ver the last 18 months we have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes at JA to re-shape the Associations governance structures with the support of external consultancies and we have reached an important milestone with the reformation of Board Sub-Committee for Genetics and Promotions and implementation of an Audit and Risk committee. A strategic part of this reformation is providing opportunities for members from outside the Board to sit on the Genetics and Promotions Sub-Committee to help shape the policy and direction of the Associations within these key areas. Expanding the participation in the sub-committee allows wider and more robust discussions and brings additional skills and thinking to the Association’s administration. It also allows opportunities for members who are looking to joining board into the future to start to develop their governance skills and understanding of the board process. There is several significant priorities and objectives that we will be working towards within the sub-committees this year as we continue to enhance and improve our Association and #DairysFinest cow the Australian Jersey. OVID-19 has changed the world in which we live, but in most respects, it has been business as usual for Jersey Australia.

While many functions have had to shift online and staff now work from home, the focus on providing services for members has never wavered. In fact, the COVID-19 lockdown has given Jersey Australia an opportunity to reconnect with some members who had fallen off the radar and to investigate new ways to strengthen connections. Some events such as the AGM and the announcement of Great Australian winners moved online, with events such as the Great Southern and Great Northern being cancelled. However, General Manager Glen Barrett said the lockdown had given Jersey Australia an opportunity to look at new virtual ways to engage with members. The initial lockdown forced Jersey Australia to stand down some staff for a short period. However, the staff have returned for a program to improve proactive engagement with members.

94 Point Cow

Congratulations to the Boyd Family and all at BRUNCHILLI on BRUNCHILLI VANAHLEM EILEEN 2 classifying 94 points. Eileen 2 was awarded this prestigious class score in the recent Autumn Class tour and follows a great year for her scooping the awards at the 2019 Sydney Royal Shown winning: • 5 Yrs. in Milk & Best Udder • Supreme Champion Cow & Best Udder • Supreme All Breeds Champion • Supreme All Breeds Production Award Eileen 2 also carries the JA 5-Star Jersey badge. Eileen 2 is pictured here with Lyn Boyd and Lyn’s granddaughter Maggie Boyd

“Last year we ran a governance program for ourselves and invited other breeds. We will look at doing some of that virtually this year and we’re also looking into a virtual youth camp. “ The success of the AGM and elections certainly shows that it is an acceptable form of communication and one we should use more of. “Everybody is challenged across the country– some areas more than others – and we have to accept it, deal with it and move on.”

“ We are looking at how best we can virtually engage with members as this pandemic goes on,” Glen said.

The member engagement program can be as simple as a phone call check to make sure they are okay, but it could also extend to assistance to help them catch up on registrations. “ Where drought or similar issues have impacted members’ ability to invest in their registrations, we want to work with them to make sure they are involved and that it’s financially possible for them to capture that back catalogue and to have their herd books up to date,” Glen said. “It’s about moving forward rather than looking back and we want members registering their calves this year and into the future.” Glen expects staff to work remotely for the rest of the year and Jersey Australia has implemented measures to ensure continuity of services for members. “ The short-term plans that we made to deal with the coronavirus look likely to become long-term plans. We will continue to function and provide the services members want and need. The new normal means that people are doing things they never thought they could do or would do.” Some areas were impacted, such as the ability to print and post items, but work-athome staff have been supplied with printers and other equipment. Jersey Australia qualified for JobKeeper, which allowed staff to keep earning some income and supplied cash flow support to the organisation. However, Jersey Australia investments dropped by more than that amount and in March the budget had to be reset and fees increased, in some cases for the first time since 2013. “ We had tried to maintain fees to support members but costs keep rising and it becomes too big a challenge if revenue doesn’t rise accordingly,” Glen said.

Jersey Australia Congratulates August ABV Leaders oorat farmer Con Glennen (right) has strengthened his place at the top of Australian Jersey herds with the release of the August Australian Breeding Values.

With a Balanced Performance Index (BPI) of 108, Mr Glennen’s White Star Jerseys have secured an eight-point lead over the second placed herd owned by Bernie and Carol McManus Bercar Jerseys from Lockington in the Goulburn Valley. The third placed herd, Daryl and Lani Hoey’s Beulah Jerseys at Wonthaggi in Gippsland, had a BPI of 99. White Star increased the herd BPI by four from April proofs, and extended its lead from two points to eight. It has three of the top five genomic bulls and White Star bulls sired three of the top 10 young genomic heifers, including the top two. Mr Glennen attributes the success to using high BPI bulls, constant herd testing, culling, early adoption of technology such as genomics, and team work. “We’ve been equal a few times and been the number one herd the last couple of runs,” he said. “We were two points ahead last time, now we’re eight. It’s a constant improvement and we’ve still got room to move. We’re by no means done and we’re still trying to grow numbers.” The Glennen family has been farming in the area for nearly 100 years and they have been quick to adopt new technologies.

“Genomics speeds things up, as long as you make sure you’re running in the right direction.” Mr Glennen said the win was a team success story. “I don’t do it on my own. My wife Michelle and sons James and William are part of it and there’s the whole family history behind us.” The top Young Genomic Heifer was KAARMONA PUBLICAN SANDY 16 (pictured below) with a BPI of 253 for owners Graeme and Rohan Sprunt of Kaarmona Jerseys north of Shepparton. Kaarmona Publican Sandy’s sire is PUBLICAN -White Star Patrick and Dam Kaarmona Valentino Sandy 9 EX 90. Rohan Sprunt said she was backed by 14 generations Excellent, one of the highest direct lines in Australia if not the world. Kaarmona Publican Sandy 16 has excellent fat and protein deviations, exceptional type with a score of 109, udders 111, survival 110, somatic cells 108 and mastitis resistance 103, fertility 101, plus she’s A2 tested, making it a really nice well-rounded proof. Her ancestry traces back via Araluen Park, Nowell & Rye Valley Jersey studs to a New Zealand cow family. It’s a deep cow family which has produced many good bulls over the years. One of the most noted ancestors is Nowell Power Sandy, Ex92 who had 11 sons go into AI including Raceway, Roundhill, Santana, Vipor & Aries.

“My uncles were herd testing and breeding forward in the 70s,” Mr Glennen said.

While this was the first time Kaarmona achieved a top genomic Jersey heifer, it celebrated other successes in the ABVs, with the number one Holstein heifer born in Australia on the US proving system, the number two genomic Holstein bull and the highest ranked Australian born bull, the number nine and 25th ranked proven Holstein bulls. In Jerseys it had the number two genomic bull Kaarmona Bazyli and the number 20 genomic bull Kaarmona Loki. The farm has converted from about 70 per cent Holstein to close to 70 per cent Jersey.

Reaching number one on a list is a long-term investment in a breeding program and a great reward for effort and the investment made. Jersey Australia General Manager Glen Barrett.

“We’re looking for more feed efficiency and to get more production out of our farm,” Mr Sprunt said. “We think the only way to improve efficiency is to take two Holstein cows out and put three Jerseys in and send more milk solids out the gate.” Jersey Australia congratulated all members who placed highly in the proofs list. “Reaching number one on a list is a long-term investment in a breeding program and a great reward for effort and the investment made,” Jersey Australia General Manager Glen Barrett said. The top genomic bull was VALENBLAST - White Star Valenblast with a BPI of 299 marketed by Genetics Australia.

“We had some of the first genomic work done in Australia and I thought at the time that my kids could get something out of it; but now I’m seeing it.”

The top Australian proven bull was MATT – Wilsonview If Matt with a BPI of 226 and marketed by World Wide Sires. The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2020 // 6

President Returns

New Board Member Looks For Team Approach

C

N

hris MacKenzie says he has unfinished business as Jersey Australia president. Returning for his fourth term as president, Chris says the organisation and breed are well placed, with significant improvements over recent years setting a good base for expansion. “We have been developing strategies for the board and its direction and I want to see them through,” Chris said. “We’re at a comfortable point now with the structure and how we’ve developed the important roles of the sub-committees so Board meeting time isn’t taken up covering sub-committee issues. Chris said the Board had reviewed its direction and performance and set the base for continued improvement. “Risk management and strategic development are ongoing. We’ve come a long way in recent years and now it’s time to implement some of these improvements and I’d like to see that through.” While happy to be back at the helm, Chris has listed succession planning as one of his priorities. “We need to look at succession planning across the Board from the chair down,” he said. “We want a structure where new Board members can go into an ongoing program.”

ew Board member Rob Anderson wants to be part of a team that makes Jerseys the Australian cow of choice. Rob, from Kingsville Jerseys in Victoria’s Gippsland region, is the only new face on the Board. “I had considered nominating a few times over the past decade, but the timing was right now from a family and farming point of view,” he said. “Our children are a bit older now and the farm is established so I have more time to commit to a Board so I thought it was a good time to put my name forward.” Rob doesn’t enter the Board with any pre-conceived ideas or issues to push, but he brings a lot of passion for the breed. “I think I bring knowledge of the breed and passion for the Jersey cow,” he said. “I’ve been involved with Jerseys all my life, as has my family. My passion for the Jersey cow and progressing the breed is a quality I bring to the board. We want to make her the cow of choice so you need passion to bring that forward.”

Chris is positive about the future of Jerseys. “We’re looking to improve the index rankings but there are a lot of positives about Jerseys and we’re regularly accepting new members, including those with mixed-breed herds who want to register Jerseys,” he said.

Rob aims to make himself available to members.

“The message is starting to get across about the efficiency of the Jersey cow and we’ve got to build on that with more evidence that gives farmers confidence that the Jersey is a cow of value.

“If you want to progress the breed you’ve got to be working as a team at a Board level,” he said.

“Breeders of Jersey cows should be encouraged to know they are milking the cow of the future.”

“I think I’m an approachable person; if a member has an issue or an inquiry, I’d like to think members will feel comfortable having a chat to me.” He sees the Board as a team, not just a group of individuals.

“If you’ve got a strong Board and a strong team you can progress, but if you go there as an individual to make waves, I don’t think you’re going to progress.

The Australian Jersey Journal – July-August 2020 // 12

“With any Boards, there are different priorities and things in place from previous years that need to be addressed and ticked-off before we can keep pushing forward. You don’t want radical change that could lead to problems.” It is his first board appointment and Rob admits it will be a learning process. “It is a business and you have to firstly learn the dynamics of that business,” he said. “For me it’s a learning process and a new challenge. I am excited about it. I don’t know exactly what to expect but that’s the challenge of it.” His first two meetings have been via Zoom, and that is expected to continue for the near future. “With COVID-19, the dynamics of meetings have changed,” Rob said. “There are obviously some benefits from that because you can have meetings from your kitchen table with eight or nine people from around the country. It might have some negatives as well so we’ll have to work through that as a Board.” A fourth-generation farmer, Rob farms with his wife Kerrie and daughters Emily, Meg and Holly, milking 220 cows and running his Kingsville stud at Drouin West in Gippsland. The family has been on the farm for 20 years. His father Bert was on the Victorian branch committee. “As a kid I can remember him going off to committee meetings when I was seven or eight years old so I’m happy to be following my father’s path.” There were six candidates vying for four positions, one of the few times a vote has been needed in the last decade. Lisa Broad, Jane Sykes and Alan Carson were re-elected to the Board.

Long-Term View T

he Genetics Development Committee is taking a long-term view of how the Jersey breed should develop over the next 30 years. Genetics sub-committee chair Lisa Broad said developing a strategic plan would pave the way for the breed’s continued success.

breed and recognising achievements of breeders.

the

One of the ongoing challenges is the continued development and promotion of Jersey Milk and 5-Star Jersey branding. “These were developed about 18 months ago and we want to get the brand better known,” Jane said. A `5 star’ Jersey is one that is registered, A.I-bred, herd tested, classified and genomic-tested.

“We’re setting up a plan for where we want to see Jerseys in 2050,” Lisa said. “We will set goals and timelines and pathways to get there.”

ELITE BREEDERS

Lisa said that recognising and developing the breed’s successes while also being aware of any difficulties and improving on them would be essential in the Jersey cow’s development.

Hopefully that will change this year with discussions under way about developing an Elite Breeder category.

“We’ve got a fantastic cow now and we want to make sure it’s even better and more successful in 2050.” The committee is also looking to develop the classification system and this year’s goal is to improve the trait description manual. “There won’t be major changes but we want to get better at describing each linear trait and have a document that breeders can refer to as a sort-of teaching manual,” Lisa said. In research and development, the committee will concentrate on educating the broader community that Jerseys are an extremely economical breed for their carbon footprint.

Three Top Priorities T

he promotions committee is planning a three-pronged attack for 2020-21 with a focus on developing 5-Star Jersey branding, introducing Elite Breeder recognition and marketing Jersey Beef. Promotions committee chair Jane Sykes said the priorities were aimed to improving the image and profile of the

Unlike other breeds, Jersey Australia doesn’t have a specific category to recognise the best breeders in the field.

“We have been working on this over the past 12-18 months and now hope to have it developed and implemented in the next eight months,” Jane said. It will be comparable to similar Master Breeder type awards presented to breeders around the globe and recognises longevity in the Association and elite performance of animals bred by the breeder. “We don’t have anything like this at the moment for Jersey breeders but believe it would be a great promotional tool and would recognise that a lot of breeders have done an awful lot for our breed,” Jane said. The criteria for classifying someone as an elite breeder is being worked on and it is hoped the program can be unveiled at the next AGM. It is expected the honour will largely be based on data and records, although recognising that computer records don’t go back that far. “Recognising past breeders with an elite breeder award is also a desirable outcome we are aiming for,” Jane said. JERSEY BEEF The potential to market Jersey beef as an alternative for bobby calves will be explored by the promotions committee over the next year. Jane said the industry needed to think of options for bobby calves before regulations were enforced. The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2020 // 13

“All farmers would agree that the outcomes for day-old Jersey bobby calves are not what society wants and at some stage we should expect regulations to be imposed,” she said “We need to work on it now because in the future we may not be allowed to continue as we are. “It would be to the detriment of the breed if we didn’t do anything.” The committee will be working on options over the next 12 months. In the United Kingdom, rules have been introduced preventing farmers from disposing of calves under eight weeks of age. “It is something we need to start working on because at some stage our hand could be forced,” Jane said. “In the UK when they changed the rules, farmers were given only two years to change their practices. “They already had a fairly good dairy beef market. What would happen over here if the same rules were implemented in two years and we don’t have a dairy beef market to sell to?” Jane said bull calves are a challenge for breeders and farmers that must be addressed. “It’s not going to happen overnight; it will take a bit of time and effort because you have to develop a market but we have to start moving on it.” Dairy Australia says he Australian dairy industry supports the development of more profitable and sustainable pathways for surplus dairy calves. It says the production of beef and veal from dairy breeds requires specialist production systems and produces an animal with different carcass specifications to traditional beef breeds. The committee also hopes to do more with youth engagement over the next 12 months. Another priority will be to start planning for the World Conference to be held in Australia in 2022. This was originally expected in 2021 but has been delayed because of COVID-19.

From Small Farms, Big Success Comes

B

ernie and Carol McManus might have a small farm but they have been big contributors to the Australian Jersey scene for a long time.

“I’d milk in the morning with Dad and then head off to work and then milk again at night,” Bernie said. “I hardly missed a milking.”

From their 32-hectare property near Lockington in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, Bernie and Carol’s Bercar Jerseys (using the first three letters of their first names) has been one of the industry’s great success stories.

The herd improvement job further stimulated his interest in breeding dairy cows.

As they prepare to sell their herd, Bernie and Carol are going out at the top of their game with their herd is ranked number two for BPI, HWI and TWI. The farm has been in the family since the 1950s and Bernie and Carol will stay to raise heifers for the next few years before moving into beef. At 73, Bernie says it’s time to slow down without cutting ties to the land they love. Bernie and Carol started share farming with his parents in 1977 and have owned the farm since 1998. None of their four children wanted to continue in the dairy industry, so their 130 cows have to go. While sharefarming, Bernie worked part-time for herd improvement companies Rochester Artificial Breeders, Consolidated Herd Improvement Services, and ABS, doing about 50,000 inseminations and selling herd testing and progeny testing.

“I enjoyed the PR part of it,” Bernie said. “I’d sit down at the kitchen table and talk about the bulls they might like to use and try to encourage them to progeny test and herd test.” Bernie only uses A.I, never bulls. “With genetics you can see what you’re using; when you use a bull, you go into unknown territory,” he said. “A.I bulls are all progeny tested and AB proven and you’ve got a selection available that can do anything you want.” Originally, they had a grade commercial herd after Bernie’s father Tom bought 36 deregistered Jerseys from a neighbour, J.J. Anderson of Amesbury Jersey Stud, in 1963. They started artificial breeding in 1967, regular herd testing and genetic recovery to become a registered herd in 1973. “We had a few Friesians at the time but I preferred the Jersey cows so we milked the Friesian cows out till they were finished and used genetic recovery to go solely Jersey,” Bernie said. The Australian Jersey Journal – July-August 2020 // 14

“We haven’t bought in cows and haven’t sold many cows, just the odd one if people wanted a Bercar cow. We’ve bred solely within our own breed using genetics and all the available tools.” Over the years, about 30 Bercar bulls have gone into artificial breeding for progeny testing and recently they have genomically tested bulls to gauge their value before going to the bull farm. “Genomic testing has been a big improvement. It gives a great insight to whether the bull is worth progeny testing, which is a fairly costly exercise,” Bernie said. About six bulls have AB-proven status and have been used widely throughout Australia and overseas. PASSIVE was particularly successful in South Africa and England. Bercar has four predominate cow families: B, P, R and M families. They rear between 35 and 40 heifer calves and 12 bulls each year and register them at birth. They classify all twoyear-old heifers and up the classification on all cows considered likely to improve. The four best families came from one particular cow in the P cow family by an American bull BUSH RIVER BRIGADIER. Bercar started using New Zealand semen, then went to Canadian and

“Australia has caught up with the rest of the world with genetics,” Bernie said. “Our best bulls work under our conditions. We use the odd bull from overseas but they basically got their rating through barn production. We picked up the values of some of those overseas bulls so we’ve got the values of both countries. We’ve lifted the base quite high. “We haven’t used bulls for their type value alone; we’ve used bulls predominantly for their production and a combination of type and workability.” It is an irrigated farm 100 per cent lasered with pipe and rises, and with bought-in feed Bernie and Carol have maintained a high stocking rate and a healthy, productive herd. “When we look at our herd test results compared to the district averages, we’re well up because of the high stocking rate,” Bernie said. “We have to buy in a fair bit of feed, but taking that into account the cows have performed remarkably well.” “I’m sure when we sell the cows that if they go on to an even bigger farm they will do even better.” Bernie says the new owner will be getting “a robust and very even herd of young cows”. “We bring 30-35 heifers into the herd each year and with herd testing we cull cows for any issue such as high cell counts or being hard to get in-calf.” They plan to sell the cows in midOctober via expressions of interest

rather than auction, giving the new owner time to settle them for calving next July. Bernie and Carol will get heifer and bull calves this year and sell them over the next two years. “It takes a lifetime to breed a herd that sits where ours does today,” Bernie said. “The cows are sitting right up the top of the indexes and this gives someone an opportunity to sell a crossbred herd or move from a Holstein herd to a Jersey herd. “They can fine tune things and they’ll have a really good herd of cows.” Last year the cows averaged over 272 days 5400 litres of milk, 206 kg protein at 3.8 per cent and 282kg of fat at 5.2 per cent. Bercar is a commercial herd rather than a show herd. “We’ve never had the time and it was never a great desire to show,” Bernie said. They have entered on-farm challenges for the Northern District Jersey Cattle Club over many years and last year two cows made the Great Southern Challenge final, BERCAR BRITISH 92 pts was third in the FourYear-Old category and BERCAR PECKER 93 pts was unplaced. They have also hosted bus trips for farmers to look at daughters of upcoming bulls. Bernie likes to move with the times to improve his herd. “A good farmer is one who is prepared to take on board new developments and to be involved in community. There is plenty of advice and technology available to farmers today to make it more profitable and more efficient.

We haven’t used bulls for their type value alone; we’ve used bulls predominantly for their production and a combination of type and workability. Bernie McManus

American but returned to predominantly Australian-bred bulls.

“When I started, we had people like dairy extension officer Jack Green who advised farmers on the latest developments and set up a farmer discussion group in the Lockington area. We’d all learn from each other and from Jack.” Bernie encourages farmers to try new advances in the dairy world. “You’re never too old to learn new things. “We’re involved in progeny testing, which everyone needs to do some of. Without that, we wouldn’t have the proven bulls we’ve got today. “I’ve always encouraged people to do 10-20 per cent of their breeding program to unproven bulls. It’s important to have a number of bulls available to give people an opportunity to make a selection. We’re forever looking for outcross bulls. Everyone uses the best bulls but that leads to a narrow corner in the bull market.” Overall, he sees a bright the future for the breed, especially with genomic testing of heifers and bulls, and sexed semen allowing farmers to regularly get heifers out of their best cow families. Bercar is a family affair with Carol, originally a city girl, an important part of the business. “Carol knew nothing about cows when she arrived but she helped me all along the way, whether we’re drafting cows or picking cows for AI, Carol is in the yard noting them, and she does all the spreadsheets and computer work,” Bernie said. Now they plan to “kick back and smell the roses a bit” and travel when allowed, especially with a son living in Sweden. “Dairying has been tough enough over the years with droughts and low prices but we have enjoyed it,” Bernie said. “You’re your own boss and go at your own pace. aryl Hoey has one of Australia’s top Jersey herds, due in no small part of Bercar Jerseys. “I’ve got quite a few of their cows here,” Daryl said. “Over the years I’ve bought cows from Bernie and the Silhouette herd while it was going, which were two of Australia’s highest indexed Jersey herds, and I’ve used whatever bulls Bernie has in A.I.” Daryl, who farms at Wonthaggi in Gippsland after moving from northern Victoria, says he likes Bercar’s breeding philosophy. “I like cows that are no fuss, that haven’t been pampered and go down the paddock and eat grass and compete,” he said. “Their cows work

under grass-fed, low-grain input farming systems, which is what I like.” The connection is strong and well established. “I don’t remember when I started buying cows off Bernie and Carol but it was a long time ago,” Daryl said. “They’ve always done well for me so I’ve kept going back.” The benefits have been mutual, with Daryl helping Bernie to park some cows during a drought year. “I’ve always found Bernie and Carol to be honest, no-frills operators and wish them all the best in retirement.”

True Believers

G

enetics Australia’s Breeding, Genetics and Production Manager, Peter Thurn, describes Bernie and Carol McManus as “true believers” when it comes to herd improvement. And their belief has translated to great on-farm success. “Bernie and Carol have been involved all facets of breeding,” Peter

said. “Their relationship with Genetics Australia goes right through from progeny testing and using A.I to supplying bulls and the use of genomics.” Peter said Bernie had gained legendary status in the field. “Bernie was involved in herd improvement when I first started. Not only was he a farmer but he worked in the herd improvement industry and that flows through to a belief. “That strong belief in herd improvement underpins what he has done with his own breeding program. He’s one of the true believers and a great success story.” Peter said Bercar’s B and P families had been particularly outstanding. A highlight for Bernie and Carol was the sire PASSIVE, a daughter-proven bull that had widespread use around Australia. In recent times, genomic sires such as ARDENT and DAMO have been popular and Bercar’s latest contribution, BESTYET, looks set to follow that tradition.

The South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club are proud to congratulate Langdale on their

All- Australian CHAMPION 5 year old – Langdale Valentino Madge Ex93 Langdale Jerseys – Darien & Alex Mathews.

Langdale Jerseys was originally formed in 2006 when Darien Mathews began leasing a small farm in Trafalgar milking 150 cows. With the introduction of Alex in 2010 to the partnership, the couple’s enthusiasm and dedication lead them to move and start share-farming in Inverloch in 2013, more than doubling their herd size to 400 cows. Again, they outgrew this enterprise and in 2016 relocated to Dumbalk where they currently reside, managing over 840 acres of land, and peaking at 520 cows with a split calving pattern of 35% in autumn and 65% in spring. The herd is 75% Jerseys and 25% Holstein with a heavy focus on high production coupled with high functional type – good udders, wide muzzles, and open rib. With a few cross-breds still in the mix, the aim is to reach a fully registered herd within the coming years. Undoubtedly the most consistent and productive sire used in the herd has been Valentino with 75 daughters currently milking. Sires represented in the calf shed include Chrome, Pilgrim, Disco, Coin, Skyman and Miami. Valentino, Hatman, Chili and Pilgrim daughters are making their impact felt in the younger echelon of the milking herd. The majority of the herd has been developed from the initial cows which Darien and Alex began with – however over the years, they have also bought animals in a bid to increase genetic diversity within their herd, whilst maintaining their interest in the cow families – both domestically and internationally. Specifically, animals bought from Araluen Park – Darien’s Mother and Stepfather and also Glenbrae – Jim Carson, have made a great maternal impact. Recently Langdale recorded their 100th Excellent Classified Jersey which they have either bred or bought. Within the Jersey Club, and now nationally, their prefix has become very well known, with the current All-Australian 5 year being bred and owned by Langdale. For the past 3 years, the couple have also claimed ‘Most successful exhibitor’ in the Club On Farm Challenge, and in 2019 claimed Champion Cow. They have also been recognised as a Gold Production herd from Jersey Australia. Darien and Alex are true believers in data, with all young stock genomically tested (either BPI or JPI) and the milking herd ‘herd tested’ monthly. With this rich data history, breeding decisions have also generated Langdale with numerous ‘Top 10’ genomic heifers with some reaching as high as 2 or 3 in the rankings. They have also debuted a sire into commercial production ‘CSCVirat’. Success has also been achieved in the show and sale rings- breeding 3 International Dairy Week class winners and also consigning the top price sale animal in the 2016 IDW Jersey Sale. This fast paced duo are working towards the long-term goal of farm ownership. With such a diverse and strong commitment to the dairy industry, we are fortunate to have Darien, Alex and Ivy part of the South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club.

Northern Victorian Cows Excel In Great Australian Challenge C

ows from northern Victoria have excelled in the Jersey AustraliaSemex Great Australian challenge, winning three of the five classes, including the top honour.

The champions first won local club on-farm challenges and then either the Great Southern Challenge or Great Northern Challenge which were held last December.

The region’s success was spearheaded by mature class winner and Supreme Champion MELDAN VANAHLEM VIOLET presented by Ben Pedretti from Froglands Jerseys at Tallygaroopna near Shepparton.

While typically Great Southern Challenge winners dominate the Australian final, it is unusual for all five class winners to be from the southern region.

The 2-Year-Old class was won by WARRAIN VALENTINO EMPRESS 1 owned by John and Margaret Cockerell from Numurkah. The 3-Year-Old winner was LOXLEIGH VALENTINO EMPRESS 5940 owned by Geoff and Natalie Akers, also from the Goulburn Murray Jersey Club. JIREH ARES SUNBEAM owned by Chis and Pam MacKenzie at Cooriemungle in western Victoria won the 4-Year-Old class. The 5-Year-Old class was won by LANGDALE VALENTINO MADGE owned by Darien and Alex Mathews from south Gippsland. The awards were presented on Wednesday July 15 via zoom. The Jersey Australia-Semex Great Australian Challenge is recognised as Australia’s premier on-farm challenge.

The Great Southern Challenge covers Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia and the Great Northern Challenge includes clubs from New South Wales and Queensland. The northern and southern winners were judged via video by a panel of three judges, Hayley Menzies, David Anderson and Darren Gravett. Ms Menzies said the quality of cows was very high in both northern and southern challenges. “The classes were very close, it wasn’t a walk in the park for any of the winners,” she said, adding that some of the northern winners had been advanced in their lactation which impacted on their competitiveness. Ms Menzies described the Supreme Champion as a flat-boned youthfulappearing mature cow with depth of body and great udder that attached very well.

Luck And Good Judgement Lead To Success

B

en Pedretti is a modest sort of guy, happy to accept success as being “a bit of luck and a bit of good judgement”. But with two major achievements under his belt in the past two years, it’s fair to say Ben is doing something right. Last year Ben was named Premier Exhibitor at International Dairy Week and he has followed up in 2020 by winning the Mature Class and Supreme Champion in the Jersey AustraliaSemex Great Australian Challenge with MELDAN VANAHLEM VIOLET. The 25-year-old breeder and dairy farmer from Froglands Jerseys at Tallygaroopna near Shepparton hadn’t tuned in to the Zoom meeting to hear the winners being announced, but he was ecstatic about the news. “I was busy and forgot all about it and didn’t join the Zoom until I got a call from (Jersey Australia general manager) Glen Barrett who told me, but I was rapt to win,” he said. “It’s cool to be on the same level as other cows that have been named Supreme Champion and have gone on to do great things. “They always carry that status with them. It’s nice to have found a cow that developed to the same level as the previous winners.” Ben bought MELDAN VANAHLEM VIOLET as a four-year-old from his mate Anthony Glennen. Her sire was PANNO ABE VANAHLEM and dam WALLACEDALE PLANET VIOLET. “When I saw her, I fell in love with her,” Ben said. “We got her for a pretty good price and she kept getting better as she got older.

Supreme Champion MELDAN VANAHLEM VIOLET The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2020 // 20

MELDAN VANAHLEM VIOLET was part of Ben’s 2019 success at IDW, winning Best Udder and being named second in her class.

| GREAT AUSTRALIAN ON FARM CHALLENGE | “She’s a nice cow and she’s had a really good year. She’s very balanced and a real powerhouse cow. She has a real youthful mammary system for her age and she’s a very fertile cow, although saying that she only had bulls for me, so I don’t have daughters out of her.” She always held in-calf each year and she herd tests really well, consistently with PI over 110. Although proud of the success, Ben no longer owns MELDAN VANAHLEM VIOLET after selling her at IDW for $5500 to Ian Anderson of south Gippsland. “Deciding to sell her was a tough decision because she was a pretty good cow, but we were rapt with the people who bought her,” Ben said. “They really love her and were so excited about the win, which makes it special. She was judged before Ben sold her. “You don’t often get cows of that calibre in your possession so that makes it a bit harder but I was happy with what she sold for. This win might have increased her value a bit but it’s all part of the risk you take. I sold another cow that made a bit more than I thought so it balances out.” Despite her success and being part of the Violet cow family, Ben said she doesn’t have the strongest pedigree. “She has a couple of herd bulls in her pedigree but it is a nice family that has put a lot of bulls into A.I.” MELDAN VANAHLEM VIOLET was bred by Brendan Scott who bought her Dam from Luke Wallace in Gippsland. In turn, Anthony Glennen bought her as a calf

Ben says the Great Australian Challenge success ranks up with his IDW win, even though less work was involved.

but I hope we can get her right again this year. I think she’s in the same sort of discussions.”

As a relatively young breeder, Ben has high hopes for future success.

This was his first Great Southern and national win but Ben is happy to share the honour with previous owners.

“I have a couple of nice young cows coming in and a nice group of two-yearolds. BLUECHIP GALAXIES RORY which won best udder at Dairy Week will calve in again. We had a trying time this year with illness before Dairy Week

“I’d like to Congratulate Brendan Scott who bred her and Anthony who saw her potential and I really admire what Semex and Jersey Australia have done in creating the All-Australian title,” he said.

Challenges Cancelled Due To Covid-19

T

he 2020 Semex Jersey Australia Great Southern and Great Northern Challenge have been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The cancellation of the Great Southern and Great Northern will also mean the 2021 Semex Jersey Australia Great Australian Challenge will not be awarded. While disappointed to have to make this decision, Jersey Australia is confident the Challenges will return next year. Jersey Australia and competition partners Semex Australia have maintained regular ongoing contact about the 2020 events as the impacts of COVID-19 have continued throughout the year. General Manager Glen Barrett said JA had sought to implement appropriate changes to allow the competition to proceed. “Unfortunately, the current level of restrictions, particularly in Victoria, don’t allow the competition to happen in all parts of the country without significant risk personal health and member well-being,” Glen said. “Members’ health and safety as well as those in our wider communities will always be our number one priority.” Although the Challenges won’t happen in 2020, Jersey Australia recognises that club On-Farm Challenges are pinnacle events on club calendars and some clubs will be keen to continue with their local events. “We are happy to discuss state-by-state restrictions and requirements required to run such events,” Glen said. Despite the disappointment of being forced to cancel this year’s challenges, Semex and Jersey Australia look forward to 2021 and the return of the Semex Jersey Australia Great Southern and Great Northern Challenges.

WORDS // DATAGENE

Data Delivers For Brookbora Breeding Sandra Bacon uses DataVat to access information about cows in all the one place.

Last year the Brookbora herd produced slightly less than 1.5kg of milk solids per kilogram of liveweight, averaging 7567 litres/cow/lactation and 286kg/cow/lactation of protein 367kg/ cow/lactation of milkfat. DataVat helps the Bacons combine various forms of herd information, including genomic data from several different sources, such as former industry programs and private companies.

I

nformation underpins breeding decisions at the Bacon family farm in northern Victoria.

their data contributes towards Australia’s national reference herd for genomic information.

The Jersey breeders have reams of data about their family’s Brookbora herd and that’s exactly the way they like it.

Sandra said DataVat was one of many tools they use for breeding.

“We are overloaded on data,” Sandra Bacon explained. “We use it for breeding. We have production data – because we herd test every month – we record all our health records, including our treatments and we have activity collars recording the rumination and each cow’s activity that assists with the management of hot days, that sort of thing. We also have genomic information and all the animal’s histories. We record as much as we can regarding the herd.” Now Sandra and her family, including husband Robert, son Daniel and his fiancée Stacey Leppert have started using an industry web portal to combine their information and generate reports about their herd. DataVat was created by DataGene as a central data repository for the dairy industry and provides farmers with easy access to their own data and a way to research Australian Breeding Values (ABVs). The Bacons milk 260 Jerseys at Tennyson, calving in autumn and spring. Their herd is also part of dairy industry’s Ginfo Project. This means

“We use the Good Bulls App to narrow down our bull selection and then look up DataVat for more detail on dam and sire ABVs. “On the female side, we download their full data and we use it for breeding including their strengths and weaknesses. We use that together with what we know of the cow from day to day, for breeding. It is good to get all the information in one place.” The Bacons select a team of bulls to use at joining but individually mate cows to give each animal the best opportunity to improve. They select sires which score highly for specific individual traits. Classifications and pedigrees are also considered as part of the Bacon’s breeding strategy. Milking registered Jerseys underpins the Bacon’s passion for dairy. Their goal is to breed a healthy and profitable herd, while striving for continuous improvement. “Breeding of the cows is ultraimportant for us,” Sandra said. “During the drought, we’d say ‘if we didn’t have the herd that we worked so long on, it would be easier to get out’. It was the cows that kept us going when things got tough.” The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2020 // 22

“With DataVat we can access the information from all those animals in the one place,” Sandra said. “That’s made it a lot easier, we are not trying to get some from here and some from there. DataVat also has all of our older animals, so we can go way back to day dot and look at it in one source.” Examining their herd, Sandra said she finds DataVat easy to scroll while searching their active cows’ specific details. The Bacons have genomically tested their entire milking herd and all their young stock, excluding the fresh calves. Increasing the proportion of genomically tested animals at Brookbora Jerseys has been a priority in recent years to build the herd’s dataset. This data boost and DataVat has enabled them to quantify trends in cow families, which they had suspected, after more than 55 years of breeding registered Jerseys. “It has shown lines that you just shouldn’t breed from,” Sandra said. “It’s also shown lines that it wouldn’t matter what you breed to them, they will do well. Their maternal line is strong.” The Bacon’s use data to improve onfarm decision making, but they also get satisfaction from contributing to the Jersey breed. “If we can make (genomic data) more reliable then we also get back something,” Sandra said. “Jerseys are also efficient cows and we need to continue to get that out there.”
