OCTOBER ARF: MARINA NATHAN LORANG

Tulle, Ribbon, Cut Friday, October 12th, 2:30 PM, room 132. School got out as usual, but it was just the beginning of a fun afternoon for Marina KIWIN’S! Taking place one day after our very first meeting, our tutus & lei making event attracted many new members! Right after school ended, members flooded into the classroom eager to meet new people and make bracelet leis and tutus for Fall Rally. A station was set up for members to choose the colors of their lei strings while tutu materials were laid out on tables. Most tables were organized into groups where members could sit together and socialize while they created the tutus and weaved leis. Board members gathered fellow members to teach them how to make the tutus or weave the leis. Then, we turned the music up while members worked hard to weave the leis and assemble the tutus. In fact, so many members came and worked so hard that we ran out of tulle for the tutus near the end! Luckily, we had plenty of ribbon to make leis and members found just as much, if not more enjoyment in making them instead while a few board members went out to buy more tulle. Everyone worked dilligently, sang along to songs, and socialized until around 3:45. By then, we had made a handful of leis and around 10 tutus! Members helped clean up the classroom and rearranged the desks back to the set up it was at before. Not only did they help us make awesome Fall Rally merchandise to support the Pediatric Trauma Program, but they also took away lots of happy memories and new friendships! It was a very successful event, and Marina KIWIN’S hopes to have another social soon! 3 13

NOVEMBER ARF: LA QUINTA GRETCHEN LAM Jingle bells, jingle bells! Jingle all the way! What better way is there to get into the Christmas spirit than by volunteering at the Run for a Claus? Members woke up before the crack of dawn to be a part of this festive run! Upon arriving at UCI, KIWINNERS checked in and received their fun elf uniforms - complete with a shirt and light-up hat! Once decked out in holiday garments, members awaited further instruction. There were a few complications concerning the assignment of jobs, but within a short period of time, the issues were resolved. Volunteers were stationed all throughout the university. Jobs included but were not limited to: supervising the hot cocoa booths, directing traffic and people, setting up fences, and distributing mugs to the runners! Members also stepped up and assisted the community, as shown when a few helped a struggling staff member carry items to her car. At such a crowded event, some of the tasks were a bit difficult to manage. This was especially seen at the mug-distribution tent, where some runners did not want to take their mugs. However, volunteer staff had told members that the runners must take them. As a result, some of the distribution was slowed, but further persuasion from KIWINNERS convinced the runners to accept the mugs. After setting up all of the booths, the run began! Members had to remain at their stations, but that did not stop them from cheering on the runners! Volunteers looked amazing as they festively jumped up and down in their elf gear. Once the run ended, KIWINNERS assisted in the cleaning-up of the event. They took down the fences, cleared their stations, and even picked up trash around the campus. After all of their hard work, members were finally able to freely explore the event grounds. Volunteers received all kinds of goodies (including cookies!) in addition to their elf outfits! Overall, the event was an amazing start to the day. With excellent organization and countless opportunities to interact with the community, LQ KIWIN’S will definitely find themselves at Run for a Claus again!
