MY KIWIN’S STORY I learned about KIWIN'S not from my school's club rush but in 4th grade when my older sister became a KIWIN'S member. At the time the name didn't have any importance-just a club my sister was in. But every weekend she would leave for a couple hours with her 3 friends, get a new free shirt, and, if I was lucky, a new snack for me to try. Eventually, I was in high school and, along with my other friends, joined KIWIN'S and went to their first general meeting. Their hip thrusts and loud screams surprisingly didn't scare me away and I finally went to my first KIWIN'S event shortly after. With that first event, I really felt what it was like to be part of something bigger. Even if it was something small, like handing out a couple cups of water to marathoners, we were able to help the community and have fun while doing it. I joined many clubs during my freshman year but, KIWIN'S was the one that stuck with me the most and it has been an essential part of my high school experience. As my freshman year ended in KIWIN'S, I wanted to be a part of what really happens within the club. I questioned if I was even qualified to apply for a board position. I had so many doubts but they were all washed away as board members recommended me to run for a position. Even though I spelled KIWIN'S wrong on my application and was sure that I bombed the interview, I was given my first board position and leadership position as Sophomore Representative. My eyes were opened to the well-oiled machine that ran my school club. All the people who were so deeply committed to this high school club and made friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime. After holding this board position, I was ready for the next step and ran for Vice President and luckily got it. This term was what really opened my eyes to the large community we have in Jet. From each divisional event and going to one's hosted by other schools, I felt what it was like to be apart of something bigger. And without evening know I was on the path to something greater. I took the lunge with another Vice President and applied for district board positions. This leads to where I am today, Jet Lieutenant Governor, and I am so thankful for this opportunity. KIWIN'S was a club I joined for their welcoming ohana and service events anyone could go to. This club has shaped who I am today and I cannot wait to give back to its members. With passion and service,

Johnny Tran Jet Division KIWIN’S Lieutenant Governor Stay tuned for more KIWIN’S features on board and general members ! Want to be featured and share your KIWIN’S story? Message me on facebook :)

PRESIDENTS’ UPDATES Edison During the month of May, Edison KIWIN'S participated in Eliminate Week to raise awareness about MNT! We posted infographics, baby pictures, pictures with our moms, and made an E-Lemon-ate video to educate our members. We also participated in the Jet Division Notes to Nurses project and for AP week, we posted a motivational graphic on social media instead of our typical sticky-note motivational posters at school. Edison also helped give a presentation via zoom at an HB Kiwanis meeting about Jet updates and to raise money for the Unicef Coronavirus fund. We also made digital cards and delivered treats (safely through our social distancing Kiwanis Advisor John Partington!) to our local grocery store workers to show appreciation for our front line workers and all their past support for our club's bake sales! We have also recently started our Edison Senior Sendoff project in which we have partnered with Edison Key Club to complete. We are collecting messages for the Edison Class of 2020 and making digital graphic cards for social media to spread encouragement and nice words as our Edison seniors’ high school experience comes to a close.

Fountain Valley To kick start the new month of May, Fountain Valley KIWIN's released more online service events while still following social distancing protocols. A week long event was hosted on primarily social media called Keeping up with KIWIN’S in which each day a member would share a photo or message. The primary purpose for this event was for members to come together collectively and showcase that we can still make a difference as a club in quarantine. Members posted messages to seniors and teachers to show appreciation and gratitude for the abrupt end to the school year as well as photos of great memories. We also held our first virtual general meeting on Zoom which was a wonderful opportunity for our members to catch up and connect more directly. Other activities included Workout Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, and Flex (KIWIN’S merch) Friday! Despite having both Keeping up with KIWIN’S and the district's Eliminate Week overlap, we had plenty of members participate to raise awareness for the disease. With the rough patch at the beginning of term, having less volunteer opportunities, our club has still shown unity. We miss you and hope you're all doing well in quarantine!

Garden Grove Despite everything that has been going on, Garden Grove KIWIN’S has remained consistent with quality content for our quaranti-nees. For the month of May, GGKIWIN’S has been busy with both school-wide and personal projects. As a club, we planned an event that lasted from mid-April to the end of May. This event focused on encouraging members to give back to GGHS by making digital and/or physical cards for our faculty. We realized that most members were adapting to changes in their daily/school lives, so we created this event in hopes of giving members a sense of normalcy and a way to brighten their faculty’s day during these uncertain times. Throughout the month, both our club’s board and general members have worked tirelessly, dedicating our time and effort to this event. We have received over 110 card submissions. Huge shoutout to our members! Additionally, GG KIWIN'S has also been working on a personal project. From the beginning of April to the end of May, we have been planning and organizing our club’s first newsletter, which would commit to delivering wholesome messages and monthly memory/event recaps to our quaranti-nees. The club newsletter, set to release on June 31st, would bring together GG KIWIN'S as a whole and connect members on a more interpersonal level. Also, we’re planning to use our newsletter as a way to keep in touch with our local Kiwanis! Due to unforeseen circumstances, GG KIWIN'S has decided to push back the release of our newsletter, which was originally set for June 1st, to the 31st in light of honoring and promoting the Black Lives Matter movement. Ultimately, GGKIWIN’S has always been committed to our mission of innovative service events, and this pandemic certainly hasn’t changed that!

La Quinta In May, La Quinta has participated in the district-wide Eliminate Project to fight and raise awareness for MNT! We also participated in the divisional "Notes to Nurses" event in which about 100 notes were from La Quinta. Lastly, La Quinta is currently planning division-wide senior stoles as gratitude for the seniors who will be graduating this year. :))

Los Amigos since quarantine, it’s been hard to retain membership and hold service events but we’ve been trying to make up for that by creating online service projects of our own. for example, we had the “call a fellow manatee” one and a “teacher appreciation” one as well. in addition, i’ve held a board meeting to keep my board members up to date and we’re all working hard to do our part.

Marina This month we’ve been doing our best to come up with ways to stay active (while keeping in mind that APs would consume much of members’ time haha). So, our solution to this was to create a post to encourage our members and their friends for AP season :)) This was done on instagram, and members were able to comment and address just their friends or all AP students in general. We are proud we were able to unite members and promote positivity in the stressful times of APs haha. Other than that, early May we announced our spirit chair! We’ve also continued some service projects :))

OCSA Some things that’s been going in my club is that we recently had a club meeting to introduce our service event for donating to the elderly! My board has mainly been adjusting to each other and our positions; we’re all very new at this, but we’re excited to learn.

Segerstrom This past month, Segerstrom KIWIN’S has focused a lot on giving our thanks! We had Letters of Appreciation, where students created letters to email to their teachers, the Eliminate Project, where we raised awareness for MNT, Celebrating Mother’s Day where a template was given for people to post stories thanking their mothers, Notes to Nurses where we have thanks to frontline workers who risk their lives everyday to help the community, and Covid-19 spirit week ,where each day, a template is given for students to update their life in quarantine!!

JET DIVISION STANDS WITH BLACK LIVES MATTER From Jet Division : Jet KIWIN’S, as a club, has worked hard and served countless hours to better improve our community. Now it is time as a family, an ohana, to reach our hands out to those who need it most: those suffering from these injustices. It is time for us to take action. Let’s do our part and sign petitions and donate where you can to support this movement. As a club built on the diversity of its members, it is time to lend a hand and give a voice to the silence minority. From CNH KIWIN’S : Racism and inequality have no place in our home, school, and Ohana.

Ohana means nobody gets left behind. As a service organization built on inclusiveness, caring, leadership, character building, and Ohana, we devote ourselves to the improvement of our community, raising awareness, and fighting against inequalities and injustices of any kind in any community. It is our duty to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and amplify their voices as leaders, servants, and an Ohana. There is much work to do; now is the time to listen, learn, and lend a hand. To the Black community: we see you, we hear you, and we will continue to stand with you.

Both Los Amigos and Fountain Valley KIWIN’S are selling stickers to raise money and awareness about BLM. All proceeds will go to NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). bit.ly/BLMstickers bit.ly/fvkiwinsblmsticker
