2011 - What a year for Jersey Opera House! A new performance studio, upper bar, administration offices and a revamped, rebranded cafébar; all in less than a year’s work for Jersey Opera House. It’s been a busy and productive 2011 for the theatre. Funding was approved by the States of Jersey’s Fiscal Stimulus Fund early in the year and our refurbishment programme began in April. We kept the theatre open for business and disruption was kept to a minimum despite the extensive building works. The project was completed in just 28 weeks, on time and on budget, and we are thrilled with the results!
in March will certainly be a highlight with two separate productions of Giselle and Romeo & Juliet. We have also got loads of laughs lined up with comedians Omid Djalili in January and Jon Richardson and Count Arthur Strong in March, plus Guilty Pleasures in May. We are particularly proud to be bringing over our first piece of theatre for a few years; Our Country’s Good is on in February and shouldn’t be missed!
The rebranded OH! Cafébar is certainly buzzing since it opened. The kitchen is now four times the size, which is reflected in our extended daytime and evening menus, not to mention our in-house catering services. The pièce de résistance for us is the new performance studio and events space. It’s been a vision for a longtime to have such a facility and the possibilities are endless for us now in terms of hiring the space to touring shows, local companies and groups, as well as using it for in-house performances, workshops and the new Children’s Drama School, which we are launching in early 2012. (See back page for more details).
The lineup of Metropolitan Opera screenings is even more impressive this season, kick starting in January with Plácido Domingo as Neptune in The Enchanted Island. Then don’t forget the National Theatre Live screenings – one to watch out for is Lenny Henry in The Comedy of Errors in March.
We’ve got a jam-packed season ahead with top notch shows scheduled every month until May. The Moscow City Ballet

Eminent conductor William Christie leads an all-star cast with David Daniels (Prospero) and Joyce DiDonato (Sycorax) as the formidable foes, Plácido Domingo as Neptune, Danielle de Niese as Ariel, and Luca Pisaroni as Caliban. the lion in winter by James Goldman Amateur Production
JACK HIGGINS PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS (IN AID OF JERSEY HOSPICE) THE LION IN WINTER BY JAMES GOLDMAN Sibling rivalry, sexual politics and highoctane power games - just a typical family Christmas! Well it is for the Plantagenet’s in 1183. When Henry ll invites his estranged wife, Queen Eleanor, plus his three sons, his mistress and the King of France to join him for the festive season, his castle turns into a war zone as the combatants battle with words and deeds over who should succeed Henry as King of England. James Goldman’s great historical drama has echoes of King Lear with Noel Coward penning some of the dialogue! At once a very modern yet period piece with razor sharp quips, veiled emotions and Machiavellian intrigue. Immortalised in the Oscar-winning film with Katherine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole, Jack Higgins Productions now brings Goldman’s original masterpiece to the Jersey stage. travelling light A new play by Nicholas Wright national theatre live Screening
How had a 22 year old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come? In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.

OUR COUNTRY’S GOOD Produced by The Original Theatre Company Australia. 1788. A British ship arrives with a cargo of soldiers and convicts transported abroad for their country’s good. National Dance Company Wales makes a welcome return to Jersey Opera House with a ravishing and entrancing triple bill of international work. This programme pushes the Company’s 12 dancers to the limit revealing both their supreme talent and individuality. World-famous choreographer Ohad Naharin contrasts a hypnotic female duet set to Ravel’s famous music in B/olero with a ceremonial dance encapsulating the physicality of the five male dancers in Black Milk. Itzik Galili, renowned for creating passionate and dynamic choreography, returns with another new commission after delighting audiences with Romance Inverse in spring 2010 while Phantoms Of Us is a powerful new work from Eleesha Drennan, accompanied by evocative visuals from artist Sue Williams. Artists and photographers are invited to sketch or photograph the dancers in a special Open Class on Thursday 1st March. Student and Public Workshops are also available on Wednesday 29th February. the comedy of errors by William Shakespeare nT live ENCORE Screening A contemporary staging of Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy, with renowned British comedian Lenny Henry playing Antipholus of Syracuse. Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. A buzzing metropolis, to the outsiders it appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound. Consistently recognised by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset.

count arthur strong evokes huge belly-laughs throughout “hisHesuperb 90 minute set-piece. ” Jersey Opera House has played host to countless comedians down the years, but perhaps none quite so bizarre, leftfield, outrageous or contagiously funny as Count Arthur Strong. Impossible to pigeon-hole, Count Arthur Strong has earned cult status first on Radio 2, then at the Edinburgh Fringe and latterly via his Sony Award winning series on Radio 4. If you didn’t know already, Count Arthur Strong is a fading music hall artist who is now reduced to appearing, for example, on his own Doncaster Cable TV cookery programme, though he believes he is a big star, and continually reminisces about his past and show-business pals. He is a walking, shouting, shambolic wreck of a man; an old curmudgeon with few saving graces and even fewer social skills. He evokes huge belly-laughs throughout his superb 90 minute set-piece. Enjoy it for what it is – a comic master-class that only comes round once in a while. www.komedia.co.uk

she stoops to conquer by Oliver Goldsmith encore Screening
One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family. “To come to my house, to call for what he likes, to turn me out of my own chair, to insult the family, to order his servants to get drunk, and then to tell me, “This house is mine, sir”. By all that’s impudent it makes me laugh.” Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage.
However, thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he is mistaken for an innkeeper by his prospective son-in-law, Marlow, who also assumes his daughter is the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality, he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues.
