behindthescenes A busy time of year as most regions prepare for Annual General Meetings and I for one am looking forward to taking part in the Jersey Australia AGM hosted by the Manning District Jersey Breeders club between 18th – 20th May. Jersey Australia has had a good year as you will note when reading the Annual Report that was posted to all financial members late April and I’d like to thank all members who responded to our registration drive to reach 12,000 registrations. With your help we achieved our goal by processing 12,154 registrations between 1st March 2009 – 28 February 2010, which of course represents our financial year. This is a terrific result given the ongoing financial hardship experienced by our members. Western Australian members’ registrations were up 37% (39), South Australia up 17% (72), Queensland up 10% (91) and Victoria up 10% (679) on the previous year. New South Wales members registered slightly less down 3% (83) while the turmoil in Tasmania over milk pricing during the past year saw members register 66% (472) less than the previous year. Its hoped the coming year will see our membership continue its support by registering at least 35 animals per herd, if members supported this goal it would translate to around 14,000 registrations and really set a strong foundation for our coming year. Beyond our membership one of the biggest issues raised globally was the announcement from Neal Smith CEO US Jersey regarding the discovery that recent Genome Testing had revealed that Oomsdale Gordie Goldie Gratitude contained 23% Holstein DNA. Essentially cow had a DNA profile but her sire was dead at the time of original test so the DNA profile was not parent (sire) verified. Combine this situation with the enormous leaps being made in the

accuracy of Genome testing technology and the Jersey world has had to decide what to do with the Gratitude cow and her male progeny. Here in Australia the Board of Management have decided to downgrade Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude registration status to Foundation Cow meaning that normal Australian Genetic Recovery rules apply to her progeny. This means that the bulls 1JE604Gannon, 14JE431Grieves and Dale who have been marketed in Australia to date will not qualify for registration on the Australian registrar. The Board took into account the amount of progeny on the ground by the downgraded bulls and have made the following concessions. Female progeny of the deregistered bulls born prior to December 31st 2010 will be registered as GR2, females born beyond this date will be considered GR3. Members in this situation have been written to and informed of the changed registration status of their animals. Female progeny as a result of embryos sired by the deregistered bulls collected prior to the 31st March 2010 will be registered as GR2 and beyond this date GR3. All male progeny of the effected bulls have been deregistered with members informed by letter of the change of registration status. The media coverage of this situation has been sensationalised as everyone comes to grips with the possibilities that may or may not arise given the advances in the testing technology. My thoughts going forward is that Genome testing due to its superior accuracy will replace the previous status quo being DNA profile testing technology, which as we all know replaced Blood Typing technology - the world of science moves along relentlessly and we must be flexible enough to keep pace.

BOS GANNON BOS Trading as the exclusive distributor for CRI in Australia has been responsible for the sale and promotion of Oomsdale Jace Gratude GANNON better known as BOSGANNON. Like everyone else involved in the Jersey Breeding industry we were disappointed and shocked when we received the initial information in February that Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude (DAM of BOSGANNON) is not pure Jersey. We respect the Jersey Australia decision to affectively deregister BOSGANNON. Like our supplier CRI in the US we will replace any BOSGANNON semen still in customers’ tanks.

— JerseyJournal April / May 2010

Contact your local BOS representative to work out a suitable replacement option. After careful deliberation with CRI, our field staff and our customer base we have decided to continue marketing BOSGANNON. Apart from his pedigree status he is still the same bull, offering milk volume, frame and size. His new RRP will be announced after the April proof run together with other pricing for the 2010 season. it’s the most expensive one!” Bulls they favour include SULTAN and ASTOUND, as well as some of their own bulls. Among their buys have been DARAWAY TARANAK VANESSA 2nd. This full sister to DARAWAY TARANAK VANESSA had produced a couple of heifers through ET. A cow of great impact in their herd was ROWANTREE LESTER TESSIE. “She and her daughters have left some very good progeny behind,” said Jennifer. “And we got a very good cow that we bought for $900 from a friend, EUROKA ASTOUNDING BEE ,and she went on to win intermediate champ at NSW state show at Camden in 2003. “We have a full sister TARCOOLA EUROKA ASTOUNDING BEE which was a supreme champion intermediate at the 2008 Wauchope show and we’ve sold a couple of bulls from her. We are also working with the Fernleaf, Babe, Vita and Merle families.” Bull trades have been active, and this has helped to Coombes through the tight times. “I can’t keep up with demand for Jersey bulls at the moment,” said Jennifer. They also have BRUNCHILLI SAMBO EILEEN 4th, a full sister to BRUNCHILLI SAMBO EILEEN, the intermediate champion at 2009 IDW. Her daughter will be on offer at the state sale being held alongside the Jersey Australia AGM at Wauchope. And that’s where Jennifer’s energy is

being directed at the moment. She is helping organise the event in May. An eightmember organising committee is planning dinners, visits to nearby farms and the AGM and sale. They are expecting about 100 people. “Although it’s hard to know how many are coming from Victoria and Queensland. Accommodation is starting to get tight and we need to know numbers for catering and also who wants bus tours of farms.” How did she land a job like that? “We did too good a job two years ago when we had the NSW AGM and sale at Wauchope. Everyone said we did a good job, and so they gave it to us. They got record prices for the sale, so we’ve landed it again. Experience obviously counts. The Jersey stud started about 13 years ago, although Terry has worked on the farm for 38 years. Before that, the family has a tradition in dairying going back three or four generations. Jennifer said: “When I came along we switched to Jerseys. I come from a Jersey family. My mum and dad had Whitton Jersey stud at Wauchope. Her widowed Mum, Nina Lindsay, and brothers Ian and John keep Hastings Jerseys going. “So I was bought up with Jerseys all my life,” Jennifer said. Did Terry know what was coming when he married her? “Probably not,” she laughed.

Northern Hemisphere Jersey trip of a lifetime By Adam Gavenlock

After I won the 2008 NSW scholarship and Shane Oslear winner of the 2009 scholarship we set off the USA and Canada for a 7 week trip. 22 hours later we arrive in Madison,Wisconsin for World Dairy Expo (WDE) where more than 2600 head were shown. There were 482 jerseys which were led by Stephan Sparkler Vera winning the supreme champion jersey title. The size and the quality for all the classes were overwhelming with some classes having 40 plus animals in them. The cows were large frame dairy cows with high wide rear udders, with the heifers being very tall and extremely stylish and dairy. It just wasn’t about the cows at WDE there was a large range of commercial exhibitions from AI company’s, hoof trimmers, breeds societies, dairy company’s had working dairies on show to demonstrate the new technology that is on offer. After the show we hopped back onto the plane and headed to California. We stayed with Tony DeMello. Tony and his work colleges gave us a tour through the Handford and Hilmar areas where we seen the extreme side of the dairy industry with farms milking up to 3000 jerseys. Most farms were milking for 20 hours a day. Housing the cows in free stall barns, feeding the cows total mixed rations with the base fodder being corn silage with a mix of bi products, grains and minerals. We visited Ahlem farms; they were milking 2500 jerseys and have bred close to 1000 Ex cows. The herd was very consistent being deep open framed cows with well attach udders. Some of the stand out bulls at Ahlem farms where Golden and Implus were good solid milking commercial cows and we found him to be very consistent. Visiting Hilmar cheese factory was another stand out for us when at Hilmar. The factory is one of the biggest cheese factories in the world processing 7.1 million litres of milk per day. After spending 5 days in California looking at more than 10,000 jersey cows we hired a car and braved the roads and headed for Oregon to stay with the Silva family the home of Sunset Canyon jerseys. Stopping at Brentwood farms where we looked through his top producing cows and his 2 year old groups seeing BW Centurions Iris the dam of Surefire and Renegade. We stayed with the Silva family for three days seeing the famous Nadine still looking great at age 18 and a half and visiting the local farms. After 3 entertaining days at the Silva family we headed off for a weekend in Las Vegas and well what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. From Vegas we left the United States and headed off for Quebec, Canada to stay with Steve Borland the owner of Rapid Bay Shane Oslear with April Jarrell awesome Jarrell family kitchen.

jerseys. We stayed with Steve for 8 days, for myself and I’m sure Shane as well this part of the trip was very inspiring and very motivating, the herd at Rapid Bay is an exceptional herd of cows. We had the honour of seeing Rumour, Gorgeous, Jonquil a daughter of Duncan Bell and all the up and coming stars. The next stop off was the Jarrell Family from RJ farms/jerseys. Spending only four days at the Jarrell’s they made sure we seen everything we could that their local area had the offer. We started with a tour of their own property, seeing some really good Iatola milking two year and a daughter from the 2008 RWF and WDE champion jerseys Alexvale Made me Giggle Ex 97. They also took us to experience our first ice hooky match. Avonlea was another farm we visited when at the Jarrells, it was a very well set up farm, we were lucky to see more famous cow families a Comerica daughter out of Veronica, Members from the very well know “K” family. Russell Gammon is the secretary of jersey Canada also known as the jersey guru.We stayed with Russell for ten action packed days visiting more than 20 farms in 5 days the highlights were Huronia Farms, Waymar jerseys, Bridon Farms, Maple Ridge Jerseys, Rexlea jerseys, Roselea jerseys and Jaspar jerseys. Sultans daughter impressive they had well attached udders with high wide rear udders with nice frames to go with them. Then travelling with Russell we went into Louisville, Kentucky, USA for the all American show. It’s the strongest jerseys show in the USA. Centurion and Comerica were the two standout bulls of the three day event. Heading back to Toronto, Canada for the last stop for our trip at the Royal Winter Fair where we were extremely fortunate enough to work with the Rapid day show team. This was a great experience we learnt all the technique they use to get the cows out to the ring. Rapid bay had a great show winning Grand Champion with Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous also winning Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor. We would both like to take this chance to thank all the people that opened their doors for us and making us feel so welcome and going out of their way to make our trip so enjoyable and memorable. We would also like to thank Brian Albertoni from Worldwide sires, Russell Gammon from Jersey Canada and Brad Gavenlock from Agri-Gene for all their efforts to organise the trip, and finally we would like to thank the sponsors Dairy Express, Jersey Australia (NSW) and the Hunter Valley Jerseys cattle club without all these people and company’s our trip wouldn’t have and Adam Gavenlock in the been possible.

on 1300 acres at Gloucester, which is about an hour from the mid-north NSW coast. The property has access to irrigation via the Barrington River, which is unregulated – and delivered through a travelling system. The Forbes’ grow all of the herds feed, and buy in grain - which is fed at the rate of 8kg per day, per cow in the dairy. Adam and his father work fulltime on the farm, with the help of 4 – 5 fulltime employees, and his mother manages the bookwork. The herd is milked and calved down year-round. The family run Forbesdale Stud consists almost entirely of Holsteins, with the exception being the 20 Jersey cows that Adam owns today. Adam does his own bull selection and breeding via AI, ‘I enjoy reading all of the catalogues and also use the internet and forums to get information on how bulls are performing overseas. I try to select a bull to improve on each cow, while also aiming for type – if I breed for that, I think the milk will follow,’ Adam said. After finishing Year 12 in 2009, Adam is spending this year working on the farm, before heading off to the University of Queensland in 2011, to study Agricultural Science. ‘I would really like to be a fulltime dairyfarmer in the future, however my parents were always keen for me to have a qualification, as the dairy industry is quite unpredictable. It makes sense to have a qualification behind you, but to succeed as a dairy-farmer; I think you also need to have a passion for cows. I know I will miss them and the farming life when I leave to study’, Adam said. ‘After studying, I would like to travel – especially to New Zealand and the USA – if I managed to get some farm work along the way that would be great – if the right offer came up later on, I’d be off!’ Adam said. ‘Hopefully in the future I will have the opportunity to be home and managing the farm one day. To take over from my parents and continue to operate it as a successful enterprise would be great. I feel pretty confident about the future of dairy farming – I think the industry will be around for a good while yet. It is always in a state of change, and I think the young farmers coming through will be capable of carrying the industry forward into a positive future,’ Adam said.

Adam Forbes

By Linda Houghton At the time of interview, 18 year-old Adam Forbes had just returned from the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where his Jersey heifer Brunchilli Jamaica Priscilla received 3rd in her Class. ‘I bought her at the Brunchilli sale last year – so I am really happy with the result, and hope she continues to do well. However, an even bigger surprise was winning the State Final of the Junior Judging! I am now going forward to the national final, which will be held at the Melbourne Show. It just didn’t occur to me that I might win, as there were 16 entrants from all over NSW, so it was a real shock.’ Adam said. Adam’ love of the Jersey breed began when his grandfather bought a Jersey heifer each for him and his sisters, Kate and Ellen – and that was all it took for him to become a fan of the breed. ‘We found the heifers were really easy to handle – especially as I was 10 at the time. Since then, I’ve steadily bred up my own Jersey herd,’ Adam said ‘I started leading cows in shows when I was 12, and built up my handling experience from there. I also enjoyed attending Youth Camps, at Tamworth, and an All-breeds Youth Camp in Victoria – it was great to meet other kids who love cows and farming, and learning from each other.’ When judging, Adam looks for cows with great balance, a quality udder and sound legs and feet for longevity. ‘I also look for cows that don’t have any obvious flaws – a good all-round cow,’ Adam said. ‘Our family has enjoyed showing over the years, and we also enjoy participating in the on-farm challenge – it’s brilliant, you get to see all the great cows that you wouldn’t get to see at a show,’ Adam said. Adam grew up on his parents’ 500-cow dairy farm, — JerseyJournal February / March 2010

CSCHARRISON GOES TO CHINA Albury, NSW – The high type proven Jersey sire CSCHarrison has been flown from Australia to his new home in China. CSCHarrison is the first Australian Jersey proven sire to be sent to China. ABS Australia has provided 35 proven Holstein bulls in a joint venture between the largest milk processor in China, Mengnui Dairies, and ABS Global. ABS Australia Dairy Product Manager Russell Manton said both ABS and the Central Sires Co-operative, which owned CSCHarrison, were both pleased and excited about the groundbreaking export. The bulls left in the first week of November and once they arrived, spent 45 days in quarantine before being trucked to their new home at a facility in Inner Mongolia, about

600kms from Beijing. The facility is modeled on ABS Global’s state of the art new Dekorra complex. There are a number of herds in the Inner Mongolia region which have crossbreed type cows with good components which supply

the Chinese milk market. CSCHarrison semen will be mainly used in these herds as well as others. Depending on CSCHarrison’s success, other Australian Jersey bulls may follow in his footsteps in the future.

The Central Sires Coop Board and ABS Australia management would like to acknowledge and congratulate the breeders of CSC Harrison, AJ, MA & KE York which was accidently omitted from the press release in the February/March 2010 Jersey Journal. Both companies realise that the cornerstone to any successful PT program is the registered breeder who provides seed stock for the global Jersey gene pool.

Whitton Jerseys By Linda Houghton

The Whitton Jersey Stud is situated at Huntingdon, and backs onto the Hastings River, just outside of Wauchope - near Port Macquarie in NSW. Ian and Sue Lindsay are the fifth generation to run the property, which was established in 1858. ‘I think I have milk flowing through my veins, being the fourth generation to run it as a dairy farm’ Ian said. Before taking on the family farming enterprise, Ian drove milk tankers, and then went home to sharefarm with his mother, Nina. ‘When the GST was introduced, Mum said she’d had enough (and Dad had passed away some years before), so that’s when Sue and I took over. However, she still lives on the property and at 83 has a keen eye for a good Jersey cow’, Ian said. The Lindsay’s milk a herd of around 50 – 60 head on the home farm 98 acres. After experiencing three floods in 2009, this year is shaping up well. ‘Things are better this year, but a bit dry at present – we’ve just finished sowing the winter feed crops – rye, clover and chicory – which should do well. We are lucky that the soil is alluvial and very rich, which has allowed us to be self-contained and grow all our own feed. The only exception was the flood year, when we bought in hay. Other than that, we feed 5kg of pellets per cow, per day in the dairy to top them up. ‘I keep an eye on the soil by testing every now and again, and in 2009 we tried a more natural approach and used chook manure as fertiliser, with excellent results. However, as the milk price is low this year, we’ve gone back to superphosphates as usual. I

don’t like the nitrogen fertilisers – as I think the soil becomes dependent on it. I try to put nitrogen back into the soil by planting red clover,’ Ian said. The property has spray irrigation via a travelling system to 12 – 13 hectares, with a pumping licence out of the Hastings River. ‘It is an un-regulated river, but we still have to hold a licence, and are on a hectare restriction,’ Ian said. The herd is milked and calved year-round, and the Lindsay’s supply the Hastings Co-Op, which produces cheese and yoghurt only, with 23 suppliers currently on the books. ‘Milking all year is constant work, but we’ve always done it and are used to it. This year we may not be getting a winter incentive – due to the recent financial crisis, which will make things harder. Currently we are getting 37 cents per litre – however I know that some producers have privately negotiated with other suppliers and receive between 50 – 60 cents per litre. We’ve looked at supplying elsewhere, but factories aren’t taking on any more suppliers, and there are waiting lists’ Ian said. The dairy is a walk-through with step-up bales with each milking taking around an hour. The Lindsay’s are firm believers in herd testing, and the Whitton Jersey herds rolling production average is 6,370 litres, with 3.5 Protein (234kg Protein) and 4.7 B/Fat (299kg B/Fat). ‘I can’t understand anyone who doesn’t herd test – it should be the last thing you stop doing in tough times. How can you control your cell count and make informed decisions without this information? I also believe herd-testing increases

the value of your cows – the information is vital to prospective buyers. We have a good line of heifers coming through this year, so I can’t wait to see what sort of numbers they do in the dairy’ Ian said. Bulls are selected on an individual basis – matched to improve each cow. ‘I only buy 5 doses of any one bull – as I like to use a lot of different bulls. Early on, I used top Australian/NZ bulls with great results – such as Branston Royal Democrat and Hasties River Roslyn Sultan. Other bulls that have positively contributed to the herd are Ingalala Dazzler, Lester, Malcolm and Imperial. Currently, I am mixing it up between American, Australian and Canadian bulls, using Senior, Blackstone, Fusion and Sultan, plus a few Genetics Australia bulls such as Bartpower, Badger and Resurrection. ‘I breed for a good functional cow that will produce well – not just a show cow, or anything too big – just a good honest cow. To me, Jerseys are a great breed because they keep going during tough times, can handle extreme weather and calve easily’ Ian said. The Lindsay family provides all the labour on-farm, with their 10 year-old daughter Charlotte also pitching in - rearing calves, and teaching them to lead. Sue also works as a midwife at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital, and the entire family also enjoys showing their cows. At the time of interview, preparations were in place for taking a team of 10 – 12 cows to the local Wauchope Show on April 16th. ‘Charlotte did well last year with her heifer, winning Intermediate Supreme Champion with ‘Whitton Julians Jade’, so she’s hoping to do well with her again this year too. It’s a busy time for our family as I am also the Chief Cattle Steward – and have been for the past 15 years. I really enjoy seeing the cows, and catching up with people – it’s great to see them all come back. This year the show is going to be really special, as it is our 100th Year Centenary Show, and everyone has been really busy to ensure it is a great success.’ ‘I’m also a fan of the on-farm challenge – because the judges come to you. Our club (Manning Valley Jersey Cattle Club - Taree) holds a dinner and we get to view really good cows ‘in their working clothes’ – which is great. It’s a great alternative to showing

and a real time-saver, giving breeders the chance to showcase their cows’ Ian said. Like most dairying families, the Lindsay’s are feeling the pressure of ongoing low prices from milk processors, and trying to farm effectively into the future in an uncertain environment. ‘The Huntingdon area is unlikely have any dairy farms in the years to come, as land prices are being pushed up by buyers looking for a few acres and a country lifestyle. As it is, I can’t run the herd down the road to our 43 acre out-block anymore, due to the presence of newly subdivided properties, which all have landscaping etc. It’s like we farm on the edge of town now’ Ian said. ‘That’s just one of our worries – and there are only so many knocks you can take. The global financial crisis hit the dairy industry hard – as overseas markets were flooded with product, which rebounded on the Australian markets’, Ian said ‘I just wish that one of the processors would get real about on-farm production costs, and guarantee a minimum return that provides a decent profit margin – say 50 cents per litre. ‘If farmers could depend on that as an ongoing minimum price, it would enable them to stay in the industry, plan ahead and manage their business more effectively into the future. For instance, last year, we were getting 61 cents per litre, and as our infrastructure was falling apart, we invested in updating our machinery, and have now been hit with a price plummet – down to 37 cents in February this year,’ Ian said. ‘When the milk leaves the vat, everyone else who touches it gets paid their full entitlement – for instance; the tanker driver, the milk processor, and even the check-out operator at the supermarket. They all get their entitled payments – but farmers get what they are given, and are lucky if it even covers their costs! It is a known fact that farming contributes to and supports small communities all around Australia – so it is quite shocking that such an important industry could die-off - simply due to an unfair pricing structure’. ‘I don’t have the answers to fix it, but Sue and I will hang in there for a few more years, and wait and see what eventuates‘ Ian said.

PROMVIEW the Flowerpower son from the much admired Astound daughter Promview Jenny 64. The breeding may not be new but the combination of high type and high production will create interest within the Jersey breed. Having now inspected a large number of daughters and received very positive feedback from herds where his daughters are being milked, we believe the bull will make a very positive contribution to the breed. OFFICE MATTERS By Office Manager Lorraine Keating

Hi all, A big thanks to everyone who contributed to our Registrations beating last year’s. What’s new:Jersey Bulls’ DNA Case Numbers We now have a full list of Jersey Bulls who have been DNA tested on our website. It is sorted by Stud Names. When doing DNA testing for parent verification you can look up the bull and include his DNA Case Number on your sheet and it should speed up the process. I can also provide the list in Excel Spreadsheet (easier to search) and, for those of you who will not be dragged kicking and screaming to a computer, give me a buzz and you can get it in hard copy. Of course that’s not going to help if you can’t remember what bull

you used and have to test every canister in your tank (you know who you are!). Although I have to admit I was pretty impressed that you could get a Geneticist so excited when she finally found it. What’s not:Alright you lot, give us a break. I know I’ve said I could register from anything but I didn’t mean I could read your minds. It is becoming more common for us to receive registrations with abbreviations for bulls’ names of which we have no idea. Now we’re good, but not that good! Bit more care required here. Though I must admit the best one was a name we could not even read and on ringing the interested party were told – “Yeh, couldn’t really remember his name but I thought you’d be able to work it out”. Unfortunately the crystal ball

was out for polishing that week. And just in case you thought I’d mellowed, it’s Autumn Class, Elections, AGM Prep, & Production Awards……… AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH……… Catch ya’ Lorraine
