On July 4, 2017, Marina KIWIN’S volunteered at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at Lake Park in Huntington Beach alongside local KIWIN’S and Key Clubs.

The Kiwanis

Pancake Breakfast is an annual Fourth of July tradition in which the Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach hosts a pancake breakfast, especially for those running in the Surf City Run 5K.

We helped set up for this event by wiping

picnic tables, setting up serving tables, and preparing beverages.

During

the

event,

members

alternated

between cheering on the runners in the Surf City Run 5K, taking food from the outdoor kitchen to the serving area, and serving food.

After the breakfast ended, members

helped clean up by picking up trash, wiping down picnic tables, and putting the serving tables away.

CO R G I B EA CH DAY

ADE LA TR A N - LA QUIN TA HS What’s a better way to kick off the month than with service? Service and corgis! On the 1st of July, KIWINNERS woke up bright and early to meet up at the annual Corgi Beach Day’s brand new location in Long Beach. While the previous location had been in Huntington Beach, and therefore more convenient, the allure of dogs didn’t stop volunteers from signing up for this event. There, they helped unload supplies from trucks and set up canopies and tables for the various vendors at the event. Volunteers also assisted in arranging the arena, where contests would be held, and stacked up bottles of free samples that would be handed out to beach-goers. The once empty, peaceful horizon of the beach was now dotted with vibrant tents as food trucks rolled in, and within a couple hours, dogs filled the beach with their barks and waddles. Member Tina Nguyen describes, “I saw so many dogs, I thought it was heaven. We helped with the merchandise tent: handing shirts, mugs, stickers, and towels to the customers.” During down time, volunteers were able to watch the various competitions, such as best costume and best momo, or corgi butt. With clear skies and cool breezes, the ambiance provided a mood of relaxation in the midst of the festivities for volunteers, dogs, and spectators alike. KIWINNERS at the end of the day aided in the breakdown of booths and picked up trash as the event came to a close. Jessica Lien expresses, “The hard work was worth it, as I knew that I had contributed to maintaining a clean beach as well as arranging a lively and enjoyable event for both the public and the corgis to appreciate.”
