A Letter from the Editors

W

elcome to Jessica Kingsley Publishers’ latest social work catalogue, which showcases our new and bestselling titles for social work and social care practitioners. Our last catalogue published in 2019; this catalogue covers all titles that have published since then, as well as some old favourites. Throughout the past two years, JKP has continued to commission and publish materials that we hope will support social work and social care practitioners with the important work that you do. We hope that you may discover new resources which you may have missed the first time around, as other priorities and pressures have weighed upon all of our personal and professional lives. It is difficult to pull out a handful of highlights from the catalogue; here are just a few: • Three new titles in the JKP/Research in Practice ‘Knowledge for Practice’ series on safeguarding and homelessness, domestic violence across the lifespan, and series editor Dez Holmes’s own edited volume on safeguarding young people. • ‘Spotlight on the author’ features for Dr. Karen Treisman and Sarah Naish – which provide an easy-to-navigate overview of the incredible range of resources they have created to support professionals and families. • Pioneering books on areas of emerging practice spanning mental health, gender, autism, adoption and fostering, and dementia – if you want more, we highly recommend signing up to our dedicated catalogues for each of these subject areas which will publish later in 2022.

Finally, we’d like to thank all of you who have used JKP’s books and resources – we hope that they have been helpful to you. If you have any feedback about our existing publications, or suggestions for publications you’d love to see us publish in future, please do get in touch! Therapeutic Parenting Essentials

Moving from Trauma to Trust Sarah Naish, Sarah Dillon and Jane Mitchell

Illustrated by Kath Grimshaw

An A-Z of the 70 most common challenges experienced by therapeutic parents – with strategies to help you survive! Surviving therapeutic parenting can almost be as easy as A,B,C with this popular A-Z style survival guide. Covering over 70 common issues and feelings, you can learn strategies to process your feelings and experiences as a therapeutic parent. Funny and warm, this survival guide is like a hug from another parent when you need it most. “People who are Patronizing Ignorant Experts don’t mean to be that way. I know because I was one. When I qualified as a social worker, I’d also worked for years as a nursery nurse. What I didn’t know about behaviour charts, wasn’t worth knowing, frankly. I’d spent an enjoyable couple of years patronizing lots of lovely foster parents and adopters, telling them how they were doing it all wrong. (They weren’t. I was talking out of my arse.) I didn’t mean to be patronizing and I didn’t mean to act like an expert, it’s just that it had been kind of implied that I was during my training. Luckily, my children taught me that I was in fact a complete idiot, who knew nothing whatsoever about how to respond to children with trauma. It was a bit of a shock to be honest, and I now unreservedly apologize to all the people I patronized and railroaded into stupid decisions in the past.” May 2022 | £16.99 | 352pp | tp | World rights available | ISBN-9781839971723

Learn from one family’s experiences of therapeutic parenting – the hard way! All families of children affected by trauma are on a journey, and this book will help to guide you and your family on your journey from trauma to trust. Sarah Naish shares her own experiences of adopting five siblings. She describes how to use therapeutic parenting – a deeply nurturing parenting style – to overcome common challenges when raising children who have experienced trauma. The book describes a series of difficult episodes for her family, exploring both parent’s and child’s experiences of the same events – with the child’s experience written by a former fostered child – and in doing so reveals the very good reasons why traumatized children behave as they do. The book explores the misunderstandings that grow between parents and their children, and provides comfort to the reader – you are not the only family going through this! Full of insights from a family and others who have really been there, this book gives you advice and strategies to help you and your family thrive. 2019 | £16.99 | 320pp | tp | World rights available | ISBN-9781787750326

With attention also to the fraught question of well-intentioned lying, this book offers a wealth of ways to improve conversations and relationships when someone is living with a dementia.

Pulling Through

The Hidden World of Modern Slavery Kate Garbers

Help for Families Navigating Life-Changing Illness Catherine Jessop

An exposé of modern slavery – an atrocity hidden in plain sight across the UK – featuring powerful stories of survivors, and explores what we need to be doing to help them. Modern slavery is far closer than we think. Yet it is largely unseen and unknown to most of us – a crime against humanity hidden in plain sight. In this revealing exposé, Kate Garbers shares moving stories of survivors she has met and shares insights she has gained through over a decade of anti-slavery work. Survivor stories are complemented by a forensic account of how modern slavery works and the many forms it can take – from forced labour to organ harvesting – and how it is enabled to continue by our current laws and systems. Unseen Lives also provides a vision of hope for those looking to challenge and dismantle modern slavery, laying out what changes we need to make as individuals and as a society in order to effectively tackle modern slavery and improve the support of survivors.

Down-to-earth memoir and survival guide charting a family’s journey through life-changing illness. On Christmas Day 2016, the Jessops were just an ordinary family, but on Boxing Day, one near-death experience swept them all into the bewildering world of hospitals and serious illness, and their lives changed forever. Pulling Through is a handbook of everything Catherine has learned on their journey. It covers many practicalities, such as explaining hospital tests and scans, jargon-busting medical terms, finance, rehabilitation and more. But it also illuminates the emotional aspect of illness and how massively it affects family and friends. There are chapters on the power of nature, music, counselling, optimism and humour, and how to look after the mental health of both patient and carer. This is a book of hope, help and reassurance on every aspect of coping with life-changing illness in the family: the good, the bad, the funny, the sad, and the useful. If you, or someone you know, has a life-changing illness, then this book is here to help.

“An inspiring, powerful memoir and a clear explanation of the development of modern slavery and the responses to it over the last twenty years. Written with humility and warmth, it demonstrates what an individual can do to really make a difference.” – Dame Sara Thornton, DBE, QPM, the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner 2021 | £14.99 | 288pp | tp | World rights available | ISBN-9781785926358

“Pulling Through is beautifully written, extremely moving, funny at times, and full of love. It brilliantly captures the fear and frustration of not knowing what is wrong and then the challenges of living with a new version of someone.” – Simon Hattenstone, Guardian journalist 2021 | £12.99 | 304pp | tp | World rights available | ISBN-9781787753723
