behindthescenes I’m not sure who to attribute the quote to but someone once said “there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come”. Initially a small group of Australian Jersey enthusiasts conceived and carried the idea that our incorporated state branches may one day make way for a more modern national structure. After three years of careful planning, lots of frank discussion at state and Federal level along with the support of the majority of members the idea has finally arrived. The decision was made at what can now be called the final meeting of AJBS Federal Council which was hosted by the Colac & Districts Jersey Breeders Club during June. “We hoped that we might be able to begin trading as Jersey Australia as early as the 1st July” said Milton Johnston, AJBS Federal Council President in Colac. Due to a hold up at ASIC who were handling the Jersey Australia Incorporation application, Federal Council made the decision to begin trading as Jersey Australia with a new set of national fees on 1st September 2008. Also announced at the AJBS Federal Council AGM was the result of the national election conducted during May and early June. Mr Jeff Parker Kenilworth Queensland, Mr Troy Mauger Finley NSW and Mr Chris MacKenzie Timboon VIC join the current Federal Council delegates in forming the Jersey Australia Board of Management. The new board is set to meeting either late August or early September in Melbourne. During June the five year association with the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders came to an end with the BSCBA National Council voting to shift its contract for registration and classification services to HFAA. While disappointed by the decision Jersey Australia intends to manage the changeover as swiftly and as smoothly as possible while honouring classification applications received prior to the decision. At the final Federal Council meeting the majority of states voted to retain the rule that bull dams must be classified before bull registration application can be processed. There was no support for the idea that the incoming board consider seeking a quotation for HFAA classification services a decision strongly supported by the current Classification Panel. “The plain truth is that the majority

of Jersey members want their animals classified by Jersey Classifiers and are happy that these evaluations lend a within breed confidence to young bull type proofs here in Australia”, Mr Carson commented. Finally I would like to apologise for the delay in this edition of our Journal the fact that I was away with the 18th World Jersey Cattle Bureau Conference (a report will appear in the next issue) as well as the Annual General Meetings of Federal Council and Victorian Branch (a report also to appear in the next issue). Congratulations to Geoff Heazlewood on receiving his Life Membership at the recent Tasmanian Branch AGM and to the CDJBC for a terrific three day Jersey event and for shaking off the “there’s no money in the West” tag with the terrific Colac Classic Sale average.

Canadian trip pays for itself Leading Australian Jersey breeder, Wayne Kuhne, not only saw some fabulous dairy cattle on his recent tour of eastern Canada but he managed to pay his own way by selling a number of embryos in the process! The Kuhne family milks up to 400 cows at Bushlea Jerseys, near Koonwarra in Victoria’s South Gippsland. Among its many high-profile progeny is the Semex sire, Bushlea Brook Biestar (JEBROOKBI), who is regarded as one of the best udder sires in Australia. Wayne linked up with a group of 22 South African Jersey breeders who spent 10 days travelling throughout Ontario and Quebec in April. The group visited more than 20 dairy farms, including the well-known RJ Farms and Bridon Farms. Wayne was particularly impressed by the daughters of leading Semex sire, SHF Centurion Sultan, that he saw throughout the tour. “Sultan was easily the bull I liked the most in terms of the beautiful milking cows he sired,” Wayne said. “Every farm we went to had a couple and they were all very uniform, with good rear udders and nice frames.

We also saw a lot of young daughters of Comerica and Pine Haven Senior – they were everywhere and they looked very good. We haven’t used a lot of Senior but after seeing those heifers we’ll certainly use him fairly heavily in the next joining period.” The group also visited the Quebec Spring Show and Sale. Wayne said Canadian breeders appeared more willing to use young, unproven sires and placed great emphasis on the heifer classes. “The show is their first look at the next generation of animals,” he said. “The heifer classes were big and strong and there was a lot of interest in them. I think this is because Canadian breeders are very willing to use unproven bulls out of strong maternal lines. “If they see a calf or yearling that they really like, they’ll go home and use that bull even if he doesn’t have a proof. Here in Australia we tend to wait until a bull gets a proof before we use him.” Capping off a great tour, Wayne sold 10 embryos and has had strong interest in a further 20 or more from South African breeders he met on the

tour. The embryos were from Bushlea Etta Fernleaf 7, Bushlea Lester Iris 9 – the Supreme Champion Jersey at this year’s International Dairy Week – and Bushlea Brook Maybell. “One was a young guy who wants to introduce better maternal lines into his herd, while another was the president of Jersey South Africa,” he said. A partnership between four of the leading artificial breeding organisations in Canada, the company operates in more than 80 countries throughout the world. Gippsland Dairy Youth Group 2008 Gippsland Dairy Youth Group has been very active in the last few months. Firstly we competed in the HFAA Youth Challenge at International Dairy Week finishing 5th out of 12 teams. This year Jersey Australia sponsored our team and we would like to thank them for their support. Secondly, on Sunday 16th March we held our 9th Annual All Breeds Youth Show at the Warragul Show Grounds. We were successful in receiving naming rights sponsorship from the Drouin and District Community Bendigo Bank. We had 40 animals shown from 3 months to 2 ½ years in milk with Ben Govett from Dingee, judging. All the breeds were well represented. Parade x Declo x Brook

The Jersey Breed’s Latest Rising Star No matter the breed, each subsequent generation of cattle is dominated by a few select individuals. The Jersey breed is no exception, having had its share of outstanding sires including Duncan, Generator, Lester, Sooner, Berretta and more recently Perimiter. On the female side, the dams of these sires also deserve a closer look as these cows also transmitted their breed leading qualities and have been important to the progression of the Jersey breed.

Duncan Belle, her daughters and granddaughters have dominated the Jersey Lifetime Profit Index (LPI). Belle’s granddaughters Piedmont Declo Belle EX-94 2* and her daughters dominate the top 5 LPI female listing with Declo Belle herself still ranking in the top 5 as an 8 Yr Old.

The latest star to rise from the Semex Jersey Program is JEBLACKSTONE Lencrest Blackstone. Like the great sires before him, he is quickly becoming a driving force in the industry, leading the index charts with dominating production and type qualities. A BW Parade, Blackstone transmits extreme yields and strong, functional type to his progeny, just like his sire . . . and just like his dam Declo Belle. Blackstone's 3rd dam Duncan Belle EX-3 completes five generations of EX cows with an average 5.5% fat and is herself a matriarch of an increasingly successful family tree. Bred by the Rankins from the famous Cedarcrest herd in Alabama, Belle also dominated the show ring being a two-time Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Grand Champion, as well as a Grand Champion at the Central National Jersey Show at World Dairy Expo. Her production record matched her show record winnings producing 9,539 kilograms of 5.5% fat and 4.2% protein in 305 days in her 4th lactation. These merits, as well as her ability to transmit her potential on to her progeny, earned her the Cow of the Century Award from US Jersey and 20* from Jersey Canada.

Piedmont Declo Belle EX-94 2* Just like Duncan Belle, Declo Belle has claimed some of the breed’s top show honours, being named the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Intermediate Champion as a Jr 3 Yr Old in 2003. Additionally, Declo Belle was a top producer with great yields and components, scoring EX-94 at 5 Years with 11,238 milk, 4.9% 548 kgs Fat and 3.8% 433 kgs Protein in 305 days.

Her gene power did not go unnoticed by Semex, as her sons and grandsons including the internationally acclaimed Perimiter, Legacy and Senior gained recognition and popularity around the world, each quickly tracing back to Duncan Belle herself.

“Using different sires on her, the results were always similar. Her daughters are all strong, hard-working cows with deep bodies and shallow, well-attached udders. At our farm the Belles are the easiest cow to look after . . . virtually maintenance free!” These same qualities are available through Declo Belle’s son JEBLACKSTONE Lencrest Blackstone. Blackstone daughters have very well-attached mammary systems, with extreme support from a deep crease. They are very solid on well-shaped feet with a great depth of heel. These daughters are tall and long-bodied with great openness of rib, and in both the United States and Canada, they are the top producing 2 Yr. Olds in their herds.

River Ridge Jerseys – Embracing Technology By Linda Houghton

River Ridge Jersey stud is located between the South Maroochy River and the Blackall Ranges, close to Nambour and only 25 minutes from Noosa in QLD. Ramon and Cathy Devere are the third generation of Ramon’s family to farm the 101 ha property. After his parents Dennis and Irene retired from farming in 2001, Ramon and Cathy began the journey towards succession, Hence River Ridge jerseys was formed, Ramon And Cathy have operated the property ever since by themselves. “It has been a tough succession process, as the property is located close to the coast, and land values are high. Today, this is the fastest growing area in Australia, and as a result the high cost of land is prohibitive for those wanting to get into dairying” Ramon said. The property largely consists of fertile heavy black soils and the terrain varies from river flats to steep and rocky hills. “An advantage here is that we get the coastal rainfall here – during the recent downpour we recorded 14 inches of rain. The majority of the pasture is tropical grass, and we have 18ha under Ezie shift irrigation from the Maroochy River. If the rainfall forecast is looking steady, I take a gamble and sow 10 or 15ha to ryegrass and clover, hoping we get the regular rain to achieve multiple grazings. We just concentrate on grass, grain and hay, I wouldn’t consider using a mixing wagon – I think the capital expense and workload associated with them is too high,” Ramon said . The Deveres milk a mixed breed herd of 150 cows – which is currently 70% Jersey. “My parents ran a predominantly Friesian herd, and while I was working for them I started to cross-breed with Jerseys . Now I am leaning towards preferring the Jersey to other breeds – although I will continue to keep some Friesians and Brown Swiss in the herd.” Ramon likes to keep his finger on the pulse by doing his own book work, it’s good to be able to budget and keep a close eye on cash flow. They also utilize Q.D.A.S To monitor annual figures. And compare them to regional averages. Easy dairy is used for herd management and E-Reg, Ramon says it’s the way to go. All two year olds are classified once a year to make sure sire selection is heading in the right direction. The great things about Jerseys are their high tolerance to summer heat, ease of handling and they forage well – they are good all-rounders” Ramon said. The dairy is an 8-a-side swing-over herringbone, with automatic cup removers and a feed system. “I am now concentrating on breeding the best commercial cows that I can. Personally, I would rather see a good commercial cow in the show-ring than an attractive cow that doesn’t produce milk. Until you calve a heifer down and get them into the dairy, you don’t know how well they will perform – regardless of how they look. Some really ‘unattractive’ cows milk very well!” Bulls currently being used by River Ridge include Brookbi, Jace, Action, Parade, Rhmona, Blair, Iatola and Senior. “I go through the catalogues and pick bulls with the highest positive litres, Fat & protein – then I look at other traits, overall type and udders, I try to correctively mate to improve the cows, using the sires I have selected”, Ramon said. “Long

established Jersey studs have the advantage of generations of good breeding behind them, so I hope with the assistance of new technology that we can fast-track that process. I am looking to breed cows with stature, and a bone quality combined with a good udder. To achieve this, I recently completed an embryo transfer course; it was very full on

— Jersey JerseyJournal June / July 2008

and featured practical tuition in flushing, grading embryos and implanting. My knowledge and experience from performing AI for 18 years helped me to master the procedures, and now I intend to regularly flush the top 5% cows in my herd and freeze the embryos. I prefer to freeze eggs and then transfer into young cows 7 days after natural heat, therefore alleviating the need to synchronize batches, instead of inseminating a cow I’ll just put in an embryo instead. I prefer to use unregistered, or cross-bred stock. I have spent around $10K on set-up and equipment, which I consider to be a positive investment in improving the herd. In 10 years time, I think this technology will be as commonplace on farms as AI” Ramon said. Ramon and Cathy have a unique sense of humour, which is evident by their choice of cow names – with one favourite bloodline in the herd dubbed the ‘Tossa’ family. “I think some breeders can get a bit carried away with cow family names, with the result being some incredibly long, complex titles out there. I look for something a bit cheeky and different – now we can proudly tell people we have some ‘Tossas’ in our herd!” Ramon said. The Deveres supply National Foods, who are major players in the largely liquid milk market. “Queensland is a liquid milk state, and there is always a shortage and as a result, processors are paying us well for it, and the market looks stable. However, in the next five years, I think the biggest challenges we will face include urban encroachment, increased land values and input costs. In addition, the duration of the drought and long term climate change will impact on our decision making” Ramon said. With Ramon and Cathy expecting their first child later this year, they will look at employing some interim help, and hope that Dennis and Irene ‘the travelling gypsies’ might be around to chip in and give them a hand. In the meantime, they intend to install an auto-wash system in the dairy, as part of their plan to cut down on labour time and keep things simple. An automatic calf-feeder has already proved to be a winner. “It feeds 35 calves per day, and we have seen the benefits in the far superior calves we have now. Also, it has really saved labour time, as it only takes ten minutes to clean the machine and fill it - the days of messing around with buckets are over. Another winner is the self-feeding grain bin, the heifers just help themselves, and it was worth the money. I would rather put money into labour saving technology and procedures than part-time help,” Ramon said. The Deveres also enjoy showing their cows locally, normally taking a team to the Gympie, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane Royal shows, depending on available help at the time. Ramon is also currently Vice President of the Sunshine Coast Cattle Club, which sees a good turnout each year to the annual calf show held on the Deveres property every October. 5 The Deveres ensure they plan ahead, and are keeping an eye on their future. “I think it is important for operators to stay focussed, use labour saving technology where possible, to have a vision and a plan for the future of their herd, without always following trends. Cathy and I are looking forward to dairying into the future, enjoying life and creating a high producing, strong commercial herd,” Ramon said.

BEST OF ALL WORLDS at BOS TRADING After a very exciting April proof run Bos Trading has arguably the best team of Jerseys available! Oomsdale Jace Gratitude is a breed leader in more ways than one. GANNON, as he is known, is a Jace son from the very famous 2 generation EX-90 cow Oomsdale Gordo Goldie GratitudeEX90 who has had many high profile sons go into test with Gannon being the highest available son at number 4 on JPI. His ability to provide the industry with size (+3.70), strength and power (+2.30) and rump width (+1.70) is unequalled! Added to that is his remarkable production ability with Gannon transmitting over 2000 pounds of milk which is evident in the open rib of his daughters. Gannon also excels in his udder traits with high and wide rear udders and extra length to the teat a feature. We will have sexed semen in July this year. Impuls from Denmark is still very strong with proofs around the world cementing his name in

20 — Jersey JerseyJournal June / July 2008

history. Now with over 6600 daughters he is here to stay! Implus is the No.1 available Jersey bull in America and Denmark. On a recent trip to Denmark, Tim Weller and Coleman Baulch saw a large number of daughters of Impuls with just about every Jersey breeder milking some. Tim Weller was amazed with the similarity to the 1st crop daughters he saw 3 years earlier. Impuls daughters display so much size and length of frame with udders that are extremely soft in texture. They are high and wide enough in the rear with the teats placed at the bottoms of the quarters. If you are looking for an outcross sire with components, Impuls is an easy choice. Also available sexed! DJ May is the new generation from Denmark, being sired by Mirage (Malcolm son) who left daughters with amazing udders. Mirage carried this trait onto his son with DJ May being the highest bull in Denmark for overall udder. His daughters do display

some extra strength and size in the front end and are taller than average in Denmark. His udders are extremely strongly attached in the front and very shallow, with a strong ligament and great texture. Denmark is a world leader in breeding for fertility and health traits, DJ May sits at 129 for daughter fertility, 121 for SCS and 114 for persistency. In Denmark farmers have to call in a vet to treat mastitis and all info is entered by the vet onto their national database. We believe their proofs. Manhatten has now received his 1st Australian proof, confirming his ability to transmit components and strength. At 126 APR he is good for 3rd position on the list. His daughters do seem to milk on well into their lactation. Manhatten is one of the best bulls in the breed for getting cows in calf. Please ask your local Bos rep for a copy of the 2008 Directory for more info and pedigrees of 3 exciting new progeny test bulls!

Garcola Jerseys by Linda Houghton Gary Maddern trained in accountancy and even tried out a desk job - however, his innate childhood love of dairy farming and the Jersey breed won-out, and he established and registered Garcola Jersey Stud in 1990. As a kid, Gary used to help his uncle on his farm; the Erindale Jersey Stud, and really enjoyed dairying and helping to prepare show cows. In 1993 he exhibited one of his own cows at the Adelaide Show, and won the 3YO Dry Class with “Mannanarie Garnets Tiara” (bred by Toni Robinson) before going on to win Supreme Champion at a country show. Over the next few years he worked on local properties, building on his knowledge and experience in dairying. For the past eleven years, Gary and Christine and their four children; Asmaile 16 (an Arabic name from his Greatgrandfather), Ian 14, Storm 12 and Warwick 8, have been share farming on a 130 acre property just outside the South Australian town of Meadows. Situated about an hours drive south of Adelaide, the property has a backdrop of picturesque views over the Meadows township, and the dry-farm terrain ranges from hilly to some flat areas, with a high rainfall in normal conditions. The soil is fertile, with good grasses and clover pastures. “However the drought has certainly been felt here - during the past five years out of the last ten we have only received low rainfalls,” Gary said. “We worked hard to steadily improve our herd quality and increased herd numbers to 70, and in 2000 we leased an extra 30 cows. Production was up and we made more milk, but then the price dropped post-deregulation and input costs escalated. Following that, in 2003 the drought hit us really hard, and after reviewing our operating costs, we cut our herd numbers back to 60, adjusted the feed rations and looked for ways to improve production by as economical means as possible” Gary said. “Things are looking better now, and our production last year was up by 20% on the previous year, and we are using a higher food intake to help support and maintain it. With better genetics we are seeing better cows coming through the herd – our younger cows bred on the property are out-producing the older cows. Some of the outstanding cows were by our homebred bulls as well – not all of them were from AI bulls. In the early years, I used Semex bulls such as Imperial, Galaxy and Saturn - which were a good influence on the herd, along with Lester sons. In recent times, our better younger cows are from Apache, Julian, Hallmark, Kody, Festival and Jacobus. I do all my own AI, and match the cows to the bulls with a corrective approach to improve each cow’s worst feature. I have recently used Militia and the calves are looking very promising – they are large, and are good strong feeders”. “What we are aiming for is size and capacity – but without a good udder there is no production or longevity. By keeping up with the latest information in the bull catalogues and proofs and networking with other breeders, we are seeing better cows coming through” Gary said. Favourite cow families in the Garcola Jersey herd include Garnets, Redheads, Prims, Hayleys, Ladys, Golden Girls, Violets and Daisy’s. “They are all solid foundation families within our

— JerseyJournal June / July 2008

herd, and most of our show cows are selected from them. We find that there is normally at least one good show cow in each of those families” Gary said. The dairy is an old six-unit walk-through in good condition, so milking 60 cows takes around two hours, twice per day. Calving is split over autumn/spring to avoid the summer heat. We don’t Teat Spray or Dry Cow and still have low cell counts. There is a limited amount of irrigation when water is available via a dam, pumped to hand-shifted sprinklers. A bore supplies the house, dairy and stock troughs. “There are no plans for expansion here, as properties in the area are being snapped up by beef producers and land developers,” Gary said. Over the years, Gary has racked up considerable experience as a judge, notably as a junior judge at Adelaide, Melbourne and Mt Gambier Shows, and he is now a member of the South Australian Judging Panel, and has since judged at SA shows many times. In addition, Gary attended National Youth Camps as a teenager, and has been involved in preparing cattle for IDW competitors, and has also competed as a handler. Gary is also currently President of the Strathalbyn Agricultural Society and Vice President of the Mt Compass Jersey Cattle Club. “I really enjoy shows and have won many Championships– I don’t think anything compares with the thrill of seeing a line-up of wonderful cows in the ring. While I can see the attraction of the on-farm challenge format in that it is less time-consuming and easier to compete, you don’t get to see the cows side-by-side. We have had success in heifer competitions over the years, but I still prefer the more balanced view of a show lineup” Gary said. “As a judge, I look for correct conformation, and a balanced cow with a good udder and capacity. Also, a good temperament is evident in the ring by how well they parade – while recognising the skills of the handler, of course” Gary said. It is clear that the Maddern family enjoys the thrill of the ring and showing, with the whole family involved. “Christine grew up on a Jersey Stud farm – her family ran Hallettview Jersey Stud, and she attended cattle shows before she could walk. We now donate an annual trophy at the Mt Pleasant Jersey Autumn Fair in memory of Barry Swift, Christine’s father. You could say our family is a ready-made show team! Our eldest son represented SA in the IDW Youth Challenge the last 2 years (this year they won), and has his own cows in our herd. He selects his own bulls, and has won several handler awards as well. All of our children enjoy leading at shows, and they also all have a keen interest in sport – which adds up to a busy schedule for them and us. Christine and I enjoy farmwalks and seeing other herds – travelling is something we will do when the kids are older” Gary said. “I think the dairy industry has a bright future for those that remain in it, providing that the good prices hold into the future. The demand for milk, cheese and other dairy products will always be there. I think future challenges to the industry will include rising input costs, water and environmental issues and land costs. In addition, keen young farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to get started in dairying. Sometimes people hang onto positions too long instead of encouraging younger ones to be involved. My advice to our eldest son is to finish his education and to continue to acquire and consolidate assets to help him achieve his dream. I would like to see anyone interested in the dairy industry having a real opportunity to get into it” Gary said.

MCDOWALL SUCESS WITH SEXED SEMEN By Richard Meredith

Peter McDowall and Tim Sedgley, ABS District Sales Manager, Warrnambool with sexed semen calves by Dee (Holstein) and Iatola (Jersey).

Sexed semen boosts confidence in heifer AI Using sexed semen has had an unexpected side benefit for the McDowall family who run a mixed herd of 520 purebred Holsteins and Jerseys at Childers Cove in western Victoria. According to Paul McDowall a Holstein heifer calf calves easier than a bull calf. As the ABS Sexation program guarantees up to 90% female calves, using sexed semen has given them the confidence to use Holstein semen with the Holstein heifers and Jersey semen with the Jerseys, where once they would have used Jersey semen over the lot as a safety precaution.

“We want to keep both breeds in our herd,” says Paul. “Using the sexed semen has been a way of avoiding cross-bred calves. “Dad had a high percentage of Jerseys so we are increasing Holstein numbers. The sexed semen allows us to get pure-bred calves from both breeds first time round.” Paul, who manages the farm with his brother Peter, sees a place for both breeds in their business. “The Jerseys don’t eat as much feed; the Holsteins are higher producing but they eat more. Both are efficient producers in their own way. We don’t have any trouble with them because they are all well fed.” The McDowalls have used AI on heifers for the past 15 years in order to build calf numbers. Tim Sedgley from ABS Australia synchronises the heifers to produce a tight calving pattern and cut down on work.

Well grown heifers get pregnant easier “The key to getting them into calf successfully is attention to detail,” says Paul. Apart from feeding them well to ensure they are well grown and in good condition, the McDowalls monitor closely for infections and get all heifers checked by a fertility vet to make sure they are ready to get in calf. The introduction of sexed semen, which they started using on the heifers four years ago, has enabled them to build heifer numbers and quality quickly.

18— Jersey JerseyJournal June / July 2008

“With conception rates averaging just 5% below conventional semen, we can cull heavily to improve the herd overall,” says Paul. “We’re getting to a level we want now and we can sell off 50-60 cows a year comfortably.” They have found the well-grown heifers have higher conception rates and concentrate on getting heifer health to optimum levels before submitting them. “Our aim is the get more heifer calves from our best heifers,” says Paul. “Getting the best genetics out of the best young stock gives us the highest rate of genetic gain.” Tim Sedgley also advises on bull selection through ABS’ Genetic Management System (GMS), focusing on production and type and the avoidance of inbreeding. “It’s especially important to manage inbreeding with Jerseys because there are some very dominant lines,” says Paul. They have used Iatola, Saber, Mentor and Flowerpower from the Jerseys and Dee, Luckystrike, Garrison, Lucente and Raphael from the Holstein line up. Although they recently bought some heifers from northern Victoria to take advantage of the good season in western Victoria and the current high milk prices, Paul says they prefer to breed their own replacements to keep out disease. “You have to pay a lot for good cattle but with our sexed semen program I don’t think we’ll have any need to buy outside cattle anymore,” he said.

Outlook for Dairy looking Bright Brian Newson Elders Dairy Division If there is anything like a reasonable weather pattern in dairy areas, the results for dairyfarmers in the new 2008/09 season should be good. While costs of key inputs such as energy, fertiliser and grain will remain high, the likelihood is that prices from factories for milk will also be high. In the official forecasts by the Federal Government’s agency ABARE released last week, it was indicated “Australian farm gate milk prices are forecast to rise by 10 percent to 54 cents a litre in 2008-09 after averaging around 49 cents a litre in 2007-08”. The good news is that in practice it is anticipated most manufacturers will have a season’s opening price around the 50 cents a litre level - the highest opening prices on record. A real challenge for Australian dairyfarmers will be in the ability to increase production to take advantage of the anticipated higher milk prices. ABARE predicts that in addition to the high cost of major inputs, the ability of many farmers to lift milk output will be limited by “lead times in herd rebuilding and continued low irrigation water allocations (particularly in the Murray Darling Basin”. For these reasons, ABARE believe there will be only a small increase in total milk production in Australia in 2008-09 by 1.6% to 9.25 billion litres. In the 2007-08 season just finished, it is estimated milk flow nation

wide totalled 9.1 billion litres, 5% below the 2006-07 total of 9.583 billion litres - this means that because of successive dry seasons, Australia’s milk flow has dropped by 20% since the peak of 11.3 billion litres in 2002-03. However, ABARE are forecasting a rise in the rate of increase in milk, suggesting that by 2013, Australian milk flow could have reached over 11 billion litres. World dairy prices are expected to remain strong in the foreseeable future as demand continues to outpace supply. The supply position is unlikely to improve quickly - Australia’s export quantities are reduced because of lower milk production, exports from the EU are declining, and some major dairy areas in New Zealand are still feeling the impact of drought. The latest Update from Dairy Australia reports that in the Waikato region which produces 32% of total NZ milk, “despite heavy rains in April, pasture growth was down around 20% on average for this time of year, and there were growing concerns on availability of feed in coming months”. Rarely a week goes by without reference in the business pages to investor interest in agribusiness and particularly dairy. With high milk prices, strong demand for cows, both for herd rebuilding in Australia and for export, and rising farm prices, the outlook for dairy is promising. The reality will lie in fuel and fertiliser prices and other costs - and, of course, the weather. JerseyJournal June / July 2008 — 11
