hey say good things come to those who wait and for the Jersey breed a good thing that is starting to emerge is some reliance in the national index the BPI. Since the inception of the BPI in 2015, what started as a bright prospect for the breed, the Jersey breed trust in the BPI dimmed significantly as a plethora of changes to the BPI had a significant negative impact for the breed and far too many young bulls that burst onto the scene failed to maintain any resemblance of their genomic proof. The 2020 National Breeding Objective Review was an opportunity to draw a line in the sand and a lot of work went into ensuring that Jersey concerns were listened too. It was clear through the data, a standardised BPI across all breeds was not achieving the desired outcomes for all with positive and negative outcomes in various traits for all breeds. Things needed to change and with strong advocacy and support from member and breeders and industry, changes were implemented, and the first steps were taken in implementing breed specific amendments to the BPI The recent August 2021 ABV Release shows a strong indication that we are starting to see the benefit of these changes.
Since the changes were implemented in the Dec 2020 ABV Release, Jersey proofs have strengthened each run which is what you should expect to see if we are continuously striving to breed better animals than the generation before. Most importantly, bulls are graduating from the genomic proofs to proven list with enhanced proofs as daughters enter the milking herds and deliver on the promise of their initial proofs. Breeder trust and faith is starting to re-emerge and for the Jersey breed that can only be a long term positive and of this we must thank those who would not give up on achieving a reliable national index that met Australian Jersey breeder objectives. Giving Back To The Breed G
EOFF Akers says Jersey cows have been good to him; now it’s time for him to give something in return.
Geoff has joined the Jersey Australia Board, building on his family’s 70-year connection to the breed. The Tallygaroopna farmer in northern Victoria has been part of the Goulburn Murray Jersey Breeders Club for many years, including currently holding the secretary’s role, and says his decision to join the Board reflects his love of the breed. “I was asked if I was interested and I was happy to do it,” he said. “I’d like to contribute to the Jersey breed if I’m able; the Jersey cow has been very good to us and we’re quite passionate about them.” The Loxleigh Jersey Stud was started nearly 70 years ago. The Akers family has been on the Tallygaroopna farm since 1993 after moving from closer to Shepparton. The family built the dairy in 1993, converting the property from beef. Geoff was working at the Department of Agriculture at the time but has since returned to the farm and now runs it with his wife Natalie, milking up to 700 cows on about 1500 acres, including run-off blocks. While the bulk of the herd is Jersey, they have about 100 cross-bred Holsteins milked in a second herd. “We find Jerseys are easier to manage and more efficient but we’re keeping the Friesians to get a few Angus-cross calves out of them,” Geoff said. Loxleigh has done some showing, mainly local shows and International Dairy Week which is also in the local region. The stud has also participated in Jersey Australia On-Farm Challenges, winning four Great Southern titles and taking the All-Australian title in 2017 with LOXLEIGH BADGER IRIS 4. Geoff doesn’t come to the Board with any pre-conceived ideas or agenda to push.
“I’ve got to get involved and find out where things are at,” he said. “There are a few new projects on the go so I’ve got to get in and understand those and understand the general direction the organisation wants to head. “For me, the main challenges are putting the focus on the Jersey cow but also being profitable as an organisation. The Jersey cow is in a really good position with her production and efficiency and we want to continue that.” One issue that Geoff sees emerging centres on bull calves. “Probably the biggest issue we have to face is with bull calves. As a breed, we may have to take responsibility there at some stage so that is a challenge for us.” On a more positive note, he wants to ensure the advantages of the Jersey cow around components and fertility are maintained and that technologies are used to advance the breed. “We have to make sure we don’t get swamped by other breeds,” Geoff said. “Jerseys are growing at the moment and I don’t think it’s unreasonable expectation that the percentage of Jerseys in the national herd continues to grow, particularly in pasturefed areas. “I think the Holstein breed has already identified the issues relating to the size of their cow, especially in the highrainfall pasture-fed regions. “A lot of our very top Jersey cows in the show ring have also proved to be very good at a genomic level.” Geoff is happy with his herd. “I breed for a base level of production and then udders and type, front-end strength and rib,” he said. “If they haven’t got that, they might be a good cow but I don’t believe you’ll breed anything out of them.”

Fertility and In-breeding A
S the winter / spring calving season starts to head towards its annual wrap, farmers minds start to think about breeding the next generation of breeding. • What are the next best bulls available? • What are the bulls that have succeeded in the herd that you want to use again? • What are traits that we you want to focus on to add improvement to your herd? • What bull daughters are topping classification or production lists? Breeding selections not only enable you to breed the cow you want, but they also have positive and negative impacts on your profitability. Farmer surveys will generally tell you that farm profitability matters most. Some trends though tell us a different story with Fertility and In Breeding a growing concern for the Jersey breed with both having a negative impact on farm profit. Simple available changes that you can make straight away can start to reverse these trends. These are some of the many questions most go through when the AI company catalogues arrive following the August ABV release. A breeding program is the most significant investment that you make on an annual basis with the decisions you make having long lasting effects on your herd and farm profitability. Get it right and you’re a breeding genius, get it wrong and you will remember it for forever. Breeding decisions made by all breeders in the national herd over many years are starting to have significant effects on the Jersey in 2 key areas. These being Fertility and In Breeding. Fertility has long been a significant advantage in the Jersey breed and while history says the genetic trend graphs have hovered between 99 and 101 for over 30 years, we are currently in a more significant downwards trend. While the breed should not panic about this, the Jersey breed does need to start to take action to halt the decline
and reverse the trend. As breeders, the responsibility for this start with you. Bull choice is the most significant decision you can make and have the most long-term impact on the fertility trait. Jersey Australia recommends breeders select bulls who have fertility ABV’s of 100 or more. This help to ensure your starting point bull selection is not going to impact your herds fertility. There are 177 active bulls available with an ABV of 100 or above. This indicates there is plenty of choice to find a bull which meets all breeding objectives. When you compare the trend on Fertility to a trait such as Overall Type which has a significant upwards genetic trend you can recognise where the importance of putting your selection focus lies. Across the breed, Overall Type has been a significant focus and the gains have been recognisable however, there is not a significant profitable gain in putting ongoing selection focus on traits such as Overall Type if you can add more future value to your herd by placing a greater emphasis on traits such as Fertility for a generation or two without compromising on traits such as Type. Data recording is the other initiative you can do. In the January / February 2020 edition of the Jersey Journal we ran a story on the disproportionate lack of Jersey fertility related data available to support reliable breeding values and R&D. Heat detection, every insemination / joining, calving dates and pregnancy test is vitality important data that if you have it, record it in your farm software and send it through to your herd test centre. Every bit of data helps to ensure the most reliable ABV’s can be provided to you by DataGene. In Breeding is a ticking time bomb across all breeds and unfortunately for the Jersey Breed, in-breeding is a significant problem with genomic inbreeding in bulls pushing towards 21%. The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2021 // 8
As a breed we have seen a small number of dominant bulls that have had a significant ongoing impact on the Breed both as sires of cows admired by breeders and sons for AI programs. Our world leading scientists have calculated the potential cost of in breeding to farm profitability per animal at around $27.00 of every 1% of in breeding per lactation. That is a significant loss of profitability for you to lose on an annual basis. While there will be a need to tackle In Breeding at an Industry level, you can also start to manage this at farm level. Last year’s Genetics Chair Lisa Broad called out several reasonable suggestions that you can take to mitigate In Breeding in your herd: Be more restrictive with line breeding. Even if the mating works, it is still in-breeding. Line breeding is just a fancy name we use to disguise the true meaning of the mating. Limit the number of straws per bull in your herd. Re-using top bulls time and time again in your herds narrow your herds pedigree spread. If you have used a bull extensively, be careful on the next generation by limiting or excluding sons of the bull. You can also help manage the level of in breeding if you are using the a mating program that has settings to limit in breeding. Set the maximum in breeding allowed at a ceiling of say 10% We also recommend you take the opportunity to watch Beth Scott’s presentation on in-breeding at this years Herd 21 Conference. Ms Scott has been at the forefront of R&D in inbreeding in Australia and provide an informative presentation on where in-breeding is at in Australia. You can access this presentation at – https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=NNN1Qp8GWmk These suggestions are not restrictive and are a simple starting point. Establishing and maintaining your breeding goals and objectives take a lot of time and commitment. Don’t forget to be flexible enough to ensure you can adapt as needed when needed.

Agri-Gene’s Jersey Highlights – August Proofs 2021
T
WO exciting new release sires to the Agri-Gene jersey line-up this Spring are both from the recently dispersed Cairnbrae herd – ROULETTE and TAURUS. ROULETTE is a CASINO son from one of Australia’s best Jersey cows, EX94 IDW Champion Valentino Daisy 11. At +384 for BPI, ROULETTE is peerless amongst the leading BPI sires – none can match his breed leading type and udders with positive fertility and production traits. TAURUS is a Matt son from the impressive Benita family at Cairnbrae who will add strength into the modern jerseys and improve components and fertility with an ideal type linear. Agri-Gene have been receiving great reports on the first milking daughters of Farnear’s No. 1 genomic sire PUBLICAN and breeder favourite ARAMAC. PUBLICAN now has 65 milking daughters in Australia and has maintained his excellent type ranking. He is built to use for those wanting to improve strength and components in their herd.
Roulette dam: Cairnbrae Valentino Daisy 11 EX94
Taurus dam: Cairnbrae Eltons Benita 2 EX92
ARAMAC’s first milking daughters have been added to his proof and we have seen his BPI ranking move from +261 in April to +328 in August. He has a great blend of type and production with outstanding farmer satisfaction. Maternal brothers MADILL-P and BOAST continue to impress with MADILL-P being one of the breed’s highest BPI Polled sires available and BOAST one of the most complete sires of the breed.
Power Of Reliability And Actual Daughter Data!
T
HE August proof run has seen some changes, but the one constant remains the same MATT IS STILL #1 proven Jersey bull in the breed. Why is this, he keeps adding daughters across more herds and his proof has basically remained the same since gaining a publishable Australian proof. With large volumes of data, gives reliability, which could be renamed confidence. MATT now has over 4,000 milking daughters across the globe with 262 over 45 Australian herds. WWS and Select Sires have for generations have always used proven data to create the next generation, in our fast pace genomic era of today this is still true. MATT daughters excel for an increase in milk yield with amazing components, something the Jersey cow has had to balance over the past 20 years with the significant increase in volumes she is now capable of. Breeders ask what are MATT daughters like, my response is typically moderate sized cows with balance and great udders, digging into his Australian linear, we see his only 3 traits under 100 being 99 Muzzle width, 99 Body depth and 98 Pin width, all of which are less than a standard deviation. I now ask myself, how many other bulls in the Jersey breed with reliable or confident proofs, are at the same level of improvement across the board as MATT. Of the top 100 proven Jersey bulls only 5 bulls have all traits at 98 or better, no bulls are 100 or better for all traits. The exciting part is WWS has a huge part in all 5 bulls, MATT, GRANT, OLIVER-P and TBONE are all WWS bulls, just marketed under different names in Australia, the 5th bull is from a TBONE cow. JIMINY an exciting bull adding early milking daughters in the USA and has had semen in Australia since March has had a great rise with daughter data coming from interbull, jumping 59 points to now +387 BPI, with most of his increase coming from ASI. By DIMENSION who has amazing customer satisfaction in all herds milking his daughters today, his dam is from the famous Ahlem herd and scored EX91 at 3yrs, calving at 1-09, 2-07 & 3-07, with amazing fertility she has also managed lifetime at 151 days on her 3rd lactation 19,150lt of milk, 9430kg fat & 722kg protein.
The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2021 // 10
with longer teats. His dam is a full sister to popular sire STARLORD who also brings DPR, teat length and components. MCCOMB has breeders taking a second look, his dam is one of many thousands of CHROME daughters breeders all over the globe are in love with, MCCOMB stands out for his increased stature with more strength than Chrome, he is positive for the important DPR at +0.5, while also adds teat length. At +16.5 JUI puts him amongst the breeds elite, no surprise with fire udder attachment at +3.6 ad udder depth at +3.6.
Jiminy dam: M Ahlem Determinate June 42595 EX91
JIMINY would be best used on cows needing improvement in stature, udder depth and fore udder attachment. JIMINY is also one of the breeds best mastitis and cell count improver. New release sire sure to cause great demand is BW GRADUATE, WWS have had great success over the years with BW bulls and GRADUATE is sure to be no exception. A CHROME son with balance frames with strength, dairy open frames with ideal leg set. His incredible udder linear with positive DPR and almost 100 pounds of solids makes him a very easy bull to use. Graduate is also JNS free. Graduate comes form a great maternal line at BW farms, his nearest 6 generations as follows BW Got Maid Maddie EX90, BW Isacc Claire EX90, BW Iatola Claire VG89, BW Centurion Peggy EX93, BW Avery Suzanne EX then the great BW Berretta Prize EX92 STURGIS has been extremely popular since his release after the December proof last year, it isn’t hard to see why, production improver with components, amazing DPR score at +1.2, improves cell count, but probably as appealing as anything would be his balanced frames, stature with strength, sloped rumps, incredible foot angle, with faultless udders

New Bulls And New Opportunities
A
UGUST ABVs have delivered great results for Genetics Australia bulls, with a Jersey bull for every breeding goal. CEO Anthony Shelly said the bulls standing in Australia have never been better. “We will continue to invest in the best genetics available to us and there isn’t a source of genetics around the world that cannot be ranked on the Australian system,” Anthony said. “The depth and quality of the Jersey team is unsurpassed and there is a wide range of options available for a combination of traits and indices,” he added. Australian Jerseys continue to forge an excellent reputation worldwide and recent exports to North America and Europe of ASKN will ensure demand continues to grow. Adding more than 90 milking daughters to his August ABV, DOUGGAN [David x Murmur] becomes the number one Jersey bull for BPI at 431, HWI 346, ASI 283 and the number one bull for reliability over 80 per cent. With 100 milking daughters, he has lifted for most ABVs and improved his Overall Type ABV by some 9 points to reach 105. He is the ideal bull for Jersey-to-Jersey breeding programs and given his ABV profile will also be used in many cross-breeding programs both here and in New Zealand. He is also A22. The good news for Jerseys continues with INVINCIBLE [Hatman x Valentino]. Adding more than 50 daughters in August saw him lift by 68 BPI points to 394 BPI. When added to his 111 for Overall Type and 112 for Mammary, it makes him a standout total performance sire. As INVINCIBLE daughters enter herds, the feedback gets stronger and stronger and a few days after his August ABV became known, all collected stocks sold out. He is now on a heavy collection schedule to meet local and international demand. The new Jersey team includes a number of young bulls from leading cow families and top Jersey breeders in Australia. There is no better example than the #3 BPI Jersey genomic sire Wallacedale PICKLE [Pixstar P x Lemonhead]. Offering a diverse pedigree, this complete young sire is also the #1

ranked genomic Jersey bull for HWI at 369 and has a Daughter Fertility ABV of 105. This young bull represents decades of breeding and no less than five generations of Excellent dams from the heart of the ‘Melaine’ family at Wallacedale and is A22. A greater selection of polled Jersey bulls will be available for spring BEDFORD P (Bashful P x Volcano) is beginning to put semen down and comes from a deep proven cow family bred by Rob and Kerrie Anderson of Drouin South, Vic. BEDFORD’s Dam Kings Ville Lassie 34 is classified EX-90 and produced a 305-day second lactation of 7,982 litres, 296 kgs protein, at 3.71%p, 393kgs fat at 4.92%f with a PI of 118. BEDFORD P has a BPIg of 307, 490 litres milk, 104 mastitis resistance and 110 for Overall Type, 109 for Mammary and is A22. BEDFORD is a stylish young sire from one of Australia’s premier cow families. HIPWOOD P [Oliver P x Brax] is readily available and continues to impress and offers a well-balanced ABV with over 600 for milk, 106 for SCC, 103 for Daughter Fertility and

impressive Overall Type (106) and Mammary Improvement (108). Young Jersey POLLEDHERO P [Matt x Oliver P is also expected to be available in spring. Genetics Australia is also extremely excited to add a new Jersey bull to the team, IZUKU – Loxleigh Oliver IZUKU. Sired by Oliver P, his Dam is one of the most admired Jersey cows in Loxleigh Iris 4. Sired by BADGER, Iris 4 was bred by Geoff and Natalie Akers from Tallygaroopna and she has been twice the Jersey Australia/Semex Great Australian Challenge Supreme Champion. She has a top lactation of 9,764 litres, 412 kg fat, 358 kg of protein and a PI of 124. She was classified EX-94 at eight years of age and this bull is set to be popular in Australia and will also attract a great deal of international interest given the performance of BADGER in several countries. He has a BPIg of 313, HWI of 279, 144 for SCC, 108 for mastitis resistance and 109 and 108 for overall type and mammary. He is heterozygous polled and A22. “Demand on young bulls both in Australia and internationally as well as the use of sexed semen has never been greater, so I encourage all farmers mating cows between now and the end of the year to order early to avoid disappointment,” Anthony said.

T’S an exciting time for ABS with the release of the August ABVs, with ABS Australia Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds describing the Jersey genomic line-up as the “strongest breed offering” for up to seven years with ABS having five of the top ten genomic Jersey sires. Australian Jersey breeders are taking the spotlight in the recent ABV genomic rankings, with number one sire Gelbeado Park WOODSIDE (CSCWOODSIDE) leading the industry. This bull entered the herd improvement system thanks to the ABS relationship with Central Sires Co-operative (CSC). Bred by Gippsland farmers Paul and Lisa Mumford and carrying a 396 BPI$, Bruce said he’s one of the few Jersey sires who can deliver strength and capacity to the breed. “ABS has put a lot of time and effort into finding elite Australian bred genomic bulls and CSCWOODSIDE is one of three new additions to our team this month,” Bruce said. “ABS Australia’s Jersey enthusiast Alan Blum has been scouring the country for us. It’s an exciting time for the Jersey breed.” Bruce said another standout was the highest-ranked single-P sire in Australia, Brookbora BUSHFIELD (CSCBUSHFIELD) at 345 BPI$. With 109 for type, 110 for udders, 104 for daughter fertility and an A2 sire, he has plenty for commercial and registered

breeders. He has just entered production with large backorders to fill, so expect availability to be tight on this important polled sire. Bred by renowned northern Victorian breeders Robert and Sandra Bacon, the dam of BUSHFIELD P, Brookbora Valentino Sweet Elfa EX-90, won the four-year-old in-milk class at the Central Gippsland Jersey Fair in late March. Ranleigh SKYWARD (CSCSKYWARD) is another new Jersey addition to the ABS stable, bred by the Boyd family in Gippsland. He’s 357 BPI$ and ranked 104 for daughter fertility. This sire comes from an incredible cow family that has not been used by many studs to breed sires. Breed outcross sire, Forest Glen Craze TRIPP, has dominated ABS Jersey Sexcel® and conventional semen sales for the past six months and at 366 BPI$, his ABV ranking continues to rise. Almost every shipment since April has been sold out and ABS expects this to be no different given his rise in BPI$. Another popular sire out of Western Victoria, Murray Brook JAMIEO (CSCJAMIEO) 366 BPI$, is an outstanding udder bull at 112, while delivering on health with 106 mastitis resistance. ABS is also excited to bring Sexcel® sexed genetics to Australian dairy farmers from the number one BPI$ true polled, outcross sire, Pine-Tree VACUUM-PP. VACUUM-PP was again the number one true polled sire in Monday’s ABV release and with a BPI$ of 252 and sired by All Lynns Listowel DALTON P out of a VIABULL, VACUUM-PP is a true outcross for many Australian Jersey breeders. His 103 daughter fertility and 108 mastitis resistance rankings are added bonuses. “The industry has been crying out for a quality polled sire, Bruce said. “The fact he’s true polled means 100 per cent of his progeny will be polled. There are only a limited number of Jersey PP sires available now in Australia.”

The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2021 // 18

HE August 2021 ABV release has boosted the status of Australian Jerseys. Jersey Australia General Manager Glen Barrett said there was stability in the Jersey proofs and a welcome emer gence of young genomic bulls graduating to the Proven lists with enhanced proofs. There were 14 new release Australian young genomic bulls sourced from nine studs and marketed by five AI companies, which Mr Barrett described as a positive for the Australian Jersey breed. “This is the biggest new release of domestic bulls for many years, which is a strong sign,” he said. “Breeders should be congratulated for maintaining faith in their breeding programs. With growing global interest in Australian Jersey bulls, there are exciting times ahead for the breed.” Jersey bull proofs have improved as new daughters joined herds across Australia, with bulls such as DOUGGAN and INVINCIBLE adding 91 and 51 daughters respectively. DOUGGAN, marketed by Genetics Australia and bred by White Star Jerseys, was the number one bull on the August ABV, improved his proof by 38 BPI to 431 with a high jump in daughters flowing from autumn calvings into his proof. INVINCIBLE was another big mover, adding 68 BPI points to 394 BPI. World Wide Sires’ Australian bulls JIMINY, BPI 387 and MATT, BPI 347 were second and third, with White Star bred bulls PUBLICAN with a BPI of 319 marketed by Agri-Gene and VALENBLAST in the GA stable with a BPI of 317 rounding out the top five bulls. CSCWOODSIDE - Gelbeado Park WOODSIDE, a MATT son from the Central Sires Co-op / ABS Global Australia stable, is a new bull on the market and tops the young genomic list with a BPI of 396. 2021 Great Southern And Great Northern Challenges It is with great disappointment, we announce the cancellations of the 2021 Great Southern and Great Northern Challenges. With club challenges in some regions highly in doubt due to growing COVID-19 issues and with the GSC and GNC having to be judged across 5 States each with separate travel and access requirements that vary greatly and very reactive in closing borders at very short notice combined with a risk of quarantine having to be completed either during or after judging we consider the most appropriate course of action is to not run the event again this year. Cancelling the GSC and GNC will also mean the Great Australian Challenge will also not in 2022 at the AGM. We do strongly encourage clubs were possible and within the confines of your respective state or regional area COVID-19 restrictions and requirements to continue to run your club events. On Farm Challenges are one of the most important events on our member’s and club calendar and making every effort to continue your club event should be made.

Thankyou Brian Launder
Brian & Katie Launder
‘With thanks to our outgoing president – Brian Launder - this editions feature is dedicated to the Launder Family of Glenmaple Jerseys. Today Glenmaple Jerseys is situated on 590 acres in Middle Tarwin, South Gippsland and operated by Brian and Katie, Aiden and Chelsea alongside Alan and Cheryl Launder. The family have been in Tarwin since 2010 after relocating back from Kerang closer to family and into a more reliable rainfall area. The Glenmaple Jersey stud was originally established in 1963 through the gifting of a single Lynlea animal to Cheryl Launder (nee Bunn) by her parents Les and Beryl Bunn of Mapleton Jerseys. Before eventually settling in Tarwin, Alan and Cheryl farmed in Kerang (North-West Victoria) from 1986 on a 900 acre farm where they established a beef and sheep operation before re-entering the dairy industry and re-establishing Glenmaple Jerseys in 1996. In 2009 the family made the decision to move back to Gippsland due to the uncertainty of water allocation and to be closer to family. Brian and Katie moved to Middle Tarwin in June 2019 and Alan and Cheryl followed in 2010. Brian and Katie currently run the farm with the assistance from Alan and Cheryl during the busy periods. They also employ 2 part-time milkers. Currently milking 300 cows in a split calving pattern (Jan/Feb 45%. Jun-Aug 55%). Jerseys make up 70% of the herd with Holsteins 30%. Herd production sits around 590kg/ms average, with grain consumption at 1.8-2 ton depending on the season. All hay and silage is grown on farm and harvested by themselves. Within their herd the most influential sires have been Elton, Vanahlem and Astound. With the current sire pool dominated by Jeronimo, Megapower, Matt, Oliver-P and Skyclass. Maternal lines shining through to Brian are the families – Miss, Ginger and Flossy, and a conscious effort is being made to ensure the Helen, Bunty and Winks families remain. Through the utilisation of industry specialist, Amy Wright, the Lauders are seeing improvements in their herd every year and are confident with the current scoring system employed. Situated on one of South Gippsland’s most envied farms, flanked by the Tarwin river, the Launder family see a bright future for dairy and the Jersey cow. The South Gippsland Club would like to sincerely thank Brian, Katie and Alan and Cheryl for their unwavering support of the club through their generosity of time and effort over many years.

Benefits Of Implementing A Safety Management System In Dairy Farming A
S a manager of a 640-cow Minstonette Jersey stud and commercial dairy farm based in Tasmania, Jane Sykes understands the importance of dairy farm safety, noone goes to work to have a catastrophic accident or not go home safe. Holding the position as Chair of Promotions on the board for Jersey Australia, Jane believes it is an employer’s responsibility to provide a safe workplace for all, “I want to send everyone home every day and I want to go home every day.” Dairy workers face unpredictable risks almost daily as Jane points out, in the dairy industry no two days are ever the same. So how do you protect your workplace health and safety, as well as manage the risks to your workers and your business when livestock don’t act
With a passion for cows and dairy farming, Jane and her team do their best to manage risks and maintain a safety system, but they do acknowledge they need some support when it comes to OHS. Prior to Safe Ag Systems, record keeping was difficult to keep accurate, worker records such as health details weren’t on file and emergency management wasn’t up to date or accessible.
Sadly, Jane’s story isn’t an uncommon one. A new worker had started their 3-month trial period and on day 2 was bitten by an insect. At the time of the incident, it was believed to be a bull-ant or jack jumper bite, but 24 hours later the worker began to fall ill, went into shock and was taken to hospital. Whilst at the hospital, Jane’s team were asked a series of questions by the medical team. As they did not have health records on file, they could not provide answers in an emergency situation.
After a recent scare on farm, Jane states, “It did show us just how far off perfect our system was, and I felt the need to look to a program to help us. Luckily our new employee made a full recovery, but it did show us all the things we aren’t as good at as we thought.”
During the implementation process Jane worked in partnership and under the guidance of Kirby Richmond-Davis,
the same day in and day out or the bull has a bad day?
After this incident which identified the gaps in health and safety on her dairy farm, Jersey Australia nominated Jane to incorporate Safe Ag Systems on her farm.

| INDUSTRY | an Account Manager and Business Development Manager at Safe Ag Systems. Jane noted that the initial process of setting up the safety system was quite extensive and time consuming, however, the hard work was well worth the efforts, “the more information and details you provide during set up, means the system will perform better and you will get more out of it.” And what about having direct access to an Account Manager that can offer one to one support? Jane recalls positive experiences, “when agriculture and life got in the way, Kirby was very understanding and the ability to move appointments has made it easy to deal with her.” This shift to a digital safety management system, whilst it has not been instant, the results have provided the encouragement and cultural change to keep moving forward. Currently Jane is working to input her remaining data into Safe Ag Systems but is already noticing the benefits. With a comprehensive safety system in use, the team can see the difference between where the business is, where they need to be and the steps they will take to get there. Whilst some changes may seem small, these small adjustments to health and safety practices could have significant impacts in the future.
“An example of this is the location of fire extinguishers. We have the fire extinguishers. They are in date and well kept. They are located around the farms and yet we do not have a map, or process of telling our employees where they are. Our previous employee knew where they are but none of our current non-family employees would have any idea where they are.” This is just one of the many things that have come to light during the process. As the safety management system is utilised more, it is expected that other areas for improvement will come to light.
expecting to benefit from a number of operational efficiency gains. Making the move from multiple systems to utilising one piece of software, everything is accessible in one location, “I really appreciate the ability to put information on procedures/ manuals/ SDS sheets and other hazards information into a single program so that anyone entering the farm can have access to it.” Once live in the system, Jane can grant workers access to important information they require to complete their tasks safely through the mobile app and desktop.
Implementing Safe Ag Systems on her dairy farm has made Jane evaluate what the business requires compared to their previous WHS/OHS practices. “We didn’t have a written procedure for emergency management. We didn’t have a map of hazards on our farm. We didn’t have a formal training register, or a list of what employees are licenced or trained on certain equipment (such as post rammer, confined spaces training for being inside the silo/milk vat)”. Safe Ag Systems offers a number of templates including policies and procedures, safety checklists, safe work procedures, and agri-specific safety inspections to ensure you are heading in the right direction for dairy safety.
Safe Ag Systems provides the freedom and reliability of a digital safety system over the clutter of paperwork, saving you time and positively impacting your safety culture. Removing the geographical barrier Safe Ag Systems has allowed Jane to notify workers and contractors on her property about the hazards of the effluent ponds, and that swimming near the irrigation intake at the river isn’t a good idea!
With the focus on the future and gaining the most from their safety management software, Jane is
Jane’s story emphasizes the success of a safety management system, such as Safe Ag Systems, when implemented correctly with the right guidance and support. Investing your time and effort upfront benefits your agribusiness with an easy to manage and accurate safety system.
