elcome 2021 and I am sure I speak for most when I say I am glad we have put a full stop on 2020. I hope you have all enjoyed a great Christmas and new year and had the opportunities to put your feet up for a few days and enjoy a

2021 is starting to shape up as a busy and exciting year for the Association. Jersey Australia will kick off with two new projects in classification and genomics. See opposite page for more details. Our AGM will head to Warragul and be hosted by the Central Gippsland Club. The Dairy Finest Sale will be held at the AGM. This is a new and exciting initiative which we hope will become an annual feature of the AGM and Conference. Planning for the 2022 World Conference will start, and we are certainly looking forward to hosting our global jersey friends in Australia. I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Hayley Menzies and Daniel Bacon to the Promotions Sub-Committee and Lachlan Fry, Darien Matthews and Reece Attenborough to the Genetics Sub-Committee. The reformation of the Sub-Committees and including non-Board appointments are significant achievement for the Association and we look forward to a wider input into the Association direction and policy development. As we also return to the office in 2021, I would like to make special mention and send a big thank you to the JA office staff. Lucy, Rosie, Jenny and Doris have spent the majority of the 2020 working from home and have worked diligently and adaptively to ensure JA can deliver our member services. Working from home has certainly been in many ways an invasion of personal privacy and resources and your willingness and commitment has been much appreciated. Kind Regards Glen Barrett GENERAL MANAGER Jersey Australia

2021 All-Australian Photo Competition New Projects commencing in 2021 Jersey Australia has 2 new projects commencing in 2021 to support Association objectives and will involve the collection of classification and genomic data.

Classification Longevity Project The Classification Longevity Project will classify 500 cows across 10 herds each year from their 1st to 4th lactation. This will be highly valuable project which has been never been done before in Australia and will allow JA to • Monitor each cow’s linear change from lactation to lactation as the cow matures • Supports a review of ideals to ensure the current ideals are fit for purpose • Supports the Association development of a a future automated linear driven scoring system. Herds will be invited to participate and will initially focus on member herds involved in the Ginfo project.

The 2020 All Australian Photo Competition was a great addition to the Jersey Australia events calendar and will be back again in 2021 albeit with some qualification changes. COVID-19 has seen most of the shows cancelled through the year and to account for this, JA will throw open the entry requirements to any animals who has been or will be professionally photographed between March 1st 2020 and February 28th, 2021. Heifers / cows will be entered into the respective classes based on their age at the date of the photo being taken. Entries will open in March 2021.

Genomic Testing Project In 2021 we will also launch a new Genomic Testing Project that will target cows who have previously not been genomic tested • Classify 93 point or greater • The 1st 20 cows in the top cow list at each ABV run not previously (g)tested The project aims to • Support Jersey Australia objectives to increase genomic testing in the Jersey Breed • Aims to ensure all cows in top industry lists have an equalised data standard • Supports data collection to provide a highly valuable data bank on type cows. • Enables contact between Jersey Australia and non-members with cows in the top ABV lists and supports future members opportunities. These are 2 small but exciting projects to kick start 2021. Contact Glen on 0418 466 371 if you have any questions on these projects.

Dairy’s Finest Sale To Highlight Conference A

virtual sale of Dairy’s Finest and visits to some of the best jersey herds in the Central Gippsland area will highlight a return to an in-person annual conference in 2021.

also sell animals, with many sales doing so successfully this year.”

than the past few years so we believe it could be one helluva sale.”

After the 2020 annual meeting was moved online due to COVID-19, Jersey Australia members are looking forward to meeting in person in 2021.

The sale committee and vendors will extensively market each individual lot online in the lead up to the sale.

Reece is also predicting strong interest in the AGM and four-day conference.

All attending the Jersey Australia 2021 AGM will still get to witness the excitement of a live auction and internet bidding will be in place for anyone who is unable to attend.

“The AGM is one of the first things to happen after COVID. With no Dairy Week, this is going to be one of the first events for over a year where a large group of Jersey breeders can come together for a great few days of fun and to share our passion for the jersey cow.”

The conference will be held in Warragul on May 25-28 and will start with the inaugural Dairy’s Finest Showcase Sale at Kingsville Jerseys. While previous conferences have included a sale, most recently in 2018 hosted by the Goulburn Murray club, this sale will adopt a new format that can be replicated every year. The conference is being organised by the Central Gippsland Club and president Reece Attenborough said the sale would be a big drawcard.

The big difference will be that all sale lots will remain on their vendor properties until sold at the sale. “We believe this format reduces the traditional costs for vendors and removes the need to prepare and transport animals to the sale,” Reece said. Dairy’s Finest Showcase Sale will feature about 25 of the very best the Australian Jersey breed has to offer.

“Our club thought a sale was a musthave event and after speaking with general manager Glen Barrett we came up with the idea of a virtual sale,” Reece said.

Three days prior to the live auction, values and starting bids will be added to each lot and people can bid online prior to the sale. Reece predicted a top sale.

“Over a long period of time there has been a lot of work put into preparation and presenting of the cattle being clipped and led in front of potential buyers at a live animal auction.

“We have a lot of studs committed and every lot confirmed so far is top class. It has great potential and we believe it’s going to be one of the best catalogues put together.”

We believe if 2020 has taught us anything, it is that the internet is a very successful tool to not only market but

“Considering the milk price and weather forecasts around the country, things have been a lot more favourable

The AGM will include herd visits to the Wallacedale, Kings Ville and Araluen park studs and more, as well as visits to some of the area’s local attractions. The conference will finish on Friday at the Mercure Warragul with the Jersey Australia Annual General Meeting. The new virtual sale concept has the tick of approval from Glen Barrett who believes it could become a regular part of the AGM and conference. “We’ve tried to create something that can continue year on year and we’re sure it will attract a lot of interest,” he said. Glen said he was confident the conference and AGM could go ahead in 2021 after the cancellation of this year’s in-person event. “We have contingency plans to go online like this year but at this stage it’s looking positive.”

Genetics Committee Expands J

ersey Australia has a new-look and expanded Genetics Committee. Reece Attenborough, Darien Mathews and Lachlan Fry have been appointed as general sub-committee members, joining Brian Wilson, Jamie Drury and Alan Carson and chair Lisa Broad. Lisa said the committee would provide a better stream of information to the Board.

“The projects can be discussed, researched and developed through the sub-committee and presented to the Board as a recommendation rather than the Board having to do the research,” she said. The sub-committee was started at the annual meeting in May but its formation has been delayed due to COVID restrictions. Its first full Zoom meeting with the new members was The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2021 // 6

being held on December 11. In the interim, Lisa said the existing members had been doing some strategic planning and prioritising topics. “We have been working on the bull proofs, including a few new genetic impurities in the Jersey breed that we need to focus on, and improving the classification system is always on our agenda.

| NEWS | “Lisa said the new larger subcommittee would strengthen Jersey Australia’s genetics response. “It exposes us to three different viewpoints from members and adds to the resources,” she said. “Their ideas will be valued and it is a really good opportunity for the new sub-committee members as a learning opportunity if they want to become Board members in the future.” “COVID has been challenging. We would have loved to have face-to-face meetings but that hasn’t been possible but we believe the new committee will be particularly helpful.”

The New Members

REECE ATTENBOROUGH Reece Attenborough may be one of the younger members of the genetics committee, but he has plenty of committee experience and enthusiasm to spare. Reece, 35, is based on at Poowong North in Victoria on a family farm, managing the property with his wife Toni for his parents Ted and Annie. His passion for breeding and genetics can be traced back about 20 years when he started his Attaview Jersey stud. The farm also has Holsteins but Reece admits his passion for breeding rests with the Jerseys. “We didn’t have registered animals until I started – breeding and genetics are my passion and are the reasons why I farm,” he said. “Having a cow and crossing her to continually improve generation on generation, that’s where my passion is.” Jerseys constitute about 25 per cent of the herd and are gradually increasing their percentage. Reece has been a classifier for about eight years and having been involved within committees since he was 18, mixed with his passion for the breed, will allow him to make a contribution to the committee, which he’s also looking at as a learning experience to continue to personally learn and grow. “Being new to it, I don’t go in wanting to change this or that. I have been on various committees since I was 18 so whilst I might be one of the younger members of the committee, I still feel I

have plenty of experience and most importantly the passion for the breed to be part of the sub-committee team to move the breed forward." Reece comes from a family tradition of volunteerism. “Our family has always been involved with committees and volunteering and we’re prepared to get our hands dirty to get things done,” he said. DARIEN MATHEWS As a primary school-aged child, Darien became interested in genetics and he’s never lost that passion. “When I was a kid, I was always interested in the genetics side of it and loved reading through the bull catalogues,” he said. “I’ve carried that interest all the way through.” Darien farms at Dumbalk in south Gippsland on a leased property with wife Alexandra. His 520-strong herd is 75 per cent Jersey along with some Holsteins and cross-breds. Darien wasn’t thinking about joining the genetics committee, but when asked by Chair Lisa Broad he was quick to jump at the opportunity. “I’ve been farming for a while and running a business for 14 years so it’s an opportunity to be involved and help with the direction of the breed and to keep it relevant and progressing forward,” he said. While not bringing any specific goals to the table, Darien hopes to be part of the general progression of the breed and to focus on the traits that make Jerseys a success. “It’s the things that make Jerseys Jerseys,” he said. “They are smaller but their conversion and efficiency of milk solids per kilogram to liveweight is top notch and we want to make sure we don’t lose fertility. “We want to keep them as a fertile, healthy breed for commercial and stud farmers and to make sure they suit any system.” Darien has been involved in the local Jersey club and hopes to reflect the views of other farmers as well as his own perceptions. “I’m in the dairy and see what works and what doesn’t and know what we want to achieve long term. We’re out on pasture and want to make sure we keep that extra capacity in our cows.”

The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2021 // 8

LACHLAN FRY At 29, Lachlan is the youngest of the new committee members and believes a shot of youthful ideas will supplement those of the more experienced members. Lachlan farms at Brunswick Junction about 160km south of Perth, milking 140 cows under the Katandra Park prefix. The registered herd is currently a 50-50 spilt of Jerseys and Holsteins. Lachlan’s parents, Don and Lorelle, first ventured into the Jersey breed in 1994 with the purchase of a heifer from South Australia, and from there, jerseys have continued to play a significant role in their dairy business. “For a long as I can remember, cows and breeding have been my ultimate passion,” Lachlan said. Over the years, Lachlan’s passion has provided him with many different opportunities and experiences throughout Australia and overseas, including judging appointments, mentoring youth and breed society committee involvement both locally and nationally. Lachlan believes the breed’s opportunities moving forward are unlimited. “The genetic progress of the Jersey cow in Australia over the last 10-20 years has been quite remarkable,” he said. “Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see Jerseys dominating interbreed competitions or pushing a 10,000L 305day lactation. The modern Jersey cow has clearly shown it can compete with the best of the other breeds. “I think it’s quite an exciting time in be in the game. Currently the information, data and tools available to farmers and breeders is quite remarkable.” Lachlan hopes to be able to contribute to what is already a strong committee. “I think it’s really positive that Jersey Australia is investing in younger people and from different farming areas in Australia to be a part of these committee roles,” he said. “As farmers running our own operations or with young families, time is precious, so to be involved on a subcommittee level still allows us to bring new ideas and perspectives to the table for the board to consider”.

BPI System Changes A Good First Step J

ersey Australia has welcomed slight changes to Australia’s BPI system and hopes they will be the first step in recognising differences between the breeds. General manager Glen Barrett said it was pleasing that DataGene had recognised a need to look beyond a standardised index and that breed differences are important. There have been some minor changes in how the latest ABV figures are presented and Mr Barrett said this would help to overcome unfair misconceptions against Jersey breeders. “It’s good that there is some variation; we see this as the first positive step,” Mr Barrett said. Jersey Australia president Chris MacKenzie said members and Jersey breeders across the country shouldn’t compare proofs across breeds. “As more data and information become available, it is becoming clearer and clearer that a standardised BPI is not doing the right thing across breeds,” Mr MacKenzie said. “There is no evidence that the top Holstein bull of 450 is more profitable than the top Jersey bull at 299.”

Mr MacKenzie said fertility was a prime example of why proofs can’t be compared across breeds. “A below average Jersey bull with an ABV of 95 has the same 6-week-in-calf rate as an above average Holstein bull with an ABV of 110. This is a BPI advantage of $100 - $110. The real fertility value of Jersey bulls is not being presented in the BPIs.” Changes to BPI from the 2020 National Breeding Objective are starting to address these concerns. Jersey Australia has called for change in the expression of the fertility ABV to the 6-week-in-calf rate. It also wants more focus on sustainable traits like heat tolerance and feed efficiency, where the Jersey cow has a significant natural advantage. “It is becoming more and more important to see breed variations appropriately accounted for,” Mr MacKenzie said. “We’re probably the only country in the world that has a standardised national index through the breeds and a number of changes have devalued Jerseys, leading to a big misconception in the market place that Holsteins are more profitable than Jerseys.

“Farmers say the Holstein figure is better than Jerseys without understanding you can’t compare breed against breed. “We need to do more as an industry to recognise the differences between breeds and appropriately value Jerseys.” Jersey Australia’s genetics subcommittee chair Lisa Broad said people couldn’t fairly compare breeds by using current figures. “It’s in our nature to compare numbers but we haven’t been educated not to compare between the breeds,” Ms Broad said. “We need to look at the figures for each breed and not compare to the next breed. There’s too much cross comparing and that’s why Jerseys are getting a massive hit on the overall BPI number. “If we had an education process on how the numbers are delivered, that would be a light bulb moment for a lot of people. “We will continue to work with DataGene to get better results for each breed and to better educate people about the figures.”

Jerseys Stand Out In New-Look BPI System J

ersey cows have stood out in this week’s new-look BPI system, which Jersey Australia hopes will be the first step towards greater recognition of different breed objectives in the national index.

numbers do not mean they are more profitable than Jerseys.

The top three were also 1-3 on the Health Weighted Index list.

Jersey Australia (JA) general manager Glen Barrett said the BPI from the 2020 National Breeding Objective included a critical update by DataGene where for the first time the BPI has different inputs that reflect different breed objectives.

“Jerseys are mid-size, heat-tolerant, feed-efficient, fertile cows that are the most profitable for farmers and best for environmental sustainability.” The top Jersey herd was White Star Jerseys owned by Con and Michelle Glennen at Noorat in Victoria with a BPI of 170.

The top young heifer born 2019-20 was 3613 with a BPI of 368 sired by INVINCIBLE and owned by DC and EJ Glasgow of Bena in south Gippsland. The Glasgow family are long term JA members but typically have not registered cattle. However, regular classifier visits for LTEs to the farm have always had positive reports on the quality of the Glasgow family Jerseys. With 17 heifers born in 2020 with an average 257 BPI in the Glasgow herd, this heifer is in quality company.

“JA congratulates DataGene and the industry for recognising and responding to our calls to adjust the National Index to reflect breed differences,” Mr Barrett said. “This small change is a critical first step towards greater recognition of different breed objectives to the national index.” Mr Barrett said breeders would see vastly different BPI figures with top bulls up to 382 BPI points and (g) cows/ heifers topping 435 and top herds up to 170BPI. However, Mr Barrett added that Jersey BPI figures shouldn’t be compared to Holsteins. “These figures are in no way comparable to Holstein,” he said. “The higher Holstein BPI

Second herd was Rob and Sandra Bacon’s Brookbora Jerseys at Tennison in northern Victoria with a BPI or 168 and third was the McGrath Family’s Wootanga Park Jerseys at Orford in south-west Victoria with a BPI 164 The McGrath family recently purchased BERCAR herd of Bernie and Carol McManus which was a top five herd for many years.

KINGS VILLE HAHA BELLE 155 365 and KINGS VILLE BELLA 66 361 both sired by MATT and owned by Rob and Kerry Anderson from Drouin in Gippsland, were the second and third heifers.

| ADVERTORIAL | WORDS // ANGELA HARDERS, WHS MANAGER AT SAFE AG SYSTEMS.

Do I Really Need A Safety System? Y

ou’re a husband and wife team working on farm and you’re happy to take risks because you know what you’re doing. You don’t employ anyone. So why bother with a safety system? It seems like a lot of extra work when nothing’s ever gone wrong. This probably sounds familiar to a few people, so let’s take a few minutes to explain why a business really should have a safety management system. Let’s start with a bit of Safety-101 and talk about the law. Victoria’s legislation is Occupational Health and Safety, and the rest of Australia is now Work Health and Safety. It’s basically the same thing, so don’t get too concerned about the name difference. I will refer to WHS throughout this article so read this to include OHS as well.

In all WHS legislation, the main objective is to protect workers and others from harm to their health and safety, by eliminating or managing risks arising from work or the workplace.

individually responsible and potentially liable if something goes wrong.

For many people, your farm is also your home and it’s hard to separate the two. Being safe both at home and at work matters, especially if they are the same place.

This means not only you, but also anyone else who comes on farm, must be kept safe. Other people could be the tanker driver collecting the milk, the local vet coming out to look at your herd, a local stock agent dropping in, or a family member or neighbour visiting who decides to give you a hand with something.

In WHS, a business is known as a Person Conducting Business or Undertaking (PCBU), which is a legal entity as defined in the Corporations Act. It is not necessarily a natural person. It includes companies and also partnerships, with each partner within a partnership being a PCBU in their own right. This means all partners are

The PCBU is legally responsible for the health and safety of workers and other people who can be affected by its activities.

Contractors and visitors don’t work in your business so may not be aware of how things are done at your place. If something does go wrong, and someone is actually hurt or killed, or

even just put at risk of death or serious injury, there’s a good chance the Regulator will be at your farm gate to investigate. After visiting the scene of the incident, one of the first things investigators will be after is documentation. They will want to see how you have identified and mitigated foreseeable risks on your property. Without a documented safety management system, you are leaving yourself and your business vulnerable. Penalties range from notices requiring you to improve something, through to significant fines and even jail time for the most serious of incidents. WHS is criminal law so a successful prosecution will leave you with a criminal record. As a PCBU, the business needs to do everything ‘reasonably practicable’ to ensure the health and safety of any person on your farm. In its simplest form, this means protecting people on-farm by eliminating or managing hazards and risks. Again, a documented safety management system will help you demonstrate this to a regulator, or even your insurer who may offer a discount if you’ve got this in place and working effectively. Make sure you ask your insurer about this! There are lots of risks on a dairy farm, with Safework Australia’s Agriculture: Priority Industry Snapshot showing vehicle incidents the cause of 42% of fatalities and 10% of serious injuries. Speaking of serious injuries, in dairy cattle farming being hit by an animal caused 22% and falls on the same level resulted in 10% of injuries. We know working with livestock is risky – cattle are big and sometimes unpredictable beasts especially after calving, and can cause significant harm. We also use machinery which can easily kill or maim.

practicable’ to protect people from harm? Sadly, it’s fact that dairy farmers do get hurt, and some are killed each and every year. It’s easy to think ‘that won’t happen to me’, but I bet that’s exactly what those killed or injured thought too. You’ve probably heard about workplace or industrial manslaughter being law in some states. Not having a safety system could even leave you open to prosecution under these laws if someone is killed and it’s found to be due to negligence. What standard of care would you expect to protect your spouse or your own child? Did you know Safe Ag Systems makes gathering and storing information quicker and easier? Using a software-based system removes the time required to maintain a paper system with information accessible at the click of a button, whether you are utilizing the app or the desktop software.

Regular audits of your workplace and safety processes will help safeguard workers and others on your farm from becoming a statistic. A safety system can help you as it is evidence of what’s happening (or not happening) in your workplace. The Inspection checklists available in Safe Ag Systems guides you to conduct selfaudits and identify, at a glance, where things could be improved. You can also see what you’re doing well. Investing time and money in developing and implementing a safety management system is good business practice and makes sense when you look at the return on investment. Saving time, money and lives is a win in anyone’s books. Join Safe Ag Systems in conjunction with Jersey Australia and Fonterra next year as we tackle topics around safety in the dairy industry. Stay tuned for more information. If you would like to access more information about safety management, please visit the Safe Ag Systems’ website www.safeagsystems.com or contact 08 8490 0939.

94 Point Cow

JA congratulates Jamie and Michelle Drury on achieving a 94-point cow in the spring class tour with JAYDEN VALENTINO JUNETTE. This superstar cow from Tamworth was one of the first Jersey cows bred by Jamie and Michelle when they change to the Jersey breed from INGALALA HARVEST JUNETTE EX90 purchased from the Johnston Brothers at Taree with the pedigree going back to SHIRLINN PALS JUNETTE who also classified 94. JUNETTE has continuously improved as she has matured with the 94 point classification being her fourth time in front of the classifier follows scores of 87 as a 2-year-old, 91 and 93 with her 2-year-old CASINO daughter classifying 87 on the same day also showing her capacity as a brood cow. WHY JERSEY? In a series of articles produced by Jersey Australia as part of a Jersey feature for publication in the January edition of The Australian Dairy Farmer, farmers from around Australia were asked Why Jersey? Their answers confirm that Jerseys are the best and most profitable breed for all conditions and all farming systems.

F

armers say it and the statistics confirm it; when it comes to the most profitable cow that meets environmental and social requirements, the Jersey ticks all boxes. The Jersey is a mid-size, heat-tolerant, feed-efficient, fertile cow who drives onfarm profitability and sustainability. Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett says Jerseys have consumer power on their side, along with all-important profitability. “Consumers want environmentally-safe food production and Jerseys deliver that, but they have to be profitable for farmers and they also deliver that,” Mr Barrett said. A scientific peer-reviewed life cycle assessment published in the Journal of

Dairy Science in the US found that to produce the same amount of protein, milk fat and other solids, the Jersey population needs 32 per cent less water, 11 per cent less land, produces less waste, uses substantially less fossil fuels and had a 20 per cent reduction in total carbon footprint. In terms of the amount of milk needed to produce 500,000 metric tonnes of cheese, the Jersey’s reduction in carbon footprint is equal to taking 433,900 cars off the road annually. Jerseys consume about 80 per cent less feed that Holsteins and have a 20 per cent better milk solids to liveweight ratio. “The Jersey cow is certainly the best cow of all the major breeds to meet social and

environmental needs and she is a significantly more profitable cow,” Mr Barrett said. Over the past 15 years Jerseys have increased from 11 to 15 per cent of the national herd and Mr Barrett predicts that growth will continue. “Those who are milking the cows and paying the bills are telling us the Jerseys are more profitable and handle the heat far better than other breeds. When you talk to farmers who are milking mixed breed herds, Jersey nearly always comes out on top,” he said. Their ability to cope with hot weather is improving the Jersey’s status locally and around the world. “Farmers are seeing their Jersey cows grazing when other breeds are seeking shade,” Mr Barrett said. “We’ve noticed in China that demand for Jersey is increasing because heat is one of the issues.” Jersey Australia hopes to commission a study in 2021 to confirm Australian anecdotal evidence that Jerseys are the most profitable and environmentally-friendly cow. Jersey Australia president Chris MacKenzie says the cows’ efficiencies will help to increase its market share. “The dairy industry is going to be facing more issues in the area of sustainability and the Jersey cow is already here to deliver those efficiencies, it doesn’t have to be created by scientists,” Mr MacKenzie said. “When looked after and fed properly, the Jersey cow will always provide good quantities of milk and the high components that make her more efficient. Whatever you feed to her; the Jersey cow will give you a return.” Mr MacKenzie said more farmers were reviewing how much it costs to produce milk solids and looking for efficiencies. “It’s evident driving past farms that there are more Jersey cows in herds and at the same time there is growing demand from consumers for Jersey milk,” he said. “It’s a challenging time but the Jersey is the cow for it.” The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2021 // 24

NEW SOUTH WALES

GRAEME COCHRANE grew up a Holstein man but he’s now a happy Jersey convert. Graeme and his wife Lisa (pictured left) farm in Kangaroo Valley between the southern highlands and the south coast of NSW and wishes he had changed earlier to Jerseys. “I’ve seen the benefits of the breed and what they bring to the table.” Influenced by Lisa, the swap started about 10 years ago and the herd is now 8090 per cent Jersey. “If you’re going to be putting cups on cows, you may as well put them on cows that are going to be returning you the most and the Jerseys certainly do that in regards of their fat and protein percentage and their ability to get in and get the job done,” Graeme said.

Graeme and Lisa Cochrane see Jerseys as the way forward for the dairy industry.

“They don’t do 40-hour weeks and have a flexi-day every second Friday; every day 24 hours a day they want to work. I work like that and I want everyone around me and my cows to do the same thing and the Jersey breed certainly does that. “You don’t have to go down the end of the yard to push any Jerseys up, where the Holsteins are always dragging the chain. Those little efficiencies in the workplace are pretty important to me.” Graeme says Jerseys better fit his local environment, with temperatures regularly hitting the 40s. “The Jerseys handle the hot weather a whole lot better than the Holsteins. They’ll be out foraging, looking for a feed, leading the rest of the cows.” He describes the health traits of a Jersey as “far, far superior” to a Holstein and says they are easy to get in calf. “Overall, they are a wonderful animal, and the breed organisations and breeders I’m involved with are great.” Graeme advises farmers converting to Jerseys to be patient. “You see your components coming up and your milk price coming up. Once we got past that 50-50 split, you really start to see the benefits. “I think they are the way forward for the dairy industry; I wish we had done it many years earlier.”

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

NICK BROKENSHIRE has always known the benefits of Jerseys – now his neighbours are discovering the secrets. Nick milks about 400 Jerseys at Mount Compass south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula, continuing a family tradition with his Amdena Jersey stud. The cows suit his needs and his conditions and Nick has noticed a general shift towards Jerseys in the region. “Around the area people are starting to look more at Jerseys or cross-breds,” he said. “They’re finding other cows are too big and don’t like to walk. Jerseys are fairly agile and fit and they are better converters.” Nick recently disposed of his last handful of crossbreds and says his Jerseys produce what he needs. “We believe that for their body weight they have better output and have less issues than other breeds,” he said. The cows produce about 500kg per cow on average, with 300kg of fat and 200kg of protein. “They’re good converters for what we put in,” Nick said. The Fleurieu region has a relatively mild climate, with less than 20 days over 30 degrees most years, and Nick says Jerseys cope in all conditions. “We have 50 hectares of irrigation in summer and the Jerseys seem to do pretty well on it,” he said. “From what I’ve seen, Jerseys seem to cope better than the black and whites in handling the heat.” Graeme says their Jersey herd fits his local environment, including days that hit 48 degrees.

Nick is one of several local suppliers to Fleurieu Milk Company. “They want a sustainable local product that’s fresh and reliable and something that consumers can trust,” he said. The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2021 // 25

WHY JERSEY?

TASMANIA

GEOFF HEAZLEWOOD’S farm is landlocked on three sides by the township of Latrobe and on the fourth side by the Mersey River on Tasmania’s north-west coast. With only 50 hectares at his disposal, Jerseys are the only logical stocking option. Geoff and Anne and their two staff milk 200 Jerseys on floodplain alluvial country, and the river has a history of floods, most recently inundating the property in 2016. “That’s one of the main reasons we are Jersey,” Geoff said. “It’s a small farm so smaller cattle suit it. Because it’s floodplain, the smaller cattle don’t tend to bog up the ground as much as the larger breeds.” While neighbouring farms need feed pads, Merseybank Jerseys is totally pasture based and manages to produce about 2000 KgMs per acre. “It’s a lot easier with smaller cattle,” Geoff said. Now 68, Geoff also appreciates the ease of handling Jerseys. “As you get a bit older, you’re not as physically strong and the smaller and more easily manoeuvrable animals tend to suit,” he said.

Tim farms at Glamorgan Vale, about 60km west of Brisbane, and deals with temperatures from the mid-30s and up over summer, high humidity and low rainfall. His herd of 160 includes 90 milkers and Tim says the Jerseys are “the most economic breed for our dryland farm”.

“Economically, reproduction and cost of feed input to milk output they’re the only choice.”

VICTORIA

“We wouldn’t be able to justify the input costs of buying feed for another breed because you have to feed them a lot more to make the same milk solids,” he said. It’s not just about the production costs; it’s how much he gets paid for the milk. “There are benefits from their fat and protein,” Tim said. “Some factories in Queensland pay a bit more for better quality milk and we’re a lot higher than the base price because of the Jerseys.” The base price in south-east Queensland is 57.7 cents but the Beattie farm is getting 72.93 cents because of their high fat and protein benefits and a bonus quality payment. Their success goes deeper than dollars and cents, with Tim describing Jerseys as “the hardiest breed”, an important factor in the prevailing conditions.

Geoff will celebrate his 50th anniversary on the farm in 2022, while his wife Anne’s family’s roots trace back 150 years on the land.

“You just let them out in the paddock and they’ll find something to eat whereas when it gets a bit warm, a lot of other breeds will find the nearest tree and lie down.”

QUEENSLAND

Other farmers in the region are making the transition. “A lot of farms that have been mainly Holsteins are moving more to Jerseys,” Tim said. “Farmers are using Jersey bulls over

Without Jerseys, south-east Queensland farmer TIM BEATTIE doesn’t think his business would survive.

other cows and milking a lot of Jersey cross cows or buying new Jerseys.

DARIEN MATHEWS grew up with Jerseys but his current connection to the breed runs a lot deeper than personal choice. Farming at Dumbalk in south Gippsland on a leased property with wife Alexandra, Darien’s 520-strong herd is 75 per cent Jersey along with some Holsteins and cross-breds. “It’s a personal preference because I grew up with Jerseys but we like their efficiencies and with their size, they’re a lot easier to handle,” he said. “If I have a cow down, I can sit her up on my own easier than a Holstein, and when we look at the herd test, the amounts of solids they put out considering how much smaller they are means they’re definitely more efficient.” Darien also likes the Jersey’s temperament. “The Jerseys come to you and want to know what’s going on, while the Holsteins stand at the back,” he said. However, it’s their economic success that drive the connection. “The last two years we’ve had gold and platinum production awards from Jersey Australia; they’re certainly giving good solids.” Darien and Alexandra have their own block of land with young stock and aspire to farm ownership, and Jerseys will always be the main part of the system.

Tim Beattie’s Queensland farm is often bone dry but the Jersey cows are the hardiest breed and most economical for the conditions.
