRENGTH AND CAPACITY INTO THEIR HERDS.

And this world-wide interest comes as South African breeders can’t get enough of one Gippslandbred sire in particular. Genomic superstar Gelbeado Park Woodside (CSCWOODSIDE) is dominating semen export sales with South African breeders leading the charge. ABS Australia Sales Representative

Alan Blum said the Jersey breed had been crying out for a bull like CSCWOODSIDE that can add the vital physical traits which are linked to productivity.

“It is his strength - chest width, muzzle width and body depth - that underpins demand,” he said. “In Australia that adds production and profitability and it’s sought after around the world to add strength into the Jersey breed.”

CSCWOODSIDE is 346 on the Balanced Performance Index (BPI), scores 110 for Overall Type, is +386 for Milk and has 22kg of Protein and 34kg of Fat. His semen is currently exported to South Africa and New Zealand, and he has two daughters within the top ten Jersey young females in Australia.

Paul and Lisa Mumford, Gelbeado Park, Yarram, Victoria, bred CSCWOODSIDE.

“Humbled” with the interest in their bull, Paul said Australian breeders develop “flexible” genetics - that produce milk in a variety of farming systems and under all sorts of conditions.

“We’ve got a special farming system here in Australia and for generations we’ve been breeding cows to suit it,” he said. “We’ve got very flexible genetics; we give them inputs to create the milk and also ask them to eat grass to create milk as well.”

Farmer-owned, Jersey-focused herd improvement organisation Central Sires Co-operative Chairman Peter Ness said globally Jersey breeders are turning to Australia because of the purity of its genetics. He said the Jersey Australia stand at World Dairy Expo in the United States late last year attracted a lot of attention.

“The people we saw were asking about the Australian bulls that we have available because they were using American genetics but are not interested in the JX- prefix cattle,” he said.

“Countries that had previously sourced genetics from America are starting to look elsewhere and if you look at the data, Australia and Jersey Island have the purest Jersey genetics in the world.”

But this interest in Australian Jerseys hasn’t just been a result of the discovery of unknown dairy genetics in the pedigrees of some Jersey cattle - those given the prefix JX. Peter said hosting the World Jersey Cattle Bureau Annual Meeting in Australia about ten years ago provided the ideal backdrop to showcase Jerseys on-farm as well as the scientific work focusing on genomics. Since this meeting, interest in Australian Jerseys has increased.

ABS Australia recorded a huge surge in demand for long-time breed leader, and one of nation’s most legendary Jersey sires Cairnbrae

Jaces ELTON. About 28,000 units of his semen were sold overseas, out of a total of more than 150,000. When he retired in June 2018, he had 5,531 registered milking daughters in Australia as well as daughters in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the United States.

Now the industry is witnessing another spike in demand for CSCWOODSIDE.

Peter said the interest from South Africa in particular, is because the nation also predominantly grazes milking cows and requires them to walk to the dairy.

“They like bulls that are positive for milk flow and positive for fat and protein,” he said. “CSCWOODSIDE ticks all those boxes but trying to find those bulls can be a lot harder than you’d think, that’s why Australian genetics are so in demand.”

Demand for Australian semen has also recently taken off in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, especially among breeders that show cattle.

A sire that’s had particularly strong interest from the United States and Canada is Brookbora Bushfield P (CSCBUSHFIELD), the type, production, and heterozygous polled bull. Bred by the Bacon family, Brookbora Jerseys in Northern Victoria, CSCBUSHFIELD has a balanced proof that stands up for even the most type-conscious dairy farmer.

ABS Australian Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds said it’s a credit to the Australian industry that it’s delivering Jersey genetics the world wants.

The Australian Jersey Journal – July-August 2023 // 26 INDUSTRY

“It’s been a long time since any ABS Australia Jersey genetics have gone to the US, normally it’s coming the other way,” he said. “And we just keep getting more and more enquiries. It’s great news for Australian Jersey breeders and the entire local dairy industry.”

QUALITY SIRE COMES FROM PROVEN COW FAMILY

When Paul Mumford breeds dairy cows, he wants “everything”. And it turns out this is exactly what South African and New Zealand Jersey breeders want too.

Paul and his wife Lisa, Gelbeado Park, Yarram, Victoria, bred Gelbeado Park Woodside (CSCWOODSIDE), the ABS Australia Jersey sire with the highest number of exported semen straws this past year. He was also the highest selling Jersey sire domestically this financial year.

“It is nice to know that people around the world will be using this bull and hopefully he delivers great animals that have longevity and improve the breed,” Paul said.

“Australian Jerseys - and our black and white counterparts - haven’t always been recognised for the great animals we have here, with farmers looking overseas to add to our genetic pool.” Paul said Australian

genetics were “flexible” as cows were able to milk with grass, other inputs, or a combination of both.

It’s this strong focus on cows fitting into an Australian - or specifically the Mumford’s Gippsland farming system - that drives Paul’s breeding objective. This system at Yarram is a predominantly spring calving, dryland, pasture-based dairy farm where cows are fed 1.4-1.6 tonnes of grain each - depending on the season.

With this in mind, it is no surprise that Paul believes he’s “fussy” when he says he needs everything in a cow.

“I want capacity, strength, ability to milk, likeability - one that doesn’t kick - and longevity, one that makes money,” he said.

“I’m pretty stringent on how I breed cows and pretty ruthless when it comes to improving my farming system. The CSCWOODSIDE cow family has survived and regenerated for me and is achieving that longterm goal of where I am taking my farm system and genetics.”

A descendant of the Cowslip family, Paul specifically chased these genetics because they had a “formidable bloodline history” and were “genetically better”.

“I looked at their numbers, and this was before genomics,” he said.

“Their ABV (Australian Breeding Value) numbers were performing better than their expected parent average. The proof has been in the pudding, they’ve probably done me pretty well, breeding two bulls.”

A Nuffield Scholarship in 2009, studying genomics and its application in Australia, enabled Paul to expand his theory of “crunching the numbers” and investigating cow families that deliver progeny that are better than their expected parent average. Genomics was introduced to the Australian dairy industry in about 2010 and this quantified Paul’s belief in concentrating on the numbers and improving his genetics with every generation.

He continues to employ this approach to breeding and combines it with a visual appraisal of each animal.

For him, the Cowslip family offered the best of both worlds - and this is reflected in CSCWOODSIDE.

“It’s a very rare trait to have strength, capacity and milk together in one animal- normally we call that beef,” Paul joked.

“But it’s definitely something the Jerseys were lacking and that’s what made the Cowslips even more appealing. They had the ability to milk and visually showed strength and capacity, all in the one animal.”

CSCWOODSIDE is Gelbeado Park’s third sire that’s entered the artificial insemination market.

Paul’s “humbled” by CSCWOODSIDE’S success - both in Australia and across the globe – but he’d much prefer to breed cows, any day of the week. After all, they offer much more value to his milk production business.

Nevertheless, he’s making the most of CSCWOODSIDE’S balanced proof as he strives for continual improvement.

“What I like about CSCWOODSIDE is he’s the perfect bull for my herd. He’s going to deliver all the traits that I need to improve the core nucleus of my breeding herd,” he said.

“He will be my primary bull because the traits he displays are exactly what I need for my herd - strength, capacity and the ability to milk.”

ABVCORNER

Australian Breeding Values

Type Traits can be broken into traits group and for this ABV Corner we will focus on traits affecting Rumps. Traits in this group include PIN SET, PIN WIDTH, LOIN STRENGTH AND RUMP LENGTH

Rump Length

✓ This ABV refers to the length of an animal’s rump and for the trait we are seeking a longer rump rather than shorter and on classification have the ideal set as 9 being maximum. With the ABV, select bulls with an ABV of greater than one hundred to breed for longer rumps.

Loin Strength

✓ To breed for stronger loins, you should select for bulls with and ABV of greater than 100. This a trait selecting for extremes may not be the best outcome. Jersey Australia’s ideal for the trait is 7 for a 1st lactation heifer and 6 for cows.

✓ If you have cows which score at ideal or stronger (8-9) on the trait score you should need to select bulls at extremes and bulls below 100 could be used to seek to ease back loin strength in the next generation.

Pin Width

✓ The Pin Width ABV refers to the width of the pins of the cow. When using the ABV select bulls with an ABV of greater than 100 to increase pin width. On classification, Jersey Australia sets an ideal of 9 for the trait.

Pin Set

✓ The Pin Set ABV refers to an animal’s rump angle and to improve rump angle select bulls with an ABV of 100+. The ABV is based on the Pin Set trait where ideal is set at 6.

PRODUCTION, TYPE, WELLNESS AND STRONG MATERNAL LINES

7JE2022 OVERALLS is a 7JE01787

CALIBAN son with a remarkable maternal line tracing back to an EX-90 CHROME, followed by six generations of Very Good scored cows, each with a unique sire stack. His dam is an exceptional dairy cow with a flat bone structure, sufficient strength, and an impressive udder. The rear udder is particularly noteworthy, with exceptional height and width, as well as a strong udder cleft. In addition to a great maternal line, OVERALLS delivers a JX-free pedigree with an outstanding JUI (+15.1) and is A2A2 and BB. His daughters are expected to have an eye-catching profile, in part due to his impressive linear block. He offers outstanding udder traits and will add teat length. OVERALLS combines

Production, Type, and fertility into one complete package!

614JE2083 SEISMIC-PP is a breedleading sire for the polled market, with an exceptional maternal line to match.

His Very Good dam, currently in her second lactation, is a cow of moderate size but impressive strength and dairyness. Her udder is well-attached with an outstanding rear udder that has remarkable height and width.

According to Marc Bolen, Jersey Sire Analyst Select Sires, “Seismic-PP’s 3rd dam is an EX-91 TEXAS, which to us, is a great thing. With the udders that TEXAS put on through his daughters, makes it easy to believe SEISMIC-PP is destined to do the same.”

This bull has it all – balanced production, excellent type (+1.5 PTAT) and JUI (+21.9), and Mastitis ResistantPRO. SEISMIC-PP offers the rare combination of extreme wellness traits (+$1026 DWP$) and Homozygous polled into one package.

STARK PP

Pixstar x Tahbilk Ex92 x Equinox Ex91

THE WORLDS LEADING HOMOZYGOUS POLLED JERSEY BULL.

Wallacedale Stark offers a combination of increased production and conformation and is bred down from the Denison Park Madge family. The ever-increasing demand from Jersey breeders looking to secure “Polled Genetics” has seen STARK attracting global attention. Simply a “World Class” genomic young sire.

Sister of STARK PP – Wallacedale Matt Madge – VG88 2yrs #1 BPI & SI cow in the Wallacedale Herd

Strong results support the strength of Australian breeding programs. The commitment made by Australian Jersey breeders to deliver world class genetics is evident in the April 2023 ABV release.
