FROM THE FRONT DESK
Irecently had the opportunity to attend World Dairy Expo on behalf of the Association as part of a trade mission to promote and market Australian Jerseys. This is a growing market for Australian Jerseys and was an important step towards increasing and expanding the market opportunity.
The trade mission was supported by Genetics Australia, Central Sires and Agri Gene and included Holstein Australia as a cross promotion of Australian genetics.
The mission was a great success with the key take homes being:
• Consumer awareness of Australian Jersey is very high.
• Interest in using Australian Jersey is high.
• BPI was a known breeding indicator that was being recognised and used.
• Outside of the North American market, strong interest was received from breeders or AI representatives from Turkey, New Zealand, France, Guatemala, Costa Rica and the UK.
We can certainly be proud of the Australian Jersey and what you, the breeder, over many years have developed and shaped to be the Jersey of choice for many across the world.
I congratulate our Australian Jersey breeders on this success. It’s your hard work and commitment to your breeding programs that is driving this opportunity. You have certainly made the job of promoting Australian Jerseys on the global stage significantly easier.
Glen Barrett General Manager
On behalf of all at Jersey Australia, I wish members, families, and friends a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Enjoy the holiday period and we look forward to seeing you all in 2023.

2023 Dairy’s Finest Sale
Its time to start thinking about whether a suitable lot for the 2023 Dairy’s Finest Sale to be held during the AGM. The 2023 AGM and Conference is hosted by the Beautizone Club and will be based in Coffs Harbour.
The Dairy’s Finest Sale has fast established itself as the premier multi-vendor sale in Australia creating a sale average record in its first year in 2021 of $8178 and followed this in 2022 with in 2022 with an average of $5461.00 with elite pedigrees across type, production and genetic merit being the cornerstone of the sale lots
Daniel Bacon is co-ordinating and collecting pedigrees for the 2023 sale. Contact Daniel on 0407 753 324 to discuss your interest.
Changes to JA Structure
The Jersey Australia Board is taking steps to review the Associations structures with our clubs and state committee.
This consideration is being driven by a recognised deficiency in our structure that does not see a direct link between the Jersey Breeder / Cattle Clubs around Australia and Jersey Australia and the role change of the State sub-branches which now sees the State Committee either functioning as a club in some states, coming together for a single purpose such as a state show or not functioning at all.
Jersey Australia will be in contact with clubs over the coming with weeks to seek your engagement and input into how you consider would be the best way to affiliate clubs with the National body and ensure that all clubs meet the requirements to enable Jersey Australia can provide critical support such as insurance coverage for clubs and members under the JA umbrella policies.
State Committees have been informed of the changes that will State Committees removed as affiliated subbranches to Jersey Australia as of February 28, 2023, in line with the end of the membership year.
Current funding allocations towards the support of State Committees will be redistributed to the Jersey Australia Community Grants fund to support a range of member activities across Australia.
If you have any question of the planned changes, please contact Glen on 0418 466 371 or any of the Jersey Australia Directors.

Departure from Class Team
Jersey Australia would like to thank Lisa Broad who has recently stepped down from the Classifier Team
Lisa commenced classifying in 1995 and progressed to be one of our most experienced and respected classifiers assessing many 1000’s of cows over her career behind the palm.
In finishing up here time on the classifier panel, Lisa recognised the many herds visiting amazing cows to score, and friendships developed across the country as one of the key outcomes of being a classifier.
Thank You Lisa

AUSTRALIAN JERSEYS MAKE A MARK AT WORLD DAIRY EXPO
AUSTRALIAN JERSEY GENETICS ARE MAKING THEIR MARK ON THE WORLD STAGE AFTER A SUCCESSFUL JOINT TRADE MISSION TO WORLD DAIRY EXPO IN THE UNITED STATES.
FOR the first time, Jersey Australia organised a combined trade site at the Expo, also including Holstein Australia, Genetics Australia, AgriGene, Central Sires Co-op with support from National Herd Improvement Association of Australia (NHIA) and the aim of promoting all Australian genetics.
The ‘team Australia’ approach has been hailed a success with plans for similar missions in coming years.
Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said the mission would build on the high levels of consumer awareness and interest in Australian genetics and Jerseys.
“I think we are making a mark,” Mr Barrett said. “We had a regular stream of people visiting the stand, and consumer awareness in our products was high.
“There were a number of people who commented positively on using Australian bulls now and in the past.”
There was interest from across the globe. “We saw representatives from Turkey, Guatemala, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Canada and other countries and we opened wide market opportunities and interest,” Mr Barrett said.
“Consumers from anywhere in the world are now more aware of Australian Jerseys.”
Mr Barrett expects further joint campaigns. “We see this as a multiyear commitment,” he said. “We see the need to keep building on the opportunities we’ve created at this
year’s Expo. For most of us, it was our first-time attending World Dairy Expo so it was about understanding what works and what doesn’t and building on those opportunities in future years
“It’s a global marketplace and World Dairy Expo is an opportunity to bring key players together. It’s a bucket list event for breeders to get to at least once in their lives.”
“For us it confirmed the opportunities for Australian Jersey genetics. We’ve bred from the best in the world so we have one of the most diverse Jersey populations which adds out-cross opportunities and we believe the Australian Jersey is the best Jersey cow in the world by quite a way at the moment.”
Genetics Australia export manager Rob Derksen said he was pleasantly surprised by the level of awareness about Australian Jersey bulls.

“Clearly a lot of US and Canadian dairy farmers are aware of their success and it was a good opportunity to catch up with people from countries outside North America who had used Australian genetics,” Mr Derksen said.
The delegation left the Expo with high hopes for Australian exports.
“It’s looking very positive for genetics from Australia,” Mr Derksen said.
“A lot of farmers are wanting to tap into cow families bred by Australian breeders, which emphasises that Australian breeders have done a world-class job in developing cow families that are recognised internationally as the best you can get from anywhere.”
Mr Derksen said the World Dairy Expo was a meeting place for the industry. “It’s the place to meet and connect with other people and we all made valuable contacts,” he said.

“You don’t measure it in actual sales; it’s more about a promotion going forward and I’m very confident there will be ongoing demand for Australian Jerseys.
“We see merit in putting Australian genetics on the world stage. We should be proud of what we’ve got to offer in Jerseys and the other breeds.”
Jersey Australia farmer members and breeders Con and Michelle Glennen, Wayne Kuhne and Anthea Day also attended the Expo at Madison Wisconsin from October 2-7.
Con and Michelle said they attended to push what they believe to be good genetics.
“We wanted to get more access to the world and the easiest way to do that is have the world come to you at Madison,” Mr Glennen said.
“We made quite a few contacts with different countries that we might

Mrs Glennen said the mission would yield long-term benefits. “We didn’t have anyone say they want 25 straws of your best bull right now, but contacts were made and it gives people time to think about it,” she said.
“We had the right people there to represent Australian genetics. They hope to do it again. “It’s a good experience and you get to see products that aren’t yet registered for use in Australia but will be, so you can pick the ones you think will be handy here,” Mr Glennen said. He added that Australian cows stand up well on the world stage.
“Generally, our cows have a wider muzzle, wider chest and heavier rumen capacity. I think Australian Jerseys definitely have something to offer to the world.”

PRESERVING PREMIUM DATA THROUGH CORRECT RECORD TRANSFERS
LEO MCGRATH –WOOTANGA PARK JERSEYS WESTERN VICTORIA
FORthe McGrath family of Western Victoria, investing in high genetic merit bloodlines has been a way to fast-track their transition towards a fully registered herd of high-performance Jerseys. The correct transfer of new cows at herd recording will preserve the valuable genomic, performance and pedigree records, provide data accuracy and reliability, and maintain the premium value of their investments.
Eddie and Anne McGrath, dairy with their daughters Rachel and Maureen,
son Leo, and Eddie’s brother Andrew, milking 400 cows on 400 hectares at Orford, 20kms north of Port Fairy in Victoria’s southwest. A recent decision to downsize the dairy will see the McGraths reduce their numbers from 400 to 250 cows, while expanding their small mob of ewes and beef cows to diversify their business.
With a growing interest in registered cattle, Rachel and Leo have taken over the dairy breeding program. Since establishing Wootanga Park Jerseys, the siblings have made regular investments in elite Jerseys with a focus on deep cow families with high-ranking breeding values. In 2020, they purchased the complete herd of renowned Northern Victorian breeders Bernie and Carol McManus.
With nearly 60 years of production and pedigree data, the Bercar Jersey herd has been among the topranking Jersey herds in Australia since the inception of Australian Breeding Values (ABVs), ranking No.2 on the Australian Balanced Performance Index (BPI) at the time of the sale.
For Leo, the Bercar cows were the perfect foundation of his Jersey stud. “It was an opportunity that was too good to pass up,” Leo said. “It was a magnificent herd – not really ‘show’ cows – but cows with great body, nice udders and lots of potential to milk.”
Sharing his passion for breeding and breeding history with the young dairyman, Bernie provided Leo with handwritten pedigrees for each cow, tracing back to the 1960s to their genetic recovery origins.
“Rachael and I are very excited to continue that history and building these great cow families,” Leo said.
With the support of Bernie and his local herd recording team, Leo successfully transferred the records of the Bercar cows along with them decades of valuable data, maintaining the crucial links between their performance, pedigree and genomic data.
This allowed individuals such as Bercar Peer 85 (at 2yo) to maintain her breeding values, claiming the No.62 position in the Jersey rankings in DataGene’s April 2022 ABV release with a BPI +365 (April 2022).
Leo now plans to use genomic testing and strategic bull selection to build on these established pedigrees.
“Rachel and I have a real interest in breeding better cows,” Leo said.
“We’re trying to select the best bulls and carefully choose the right bull for each cow.”
Leo’s long-term goal is to have his herd listed among the top BPI Jersey
herds in Australia – along with a few show cows.
“I’d love to be able to show and sell my stud cows, and to breed top BPI cows and bulls,” Leo says. “But to build their profiles, I need that history and data behind them.”
While the transfer of the Bercar records occurred seamlessly, it was not the same for all of Leo’s investments. Recently Leo discovered gaps in the records of several of his new cows, including the highly ranked Brookbora Love Lies 748 EX-91.
Bred by Robert and Sandra Bacon of Brookbora Jerseys in Northern Victoria, Love Lies 748 was bought as a milking 2-year-old at the Global Impact Supremacy Sale in 2020.
Boasting a BPI of +298 (April 2022), the former IDW Youth Show Champion ranks among the top 5% of the breed.
However, when Leo added her to his on-farm herd management software, without notifying his herd recoding centre, he unknowingly created a duplicate National ID, therefore disconnecting her performance data from the broader herd improvement network.
If this error was not rectified, any performance and progeny performance data achieved at the McGrath’s would not contribute to future ABV calculations, as well as limiting her ability for potential production or performance awards at Jersey Australia.
Fortunately for Leo, the error was identified, and the records are being rectified by his herd recording centre.
“As soon as I realised what had happened, I contacted my herd test rep for help,” Leo said.
“We have since identified her correct National ID and are working towards getting her data history merged with the new records.”
By correcting the transfer error, Leo hopes Love Lies 748 will return among the top ABV listings published in August, with the goal of developing his own branch of the high genetic merit family.
“We want to build a top-ranking herd with cows like Love Lies as the foundation,” he said.
“Continuing her breeding is important to us, so it’s important to have the data right too.”
Matthew Singleton
14th September 1929 – 18th March 2022
Aged 92 years
With the passing of Matt Singleton aged 92 years, the Jersey breed has lost a stalwart and a major contributor to the breed’s history. A large crowd attended the Memorial Service at Finley where the Singletons had farmed since the late 1970’s after moving from Coffs Harbor. Matts service and devotion to his family and community was quite staggering.
Aged 18 he helped found the Bon Glen Farmers Club, President and Secretary of numerous P and C Associations, State President of NSW Junior Farmers, Captain Crossmaglen Bushfire Brigade, Community member of Coffs Harbor Aged Care Home, Trustee of Coffs Harbour show ground and Life member of Junior Famers NSW.
He was President of NSW Jersey Herd Society 1988 – 1992, Vice President 1970- 1997, Classifier, Life member and Patron NSW Jersey Herd Society.
Joined the Masons in 1953, became Grand Master and an active member until passing.
Matt married Nancy King on the 26th November 1955
His service and devotion to his Country and State through his parliamentary roles was remarkable. He was chairman of the Bon Ville branch of the Country Party from 1957 – 1971. He was Chairman of the Electoral councils for the sate seat of Raleigh 1957 – 1971 and the Federal seat of Cowper form 1958 – 1971.
Matt was the Country Party and the National Party Member for Clarence form 1971 – 1981 and Member for Coffs Harbour from 1981 – 1990 in the NSW Legislative Assembly. He was the Minister for Administrative Services and Assistant Minister for Transport. He was the brains behind
the 3 by 3 levy and the insulation of the cats eyes on NSW country roads. He resigned from politics in 1990 having made a lasting and impressive contribution to his country.
While a Member of Parliament and a Member of the NSW Jersey Committee he was able to have implemented a quality payment system for milk after having encountered strong opposition from famer groups who wanted payment on volume only.
His legacy still remains and farmers are still benefiting from quality payment.
The Aghadreena Stud was formed in the 1940’s after Matt and brothers; Bill and Peter had developed a picturesque Crossmaglen property. Clearing of the land and hills led to wonderful crops of bananas and cash crops of peas, greens and tomatoes through innovative methods. This gave the brothers the
opportunity to diversify with Bill continuing the bananas and Matt and Peter developing the dairy. This is where Matt’s love of Jersey’s began with the purchase of a line of Jerseys.
A milk run also commenced to Coffs Harbour in 1957 and continued for approximately 20 years until it was deemed unsafe by authorities to sell raw milk.
Ian and Robert took over the farm workload in the late 1970’s due to Matt’s political commitments. The irrigation area at Finley in the Riverina proved irresistible to the family due to the diversity of farming and opportunities.
The move came in 1994 and Ian and Robert set up what has become a great dairy operation with Matt’s support. The purchase of adjoining properties and others has seen the operation become very diversified and successful.
Grandchildren now figure prominently in the day to day operation and innovation.
Matt and Nancy relocated to Finley in 2003 to continue their association with farming.
Matt was devastated by the sudden passing of Nancy in 2007 and it was his resolve and support of a loving family that saw him maintain his own life in the same house.
Matthew Singleton’s interest and generous contribution to the Jersey breed continued till his passing. He loved shows, field days; Cattle club functions, Jersey sales, Dairy Week and a chat with Jersey enthusiasts.
He will be sadly missed and life wont be the same without him.

■ Tell us a little bit about making organic milk?
The pasture is very important due to us not being able to add conventional supplements as you would with a regular milking herd.
■ Farming highlights
Seeing heifers improve each year with their production and then joining the herd.
■ How old is the Hann herd?
The herd originated from Jerseys that my grandfather began milking in the 1940s.
■ Favourite place you’ve travelled to Paris.
■ How do you relax when you’re not farming? I watch my kids play sport or read a good book if I can stay awake!

Management Breeding Values
DataGene produce a number of Management Breeding Value which are design to assist farmers in making key herd level management decision in keys areas such as calving intervals, feed costs, fertility and survival to improve herd health, reduce costs and increase profitability.
GESTATION LENGTH
✓ The Gestation Length ABV assist farmers in shortening the calving interval between lactations by shortening the gestation period of the pregnancy. The ABV identifies bulls whose calves are born earlier than the expected due date. A Bul with a Gestation Length ABV of less than zero is expected to have a shorter gestation period than the expected. A Bull with an ABV of -5 is expected to be five days shorter in gestation.
DAUGHTER FERTILITY
✓ Fertility is a key concern of farmers and why the Jersey breed has had a significant advantage over many many years, it is an area where the Jersey Breed has waned in recent times as key high use bulls of significance have had below average fertility and in impact in this area has been an accepted sacrifice to gain significant overall benefits in breeding programs.
✓ The Daughter Fertility ABV indicates the bull’s ability to produce daughters that are more likely to get bulls pregnant earlier. Breeders should use bulls with a Daughter Fertility ABV of greater than 100 to increase the number of cows in your herds who are expected to be pregnant by the 6-week in calf rate after joining.
CELL COUNT / MASTITIS RESISTANCE
✓ Mastitis can have a significant impact on your herd, with lost milk production, reduce payments from your milk company and treatment costs all impacting your farm profitability. Genetics can play a significant role in reducing mastitis in your herd and DataGene produce 2 breeding values to assist farms in breeding cows with greater mastitis resistance.
✓ The CELL COUNT ABV identifies bulls who produce daughter with a greater ability to resist a mastitis infection than the average. The average in the ABV is set at 100. To improve your mastitis resistance in your herd, select bulls with an ABV of greater than 100.
✓ The MASTITIS RESISTANCE ABV brings together 3 key sets of data and information of 305-day somatic cell count records, udder depth and clinical mastitis records to produce the ABV and is a more direct in targeting mastitis than the CELL COUNT ABV
✓ When selecting bulls, choose bulls with an ABV of greater than 100 to increase your herds mastitis resistance.
