EDISON DEANN LE During the bus ride to the Phoenix Decorating Studio, the excitement of Edison KIWIN’S to help illuminate rose floats, accumulated and was noticeable while we socialized with Marina KIWIN’S. We were scheduled to volunteer from 4PM to 11PM, having to meet up at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center by 1:30PM and needing to leave by 12:15AM, after we finished. Unfortunately, our club was separated but luckily we were all in groups and six of us were able to stay together. We were also assigned our favorite job, which was gluing the flower mediums onto the floats. For me, Hailey, and Darren, this was our second time returning, while Ashley, Annice, and Alis did not know the fun that lies ahead. Since most of us were apprehensive to go on the scaffold and work with heights, we glued gorgeous, golden and violet chrysanthemums on the deck of our float, specifically the fin of the submarine. As we helped illustrate floats, me and Ashley talked about how we dreaded the soon arrival of school with Hailey and Annice joining in. Darren and Alis were diligently gluing flowers on the other side of the fin. A few hours passed and dinner came. After eating, Ashley and I went back in early so I could take photos of floats and since there was nothing else to do. We continued decorating the fin and talking, while a screen on the Honda float besides us played sports commercials. A few minutes after dinner ended and everyone came back, we all completed the fin and worked on different projects. During this, I was able to take a few photos of our club working. Then Ashley, Alis, and I went on scaffolding to work on a propeller. While they were calm, I apparently looked scared for my life and our group leader asked if I was okay. I nodded yes, and continued decorating, but I could not try to work on another scaffolding, which seemed more rickety. Ultimately, our shift ended, and divisional and club photos were eventually taken, with smiling yet tired members. To get the seats we wanted on the bus, Edison swiftly ran. My phone hilariously fell out of my backpack while charging and my friend, Jocelyn, said it looked like I was walking my phone like a dog. Because this was my favorite KIWIN’S volunteering event, I was excited to return and hopefully others either had or gained this feeling. Although many say the fun you have at the Rose Float Decorating depends on what job you are assigned, I would say it depends on who you are around. Many of us were able to meet and bond with members in not only other clubs, but our own as well, making this event more memorable.

GARDEN GROVE VANESSA HO Ho Ho Ho! It’s Garden Grove KIWIN’S coming to town this Christmas season! Garden Grove KIWIN’S made way to Huntington Beach to volunteer for the Santa Claus For A Cause event. Meeting us there was Orange County School of the Arts KIWIN’S! The organizers of the event provided us with green elf t-shirts as well as head-to-toe Santa Claus costumes so that we could get in the jolly spirit! The organizers were also kind enough to give us donuts, cookies, hot chocolate, and more! We were assigned to work at the start and finish line after we finished checking in and wearing our attire. We were in charge of starting the race and ending the race. Some members were assigned to pop smoke bombs to start off the race and some members were assigned to record the times of the racers finishing. The remaining members were assigned to stand on the sides and cheer on the runners. Although the task of recording the finish times of the racers was difficult because there were many people finishing within the same time frame, we were able to pull through and not miss anyone. After the race ended, we walked around to pick up trash from overflowing trash cans. When we were done with everything, we walked around to look at the different booths that were giving away free food and goodies. The Santa Claus For A Cause event was definitely a fun event to get in the spirit of Christmas! From the elf and Santa Claus attire to the Christmas inflatables blown up, the event was awesome! Overall, we had an amazing time volunteering! We look forward to volunteer at the next Santa Claus For A Cause event as well as with Orange County School of the Arts KIWIN’S again! 11
