LA QUINTA GRETCHEN LAM S-U-P-E-R SUPER STAR IS WHAT YOU ARE! Despite the rainy weather, LQ KIWIN’S had no trouble helping out at the annual Surf City Marathon! Members woke up at the crack of dawn before heading over to Huntington Beach, ready to volunteer at such an iconic event. However, call-time could have gone more smoothly - a few members had gotten lost along the way. Though communication was constant, it was relatively difficult to provide members with the correct directions. Board members called each individual volunteer to ensure they had the right address. In the end, all members safely made it to the correct station and still had plenty of time to prepare for the main race! Upon grouping LQ KIWIN’S together, the event coordinators came by and supplied volunteers with a variety of items to pass out to the runners! These goodies included: electrolyte gel, drinks, snacks, and more! As the day progressed and the clouds came by, the races gradually came to a start. First off was the 5k! KIWINNERS cheered their hearts out for the runners while enthusiastically waving their goodies around! Afterwards, Huntington Beach’s streets continued to be filled with so much glee and cheer as the half-marathon began! KIWINNERS cheered especially hard for a few LQ teachers who were running in the half-marathon! Finally, the marathon started. 26 grueling miles was not enough to stop the brave runners, and the gloomy weather was certainly not enough to stop the spirited members! Once the races all came to an end, members were in charge of helping clean up! Volunteers put away tables and swept the streets clear of trash! By the time KIWINNERS were done with their shifts, Huntington Beach was cleaner than ever! With the event coordinators’ goodbye, the event officially ended, and KIWINNERS headed back home. People were decked out in awesome volunteer shirts and had large amounts of goodies to bring home! Overall, Surf City Marathon fostered many opportunities to directly help the community. LQ KIWIN’S will certainly return next time! 3

MARINA LEAH KURIHARA At the end of January, Marina KIWIN’S held their first Dog Week which was a week of service events dedicated to shelter dogs that were held at our high school. After school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we had our members come to our faculty advisor’s room to help us make toys and blankets for WAGS, a company that helps dogs and dog owners in need. Tuesday was a day of making rope-ball toys for the dogs. Around two, after everyone has gotten out of school, and members of the KIWIN’S ohana met in our faculty advisor’s room to start the challenge of making rope balls. This proved to be much more difficult than previously thought as everyone in the room had different youtube videos streaming hoping one would show them the proper way of assembling just one. Some were able to finish quickly and some struggled a little bit. Everyone was trying their best to help each other in the process, so by the end of the hour, everyone had finished assembling at least one toy for the dogs. After laughter and a little bit of perseverance, all the ropes were tied and then sent off to the dogs. The next day we again met in the room of our advisor, hoping the next task would be much easier than the last (which it was). On Wednesday, the members of Marina KIWIN’S set out to make chew toys for dogs out of old t-shirts. And members could earn hours for not only going to the event but for bringing shirts as well!. Members cut, braided and tied the shirts again and again and helped us manage to make over 200 toys! It was truly amazing to see all the hard work the members to achieve this goal. The next and last day of dog week we made blankets for WAGS. On this day, from 2:30 to 4:00, we made blankets by tying the edges of frayed pieces of material. Knot after knot were tied and with everyone’s help we managed to make 12 blankets for the dogs! To end dog week with a bang, our club planned on holding a dog walking social where our members to go to the park with us with their dogs and just hang out! Sadly, it was forecasted that it was going to rain that day, so we had to cancel it. Despite the rain, Dog Week was so much fun as we got to help dogs in need and grow closer with club member! Marina KIWIN’S will certainly hold a service event like this next year!
