T
he Spring 2021 Class Tour has been a challenging tour that has certainly stretched the office and classifier team with an extended tour, increased cow numbers and the ongoing logistical challenges relating to COVID-19. the weather patterns and the inevitable timetable clashes. It certainly has been rewarding to watch the tour come together, meet the challenges head on and deliver the services to members across the country.
What is even more rewarding is seeing the many years of breeding by members deliver outstanding results. Six EX-94-point cows during the Spring 2021 and the 1st EX-95Point cow since Icy Eve in 2013 was an amazing outcome for Breeders and owners across the country. Congratulation to all and to not just to the owners and breeders of the 94’s and 95’s. Whether it’s your 1st time classifying cows, your 1st EX cow or 1st 88-point Heifer, you all deserve a pat on the back and round of applause as your efforts make the Australian Jersey cow for what she is Dairy’s Finest Cow! Farewell Lucy Webb-Wilson At the end of the January, I will be saddened to see Lucy Webb-Wilson leave JA. She has certainly been a great support to me and to you the member over the last 3 ½ years and will be missed by us all. On behalf of all the members and staff I wish Lucy the very best. Welcome Peter Roach Change brings opportunity and I am pleased to announce Peter Roach has accepted the role of Member Services Manager and will join Jersey Australia on January 5th. Welcome Peter. Peter has worked extensively in rural and dairy industry publications and has a great customer relations focus. Peter will be at IDW on the Tuesday and Wednesday so please call in and welcome Peter to JA. Glen Barrett General Manager

| DECEMBER 2021 ABV RELEASE | WORDS // JERSEY AUSTRALIA
Jerseys Strengthen Their Place In The Market J
ERSEYS have strengthened their place in the Australian dairy market with solid results in the December ABV release. Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said it was another positive release for Jerseys with overall strengthening of bulls, herds and cows. “It’s very positive to see bulls moving from genomic to proven list and maintaining proofs,” Mr Barrett said. On the critical Balanced Performance Index (BPI), Jerseys continued to press
ahead, maintaining a strong average 385 BPI for the top 10 bulls. “The BPI is quite stable and the positive is that as we have new daughters coming into proofs from winter and spring calving, we’re continuing to see genomic bulls adding daughters and maintaining their proof, and the daughters are performing to expectations” Ms Barrett said. Key bull movements included DOUGGAN increasing 30 BPI with improved overall type, mastitis resistance and fertility, and DOBSON up 31 BPI with improved fertility, overall type (OT) up six points and Mammary up four points. The BPI for the top 50 bulls increased from 340 BPI on average in August to 352BPI, while OT remained steady at 105. Herd lists also improved on their BPI, with Robert and Sandra Bacon’s Brookbora Jerseys at Tennyson in
The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2022 // 8
northern Victoria maintaining its top ranking with 204 BPI, up from 190 in August, followed by Con and Michelle Glennen’s White Star Jerseys at Noorat in western Victoria with 202 BPI, up from 175 in August. Warrain, Kings Ville and Kaarmona Jerseys rounded out the top five. Heifers and cows were stable and in line with December reports. There are now only 24 cows in the top 100 in milk cows which are not genomic tested, with Jersey Australia’s test project starting to have an impact. The top young cow with a BPI of 389 is owned by Matthew Hoffman at Timboon, Victoria, the top genomictested cow with a BPI of 471 is Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 11EX 94 recently purchased at the record breaking Cairnbrae dispersal sale by DHGRS Singh from Collins Creek NSW and the top not genomic-tested cow with a BPI of 495 is owned by Cameron Green of Casino NSW.

’94 Club’
Congratulations to our members the Broad family ‘Broadlin’ and the Kuhne family ‘Bushlea’ on recently being awarded newly 94 pointed animals.
Broadlin Beryl 3028 This line of the Beryl family originated from Francliff, its not a family that has been dominate within our herd, they just go about their business with little fuss. She has an interesting paternal pedigree being the third generation to be sired by a progeny test sire. All 3 where used at Broadlin as PT sires in their first year available. Aberian, VANAHLEM and Flowerpower. She doesn’t like to have heifer calves, of the 7 calves she has had only 1 heifer and that was the result of sexed semen. She was Reserve Champion in the Sth Gippsland OFC in 2019. Her highest production year saw her produce 680kg’s milk solids.
Further congratulations to the powerhouse ‘Bushlea’ brand having Bushlea Irwin Jenny classify Ex94 for her owners – Rocky Allen, Craig & Julie O’Meara, Weeksdale Holsteins (CAN), Frank & Diane Borba (USA), and also to the recent EX95 scoring of Wanstead Valentino Fernleaf Ex95– owned and bred by Roger and Amanda Heath, the Fernleaf maternal line doesn’t miss. What an achievement!

| JERSEY AUSTRALIA AGM 2022 |
Something For Everyone T
HE Jersey Australia AGM and conference will be heading to Tasmania for the first time in several years – and there will be a lot more than cows on the agenda.
The suggested accommodation venue is the Gateway Hotel and should be booked independently. Ken urged members to book early to secure a room and to confirm numbers for the tours.
The conference is slated for May 24-26 and the local organising committee is planning a smorgasbord of visits to agricultural and tourist attractions – along with Jersey herds.
On Tuesday, members can go on a bus tour to the north-west coast. Local guide Rod Saltmarsh will point out landmarks and talk about the history of the district as the group travels towards Smithton.
Tasmanian branch president Ken Lawrence is heading up the committee and says the conference will give visitors a taste of the variety in Tasmanian agriculture.
There will be stops at the Big Tree and Dip Falls, including trying to find a giant freshwater crayfish on the way.
Along with visits to Jersey farms, participants will see berry, poultry and goat farms…and they will also get to hunt for crayfish and truffles! Ken said the planning committee was trying to cover all bases. “There is a lot of different agriculture in Tasmania, particularly through the north-west region, so we thought we’d mix it up a bit. It’s not just about the cows.” However, there will also be plenty for Jersey enthusiasts. “It hasn’t been easy to get to the mainland for the past two years so it will be a good chance to catch up with a few breeders, and give more people a chance to see how good Tassie is,” Ken said. Conference participants are expected to fly into Launceston on Monday May 23 and will go in a bus to Devonport. The last time the Tasmanian branch hosted the AGM it was based at Launceston so it has been decided to focus on a different part of the state this time. There will be an informal get together Monday evening at the Southern Wild Distillery for gin tastings and a platter tea.
The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2022 // 14
Lunch and a herd visit will be at Judy and Brian Johns’ Craiglawn Jerseys stud, started in 1967 by Peter McCulloch. During the afternoon there will be a visit to The Nut, a volcanic outcrop overlooking the historic fishing village of Stanley. A chairlift can take people to a panoramic view or there will be time to look around the historic town. Dinner and the Dairy’s Finest showcase sale will be at the Gateway on Tuesday night. The sale will follow the same format introduced during the 2021 conference. Guest speaker during the dinner will be Jane Bennett, local businesswoman, cheesemaker and Nuffield Scholar. The Wednesday itinerary includes a bus trip into the central district east of Devonport to a poultry and goat farm, a new visitor centre at Ashgrove Cheese where co-owner Michael Bennett will talk about its history, Tasmanian Berries to hear from owner Andrew Terry and after lunch there will be a truffle farm tour and hunt. The tour will finish with a visit to Geoff Heazlewood’s Jersey herd at Latrobe. The conference will finish on Thursday morning with the AGM.

Can Genetics Help Calves Thrive? T
HE former Jersey Australia president has welcomed industry research into calf vitality, saying a breeding value for this trait could help trim calf rearing costs. Cooriemungle Jersey breeder Chis MacKenzie said research to create the nation’s first calf vitality Australian Breeding Value (ABV), determining if there’s a genetic variation between calves that thrive and those that don’t, was something Jersey Australia tried to initiate years ago.
He was enthusiastic about the insight this research, conducted by DataGene Project Lead-Genomics and LaTrobe University/DairyBio PhD candidate Michelle Axford, could deliver for the breed.
Chris’ 220-cow Jireh Jersey operation is one of the 50 dairy farms that were recruited to genomically test calves and record their health and vitality from birth to weaning for the research project.
“It’s important to get as much information as we can gather of the early stages of a calf’s’ life,” he said.
At the end of spring 2021, these farms added another 10,000 datasets of genotypes and phenotypes (performance records) to existing historical industry records.
“It helps us better understand the next generation of cows that will enter our milking herds.”
Chris said a calf vitality Australian Breeding Value (ABV) could contribute to easier calf rearing and lower rearing costs.0 “Healthy vigorous calves, born with real get-up-and-go, are easier to rear because they seem to be more aggressive feeders,” he said. “It gives you confidence that they are going to do well later in life. The ones that struggle, they stand to the side and don’t do as well, they probably cost more to rear because more work needs to go into them.” Research leader Michelle Axford wants more passionate calf rearers, like Chris, to join the project to bolster the study. She hopes to gather sufficient evidence, from her research, so that dairy farmers could one day select bulls and replacement heifers that breed vigorous calves. “Calves take a lot of time, heart and money and are a third of the stock carried on-farm, but we don’t have tools to genetically improve calf health traits in our businesses,” Michelle said. “I’m interested in calf survival, but my theory is that it’s not just about living or dying; calf rearers are annoyed by calves with poor vitality that survive – but cost a lot of time and heartache.”
Can genetics be the difference between calves that survive and those that thrive? Michelle Axford, DataGene Group Leader – Genomics and LaTrobe University PhD candidate, is researching this question, aiming to create Australia’s first calf vitality Australian Breeding Value.
The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2022 // 16
DataGene has 50 Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) but only two, currently, relate to calves. These are Calving Ease and Gestation Length; contributing to an easier
calving for a cow or heifer or shorter gestation length. Early findings from Michelle’s research – analysing historical calving records – has provided insight into the current state of calf health and vitality. She found differences between dairy breeds and while Michelle said this was “interesting” the most useful information – and central to the research – was the variation between animals within breeds. Some of her findings included: 5 per cent of female and 8 per cent of male calves birthed by a Holstein cow were born dead. For Jerseys, this was 7 per cent of females and 10 per cent of males. When all the data, across a range of herds and breeds was combined, 8 per cent of female and 13 per cent of male births were classified by farmers as “difficult” if the dam was Holstein. For a Jersey dam only 3 per cent of female births and 4 per cent of male births carried this classification.
Still births
“Then we have nothing for bull calves, other than if they lived or died, and in addition – dead calves don’t get an ID. If something doesn’t get an ID in the system, we lose track. Then there’s the sale of male or female calves before they receive an ID; they are other cases where we can lose information.”

“We know that calving difficulty for a cow or calf is one of the most painful things they can experience,” Michelle said.
As part of this current DairyBio project, dairy farmers have been asked to genomically test calves and then rate their vitality from one to five – the bottom indicating a dead calf and the top a “ripper”.
“This data suggests there’s an opportunity to improve cow welfare using Calving Ease ABVs and sexed semen.”
Michelle is grateful for industry support for the project, including from Jersey Australia. “Their practical support of the project means that farmers, breed organisations, DataGene and DairyBio are all putting their shoulders behind this work,” she said
Focusing on genetics to help calves thrive is gaining traction around the world, but Michelle said researching calves was “complicated” because of gaps in the records. “In Australia, we’ve got some fantastic farmers who do a great job of recording calving information, but we haven’t asked people to specifically record additional information like calf illness or deaths,” she said.
Michelle is looking for more herd to join the project, especially those calving this summer and autumn. For more information contact Michelle Axford: michelle.axford@agriculture. vic.gov.au, Mobile 0427 573 330.

WO new studies have found that Jerseys have the attributes that can make them Australia’s most profitable and sustainable cows.
Jerseys currently make up about 15 per cent of the national herd and that figure has been steadily rising over the past decade.
The studies by consultants Steve Little and Scott Barnett show that Jerseys have higher fertility, higher production efficiency, and greater heat tolerance and longevity compared to other breeds, while modelling shows Jerseys have up to 14 per cent advantage over Holstein Friesians in the cost of producing milk kg/Ms and a better return on asset.
Dr Little’s review found that Jerseys produce 6-11% more energy-corrected milk (ECM) than Holsteins per kilogram of dry matter intake; 26-31% more ECM per 100 kg bodyweight than Holsteins; have about 14-21% higher feed intake capacity than Holsteins per 100kg bodyweight; and have about 5% higher feed intake capacity than Holsteins per unit of metabolic weight.
Jersey Australia engaged Dr Little of Capacity+ Ag Consulting to review evidence in published studies on the attributes of the Australian Jersey compared to other breeds. Following Dr Little’s report Jersey - The Most Profitable and Sustainable cow? - Jersey Australia engaged Mr Barnett of Scott Barnett & Associates to undertake desktop economic modelling of Jersey versus Holstein Friesians in Australian dairy production systems. Jersey Australia CEO Glen Barrett said the independent studies back up what Jersey farmers have been claiming for years; that Jersey cows are more profitable and sustainable. “We work on the principle that the Jersey cow is the most profitable cow in the dairy industry; this was an opportunity to gather hard evidence to support that,” Mr Barrett said.
“We work on the principle that the Jersey cow is the most profitable cow in the dairy industry; this was an opportunity to gather hard evidence to support that,” Glen Barrett “This review found that the Australian Jersey has several attributes compared with other breeds used in the Australian dairy industry that may contribute to the profitability and sustainability of Australian dairy farm businesses,” Dr Little said. “In doing this review, I’ve discovered Jerseys are remarkably different to
“We needed the facts to back up the call and now we have them. All the evidence is backed by research that will stand up to any scrutiny.” Mr Barrett said the studies’ findings would be used to publicise the breed and inform farmers of the benefits of transitioning to Jerseys. “Our ambition is to have 25 per cent of Jerseys in the national dairy herd by 2030. It is achievable with the right strategies and these studies will help guide us to that goal. “Farmers are looking for profitability and now we have the proof that Jerseys are the most profitable cow.” The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2022 // 21
other breeds in a number of ways,” he said. “I wish I had known what I know now about Jerseys and how to manage their nutrition when I was a young farm advisor.” Fat and protein concentrations in Jersey milk are higher than those of Holsteins by about 1.1-1.4 g/100ml and 0.5-0.56 g/100ml respectively. Jersey milk has higher concentrations of calcium, phosphorus and zinc but a lower concentration of potassium. Jerseys have higher fertility than Holsteins which Dr Little said was likely due to genetic selection and energy metabolism, particularly in the transition period and early lactation, leaving Jerseys in negative energy balance for a shorter time. “Fertility jumps out as a significant advantage,” he said. They are also more heat tolerant due to their hair coat, skin structure, subcutaneous fat layer, and body surface area-to-volume ratio. “Jerseys tend to live longer, produce for longer, and survive to later lactations more frequently than Holsteins in straight and mixed-breed herds,” Dr Little said. “Increased longevity in a herd means the herd’s average milk production is higher and fewer non-productive replacement heifers are required.”
Their ability to eat relative to their bodyweight is higher and they spend more time grazing and eating more evenly across the day. There is also evidence indicating that Jerseys have higher NDF digestibility and may utilise dietary nitrogen more efficiently. The review found that Jerseys appear to be performing well in mixed breed Australian herds, although those in straight Jersey herds produce more milk solids per year than those in mixed herds. Dr Little found that Jerseys have demonstrated advantages in grazing systems, longevity, productive life, calving ease, fertility, heat tolerance and hybrid vigour contribution, are better suited to walking long distances for grazing and can adapt to different production systems. They also potentially have a smaller environmental footprint. “Several studies have suggested that the emission intensity of milk production is about 8-12% lower with a Jersey herd compared to a Holstein herd when the life cycle analysis approach was used to calculate GHG emissions,” Dr Little said. “However, there may be little difference between the breeds in emission intensity of milk production, as Jerseys emit more methane per kg DM intake compared to Holsteins.” The follow-up economic modelling to assess potential of Jersey cows to
enhance the profitability of Australian dairy farm businesses found the Jersey breed is as well placed to deliver a profitable outcome as the other major pure breed cattle breed in Australia, the Holstein Friesian. The follow-up economic modelling to assess potential of Jersey cows to enhance the profitability of Australian dairy farm businesses found the Jersey breed is at least as well placed to deliver a profitable outcome as the other major pure breed cattle breed in Australia, the Holstein Friesian. Mr Barnett said his report was based on broad assumptions and not definitive but was designed to guide discussions about breed selection and identify under which conditions Jersey cattle are able to be more profitable than Holstein - Friesian cattle. Mr Barnett developed two models – one with a high proportion of directly grazed grass (HiGrass) based on dairy farming systems of southern Victoria, Tasmania and south east South Australia, and the second with a higher proportion of purchased concentrates and purchased forage resulting in higher DM intake (HiCons) being fed reflecting northern Victoria, NSW, WA, and Queensland systems. The HiCons also had higher milk production for both Holstein Friesian and Jersey herds. His study found in the HiGrass system, the investment cost was $17.24 kg/Ms for the Jersey herd compared to $19.67 for the Holstein Friesian herd – a 14%
advantage, and in the HiCons system the investment cost was $12.30 kg/Ms for the Jersey herd compared to $14.38 for Holstein Friesian herd, a 13% advantage. He found Jerseys have a significantly higher income per hectare and feed utilised – an inherent advantage – however their economic advantage was diminished by lower value per kilogram in the market. “The major relative disadvantage the breed seems to suffer is the sale value of surplus stock (cull cows, bull calves and surplus heifers). This disadvantage may be overcome with current work being carried out on improving the dairy beef supply chain and educating buyers on advantages of dairy beef stock.” Mr Barnett added that the export market was pushing up prices for Holstein heifers, creating a lower entry price for Jerseys which improves their return on asset. His modelling found that the comparative advantage of Jerseys was more apparent in lower grazing intake systems than in the high grazed grass model. “Based on the Jersey’s reported higher dry matter intake per unit of body weight coupled with the Jersey’s reported higher conversion of dry matter intake into ECM, it would be expected that under a higher feed intake model the Jersey would be able to exhibit these advantages more readily,” he said. “It appears that the closer a Jersey is fully fed, the more she is able to fully express her comparative advantage.” Mr Barnett said any advantage the Jersey breed enjoyed in EBIT performance was further enhanced when measured against return on asset. “Jerseys are, at the very least, as good as Holstein-Friesians and have excellent production advantages that utilise their feed efficiency and follow through to an economic response,” he said. IDW, the meeting place of Australian Dairy
I
DW has transformed over the decades, much like the industry which it showcases. What began as a cow show, attracting local and interstate industry people, has grown into a week long show for all breeds, sales, educational and experiential seminars, farm tours, technology and trade shows and now has made Australia, and in particular this event, a ‘must see’ for anyone invested in the dairy industry. Today though, it’s seen as more than any of the aforementioned draws, which bring our industry to congregate in Tatura, mid-January. This is the meeting place, the place where friendships are formed, where mentors are met and where knowledge and expertise are shared. It’s the place where there’s a race for the broad ribbons. It’s the place, where (more often than not) a lifetimes work is on display, where sincere compliments about cow families and breeding strategies are felt. Its also the place, where after riding the peaks and troughs of weather and milk prices, like-minded industry peers can share the load and hit the refresh button before heading back to their own corner. IDW is concreted in many people diaries, for many different reasons, and this is precisely why we all love going!

Embracing Aussie AG F
OR someone from south-west London, Lucy Webb-Wilson has quickly embraced and been embraced by Australian agriculture. Lucy is preparing to leave her role as Jersey Australia’s Member Services Manager but is moving from an office-based agricultural job to a farm-based one. With her partner Barnaby, Lucy will be running a beef farm in the Macedon Ranges. The move was a big part of her decision to leave JA. “We are pursuing our own business endeavours on farm and I will be looking at other work opportunities closer from home, although the plan is that my job off farm will be not related to agriculture,” she said. At the moment Lucy and Barnaby run British White Beef cattle on 130 acres but are looking to potentially expand into free-range pork. They won’t be farming dairy cows; however, Lucy might have some space to agist some Jersey heifers. “It has been a big journey for a girl from south-west London through studying biology and then moving into agriculture and then a farm in the Macedon Ranges,” she said.
COVID and remote work made it more difficult for Lucy and the two members of her team over the past two years. “Working remotely and delegating tasks is a bit more challenging but we tried to retain as much normalcy as possible for the membership during the pandemic,” she said. Lucy had previously worked with JA general manager Glen Barrett at DataGene and was keen to take on the challenge of helping the organisation through a period of growth in services delivered to members and the introduction of a new database. “There was a large database update and I could use my logistics skills to streamline it and make the systems in the office more efficient to deliver the best services possible for members,” she said. While it’s a cliché, Lucy said that working with the members was the best part of her job. “I have got to know members from all different states and learn a lot about parts of Australia that I didn’t know about beforehand,” she said. “I enjoy
But she found a kindred spirit with the Jersey community. “I really want to thank the members and the JA community for how welcoming they have been to me over the past three years,” she said, “Especially as a Pom who doesn’t come from an agricultural family, it has been fabulous to work with them.” Her JA role involved managing the day-to-day running of the office, being a point of contact for members, dealing with any member issues, communicating changes and managing the logistics behind classification and tours. “It was about making sure everything runs as smoothly as possible,” she said. solving a problem or making something easier for somebody, and when someone says that’s taken the weight off their shoulders, that gives me the warm fuzzies.” Lucy plans to leave at the end of January, depending on the role being filled. “I wish members all the best and hope the breed grows from strength to strength, as I’m sure it will.” Glen Barrett said Lucy had been a valuable member of the team over the past three years. “Lucy oversaw implementation of the new database ILR2 (International Livestock Recording) put in place in January 2019 and subsequently made improvements, particularly around export heifers that facilitated a lot of efficiencies,” Glen said. “During COVID, she bore the brunt of the work on her own and has always been a valuable resource and someone we can rely on. “We’ll certainly miss her in the team.”

Distinguished Service Award For Winsome Anderson
W
HILE her first name has often been mistaken for Winston Churchill, Winsome Anderson (pictured) does share something in common with the former UK Prime Minister.
cows are as old as the Kings Vale cows, and the family received a certificate at the Jersey Australia AGM for being more than 100 years old. Two years after Bert died, the Kings View herd was divided between their three sons, Lindsey and Jacinta (Kings Vista) Ian (Kings View) and Robert and Kerri (Kings Ville)
Her motto for life is “never, never give up”, a phrase made famous by Churchill, and at 85 it continues to guide her outlook, even if she doesn’t have a bowler hat or a cigar. “At 85 I can reflect on my life’s journey and give thanks for a wonderful and successful family. I treasure the memories of my world travels and the honour of representing our Australian Jerseys abroad,” she said. “I’m blessed with good health and I can do little chores around my property and help out when needed.” Winsome was presented with the Distinguished Services Award at the recent Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club on farm challenge dinner in recognition of her ongoing promotion and involvement in the Jersey breed. Jerseys have always been part of Winsome’s life. She was raised around Jerseys; her husband Bert was a committee member for 13 years before his death in 1987 and her son Rob is now on the Jersey Australia Board. She attended every World Jersey Cattle Bureau conference from 1972 to 2018 – 14 in total - along with 11 of the Bureau’s council meetings in different parts of the world. In 1999 she was co-opted to the Australian Jersey Breeders Association organising committee prior to hosting World Jersey Cattle Bureau conference in Melbourne, and was official Australian delegate to the conference in the United Kingdom in 1992 and South Africa in 1997. Winsome has been a member of Central Gippsland and South Gippsland Jersey clubs for more than 60 years and continues to donate to the Youth Show.
Winsome moved to Clyde where she farmed beef for 24 years before moving to a 50-acre block at Nar Nar Goon to be closer to family and where she holds an extensive archive of family and Jersey history. She even celebrated her 80th birthday on Jersey Island. “I’ve been in every continent except Antarctica meeting people and viewing our beautiful golden Jersey cows,” she said. “I’ve been to amazing places and seen a lot of the heritage spots and beauty around the world. It’s incredible in Switzerland how they farm the Jerseys on the mountain sides to produce their own cheeses and sell directly off the farm.” Winsome was born into a Jersey family in 1936. Her father Norrie De la rue created his Jersey stud Lucerne Vale in 1925 and had some of the top producing Jerseys recorded by herd test organisations in those early days. He later moved to Irrewillipe in south-west Victoria, where Winsome went to school, and because Lucerne wouldn’t grow at Irrewillipe, he created a second stud named Glenwyn. Winsome married Bert in 1959 and became part of another Jersey dynasty dating back to 1886 when Kings Vale was originated by Joseph and Christina Anderson at Lyndhurst, between Dandenong and Cranborne. Kings Vale was divided in 1961 and Bert and Winsome developed a new farm and created Kings View stud. The The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2022 // 30
While based at Clyde in 1993 she former Kayvee Jerseys but because she couldn’t milk the cows at that farm, they live with Ian’s Kings View herd. Her premier cow families include Heather Belle, Graceful Design, Martha’s Joy and Viola, which originated from her father’s stud. A member of the Victorian Farmers Federation, Winsome was awarded the President’s Medal from the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in 1996 and was a recipient of the Centenary Medal distributed by the Australian Government in 2001. Winsome has been a member of Women on Farms West Gippsland for more than 20 years, which has taken her to all parts of Victoria. The next World Conference was due to be in Gippsland this year and although deferred because of COVID, Winsome hopes the opening of our international borders will encourage the Bureau to revive its plans. “My biggest circle of friends over the past 46 years has been through the Jersey cow,” she said. “I hope it comes here and that people get behind it.” As for attending future world conferences in other countries, Winsome thinks that’s unlikely … but she won’t say never.

Spring Classification Round-up The Spring Classification tour has seen the JA Classifier traversing the country visiting our many valued members across all States. It was great to see and increase of around 30% in class bookings for the spring. Combined with strong Ginfo numbers and an increase in LTE requirements our classifiers were kept exceptionally busy. We also were able to support the Aussie Bred Breeds and provided LTE services for their members. Floods in Nth NSW, pressing border closures in WA and major storms in Vic combined with major power outages at scheduled hotels were some of the challenges our class team faced. More importantly though, amazing cows and welcoming members greeted the team as they arrived on farm. There was some terrific class results. Over the last couple of years we have seen a growing number of 93 points cows. This trend is now flowing into an increasing number of 94 points cows which is in line with what should be expected with breeding for Genetic Improvement. Congrats to all members and special congrats to those who’s cows received 95 and 94 points.
