AUSTRALIAN FARMERS LOVE THEIR STURGIS CALVES!
“Sturgis are easily one of the best group of calves we have put through the calf shed. They are even, exceptionally aggressively, strong, smart-looking calves. This comes on top of an exceptional conception rate from sexed semen.
Our oldest group of Sturgis daughters are now joined for February 2024 calving and are impressing us with their dairy strength and capacious frames and are standouts in the paddock.
We are excited as Sturgis looks like he will be a sire of sons and we can’t wait to use some of these youngsters with exceptional numbers.“

FROM THE FRONT DESK
On August 19th the Association celebrated a momentous occasion in awarding its first Master Breeder Awards with a wonderful night with past and present members at Cargo Hall in Melbourne for the Breed Association The Jersey Elite Awards have given us a great opportunity to connect with a number of retired Breeders who have been quite honoured to have their cows recognised and have reflected fondly of their time as members of Jersey Australia and breeding Jersey cows. it has been quite warming to receive letters and phone calls and listen to their many stories and fond memories.
My congratulations again to our inaugural Master Breeders. You are all very worthy recipient of a Master Breeder award and who all have a strong recognisable achievement for:
• Longevity with the society and a strong commitment to registering and classifying cows.
• Breeding cows that excel in both type and production
• Breeding cows that breed on and have progeny recognised for their type and production.
• Breeding cows that are in demand by other Breeders in Australia and across the globe
• Breeding bulls that have excelled in AI programs
• Cows and herds with genetic excellence with 7 of the Master Breeders in the Top 50 BPI herds in the country.
The release of the awards has raised much interest from members in seeking answers as to why cows are not being recognised. A common pattern in looking at a large number of cows is data accuracy. It is really important to ensure the data and information you provide Jersey Australia matches your records with your herd test centre.
We have been assisting herds to match data due to significant data variation between their herd book and herd test centre records. To make these corrections, it is very time consuming as each cow has to be manually corrected. It is important for members to ensure your data is correct and accurate when presenting to Jersey Australia as we can only work with what we are provided.
Best Regards
Glen Barrett General Manager
Jersey Australia Director Appointment
Jersey Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of David Boyd to the Board for an interim period up to the 2024 AGM to fill a vacant board position.

Spring Classification 2023
Bookings are now open for Spring 2023 Classification requirements. Jersey Australia encourages members to be proactive in making their bookings.
Over the past 2 years members proactiveness in booking classifications is reducing with over half of classification bookings coming after the booking cut off dates.
Bookings can be made by returning the classification booking form via mail, book online at https://jersey.com.au/product/spring2023_classbooking/ or email class@jersey.com.au
Bookings for all regions excluding Queensland where classifications will be undertaken at the end of September will close October 15th, 2023.
All Breeds Youth Program
Australia’s registered breed Associations are joining forces to implement a National All Breeds youth program.
With a program that will include leadership and mentoring, on farm and off farm skills development and the annual young breeders’ school and with a dedicated annual funding commitment from all breed associations, the All-Breeds youth program is working towards being up and running during the back half of this year.
Competition Judges
The Board of Jersey Australia recently considered the necessity to maintain an active approved judge panel.
It is the responsibility of the organisers of the show or competition to appropriately consider who they appoint as a judge.
Jersey Australia provides the following guidance on how to select a judge for your show or competition.
A person who is appointed to judges a show or photographic competition of jersey cows should.
• Have and informed understanding of the structure of a jersey cow and be able to know the correct terms and names of the parts they refer to.
o It is also expected that they have an informed understanding of how 1 part of the cow can affect others of the cow and the importance of
• To have an informed understanding of the All-Breeds Ethics Guidelines and to able to appropriately recognise whether a cow has been incorrectly or inappropriately fitted in accordance with the guidelines.
• Have an informed understanding of the key natural and defining characteristics of the jersey cow.
• Have and informed understanding of the type of cow that best fits Australian farming conditions and to mature into a long lasting, high production profitable dairy cow.
• Be able to clearly communicate their placing decisions to the public accurately describing the variation from cow to cow why they have placed the cows in the order that they have.
Jersey Australia provides no recommendation of judges’ capability or performance and considers it the responsibility of the organisers of the show or competition to determine the appointed judge(s)has the appropriate capability to officiate at their show or competition.
Registration of Bulls
Following a review of registration requirements of Bulls by the Jersey Australia Genetics Committee, the Board has endorsed a recommendation to remove the requirement for a dam to be classified for a bull to be registered.
The removal of this requirement was considered appropriate in that.
• The Association requires that all bulls are genomic tested prior to Registration, and this is considered to be an as good indicator of the bull’s potential.
• The current rule does not contain any minimum classification standards so does not provide a beneficial quality control mechanism.
• Modern breeding technologies provides breeders with the potential to see bulls at an age to be breeding ready before their dams commence their 1st lactation and receive their initial classification.
Position Vacant
Jersey Australia is seeking expression of interest from members interested in joining either the:
• Genetics and Breed Development Sub Committee
• Promotions and Marketing Sub-Committee
The Genetics and Breed Development Sub Committee provide a key function of review on all genetics matters both on behalf of the Board and driven by the committee members and provide recommendations to the Board for consideration.
Sub-Committee members are expected to have a good understanding or all breeding objectives, breeding values and classification.
The Promotions and Marketing Sub-Committee assist the Association in establishing its annual promotions events calendar and competition review.
Members interested in joining either of the subcommittee should contact General Manager Glen
AROUND THE GROUNDS

Expression of interest close on Friday October 7th, 2023.
Great Southern and Great Northern Challenges
As we head towards spring, planning should be underway for your on-farm challenges. Club challenges are expected to be completed and results to the Jersey Australia office by October 31st, 2022.
• Great Southern Challenge Judging is expected to commence on week starting Nov 13th.
• Great Northern Challenge Judging is expected to commence on week starting Nov 27th.
• Great Southern Presentation will be on Wednesday December 13th.
• Great Northern Presentation date will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The Board of Jersey Australia has raised its concern that some club may not be meeting their minimum basic governance requirement of holding an Annual General Meeting and that by not holding an annual general meeting, you are putting at risk, your club’s capacity to be covered by Jersey Australia’s insurance policies for public liability and volunteer workers insurance.
Due to the is concern, the Board of Jerey Australia has implemented the following requirements.
• All Clubs submitting entries into the Great Northern and Great Southern Challenges and any other Jersey Australia competition that is entered on a club basis are required on an annual basis to submit the following by September 30th.
o A copy of your Annual General Meeting minutes for 2023
o A list of club activities or events expected to be held in the coming 12 months.
o A payment of $27.50 for the cost of insurance coverage
Clubs who do not consider they will be able to meet these requirements in full by Sept 30, 2023, must contact Jersey Australia General Manager Glen Barrett on 0418 466 371 or email Glen.Barrett@jersey.com.au to apply for an exemption.
We cannot stress the importance of ensuring your clubs meet their minimum basic governance requirement and maintaining your bank authorities up to date to prevent accounts becoming dormant and accounts being transferred to unclaimed funds.
If you have any questions relating to the Boards directive, please contact any one of the Board members who’s contact details you will find on Jersey Australia’s website at https://jersey.com.au/the-board/

LOXLEIGH JERSEYS // AKERS FAMILY
After more than 70 years, the Loxleigh Jersey Stud is still hitting new highs.
Just this year, Loxleigh recorded its third 94-point cow and it came from a family that stretches back to the very beginning of the stud.
Loxleigh is now run by Geoff and Natalie Akers at Tallygaroopna in northern Victoria, where they have farmed since 1993 and currently milk about 700 Jerseys and 100 crossbreds.
The new 94-point cow, Loxleigh Hatman Marie 6209, hails from a family bought by Geoff’s father and grandfather, Harold and Bob Akers in 1952, just a year or
two after starting the stud.
The name Loxleigh steams from the area the Akers family farmed near Nagambie until 1912.
Loxleigh Astound Iris 4 and Loxleigh Badger Iris 4 were also On-Farm Challenge
Great Southern Champions, two of the four achieved by the stud.
For Geoff, the On-Farm challenge wins, including four Great Southern Champions, have been his career highlights.
The first was Loxleigh Blain Lily 2 in 2000, who was from a cow family purchased from the Gilmour family in the 1970s.
The following winners in 2006, 2014 and 2015 were all from the Iris family purchased at Arthur Rodaughan’s Denison Park dispersal in 1996.
This dispersal developed some of the strongest cow families at Loxleigh and across the jersey breed in Australia. Loxleigh Astound Iris 4 and Loxleigh Futurity Iris reached the pinnacle of
Loxleigh Hatman Marie 6289 follows Astound Iris 4 and Badger Iris 4 as the stud’s 94-point cows, leading a team that has included multiple 93-point cows and countless 90+ Excellent.
“To get a 94-point cow from a family we’ve had for 70 years was a great thrill,” Geoff said.
Great Southern Challenge Champion cow and Loxleigh Badger Iris 4 winning the All-Australian title also.
“They were great thrills and it’s always a challenge to do it again,” Geoff said.
“We send one or two to IDW with moderate success, including a first placing with a two-year-old Loxleigh Hatman Dolly in 2019, but we have a preference for the
On-Farm Challenge.”
Iris is one of the stud’s bigger and most successful families, matched for quality and numbers by the Marie family.
Loxleigh has also entered many bulls into A.I programs, and currently has one of the best performers in Australia in Invincible.
“We’re quite pleased with how he is going,” Geoff said. “We’re milking a number of his daughters and we get good reports from others who are milking them in terms of their production and strength and type.
“We focus on breeding good cows and genomically test a few bulls each year.”
Loxleigh uses mainly Australian genetics and Geoff looks for production with high type, with a strong focus on udders and deep-ribbed cows with plenty of strength in the front end.
The herd has achieved platinum milk production for the past five years.
“That’s pleasing because we try to breed functional production cows with good type so they will last,” Geoff said.
Geoff welcomes the Master Breeder award.
“It’s great recognition of the breed,” he said. “It’s nice to be one of the inaugural members.”
Geoff continues to focus on what makes Jersey cows the best for his system.
“The Jersey is a very functional cow that fits our system. I think they are the most profitable cow to deal with.”

KINGS VILLE JERSEYS // ROB AND KERRIE ANDERSON
Kings Ville Jerseys is all about family.
Rob and Kerrie Anderson, alongside youngest daughter Holly, are involved with the Kings Ville stud, with Holly beginning full-time employment in 2023 and establishing her own prefix, Empire Jerseys.
Rob and Kerrie’s other daughters, Em and Meg, both own individual cows under the Kings Ville prefix and are in a three-sister partnership with their beloved Fernleaf family.
Kings Ville was established in 1987 by Rob as a 16-yearold with the support of parents, Bert and Winsome who established Kings View in 1961. The Kings Ville name was chosen to include the K V initials. Following the sudden death of Bert, Rob began an apprenticeship with Winsome and continued to farm with brother Ian at Nar Nar Goon for 11 years.
In 2000, Rob and Kerrie moved to Drouin West, Victoria to continue breeding and developing the Kings Ville herd. Their milking herd will reach 280 this year.
“Breeding and working with cow families that descend from animals bred by previous generations has always been a special link to family members no longer here and is a strong motivation to continue developing those cow families,” Rob said.
The Belle’s have become their largest cow family with outstanding rankings on the top female BPI genomic list, bulls entering AI and show ring success.
The Lassie’s are a strong polled family and of high
dairy type and the Fernleaf family, owned by Em, Meg and Holly, is a worldrenowned cow family, achieving maximum classification scores for age. Petunia, Bella, Melmiss and Cowslip are also prominent families.
Standout cows have included Kings Ville (KV) Petunia 4, KV Lassie 16P, KV Bella 48
KV David Belle 78, KV Memory 15, and KV Getaway Belle, most of which have been classified Excellent 93.
They have had 26 bulls sold into AI. Earlier bulls included KV Armada; who received recognition with an Australian Bull Breeding Award for Jerseys of the 1990s, KV Betahead and KV Padlock. Current active bulls
are KV Madill P, KV Boast, KV Boost, KV Bashful P, KV Qantas, KV Bedford P, and the current number one polled sire KV Boyd P. Show successes have included 1993 Royal Melbourne Show - Junior Champion Heifer, Reserve Interbreed Heifer (KV Petunia 4), Junior Champion Heifer (KV Petunia 4) and Most Successful Breeder Jersey Showcase 1994, Royal Melbourne Show 1994Reserve Champion Cow (KV Petunia 4)
Royal Melbourne Show 1995 - Junior Champion Heifer (K Gemini Heatherbelle 7), and IDW 1999, Junior Champion Heifer (KV Select Heatherbelle).
Royal Melbourne Show success continued in 2011 with Champion Cow (KV Lassie 16P) and Most Successful Exhibitor. Junior Champion Heifer (KV Lassie 37P) at IDW in 2019.
They have had three Supreme Champions at the Central Gippsland Jersey Fair and were most successful exhibitor five times.
On Farm Challenge success included three Great Southern reserve champions and champion two and four-year-olds.
“Showing Jerseys is enjoyed as a family activity and an opportunity to spend time with industry friends,” Rob and Kerrie said.
The herd has achieved Jersey Australia Platinum Production Awards for the past six years.
They breed for the balance of both type and production. Quality udders, dairy frame with strength and bone quality accompanying good feet and legs, fertility and health traits are all aspects Rob and Kerrie try to maintain and improve with each breeding decision. Strength of pedigree and genomics is an important factor in bull selection.
Kings Ville has a strong focus on the polled gene with about 25 per cent of the herd being polled.
Rob and Kerrie feel privileged and honoured to be included in this inaugural award. “It is a recognition of years of devotion and dedication to breeding Jerseys and celebrates the successes of the special cows that have been part of the journey,” they said.
MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT
BROADLIN JERSEYS // BROAD FAMILY
A willingness to be flexible has helped to keep the Broadlin Jersey Stud in the upper echelons of the breed for many decades.
Lisa and Lynton Broad have never rested on their laurels, instead they are constantly looking for ways to improve.
“Broadlin has been a name on everyone’s lips and consistently up there all the time, whether it be at shows, with bulls or in classification and production,” Lisa said.
“The main reason for that success is to be not stuck in your ways,” she added. “It’s good to decide what you’re breeding for and stick to those goals at the time, but have the ability to change the direction you’re going if needed.
“We’ve always bred for production but we had a period where we could focus
more on type because our cows had jumped in production. We made changes when they needed to be made.”
Based at Wonthaggi in Victoria’s South Gippsland, the farm peaks at about 320 cows and remains predominantly as Jersey herd. They also work with their son Gavin who joined the enterprise 13 years ago and his enthusiasm and drive has motivated them to further improve the herd.
Promotion of the herd through showing has been a huge part of the Broadlin story it has been a family affair with children Toni, Gavin and Cassie all
contributing to the successes.
Broadlin was started by Lynton in 1962 when he was just 10 years old. He has inspiration from homeLynton’s father Reg had Francliff Jerseys, also a well-known stud in Jersey circles.
“We’re a bit humbled by being named Master Breeders,” Lisa says. “It’s not something you think about every day, but it recognises all the hard work, particularly by Lynton in doing the groundwork to get it started.”
Prominent cow families in the stud include Illusion, Constance, Ilagay, Bubbles and Vanessa. After their marriage in 1992, Lisa introduced the Bubbles cows to the herd with quick-fire success, with Echo Downs Silver Bubbles winning Grand Champion at the Jersey Showcase – the equivalent of IDW before Jerseys were incorporated into that event – in 1995 and 1996. Echo Downs was Lisa’s stud. Bubbles was a cow family from her parents Beryl and the late Jack Mowat’s herd who also had registered jerseys under the Staxigo prefix.
Lynton had earlier made his mark in the industry with Ileto 28 setting a record sale price and Illusion 33 was top sale price in Camperdown Ileto 13 was junior champion at the Shepparton national in a class of 69 exhibits.
He also recorded significant successes at the Camperdown show and in 2011 won the Great Southern On Farm Challenge Grand
Champion with Constance 2565.
Another highlight was winning Supreme Champion at IDW in 2015 with Illusion 2817. She returned in 2018 to win the Supreme Udder title.
In AI circles, Aussie Gold has been a massive success for the stud, selling a lot of semen worldwide over the past decade and having a significant impact across the globe. Hatman, ALGERNON and Broadway are also prominent bulls bred by Broadlin
Broadlin was one of the first herds in Australia to embrace the use of US semen which dramatically increased both type and production in the herd.
Broadlin continues to evolve and improve and many of the stud’s higher classifications have come in recent years, including their first Excellent 94 with Beryl 3028.
The herd consistently ranks in the top 2 per cent of ABVs.
In 2017 Lynton received a Lex Bunn Award at IDW, recognising quiet achievers who contribute to the industry through their bulls, genetics, judging and other achievements.
In 2018, Lisa and Lynton received a Genetics Australia Breeder Honour Certificate in recognition of their contribution to the Australian dairy industry through the provision of elite genetics.
Lisa received a Power of Women Award at IDW in 2019 in recognition of her excellence, leadership, and achievement within the Australian dairy industry.
MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT
BROOKBORA JERSEYS // BACON FAMILY
The Brookbora Jersey Stud has been travelling in elite circles over recent years.
The Bacon family’s stud has been Premier Breeder for the past four International Dairy Weeks and the Premier Exhibitor for the past three IDW’s
It has also been at or near the top of the BPI rankings and found great AI breeding success domestically and internationally with several popular bulls.
Being named as one of the inaugural Jersey Master Breeders reflects the lasting legacy left by Robert Bacon that is being continued today by his wife Sandra and son Daniel.
Brookbora takes its name from the farm name settled by Robert’s grandparents in 1949 at Tennyson in Northern Victoria. Today they milk 320 Jerseys, raise young stock and produce hay and silage on 293 hectares.
The Brookbora prefix was registered in 1964 by Robert’s parents, Norman and Margaret, and expanded with breeding and select purchases. The original herd was established 1949 by Robert’s grandparents George and Jean.
Robert and his twin brother Colin worked with their parents before they moved in 1992 to Lockington and started their gradual retirement.
Continuing his passion for breeding and farming in general since leaving school in 1981, Robert and Sandra purchased the Brookbora farm and the majority of the herd in 2001, while Colin and wife Narelle purchased a farm locally and established their herd.
The stud has celebrated multiple successes over recent years and the family attributes that to careful breeding and a focus on developing strong cow families.
“When they started on their own, Mum and Dad purchased some of what they considered to be the best cows and families in the breed, to add to what they had bred, and we have continued to be big believers in developing good cow families,” Daniel said.
The most consistent long-standing families in the stud include Love Lies and Standard Lady and the Sandy family has been performing consistently in recent years.
Brookbora is currently working with more than 60 cow families across the herd.
The stud has recorded two home-bred 94-point cows: Brookbora TBone Bonita and Brookbora Vanahlem Estelle, and has bred more than 350 Excellent 90+ cows.
Cows of significance in the herd include Brookbora Love Lies 280 EX 90 (Quicksilver Royal), having a strong influence on the herd today with several consecutive generations of excellent cows; Brookbora Love Lies 509 EX 92 (Lemvig), successful at club level on farm challenges and the Great Southern Challenge with excellent progeny; and Brookbora Valentino Fair Mavis EX 93, was awarded All Breeds Intermediate Champion at International Dairy Week. One of Robert’s all-time favourites was Brookbora Irwin Sandy EX 93, backed by another EX 93, then several generations of Excellent cows
The herd has been at the top end of the BPI rankings in recent years and has received the Platinum Production Award (previously Gold Award) for 29 years.
While focusing on the cows, the Bacons have always been early adopters of new technologies, using AI from the early days through to more recently adding genomics to ensure the best breeding results.
They have always bred for highly productive, sound confirmation animals that last a long time, can continually get back in calf and do a big volume of fat and protein while maintaining their health.
“It’s a combination of trying to do everything right – the right feeding, growing our animals, selecting the right bulls,” Sandra said.
“‘We aim to breed for a complete cow.”
The stud has also been successful in AI programs, with Brookbora Valentino Askn and Brookbora Bushfield-P being highly used bulls, along with the co-bred Pannoo Abe Vanahlem.
Askn has had use across North America, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand and Bushfield in New Zealand and North America, as well as in the local market. Vanahlem is very well known across the industry.
Sandra and Daniel say it is an honour to be part of the initial group of Master Breeders.
“It’s acknowledgement of a lot of hard work and some success along the way and it reflects where Robert’s life-long passion lay in breeding good cows,” Sandra said.
“This recognises his legacy to the jersey breed.’
MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT
CAIRNBRAE JERSEYS // ALAN AND JANINE CARSON
Although now retired from dairy farming, Alan and Janine Carson enjoy watching the ongoing legacy of their Cairnbrae stud.
Their Colac farm and cows were sold in 2021 and Alan and Janine now live near Torquay where they raise Angus beef with their son Tim and his wife Jo, continuing the Cairnbrae stud name.
The first Cairnbrae cow was registered in 1948 and 75 years later they continue to make a mark around Australia.
At the two dispersal sales, the cows were sold to every state except Tasmania and Alan says they get “a hell of a kick” seeing them perform well.
95-point cow and was sold for $35,000 in May.
Cairnbrae had multiple cows classified 94 and more than half the herd was ranked as Excellent 90+.
The stud had two major families - the Daisy family which found great success at shows, and the Estelle family noted for breeding successful AI bulls.
Cairnbrae Montana Daisy was Champion at Royal Melbourne in 2004 and Reserve Champion at IDW and Melbourne in 2005.
Cairnbrae Alf’s Estelle bred 10 Excellent daughters and had three sons in AI – Elton, Cairnbone and Edison. Elton left 4000 daughters in the national herd.
Interbreed with Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 11. At the same time, she was the number one BPI cow in Australia.
“She was the only cow to be IDW champion and number one BPI cow at the same time,” Alan said. “That has never been done before and will probably never be done again. It’s amazing to think the number one numbers cow is also the number one show cow in the country.”
When breeding, Alan and Janine aimed for wide front-ended cows, deep open rib and correct wide rumps, along with immaculate temperament.
“If they had good udders, that was a bonus,” Alan said. “We always felt if they had soft udders, we could correct them. There’s a lot more to a cow than a nice-looking udder.”
Between May 2021 and June 2023, they had five dispersal sales, selling 526 animals at an average of $4981. The second dispersal recorded a $5741 average, a Jersey record
“After dispersing, I knew you would be hearing of Cairnbrae cows for a long time into the future and that has proven to be the case. They have continued to dominate shows around the country since we sold them.”

Cairnbrae Flowers Estelle topped the ASI three years running in the early 2010s. In 2015 at IDW, Cairnbrae had a three-year-old class winner and honourable mention intermediate champion, Cairnbrae Valentino Estelle 2, who unfortunately died about two months later.
In 2018, the stud won three-year-old class and intermediate champion and in 2019 was third in the four-year-old, won five and six-year-old sections and had Champion Cow, Honourable Mention Champion Cow and Reserve Champion
Cairnbrae’s success on the bull market has been as impressive as in the show ring. The stand outs have included Bontino who is selling semen around the world with great success, and Roulette, whose dam was Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 11.
In 2021, Alan was presented a Jersey Australia life membership for 40 years as a classifier and six years as a Board member.
Alan and Janine appreciate qualifying among the first batch of Master Breeders.
“It’s good reward for achievement for breeding magnificent cows,” Alan said. “I’ve always felt the Jersey breed should introduce a Master Breeder award, like the Holsteins, so I’m pleased it has happened.”

BUSHLEA JERSEYS // KUHNE FAMILY
Being named one of Jersey Australia’s inaugural Master Breeders is a career pinnacle for long-time breeder Keith Kuhne.
For Keith, 78 the Master Breeder title is something special. “It’s about the pinnacle” he said. “I have enjoyed breeding Jerseys over my lifetime, and this is the icing on the cake.”
Keiths’ son Wayne and his wife Lisa now run Bushlea Jerseys which was founded by Keith’s father Norman in 1945. They milk 400 cows on 486 acres at Koonwarra, while the 144-acre home farm purchased by Norman in 1938 is used to run young stock.
“Fernleaf” is the outstanding name in the Bushlea profile. “They just keep breeding on,” says Keith. The first Fernleaf was born in 1948, the only daughter from the foundation cow Ecker Fernleaf who was purchased from a Gippsland Stud. All Fernleafs trace back to this cow.
Bushlea Fernleaf bred well herself but her granddaughters and great granddaughters really started to impress. This was influenced by semen imported from a USA bull named A Nine Top Brass. “He was one of the first USA bulls we used and he really set us up,” Keith said.
“We bought 10 straws for a start and flushed our six best
Champions three Reserve Senior Champions, Senior and Grand Champion four times.
cows, all Fernleafs, to him which set that family up even further. He was a total outcross to bulls we had used and had a tremendous influence on our herd.”
His best daughter was Bushlea Brass Fernleaf 10 Ex91 7000 litre cow and Champion Melbourne, Sydney, and Reserve Champion International Dairy Week (IDW).
Fernleafs remain the most prominent family in the Bushlea herd today.
Over the decades Bushlea has bred for correct confirmation. “I believe if you have the correct rump structure you will get a good vessel underneath it,” Keith said.
Bushlea has bred more than 500 Excellent 90+ cows, including three 94-point cows. Bushlea Brook Maybell was twice Champion Cow at IDW.
The stud bred 10 Royal Melbourne Show champions when it was a strong competition in the 1990s and early 2000s.
From 2000 at IDW, Bushlea won Pen of Cows five times, Intermediate Champion three times, Reserve Champion once, two Junior
The last IDW Champion in 2017, Bushlea Van Fernleaf 10, went on to win Supreme Dairy Cow. On Wayne’s recommendation she was offered for sale and set a new Australasian record of $50,000 which still stands today, eclipsing the previous $34.000. She won the same award in 2018 for her new owners.
In 10 years from 1985, Bushlea exhibited at 72 shows, winning 88 Championships, 56 Reserve Championships, 45 Production Rosettes, 368 Firsts, 164 Seconds, and 17 Thirds.
Norman was one of the first breeders to submit a bull, Bushlea Starbrights Prestige, into artificial breeding. The stud has had more than 30 bulls go through the system, including Bushlea BigTop, who is currently performing well.
To establish new cow families, 75 embryos were imported from Canada and the USA. More than 200 embryos have been exported to USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and Germany.
Commencing in 1979 Bushlea held 21 annual
sales, with cattle sold to every state. Since purchasing the new property in 2000 they have held four special sales; the highlight being the 25th sale which averaged $5768 with a top price of $20,000.
Keith has been involved with South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club for more than 60 years and the Victorian Branch Committee for 15 years.
“Judging, classifying, and showing has resulted in many strong and lasting friendships all due to the shared passion for the Jersey cow,” he said.
Wayne and Lisa became partners in 2000 and took over management of Bushlea Jerseys in 2016 and have since maintained the focus on a highly fertile and productive herd.
About four years ago they successfully moved to a seasonal calving, starting on May 1 and calving for 10 weeks. Historically the farm calved three times a year but changed to match the strong winter feed growth and to coincide with lower cost production.
“Fertility is a strong focus,” Wayne said. “We’re trying to use outcross bulls and bring in different genetics to widen the genetic pool without compromising the end result. I’m happy with how the herd is tracking. They are producing well and we’re breeding excellent type cows.”
Wayne welcomed the Master Breeder honour. “We’ve been fortunate to do it in partnership and it’s nice to have recognition for our life’s work,” he said.
MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT
JUGIONG JERSEYS // NICHOLSON FAMILY
The Jersey Master Breeder title recognises achievements over the past 20 years, but the current team behind Jugiong Jerseys understands the importance of a long history.
Started by the Phillip and Veronica Nicolson, Jugiong Jerseys has been in the family for more than 90 years and is run today by brothers Pat and Brendon.
“It’s an honour to be recognised as Master Breeders, not only for Brendan and myself but for our parents, uncle and aunt who were involved and our grandparents,” Pat said.
“The Master Breeder takes into account the past 20 years but a lot more years have gone into where we are today. We owe much of that to generations before us.”
The stud’s name came from the NSW town Jugiong where Veronica was born and raised. For the first 20 years, the Jersey stud was just a sideline as they developed a sheep and cropping farm at Tatyoon in western Victoria.
Their son Arthur and his wife Iris continued the stud, farming at Moyston near The Grampians, and their two sons, Bill and Phillip and their wives Evelyn and Amy kept the farming tradition going.
Pat and Brendon, the sons of Bill and Evelyn, together
with their wives Carmen and Tenealle are the fourth generation to run the stud.
In 1973 the family moved from Moyston to Girgarre, west of Shepparton, where Pat and Brendon milk about 450 Jerseys.
Jugiong Stud has had many notable cow families over the years, dominated by Daydream and Leonie.
The first Leonie cow was bought two years after the stud was established and has been part of the herd for nearly 90 years. The foundation cow for the Daydreams was purchased in 1943 and that family continued to prosper as the breed improved.
“Production and higher milk flow cows have always been our number one priority through all the generations,” Pat said. “We’ve always liked good type cows but not at the expense of production.”
The Nicholson family has always used the best bulls from anywhere in the world to achieve their production goals. Today they mainly use Australian-bred bulls,
mostly from longestablished Australian cow families, along with a few from the US.
“That reflects the strong status of Australian Jerseys,” Pat said.
In the past 20 years the best cow bred by the stud has been Jugiong Petunia 5574 who was classified Excellent 94, the third to reach such classification following Jugiong Daydream 193 and Jugiong Daydream 349. The stud has had multiple classified as Excellent 90+ over the decades.
High index ratings haven’t been a priority over the years, with production and type taking preference, and consequently Jugiong hasn’t had a lot of bulls enter the AI system.
However, one bull in partnership with Troy Mauger, Rowantree Jugiong Megastar, proved to be quite popular.
Over the years Jugiong has had a lot of show success, particularly with the prominent Daydream family.
Although they haven’t shown as much in recent times, Jugiong Daydream 8042 won the 2023 three-year-old in milk title at International Dairy Week and was intermediate champion at the Gippsland Jersey Fair.
The Nicholson family remains committed to Jerseys.
“For total solids produced for the size of the cow and for what they eat, you can’t beat a Jersey for their economy and efficiency, and they’re much easier to handle,” Pat said.
MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT
KAARMONA JERSEYS // SPRUNT FAMILY
Being named a Master Breeder isn’t a new experience for the Sprunt family.
After achieving Holstein Australia Master Breeder status about five years ago, the family has added the same title for their Kaarmona stud with the Jersey breed.
“I was quite taken aback and chuffed when notified about it; I don’t think of ourselves in this realm,” Rohan Sprunt said. “We just like breeding good efficient, profitable cows with udders we like to milk.”
“We were fortunate enough to attain the Master Breeder award in the Holstein breed some years ago, but to awarded Master Breeder status in Jerseys is truly humbling. When I think of Master Breeders in Jerseys, I think back to those great iconic studs such as Francliff, Belgonia and the like.
Kaarmona was started in 1965 by Rohan’s parents John and Jennifer. It was named from their home farm location at Kaarimba and where John grew up in Ardmona.
Now fourth generation farmers, Rohan and his brother Graeme leased the farm from their mother in 1994 to start their business venture and later bought the property in 2000.
“We still have at least one cow family – Arkona – that dad worked with,” Rohan said. “He won the World Conference Champion Cow with an Arkona cow at Tatura in 1976 and we’ve still got descendants of that cow.”
In 1994 when Rohan and Graeme returned to the farm, they started with 100 cows, including more than
70 newly purchased Holsteins. Now the herd is 400 with only 100 Holsteins. “We had retained about 20 Jersey heifers that went to an older brother’s place when the family got out of milking for a while. When Graeme and I came back, we got the 20 heifers back and started breeding up from there.”
They purchased BIE BB Babe in 1994. “Her mother was imported to Australia from the US as a live animal by the Bie Syndicate in Gippsland,” Rohan said. “I thought it was a unique opportunity to get into a new family to Australia. She was an outcross in genetics for a lot of bulls. She ended up having 14 Excellent daughters in Australia, one of the highest on record.
companies along the way, particularly in a long association with Genetics Australia going back to bulls like Valerian, a proven bull that came from this farm.
We have also used World Wire Sires’ mating program for at least 20 years, whereby we select a bull team, no matter who markets them.
We really value the industry relationships we have established along the way and the improvement to our business that they have helped us to achieve.
“We’ve now surpassed Babe number 400 going back to her. She was probably the best we ever had; she was a true brood cow.”
Babe is now one of the most prolific cow families in Australia and the highest BPI young bull in Australia is a Babe bull, Kaarmona Jeronimo Brady (ET).
Other prominent families in the stud include Marie, Sandy, Impish, Belle, Maggie May, Nellie, Charo, Lovelies
Kaarmona has supplied bulls to the AI market for a long time.
“This award is not just about us – it’s for the foundations set by our predecessors and for our industry connections,” Rohan said. “We’ve worked with AI
The stud has done well at On Farm Challenges, scored an Honorable Mention for a Babe at IDW in 1995 and a cow we purchased, Brunetta Brook Marie Ex92, was HM Champion Cow IDW 2000 and then Reserve Champion Cow IDW 2006. A granddaughter of Marie was second at IDW and later sold for $21,100.
Kaarmona Parade Babe 2, Ex93 was HM Intermediate Champion IDW ’08, won Best Udder at the IDW Jersey Show 2010 and was also a two-time overall Champion of the Great Southern Challenge.
The stud has had multiple 93-point cows and at least 50 per cent of the current eligible herd have been classified as Excellent.
The brothers look for strong cows with good udders, positive milk with high components and fertility.
“I’m really focusing on fertility and mastitis resistance at the moment and I’m trying to get away from short teats,” Rohan said.
MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT
WALLACEDALE JERSEYS // WALLACE FAMILY
Luke and Mel Wallace of Wallacedale Jerseys want to do their bit to help the Jersey breed to grow.
“We never sold anything we wouldn’t milk ourselves,” Luke said. “We want the Jersey population to grow so we sell cows that we hope will perform well for people.”
They have had plenty of opportunities for that over the long history of the stud. Based at Poowong in south Gippsland for more than 60 years, Wallacedale Jerseys was started by Luke’s grandparents Vic and Val Wallace in Western Victoria and continued by his parents Cliff and Marieka who remain involved.
They currently milk about 170 Jerseys, downsized a bit since going on the Lely robotic system last November.
The Melanie and Melaine cow families put the herd on the map, starting with two cows purchased by Cliff and Marieka in the early 1990s.
“We did a lot of embryo transfer work with those cows and really focused on them and they turned into great brood cows,” Luke said.
“Dad wasn’t happy with the genetics of the herd at that time and Dad decided to buy from an established cow family.”
Denfield Melanie P36 and Denfield Melaine M28 were maternal sisters – Melaine came about from a misprint on a pedigree.
They were balanced cows, big on production and great breeders that lived for a long time. One of the original cows milked till she was about 18. “She was Excellent 92 and had a bunch of great daughters, and was a great cow to work with.”
The three most influential cows on the herd have been Denfield Melaine M28 Ex90, Wallacedale Barbs Melaine 2 Ex92 and Wallacedale Jace Melaine 4 Ex92. Between them they produced in excess of 270,000 litres of lifetime milk with 26 daughters scoring Excellent!
Jace Melaine 4 won the Great Southern Challenge as well as being the dam of Elite Sire CSCMelvara.
At one point about 70 per cent of the herd stemmed
from those three cows, today it’s about 50 per cent. “People were chasing that cow family – when they became popular, we sold a lot of good cows from those two lines,” Luke said. They bought in more successful families, including Madge, which originated from the same herd as Melanie and Melaine, and Melys from Kings Vale.
“The key we found was highlighting high performance cow families. It doesn’t matter how good the bull is if the cow family isn’t up to scratch.”
The herd has featured several Excellent 93 cows, including one Melanie now six generation Excellent, and several cows won local shows over the years. Along with in milk class winners at IDW and a Junior Champion IDW sash.
Wallacedale has also produced many successful proven bulls, led by CSC Melvara and CRV Marvarie which both received Elite Sire awards.
When breeding, Luke and Mel try not to use bulls with negatives for strength traits. “We’re always very conscious of good udders and longevity, which is something we have been able to build into the herd,” Luke said.
Wallacedale has herd tested monthly ever since recording began back in Vic and Val’s time. They also classify every heifer that calves. The herd was part of the initial genomics program and has since been a GINFO herd.
“We’ve always felt sharing of data and information is
crucial to the improvement of the breed,” Luke said. “The Jersey community is a special one to be involved in and our family has made many great life-long friends along the journey.”
The herd is now 99 per cent A2A2. “Our breeding program is steadily incorporating the polled gene,” Luke said. “Currently, we have six young genomic sires available, with five of those being polled.
A long-held goal of having genetics used overseas has been achieved over the past two years with Wallacedale semen being exported to NZ, Italy, Pakistan, South Africa, Switzerland, and the US.
Being named Master Breeder is “without a doubt the highlight of our breeding career,” Luke said. “It’s humbling to be recognised for breeding a good number of animals considered to be elite in the breed,” he said.
He also acknowledges influences. “My grandfather was a mad keen Jersey person. I spent every spare minute doing Jersey things with him. His great friend Bazil Boardman had a lovely herd and was very giving with his breeding knowledge too.
“Dad was an even bigger influence in keeping me focused on the commercial importance and workability performance of the herd to get me on the right breeding path.
“I was also a classifier for five years and that was very beneficial. My main mentor during that time was Jim Parker who was a great teacher.”
MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT
SHIRLINN JERSEYS // WILSON FAMILY
For more than 50 years, Shirlinn Jerseys have been a mainstay of the breed in Australia.
Named after founders
Shirley and Lindsay Wilson, who registered their first cows in 1971, the Shirlinn stud was recently recognised by Jersey Australia for its longevity with a 50-year award.
Now it has been recognised for its excellence by being named one of the inaugural Master Breeders.
Shirley and Lindsay’s son Brian has farmed with his wife Vicki at Tamworth for 21 years and milks 200 Jerseys year-round, where they process their own milk for Peel Valley Milk. They are now joined by their son Todd and his wife Sarah.
The stud has produced many notable cows, with the Finch family being prominent for many decades.
“Going back to the 1980s, our Finch family became our most prominent and well-known family and they are still one of our best cow families today,” Brian said.
Three different Finch cows won Champion Cow titles at the Royal Sydney Show.
“They always seem to be good type and have aboveaverage production, which
is what you’re looking for in any cows,” Brian said.
The stud has had several highly classified cows over the years, most notably SHIRLINN ICY EVE that went Excellent 95 in 2014.
“Our best two cows – or at least our favourite cows –over the 50-year period have been Shirlinn Starfinch and Shirlinn Icy Eve,” Brian added.
Shirlinn Icy Eve has been the stud’s best-known cow in recent years. She was Supreme Champion at Royal Sydney Show three years running and also Grand Champion at International Dairy Week in 2016.
“When Mum and Dad started, they were always keen on the showing side and did six or seven shows a year to promote the stud,” Brian said. “That has always been part of our business and continues today, although there are not as many shows these days.”
They classify twice a year to stay up-to-date with information, using the classification system as a both a breeding and marketing tool.
Shirlinn breeds for balanced cows and for production. “If we want to keep breeding, we’ve got to have
profitable cows so the production part of it is obviously number one,” Brian said. “We also like to have high type cows that we enjoy getting up to milk in the morning.
“We like to have the balance of production and type, which is what most people want.”
Brian, who was on the JA Board for more than a decade until his retirement earlier this year, described the Master Breeder title as a great honour.
“To be one of the first group of farmers to receive this new award is a real honour,” he said. “Different breed organisations around the world have awards like this and it’s always looked upon favourably.
“It’s another marketing tool and a reward for all the hard work over the years.”
NEXT-GEN JERSEY BACKED BY PROFITABLE PARENTAGE
ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST EXCITING JERSEY SIRES WAS BRED SPECIFICALLY FOR PROFITABILITY AND PRODUCTION. THE FACT HE’S BACKED BY A PROVEN COW FAMILY IS AN ADDED BONUS.
Warrain TRASK (CSCTRASK)sold by ABS Australia - is sitting well on the Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) - at fourteen on the latest genomic Balanced Performance Index ranking.
Bred by the Cockerell family, Warrain Jerseys, Waaia, Victoria, CSCTRASK is a product of decades of concentrated breeding, according to their long-time family friend and Central Sires Co-operative board member Andrew Younger.
“The Cockerells’ number one aim has always been to get profitable production out of cows,” he said.
“They’ve always been in the top two or three production herds in the country, averaging 300 kilograms of fat, 230 to 240 kilos of protein and 6500 litres.”
These impressive Jersey figures from their 300-cow herd is reflected in CSCTRASK’s proof.
At 364 for BPI, +479 for Milk, 25kg Protein and 13kg Fat, CSCTRASK is also “well above” average for milking speed, temperament and likeability and is 107 for Overall Type.
Sitting “equal top” of the Jersey breed for Mammary System at 113, there’s a chance he will also deliver other desired traits for dairy farmers as well, according to Andrew.
“There’s a high correlation between good udders and cows lasting,” he said. “And the longer she lasts, the more profit she makes.”
The Cockerells began their dairy farming career as sharefarmers in Western Victoria before moving to Waaia in northern Victoria more than 40 years ago.
Andrew said John and Marg Cockerell were always seeking profitable production out of cows.
“They never chased shows - or show cows,” he said. “But they’d always enter local on-farm challenges, with some success.”
CSCTRASK is the son of Matt Treasure 3 EX-90 - who sold for $20,000 at the Cockerells’ first milking herd dispersal last year.
At the time, Matt Treasure 3 EX-90 was the number three Jersey genomic cow in Australia.
Peaking at 8,500 litres a lactation or 750 kilograms of milk solids, she has an average PI of 114.
Matt Treasure 3 EX-90’s dam - a EX-90 Vanahlem - produced 8,400 litres or 723 kilograms of milk solids in a lactation with a PI of 103 as a two-year-old.
Her lineage continued with big production and top-end type genetics - such as Matt Treasure 3 EX-90’s fourth dam, a VG-87 Jace, which delivered 55,924 litres across her lifetime with a PI of 116.
The Matt Treasure 3 EX-90 cow family was founded from Yarravale Top Treasure - a Top Brass daughter - from the Tradition Cow family at Yarravale. The Tradition cow family was also successful at Oakbrae Jerseys at Kyabram, Victoria, and responsible for bulls such as OADI and OBAN which were popular more than 40 years ago.

JOINT VENTURE TO OPEN NEW DOORS FOR JERSEY BREEDERS
THE AUSTRALIAN DAIRY INDUSTRY HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER AND THE AUSTRALIAN JERSEY HAS NEVER HAD A HIGHER PROFILE ON THE WORLD STAGE AND THE TIME IS RIGHT TO CAPITALISE ON THAT.
The August ABV release and our most recent Jersey Sire Directory marks the first offering under our new corporate structure.
On July 1 we launched our new entity, Genetics Australia Holdings Pty Ltd. You won’t notice any major differences in the short-term as we continue to trade as Genetics Australia and offer the same products and services. However, the new joint venture with global herd improvement leader URUS Group will open many doors and we expect future catalogues will offer even more opportunities for our members and customers.
This is a genuine win for everyone. There will be no change to the employees that you work with, or the brands and services you can access. Our full catalogue easily matches anything we have offered in the past, but importantly we are confident that the best is yet to come.
We entered this joint venture from a position of strength and with an eye on the future. We realised that partnering with one of the large multinational market participants was vital for Genetics Australia to remain as a long-term sustainable locally-based genetics provider to Australian farmers.
It means we can bring the best of the worlds to you as well being able to forge greater sales for Australian Jerseys internationally, a win win for all Australian Jerseys are rapidly growing in appeal in many overseas countries where they continue to be used to advantage over cows that need an injection of dairy strength and power.
