Project objectives: 1.

To demonstrate comprehension and satisfactory mastery of Google sketch-up.

2.

To understand the use and knowledge of different view types in sketch-up to achieve the desired image.

3.

To display an understanding of how buildings are built in the real.

BUSBY, PERKINS AND WILL

Lessons Learned: 1.

“Estimated Size” - Students were giving a basic knowledege of the site and build and told to draw the building in sketch-up using only their basic knowledge of the size of the windows and of the sturctural grid.

2.

“Sletch-up export” - The students were taught the most effective method for importing and exporting into and out of sketch-up.

3.

“Window and Structure” - The building was drawn with only a knowledge of the size of the windows and the size of the structural bays of the builiding the were also given plans and elevations that displayed that information.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The image from the LTL Tourbus hotel project that we reproduced started as a sketch-up model of the space where we had to estimate the size of the space and get the correct angle for the image. After the model we traced over it and exported that traced image into illustrator where we added the block colors such as the oor mate the walls and all of the windows. From illustrator we went to Photoshop where texture and entourage were added into the scene.

PROJECTS Joiners, David Hockney

SITE JOINER David Hockney is an artist who construct images called joiner. A joiner is an image that is a collection of photographs that are sort of in the neighborhood of a collage but they are all of the same place, and are meant to help show the passage of time.

methodology

The joiner helped me to see how the space could be considered interior and exterior. It helped to show me the portion of the building where it unfolded to show the inside to the outside world. The joiners ability to put the viewer into the eyes of the photographer allows them to be able to experience the passage of time in which the pictures were taken.

THE EIDETIC IMAGE The eidetic image is one that allows the viewer to experience how the producer fells about the site and the information that they want to explore. The different production methods that can be explored through eidetic images allows for a wildly diverse ďŹ eld of study. The ability to use digital and analog productions encourages the creators to explore everything they want to with the project. Ambiguity is a strong portion of the eidetic image it helps to allow the drawing to be interpreted many ways. However the clarity of the drawing helps to guide the conversations it produces in certain directions. The image I produce used both physical and digital production. The use of both allows the piece to interact in way that they help to explain one another. The space unfolded so does the box.

PROJECTS Jesse’s Construct

CONSTRUCT A construct is a 3D diagram that is somewhat structural but still allows for non-building ideas to be explored in its production and form.

methodology

The object can be constructed entirely by hand through casting, chiseling and general model making. It is a more complex form of standard 3D diagrams that has more emphasis on form and structure than pure ideas. The construsct looks like a lamp but it is exploring hidden objects. The construct does not need to look like what it is representing. The idea explored can be done by looking like itself or something different. My construct is made from simple materials, they are not the focus. The ideas being explored are those of hidden images. The cans on the interior are not vissible from the exterior aside from general shape. This leads to observers wondering what is inside and it builds an anticipation much like cranbrook.

COURSE CONCLUSIONS IThe visual communication two course taught me many things, form how to work with specific programs to produce different works, and images, to teaching me how to think about what I am producing in a way that allows me to produce different things. The conversations that this course had allowed me to participate in, the images it has lead me to produce, and the ideas it has let me explore have allowed me as a designer and as a student to better myself as an educated person. My approach to the different conversations I am able to have about the design world and the conversation I can have about the studio world can help me to better understand the different micro, macro, and Meta conversations about design that I can be engaged in. The different images I can produce come in two major types High res, and Low res. High res images are those of the important moments in a project they can range anywhere from a wall, to a door knob, to hallway. They are the places that people engage with the most meaningfully they are the front doors, and the front desks. They are the things that people remember when they leave the building. Low res images are things like long hallways or other places where they person engaging them is not meant to remember them, or they are supposed to be focusing on something else. Low res spaces are meant to be quick and not memorable they are not supposed to be the first thing design or thought about they are meant to be things that the designer does not put a lot of thought into. The different method of visual communication I can now use will help me to produce work that I can be proud of producing. They will let me produce better diagrams that can help to flesh out different ideas, and to make better thought out decisions. The projects and images that my new method would help me to produce will be better than my classmates. Methods such as working with analogy can let me use ambiguous images to better explain my project in ways that other students would not have thought of. Appropriation will allow me to better reference different projects that have already explored the ideas that I am exploring, and the use of these images will help me to show other people what ideas I am exploring. Indexical diagraming and production will help me to take site data and context and use it as

COURSE CONCLUSIONS something to help convey different ideas. With the different types of images that these different methods will allow me to use I can better explain my ideas with visual communication and will then be able better focus on the main ideas of my project. This class has allowed me to help further myself as a designer and as a potential architect. I am in the architectural engineering program I can still use what I have learned.
