behindthescenes It would be amiss of me not to begin by congratulating the Northern District Jersey Breeders Club for the amazing “Jersey Extravaganza” program that incorporated the inaugural Jersey Australia Annual General Meeting. Such an inspiring event attended by Jersey enthusiasts from all states of Australia who, I’m quite sure, all headed home with a genuine glimpse of the unified national Jersey fellowship and the positive global outlook for the Jersey breed.
It is amazing the support this organisation enjoys from its passionate membership and I hope that those amongst you who support all the Jersey Australia services might consider applying for the 2009/2010 Jersey Australia Gold Member award. The application form with the criteria is available as a lift out in this edition if you didn’t receive a lift out or want any further information please contact Jersey House.
A full report on the Extravaganza will appear in our next publication but until then it is appropriate to congratulate all members who supported the Jersey Australia Research Fund semen raffle, the following winners were drawn randomly at the AGM as advertised. From World Wide Sires, sexed semen to the value of $500, went to Milton Johnston, Taree, NSW. The Bos Trading, sexed semen to the value of $500, went to the ticket held by Peter Ness Mt Compass South Australia and the five straws of Blackstone from Semex went to Bruce Hill from Carpendeit VIC. Once again, to these A.I. companies, thank you for your valuable support.
Back in April/May 2007 the Jersey Journal profiled well known Queensland Junior member, Tahnee King and I’m very pleased to inform the membership that Tahnee has successfully applied for a World Jersey Cattle Bureau Travel Scholarship to Canada. I know that Russell Gammon, Jersey Canada is very keen to see that Tahnee gets as much possible out of her 6 month visit which will include working on a number of registered herds as well as attending the The Royal Winter Fair and Dairy Expo. We all wish her all the very best for her trip and look forward to Tahnee sharing some of her experience upon her return.
At the time of writing 10 Jersey Australia members had confirmed their ability to take part in the USA Trade mission that amongst other activities will take in the Jersey Worlds Combine in 2009 program in Ohio during June 2009. It is hoped that apart from promoting Australian Jersey’s to the world that Jersey Australia might influence the global Jersey classification review that is also part of the event. On behalf of the Jersey Australia board I wish all delegates a wonderful trip and hope I may be able to persuade some sort of trip report for the Journal upon your return.
Finally, I would like to encourage all unfinancial members to renew their memberships if you haven’t already done so as the office is currently collating an update to the Jersey Australia membership listing that will be placed on the Jersey Australia website, with a printed version likely to be distributed later in the year. stud name used to belong to my Grandfather on the Goodfellow side who was a one eyed Holstein breeder. (My grandfather on my mum’s side had jerseys.) I have a couple of Astound cows, and one got 3rd in her Class at IDW, in the Youth Show. I also have a Future daughter, and have an ET heifer calf out of Delwyn Park Martha’s Joy 247 – which I named Gowerpark Gaupo Martha’s Joy.’ Chloe said.

‘While Dad does the AI for me, I select my own bulls, and those I currently like are Gaupo and Astound, plus I would like to try Resurrection. Dad finds the Jerseys a bit of hassle in the dairy because they are so much smaller than the Holsteins, and I admit they do react differently to things – Jerseys seem to notice everything that’s going on, especially if something has changed in the shed’ Chloe said. Chloe is 16 and currently in Year 10 at the Kyabram P-12 College, studying VCE Legal Studies, History, Maths, English and Indonesian. ‘Next semester I will be studying Agriculture, which I am really looking forward to’ Chloe said.

How Chloe Goodfellow came to love the Jersey breed is best described by the story of a tiny Jersey calf called Pegasus. ‘Pegasus weighed just 11kg when she was born, and I reared her inside the house in a washing basket for the first few nights. She was so tiny, her feet were the size of 20-cent pieces, and she could go anywhere she wanted around the farm – we couldn’t keep her in! We all spoilt her rotten with special treats and cuddles, and her personality was the biggest thing about her. Her size didn’t seem to hold her back – she would not be bossed around by anyone, or the Holsteins in the herd – she would stand up to them’ Chloe said. Sadly, Pegasus became sick after producing a calf without any trouble, and never fully recovered. ‘At least we gave her the best life we could, and every chance to thrive – but we were really sad when she died, as she was only three years old’ Chloe said. Chloe, along with her Dad and sister Kira, live on a 70-acre dairy farm near Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley (Victoria). The Goodfellows milk a herd of 40 cows all year-round, and Chloe’s earliest memories on the farm are of being a bit scared of the Holstein cows. ‘They are so big, and I used to be really scared of them, so Dad bought my sister and I a Jersey calf each. Mine was a heifer, so I named her Rosie, which was my Grandfather’s favourite flower. That started me off with Jerseys, and I still have Rosie’s daughter in the milking herd today. I have 5 Jerseys at present and hope to breed more in the future – my
Chloe has always enjoyed farm work. ‘I’ve never been interested in getting a part-time job like most of my friends – as I just love working on the farm. My favourite jobs are to feed the calves, and put out the hay – but I enjoy all of it, and I find it very relaxing. I guess it is because I really love animals – I have a cat, a dog and two budgies, and they are the ‘pets’.’ When not studying or working around the farm, Chloe also enjoys catching up with friends, and scrap booking, but would rather work on the farm than play sport. ‘It takes up a lot of your time, and if I’m not studying, I am outside helping Dad’ Chloe said. Chloe enjoys showing and attended the 2009 IDW, and also takes Jerseys and Holsteins to the Kyabram, Shepparton and Melbourne shows. ‘My sister Keira (13) and I enjoy training the cows to lead, and we wash and groom them. It’s exciting when you lead them in the ring – you can never guess how you’re doing, and it’s a nice surprise when you win. In this year’s Youth Challenge, we got third place (North West Holstein Sub-branch) and I learnt a lot – everyone lead differently, so we had to work as a team and sort it out. It’s a good social time as well, meeting lots of other kids who are into cows’ Chloe said. ‘I’m not sure where I am heading career-wise, but I will be studying Year 12, and continue to study Agriculture and Maths – as I really enjoy both of these subjects. Perhaps working in the Agri-Business sector could be a good choice for me – as both of my favourite subjects would be utilised’ Chloe said. ‘As for the long-term future, I would love to be a farmer, but I think it’s wise to be realistic and continue to study and gain qualifications in another career, just in case I can’t achieve that dream. Things are certainly tough at present, and the future looks uncertain. On a positive note, we had 8mm of rain today – so at least that will help our oat crops to grow – hopefully things are picking up!’ Chloe said.

If anyone had told Pat and Rosemary Roache when they started dairying in 1982 that they would go on to breed better bulls in Australia than Top Brass, Lester and Berretta they would have laughed at their craziness. But after 24 years of milking cows that is exactly what they have done. The recent 2009 April ABV has unearthed their latest contribution to the improvement of the Jersey breed – LARFALOT Lightwood Lucrative. The Roache story has humble beginnings milking 38 cows in a walk through dairy but Rosemary happily admits she’s not afraid of hard work. Or being laughed at. “I don’t care what people think. I’m not afraid to ask questions. Why would you aim to be anything but the best you can?” It’s this attitude has been a key part of how she and her husband Pat, who ran a 170-head dairy on the fringe of the west Victorian township of Terang, have come to supply some of the nation’s leading jersey genetics less than 25 years after entering the industry.

the Roaches A conversation with Rosemary – who has also raised five children and been an active member of her local community - could be likened to reading a book of dairying proverbs. “If you’re not out in front, you’re trailing behind.” “Learn something new every day”. “Love what you do.” “Think positive”. “If you don’t ask, you’ll never know”. Some of the best jersey bulls offered in recent years; bulls such as OUTINFRONT, BADGER and now LARFALOT, have all been produced from the Roache farm, purchased in 1982. As the years went by, Rosemary and Pat wrote their own rulebook on building their herd. “The more you paid for them, the worse they were,” Rosemary laughs. “Cows with meaty udders had little milk. Cows that milked out quickly to a rag were in fact our best cows!” “It was always an advantage for us that we had no pre-conceived ideas. We didn’t know about ‘can’t’. We quickly discovered we couldn’t afford to BUY a great herd of cows, so we set out to breed our own. I badly wanted to own a cow that was a nice as

the ones in the AI catalogues – little did I know we would end up with a whole herd of them!” Rosemary admits they would never have achieved what they have done without herd testing the herd. “Herd Testing doesn’t cost, it pays, and you only need to identify an early case of mastitis and a couple of ‘loafers’ to recoup herd test costs for a year. The other unseen benefit is that as the years pass all the breeding and herd test results build up in a pedigree and ABVs of your individual cows which proves to be a great asset”, she says. Taking one step forward and two steps back, the Roache family set simple goals, always keeping in mind that their purpose was to breed both for type, performance and profit, on the best possible pasture. Admitting it took her “years” to get her head around the “jargon” involved in the selection of bulls, Rosemary made her first foray into herd improvement with the purchase of 3 Jersey heifers from a noted high ASI herd dispersal in 1983. “One of the heifers was by the New Zealand bull Paitu Yama out of a progeny test YDB heifer. The heifer was named ‘Dorcas’ and she had 8 heifer calves for us. Her first influential daughter was ‘Elaine’ by OOBL. She was bred to Highland Magic Douglas resulting in ‘Failane’ she was mated to Lester resulting in ‘Fairlie’ and she was mated to Alf resulting in ‘Fairy’ and she was mated to Berretta resulting in our first AB proven bull OUTINFRONT. The second ‘Dorcas’ daughter to have a big impact was ‘Gazelle’ sired by the NZ bull SPAN. ‘Gazelle’ milked 10 lactations and classified Excellent. Gazelle’s first daughter Dorcas 2nd won the local On Farm Challenge and produced the now famous cow Lightwood Bambi Alf. Bambie is the dam of BADGER, her first calf was a daughter by Berretta named ‘Amber’. ‘Amber’ is the mother of LARFALOT.” This “Dorcas” cow family with 26 years of AI breeding and herd testing behind it now has it’s bloodlines in some of Australia’s leading Jersey bulls and in numerous cows around Australia and South Africa. BADGER has been one of the most heavily used Jersey bulls in Australia and South Africa in recent years and LARFALOT will be the next based on his first ABV and forward semen orders. Another discovery the couple made early was the

‘lottery’ of progeny test bulls. “It was like a punt on the future”, Rosemary explains. “We were lucky to get quite a few of the future top bulls, but it drove the semen sellers mad as they tried to sell us the latest new bull and I told them we already had that bull’s granddaughters!” “My thinking has always been, ‘we live in a world of change. Don’t let it frighten you, embrace it – gently,” Rosemary advises today. “Don’t go overboard about new ideas if you are concerned. We had made a decision to go and milk all Holsteins at one stage when the Jersey breed was hijacked by breeders not willing to embrace AI and there were precious few local bulls available – remember J444? The introduction of North American genetics gave us added diversity and we embraced the best genetics available and we have never looked back”. “In 24 years we went from nobodies to somebodies, thanks to the past breeders of all those amazing bulls we built our herd on. LARFALOT is made up of Australian, New Zealand and American blood. He looks like what the dairy industry and farmers of the future need. It gives us great joy to be able to give something back. A bull who can breed profitable cows to support our dairy farming families. A bull whose name will appear in pedigrees for generations to come. Breeding cows can be such fun!” Today her passion for herd improvement is obvious and she can’t help but share her knowledge and experience. “There is so much joy in herd improvement. Why milk mediocre cows? Keep in mind why people milk cows – to make a living. Why use a bull with little or no ASI? The catalogues say minus for protein, minus for fat, minus for litres but look at the pretty udders; beautiful because there is no strain in holding little milk. The sad thing I have noticed is the so called type bulls often leave plain daughters that wouldn’t have enough milk to feed a cat!”. “Milking can be a bore or a delight, to see your farm and herd improving every year is worth the time put in. Herd Recording, using high ABV bulls, has been worth every cents and registering our cows made us look harder at our cows. Genetics Australia came and looked at our Dorcas cow family and the rest became history. Milking Jersey’s has been exciting, profitable, a lot of hard work but above all, a whole lot of fun”.

Toowoomba Royal Show Jersey Judge – Troy Mauger’s Comments
After much anticipation of coming to Queensland to judge the Jerseys and to see the improvement within the breed, I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The numbers and quality were outstanding in all classes. A feature was the dairy qualities of all winners including excellent dairy bone, combined with strength, width and openness particularly through the chest and fore rib. All cattle had excellent feet and legs. The Juvenile Champion (Braeburn Wata Melys) was a credit to her breeders and was everything I look for in a Dairy Heifer. The Intermediate Champion (Ascot Park Pitinos Beauty) was the
ideal Jersey Heifer with tremendous balance and an outstanding udder. This heifer has a great future and a lot to offer the Jersey gene pool. The Senior Champion (Brunchilli Imp Justine 2nd) was an extremely long cow. She had a capacious udder with excellent texture, width and strength of ligament. The best Uddered Cow (Ascot Park Sultans Beauty) was faultless in attachments, height, width, teat size and placement. It certainly was good to catch up with old and new friends of the Jersey Breed and see a different part of Australia. Brunchilli Imp Justine 2nd

Herd data shortfall costing export $$$
Australia is seriously selling itself short in the dairy cow export market, a leading UK cow geneticist has told a national conference. Hearing that Australian Holstein-Friesians average 4.3 lactations, Lucy Andrews scolded: “You damn well need a herd recording database. In UK we average 3.6 lactations and we’re one of the best in Europe. You should be exporting semen and embryos all over the world.” In the UK all cows in all registered herds must be fully documented. “No exceptions”, the blunt-talking speaker told HERD09 – Australia’s first dairy herd industry national summit. Coming from a dairying family in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak national park, Ms Andrews is responsible for policy, research breed development and genetic evaluation at Holstein UK. Genes are the fundamental pointer in cows, just as in humans. “Red hair and freckles means bad temper, my mother tells me,” laughed the redhead. Herd management is changing, and this is affecting trait selection, she said. “We no longer just select for yield and production, but for other traits such as locomotion and longevity.” She described the UK experience in breeding for longevity. “Locomotion is the most important trait for UK farmers it’s our biggest predictor of longevity, whereas here your most important trait is likability.” “But for us it’s a matter of locomotion. There’s a direct correlation. The three biggest reasons for culling are fertility, legs & feet, and mastitis. If a cow can’t walk she can’t milk.” Size was another factor in UK herds. “As the cow gets bigger, she doesn’t last as long,” Ms Andrews said. “You don’t need a cow big enough to drag a plough but you likewise don’t want a hat rack that will blow over in a breeze.” Angularity of the cow’s body is another pointer to its productive life and fertility. As cows grow thinner and more angular, they put energy into milk production and this compromises fertility, she said. “Cows have been getting bigger, thinner and more angular. They look like long-distance runners with no fat and they’re getting more difficult to get in-calf. It’s something we have focused on
addressing in the UK . “You’ve got to build the cow to suit your system and live as long as you like, producing as long as is profitable for your system. “As herds get bigger, the managers stop managing cows and start managing people. We’ve got the same challenges as you, such as labour on farms. Our kids don’t want to go back to milking cows, they go to university, they work in bars and they want a lie-in on Saturday morning. That’s what makes herd recording so important.” Sole database for lower cost, better service: UK dairy expert The Australian dairy industry should manage its herd data using a single integrated database, a visiting expert says.
Lucy Andrews, from UK, said she was shocked to find that there were 14 organisations involved in recording dairy information in Victoria, and more throughout Australia. “It means there are 14 organisations competing within Victoria to enter a farmer’s herd information. This must lead to a drop in service as people cut costs to stay in the market,” she said. Ms Andrews was addressing the Herd 09 conference in Bendigo last week. The UK has recently moved to a single database for the storage and analysis of a
wide rage of data. “The UK’s single, integrated database has revolutionised cow registration, milk recording and data integration and transformation for the benefit of farmers,” she said. “The introduction of the database has reduced the costs of herd recording by 23 percent.” The database holds all herd information, individual animal performance and parentage details, breed registration details, official medicine and movement information. It links with veterinary and official systems. “There is one place and one answer,” she said. “The system can be tailored to an individual farmers needs. Many companies seem to have forgotten that the farmer is our client and we are here to serve them.” Accuracy of data is critical for decisionmaking so there is strict validation across all systems. The system utilises single entry with multiple users. Bar code readers are used on milk samples to avoid transposition errors. The system has an error rate of 0.2 percent. “We are working on the principal of single entry-multiple use,” Ms Andrews said. “Good record keeping brings a good basis for management decisions and, therefore, profit.” The UK database operates via a web interface. She explained: “The web version avoids problems associated with expensive onfarm software, version numbers, and licensing while also bringing flexibility of use. Our farmers can check their farm records from an island in Barbados if they like.” Ms Andrews said that it was time for the Australian industry to take action for its farmers. “The industry has to take the initiative and start to innovate. Stop waiting for farmers to do the work. Industry must stick its neck out and invest to provide farmers the service they are paying for,” she said. The Australia dairy industry is currently investigating the use of a single dairy industry database. Although the current database arrangements have worked well for the industry in the past, there is still scope for improvement and the Herd 09 conference was suitable forum to announce the need to investigate innovation.

Winvarle and Starlight Jerseys at Dorrigo By Linda Houghton
Warrick and Kaylene Marks run a 171 hectare dairy farm on the green undulating Dorrigo plateau, which is 90kms inland from Coffs Harbour, on the northern NSW coast. Sitting 880 metres above sealevel, the property has commanding views of nearly 100km of coastline, and has been in Warrick’s family since 1903. Warrick and Kaylene have been running the property for last 25 years, along with their son Andrew (21) and daughter Naomi (17). At the time of interview, the property had received 33 inches of rain in just 5 days – almost half of their average yearly rainfall of 85 inches per year. ‘At the moment we are struggling with the problem of too much water – however we have good drainage and the water is finding its way to the coast. At times like this I really feel for the Victorian farmers and the dry conditions they are experiencing – rainfalls everywhere seem to have become unpredictable’ Warrick said. The Marks’ family have had their own tough times as well, with a natural disaster striking them hard in 2005 when a freakish, single lightning bolt killed 68 of their milking herd. ‘There was this massive blasting sound – Andrew and I were about 500 metres from where it hit, and we could see cows lying down everywhere. We couldn’t believe what we saw – the dead cows were unmarked, and some still had grass in their mouths. It seemed to be a quick death for them, at least. We were stunned – half of our milking herd and entire cow families and genetics had been wiped out in one hit’ Warrick said. ‘The next two years were very difficult, but we here heartened by the donation of cows from Jersey breeders. Lindsay Wilson coordinated the donation; and every single cow we received was a good one. There were no ‘duds’ amongst them – it was overwhelming. We will be eternally grateful for the generosity and kindness shown to
us by other breeders. The donated cows kept us going during a very tough time and allowed us to meet our milk supply quota. Lindsay used to ring us up every night as well – just to check up on us and make sure we weren’t feeling too down about it all’ Warrick said. The Marks’ now hold the dubious pleasure of a Guiness Book of Records entry – for the most cattle killed by a single bolt of lightning. ‘After it happened, our phone ran hot with nonstop calls from the media, and we had a lot of interest from scientific boffins – everyone was curious about the event, but it drove us nuts. We did learn that the high altitude position combined with volcanic soil and high ironstone content contributed to attracting lightning strikes. People are still interested in the story– everywhere we go, as soon as we say we’re from Dorrigo, people ask if we know the farmers whose cows had been struck by lightning’ Warrick said. Overall, things have settled down and the 200 head milking herd is now producing 6,000 litres per cow, with 5.5 Butter Fat and 4% Protein. The Marks’s supply Norco Dairy Company, which is solely involved in the liquid milk sales market. Occasionally, Warrick will consult with feed suppliers to get some advice, but basically grain is fed all year round at 4kg a day per cow (summertime) and in winter at 6kg per day, per cow plus a concentrate supplement. ‘Bloat is our biggest worry during summer – we put the oil in their feed everyday during the warmer months. I am also a big believer in providing the cows with fresh clean drinking water – I think it makes a big difference to their overall health. It’s certainly a good drop around here – this is the area where all of the bottled water comes from’ Warrick said. Milking takes around 2 hours in the 10-aside doubleup herringbone dairy, and recent improvements include the installation of 1km of cement walkways. JerseyJournal June / July 2009 —

‘The lane-ways become impassable with high rainfall, so the walkways were essential. We calve all year round to maximise returns from the milk contract, with Andrew and myself normally doing the feeding, with calves are housed in a purpose built shed’ Warrick said. Home grown feed is an important part of the herds diet. ‘The rye grass fodder we grow is so perfect, and that good, the cows go mad for it – I could almost eat it myself! ‘Any excess is baled up for silage and fed out for winter from May to early September – by a mixer wagon’ Warrick said. Son Andrew completed a diesel mechanic apprenticeship before returning to work fulltime on the family farm. ‘We emphasised to Andrew the importance of having a trade, and it has paid off as he works for local silage contractors, as a driver and mechanic during harvest time. It is also a great help to have Andrew’s expertise on-hand when doing our own silage and also maintaining our machinery’ Warrick said. The Mark’s family have used very little casual labour over the years, just enough to support some time off for family holidays and to attend field days once in a while. ‘I find that things run much smoother when managed from within the family’ Warrick said. Naomi is currently studying her final VCE year – in between breeding her own Jerseys and attending shows. ‘I have always loved Jerseys, and we are lucky to have a very active breeders club in our area – the (Beauta Zone) Jersey Cattle Club. It’s been going for 40 years now, and we have about 16 active members at present. I have received a lot of support from the club, and also been inspired by breeders such as Milton Johnson, Pat McDonald and the Wilson family in Tamworth’ Naomi said. Naomi has already had notable success in the ring, winning a First placing in the Junior Judging (U16) and Junior Parader (U16) at the North Coast Dairy Spectacular in September 2008, and going on to receive Third at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April this year, in the Dairy Cattle Junior Judging State Final (U25). Three of Naomi’s Starlight Jerseys have also performed well in the ring at the 2008 Dorrigo Show, winning Junior Champion Jersey Heifer with Ingalala Whiskies Memory, and Reserve Champion

Warrick also received Reserve Champion Cow, and Best Udder with Fairbrae Furor Dinah (VHC). ‘We are very proud of our cow, and in total the family bought home 3 championships – so it was a great show for us all’ Warrick said. Warrick does all of the AI for the entire herd and Starlight cows, but Naomi selects her own bulls. Bulls that are currently favoured by the Marks family are Sabre, Valerian, Guapo, Spirit, Astound, Resurrection and Glasgow. Showing cattle is a shared family passion, and the Marks’ have always supported the little local agricultural shows. ‘We make sure we go to our local shows each year – it helps to keep them going, and it is good publicity for the Jersey breed as well’ Warrick said. Naomi hopes to keep breeding and building up her stocks, and going to as many shows as possible. ‘I really love showing – everything about it. In fact, I’d rather show cows than go to school. The social aspect is fantastic too, at IDW I have met breeders from all over Australia, and I just enjoy seeing the best cows around – across all of the different breeds’ Naomi said. Another recent highlight for Naomi was attending the 2008 World Dairy Expo in the USA. ‘It was absolutely amazing, and I am encouraging Mum and Dad to go over in October this year to experience it’ Naomi said. Warrick said: ‘Kaylene and I would love to go over for the World Expo this year, so we will just see what happens there. As for the future, things have certainly changed around here – there are now just two other dairy farms in the immediate area, and when we started, there were 16. Like most coastal areas, primary producers are being priced out of the land market, with local real estate sales currently running at $15,000 per acre. Retired people from Brisbane and Sydney are coming here - looking for a peaceful lifestyle on a few acres, where they can build their dream home and have a few animals. These prices, plus huge input costs are preventing young farmers from getting started in the area, and as a result, the whole area is changing’. ‘While things are going well for us, we will just keep putting-along and enjoying life and showing our cows’ Warrick said.

By Office Manager Lorraine Keating Hi everyone Well, congratulations must go to the Northern Districts Jersey Breeders Club who organised the Jersey Australia AGM and ancillary events at Echuca/ Moama. The four days were fantastic! A great mix of information and entertainment – and I entered wholeheartedly into the entertainment side of things I can tell you. The NDJBC organisers had put me on the door at most events (such thoughtful people). Anyway that meant I really got to meet a lot of members and by the end was not doing a bad
job of linking names and faces (if I do say so myself). On the other hand I was not doing such a great job of ticking off those who had paid, so I do apologise to those whom I accosted while they were trying to eat their (paid-for) meals! Those of you who missed the event should start marking your diaries for next year when it will be held in NSW. It’s such a great opportunity to meet other members and discuss ideas.
