At the recent Autumn Class Field Day, we had the very conspicuous absence of Trevor Campbell and Alan Carson. Trevor and Alan who as classifiers have served the Association for nearly 80 years, scored thousands of cows and travelled 10,000’s of km’s across the country. While we thank them and reflect on Trevor and Alan’s service further in the Jersey Journal, it is also important to acknowledge and thank their two great supports in Julie and WhenJanineourclassifiers leave home for their tours, they leave behind for the duration a farm to run and a family to attend to. On their own they keep the rest of us busy, combined all together and it becomes a monumental effort to ensure everything keeps on ticking while the classifiers are serving the YourAssociation.support at home has allowed Trevor and Alan to do what they have done for the Association. This support has also seen you assist for many years in the organising and planning of many class tours in your regions and not to mention helping out with class field day where possible. On behalf of all members, our thanks to you Julie and Janine. We also extend our thanks to everyone else who has supported their partners to enable them to serve the Association for the benefit of all members. GeneralBarrettManager Vic 3083 3 9370

If you have any questions relating to these changes, please contact Glen at the Jersey Australia office.

o The Association considers it appropriate to have a minimum time period between any classification to provide improved guidance to scheduling of within and out of tour classifications.

Were excited to have the Great Southern and Great Northern Challenges on the JA Events Calendar again in 2022 and even more exciting is the continued sponsorship and support of Semex Australia.

• Jersey Australia will no longer require the initial classifier to be present when the re-inspection occurs.

o This addition provided clarity to enable the conformation reassessment to award the cow a score other than the assessment score but higher than the cows previous score if they consider the cow deserves the considered score

Great Southern and Great Northern Challenges

o The classifier undertaking the re-inspection retains the opportunity to communicate prior to a during the reinspection with the initial classifier if they see a need to discuss aspects of the cow.

o The 5-day exclusion period to a show was considered an insufficient time period as the show preparation started far earlier than 5 days.

• Jersey Australia has added a rule which enables the classifier to award the cow a score less than the score they are being re-inspected for but greater than their previous score.

Further details will be provided to clubs in the coming weeks. Club competitions should be planned to be completed by the end of October to enable sufficient time to plan the GSC and GNC judging requirements.

• Jersey Australia has removed the requirement for the cow to have a minimum vessel score to achieve the designated final score.

Changes to Classification Rules

• Jersey Australia has implemented a minimum 60 day before a cow can be reclassified in either a Standard Tour or Out of Tour Classification

Minimum Vessel Scores

Out of Tour Classification

Jersey Australia has amended the rules relating to the minimum time a cow can be classified before a show or sale.

o Mammary has a significant 35% weighting to the final score and to impose a minimum vessel score over and above was considered to apply a level of double counting. This significant weighting also ensures cows need to be extreme for mammary to achieve an extreme score and will not allow cows with poor mammary to achieve an extreme score.

| AROUND THE GROUNDS | The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2022 // 7

o The presence of the initial classifier at the re-inspection is not considered necessary to enable the re-inspection to occur and will enable the classifier to re-inspect and cow and make the decision they consider appropriate without the pressure of the initial classifier being present

Stop Press Jerseys once again took a clean sweep of the ring at the Sydney Royal Easter Show with Bushlea Irwins Jenny taking the Supreme Champion Cow.

• No Out of Tour Classification can be undertaken on any cow 21 days pre or post a show

Minimum Time Between Classifications

The Rule changes are as follows

• No Out of Tour Classification can be undertaken on any cow within 12 days prior to a sale

o The previous rule did not have an exclusion period post a show. It was considered appropriate to add an exclusion period following a show to allow a suitable post show recovery period from show preparation.

o The re-inspection process has historically been to approve or reject the score the cow is being re-inspected for.

Re-inspection requirements of 94+ point cows

The Board has recently reviewed recommendations on changes to classification rules. These rules went through an extensive review process starting with the Classification Oversight Committee and then to the Genetics Committee before being recommended to the Board.

o The previous rule of 5 days was not considered sufficient to enable a conformation re-assessment of a 94+ point cow if necessary

Congratulations to all. A full report will be in the July/ August Edition of the Jersey Journal

Previously this was a minimum 5 days before a show or sale

o Applying a minimum vessel score requires the classifier to amend other bottom-line scores to meet the requirement ensuring the applied classification score is not a true assessment of the cow

“We’re taking out at the bottom and breeding at the front; every cow has to justify her existence for being there,” Michelle said. “We still aim to breed a well-engineered, milky, low cell count function animal.”

Top cow was #19735 and AUSSIGOLD daughter bred by Alan Burgess and recently purchased by Rohan and Graham Sprunt at Kaarmona Victoria with a BPI of 531

PICKLE was the number one genomic bull with a BPI of 420, bred by Luke and Mel Wallace at Wallacedale Jerseys in Poowong Victoria and also marketed by Genetics Australia.

White Star Jerseys from Noorat in south-west Victoria returned to the number one herd position with a BPI of 207, followed by Brookbora Jerseys at number two with a BPI of 202 and Rob and Kerrie Anderson’s Kings Ville Jerseys at three with a BPI of 178.

Con added that they had “thrown the net a bit wider looking for more outcrosses”, with bulls from Denmark, New Zealand and America. The herd was second in the previous proof run.

IMPECCABLE, marketed by AgriGene and bred by Kaarmona Jerseys, was the number two genomic bull with a BPI of 404.

THE April ABVs have provided positive reinforcement that Australian jersey genetics are world leading and bred to meet dairy farmer needs across the globe.

In the cow rankings, the top young heifer was Langdale Matt Naomi 2, bred and owned by Darien and Alex Mathews from Langdale Jerseys at Mardan Victoria.

Bulls must be active genomic tested and have positive ABVs for Milk, Fat and Protein percentage, Overall Type, Mammary and Fertility. In the latest release, 39 bulls met this criterion with an average BPI of 302, providing farmers a wide range of bulls that meet key selection criteria and drive

Con and Michelle Glennen said the top spot reflected their focus on continual improvement.

Whileprofitability.hisproofhas eased a little, DOUGGAN retained the number one proven bull spot, shared with his Genetics Australia and Con and Michelle Glennen’s White Star Jerseys stablemate DOBSON, both on a BPI of 413.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said the ABVs continued the trend of a strong, stable proof run for Jerseys. The results were highlighted by a number of bulls graduating to proven bull status.

Jersey Australia’s Positive Selection list continues to grow.

“We have genetics available to start incorporating polled into our herds and we need to embrace it. There are already milk supply agreements being implemented in New Zealand calling for a proportion of herds to be polled by a certain time.”

Polled Option South Gippsland farmers Luke and Melanie Wallace are selling a polled A2 milking two-year-old in the Dairy’s Finest sale and Luke thinks it’s a sign of things to come. It’s the first time they have sold a polled A2 animal in a multi-vendor sale and Luke says it won’t be the last. “It could be a few years off, but I think the Polled trait will become mandatory in response to consumer concerns,” he said.

John and Marg have high hopes for the sales. “We were really pleased with the November result,” John said. “We were hoping to average $4000 but we got $5180. We’ve been getting good vibes about our cows from different people. In the ABVs before the first sale, Warrain Jerseys was Australia’s number one health index herd, number three BPI herd and number two milk solids herd. “It’s good to support the breed by going in this sale. I’m a great believer in the Jersey breed,” John said. “The cows sold in the first sale have done well for the new owners, so that inspires us.”

who hosted a farm visit during the 2021 annual conference, said he was keen to support the sale. “We always like to put something up for an industry sale,” he said. “It’s good for the breed and for the promotion of Jerseys.”

They have more than 100 heifers at the moment, including some born this year and some last spring and Theautumn.first dispersal sale achieved a fantastic average for 150 head of $5180 with a top of $20,000. A daughter of the top priced cow MATT TREASURE 3 is included in the Dairy’s Finest sale. She’s an in-calf heifer to DAVID TREASURE 6 and she has a son by ASKN who has a BPI of 400 and he is to be a member of CSC’s bull team. SKY EMPRESS 2, another in-calf heifer, is also offered in the Dairy’s Finest sale.

The cow is from the Melaine family and Luke says she is “a good representative of our herd”. “She’s from our main cow family, Melaine. We sold one from the family last year in the Dairy’s Finest sale and were extremely happy with the results.” She is an embryo transfer cow and one of several full sisters, though not all are polled. “We consider her the best of the sisters,” Luke said. “She’s also in-calf with sexed semen so hopefully the purchaser will get another female as Luke, well.”

“Good cows always sell well so it should be a good sale.”

Mr MacKenzie is selling a heifer from his strong Jireh-Calais cow “Ifamily.wanted to keep her but I think she has great potential and I hope someone can breed from her to develop their own successful cow family,” he said.

Former Jersey Australia president Chris MacKenzie is continuing his commitment to the breed by donating a cow to boost Jersey Mrresearch.MacKenzie’s heifer will be sold as part of the Dairy’s Finest Showcase Sale in Tasmania on May 24, with all proceeds going to the Jersey Australia research fund.

Mr MacKenzie received a life membership when he retired from the Jersey Australia board last year.

The Dairy’s Finest Showcase Sale is on May 24 as part of the Jersey Australia annual conference based in Devonport.

The independent studies released last year show that Jerseys have higher fertility, higher production efficiency, and greater heat tolerance and longevity compared to other breeds, while modelling shows Jerseys have up to 14 per cent advantage over Holstein Friesians in the cost of producing milk kg/Ms and a better return on asset.

Last year the fund produced two independent studies that found Jerseys have the attributes that can make them Australia’s most profitable and sustainable cows.

Jireh Craze Calais will sell at Dairy’s Finest Showcase Sale with all proceeds going to the Jersey Australia research fund

Mr MacKenzie believes more studies are needed to reinforce the success of Jerseys and to ensure they are represented in official government “Theresearch.Jersey research fund was established to do independent research and the Most Profitable Cow project was an excellent example of that,” Mr MacKenzie “Itsaid.produced excellent reports that gave us the proof that Jerseys are the most profitable and sustainable cows but they were a drain on resources and the fund needs to be Mrreplenished.”MacKenzie instigated the research fund after joining Jersey Australia nearly 20 years ago and believes it still has a role to play, not only in conducting independent research but in influencing government “Governmentstudies.department research is done on one breed, and that’s not Jerseys, but one breed doesn’t give an accurate picture of the industry,” he “Jerseyssaid. and other breeds should be included in official research, not just Holsteins, and we need to have discussion with researchers to make

JA president Lisa Broad said both Alan and Trevor would be sorely missed in their roles.

Lisa said Alan had shown incredible leadership by taking on roles within the classification team have been incredible, over and above his everyday duties as a classifier. “He’ll be missed by everybody,” she said. “Alan’s passion has been a big part of his role and members appreciated that.”

A love of cows inspired Trevor Campbell to become a Jersey Australia classifier and that hasn’t abated some 40 years later.

“Alan’s dedication and commitment to his role is to be admired by all,” she said. “He’s put his heart and soul into it for 40 years.”

Even though he’s no longer farming, Trevor maintains his interest in Jerseys and still owns a few that are being milked by a friend. He started his JA involvement on the judging panel and was encouraged by a couple of breeders to have a go at classifying. “I had to think long and hard about it,” Trevor admits. “We were developing a new farm and had a young family and if you’re going to be a classifier you have to commit wholeheartedly. I decided to go to a couple of field days and managed to come up with enough numbers to be accepted as a “Iprobationary.alwayshad a passion for the cows and I had in my mind that as a member I should get out and about and perhaps contribute to the future of the breed.

TWO long-serving classifiers with combined 80 years of experience who have travelled the world together seven times and helped to shape the modern Jersey cows have retired.

The Rochester dairy farmer sold his farm last year and he’s now ended his long career as a classifier, but he leaves with many pleasant memories and the satisfaction of seeing great improvements in the “Webreed.hadsold the cows about 18 months before selling the farm about seven months ago,” Trevor “Isaid.always said that when the cows were gone, I didn’t want to be a farmer. I’m not a beef man or a Lucerne grower, it was the love of the cows that kept me in the job but we’ve adjusted better that we thought we would since moving into town.”

I“always had a passion for the cows and I had in my mind that as a member I should get out and about and

Alan Carson and Trevor Campbell have both celebrated 40 years as classifiers and both earnt life memberships from Jersey Australia for their contributions. Now they are retiring at the same time, but their legacy will live on for years to come.

Lisa described Trevor as a “quiet achiever” who had the respect of “Trevoreveryone.has always been one of the go-to people in the classification team,” she said. “He would do all the logistical planning with his wife Julie for the northern Victorian tours, and he was always a knowledgeable and reliable person on the classification team. “He was more of a quiet achiever who just went about his business and is very highly respected within the Jersey industry.”

Now“ I haven’t got dairy cows, I thought I should practice what I preach. I’ve always said that shouldanddairybecausecounterpartstheiradvantageclassifiersJerseyhadanoverHolsteintheyarefarmers24-7Ithinkthatcontinue.” ALAN CARSON

His first tour was in Western Victoria, covering from Colac to the South Australian border, the forerunner of many trips away from the farm. “It wasn’t easy,” Trevor said. “We were just a husband-and-wife operation. There were plenty of anxious moments and phone calls while I was away. “We were reimbursed but it didn’t necessarily cover costs while you’re away. Basically, I did it for the love of the job.” Trevor dedicates much of his success as a classifier to Julie for her support and for running the farm while he was away. “In those days it was different, you ran it as a partnership and you didn’t have employees. “You have to be dedicated to the job and make that commitment even though it’s not always easy. The tours are probably at your busiest times of the year – spring and autumn – so you’re leaving cows that are calving and all the work to do.”

While Alan and his wife Janine and son Tim own an out paddock at Irrewillippe and have a 75-acre farm at Torquay, they’re going into stud Angus and therefore the decision to end a 40-year classifying career wasn’t that hard.

ALAN CARSON Alan Carson has gone from brown to black cows and decided to practice what he preaches about classifiers. “I have always been a firm believer that when classifiers stop milking cows, they lose touch,” he said. “Now I haven’t got dairy cows, I thought I should practice what I preach. I’ve always said that Jersey classifiers had an advantage over their Holstein counterparts because they are dairy farmers 24-7 and I think that should continue.”

As he turns 72 in May, Trevor won’t be going to as many Jersey events, but his interest will never wane. “We hope to do some travelling. Along the way there will be a herd of Jersey cows somewhere so I’m sure I’ll have to call in and say g’day.”

Pressure also changed for classifiers. “When I started, we had more compact tours with not as much travelling; we’d do 40 or 50 cows at one place, now it’s hundreds of cows at a time. That puts more pressure on but you’ve got to be adaptable.”

Being adaptable to change is one the key ingredients of the job. “In the time I’ve been involved we’ve seen the cow change so much. We’ve now got a bigger cow after North American genetics changed the breed,” Trevor said. “I always thought being part of the classifying team – and we did work as a team – that we had to move with change. As the cow changed, we had to change our thoughts on how we score them. “If you’re adaptable and dedicated, that makes a good classifier. We had great camaraderie, it was always good to share a tour with a fellow classifier. There was work to be done but there was always fun along the Trevorway.”is confident that today’s Jersey cow is far superior to her predecessor from 40 years “Figuresago.speak for themselves,” he said. “We’ve got a bigger and more competitive cow and we’re getting more production from Whenthem.”classifying, Trevor admits he was “a bit of an udder man”. “I like a good udder on a cow but she’s not going to fill that udder unless she’s got a good frame to go with it. I always look for dairy bone, plenty of body capacity right through the cow and being able to walk on good feet and legs, which is a trait becoming more important as herds are getting bigger and there’s more pressure on cows.”

“It was just a general love for cows that got me started.”

For Trevor, the best part of the role was seeing cows and meeting fellow Jersey “Ifarmers.knowa lot of members are so involved with their farms that they don’t see anyone from Jersey Australia from one year to the next, so I thought I had to have a few PR skills. People were pleased to see you drive in the gate and talk Jerseys and about the Trevorsociety.”sees a good future for the Australian Jersey cow. “She’s very competitive production wise and in the show ring,” he “We’vesaid. made huge leaps and bounds as far as the cow goes and we’re seeing the results on the board.”

The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2022 // 25

“One young guy I recently visited said whilst I’m the bluntest person he knows, every time I go to his farm, he learns something from me.”

Janine & Alan Carson The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2022 // 26

Alan encouraged young breeders interested in becoming a classifier to consider applying, saying it is a very rewarding part of being involved with Jersey Australia.

“Every farmer in Australia makes money out of selling milk. We all like to have a pretty cow that will win International Dairy Week, but a cow has to give milk, and has to have dairy bone and be very functional in all type “Janinetraits.” and I were fortunate to win Dairy Week in 2019 which was one of our proudest moments, but that cow was also the number one BPI cow in Australia. We always bred our cows to pay the Overall, bills.”hebelieves cows are “much, much better” today than the early “When1980s.

Alan’s contribution was formally recognised with a Jersey Australia life membership presented at the start of their Cairnbrae farm dispersal sale last October.

Alan enjoyed the role, particularly meeting fellow farmers and seeing cows and what bulls were doing good jobs. “I believe I have been on every Jersey farm in Australia. I used to love going from Bega to Sydney – Janine would come with me and we’d take four or five days to do it. “We did several trips to the Atherton Tablelands which is one of the most beautiful parts of Australia, plus you see what bulls are doing the job and you can use them at Alanhome.”says

Over the four decades, he has seen many changes and improvements in Jersey cows. Alan was invited to go to a classification field day as a trainee around 1980. He went to a tryout day in northern Victoria is 1981 and it “rained like hell all day but I was told I performed well”. He went on a probation tour the next year with Bert Anderson and Bob Melross as a try out and again performed well and was added to the Classification HeBoard.did his first solo classifying tour in 1983 and has since visited virtually every Jersey farm in Australia, plus many overseas, as well as serving as chair of classification. But it wasn’t always easy. “I had to weigh it up when I started,” Alan said. “Janine and I were managing the farm on our own and we had children born in 1979, 1981, 1984 and another in 1988 so it wasn’t easy for me to drive out the gate and leave Janine with little kids and a herd of cows.

classifiers also need people skills. “Everyone tells me I’m a rather blunt person and I admit that, but I always let people know what I think of the cow without trying to offend, and 98 per cent are happy with that.

I started in the early 80s, most of the bulls were coming in from New Zealand but in the late 80s and early 90s we had opportunities with bulls from the US and they totally changed the shape of the cow and their udders were soft and full of milk.”

It’s fitting that Alan and Trevor are retiring at the same time. They’re great mates and made seven overseas trips “Ourtogether.last classification trip was to Tasmania is January and then the very last cow I classified was Windy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7, the champion cow at IDW this year and I scored her 95 so I finished on a high.

“Without Janine, I wouldn’t have classified one cow. There’s still a farm and family at home you have to look Butafter.”his love of the work always shone through and Alan has strong views on what makes a good classifier and the importance of the role. “They have to have a good eye for cows. In a way, classifiers direct the breed in that they score the cows that the breed wants,” he said. “We went down the path of giving the cows the most points that we believe the industry needs.” Milk has always been the most important thing when classifying cows.

“My interests are going to be black instead of brown so I’m going to cut ties with Jersey classifying,” he said.

When Roger and Amanda Heath receive their genomic test results they split the data – and corresponding calves – into three Thesecategories.categories include top animals based on Balanced Performance Index (BPI) animals, those with a high BPI and top pedigrees and those with good Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) for production traits. The Heaths have animals that appear in more than one of these categories. It’s this crossover with animals between the categories that underpins the Western Victorian breeder’s trust in both genomics and breeding using DataGene’s BPI system.

“It’s amazing how many top BPI animals have top pedigrees as well,” Roger “That’ssaid.what gives us the confidence in it, knowing the top BPI animals are at the top of the other groups.” Roger, Amanda, and their family milk 360 cows at Bookaar near Camperdown. This milking herd mostly includes their registered Wanstead Jerseys and about 70 Illawarras under the Amor prefix. The Heaths started genomic testing their Jerseys three years ago and tested some Reds about 12 months ago. Genomic ABVs for red dairy cattle breeds were introduced last August. Genomics won’t guide any major decisions for their Illawarras until there’s more reliability in the data, but when it comes to their Jerseys, Roger and Amanda use the information for many “Mainlypurposes.it’stoensure we are achieving genetic gain, making sure we are breeding out of our top-end cows,” Roger “Genomicssaid. helps us select our top-end calves so we can concentrate on them, we keep the top 50 per cent to breed from, then use the next 20 per cent for embryo recipients and export the bottom 30 per cent.”

Genomics Underpins Confident Breeding Decisions

Before genomics, Roger and Amanda would select replacements based on pedigrees. While this was reasonably Roger, Amanda and Tayla Heath use genomic results to split heifer calves into three groups: those to breed replacements from, embryo transfer recipients and surplus to be sold (for export).

As more genomically tested animals enter the milking herd, Roger and Amanda will use genomics data to guide mating decisions as well –particularly to address any concerns about inbreeding within the Jersey “Ibreed.dothe mating program myself, “Roger said. “I select half a dozen bulls that we will use in a year and most cows get those bulls and I pick out of those bulls select to avoid inbreeding.” Chasing further pedigree insights, Roger, and Amanda genomically tested the top 15-20 dams of their highest genomic ranked calves. “That way we know where the good numbers are coming from, the sire or the dam,” Roger said. “You can pick-up on other cow families that way too.”

Finally, genomic data is used for parentage verification, something that may seem small, but can have an enormous impact on the future of the “It’sherd.pretty important because it could lead to a hole in a pedigree if it’s the wrong animal,” Roger said. “Someone said to me, genomics don’t lie and they don’t. Lyn and David Parish (Dornoch Jerseys) continue their rapid ascension in the national herd rankings as they become the first Jersey herd in Australia to reach more than 2,000 genotyped cows. Milking 650 registered Jerseys on the fertile slopes south of Winchelsea in Western Victoria, the Parishes started genotyping their herd through their involvement in the ImProving Herds Project. In 2014, their first genomic results ranked the Dornoch herd at No.278 out of 387 herd recorded Jersey herds in Australia for Balanced performance Index (BPI) which combines the key traits that contribute to Byprofit.utilising the genomic data, and the information provided in their Genetic Progress Report (GPR), the Parishes have seen a dramatic rise in their herd’s overall genetic performance. After the April 2022 ABV (Australian Breeding Value) release, the Parishes herd rose to an average BPI (Balanced Performance Index) score of +139 and HWI (Health Weighted Index) of +121, earning them a ranking of No.25 for BPI and No.14 for HWI nationally. DataGene Extension Officer, Peter Williams has tracked the progress of the Dornoch herd over the past 10 Peteryears.praised the Parishes for their dedication to accurate record keeping and data collection, claiming he has not seen another herd improve so much in such a short period of time. “Their original results ranked them in the bottom 30% of herd recorded Jersey herds for BPI in Australia. Now they are in the top 10% nationally for both BPI and HWI,” Peter said.

“It’s a remarkable achievement to see a herd advance so quickly from where they Peterstarted.”attributes the success of the Dornoch herd to their willingness to embrace the genomic data, and Lyn’s progressive approach to breeding and herd management.

Rising Through The Ranks

Lyn says watching the rise of her herd in the genomic rankings, the additional demand for their young Jersey sires and surplus stock, and the industry recognition they have received, gives her a goal to aim for.

“Lyn is such a great adopter of modern breeding technology,” he said. “She knows how it all works, and when you tie it all together – you get a big result!” When analysing the Parishes Genetic Progress Report (GPR), Peter highlights the compounding gains achieved in BPI across the herd since 2014. “Coinciding with them having the greatest number of Jersey cows genomically tested in Australia, their Genetic Progress Report shows important traits trending well above the national Jersey average; traits such as type, longevity, mastitis resistance and overall Balanced Performance “TheirIndex.”herd jumped nearly 100 places in the national Jersey herd BPI rankings in the past two years (April 2020 – April 2022),” Peter said. “It is certainly rewarding for all their hard Lynwork.”said she didn’t have any specific goals or expectations when she first began genomically testing her cows. Though she admits their early genomic results showing their low overall herd ranking was disappointing, Lyn was not disheartened. Instead, she was motivated to implement new strategies in the hope of achieving change. “I never thought of reaching the top 10 or anything like that – it seemed so out of reach,” she said, “but it gave us something to aim for, so we kept plugging away. Now we’re nearly there it’s a bit of a thrill.”

Lyn admits. “It’s very rewarding to see our herd move up the scales and keeps us aspiring to do better.”

Lyn believes the use of sexed semen over the maiden heifers and high genetic merit cows, combined with the use of beef sires over the lower genetic merit cows, has helped accelerate the genetic improvement in the herd. This additional selection pressure, combined with a strict culling regime, is continually “pushing the bottom cows out”, with very few replacements entering the milking herd that have tested below the herd average for BPI.

Alongside BPI, Lyn has concentrated her program on type traits such as udders and chest width with positive “Weresults.are now giving more attention to the fertility and health traits,” she said. “It’s just another stepping-stone forward each time.”

Lyn studies the genomic proofs and profit rankings with her breeding advisor accessing genetics from all over the world to meet her breeding “Irequirements.don’tcarewhere he comes from – a good bull is a good bull.” Lyn says. “We try and use the top bulls each year, and can usually find bulls with pretty decent numbers while keeping all the good traits that I’m after.”

“It’s a pretty easy job when the vet has them all knocked out,” Lyn says. Aside from the breeding values, Lyn is also utilising the genomic data for parentage verification – which is automatic now that the genotype of all their females and sires (including natural sires) are on the database.

To ensure 100% of their herd is genomically tested, the Parishes collect TSUs (tissue sampling units) from every calf born (including bull calves) at dehorning.

Utilising the information provided by the Genetic Progress Report, Lyn’s first action was to incorporate the genomic results with their corrective mating program. By combining the genotypic data with the phenotypic evaluation, Lyn was able to customise her sire selection to maximize the genetic progress of her herd. “We tailor the bulls we select to correct the animal’s faults,” Lyn said. “We’ve encountered different faults within the herd over the years, but you have to fix one problem before you fix another.”

“It has taken some time – but it hasn’t been something that was all that difficult, or a real labour to get there,”

“We’re usually pretty on top of our identification, so there are very few surprises,” Lyn said proudly. “Though it is helpful for the naturally bred calves during times when we’ve had to rotate the bulls.”

Before trying to compare BV’s, its first important to recognise that different traits, methodologies and weightings and contributions go into both traits and not to mention they will be backed by different reference populations. At Jersey Australia there is no denying we support the Australian Breeding Values and Indexes. Why may you ask? Well, they have bene developed taking into consideration Australian farm data, Australian farmer preferences, use economic weighting based on Australian financial performance data and tailored to meet Australian farming objectives. We don’t disregard international proofs either as they provide additional value information to support you breeding programs.

Over the coming editions we will publish notes on how to read and interpret various ABV’s to assist and inform your decision making

✓ If you need to widen the teat placement you need to select bulls with BV’s that are less than 100

When establishing your breeding program, set you objectives and work to this year on year. Be guided by data that is available on each individual bull and cow from the classifier, herd testing and genomic testing and breed to enhance and improve the next generation and don’t forget to not compromise on traits key to your businesses profitability. i.e don’t pick a bull that is extreme for chest width but is highly negative for fertility as the negatives most likely will outweigh the positives.

✓ This is a BV that can easily confuse, as our expectation, is a bull must be bad if they are less than 100 and too often we see farmers seeking the +100 BV bulls with the assumption they are breeding for improved teat placement only to suffer consequences of unnecessary narrow teats DataGene have a suite of Technotes and Fact sheets on all ABV’s that you can access at www. datagene.com.au or if you are using the Good Bulls App, when applying a trait filter, there is a simple trait explanation. and Rear Teat Placement ABV’s

✓ Teat Placement ABV’s provide and estimate of the teats expected position on the udder.

Front

There are many examples of bulls being positive in one country a and negative in the other. Is one or both incorrect? They may well be both correct.

✓ The ABV’s uses data provided from classifying 2-Year-old heifers during their 1st lactation

When comparing a bulls BV on multi country proofs, it important to not get wrap up into the differences that it may tell you and cause you to believe one is wrong and on is right. This commonly seen in the Australian Breeding Value for Daughter Fertility and the USA DPR.

THERE are a vast array of domestic and international breeding values (BV’s) available to assist farmers when making their breeding choices and there is no doubt this can cause much confusion when sifting the many catalogues and information provided to you.

✓ DataGene provide ABV’s for both Front and Rear Teat Placement

✓ To breed for narrower front or rear teat placement, you need to select bulls with a BV of greater than 100
