It was a very successful visit to World Dairy Expo and the opportunity for Aussie Jersey genetics to make a significant impact to the jersey breed globally is huge. I have said this a few times but the quality of the Jersey cow that the Australian Jersey breeders provide, is the world’s best and one you should all be very proud. My congratulations and thanks to you.

This month we see the return of the Great Southern Challenge which we have been unable to run since 2019 with COVID and last year’s devastating flood. We are excited about this and we wish all members who have cows exhibiting in both the Great Southern and Great Northern Challenges the very best of luck.

Jersey Australia is excited to be part of the emerging Australian Dairy Youth program and a key driver in bringing this to fruition in partnership with Holstein Australia, Brown Swiss Australia, Illawarra Australia, Guernsey Australia, and the Aussie Red Breeds. Keep an eye out for more information on the pending launch at International Dairy Week (IDW) 2024. This program will offer some great opportunities for young breeders across Australia as well as aiming to provide support and assistance to existing regional dairy youth programs.

Jersey Club Requirements

Our thanks to all the Jersey Clubs who have forwarded their AGM minutes and or actioned their club AGM over the last couple of months. To those clubs who have been unable to do so and sought an exemption to the requirement to enable your club entries into the Great Southern or Great Northern Challenges, the Board has granted the exemption for this year however, all clubs are on notice that you will be required to have completed this before next year.

Any club that has not run for some time whose members in that regions consider there is limited opportunity to re-invigorate the club need to actively ensure that they take proper steps to close the club, particularly if the club is incorporated and there is an active bank account if this hasn’t already been completed. If the club bank account is inactive for seven years, the funds are automatically transferred to unclaimed funds which then becomes a difficult process for members to reclaim access to the account should they seek to re-vitalise the club.

Running events such as the on-farm challenges in your region has some inherent risk that are not covered by insurance if there is no active club to run the event. This may push the legal liability back onto the organisers if an issue arises.

The Board will be looking at ways and means that in regions where clubs are no longer active, we can still provide opportunities for members in those regions to be able to come together to run events like an On Farm Challenge and have regional representation in the competitions.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Now he wants to play a role in ensuring future generations have the same opportunities, and at the same time contribute to the growth of the breed.

“I think back over the years to when I started showing cows and doing things with our local cattle club as a kid, and to when I had an overseas scholarship with Jersey New South Wales in 2005 to travel to North America, Europe and Jersey Island,” David says.

“They were very good experiences. Whether it’s on-farm challenges, club level functions or even larger shows and events, the network of Jersey enthusiasts I’ve met along the way wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t have a strong breed association to bring us all together.

“Joining the Board is a way of ensuring we continue that for future generations, including my kids. That’s part of my motivation.”

Born and raised on a dairy farm, David grew up around Jerseys and never lost his love of the breed.

He is filling a vacancy until next year’s AGM when he will then stand for a full two-year term.

“I was invited to come on and thought it was a privilege to be nominated and have the opportunity to work with like-minded people who are all heading in the same direction,” David said.

He doesn’t come to the Board with any underlying agendas but wants to contribute to the breed’s positive momentum. “I’d just like to support the strategies and work hard to deliver what the Board has already built,” he said.

While joining the Board with an open mind, David says his strengths are in marketing, promotions and supporting events.

“It’s my first time on a board so I’ve got a lot to learn before I found out how my roles sits.”

Overall, David is happy with the direction being taken for Jerseys. “Jerseys are gaining popularity and recognition,” he said. “I think Jerseys are on a real roll and their numbers are growing in other herds because people are starting to see their successes and understand the value in the breed. They are value-adding to their milk. Jersey milk is highly sought after and very well regarded by the general public and dairy processors.

“There is a lot of potential there to grow the breed further because of the appetite processors and the general public have for Jersey milk.”

David’s connection to Jerseys stems back to 1981 in New Zealand when his family started Brunchilli Jerseys. The family moved to Finley in southern NSW in 1997, bringing their cow families over from New Zealand as embryos and they continued to build the herd profile and numbers.

David farmed with his parents Maurice & Lyn Boyd after finishing school and college until 2016 when Maurie & Lyn semi-retired.

David and his wife Brooke and two children Jack and Maggie then

started a new farming venture with the Menzies family at Nowra, NSW, and now co-owns Riverlane Dairy with Stewart Menzies. The company incorporates both the Rivendell and Brunchilli Prefixes.

They have grown the Jersey herd to a peak of 800 cows.

“We’re always trying to improve the herd’s production and to achieve a good balance between production, type and temperament,” David said. “We’re pretty comfortable with how it’s going at the moment.”

David has no doubt that Jerseys are the best cows. “I love them because they’re the most profitable,” he said.

“They’re very efficient in how they convert feed to solids, their health and genetic traits are outstanding, they calve with ease and they’re great to work with.

“They’re get up and go cows. They bring themselves to the dairy to be milked, they’re always eating and they better tolerate high heat or extreme weather.

“I can’t find any fault with the Jerseys.”

David said there was great potential to grow the percentage of the breed in the Australian market and that farmers would benefit from adding more Jerseys to their herds or converting to the breed and registering and classifying their cows.

“For the commercial person, you can add value to your milk by having a high percentage of Jerseys in your herd,” he said.

“That’s what it’s all about – everyone wants to have a good price and higher value milk.”

MAKING THE MOST OF A SMALL FARM

That’swhere classifying their cows is coming in handy.

They are currently milking about 220 Jerseys but aim to reduce that to about 200. About 90 per cent of the herd are registered with Rodney starting the registration process for Renmagar Jerseys back in 2007.

Many were classified for the firsttime last spring. “We started classifying to give us an idea of where the herd is at,” Rodney said. “That worked in our benefit this year when we joined them and we will do the next batch this year,” he added.

Their highest classification is ranked EX92 and comes from the original Maquita family.

After a break from the industry due to the milk price crash, Rodney and Chloe started leasing his family’s

farm at Kirkstall in south-west Victoria in 2016 and one of their first goals was to make it a Jersey herd, gradually filtering out the Holsteins owned by his parents.

“We needed cow numbers to get back in so we bought anything we could find, no matter what colour it was, but we had a six-year plan to phase out the others and go with Jerseys,” Rodney said.

They bought 53 Jerseys from NSW last year and continue to filter Friesians and cross-breds out of the herd.

“Jerseys are easier to handle and feed and they’re happy to walk. Because we’re dryland farming with no irrigation and only milk off 298 acres, the ultimate goal is to do 200 and do them really well,” Chloe said.

They joined off ALLFLEX collars this year and say the heat detection and animal health benefits have been terrific, cutting the empty rate by more than half.

They also invested in sexed semen for the first time on cows. “We picked out cows to rear heifer calves from and put sexed semen in them, anything we didn’t want to rear a calf out of just got normal,” Rodney said.

After six weeks everything went to beef. “We don’t need to keep all the calves,” Rodney said. “We could see the cows we wanted to rear out of. We had the figures to select from.”

On their relatively small farm, Rodney and Chloe are strategic in all their actions, especially since a previous off-site agistment arrangement is no longer available.

RODNEY AND CHLOE BROWN LIKE THE IDEA OF WORKING A TRADITIONAL FAMILY FARM, BUT WHEN THE FARMING PLATFORM IS LESS THAN 120 HECTARES, THEY KNOW THEY HAVE TO BE PRECISE IN EVERYTHING THEY DO.

They now plan to be self-sufficient and keep all cows and heifers onsite. To make sure they are getting the best out of their land, they do soil tests on every paddock and develop individual feed blends for each calf. “It’s definitely viable as a family business on this amount of land,” Rodney said.

The success of the Jerseys can be seen in the milk quality awards on display at the dairy. “Since converting to virtually all Jerseys, our litres are not quite as high but our solids jumped dramatically which helps with payments,” Rodney said.

“Now that we have converted back to Jerseys, we just want to breed great cows and slowly make improvements to the herd.

‘MORE THAN MILK’

JERSEY FARMER CHLOE BROWN’S PODCAST MORE THAN MILK IS SPREADING GOOD NEWS ABOUT THE INDUSTRY. Although a first-generation farmer only in the business since 2010, Chloe has embraced dairying and is using her podcast to share positive stories and images.

“I want people to think positively about dairy and dispel myths about it,” she says.

Chloe and her husband Rodney run 220 mostly registered Jerseys at Kirkstall in south-west Victoria.

More than Milk has been delivering weekly episodes since the start of 2023, sharing stories from farmers and industry representatives from across Victoria and NSW.

Chloe aims to focus on the diversity in dairy people, jobs and farming practices.

The idea for the podcast came from Chloe’s invitation to speak about her journey and the Cream

of the Crop dairy conference for women – which she co-founded - at the NSW Women in Dairy Bale Up conference led to the podcast idea.

“I came home from that thinking why are we not telling these stories – we could do a podcast.” The title stems from Chloe’s desire to show the industry’s diversity. “There’s so much more to the industry than just milking cows,” Chloe said. “Whatever your passion is, you can do it in dairy.”

The podcast aims to show different pathways into the industry, different ways of farming and the different types of people with work in dairy.

The More than Milk podcast is available on Spotify, Apple and other streaming services.

NEW CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM TO IMPROVE CONSISTENCY

A NEW CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM WILL BE INTRODUCED IN AUTUMN 2024 AFTER FOUR-YEARS OF RESEARCH AND TRIALS, BRINGING AUTOMATION AND IMPROVED CONSISTENCY.

General manager Glen Barrett said the old system had been used for about 25 years and wasn’t compatible with the current database.

“It was out-of-date from a technology perspective so we’re investing in a more modern system and putting automation into the score calculations,” Glen said

Under the current system, all linear traits are scored and then the bottom line is assessed, referencing the linear traits, before a final score is determined.

The new system which will be rolled out early next year will have algorithms to automatically calculate the bottom line.

It will be moved into four trait groups – mammary system, feet and legs, rump and dairy strengthrather than the current bottom-line scores. Based on the linear score, it will use the algorithms and weightings to calculate the trait group score which will calculate the final score.

The weightings on the final score will be dairy strength 40 per cent, mammary 35 per cent rump 15 per cent, feet and Legs 10 per cent.

Glen says this will be more consistent. “We’ve already seen a lot of improvement in consistency from

linear through to bottom line and final scores, but this will certainly enhance the consistency of the score,” he said.

“It will also help us calculate more composite scores that will feed into breeding values with a wider range of composite traits.”

JA has been thorough in its research. “This has been a four-year plan,” Glen said. “We’ve taken time and thorough data analysis to get it to a level of comfort for the organisation and there has been extensive field testing with the classifiers.”

The data set used for the final reports has 18,000 classification records from the last three years.

The research started with former Chair of Genetics Lisa Broad and continued with the current Chair Wayne Kuhne.

“There has been a lot of work on historical class data and the new system is working towards the final score being from the linear rather than off the bottom line,” Wayne said.

“It gives a breakdown of the different sections of the cow. There are different traits down the side of the class form and different ideal scores for different ages.

“The classifier will break the animal down through linear and generate the final score.”

The change brings JA in line with most breeds around the world. “It’s a system used more commonly around the world than how we have traditionally done it and it’s a system breeders will be easily able to follow,” Wayne said.

“They can look at an animal and see what it scores- it will be more transparent for the breeder and it will also be easier to train new classifiers.”

Wayne added that details of the system, such as ideal scores, maybe be amended in the future if needed. Glen added that the system would significantly improve efficiencies in the office with the old system being difficult to use after JA moved to a new database a couple of years ago.

“It will be more efficient in the field and allow us to do things we currently can’t do. For example, if a cow is just on paper and not on the phone app on the palm, the classifier will still be able to score the cow on the palm and the data will transfer back to us and we will match it.”

Senior classifier Reece Attenborough says farmers will better relate to the new system.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “We’re going to have a system where once all the animal details and linear traits are entered, the system will generate a score across our four linear trait categories Mammary, Dairy Strength, Feet & Legs, Rump and most importantly reach the animal’s final score.

“There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to get the weightings of the linear traits right across animals of varying lactations to get the desired score at the end.

“As a classifier I had faith in the training I received and confidence in system we were using to get the right end score, but this system aligns us with a more standardised system

used both nationally within Australia and around the world, while all being formulated to how we want the Australian Jersey cow.”

Reece says having a score for each of the trait groups will make it easier for farmers to relate to the bottom line.

“I believe the new system will give a better overview and understanding for our farmers highlighting an animal’s strength and or weaknesses across the four linear trait groups.

“As a classification team I think the new system will only ensure our final scores are linear based, help with our consistency across the classification team and make training of future prospective classifiers a better process.”

Senior classifier Jamie Drury said the current App was outdated and starting to fail, but the new system would “assist farmers to breed the most efficient cow that they can”.

efficiently and accurately score cows.” Jamie said. “The only realistic alternative was to go back to a paper system but this makes far more financial sense.”

Jamie said the role of classifiers would remain important but would be helped by the automation.

“Classifiers will still be entering the linear scores but the new system will be automated to calculate the bottom line and final score through weightings we have placed on the individual traits.”

We’ve tested it rigorously over the past two years and been very thorough.”

Jamie said that buying an off-theshelf product would have cost more than and wouldn’t be as effective as what has been tailored for Jerseys.

“Through research and class data and experience, we can change weightings if we need to direct where the breed is heading or to help correct faults or trends that are starting that we see as a negative for the breed,” he said.

“We wanted to make sure we got the right system for the members. It’s not just about a final score, it’s about scoring linear correctly and getting that information to DataGene and getting bull proofs accurately calculated so farmers can use that with great confidence.”

What do you love about the Jersey breed and the Jersey world?

Katelyn I have always loved the Jersey breed for the kind nature of the cows and how placid they are.

Chelsea I love getting to meet plenty of people within the industry, along with spending time with the jersey cows because of their quiet nature.

Favourite All time cow

Katelyn My favourite cow would have to be my own which is from the Finch family. Finch was my very first cow dad gave to me when I was growing up and has always stuck with me. They are also the first to follow you around the paddock or always waiting for a cuddle/scratch or some extra food.

Chelsea Favourite cow in the herd would have to be Galahad Queen because she is just so placid, friendly and always comes up for a scratch.

My favourite cow family would have to be the Brownlady’s because they were my first ever jersey family that got me into the breed.

Best achievements in the dairy industry

Katelyn One of my best achievements in the dairy industry would have to be winning champion Parader at the Sydney Royal Easter show back in 2021.

2023 Great Northern Challenge Judge – WAYNE KUHNE

Jersey Australia is pleased to announce the judge of the 2023 Great Northern Challenge is Wayne Kuhne.

Wayne with Wife Lisa farm the Bushlea Stud at Koonwarra in Victoria and is an innaruagurl Master Breeder Recipient.

An experience and respected judge, Wayne has judged at the Royal Easter Show in Syndey, Brisbane Royal, Qld Dairy Showcase and the NSW State Show. Wayne has also judged on Farm Challenges in the Bega Valley, Riverina and Central Gippsland Clubs as well as the Waikato on farm challenge in New Zealand.

2023 Great Southern Challenge Judge – MIKE HUTH

Jersey Australia is pleased to announce the judge of the 2023 Great Southern Challenge is Mike Huth

Mike was born and raised on a dairy farm in Queensland, with registered Guernsey’s, Holsteins & Brown Swiss and has been involved with showing and breeding from a young age.

Mike has spent 25 years actively working in the AI industry, kicking off his first position with WWS Australia, before working in the USA for 4 years with CRI International - USA & Alta Genetics USA, before returning to Australia to work for CRV Australia and Genetics Australia, in Sales and Sire Acquisition roles. He has travelled dairy regions of USA, Holland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, and Philippines. Mike has previously judged On Farm Challenges across Qld, NSW, Tas, SA & Vic, in addition to judging Guernsey’s at Adelaide Royal.

Mike is currently works for Ridley Agri Products - Ruminant division servicing South West Victoria dairy farmers and is a current a Board Member for WestVic Dairy. Mike is married to Bec, and jointly have 6 children and 3 grandchildren.

I was incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to judge the Great Northern Challenge in 2022, a humbling experience I will never forget. The competition was well mapped out and highly organised. Great influence from the Jersey administration as well ST’s support made for a very seamless process. Along with that, Simon Tognola contributes massively, adding so much to the experience.

AUSTRALIAN GENETICS TO BOOM AFTER WORLD DAIRY EXPO

AUSTRALIAN JERSEY GENETICS ARE ON THE CUSP OF A DRAMATIC SALES BOOM AFTER A SUCCESSFUL TRADE MISSION TO THE WORLD’S LARGEST DAIRY EXPO.

Jersey Australia led a joint trade site at World Dairy Expo in Madison Wisconsin, USA, that also included Genetics Australia and AgriGene.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said the increase in product recognition after the 2022 was impressive.

“It was an extraordinarily positive outcome for what we are trying to achieve,” Mr Barrett said. “There was strong interest from farmers and resellers looking to stock products, which was really pleasing, and there were more people coming through

the site and much greater interest from people wanting to know more about Australian product.”

The interest came not just from North America but also from South

America, Africa, and Europe, and there was strong interest in heifers going into Sri Lanka and China.

“There is recognition of what the Australian Jersey offers,” Mr Barrett said.

“We see it as the best Jersey in the world and that is starting to resonate with other markets.

“People are impressed with the strength and efficiency of the Australian Jersey cow and her capacity to produce in all farming conditions.”

The site was presented to show the quality of Australian cows in the paddock and Mr Barrett said the delegation plans to return next year to build on the momentum.

“In my view, we’re right on the cusp of a dramatic sales increase,” he said.

The delegation also got to see Australian genetics in action in the US market, including Bontino and ASKN daughters in the Expo show, a Bontino daughter which came third

in her class and an ASKN embryo sell in the Top of the World Jersey Sale at the Expo, and an ASKN son is being sold in the USA and Canada.

Genetics Australia and AgriGene will follow up strong enquiries.

Agri-Gene general manager Chris McIlroy was pleased to see the daughters of one of Agri-Gene’s sires, Bontino, come third in her class.

“That was great to see and in the senior two-year-old in milk class, there were three Bontino daughters in the one class, which was the result of the first bull we sent over there,” Mr McIlroy said.

“It was really pleasing to see Australian-sired progeny competing in the ring and doing well and now we’re selling more on the back of Bontino’s success.”

Mr McIlroy said interest in Australian Jerseys continues to grow.

“The joint Jersey Australia booth is good because we can all push in the same direction to promote Australian Jerseys,” he said.

“There’s good global interest for Australian Jerseys at the moment.”

Genetics Australia export manager Rob Derksen said awareness of Australian product was very good in the US and international markets and the Expo site was helping to grow that reputation.

“I spoke to people from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ecuador and other countries as well as from the US and Canada and the interest in very high,” Mr Derksen said.

“There will definitely be more semen product going overseas.”

“Australian genetics have a good reputation and the Expo is the place to show that to the world.”

Mr Derksen also met with representatives from global herd improvement leader URUS Group LP, including the GENEX co-operative which joined Genetics Australia in a joint venture this year.

“We’re now following up opportunities in South Africa and South America,” he added.

EARLY ADOPTION PAYS OFF FOR SOUTH GIPPSLAND JERSEY HERD

WALK INTO THE HEIFER PADDOCK AT KYLIE REID’S FARM AND YOU ARE MET WITH A SEA OF EVEN, INQUISITIVE JERSEYS.

These replacement dairy heifers - minus the few ABS Beef InFocus™ animals - represent the next generation for Kylie, her husband Mark and their children Alannah 17, Campbell 16, and Lily 14. What you don’t see, or it’s not immediately obvious, is the improvement in genetic gain these animals represent.

When the Leongatha North dairy farmer shares her genomic test results, the numbers don’t lie. In one year, Kylie gained more than 20 index points across all three Australian breeding indices.

This means that the heifers born in 2022 were 28 points more on the Health Weighted Index (HWI), at about 137 HWI, than those born in 2021. The gain on the Balanced Performance Index (BPI) was 23 to about 144 BPI and 24 for the Sustainability Index (SI) - a measure of greenhouse gas emission intensity produced by animals - up to 297 SI.

The key to this rise in genetic merit is thanks to a focus on sexed genetics, artificial insemination and retaining only the best heifers - born in a tight group at the beginning of calving.

“We’ve been using sexed (genetics) on the heifers since 2014,” Kylie explained. “It made calving shorter; we’d start calving on June 22 and finish at the end of August. We’d keep all the heifers born up until July 31 and they were nice and close together. It made the heifers bigger when they were joined.” Breeding more heifers - faster - is one part of the genetic gain equation. The other includes using good bulls and retaining the AI-bred calves.

In recent years Kylie has used a lot of ABS Sexcel Forest Glen Craze TRIPP. In fact, she was so impressed with the proof of the outcross sire that she has 12 TRIPP heifers milking and another 31 to come in next year.

“With TRIPP he’s got good fat, milk, protein, fertility, good teat length and chest width,” Kylie said. “We breed for fertility and milk. There’s no point having a cow with no fertility and milk, they are production animals, you want them to produce. If they look pretty, that’s a bonus.”

TRIPP now has more than 30 daughters milking in Australian herds and has rocketed up the Australian Breeding Value (ABV) charts to 390 BPI.

Twelve of those daughters are twoyear-olds milking in Mark and Kylie’s herd of 278 Jerseys - calving seasonally - in South Gippsland. Their best TRIPP heifer has a PI of 117 and the 12 average 103 PI.

The Reid’s herd, share farmed with Kylie’s parents, Nick and Leonie Murphy, produced a total 138,153 kilograms of milk solids last season.

Sires of the calves on-the-ground bred from the TRIPP heifers include ABS 4465 LAWSON - a genomic sire at 297 BPI - and ABS MARINE at 282 BPI.

Since beginning to share farm 10 years ago, Kylie has worked hard to make the most of the “top” genetics her parents built up by collecting and using more herd data. As part of this quest, Kylie began genomic testing heifers and is into her third season of using information from these DNA tests. She said data ensures all the hard work of breeding - using good bulls - isn’t wasted and that information can then be used to make future decisions.

ABS Gippsland Key Account Manager Brian Enbom said Kylie’s work is paying dividends. “Kylie and Mark were using sexed genetics a long time before many Jersey herds embraced the technology,” he said. “This, and their focus on using good sires, coupled with excellent record keeping, is delivering gains on the ground, where it matters. I’ve been working with Kylie, Mark, Nick, and Leonie for a long time now and it’s exciting to see where the next generation is taking the farm business.”

Spring Heifer Tour

On Monday 9th October we held our spring heifer tour on a beautiful spring day with a large crowd in attendance.

Our first visit was to Ben and Tess Elliott of Benelli Jerseys where we were treated to a consistent, large group of heifers sired by Whistler, Bashful, Matt, Chrome, Casino and Askn. One Whistler daughter in particular attracted a lot of attention and favourable comments.

Our second visit to Damien Elliott and Irene Baker of Scarlisha Jerseys we saw some very well grown heifers with

plenty of potential sired by Jet Fighter, Bashful, Demos and Skyman.

Our final visit was to Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day of Araluen Park Jerseys with an outstanding uddered group of heifers sired by Jeronimo, Starlord, Jiggy, Vicks, Magnesium, Detective, Valentino and Animate.

Thank you to our 3 farms for their time and effort, all who attending, Dave Anderson for organising the day and finally to World Wide Sires who supplied lunch for all along with Araluen Park Jerseys.

Jayden Complete Dispersal Tops $35,000

A large crowd of Jersey Breeders from throughout Australia were at Tamworth, NSW for the Complete Dispersal Sale of the Jayden Jerseys of Jamie and Michelle Drury and Family.

High production and high classification was featured right through the catalogue. Sale top of $35,000 was paid for Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 16 (pictured above), this 9 year old had classified EX 95 earlier in the year, she had won Intermediate Champion at IDW in 2018 and had records to 9637 litres 401 kgs protein 457 kgs fat along with a gBPI +391. She was purchased by Cherrylock Cattle Co, Tallygaroopna, Vic. This is the second highest price paid for a Jersey in Australia. Her twin 3 month old Casino heifers both sold for $6,000 each to B & J Dickson, Emu Banks Jerseys, Vic.

Second top of $17,000 was the milking 2 year old, Jayden Casino Daisy 10, 87 @2yo, she sold to local Breeders K & M Atkins. Third high of $16,000 was the smart young cow Cairnbrae Casino Estelle 12, VG 88, a maternal sister to noted sire Bontino, she sold to A & C Coombes. These buyers also selected Cairnbrae Dimension Estelle 2, EX 92 at $15,000 and Jayden Casino Gert 3 on her 1st lact at $13,000.

Kaarmona Jerseys selected Cairnbrae Casino Daisy 11, a 7th gen EX 4 year old at $15,000.

The high performance Araluen Park Jersey herd of Saunders & Day paid $14,000 for the 2nd EX 95 cow to sell on the day, Jayden Valentino Junette with records to 9752 litres 369 kgs protein 480 kgs fat. The same buyers also bought the tremendous 5 year old Ingalala Valentino Girlie, EX 91 again at $14,000.

R & A Wilson of Jamber Jerseys paid top price unjoined heifer, $14,000 for Jayden Izuku Estelle a daughter of the Casino Estelle 12 cow.

Bill Cochrane and Family of Bamawn selected the outstanding EX 92 cow Cairnbrae Lems Lovelies. Wanstead

Jerseys paid $11,000 for Jayden Casino Estelle 4 a 1st lact cow backed by 5 gens EX.

Brookbora Jerseys selected some 20 lots throughout the sale including Jayden Casino Junette, EX 90 a daughter of the EX 95 Valentino Junette at $10,000.

Cairnbrae Final Sale Tops $20,000 Twice

Held on property near Torquay the 76 year old Cairnbrae Jersey Stud of Alan and Janine Carson held their final Dispersal Sale of Spring calving heifers.

Sale top of $20,000 was reached twice when Cairnbrae Casino Daisy 34 with a gBPI of +285 sold to Emu Banks Jerseys, B & J Dickson of Terang. This full sister to the # 2 gBPI sire Cairnbrae Roulette is from the 2019 IDW Grand Champion Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 11, EX 94.

The same buyers also selected Cairnbrae Matts Estelle 11 a daughter of Casino Estelle 12, VG 88 a maternal sister to the noted sire Bontino at $15,500 and Cairnbrae Matts Daisy 9, a daughter of the 7th gen EX Cairnbrae Casino Daisy 11 at $9,000.

Also at $20,000 was Cairnbrae Bontino Althea 3 a heifer of outstanding type, this daughter of Citation Althea, EX 91 the Intermediate Best Udder winner at IDW 2022 sold to L & A Bennett, Benlee Park Jerseys of Macorna.

Second top seller at $16,000 was Cairnbrae Candyman Daisy 5 a daughter of Valentino Daisy 16, EX 95 a former Intermediate Champion at IDW who had recently sold for $35,000, this top heifer sold to A & S Chant of Nalingil. Salter & Griffiths of Barringa Jerseys, Kerang paid $10,000 for Cairnbrae Casino Daisy 33 a maternal sister to Daisy 16, EX 95.

Western Australian breeders Katandra Farming, Fry Family paid $9,000 each for Cairnbrae Casino Daisy 29 a daughter of the 2023 Gippsland Fair Champion Victorious Daisy 2, EX 91 and Cairnbrae Casino Estelle 30 a daughter of Dimension Estelle 2, EX 92.

Also at $9,000 was Cairnbrae Casino Daisy 26 selling to Launder Farms of Tarwin and Cairnbrae Casino Estelle 32 backed by 7 gens of EX dams, she sold to G & L Bryce of Nullawarre.

A feature of the sale was that 72% of the animals sold to return Cairnbrae buyers.

Long Lanes Jerseys Top $9,000 In North Queensland

Far North Queensland, Atherton Tablelands Jersey Breeders Rodney and Cynthia Hartin, Millaa Millaa dispersed their Dairy Herd and heifers after the family had dairy farmed for some 92 years.

Sale top was the outstanding first calf heifer, Long Lanes Bontino Brown Lady recently classified 87 points, she was purchased by keen young Breed enthusiasts Jerry English of Malanda at $9,000.

Greg and Bronwyn English and Family were strong buyers of top lots throughout the day, their selections included Long Lanes Ferdinand Narcissus the smart unjoined daughter of the recently crowned Malanda Supreme All Breeds Champion, bred down from the famed Belgonia Narcissus family at $6,000. They also selected Long Lanes Matt Donaria, a joined heifer from an EX 91 dam at $3,800 and Long Lanes Targa Rosemary, a Spring calving heifer from an EX 90 dam.

D & K Davis selected Long Lanes Bontino Silvermine a correct unjoined heifer backed by the Lara/Katandra Silvermines at $4,100.

Major buyer through the day was C O’Brien of Butchers Creek, included in the selections was Long Lanes Bontino Lady from an EX 92 dam at $4,000 and Long Lanes Valentino Fernleaf at $3,800.

Warrain Jerseys Top $9,500 At Third Stage Dispersal Sale

The high production, high genomic Warrain herd of John and Margaret Cockerell staged a very successful third stage dispersal sale offering all their Spring calving heifers

that presented in absolutely wonderful form and were of outstanding type.

Sale top of $9,500 was lot 1, Warrain Matt Althea (pictured above), a superb type daughter of Valentino Althea 2, EX, she sold to Mt Pleasant Jerseys of Allansford.

Next top price of $7,500 was paid by John Brian, Babrooten Farms, Tongala for Warrain Casino Lovelies 3 a daughter of Tbone Lovelies 15, Ex with the next dam on EX 93 and over 11,000 litres.

Third high of $7,000 was Warrain Chrome Roma 10 who has a gBPI of +273, she sold to S & C Coombes of NSW who also selected Warrain Matt Lovelies 3 backed by 3 EX dams at $6,000.

A & C Harrison of Nerrena purchased Warrain Askn Love Kiss backed by many generations of high milk solids at $6,500. R & A Wilson of NSW paid $6,000 for Warrain Casino Lovelies 5 a daughter of Lovelies 22, EX 92 who already resides at the Wilsons.

G & L Bryce of Green Pines Jerseys selected the huge production backed Warrain Matt Princess at $6,000 and Emu Banks Jerseys paid the same price for Warrain Matt Dream with a gBPI of +242.

A group of mostly NSW Breeders combined to stage the Online Auction of young cows, heifers, embryos & semen representing Jerseys, Holsteins and one Illawarra and one Swiss. Auctioned from the DLS Office via the Elite Livestock Auctions platform to more than 360 viewers. Sale top of $11,000 was paid for Diamond Hill HV Dark Chocolate, this 12-month-old Askn heifer is from a VG 88

VIP daughter of the famous Canadian cow Avonlea Premier Chocolate Chip, EX 96, she sold a/c Mangold & Hayes to R & A Wilson of Jamber Jerseys. Next top of $7,800 was the 2023 Sydney Royal Supreme Junior Champion Cedar Vale Oliver Countess-P, she sold bred to Stark-PP a/c S & W Oslear to A Rosolin of Glenfyne, Vic.

P Buckley of Camden selected Jamber Colton HG Lady, EX 91, a super milky young cow at $7,500 from R & A Wilson. The same buyer also paid $5,500 for Diamond Hill VV Pix, a Viral from a VG Valentino sister to noted AI Sire Pixstar a/c M Mangold.

Other noted sales in the Jersey section included Hazel Vale Ferdilicious, a Ferdinand bred to Victorious from 3 gens EX dams back to Gorgeous, EX 97, she sold a/c J Hayes to Ashtaney Jerseys, SA at $5,600. Also at $5,600 was Cedar Vale Choc Chip Maybell, a classy 8-month heifer to Todd Brown of Vic.

Jersey Australia is exploring new ways to support members to easily register their animals and we would like to invite you to be involved in our new “Registration Assist Program”.

The program is available to all Jersey Australia members who herd test or genomic test calves at an early age and maintain a high-quality data record for all animals from early age and use a corresponding within herd id and tattoo number.

Jersey Australia can access your pedigree data and information from DataVat every 2-3 months and register the animals for you. All animals will be registered with each member typical naming convention and any new progeny identified with the same dam will be considered ET and referred to members for conformation or correction.
