behindthescenes The AJBS website (www.jersey.com.au) is certainly the best communication tool this organisation has implemented, only bettered by this our very distinct Jersey Journal. Federal Council continues to support the electronic version of the Journal by offering it for free to anyone wishing to download it – and they do with over 750 copies sent to 32 countries around the world. AJBS Federal Council is also wishing to offer advertisers (registering members) the opportunity to have their Journal page advertisement blown up to poster size and hung ringside in the 2008 IDW Jersey booth for the small fee of $100 contact the office for further details on how to get involved. What is also special about the website is the openness of the Jersey Forum, all matter of issues are dealt with candidly in this open space and I encourage members to join the 200 (on average) daily visitors to the forum to view or take part in the current range of debates hosted online. “Look, I must confess I get to the office check the Bureau of Meteorology then go to the Jersey site to see what’s going on” , said a very prominent AB Company representative recently at a State meeting. This and plenty of other similar comments are made by many of the Dairy Industry representatives I meet during my working week, which is not only encouraging but a real coup for our members. You as an individual have a platform to float ideas, make suggestions and indeed vent your disapproval 24/7 and the Dairy Industry is watching. The website will undergo an upgrade over coming months to make it a little easier to negotiate pages as well as to streamline the current content. It is hoped show results, regional news etc. can be all added in the fresh new format.

Back to matters of the cow now and Federal Council advisers members using two in one tattoo applicators that they must apply the tattoo in the left ear to avoid the industry mandatory NLIS tag. Members are also advised that calf defect forms are available online or from the ofﬁce so please make use of them so AJBS can properly monitor any genetic problems early. Members selling bulls to AB Companies need to be aware that Jersey House will be chasing a ﬂat transfer fee of $35 +gst. AJBS reserves the right to deem sires ineligible for the national registrar if they are not properly registered and or transferred. To avoid having PT daughters ineligible for registration members are asked to adhere to this new fee promptly. AJBS FEDERAL COUNCIL MEETS IN GYMPIE QUEENSLAND During May, AJBS Federal Council conducted its annual general meeting and the traditional Ordinary Meeting in Gympie, Queensland hosted by AJBS Queensland Branch. Members will be pleased to know that Federal Council returned a modest profit for the previous trading year however, due to the increasing cost has moved slight increases to classification and Jersey Journal advertising rates (see new rates in this edition). In response to member feedback wanting to see Federal Council improve the current show ethics rules, members are now advised that Rule 10 now has a new point: ‘(6) The owner/lessee will be held responsible for any breach of the show ethic rules’. It is felt that by adding the responsibility on owners members will take an active role in seeing that they confirm to the AJBS rules when and if they employ professional fitters to prepare cattle for show.

Federal Council has agreed to fund the ringside booth for IDW 2008 and has agreed to prepare a new ‘Export Brochure’ in an effort to better promote Australian Jerseys abroad. The meeting took time to consider, discuss and vote on a new Jersey Australia constitution prepared and drafted by Grey, Friend and Long Solicitors. All states contributed actively in a thorough review of the document. Changes to the document have been distributed amongst State Branches and are likely to be ratiﬁed for implementation at a special meeting scheduled for early September 2007. Assuming all states sign off on the document the roll out of Jersey Australia could begin as early as March 2007. AJBS Victorian Branch invited AJBS Federal Council to hold its 2008 AGM in Colac, Victoria and all delegates look forward to that region’s hospitality in the coming year. On behalf of AJBS Federal Council I would like to thank members of the AJBS Queensland Branch for their hospitality during the May meetings. The Gympie Show all breeds dinner was a wonderful success and congratulations to organizers and all exhibitors for the wonderful display of cattle at the event.

Northern Lights Shine The Jersey Australia Annual General Meeting was but a small part of a wonderfully run three day Jersey event. Hats off to event organizers and hosts, the Northern District Jersey Breeders Club who, despite one of the toughest years on record, ran an inspiring event that kicked off with the Northern Lights Sale that astounded the dooms dayers with a wonderful average above $2000 (see Elders Sale report). “Admittedly we only had the sale date penciled in back in January, with no water, no rain on the horizon and soaring feed costs the idea of hosting a sale in our stricken region didn’t make much sense”, Bill Cochrane NDJBC President said candidly prior to the hammer falling on the ﬁrst lot. “The Club really came together with everyone taking on all the many responsibilities and it’s the entire group that needs a big pat on the back,” Bill added. The Club posted its own website to promote the three day event and sale which was very professional and the ﬁrst of its type for this event. Auctioneer Brian

Leslie praised the group for its professionalism and the packed sale venue showed that all the effort was worth it. Following the post sale dinner & dance (many piked the second part) was wonderfully catered for that had Jersey enthusiasts packed to the rafters enjoying the great meal, live band as well as lots of Jersey camaraderie. Herd visits were informative, all herds crammed with quality cows that were in wonderful order despite the big dry. Guest speakers Jeff Zeigler Select Sires and Tara Bohn Alta Genetics were interesting and sent the big groups away with very pro Jersey messages. On the final day the 2007 Jersey Australia Annual General Meeting was held in Echuca where a good quorum of members turned out from all corners of Victoria, Southern Riverina and even a couple of families from Tasmania. Members were pleased that the organisation had traded profitably and enjoyed each of the committee member’s reports. With the official proceedings out of the way, two surprise presentations took place with Jersey Australia chairman Trevor Saunders presenting an ELITE SIRE BREEDER AWARD to GC & RG Sprunt - Kaarmona Jerseys for breeding KAARMONA VALERIAN No.1 APR Sire Feb/May 2007. Then after a small scufﬂe the quorum appreciated seeing a very modest Mr Hann smile for cameras and proudly displaying his Distinguished Service badge on his jumper. The ﬁnal presentations were the Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze 2006 Production Awards being presented to members present at the meeting. Mr Saunders took time to read out the amazing production achieved

by AJBS Members and encouraged all members to participate in the national award in the coming season. Mr Saunders also closed the meeting with plenty of praise for the Northern District Cattle Club for their inspirational event, outstanding planning that “even included rain during herd visits, that plus the talk of higher milk prices who could ask for more”, he said.

Update on MANHATTEN Calf Irregularities A small proportion of MANHATTEN offspring display an abnormal condition. The occurrence of this condition seems quite random in that most farmers have reported no problems while others may have up to about 4% of calves affected. The picture we have built up of the typically-affected offspring is as follows: • gestation period 7-14 days longer than expected (overall Manhatten is a “short-gestation” bull but the affected progeny are often longer) • calf often takes several days to stand and when it does is wobbly on its feet and may tremble • the condition may not be obvious in the young calf but by 4-6 months some affected calves begin to show trembling and abnormal gait especially in the hind legs – often this resembles ryegrass staggers. In our experience from monitoring some affected animals the condition does not improve. Because Manhatten is such a good bull genetically, we are

aware of farmers giving an affected offspring special care in the hope it improves to normal. We recommend farmers seek advice from their vet if an animal is observed with symptoms similar to those described above. Over the last 18 months AMBREED NZ has worked with Massey University, AEU and LIC to try to get to the bottom of the problem. To date no consistent anatomical abnormality has been identiﬁed. Database analyses show that the mortality rate for Manhatten calves is not different to that for other Jersey bulls but he has a slightly higher proportion of “longgestation” offspring compared to other bulls. Collaboration with Massey is continuing and updates of progress are reported on the AmBreed (www.ambreed.co.nz) website. Because the condition occurs in crossbred as well as purebred progeny, we are certain the condition is not a genetic recessive in the Jersey breed. It is possible, but unlikely, that the condition may be controlled by a

single gene with a complicated mode of expression. However, AmBreed believes that it is most likely that Manhatten genetics are susceptible to an environmental influence which affects offspring during foetal development. Thus the calf is damaged in-utero. If this theory is correct there are many environmental influences which could be implicated including factors like BVD or copper deficiency. It will be extremely difficult to isolate which one Manhatten is sensitive to. As would be expected from his genetic proof and the opinion farmers have of his progeny, Manhatten continues to be a very popular bull: BOS Trading is proud to continue to promote him as a herd improver. Indeed we have many farmers who continue to use him despite having had a small proportion of affected progeny in some crops in the past – “he is too good not to use for the sake of the odd possible problem calf” is the sort of comment we often get.

NORTHERN LIGHTS AGM 2007 SALE Presented by Northern District Jersey Breeders Club Members of the Northern District Jersey Club are to be congratulated on the excellent presentation of their Northern Lights Sale that incorporated the Annual General Meeting of Jersey Australia. Presentation Perfection! Pre sale presentation of cattle offered via their very own website, the cattle and indeed the facilities of the host farm, Jugiong of the Nicholson families at Girgarre were all nothing short of excellent. The pre sale efforts of the NDJBC guaranteed a very large crowd who came, bid or at least witnessed a wonderful multi-vendor sale on Wednesday 30th May 2007. “A wonderful line-up of cattle” was heard to be said by many of the prospective buyers and onlookers. The milking cattle presented well in the selling barn with many stating that you wouldn’t see much better at a Show. Top Price of $6000 was paid for Bushlea Megastar Maybell, a March 06 heifer who has 7 cows behind her that have an average lifetime production of 9.5 lactations and whose dam was the IDW Champion of 2004 & 2007. She was purchased by Brentwood Farms, California USA and P & L Mumford, Won Wron Victoria. Next top price of $5100 was paid by Brookbora Jerseys, Tennyson who purchased Lot 27- Kaarmona

Auctioneer Brian Leslie drops the hammer on Glenfern Lemvig Canary during the Northern Lights Sale, the proceeds of this heifer were donated by Peter & Bev Farrell to Jersey Australia Research Fund. Jace Marie 2, who had 2 gen of SUP92 points backing her. This heifer was very smart, correct and looked good underneath, even at this early stage. The same buyer selected another very classy Jace daughter offered by T & J Campbell, Jimann Jace Roxanna due to calve in Spring. Third top priced lot was the much admired, very milky cow Jugiong Daisymae 4652 $3700. This Astound daughter was purchased by B Cochrane, Bamawm. Many keen breeders remarked on the quality of the freshly calved Annvale Jaces Belle, this great granddaughter of Duncan Belle sold a/c Dawn Anderson to C & P MacKenzie of Corriemungle for $3300. Jugiong Daydream 4910, a milking 2nd lactation cow by Avery, sold to Doug Phillips of Irrewillipie at $3200, Loxleigh Power Mans 8, a Flowerpower bred to AltaWhisky a/c Akers Family at $3000, selling to J& K Sykes of Ringarooma Tasmania.

2ND STAGE COMPLETE DISPERSAL SALE A very large crowd witnessed a wonderful sale of the Rolma Jersey Stud of Robert & Thelma Reid at Gundowring on Thursday 12th July 2007. This year’s catalogue boasted the complete line of two year old heifers that sold freshly calved or close up and due through the Spring, from the wonderfully bred cows of the Rolma herd. Top Price of $4700 was paid for Rolma Astound G Noella, a March 05 heifer who has 4 generations VHC cows behind her. Her dam has 7 lactations ave PI 119 – Top PI of 130. She was purchased by Robert Brown, Koroit via phone bidding. Robert also purchased, Lot 5 Rolma Astound G Noella 174 also a March 05 heifer who was the Junior Champion Tallangatta 2007, for $3400. Second top price of $4200 was paid by JR & MA Cockerell of Warrain Jerseys, Numurkah who purchased Lot 6- Rolma Astound G Noella 177. The top three priced heifers were all sired by Molly Brook Beretta Fabulous from the Golden Noella family. NOT JUST FREE REGISTRATIONS: By Peter Farrell Jersey Australia - Breed Development Chairman. Progeny test has long been discussed as a problem for the Jersey breed and as the dairy industry shrinks, so does the amount of progeny testing amongst the Jersey breed. While in the recent past the AB industry had relied on commercial Jersey herds and the mating of Holstein/Friesen heifers to secure enough daughters for young bulls to receive a reliable proof, the registered sector has failed to fully embrace progeny testing here in Australia. To encourage more progeny testing amongst the registered sector Jersey Australia has established the 20/60 PT programme which began with ABS Australia and Semex Australia during 2006. The program has been very successful and many AJBS members have been pleased to be contacted by Jersey House staff regarding registration rebates. The 20/60 PT Program is set to grow with Alta Genetics, Agrigene and World Wide Sires joining the program for mating season 2007.

“We have a world class Jersey team and currently enjoy plenty of overseas interest in our Australian proven Jerseys. The key to maximising this opportunity is to get reliable proofs for our graduating young sires,” says Daryl Brown Alta Genetics. Registered herds are encouraged to participate in the program by continuing to Herd Test while using 20% PT semen in their herds. It is estimated that if only 20% PT semen was used in the registered sector herds this would effectively give enough daughters and data for reliable proofs on 60 young Jersey sires a year. “Working with the Jersey breeders as opposed to relying on the commercial sector provides us with the beneﬁt of being able to correctly identify daughters of our young bulls much earlier so that all type and production data makes it into the bull’s ﬁrst proof,” says Jim Conroy Semex Australia. The quality of information sent through to ADHIS prior to young bulls receiving proofs is the driving force behind the 20/60 PT program with participating companies rebating the cost of registration

(up to 3 months of age). Members are encouraged to submit all rebated 2 year olds for classification so that all type data can be sent to ADHIS increasing the reliability of type proofs for all users here and the growing overseas market for Australian Jersey genetics. The 20/60 PT program sees many benefits to our members; increase in the genetic base of their herd and in turn the Jersey breed overall along with more reliable and a noticeable increase in the numbers of proven sires coming through the system to name a few. It is now time for the registered Jersey herds as a whole to take a stand and progeny test more young sires, we need to strive for total member and industry support so as to guarantee the continued growth of the breed here in Australia. Riverview Ridge Jerseys The Chilcott Family by Linda Houghton For ten years, Nathan and Amanda Chilcott were in a family dairyfarming enterprise, milking a mixed herd of Holsteins and Jerseys. ‘To the surprise of my ‘Holstein admiring’ brother’s annoyance, I really started to like and prefer the Jerseys, for their ease of management and temperament. I found them to be much less moody in the shed’ Nathan said. When the opportunity arose four years ago, Nathan and Amanda purchased the property across the road from the original family farm, and the Riverview Ridge Jersey Stud was born. Riverview is located in Montana, just out of Deloraine in central Tasmania – which is between Devenport and Launceston. The property is 608 acres of workable land, consisting of river ﬂats running to picturesque hills. Irrigation is via the Meander river system, backed up with bore water, and a 150 ML dam. Last year 400 ML were utilised on the dairy-farm. The Meander system is currently being upgraded, with the new scheme capable of delivering a surety of 98% on water allocations. Riverview holds 300 ML within the scheme, which should deliver water for the ﬁrst time in next years season. ‘We certainly felt the impact of the drought, with last years irrigation season running from October to March, which was a very long season. Normally, we only irrigate from December to February, so there is no doubt that we were affected by the dry conditions too’ Nathan said. ‘However, going to IDW this year and seeing the

conditions in Victoria and talking to the local farmers really drove home the fact that they were doing it tough in conditions a lot worse than ours, and I really felt for them farming in such difﬁcult conditions’ Nathan added. The Chilcotts took the original mixed milking herd with them to the new property, and began their long-term aspiration of building up to a 500 head, fully registered Jersey Stud herd. Meanwhile the Chilcott family was expanding too, and today there are four children Kye (5), Colby (3), Jaylen (2) and 8-month-old Jett. ‘It is more than enough work to be developing a new farm and building up a good herd, but to also raise a young family as well certainly makes for a busy life, but we know we’ll get there’ Nathan said. With Nathan now the newly elected Vice President of AJBS Tasmanian Branch, things are only going to become a little busier. ‘I enjoy meeting with and talking to other breeders, so it seemed like a natural progression to get involved on committee. Working alongside other keen breeders to contribute to the breed’s enhancement and future is really enjoyable’ Nathan said. Herd numbers were increased by purchasing 80 cows over the ﬁrst 18 months, with cows sourced

from Geoff & Anne Heazelwood’s Merseybank Stud at Latrobe, and also from Babinda Stud from the Western Creeks area. Today the herd consists of 380 cows, with the aim to build up to a herd of 500 registered Jerseys. The Chilcotts employ a fulltime worker, and have a couple of relief milkers as well, propped up by Nathan’s parents helping out from time to time if they are needed. Nathan attended a nutrition course with Dan Huggins from Maxi-Cow, a Victorian based company. Consultations are ongoing on a needs basis to get the cows in peak condition and keep them there, despite any difﬁcult conditions. ‘Production is up 5% this year, and I am currently feeding the herd a grain mixture of wheat, canola and lupins at the rate of 4–5kg per cow, per day in the dairy’ Nathan said. Calving is split over the two seasons each year, but with the majority of the herd calving down in the Spring. ‘This year is the ﬁrst Winter we have milked right through, and while the hoses haven’t frozen up yet, it can get pretty cold here, down to -8°c in fact. Last year I was drying the cows off so that I could go on the Alta USA Tour, and the whole dairy froze, which was pretty interesting!’ Nathan said. ‘The Alta USA Tour was fantastic; I would recommend it to all Jersey

breeders. Actually getting to see cow families such as Futurity daughters, and bulls like Belles Nix were highlights. Also, learning about the animal management methods used by the US farmers was very interesting, and especially the differences from one state to another. For example, the huge Californian operations such as Hilmar with 1300 cow herds, feedlot operations and keeping animals in barns, to farms in Oregon, which were much smaller operations and herds are kept outdoors. The Oregon land type and weather was very similar to Tasmanian conditions, which would probably explain why I would use similar bulls to the Oregon operators. Cows living outdoors need to be strong and robust to cope with weather extremes, and to continually walk long distances between the dairy and paddocks - a very different type of animal to those that live in barns, who are literally ‘milk machines’ where physical strength is of lesser importance’ Nathan said.

Merseybank True Blessing won the 3YO, and Merseybank True Testament won the 4YO award, and although our cows didn’t fare too well in the finals, I learnt a lot and really enjoyed it’ Nathan said. Riverview Ridge Jerseys are also starting to grace the show-ring, with Nathan taking 4 cows to the Pura State Dairy Fair in Deloraine, which is a big all-breeds show in Tasmania. ‘I took along a fitter to help me out, because I had no idea of what was involved, and our cows did really well. We got 1st Junior 2YO with Merseybank Petite

‘During the tour, I teamed up with Pat Nicholson of Jugiong Jersey Stud in Northern Victoria. We hit the trail of the pubs along the way, and we made the most of our time over there. I especially loved Nashville, the people are so friendly and the Grand Ole Oprey show was spectacular, a real once in a lifetime experience. Of course, on the next trip Amanda has told me she will be coming along too, so it will be even better!’ Nathan said. We also got 5th in 5YO In-Milk with Merseybank True Testament’ Nathan said. ‘Jerseys took out the majority of In-Milk Classes at this high proﬁle fair, and I don’t think that went down too well with the Holstein boys’ Nathan added. ‘While I think there is merit in the traditional show-ring as a unique experience, I also like and recommend the Great Southern Challenge format, because it gives everyone a go, without having to put the cows on a ‘pedestal’ and enduring the transport costs, sleepless nights and the endless hours of work to present the cows for the show-ring. It is a great choice for the commercial herd owners to ‘strut their stuff’ without all of the stress and expense of the show-ring. I’ll continue to do both, and will give a few local shows a

go now’ Nathan said. Nathan does all of the AI breeding himself, and enjoys selecting the bulls for particular cows, while keeping an eye on the direction of future herd development by using the computer package GA Gene Screen, as an aid to making an informed decision on bulls. ‘There are certain cows that I know straight away who I want to mate them to, and I really look forward to seeing the resulting calves, it is always exciting’ Nathan said. Bulls currently being used at Riverview Ridge include: Flowerpower, Futurity, Megastar,

Alta Whiskey, Brookbi, Avery Max, Rocket, Alta Nix, Signature and a new Canadian bull called Comerica. Another favourable observation of the Jersey breed that Nathan has made is the ease of calving. ‘I calved 320 last year, and I only had to help out 6 of them, whereas my brother (who milks Holsteins) is out of bed at night a lot more than that with calving problems’ Nathan said. Favourite in the Riverview Ridge herd at the moment is the standout Merseybank family, with Testament in particular proving to

be a great cow. ‘I enjoy what I do, and retain a positive outlook for the industry – especially with such good opening prices, but I hope that we can get more young people into it. In Tasmania though, we are losing a lot of good productive farming land to tree plantations, which is going to make it a lot harder for young farmers to get a start. Hopefully my children might want to follow on from me, but we will just have to wait and see what unfolds’ Nathan said.

MANHATTEN & IMPULS lead the way for BOS AMBREED NZ sire MANHATTEN continues to reign supreme in the Jersey world. His production ﬁgures show a nice balance of milk with positive components. Many customers continue to look for improved stature and strength and that’s what you will get. IMPULS daughters show an ideal rump set and good feet and legs. Despite the high production the udders are very shallow and show high rear attachments. Fore attachment and teat placement need to be protected. As is the norm with many Danish bulls, IMPULS shows positive ratings for Cell Count, Fertility and Productive Life. Last but not least he offers a total outcross option to all US and NZ bloodlines (no American, 6% NZ, 25% Canadian and 69%

VALERIAN NOW the world’s BEST

VALERIAN has become the first Australian bull to top Interbull rankings. Interbull compares all Jersey bulls available worldwide and then ranks them on their most likely performance for Australian farmers. This achievement confirms the ability of Australian breeders, combined with Genetics Australia’s progeny testing system, to produce the breed’s very best. VALERIAN (Kaarmona Valerian) was sired by JEPERIMETER and his dam is Ecallaw Admiral Violet. Admiral Violet produced over 6,400 litres as a two year old and was the top PI heifer in the ‘Kaarmona’ herd owned by Rohan and Graeme Sprunt of Kaarimba, in northern Victoria. VALERIAN has been widely acknowledged as the most exciting Jersey sire to graduate in recent years. Not only is he rated as the highest profit sire within the breed, VALERIAN offers the complete package, a feat that is rarely achieved. High production is confirmed by an ASI of 131, good milk flow over 800 litres and he is the breed leader for protein at +36 kgs, combined with a positive .19%, from the May 2007 ABV’s. Changing of the Guard at Jersey Australia: At the conclusion of the AJBS Victorian Branch (Jersey Australia) Annual General Meeting in May, one ﬁnal task for the committee – elect a new President. After years of service, outgoing President Mr Trevor Saunders thanked his committee for their support and congratulated them on the many achievements during his term. Noel Furze of Nowell Jerseys, Huon North East Victoria was elected un-opposed into the chair and is quite possibly the youngest President the Victorian Branch history. Well known to AJBS members as the breeder of TAILBOARD a recent No.1 APR bull, Mr Furze was excited by the challenge that lay ahead and has been extremely busy

93 for milking speed, 94 for temperament and he is ranked 94% on farmer likeability. Management traits are also a feature for VALERIAN. Although the data has relative low reliability, he appears sound for all management traits including cell count, daughter fertility and survival. VALERIAN’s sire, JEPERIMETER, continues to perform well in Australia, and is now ranked eighth on the ABV’s, at 108 for Proﬁt (APR). Perimeter’s proof is based on 2293 daughters milking in Australian herds. Perimeter was bred to be great, as he is sired by Mason Farm’s Boomer Sooner Berretta and is out of one of the breed’s truly great cows “Duncan Belle 95 Ex”. VALERIAN’s dam, Ecallaw Admiral Violet HC+ 88 has continued to produce well, having a four lactation average of 119 PI and she is consistently in the top three milk producers at Kaarmona Jerseys. Admiral Violet was sired by Judds Admiral, which, in turn, was sired by J. S. Quicksilver Royal and has proven to be one of the great sires of the breed. Judds Admiral was born in 1988 and is still ranked fourth in Australia at 116 for Proﬁt. Admiral sired some good sons but it is as a maternal grand sire that he is having outstanding success with TAILBOARD, NZLLAD, MEDIATOR, NZLHEARTS and ACEJASPER, to name a few. VALERIANS grand dam is Bindi Berretta Violet HC+ 88 who holds the milk

She is one of three outstanding ET full sisters that scored to VHC 91 and had a top average PI of 130 in three different herds. Berretta Violet is also a full sister to ZEPELIN and GUNSHOT which were progeny tested in the 1996 team. VALERIAN’s great grand dam is Sunny Day Sky Line Violet. from ‘pot luck’ to progress Bruce & Kylie Hill

by Linda Houghton After a long career in the security industry that included working at the Sydney Olympics, Bruce Hill began an interesting journey to a new career and way of life. Born and bred into a Holstein-loving family, with a preference for the black and white cow, Bruce and Kylie began working as relief milkers for David and Sue Thorn’s Jersey Stud in Victoria. ‘When I left Sue and David’s to take up a fulltime job managing a dairyfarm in Mooroopna, they gave us 9 Jersey poddy calves for luck, and things just started from there. To this day, we still have 8 of those original 9’ Bruce said. Following the management position, Bruce and Kylie went on to become share-farmers, gaining another years experience in the industry before taking up their current position at Carpendeit, which is 14km from Cobden in the Victorian Western District. ‘We always wanted dirt underneath our feet, and this place became available to share-farm, it just felt right, and now we are in our fourth year on this property’ Bruce said. Thalia Jerseys consists of 540 acres, with 460 acres being workable dryland farming, and the remainder being native bush. The property owner is retired, and lives off-farm in the Geelong area. ‘We started up with those 9 Jersey calves, and now we have a milking herd of 300 Jersey cows, and 72 yearlings, 43 autumn calves’ Bruce said.

In the early days to boost the herd numbers, Bruce and Kylie regularly attended dispersal sales and always attempted to buy the best cows that they could afford. ‘We bought 19 of Chris Carroll’s herd at Invergordon as a good breeding platform to start things off, and also bought some cows from the Shepparton and Echuca chopper pens. At the time, we were lucky that people were off-loading their herds, and we picked up some good in-calf Jerseys for $200 to start us up’ Bruce said. ‘Kylie and I both believe that quitters never achieve anything, and we are in this to succeed despite the hard times we’ve been through. This year is looking good with improved milk prices, more normal autumn/winter rainfalls and the incentive is there to do it. The unprecedented payment levels have lifted the spirits a bit’ Bruce added. Both Bruce and Kylie work fulltime on the farm, and have one fulltime employee to help out. Like most dairy operators, finding the right person for the job was difficult, with the Hills trying out seven workers before they finally found someone who was competent, and could work safely. ‘Andrew stood out from the others because he seemed to really enjoy working with the cows, despite being a city bloke and a Kiwi!’ Bruce said. Days off and relief milking is juggled between them, and so far it is working OK. A milestone for the Hills was completing the genetic recovery

of a line of 17 Augustus daughters – which was the largest line of daughters from that bull in existence at the time. They were originally bought from Bob & Wilma McNabb, of the Maxon Stud. ‘The genetic recovery took a fair bit of paperwork and caused a few worries, but it was very satisfying – I can follow my cow families now, which is great’ Bruce said. An Augustus daughter is now a top producing 6YO in the herd. For sheer personality though, the Hills’ favourite is the pet of the herd, ‘Sydney’, who is the first cow in the dairy every morning, and loves a pat and cuddle. Bruce and Kylie are big fans of the 20/60 Progeny Test Programme (PT). ‘We select bulls each year, and this year AJBS was able to secure something worthwhile; a rebate for registering daughters of the PT bulls. It sweetens the load for breeders. It is an offer that all Jersey breeders can work towards, taking a punt on a PT bull at a very minimal cost. While you still have the rearing costs of the calf, the advantages to the breeder are substantial’ Bruce said. ‘Plus, I believe the benefits from the PT Programme can be seen to go even further – if a breeder decides to use all PT sires on a fully registered herd, they potentially wouldn’t have to pay any registration fees. Even on a small scale, it offers cost benefits, and once the calves are registered and the rebate paid, the AB companies have accurate data on how many daughters

are around, and where they are located. Even if the daughters are on-sold, they can still be tracked via the registration/change of ownership process. All of this just has to be good for the breed’ Bruce added. ‘It seems to me that some elements in the AB industry have got the idea that ‘numbers can milk cows’, in developing the APR system, of which I have been somewhat disillusioned with the results. I milk cows, not numbers, and I believe that prooﬁng is a huge issue. I progeny tested one particular sire, getting 7 heifers from him, 6 of which I tried to milk and failed because they were obviously quite mad – I literally couldn’t get near their udders. After writing to the AB company involved, I was informed that they would only focus on the performance of 1 of the 7 heifers - the only one that met the minimum 120 milking days requirement. This means that the problems with the other 6 – the vast majority, were not recorded or analysed’ Bruce said. ‘In my opinion, the existing APR does not consider ‘Type’ to be a vital element, but it is crucial to breeding a top producing cow. Secondly, ‘Negative Milk Flow’ is a major step in the wrong direction! I believe there are just 3 sires worth using in the current Top 20 APR; an opinion based on our personally developed selection criteria for bulls. This is what we look for when selecting sires for our herd: • Proven Cow Families ie. 3 or more VHC generations behind

Therefore, we would be very reluctant to use any sires which score ‘under the mark’ in any of those criteria categories. The APR system is a load of crap, and it just doesn’t work. I am sure that there are a lot of other breeders out there who are very disillusioned with this system too, but they just don’t want to speak out or tread on any toes. Well, I don’t mind treading on a few toes, and am comfortable in speaking my mind’ Bruce said. ‘I believe the biggest challenge to the breed will be to change the selection index, and I have heard that it may take five years to move to a more effective system. This delay could be disastrous for the future of Jersey breeding stock, and will make for an extremely difficult recovery’ Bruce said. ‘However, instead of being fully reliant on any selection system without question, Kylie and I have always received a lot of good advice from well established breeders who have been milking Jerseys for many years, from within the Colac and Northern District Clubs. We have been the most junior members in these clubs, and we have found the assistance and feedback of club members to be absolutely fantastic. Brendan Nicholson and John & Margaret Cockerell from the Northern District especially, have always taken the time to come out and look at our cows and helped us to select suitable bulls. The Cockerells’ have also helped to keep us going when things were tough and we were finding our feet in the industry, which is something we will always be very grateful for’ Bruce said.

Hills have begun to dip their toes in putting their cows ‘out there’ to see how they measure up, with 3 Thalia Jerseys entered into the Colac District On Farm Challenge. ‘We have picked up three 2nd placings in the past two years, which is a huge encouragement to keep going. I’ve tried the showring too, but no blue ribbons as yet, but scored a couple of red ones from the Colac and Camperdown shows so far’ Bruce said. IDW is the annual holiday for the Hills, and they love to catch up with the other breeders to chat and see some wonderful cows. ‘We would love to take some of those cows home with us, and we hope that some day we will be breeding cows like those. But for the moment, we just focus on what we can afford to do, and also what we cannot afford not to do – making the most effective decisions that we can’ Bruce said. Bruce believes the future for the industry is bright, with the demand for milk at an all time high. ‘The only thing that I see as a threat to the industry is bad politics and policies. Rural communities and primary production enterprises support the capital cities, yet they continually struggle to receive the recognition, respect and support that they deserve as key players in economic growth’ Bruce said. ‘As for us, Kylie and I will continue to improve on our herds breeding and work towards buying our own property. We are prepared to work hard and to be happy growing old together, enjoying working and living on our own farm’ Bruce said.

TRANSFER FEES FOR LIVE ANIMALS + EMBRYO SALES Within 60 days of sale: $5.50 plus 1.1% SALE PRICE. It is the sellers responsibility to advise office and pay transfer fees. Intra-family transfers free. If the sale is conducted through Jersey Marketing Service there are no transfer fees applicable. ET transfer fee is applied to total embryo’s sold - form available from Jersey House. TELEPHONE REGISTRATIONS Registrations can be completed via telephone, and credit card facilities may be used for payment. Emergency Registration Processing Fee (processed within 3 working days via telephone) will be charged to credit card at $55 per animal. REPLACEMENT PEDIGREE CERTIFICATES If certificates are requested for a whole herd then cost is $1.10 per certificate. If the request is for individual animals then the cost is $2.20 per certificate.
