A

s I look forward to the AGM and Conference and catching up with the many members and enthusiasts from across the country later in this month, I have taken the time to have some poignant reflection on our retiring Board Members.

Chris McKenzie and Paul Lenehan have been thoughtful and proactive leaders of your Association and I thank them on behalf of all the staff for their leadership and direction. Chris has been a tremendous leader of the Association. Always prepared to listen to any view, argument and idea no matter how much it has challenge personal and Association positions and when convinced of whether there is a need to implement change or maintain the status quo, has been a key driver and supporter of changes that have been implemented to make the Association a better organisation for all. The structural and governance changes that we have implemented would not have occurred without Chris’s strong leadership and commitment. I also add my personal thanks to Chris. Your advice, guidance, encouragement and friendly ear has been most welcome and instrumental to my enjoyment and undertaking of my role. While wasting words is never a trait Paul will be known for, what Paul does say, is on point, always forward thinking, always with the Associations best interests in mind. Paul’s stewardship of the finance of the Association has been exemplary. Congratulations to both Paul and Chris on your time on the Board of Jersey Australia. You can step down with the knowledge the Association is a better organisation today than when you started. Kind Regards Glen Barrett GENERAL MANAGER Jersey Australia

Australia Has A New Top Jersey Herd A

USTRALIA has a new top Jersey herd after Brookbora Jerseys reached the number one spot in the April 2021 ABV release. It is the first time Brookbora Jerseys, owned by Robert and Sandra Bacon at Tennyson in northern Victoria, has claimed Australia’s number one title. Brookbora rose to the top with a BPI of 191, up 23 from the December 2020 proof where they were in third place. After several years in the top spot, Con and Michelle Glennen’s White Star Jerseys at Noorat in south-west Victoria slipped to number two herd, despite increasing their BPI by 6 to 176. John and Margaret Cockerell at Warrain Jerseys in Numurkah were also big movers, climbing to number three with their herd BPI rising 27 points to 166 BPI. A large proportion of their herd being genomic tested since December 2020 added to their figures. Robert Bacon said it was pleasing to reach the top during a time when the Jersey breed continues to improve. “I think Jerseys in general are getting better and more consistent,” he said. “We’ve been in the top handful for a few years and were top in the TWI before it ended and top for health traits, but this is our first time to top the BPI.” However, he can’t really explain the huge jump. “We don’t really know why,” he said. “We haven’t changed anything. Our aim has always been to breed commercially viable, consistent

cows with good confirmation, to enjoy milking them for a long time.” Mr Bacon has also spoken to previous top place holder Con Glennen. “Con was the first on the phone to congratulate us and said it couldn’t happen to a better herd,” he added. Brookbora Jerseys also entered four cows in the Sydney Royal Easter Show, winning all four classes highlighted by Interbreed Intermediate Supreme Champion BROOKBORA VALENTINO SWEET ELFA and Reserve Senior Jersey Champion BROOKBORA PGRS VALENTINO LOVELIES, coowned with Parrabel Genetics and Rockstar Cows. Warrain Jerseys has had individual cows in the top rankings but this is the first time the herd has been in the top three. Margaret Cockerell said a focus on health and appearance traits was complementing the herd’s strong production performance. “We’ve been sitting in the top 10 for a fair while but to suddenly jump up to number three was a bit of a surprise,” Mrs Cockerell said. “With assistance from Amy Wright who does our mating management, we pick bulls that we think are going to improve our herd. We’ve had high production years around 7000-7500 litres average so we’re now looking to improve parts of the cow’s appearance, feet and legs and udder,” she said.

“We expect a lot of milk out of the cows so we want to avoid them wearing out too quickly. The longer you can have her productive, the better the return. It’s not just about milk in the vat, it’s having a healthy cow capable of doing it.” The top young genomic heifer in the April ABV release was KINGS VILLE BELLA 66 with a BPI of 381. The MATT daughter is owned by Rob and Kerrie Anderson at Kings Ville Jerseys in Gippsland. Mr Anderson said KINGS VILLE BELLA 66 had a pedigree to match her BPI, making her marketable into the future. “She’s a young calf that is ranked highly with great potential and she’s from a cow family that already has a bull in A.I, KING VILLE BASHFUL - P,” Mr Anderson said. Mr Anderson’s daughter Holly had the number one ranked heifer KINGS VILLE HAHA BELLE 155 last year. MATT daughters dominate the top list with BROADLIN ILAGAY 3791 with a BPI of 370 from the stud of Lisa and Lynton Broad equal second with KINGS VILLE MATT ERAN, also from the Kings Ville Stud. Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett congratulated the Bacon family. “Reaching number one herd is a tremendous achievement that takes many years of committed breeding,” he said. “Be it the top Index herd, breeding quality bulls for AI programs or winning in the show ring, Brookbora is doing it all with distinction.” Mr Barrett also highlighted the influence of MATT, which was the number one proven bull. “MATT is certainly leaving his mark on the Australian Jersey cow,” he said. “His proof continues to get stronger as do the quality of his progeny.” MATT was the number one Proven Bull for the fifth time. Tim Weller from World Wide Sires Australia, which markets MATT, said his success wasn’t surprising considering his dominance of the proofs. “As more and more of his daughters get into more herds, the success they’re having at the top end of the BPI is very humbling and exciting,” Mr Weller said. What’s been happening around the grounds? Northern District Club Bus tour

SGJBC members Lynton, Lisa & Gavin Broad of Broadlin Jerseys, Keith & Wayne Kuhne of Bushlea Jerseys, Matt and Nicola Templeton of View Fort Jerseys and Darien and Alex Mathews of Langdale Jerseys welcomed a group from Northern Victoria during a bus tour in February. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the depth of Jerseys in the area. The Northern District Jersey Club President – Daniel Bacon reported ‘NDJBC would like to thank the South Gippsland Jersey Club for hosting our club for a great weekend of Jersey cows, outstanding hospitality and great people! We were very envious of the green grass and very thankful for the farms opening up your operations for us to look through. Every farm we went to should be proud of their awesome herds and farms’. The tour culminated in a great social evening where Lynton & Lisa Broad (pictured top right) were recognised for their commitment to the Northern District Jersey Club with a Life Membership being awarded. From all at the SGJBC – Congratulations.

Celebrating ‘75 Years of Bushlea’ book launch

We gathered at Bushlea on Friday 16th April to witness Keith & Pat Kuhne launch their incredible recollection of the journey of Bushlea from its initiation. The roll-up of members – past and present, as well as many distinguished Jersey and industry people were a testament to the impact this stud has had on the dairy industry in Australia. How fortunate we are as a club to have such inspiring peers and roll models – and we congratulate all at Bushlea, for the many many years of dedication to the Jersey cow. All active members in Australia will receive a copy of the book, courtesy of Bushlea.

Genomics Uncovers Surprises In The Bull Pen

Lyn Parish selects natural sires based on the genomic information for the traits wants to improve in the herd, instead of selecting a natural bull because he was ‘out of a good cow’.

W

HEN Lyn and David Parish (Dornoch Jerseys) decided to have their natural service bulls genomically tested, they never imagined unlocking an opportunity for their genetics to be marketed to a worldwide audience. Their main motivation was to use genomic ABVs of their natural sires to inform their breeding program. “By genomically testing our natural service bulls, we can treat them with the same scrutiny as when selecting our AI team,” Lyn said. “Genomic testing has helped us identify which bulls to keep, which bulls we may have overlooked, as well as those that don’t meet our breeding requirements.” When Lyn received the genomic results of their 2019-born bulls, she was surprised that one returned a BPI more than 40 points above his parent average ABV.

In the April 2021 ABV release, that bull – Dornoch Jetfight Pilot made it into the Jersey Good Bulls Guide as STGPilot with a BPI+266.

Lyn and David have been part of the Ginfo project for the past five years and were one of the early Australian Jersey herds to be genomically tested.

He has been purchased by ST Genetics, standing at the Total Livestock Genetics centre in Camperdown, with both sexed and conventional semen to be distributed throughout Australia and abroad.

Over the years the Parishes have seen a dramatic rise in the overall genetic merit of their herd, from a herd average BPI -39 in 2015, BPI +105 in 2021.

The Parishes milk about 600 registered Jerseys at Winchelsea, 40 km south-west of Geelong in Western Victoria. From July 2021, a neighbouring property will be taken on by Lyn and David’s daughters Jodie and Wendy, Jodie’s partner Will and Wendy’s husband Matt. The two businesses will share some equipment and resources, with Lyn and David sending a large group of cows to the new farm to get things started. The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 14

The herd currently ranks 53 in 294 milk recording Jersey herds for BPI in Australia. “The continued genetic improvement of our herd is very important to us,” Lyn said. “Since we began genotyping our cows and supplying data to the Ginfo program, it has given us something to reach for – to get among the top BPI herds with good productive cows that are structurally sound with great longevity.”

The Parishes use a corrective mating strategy. For the first round of AI, sexed Jersey semen is used over the maiden heifers and high genetic merit cows.

Lyn genotypes all heifer calves at birth, using the early data to make decisions on which heifers to keep and which to sell.

The remaining cows are bred to conventional AI while homebred natural bulls are used to mop-up the heifers at the completion of the AI service.

With the ABVs of genotyped natural sires comparable to those of an AI sire, Lyn no longer gives the AI heifers preferential selection when making her culling decisions.

Lyn selects natural sires based on the genomic information for the traits she requires, instead of selecting a natural bull because he was ‘out of a good cow’. Daughter fertility is becoming increasingly important. “We also emphasise overall type and udders as well as fat and protein. Components are really important.”

“The results have shown that some of our natural bred heifers are right up there with the AI heifers. Of our heifers due to enter the herd this year, the number 3 on the BPI list is the daughter of a homebred bull.”

Since introducing sexed semen in 2017, the Parishes have had a 60% increase in heifer replacements, allowing for greater selection pressure on animals coming into the herd. With surplus replacements, Lyn is now using genomics to identify the lower genetic merit cows to then cross to dairy beef.

Sired by the son of the Parishes number one BPI cow, Dornoch 4656 EX93, cow 5644 has returned a BPI(g) +285 with +109 Overall Mammary and +108 Survival. “Her sire (Dornoch Oliver 2044) was only used for a short period. He was sold before we started testing our bulls,” Lyn said. “If we had tested him, maybe we would have known how good he was and kept him a little longer.”

Rearing 15-20 bull calves each year, the Parishes retain three young bulls for their own use. The remaining bulls are sold at 18-20 months of age to local farms as natural service sires. When selecting her team of natural bulls, Lyn looks for the top rated BPI bulls, while examining the genetic merit of the dam, the dam’s Production Index (PI) and conformation, and the sire of the calf – prioritising alternative bloodlines. Apart from breeding and culling decisions, Lyn includes parentage identification as an important benefit of genomic testing natural bulls. “We run a natural bull with the heifers after we finish AI, and there are times we need to rest and rotate the bulls,” Lyn said. “There have been times when a calf is born during the cross-over period where the sire can be hard to determine. Now that our natural bulls have been genomically tested, we can easily identify the sires of the calves born.”

Youngest son Paul & Partner Bec, son in law Jim, Janelle, daughter Wendy, son Shane and grandson Jack in front of the cattle pavilion named after Neville. (inset right) Neville and Janelle photographed at a friend’s wedding in 2019.

Naming Honour At Neville’s ‘Second Home’ T

HE Kyabram Showgrounds have always been like a second home for Neville and Janelle McDonald.

March 13 with the official naming of the shed and the presentation of a 50year stud award from Jersey Australia.

Now Neville’s name has been enshrined at the showgrounds with the cattle shed being named in his honour.

While disappointed Neville – or “Nifty” as he was commonly known never got to enjoy the accolades in person, Janelle knows he would have been rapt.

Neville was a stalwart of the show society and an annual exhibitor of his Jersey cows for more than 40 years until his sudden death last year. Janelle is continuing the traditions as society secretary and she also plans to return this year as an exhibitor after the COVID-forced hiatus of 2020. Their Sunshine Farm Jerseys has just notched up 50 years and Janelle has no plans to finish just yet. Neville’s contribution to Jerseys and the show society was honoured on

“Showing has been our life, it has been an amazing time,” she said. “We worked our butts off for the show society; it was our second home.” Neville grew up on his family farm at Ruthven near Lismore in northern New South Wales and started the Sunshine Farm Jersey stud just before he turned 17 in July 1971. The name originated from the cream boat – Sunshine 2 - that went up the The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 16

nearby river and picked up cream from the farms. Neville was already known to everyone as Nifty when he met Janelle in 1978. They married in 1980 and moved to Kyabram and share farmed before buying their own farm in 1991. “When we moved to Victoria, we had some black and whites and all sorts, but we cut out all the others and ended up 100 per cent Jerseys,” Janelle said. “Everything we own is in the stud. They pay their way and they’re good cattle. They’re all beautifully natured and have a personality of their own. They speak for themselves really.” The stud has achieved great local success over the years and Neville and Janelle were rightly proud when they

finished paying off their farm about four years ago. “That was a big thing. It was an epic achievement to own our own farm and it was a very nice feeling,” Janelle said. It didn’t take long for the fledgling stud to find show success. Neville’s first champion was a heifer he bought off his brother in 1975. A photo of that occasion always raises a giggle. “Back then they wore dustcoats but it was a really muddy day and he’d taken his long pants and boots off and was walking around barefoot in the mud. It looks like he’s got a skirt on,” Janelle said.

“Dorothy 8 was trapped under the back of the truck and they had to lift it off her. That’s the only time I’ve seen a cow cry. That was really hard.” Their show bulls broke the holder on their nose rings and escaped but were later caught and returned. Neville and their two sons had only minor injuries and the cows recovered to compete the following weekend at Kyabram. “Some were sore but they got there and did their job and Dorothy

won a ribbon,” Janelle said. Neville was a life member and on the Kyabram Show Society for more than 30 years from 1984, including seven years as president, and Janelle has been secretary for more than 10 years. Over 41 years, Neville never missed showing at Kyabram. His funeral was at the showground, right in front of the shed that now carries his name.

That ribbon was the first of many. “We’ve won thousands of ribbons over the years,” Janelle said. The most recent champion was in 2019 when Sunshine Farm Cherry 133 won four championships in three weeks in the Goulburn Valley region, including inter-breed titles. “She is one of the best cows we’ve had but we had a lot of success with some embryo transfers back in the 90s and probably our best cow was Sunshine Farm Dorothy 8,” Janelle said. “She won all over the Goulburn Valley and in Melbourne. I couldn’t tell you how many inter-breed and championship ribbons she won.” While enjoying showing success, Neville judged all over Australia and many times in New Zealand, creating lasting friendships and memories.

(above) Neville with muddy feet and Gemland Glenda 1975. (below) Neville at the halter with Cherry 133, the all-breeds champion at Numurkah in 2019.

“I remember the first show I went with him where he judged when he was up in Lismore, was at Bellingen. That was my first experience of the shows. We’ve been everywhere for judging. It has given us a great life, travelling around and meeting different people. “With Jerseys, you’ve got friends all over the country. We’ve done six or seven trips to New Zealand and it’s like going home to family. It’s beautiful over there.” Showing was Neville’s main interest and enjoyment but it didn’t always go to plan. “One year in the mid-90s he was coming home from Shepparton when one of the wheel hubs shattered and he rolled the truck with our good cows on it,” Janelle said.

The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 17

Farm walk 50 anniversary (right) Janelle with 50th anniversary cake made by their son Paul.

“It was absolutely beautiful to have it named in his honour,” Janelle said. “It was a very emotional day. We did the naming in the morning and then came back here and had a celebration for the 50 years, which was another great achievement he had been looking forward to. “Jersey Australia chairman Chris MacKenzie presented the 50-year certificate to me and I was really honoured that Chris came up to do that.” Neville was 66 when he suffered a heart attack in the middle of the night on July 3 last year. “Until then he was

100 per cent healthy; no-one expected it,” Janelle said. In adversity, community spirit always shines through and Janelle says the support has been overwhelming since Neville’s death. “I’d like to thank all Jersey breeders for their love and support over the past 12 months. Community support has been absolutely amazing, and the show society has also supported me so much.” With the help of a young employee, Janelle plans to continue running the farm and stud for the foreseeable future.

Looking good… a group of heifers from Sunshine Farm Jerseys.

The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 18

“The farm is looking good and my worker is doing a great job,” she said. “I grew up on a dairy farm so I don’t know any different; I’ve done it all my life. I’d hate to live in town.” Janelle is now hard at work for the stud and in her role as show secretary. “The show will be back again this year after we had to miss last year because of COVID, like everybody else, and I plan to show again,” she said. “We’re working on it now and we want to make the cattle section pretty special this year.”

With 25 Ha leased for dry cows and fodder conservation. Milking herd size Ranges from 190 – 210 with the short term aim of milking 130-150 all A22. Most significant stud achievements • Many highest pointed cows in both the Central and South Gippsland On Farm Challenges. 26 Great Southern Challenge finalists. • Supreme Champion Cow 2008 Great Southern Challenge. Champion 5yr old Great Southern and Great Australian Challenge 2015. Reserve Champ 2yr old 2008, Reserve Champ 4yr old 2010. • Holding a record breaking sale in 2012 was a huge thrill. Prominent cow families in herd Melanie, Melaine, Melys, Marie, Belle, Bellis, Madge. Prominent sires used Lester, Jace, BWParade, Action, Valentino, CSCMelvara, Tbone, Oliver-P. Stud Overview • We have been members of the Central Gippsland Jersey Club for many many years and made a large number of great lifelong friends along the way. Breeding jerseys is in our blood. As the industry has evolved we have tried to move forward with it. For the last 4 years we have been supplying our milk to a local and farmer owned company called Gippsland Jersey. • This has proven most rewarding both mentally and financially. We are focussing heavily on breeding cows that are as balanced as possible in every way. Above average production with high type, longevity and farmer friendly traits. • We sell a lot of our stock to other breeders and hope to always sell an animal that will do well in any management system they enter and enhance the breed. Over recent years it has been very pleasing to have some sires enter into AI and receive proofs. At present we have 2 very highly ranked genomic sires being Pickle and Pickett. Our aim is to breed a full A22 herd with a focus on increasing the number of polled animals as well.

Milking herd size We try to keep it under 200. Most significant stud achievements In 10 years getting a herd of cows that we enjoy working with. • Placing in the On Farm Challenge • Having 92 point cows in the herd • 22 Heifers average score last spring of 85.77 points

Prominent cow families in herd Belle, Babe , Shirley (from a maternal at sister of Vanessa) Fernleaf, Mellow, Buttercup Gr Family, Sarina (from Araluen), Daisy, Melys, Melanie (recently) Prominent sires used Elton, Vanahlem, Valentino and recently Matt (first calves last year). Stud Overview • 2008 was the year in which together Annie and myself bought a small grazing property that was equipped with a disused dairy. • After relief milking for Merv York for a couple of years and using an existing 60 acres we owned and selling half to finance the purchase, we bought cows where ever possible with a line of 48 grades that came from Stan Bruhns Which we genetically racovered. Several of these made 90 -91 points. • The Mellow’s were one of our first purchases Via Bruce Hills dispersals and would be our most dominate family • Last year we leased a farm up the road and cut most of our silage on it and the other out blocks which gave us more scope grazing the home farm. • Last year we put stall gates in the shed and installed an automatic calf feeder which has made the calf feeding job easier. • We also employed a helper Tom has been a great help around the farm.

DAIRY’S FINEST SALE

J

ERSEY Australia’s debut Dairy’s Finest auction on Monday May 24 will mark a couple of firsts for Rob and Kerrie Anderson and their Kings Ville stud. With 27 lots likely to be sold, Kings Ville at Drouin West will host the auction, even though the animals won’t be there in the flesh. While Kings Ville will be contributing two lots to the auction, all 27 from different studs will be online

“It’s a first for us to host a multivendor sale on our property and our first online auction,” Rob said.

Member Name Trevor Saunders & Anthea Day

The virtual sale became a necessity due to COVID-19 but Rob is confident it will be a success.

Membership Number(s) V010850 V00748

“The catalogue is being prepared at the moment and at this stage there will be 27 lots,” Rob said.

Prefix(es) Araluen Park and Stonyrun Aus Member since Anthea since 1983 – Trev since 1987

Despite the lack of live animals, auctioneer Brian Leslie from Dairy Livestock Services will be there in person and the lots will be displayed on screens.

Farm Size – hectare Farm 1:- 383 hectares Farm 2:- 243 hectares

The sale starts at 1pm and will be under the same principle as a normal auction. “People can access the lots remotely so you don’t have to be onsite to bid through an agent or personally, but the auction process itself will be live,” Rob said.

Milking herd size Farm 1 :- 650 Farm 2 :- 500

“The idea is to still have an auction atmosphere and to get people together and engaged. It’s a great way to start the program.

Most significant stud achievements • 7 No 1 Genomic Heifers • 10 bulls into AI • 3 Great Southern Champions • 1 Great Australian Champion Prominent cow families in herd Sandra, Posh, Mary Sue, Kava, Flower, Bambi, Sherry, Daydream, Princess, Molly, Naomi, Petunia, Iris, Cleo, Madge, Pixy, Impish, Mayday, Buttercup, Faith, Violet Prominent sires used Brook, Montana, Vanahlem, Tbone, Valentino, - all brilliant bulls in our herd. Stud Overview • Anthea & Trev started Araluen Park in 2004 by combining our individual studs. • We are a Ginfo herd, committed to 100% AI, herdtesting, classifying 2 year olds and whole herd genomic testing. • We have been heavily involved with Jersey organisations in that time culminating in extensive overseas travel with our involvement with the WJCB • Our Jerseys have been wonderful to us.

“It’s too early to gauge potential numbers but we’re hoping for 100 on site which will be COVID safe and on-farm in the open air.” People are also encouraged to attend before the auction to look through the Kings Ville herd. Kings Ville is consigning two lots to the auction, a young calf and an in-milk two-year-old and Rob expects a topquality catalogue. “Vendors have put up some of their best, which is good, and there is variety that will meet most people’s taste; whether you’re looking for something to show, something with index or leading cow families from around Australia and the world. “There’s a nice mix and cross-section across the catalogue.” Rob is confident there will be strong interest. “Looking at recent auctions, things look buoyant. Agriculture and the dairy industry are trending up, so that’s positive, and Victoria has had a good start to the autumn,” he said.

NEW STYLE, TOP QUALITY

JERSEY’S FINEST… AND THAT’S A FACT

T

HE facts speak for themselves in the Dairy’s Finest showcase sale catalogue.

The 26 lots are studded with stars; animals selling to 403 BPI, dams of lots classified to Excellent 94, daughters backed by 17 generations of Excellent and animals out of Great Southern champions paint a clear picture of the quality on offer. Co-organiser Reece Attenborough says people will find good reading in the catalogue. “We wanted at least 25 lots so we’re happy to get over that and really happy the quality is so impressive,” Reece said. “Some of the country’s best studs are putting in consignments from some of the best cow families from Australia and around the world. “We’re over the moon with the consignments. You shoot for the top in trying to get their best and if they haven’t given us the very best, it’s not far off.”

D

LS auctioneer Brian Leslie has been conducting Jersey Australia’s auctions since they started – but he’s never done one like the 2021 version and he’s never seen a catalogue to top this one. Instead of live cattle at the auction venue, the cows will be seen on video screens, but Brian promises a live auction with the traditional trimmings and a great selection of cows. “It’s a very good catalogue,” Brian said. “It’s diverse and some of the best cow families in the world are represented.” “We’ve got lots out of cows classified to Excellent 94, out of major show champions and we’ve even got a pick of the whole herd. It’s an extremely balanced catalogue and I think the vendors have really put their best forward.” Brian says the quality and pedigrees will appeal to buyers. “It’s rare that you would see a catalogue in the Jersey breed any better than this. I’ve done every auction Jersey Australia has held, and this stacks up as good as any.”

Prominent international families include Duncan Belle, The ‘F family and Circus.

Brian also likes the virtual concept, saying that it’s easier for sellers and just as good for buyers. “It’s a really good concept for a sale connected to an annual meeting that could be used anywhere,” he said. “It gives people the opportunity to enter without having to transport the cattle backwards and forwards.”

Reece expects the quality of the line-up and follow-up program will satisfy farmers’ pent-up interest.

“The advent of COVID bought it on, but I see it as a great opportunity going forward.”

“Given that we’ve had COVID putting so many things on hold in recent times, I’d imagine there’s going to be a good crowd.

Brian said the cattle would be well represented with all their information and images available to potential buyers.

Some of the prominent Australian cow families include Fernleaf, Babe, Illusion, Melaine, Love Lies and Bonita.

“The quality of the line-up for the sale and the itinerary we’ve put together for the week should entice people to attend.”

“I think it’s a win for both buyer and seller. I’ll still do a live auction and we will have the cattle on the screen but sellers are able to leave their animals on their farms so they only have to transport them farm-to-farm, not to the sale arena.”

Reece hopes the auction will be a success and an ongoing drawcard for the annual Jersey Australia AGM and conference program.

The auction will be live-streamed through Elite Livestock so those who can’t be at the actual sale can follow it from home.

“We will have the consignments photos and footage on the big screen for those in attendance as well as on line bidding for people unable to attend on the day,” he said.

Brian praised Jersey Australia for advancing the concept and pushing ahead with the annual meeting, showcase sale and local tours.

“This concept can be taken anywhere in the country and as locations of the Jersey Australia AGM change year after year, this type of sale can work anywhere.”

“I think it’s easy to lie down and do nothing in times like we’ve been through, but they’re going ahead and organising the sale and annual meeting and conference tour and should be commended for that. “I think it’s a real positive for the breed.”

Pleasant Nook F Prize Circus EX 97

NOTHING BUT THE BEST Lachlan Fry looked at the pedigrees and around his family farm in Western Australia to find something that fits the bill for the Dairy’s Finest showcase sale. The chosen heifer, Katandra Park Bontino Dream, ET, is from the Damaris cow family and Lachlan says it lives up to its strong pedigree. “If you’re going to consign to a sale like this, there’s no point putting in anything other than your best,” he said. “That’s always the attitude we’ve taken on these sales and it’s the same here. “We’ve had a lot of success with this family in Western Australia.” She is by Bontino and is preg-tested in calf to the service of CHROME using sexed semen, adding to her appeal. Katandra Park Bontino Dream, ET, was born in August 2019 and will calve in the first week of September. “She’s in-calf to sexed semen and could be a nice junior two-year-old for the spring,” Lachlan said. “She’s pretty much the best we can offer in terms of pedigree from this family.” Her dam scored 93 and previous dams 90 and 92. And while the pedigree is strong, a visual review is just as appealing. “She looks really nice underneath,” Lachlan said. Lachlan farms at Brunswick Junction about 160km south of Perth, milking 140 cows under the Katandra Park prefix, with a 50-50 spilt of Jerseys and Holsteins. However, distance won’t be a problem with the virtual showcase sale with Lachlan offering a freight subsidy to the eastern states.

Diamond Hill HV VIP Felice is the result of a new partnership between Mark Mangold and Jason Hayes.

Diamond Hill HV VIP Felice comes with good bloodlines. Mark has put together some well-known families like Veronica, Rumours, and Felice from the F-Family, famous for having a trio of 95-point sisters. “This one comes from arguably the best-brood cow out of them, Beretta Felice,” Jason said. “She’s got great confirmation, hard-topped, deep open rib, and as far as you can tell for a young heifer, she looks very promising underneath. “The family is tried and tested with a lot of high scoring females.” She was born August 23 last year. “We have high hopes she will do well for the eventual purchaser,” Jason added.

PHYSICALS MATCH PEDIGREES

DEBUT PARTNERSHIP The fruits of Jason Hayes and Mark Mangold’s first partnership will be on display at Dairy’s Finest showcase sale. Mark, from Diamond Hill Jerseys in New South Wales, and Jason, from Sonic Bovine Reproduction, have joined forces for the first time and Diamond Hill HV VIP Felice is the result. Diamond Hill HV VIP Felice is one of about six animals produced from their fledgling syndicate, and Jason has high hopes for success. “Mark has done well to piece together some really good families since he started and I’ve picked up a few skills along my journey of bovine reproduction and can implant embryos,” Jason said.

Rohan Sprunt wanted to be sure the calves he’s offering in the Dairy’s Finest showcase sale live up to their pedigree and profile. “We are offering as deep a pedigree as we can offer and high-profile cows, but I also physically inspected the animals and decided they were good enough to go,” he said. “They are physically a good representation of their pedigree.” Rohan was happy to offer some of his best for the sale and is pleased to see the auction return as an attraction connected to the AGM. Rohan hosted the AGM sale in 2018, something he admits was a mammoth task, and he’s confident the new virtual form will be a success.

“Mark had a few embryos sitting in the tank, but no recipients and I had a few recipients and the skills he needed, so we struck up a deal and decided to try to make it work for both of us.

The two young females offered by Rohan’s Kaarooma stud at Kaarimba in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley stem from the Nellie and Babe cow families.

“We’ve got about half a dozen animals on the ground at the moment. It was a good way for Mark to get some embryos implanted and get a bit of a return and for me to start some new families as well.”

Last spring her mother was champion cow in the local on-farm challenge as a nine-year-old and she has recently re-calved nearing her 10th birthday.

The Nellie heifer by Vanahlem was born in April 2020.

PICK OF THE HERD Anthea Day and Trevor Saunders are opening their herd for Jersey Australia’s Dairy’s Finest showcase sale, letting buyers take their favourite pick. In an offering sure to attract great interest, buyers will have the opportunity to bid for the entire Araluen Park and Stonyrun Aus prefixed females aged up to 48 months on sale day. The options are bountiful, with about 700 to choose from in prominent families with histories of great breeding and showing success. Anthea explains that the “pick of the herd” idea came up after they were committed to providing a lot but wanted to do something different.

Kaarmona Valentino Babe 285, EX91 (max)

“That’s the beauty of the Nellie family, they’re really consistent and we keep getting good calves out of them,” Rohan said. Her mother is third generation Excellent and consistently in Kaarooma’s on-farm challenge team. She won the aged cow class and was champion cow in the 2020 on-farm challenge and was third in her age class in 2019. The third dam was also consistently in the farm’s on-farm challenge team. The fourth dam was embryos purchased at a Jersey showcase sale and was a pin-up girl for her sire Beretta, with her photo being used all around the world to promote the sire. Her mother is ECLIPSE NELLIE 14, seven out of eight generations Excellent, reflecting the deep standing of the cow family. The other consignment is from the BABE family and is a daughter of DECADE, a polled bull from Semex. DECADE BABE was born in August last year and Rohan says her mother is probably the best Jersey on his farm. She went maximum 88 points as a two-year-old while she produced 8467 litres of milk, a record for a Kaarooma Jersey milk heifer. She went maximum 91 on her second calf and is regularly in the stud’s on-farm challenge team, coming third in the two-year-old local Goulburn Murray Jersey Breeders club in 2019 and winning the three-year-old class in 2020. Her younger full sister won the two-year-old challenge in the same event.

With a smorgasbord of options, Anthea said the successful buyer will be able to visit the farm to choose and will have access to the studs’ breeding details and family histories. “It will depend on what they would like; we’re happy for people to look through all the information and to spend as much time as they need to look and pick what they want,” she said. Araluen Park and Stonyrun Aus have had great success over the years with many notable traditional Jersey cow families. Three times they’ve had the Great Southern Champion, including one All Australian champion, seven former number one genome heifers, one of their cows has just gone over 400 BPI, they have a daughter and grand-daughters available out of a 94-point cow, and they have cows with 15 generations excellent behind them. They have 260 cows on the elite genome tested female list, about 10 per cent of the total list, 25 females available with a BPI over 300 and their top 10 have BPIs from 330 to 403 and are all eligible. Everything in the group and most of their dams are genome tested. Some of their successful families include Kava, Flower, Mary Sue, Faith, Sandra, Posh, Daydream plus many more. Anthea admits she has no idea what price to expect for the pick of the herd offer, but she will have no regrets, no matter what cow the winner chooses.

Her second dam VANAHLEM BABE 200 was scored Excellent 93, Kaarooma’s equal highest scored cow.

“It’s the first time we’ve done this and we wouldn’t have been able to do it if it wasn’t a virtual auction, and we hope it creates a lot of interest,” she said. “The animal chosen will no doubt cause us great pain to part with, but we want to offer our very best.”

She has been in the on-farm challenge every year and won the five-year-old and was overall champion cow for the local club in 2017, and third in the Great Southern Challenge.

SAD TO SAY GOODBYE

The fifth dam, KAARMONA LESTER BABE, was also 93 points and won her class many times at International Dairy Week and was honourable mention at IDW in 2005. The dam of this calf, KAARMONA VALENTINO BABE 285, is three out of five generations excellent.

Roger Heath admits that choosing his contribution to the Dairy’s Finest showcase sale was a tough decision. He has no doubt this is the best heifer he has offered for sale, and while he’s looking forward to attracting a good price, he’s also going to be sad to see her go.

Stepping Back But Staying Interested A

T his first meeting of the former Victorian Jersey Society committee back in 2004, Chris MacKenzie was asked “what do you think we need to do?” His answer was “research and development” and he’s pleased to report as he prepares to leave the Jersey Australia presidency that there has been great progress in that time – even though there’s still a lot to do.

Wanstead Sandstorm Fernleaf (photo: Andrew Cullen)

The fourth generation Bookaar farmer, whose family has been on the land for 95 years, has high hopes for WANSTEAD SANDSTORM FERNLEAF. “We certainly hope she makes plenty of money and goes to a good home because she’s pretty special,” Roger said. “She has good breeding behind her and she’s a good heifer in her own right with a lovely nature. “It will be sad to see her go but I’ve always been of the motto that if you’re going to sell something, you might as well sell something at the top end of your herd. “She’s the best we’ve got to sell at the moment. I have no trouble saying this is the best animal we’ve ever put on open auction.” The Fernleaf family dates back to the Bushlea Jersey Stud, which has a 75-year history and recently set an Australasian record price for a Jersey cow. Roger describes her dam, WANSTEAD VALENTINO FERNLEAF, as the best cow he’s had on the farm. She’s classified Excellent 93, while the grand dam BUSHLEAF ACTION T FERNLEAF 5 is classified Excellent 92. “She’s a cow we purchased at Bushlea several years ago and she has been breeding quite nicely for us,” Roger said. WANSTEAD SANDSTORM FERNLEAF won the S.T. Genetics youth show champion Jersey and was recently fourth in a big class at the Warragul Fair. “She has very good confirmation. We breed for production and the good type hopefully comes along and that’s happened here.” Roger is a big supporter of the Jersey Australia sale and has contributed in the past. “We don’t sell animals of this calibre very often – actually we haven’t sold one this good before. It was a hard decision to put her in the sale … she’s very special but we’ve been strong supporters of the Jersey Australia sales and will continue to be.” The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 37

“That question bowled me over a bit but I came home and thought about it and there was very little in the area of research and development,” he said. “I thought we needed to be out there trying to get as much as we can through industry research areas and so I said that at the next meeting and they said you do it. “The board was very encouraging and we’ve gone a long way but I think we’re just starting. Research and development need to continue as a priority. There’s still more that we can gain and I hope we can get more research stations to take on Jersey cows.” Chris has no doubt that the Jersey cow has a bright future. “Scientists are trying to develop a black and white cow that’s like a Jersey and is as efficient as a Jersey but we need to keep pushing for our efficiencies and for products that can be developed from the Jersey cow to add value from the manufacturing perspective and the nutritional side of things.” Chris progressed from the Victorian committee to the newly formed Jersey Australia Board when it was formed in 2008 and has been president for the past four years. Now, as the last remaining inaugural JA Board member, he has decided to call time. At the AGM in May, he will be standing down as president and as Board member. “I’ve had a fair stint and I think it’s time to step back and let others have an opportunity to step up,” he said. “When I was re-elected last time, I said it would be my last term. I think it’s best to be a clean break and allow the others to grow and develop their leadership and not have to worry about a past president sitting on the Board.” Jersey Australia reduced the Board from 10 to nine last year and this year it goes back to a maximum of eight. “I think it can be just as efficient in the decision making. We’ve made improvements in governance and efficiencies and how we operate as a Board,” Chris said. Continued on page 38 ...

| FEATURE | Stepping Back But Staying Interested. ... Continued from page 37 He describes the shift to a national organisation as a highlight of his time with the organisation. “Moving into Jersey Australia was a great move; the industry acceptance was overwhelming and we’ve progressed and consolidated and pushed for better governance and awareness of issues we hadn’t addressed before,” he said. “Board members have seen the challenges and taken them on. I take great comfort in the progressive attitude of Board members and their willingness to adapt to the challenges that we’ve come across.” Chris says the creation of sub-committees will help the Board to advance and promote the Jersey cow. “We have an efficient cow that is good for the future and can mix in with other breeds and still be extremely efficient in all circumstances.” Jersey Australia commitments have been a big part of his life. “I’ve been able to do it because of family support here on the farm but everyone is a lot older now. For so many years I’ve been going down to Melbourne up to nine times a year for meetings, although COVID changed that over the past year. It has become part of my life in many ways but you have to move on. “There have been times you feel there is great reward but the pendulum swings and covers all spectrums. The people are the beauty of it. It’s an organisation made up of members and you see their reaction whether they agree or disagree with you.” At 65 Chris has no plans to stop farming. “There are things I still want to accomplish in breeding cows,” he said. “We thought by the time we got to 60 we could slow down but the way the industry has gone that didn’t happen. I’m busier than ever but there are a few more years in us yet on the farm.” His Jireh Jerseys stud combines with his father Alec’s Coorievale stud, with about 200 milkers. “I still aim to breed the ultimate cow and a herd that is satisfying in type, production and reproduction. I’m pretty pleased with the way the herd is going.” In the Great Southern Challenge, Chris’s Jireh Ares Sunbeam is the reigning champion and Great Australian four-year-old winner. “Those awards are not easy to come by and it’s a great feeling,” he said. Although stepping back from his formal roles, Chris will continue to follow the fortunes of Jersey Australia and the breed and he will be at this year’s AGM for the handover. “The AGMs around Australia, even though unfortunately we didn’t get to Queensland last year, have allowed me to see that wherever you go there are great cows,” he said. “Sometimes we get quite surprised by what is in the area and you go away uplifted from those experiences. It has been my life’s passion.”

Australian Jerseys Have A Lot To Offer A

USTRALIAN Jerseys are attracting widespread interest locally and internationally but the success may be only scratching the surface. Genetics Australia’s export manager Rob Derksen says the Australian Jersey has a strong reputation in many counties, built on the back of international visitors who have visited Jersey herds in Australia or IDW or on the actual performance of milking daughters in many countries. “The Jersey’s ability to adapt to a wide range of management systems and climatic conditions will see its appeal only grow stronger as adoption of genomics in both males and females gains pace,” Rob said. “In my view, we’ve only just scratched the surface. The number of countries where we have yet to export Australian Jersey genetics is significant, and the next five or more years will be both exciting and satisfying to see the growth in Australian Jerseys”. With the release of the April 2021 ABVs, the GA Jersey 2021 team will have widespread appeal overseas and within Australia. The team is stronger than ever and it’s no surprise that the best bulls come from the best herds and the best cow families. All of the bulls in the 2021 Jersey team come from the Top 20 ABV herds. The number one herd Brookbora Jerseys, owned by the Bacon family at Tennyson in Northern Victoria, bred popular Brookbora Valentino ASKN. Interest in North America, Europe, NZ and South Africa as they see images of the milking daughters is extremely strong and he will remain in short supply for 2021 as demand for both conventional and sexed semen grows. Now with 69 milking daughters and a BPI of 285 and 110 for both type and mammary, he is the real deal and a world class sire from one of the finest Jersey herds around. As daughters have an impact in future years in milking herds and at major shows here and overseas, his popularity will only continue to grow. Another Brookbora bull BORUNG (307 BPIg), by Malachi from a daughter of ASKN is growing in popularity with a wellbalanced ABV across the board. Wallacedale Jerseys, owned by the Wallace family of Poowong North, has delivered another new bull to the 2021 lineup. PICKLE Pixstar P x Lemonhead and 381 BPIg is a high-ranking bull that will prove popular. The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 38

The Sprunt family of Kaarimba has achieved what no other breeder has done by having both their Jersey herd and Holstein herds rank in the top 10 on BPI. New Kaarmona Jersey TRECKER Matt x Raceway is an impressive 372 BPIg placing him in the top 1%, and he leads the team with an equally impressive 112 for Mastitis Resistance, also a top 1% ABV. New heterozygous polled bulls BEDFORD Bashful P x Volcano at 303 BPIg, from Robert and Kerrie Anderson’s Kings Ville Jerseys at Drouin West and POLLHERO P 280 BPIg Matt x Oliver P from the Broad family’s Broadlin Jerseys at Wonthaggi will also have appeal in Australia and Europe where polled Jerseys are growing in popularity. Both bulls come from deep proven cow families and their high ABVg is complemented by both offering A22. The new bulls join a strong group of both genomic and daughter proven Jerseys. Of the top 10 genomic Jerseys sires in April, six were available from GA.

ALGERNON is Australia’s highest daughter Proven Jersey at 281 BPI and 111 for Mammary.

For those seeking the surety of adding daughter proven bulls to their sire selection there are more options now available. VALENBLAST Valentino x Sandblast at 333 leads the way with 52 milking daughters but not yet at publishable levels to be listed on the top ABV list. ASKN also falls into the non-publishable list at 285 BPI, as does DOUGGAN at 393 BPI with just nine milking daughters to date, while the title of the highest Australian daughter proven Jersey goes to ALGERNON Navarian x Raceway at 281 BPI with 162 milking daughters and 111 for mammary. VALIN Valentino x Navara closely follows at 272 BPI and 105 for mammary now with 343 milking daughters. Early reports on milking daughters of INVINCIBLE Hatman x Valentino are very positive and at 326 BPIg and 114 for mammary he is expected to add more daughters in future years.

Broadlin Vanessa 2950 EX90, ALGERONs much admired Dam.

Old favourites TAHBILK 245 BPI and the internationally-acclaimed AUSSIEGOLD 235 BPI both offer 99% reliable ABVs. With 90 milking daughters and a BPI of 219 CASPIAN Axis x Legion, has a ‘no holes’ ABV and is a value for money bull. The influence of Jersey bulls available through GA is further highlighted by the inclusion of US Jersey sires VALENTINO 7J1038 294 BPI and 113 for mammary and OLIVER P 7J1219, 264 BPI and 112 for mammary. The influence of these two breed greats is significant throughout the Jersey world and through Genetics Australia’s alliance with WWS these two bulls have made a positive contribution to Jersey herds around Australia. The 2021 Genetics Australia Sire Catalogue contains more information plus details on other bulls or visit www.genaust.au for more information.

Missing Opportunities J

ERSEY farmers not seriously looking at the beef-on-dairy market risk being left behind, according to a leading player in the supply chain. However, Cameron Renshaw from Calf Link says farmers need to do it right to make sure they don’t encounter the same problems that have beset overseas markets. Cameron says the economics, demand from consumers and animal welfare issues will force dairy farmers to look at beef options. “I’m confident that the product can find a market if done correctly,” he said. “Anybody running a dairy operation that hasn’t had a mature conversation around a beef-on-dairy program has fallen behind.” Calf Link is working in the supply chain of product development for beef-

on-dairy programs. “We see that a bottle-neck for the industry to address terminal-cross calves on any scale is the ability to rear the calf from a week of age to the point that it is suitable for backgrounders and feed-lotters,” Cameron said.

The commercial calf rearing service is offered in NSW, Victoria and South Australia from a base at Elmore in central Victoria that can handle up to 5500 head each year, with potential to add new sites as the industry grows.

It developed out of Heifer Link, a heifer agistment operation.

will continue to push for something to be done about that.”

“We were seeing there was a lot of wastage for our clients with nonreplacement animals and in around 2016 we started the change to just using angus mop-up bulls,” Cameron said.

Cameron adds that Jersey farmers have additional challenges because of the size of the cows.

With two investors, Cameron put together the Calf Link model. “We felt there needed to be a commercial solution to calf rearing. We hadn’t really seen that successfully done in Australia on a large scale.” Cameron has little doubt that beefon-dairy will grow. “The economics behind it will force the industry to make these decisions,” he said. “If the economics don’t force the industry to make the decision, consumers will. What we’ve seen globally, just about every major western market has a very active and strong beef-on-dairy program to address consumer sentiment and the economics and profitability of dairy operations, particularly with how much heifer inventory you carry at any one time. “There’s revenue there but also reproduction benefits in reducing days open, getting problem cows in calf and not continuing poor quality family traits into the next generation.” Cameron says Australia has yet to fully see the impact of changing consumer sentiment. “When it gets to animal welfare, people in the industry know there’s a major problem with how bobby calves are handled, and consumer sentiment

“Because she’s a smaller framed animal, she produces a smaller framed carcass. When that beef cross animal gets to the end of the beef supply chain, it’s not economically viable to have a small carcass yield so there are economic limitations around Jerseys. “The Jersey industry needs to be very careful which sires it is putting into the herd for the beef supply chain to make sure it’s sustainable, but I still see an opportunity for Jersey farmers if they use the right genetics, feeding program and management. “It has been done successfully in other markets around the world. It can be done here but it has to be within a tight set of parameters.” Cameron says this year’s favourable conditions and push to re-stock herds shouldn’t hinder future plans to consider beef options. “The long-term sustainability of the industry is not going to be providing animals into the re-stocker market, it is very much going to a terminal-cross animal into the beef supply chain,” he said. “We see a variety of opportunities in farmers value adding to their bottomend calves, to their reproduction management and to how they are perceived in the industry; there’s a huge opportunity to add to animal welfare practices.”

There’s a reluctance among some farmers to consider the change, but Cameron says every farmer should educate themselves on where the industry is moving and what has to happen to make this sustainable. “You need to be mindful of the next person in the supply chain and all the way up to the consumer. We have Jersey herds supplying calves with selected semen and they’re a good quality animal with good growth rates. “What I’m concerned about is that putting incorrect semen into the Jersey herd will produce a poorer quality animal. “When the season changes and beef prices come off, trying to place that animal anywhere is going to be challenging and it will mean we haven’t fixed the bobby calf problem; we’ve just changed the breed.” Cameron says Australia can learn from overseas markets. “In the US and UK, the start of adopting beef-on-dairy meant everybody selling semen was scurrying to sell whatever semen they could without actually knowing about the calf’s outcome. “When the calves hit the ground, it was hard for some farmers to find a market for that calf. I can already see the Jersey sector making the mistake of putting incorrect genetics into their beef programs. “They need to talk to people in this space and align their breeding with a long-term sustainable market. “Today in Australia we’re not too far in to a beef-on-dairy program, we have the luxury of learning from the mistakes they made.”

CENTRAL GIPPSLAND

On Tuesday 30th of March, a beautiful Autumn day greeted a big crowd of onlookers in attendance to watch the 59th Annual Central Gippsland Jersey Fair unfold. Over 100 entries were received for the show from exhibitors coming from all corners of Victoria to attend. These numbers exceeded levels we have had at the show for some 25 years with the quality of cattle exhibited exceeded any show we have

held before. As a club, we could not be happier with the result. Our Judge for the day Pat Nicholson of Jugiong Jerseys, Girgarre showed why he is regarded as one of the very best judges in the country. A big thank you must go to our organising committee on another job well done and to our valuable sponsors who continue to support our show year after year.

TAS / SA State Of Origin On Farm Challenge With the drive of Peter Ness and Geoff Heazelwood, state pride was put on the line as SA and TAS went head to head in a OnFarm Challenge State of Orign to full members desire for competition with the absence of the GSC/GNC in 2020.

TWO-YEAR-OLD

1. Datumvale Vanahlem Opal - Marcus Young and family, Tasmania. 2. Robsvue Lemonhead Vanessa – ET - RS & RS Walmsley, South Australia

1st – TASMANIA

I feel the winning 2 year old excels through her mid-section, she shows a lot more depth of body and overall capacity than the 2nd placed heifer. She also appears to be wider of her chest and more open through her front end.

THREE-YEAR-OLD

1. Westdama Warrior Misty-

Po - Westdama Jerseys, South Australia. 2. Riverview Ridge Vanahlem Mirage Describe - N& A Chilcott, Tasmania 1st – SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

The winning 3 year old is a cow that I appreciate for her length and stretch of frame. I give her an advantage over the 2nd placed cow in her texture of udder, bone angularity and uphill run in her front end.

FOUR-YEAR-OLD

1. Merseybank Irwin Ballet

– Geoff and Anne Hazelwood, Tasmania. 2. Barossa Heritage Applejack Tiara – MG Wohlstadt, South Australia

1st – TASMANIA.

The winning four year old is a cow that shows a lot of style. She has a clear advantage over the 2nd placed cow through her udder. I feel she is wider at the top of her rear udder, her fore udder blends much better onto her body wall, I prefer her teat placement and she has a stronger ligament through the floor of her udder. The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 46

FIVE-YEAR-OLD

1. Fermer Golda 15327 – The Lawrence family, Tasmania.

2. Bellview Rejoice Golden

Lassie – SR, LP & BK Manuel, South Australia.

1st – TASMANIA.

The winning five year old is cow I admire for her dairy quality and angularity. This class was the most competitive in the competition. However, I find the first placed cow to be more feminine, she is cleaner through her frame – particularly through her head and neck, slightly deeper of her rib and showing more bloom than the 2nd placed cow.

MATURE COW

1. Fermer Vanahlem 13117

– The Lawrence family, Tasmania. 2. Nyowee Galaxies Opal – Ashtaney Jerseys, South Australia.

1st – TASMANIA.

Two very different types of cows in the mature class. I give an advantage to the 1st placed cow in her width of rear udder and the evenness in her rear quarters. I also feel she is in slightly better form – showing more bloom and fullness of her udder.

OVERALL CHAMPION – FIVE-YEAR-OLD Fermer Golda 15327, from The Lawrence family, Tasmania. The winning five year old is a cow I would love to see in the flesh. She is a cow that is in great form and hard to fault. I admire her cleanliness and angularity, she is a cow that shows a lot of depth and openness to her frame and has a superb udder.

NORTHERN DISTRICT JERSEY BREEDERS CLUB Presdient: Daniel Bacon 0407 753 324

Secretary: Pat Nicholson

It’s been a busy few months for the club. Plenty is happening on and off farm with many of us sowing, calving and irrigating again. Mid February our club traveled to south Gippsland, visiting herds and local attractions. A very enjoyable weekend was had by all. Thanks to Broadlin, Jackiah & Ripponlea, Bushlea, View Fort & Langdale Jerseys, for sharing their time with us. We also enjoyed catching up with many fellow Jersey Breeders for dinner. At this dinner we presented a Life Membership to Lynton and Lisa Broad (pictured left), in recognition of the contributions made to our club over many years. Congratulations Lynton & Lisa. Recently the April ABV’s were released, with club member results including Craigielea Gay 5588, owned by Cochrane family ranked #4 within the national herd. While Brookbora Jerseys ranked #1 BPI & HWI herd and Colnarco Jerseys ranked #11 BPI and #14 HWI herd. Well done to all. Congratulations to Pat Nicholson officiating as judge of the Central Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club Autumn Fair on 30th March. As always, a job very well done!

Class Field Day JA Class team recently undertook its Autumn Class Field in Western Vic and it was great to have the class team together again.

A cow’s teat is desired to be in the centre of the quarter in a vertical position. In a linear score model this position is a score. The ideal was at 7 to drive genetic improvement in the trait to pull teat back under. Utilising ABV to drive genetic change is a more appropriate tool than ideals. To narrow teats on your herd, select a bull with an ABV of greater than 100. Maximum Scores A 3rd maximum classification score has been implemented. Lactation

The Class team spend time working as a group scoring and analysing cows, reviewed the data and class trends from the 2020 classification results, undertook an extensive session on what is a 95-point cow, and discussed implementation of the changes to ideal and maximum scores as detailed below.

While we do not have scores exceeding 93 on cows on their 3rd lactation, we are seeing an overall upwards trend in class scores as ongoing genetic improvement year on year is having a positive effect. It is important to ensure cows conformation and structural integrity does not peak too early in her productive life. Classification Awards JA will be introducing classification awards for all cows. Previously, these have not been provided for 1st lactation cows. The Award Schedule is Award

Jersey Most Profitable Cow

Front Teat Placement

Is the Australian Jersey the most profitable cow? A question we often ask and answer.

Changes to Udder Depth have been implemented due to –

a. A growing number of 1st lactation cows achieving ideal

and beyond creating concern udders will continue to get too deep too early in a cow’s productive life

b. A cow’s udder is expected to move more than 1 linear

score in her lifetime. With a cows ideal for udder depth at 3, there is insufficient movement in ideal between a 1st lactation and mature cow.

For stature, an ideal of 9 indicates we are seeking to grow the size of the Australian Jersey cow. This is not the case. There is no breed objective to see an increase in the size of the Jersey cow.

JA has commissioned Dr Steve Little from Capacity Ag to investigate the key profit drivers of the Australian Jersey cow to your farm business. This is a detailed evidence-based project involving member surveys, member and industry data analysis and literature review. We thank those members who have taken time to complete the survey and provided their farm data to be analysed. Class Longevity Project We thank members who have taken up the invitation to be involved in the Classification Longevity Project. >>>

The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2021 // 53

| AROUND THE GROUNDS | <<< 25 members are involved in this project and the project will genomic test 500 cows per ear for 4 years. Participating members were selected form those who classified 2 years old in 2020 with selected cows from a range of all class scores from the herds cohort. (g) Test Project The first batch of cows qualifying to be tested in this project have been selected and invitations to test have been set to owners of the selected cows. Cows selected must be either classified 93 points of above during the most recent class tour or are on the top cow list at the most recent ABV release and not previously genomic tested. Please contact Glen on 0418 466 371 if you would like to know more information on these projects.
