EDISON - DeAnn Le TNT FIREWORKS FLYER HANDOUT The day before illuminating fireworks light up the Fourth of July night sky and neighborhood streets, Edison KIWIN’S volunteered at a local TNT firework stand to help spread 4th of July spirit. At this event, we helped hand out flyers, from 11:30 AM-2 PM. Stand organizers requested for six volunteers to help hand out flyers, filled with pictures and information on prices and deals. Next to each picture of a certain firework were QR codes customers could scan to see videos of the firework in action, which was a clever idea to carry out. Before the stand officially opened at 12, we socialized and talked about a variety of things, such as tv shows and school. During this time, two shoppers came early so Natalie, our co-publicist/historian gave them flyers to preview fireworks. When 12 o’clock came, a numerous amount of customers arrived and began their firework purchases. We stood in front of the stand, greeting people and asked if they would like a flyer, so they can get an idea of what they would like to purchase. The majority of people took a flyer and said thanks, while others already had a coupon/flyer. After I handed a family a flyer, the dad asked if I could take a photo of him. I said yes that I could, but he was joking and the mom apologized because he is too embarrassingly obsessed with himself, which made us all laugh. Immediately afterwards, our Secretary, Hannah was able to hand out many flyers to incoming customers. In the times between waiting for more people to come, we continued socializing and took a few funny photos as well. All of us switched shoes with one another and attempted Asian squatting that made for hilarious memories. Later on, Patrick our Treasurer, and Kevin our President, each handed out flyers to families who smiled as they were happy to take them. Hailey our Bulletin Editor, and Patrick gave flyers to more customers soon after. Before we knew it, it was 2 and sadly our shift was over. That certain firework stand had a distinct amount of Edison representation because while there being Edison KIWIN’S volunteering, a number of profits from the stand were also raised for Edison’s Model United Nations and the Edison High School Foundation. The Model United Nations additionally held a bake sale next to the stand as well. In fact for half the time, they cheered and yelled things along the lines of “Edison Bake Sale” and included Edison KIWIN’S for one or two. It was a great time being there to represent our school, serving the community and volunteering for 4th of July spirit.

LA QUINTA - Gretchen Lam

DINOSAURS TO PEOPLE On a bright and sunny Sunday morning, the Heritage Museum of Orange County became the center of attention for the city of Santa Ana. The museum was hosting a history-enriched and fun-filled event: From Dinosaurs to People, and La Quinta KIWIN’S got to be a part of it! KIWINNERS arrived at the museum at 10:00 AM, awestruck at the many activities the event was harboring. Large tortoises roamed the venue’s grass, and multiple companies had set up their booths, each of them displaying tons of reptiles and amphibians, from simple ball pythons to amazing blue-tongued skinks! Volunteers then received their tasks, which included (but were not limited to) running the arts and craftsbooth, overseeing the owl pellet dissection table, and hosting fun games! Within half an hour of being assigned a job, the staff had taught each of the volunteers exactly how to do their task, so there was little to no confusion concerning what needed to be done. Once the museum gates opened at 11:00 AM, families with people of all ages began to gradually trickle in. Towards the middle of the shift, each area of the event was fairly busy. Volunteers worked in groups of two to four people, with the museum staff checking in every so often. Despite the relatively large amounts of people at each station, the workload was not as heavy as it seemed. The event catered more towards young children, so very few complications arose. There were only a few moments where the museum staff needed to be asked for, but difficulties were easily solved. As the event progressed, and the shift came to a close, Fountain Valley KIWIN’S members began to arrive. The museum staff asked La Quinta volunteers to explain their tasks to Fountain Valley’s members, and in little to no time, the shift came to an end. Overall, From Dinosaurs to People provided an excellent volunteering opportunity - KIWINNERS learned interesting factoids about prehistoric time and were also able to interact with numerous members of their community! 15
