It takes a special cow to win Supreme Champion at IDW once. To do it twice makes her all the little more special. And when you consider the calibre of competition in both her class, the senior championship and overall Supreme Champion, there is no doubt that the Jersey breed has seen an incredibly special cow indeed in Windy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7

Bred by Frank Walsh and owned in partnership by Frank with Brad and Jess Gavenlock of Cherrylock Jerseys, Dawn 7 has no doubt cemented her place as one of the best the breed has seen across the globe after claiming her 2nd IDW Supreme Champion Rug. My congratulations to Brad, Jess and Frank. The look of joy on your face tells a thousand stories that no doubt come together in your love and affection for Dawn 7.

Classification may need to be undertaken over a wider time which could mean, that the classification visit to your region may not be when you consider the best time for the classification visit.

While no doubt there is varying times of the year that cows look better than other times, you can rest assured the Jersey Australia Classifiers are trained to appropriately assess the cow at all stages of a lactation.

To ensure the Association can meet service demands without placing increased undue pressure on the class team over a brief period in the spring, changes may need to be implemented to counter this.

Growth in classification driving need for changes

Jersey Most Profitable Cow

Over the last couple of years, we have seen significant growth in classification with 2021 class being up close to 30% on 2020 this is a significant growth in class services.

People wanting more information can contact Jane on 0422 640 533. The $10,000 will be allocated each financial year ending on February 28.

After many years of discussing the opportunity, the Board of Jersey Australia have committed to the engagement of a Part Time Field Officer to support Association Membership and Services Growth Objectives. This is a significant investment in the Associations future and will come with expectation to deliver growth in new memberships and services from new memberships and existing members. The role is supported by the Association investments however revenue expectations over the longer term should see the Association recoup the investment through increased memberships and service Theprovisions.position is being budgeted for as a part time role for a period of 12 months and is supported to ensure it visits every dairy region in Australia. Extension opportunities will be considered subject to meeting set KPI’s and development of new service opportunities. We ask members to let us know of any Jersey farmers in your region who you consider would be interested in becoming a member. We expect to be working closely with clubs in the regions when planning a visit and maximising new member opportunities for clubs as well.

The Jersey Milk Coffees were again an enormous success at IDW. We are starting to build a loyal following of regulars all keen to have their morning cuppa powered by Jersey Milk. Was great to see ABS Australia approach us and fund a coffee to anyone who picked up an ABS coffee cup. Look forward to developing this further next year. Thanks also to Safe Ag system who joined us on the site for the Tuesday and Wednesday as well as providing the donuts and muffins that we delivered to members in the sheds with some great coffees and hot chocolates With no designated IDW Charity this year we took the opportunity to donate the $235 raised to Dolly’s Dream. Thanks to all for your great support Farm Safety

NEW $10,000 GRANTS FUND

The National Centre for Farmer Health is seeking your assistance in completing a survey that is exploring the behaviours, attitudes and lifestyles of children on farm. With 15% of all farms related fatalities being children under the age of 15, your support in driving safety improvements on farm for your children, grandchildren or friends will be much appreciated You can access the survey and more information at orau/jfe/form/SV_e50fTR30RDKn9H0https://researchsurveys.deakin.edu.–scantheQRcode

A new Jersey Australia Community Grants Fund will provide $10,000 each year to support community events across the country. The new funding structure is designed as a more targeted way to distribute support and sponsorship to Jersey members, clubs and events. Chair of Promotions Jane Sykes said the fund had been developed to provide sponsorship and support to community events across Australia where Jersey clubs or members have an active participation and there is an opportunity to promote Jersey Australia.Applications will be reviewed by the JA president, Chair of Promotions and General Manager. Since JA’s inception, states have been individually funded but not all state committees still operate, necessitating a change to the funding model.

The application form can be found https://jersey.com.au/ja-community-grants-fund/at

Forty per cent of the funding pool is allocated for major state shows and youth shows across Australia, excluding International Dairy Week, with funding of up to $1000 being made available to individual events. Twenty five percent is allocated to youth education, development or leadership activities with a $400 limit, 25 per cent to local events and there is 10 per cent allowed for discretionary funding.

“The states will receive less in direct funding but the money that had been going to states will now go to the Community Grants Fund,” Jane saidThe state committees are being informed of the changes and the total funding pool remains as previous but is expected to be used each year in totality which hadn’t been occurring under the previous funding model. JA has been receiving an increasing number of letters seeking sponsorship for events.“This provides the opportunity for everyone to apply for a grant,” Jane said. The total fund will be $10,000 per year and Jane says it will be a more targeted way to distribute the funding. “It relies on people to submit an application but it will open it to people who may not have thought about JA funding,” Jane said. “It’s very important that our cattle clubs can approach us for sponsorship and that everyone has the same access to support, regardless of whether they have a state branch or not. “JA can only sponsor a certain amount; the money is set so everyone has the same chance at the same pool of money.”Applications must be submitted in writing and outline how the money will be used, how the JA member or club is involved in the event and how JA will be recognised.

The changes have been endorsed by the Board and Jane encouraged clubs and members to apply. “We’re looking forward to supporting more diverse events in more locations,” she said.

VISITORS to the Johns-McCulloch farm during the annual conference tour will meet four generations of farmers and see two studs and a landmark view. Despite a dry summer, the cows are in good shape at the moment and Judy hopes they will put on a good show in May, but there’s still a lot to see on the family farm with a stunning view of The Nut at Stanley.

Sam has now taken over the breeding program for the studs. The mix of breeds works well, though Jerseys slightly outnumber their larger Ayrshire counterparts.

Nathan is also introducing the next generation with his daughters Eleanor and Calista and another child on the way with wife Nikola.

The Australian Jersey Journal – March-April 2022 // 12 | 2022 AGM & CONFERENCE | WORDS // MEDIAMASTERS

Judy and Brian previously hosted a Jersey Australia tour in the late 1990s, and while she says not much has changed since then, she expects

Judy’s father Peter McCulloch, now nearing 78 years, also lives on the farm, and they have been joined by their daughter, Samantha, who has been part of the farm for 11 years, and son Nathan, who returned last year.

Craiglawn Jersey Stud was established by Judy’s parents Peter and Elizabeth McCulloch in 1967, while the Craigville Ayrshire stud started in 2000, combining the names of Craiglawn from Judy’s parent’s stud and Ville from Brian’s parent’s stud.

Studs With A View

Judy Johns and her husband Brian are continuing two family studs on the South Forest farm – Craiglawn Jerseys and Craigville Ayrshires.

The two breeds and four generations all mix together cohesively on 350 acres of grass, including 60-70 under irrigation, and about 150 acres of Thebushland.herdproduces about 81,000 kg/Ms per year, and there are 122 autumn calvers and 93 spring calvers.

The farm is subject to the variables of the weather. “We went to an Ayrshire calf day a few weeks ago and when we went over the hills you could tell where they’ve had decent rain because it was so much greener,” Judy said.

“They run together and there’s no issue,” Judy said. “They’re both good for production and they don’t bog the pastures like the big Holsteins in the wet Whileweather.”thebigger Ayrshires produce a few more litres, both breeds are similar with fat and protein.

Judy expects to have the milkers on display for the tour. “We definitely need rain; we’re very dry at the moment but the cows are in pretty good condition,” she said. “Our feed rep just went through our milkers and dry cows and she said there were only three per cent a little bit under.”

They feed silage and hay year-round and the young cattle also get oats. “We’re lucky we do our own harvesting and use mostly home-grown feed; the irrigation is an advantage,” Judy said.

The property has been in Anne’s family – the Bonneys - for five generations, with its history tracing back more than 150 years. It is one of the oldest continuous farms in the area and covers 56 hectares of river flats bounded by the town on one side and the Mersey River on the other. “We irrigate out of the river but at times we get unwanted flood water,” Geoff admits. They are now milking 240 Jerseys with a 50:50 split between autumn and spring calvers. The stud was started in 1954 by Anne’s grandparents and father. Geoff’s father was a builder but both his grandparents were farmers and he always wanted to follow their lead. “All I ever wanted to do was be a farmer, which applies to my brother as well,” he said. “When I was seven or eight my next-door neighbour had a Jersey stud and asked if I would like to lead the calves at the local show. I became very interested after that.”

Geoff studied agriculture at Dookie for three years and while he was away, the farmer where he was working sold his cows.

“Those cows came back to Merseybank. I followed the cows and met Anne and that was nearly 50 years ago. We’ve been married for 48 years.”

While Merseybank hasn’t shown recently, the stud has won all-breed ribbons at the Tasmanian Dairy Fair, won at Dairy Week and had the inaugural Great Australian Challenge winner in 2013 with MERSEYBANK ELTONS CLAIRE, which also had ongoing success over several years in the Great Southern Challenge.

Craiglawn Jerseys visitors will enjoy the experience. “It will be good for people to see what we have bred and for us it will be good to get other people’s views,” she said. “We don’t get the chance to go to many tours because we milk year-round but Sam likes showing so we get to catch up with what we class as our show “It’sfamily.good to see the different ways everyone is breeding.”

Geoff isn’t making any promises about what visitors will see, but his track record is impressive. “They’ll see a herd of Jersey cows; people will make up their own minds if they are a good herd,” he said.

The Australian Jersey Journal – March-April 2022 // 13

Geoff said the 2016 losses mean there’s a shallow spot in the herd at the moment with fewer cattle about six-years-old, but he expects visitors to find a lot to keep them happy.

“You’d give people support in similar circumstances but I was quite unprepared for what we received,” he Theysaid. lost four cows and a nearly all of their autumn calves, not only in the flood but from pneumonia afterwards.

“Jerseys suit us on the flats because they’re not as big as stud Holsteins and they don’t bog it up as much,” Geoff “Assaid.you get a bit older, you’re not as physically strong and being a smaller cow, they are a lot easier to handle which suits me. “They’ve been good to us, that’s for Thesure.”herd is averaging about 6000 litres, 300 fat and 40-50 protein. Geoff says the region has a lot to offer beyond Jersey cows for conference “I’veattendees.been to a lot of the AGMs and it’s not just about cows all the time,” he “It’ssaid.a chance to catch up with friends and see different regions and other things that are happening. North-west Tasmania is a great food producing area. It’s not only about our cows, it’s the other things that are happening in the area that people will see.”

Opening With Thanks FOR Geoff and Anne Heazlewood, opening their farm for the Jersey Australia annual conference isn’t just about showing their cows; it’s to say thank you. The Merseybank farm at Latrobe in north-west Tasmania will be on the tour itinerary in May, marking the first time the Heazlewoods have hosted a farm tour. In 2016 when the farm was decimated by floods, Jersey Australia members came to their aid with moral and financial support and Geoff and Anne want to repay the compliment. “In 2016 we were completely submerged,” Geoff said. “At the time we received a lot of support from Jersey breeders right around Australia and for that we are thankful and quite happy to let them come and see where their money went.”

In addition to cash donations and direct support from cattle clubs, Geoff and Anne received many phone calls and offers of support.

These include finalists in the Great Southern Challenge, winner in the Leading Edge Genetics OFC (All-breeds) and winning 3 classes in the 2021 South-Gippsland On Farm Challenge. Warren started the Jersey herd approximately 20 years ago through purchasing cattle from ‘Lochlea Stud’ and have in the past 10 years fully registered the herd and also started classifying and genomic testing. Based 5km from Yarram, South Gippsland on a milking platform of 400 acres, with 2 supporting blocks totalling an additional 300 acres, the couple milk a herd of 250 cows.

FOLEAMA CASINO SILVERMINE was an eye-catcher from the start. “She was a heifer Dad and I had picked out since she was a calf,” Erin said. “We really like her phenotypes and she has a really good temperament and comes from a strong maternal family of the TheSilvermines.”August-born heifer also won at the Cohuna Show last autumn. “I love the balance of the heifer and how she is developing,” Erin added. Erin always aims to be successful whether she’s exhibiting her own cattle or preparing for others. “It’s a bit of an extra reward to do it with cattle you’ve bred yourself,” she Inadded.anycase, Erin is just happy to be pursing her passion at a major show. “It was great to get back at the show; it’s a credit to the organisers to run a successful show with all the chaos at the moment,” she said. Sarah Lloyd was handler for FOLEAMA CASINO SILVERMINE. The Fergusons milk about 250 cows on 350 hectares and also run small sheep and beef operations. Holsteins constitute the bulk of the herd, which also features Viking Reds.

Family Success THE Ferguson family had plenty of reasons to smile after International Dairy Week with two championships in different classes and with different breeds. Erin’s FOLEAMA CASINO SILVERMINE was the Jersey Junior Champion while her parents Andrew and Fleur were successful in the Intermediate Ayrshire trophy with LARA ORLANDA WhileCONETTA.they’re working with different breeds, all the cows are milked on the same farm at Toolamba in northern Victoria and if there’s any rivalry, it’s definitely of the friendly type. The Foleama Jersey stud was established in 1947 and Erin, 29, took on the responsibility of running the well-established stud when she was just 11 years old. Erin now lives at Macorna between Cohuna and Kerang with her partner Murray on his family’s beef farm but the Jerseys are milked on the Ferguson farm at Toolamba. Erin manages the young stock, shared over both Showingproperties.has been part of her life for a long time and winning at Dairy Week is one of the highlights. “We’ve been showing since Dairy Week started and since I’ve operated my own stud,” Erin said. “We’ve had quite a lot of success with our different breeds.”

Scooping The Pool KING’S VALE JOEL MADGE was not only good enough to win the Jersey Intermediate Champion at International Dairy Week – she was good enough to scoop up the all-breeds title as well. Owned by Roger Perrett and his daughter Melissa at Kongwak in Victoria, Madge, as she is affectionately known, has continued to impress. She was purchased almost three years ago at the King’s Vale dispersal sale from David Anderson as an in-calf heifer and Roger and Melissa rightly tipped that she had good prospects.

“We liked her family history originating from the famous Denison Park Madges and being by the Show bull Guimo Joel, it was a perfect mating Type and Production,” Roger Thesaid.sire was Guimo Joel from Canada. “He’s had his ups and downs in his proofs but at the moment, in Canada and the US, he’s probably the number one sire for the show ring,” Roger “Weadded.have other Joel daughters and they have proven to be very good so we had confidence when we bought her. “She’s a very well-balanced cow with a beautiful udder, which the judgeFoleama Casino Silvermine

IDW is a busy time of year for the family and Erin in particular in her role as a professional fitter. This year they showed 23 cows from five different breeds, including 18 of their own Jersey and Ayrshire cows. Ferguson Farms was the most successful exhibitor of the Ayrshire Show and took home a total of seven banners, including some earned for Erin’s clients. Apart from preparing her own cows, Erin enjoys helping others to present their cattle in tip-top shape. “We now board quite a few cattle and prepare and fit other people’s cattle at different times throughout the year,” she said. The string of successes this year included multiple first, second and third places and a best udder title. “It’s always great to be rewarded for your hard work,” Erin said.

Just a week after the latest IDW success, she was scored EX95 –becoming the first cow to win back-toback titles and go 95 points.

“I won’t say she’s the best cow ever but the results are there to say she’s one of the best,” Brad said.

A New Dawn BRAD Gavenlock isn’t one for making big pronouncements and he’s not about to claim WINDY WAYS GALAXIES DAWN 7 is the best Jersey cow seen in Australia. But he will concede she’s “one of the best”, as her Excellent 95 ranking – only the third in living memory – and back-to-back International Dairy Week Grand Champion titles testify. She’s so good, he’d literally like to clone Windyher.Ways

“I had a phone call from Frank about showing at Dairy Week,” Brad said. “I just went to look through the herd, but the second I saw her as a fresh junior two the first thing I thought `wow’. The Kings Vale Joel Madge

The farm is a family operation milking more than 600 cows at close to a 50-50 split between both breeds, with Roger and his wife Helen joined by their son Tim and daughter-in-law Carley while Melissa is a veterinary nurse and helps in the business when she can. “Melissa has a passion for Jerseys and breeding and owning cows is her hobby,” Roger said. “She takes part in the breeding decisions and helps rear the calves and works on the farm on her days off. It’s good to have another Theyopinion.”both agreed that Madge had great “Wepotential.knew she was something special,” Roger said. “She had all the right attributes to do well, but it’s up to the judge at the end of the day…you still have to get past the winner’s post.”

The Australian Jersey Journal – March-April 2022 // 20 | IDW 2022 WRAP | commented on in the show ring,” he Thissaid. was Madge’s first time in the show after last year’s COVID disruptions.

The family has competed with success in both Holstein and Jersey sections at IDW but to win the all-breeds ribbon was a special thrill. “We show both breeds, this time it was the Jersey that won for us,” Roger said.

Galaxies Dawn 7 has won her class four times at Dairy Week, was intermediate champion once and was breed champion for the past two years.

“I’ve always said champions should never be compared, they should all be admired.” Brad isn’t sure which honour means the most. “The emotion of Dairy Week wins hands-down, but Dairy Week has a winner every year, you can go 10 years or more without getting a 95-point Dawncow.” was ranked 94 and 93 in previous years and Brad and his wife Jessica have owned several cows at 92 and some in North America that were 94 and 95 but “they’re not a patch on “GettingDawn” 95 is just starting to sink in,” he said. “Either way, it has been a big couple of weeks.” Brad realises his cow is now the top “Thedog. more you win, the bigger the target gets and the more pressure you get. I’m all for it. If someone else had a great cow, of course I’d want to beat EX95her.” is the highest ranking ever achieved in Australia. Shirlinn Icy Eve owned by the Wilson family was the first to go 95, followed by Wanstead Valentino Fernleaf owned by the Heath Bradfamily.says there’s no such thing as a perfect cow but he can’t think of anything he’d like to change on Dawn, who also won her six-year-old class and has never been beaten in any age class at any show. “For starters, she comes back every year. You can’t win a show if you’re not there. Her fertility and her ability to breed back have been second-to-none. “I’ve been fortunate to own a lot of good cows and work with a lot more good cows, but I’ve never owned or worked with a cow like this in “HopefullyAustralia. she’s not a once-in-alifetime, but if she is I’ll die a happy Bradperson.”knew the second her saw Dawn as a two-year-old on Frank Walsh’s Windy Ways farm in October 2018 that she was something special.

Madge won the 3.5 years in milk class and best udder and Intermediate Champion before going on to the all-breeds title. “When you’ve got five other judges backing your own Jersey judge, she must be half decent,” Roger said. Roger expects she will continue to improve. “We hope she’s back in calf now,” he said. “We’ll let her grow and develop out and hopefully she can get back again. “We would also like to thank the team at Cherrylock preparation they put the finishing touches on madge which made it a day to remember.”

Showing cows brought out Brad’s competitive edge, something he shares with co-owner Frank. “I always loved sport but was never great at it; this is my competition side coming out. I really strive for it; it’s like people want to win grand finals in football matches, but catching up with friends and like-minded people is also Bradunderrated.”worksfor AgriGene, focusing on marketing and bull selections and he says Australian Jerseys have the world at their feet. “I’m interested in breeding great cows for any market,” he said. “I don’t think anyone should be pigeonholed into breeding this cow or another, but I want to take Australian Jerseys to the world.”

Frank sold a half share in January and in April that year she won Supreme Champion at the Sydney Royal. Her pedigree has been traced back more than 100 years in Australia and New Zealand, mostly linked to the Elm Grove cow family. Her mother is an Excellent cow by Headline and is about to return to Brad and Jessica’s Cherrylock boarding, embryo, IVF and showing business at Tallygaroopna near Shepparton for more embryo work. Some full siblings to Dawn are being born later this year, along with daughters out of Dawn. After starting with a couple of bulls, she now has one daughter milking and another daughter has been sold. “We are doing more embryo and IVF work on her and in an ideal world, I want to clone Dawn and send one of her clones overseas. That’s the end goal: I’m going to achieve it; I don’t know when or how but I will make that happen.

Australian Jerseys are starting to make an impact in the biggest Jersey market, North “They’reAmerica.looking for outcrosses from a different genetic base. The US is screaming for cows with a bit more grunt, strength and capacity and we’ve definitely got that over North America,” Brad said. “We’ve got the purest of Jerseys and our cows seem to last longer.”

Brad met Jessica, originally from America, at a show and they farmed in Wisconsin before returning to “EverythingAustralia. we do we do together and we push each other,” Brad said. “Jessica does all the preparation; she’s the one who turns Dawn out looking a million bucks at every show.”

Brad’s interest in Jersey cows stems back to his youth when his father kept a couple of heifers on a hobby farm for exhibiting at calf shows. “I fell in love with it from there,” Brad said. A connection with the Wilson family solidified his interest, initially joining them at shows and eventually working on their farm. “They drove my passion; 95 per cent of what I know about cows I learnt of them.”

We are most proud of turning up to the best dairy show in the southern hemisphere, from either end of the state to prepare and show a team as a family with Mitchell, Lyndsey and Spencer (grain mixer). Particularly with four young milk cows never shown before. Mitchell and Brady fitted them so well as usual, and thanks to Spike and Charlie for “show time”! Our collective group of friends, partners and show hands were exceptional. Brenton, Ryan, Cally, Bec, Jaqueline, Amy, Heidi, Lucas, Elmar & Co, Glomar & Co, Geoff Parrish for set up, and others who led in the ring, all played an important role in what we consider was a very successful show. Four young cows never shown before’. We brought six head for 2 first, a second, 2 thirds and 2 best udders. HRM Dairies, a corporate dairy operation milking nearly 400 cows, has entered an exclusive partnership with Genetics Australia to distribute Australian genetics in the south-east Asian country. Hass predicts three-way crosses, including Jerseys, will be the way of the future for many Pakistani farmers, and that pure Jerseys will also have a role to “Pakistaniplay.farmers who can’t afford high-end barns go for Jersey-cross or pure Jersey because the Jersey is more resilient against heat, gets into calf quite easily and milk production is higher than the local breeds,” Hass “Aussiesays. Reds can work in crossbreeding as well. Three-way crosses could have a huge role to play in PakistanPakistan.”is dominated by milking buffaloes, producing high fat and protein percentages but very low volume, as well as Red Sindhi and HassSahiwal.says Australian cows have proven to be the best cattle for Pakistani conditions, and Australian semen would lift the local industry to the next HRMlevel. Dairies was established in 2017 and has gradually expanded from 180 to nearly 400 cows. It is a barn-based operation and Hass hopes to be milking 1000 by the end of 2024. His focus is on elite and genetically strong animals, something that hasn’t always been the case in Pakistan.

Pakistani Potential

AUSTRALIAN Jersey breeders shouldn’t neglect opportunities being offered by a potentially huge market in Pakistan for live cattle and That’sgenetics.the message from HRM Dairies CEO Mudassar `Hass’ Hassan who says Jerseys have attributes that would work in HassPakistan.isintroducing

“I took 180 Holstein cows in my first shipment to Pakistan and they had genetic strength but I wanted to maintain that level which was one the main reasons we got connected with Genetics Australia to continue improving the quality of the herd,” Hass said. “I’m a firm believer that Australian genetics work for Pakistan. We have similar weather, similar conditions, although maybe Pakistan is a bit more extreme with temperatures up to 50 “Thedegrees.way Australia has created and prepared their cattle means that if someday we had an index, it would be pretty close to the Australian BPI “Likesystem.Australia we want a stronger cow that has good feet and legs, an open chest, dairy strength, good mammary systems, are healthy and fertile and able to cope with hot and humid conditions. This gives the Australian Jersey breed an ideal opportunity.”

Jersey crosses in his Holstein herd and says other Pakistani farmers are doing the same.

About 90 per cent of cattle at corporate farms – usually considered the higher tier of Pakistani farms - are from Australia.

Hass says Jerseys have the attributes that will work in Pakistan “I’m a firm believer that Australian genetics work for Pakistan. We have similar weather, similar conditions, although maybe Pakistan is a bit more extreme with temperatures up to 50 degrees.”

HRM Dairies and Genetics Australia have combined for two shipments of genetics to Pakistan in late 2021 and more and larger shipments are planned this year. The partnership was officially launched in Pakistan on December 26, 2021, with Jersey Australia banners on display. Hass predicts the industry could grow immensely. “If I talk in dairy language, Pakistan is just at the weaning stage,” he “There’ssaid. a huge demand and supply difference. It’s a huge market but in Australia it is very underrated; Australia could do way more to capitalise on the potential market.”

Hass said many farmers in Pakistan didn’t realise Australian exported “Peoplesemen. thought Australia only imported genetics from the US or Europe to A.I. their cows,” he said. “We

Hass interviews Jersey Australia General Manager Glen Barrett.Hass explains to Jersey Australia President Lisa Broad that Australian Jerseys have potentially a huge market in Pakistan

Genetics Australia Export Manager Rob Derksen identified Pakistan as a country of interest for Australian dairy about five years ago. “We were looking for a distributor in Pakistan and we appointed two distributors, but both had little interest in genetic merit, they just wanted to focus on getting the cheapest possible product. We decided at the time to place greater emphasis on exporting genetics to other countries, particularly China as they were prepared to focus on better quality genetics and promote the Australian Breeding Value system.

“In less than five years China became our number one export market. In more recent years as the relationship between Beijing and Canberra deteriorated, we were unable to obtain import permits for China and decided to again look at options in Pakistan.

“Pakistan imported some Australia Jerseys heifers several years ago but the farmer feedback was that they were disappointed in their performance. With the promotion work being done by HRM, farmers in Pakistan are now recognising they need to access better quality higher genetic merit animals. First-cross animals with no known breeding will not perform anywhere near the level of higher genetic merit pure or cross bred Australian cows,” he said.

The Australian Jersey Journal – March-April 2022 // 30 have changed that now and people realise Australia is independent in terms of producing genetics.” Hass has created a huge social media following in Pakistan and also into in India and Bangladesh. His videos of interviews with Australian farmers, including Jersey breeders such as Broadlin, attract up to 100,000 views.

“This is the first time in Pakistan history that Australian genetics has come to Pakistan and we can show them the bull’s daughters performing in another country. It’s a showcase to farmers that it really works.”

Now working in partnership with Genetics Australia, Hass has broadened his perspective about cattle breeds. “I can’t really be streamlined solely to Holstein - every breed has different things to offer.”

But one thing that is essential is quality genetics tailored to fix on-farm HRMproblems.isthe only farm in Pakistan that does genomic testing. Genetics Australia and HRM are educating farmers to identify their problems and make selections accordingly. “We can find out where the issues are because we genomically test but other farmers can’t afford that so we analyse their breeding and data to understand where they stand in terms of fertility and health issues, then we speak to the GA team and suggest the right bulls.”

HRM is trying to educate Pakistani farmers that profit is not all about high milk production; it’s also about non production traits and controlling “Ifexpenses.yourcow is doing high production but breaking down with mastitis and taking four straws to get pregnant, you won’t be making that much profit,” Hass said. “If she’s producing 5-7000 litres and getting pregnant easily and not having health problems, she’s probably far more profitable. Last year almost 97 per cent of the HRM herd got pregnant, it had one of the lowest mortality rates and best production levels, successes partially attributed to Australian genetics, farm management and nutritional control.

Australian live export markets have been dominated by exports of Holstein cattle to China but Hass says Australian farmers need other options. “Anything can happen so Australia needs a second market,” he said. “Pakistan is now buying a lot of cattle from US and The Netherlands which is bad news for Australia. Australia needs to see Pakistan as their market – or at least a back-up market. There is huge potential but it has to be better genetic merit animals, not non-descript cows with poor breeding.”

After a chance meeting with Hass and his partners it quickly became obvious their focus was on wanting to breed better quality animals,” Mr Derksen said. “We decided to appoint HRM as our exclusive distributor and his dairy will become a showcase in Pakistan for Australian genetics. Other farmers can’t believe the high production better quality Australian cattle are Mrdoing.”Derksen said there was also great opportunity for Australian farmers to sell quality heifers to Pakistan.
