ccording to the online Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word “connection” relates to coherence, continuity and people having an association or common interest(s); something that connects, a link. “Link” sums up the intent of this magazine. Whether you are new to the community or you have been here over 20 years, many organizations here offer so many programs that, without this magazine as a reference, it is impossible to know about all the things available to the local Jewish community. The coronavirus pandemic has required us to pivot Federation Board Chair Jane Schiff and to doing everything in a virtual kind of way. Notwith- Federation President/CEO Jeffrey Feld standing, we have all found a way to stay connected. It would seem that, in the immediate future, we will continue in a virtual platform. By joining a group, attending a program, going to a religious service, seeing a film, volunteering or reaching out to your community, which is here and waiting for your involvement, you enhance your life and enrich the entire Jewish community. We are a community because of the connections we share. We are a community because of the programs we attend. We are a community because we help one another, supporting each of the endeavors listed in this publication. Due to space limitations, each organization is unable to list all that they offer. Who is “Federation” and what do we do?

Federations and network communities are doing the same; all are connected through the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). Founded on the principles of unity and dignity for all, today’s Federation has evolved into a major fundraising, planning and coordinating entity of the Greater Naples Jewish community. The Jewish Federations of North America are meeting places for Jews from all backgrounds, ensuring the continuity of the Jewish people here at home, through national initiatives, in Israel and in 60 countries globally. Through your support of the Federation’s Annual Community Campaign, you play a vital role in helping Federation “get the job done.” Think of it as a triangle: Federation, its agencies and you. So, if anyone asks you who Federation is – just point to yourself – because that’s where it all begins.

Where does the money go?

The local Campaign allocation process involves a committee of volunteers as well as Federation staff. They take part in this important process, which balances available resources with community priorities through a grant process.

Locally, the Federation makes a grant to the Naples Senior Center at JFCS in support of the social services it provides for our community. And grants are made in support of a variety of educational and cultural programs conducted by local synagogues, the Holocaust Museum and other local Jewish organizations. Additionally, several national organizations receive support from the domestic allocation. Internationally, your contribution works to support a broad range of social, educational and vocational needs throughout the Jewish world. Our allocation to JFNA is distributed to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), which brings relief to the needy and works to revitalize Jewish life in 60 countries, and the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), which rescues people from countries and resettles them in Israel. We also provide supplemental grants in support of special programs and projects that our community has embraced, like Neve Michael Youth & Children’s Village in Pardes Hana, Israel; the Sapir Community Center in Kfar Saba, Israel; transportation and Shabbat dinners in Cuba; and the Progressive Synagogue Preschool in Kiev, Ukraine. Giving tzedakah to an umbrella organization like Federation, which then distributes it to a number of member agencies, has its roots in early Jewish history. In small towns and large cities, donations were given to a communal kupah as an expression of devotion to community and the entire Jewish people. It demonstrates a love of community that is without limitation.

he answer is simple: It’s you – and every member of the Jewish community of Greater Naples and the surrounding areas. The Jewish Federation of Greater Naples is the thread that runs through the fabric of our Jewish community, its organizations and services, connecting us all. The Federation is your center for Jewish Philanthropy. The Federation supports programs for Jewish people in need in Greater Naples, Israel and throughout the world, providing food for the hungry and counseling for the troubled, spearheading rescue and relief efforts for isolated Jews in distressed regions, and funding innovative Jewish educational and unity initiatives. The Federation creates a sense of community for thousands of Jewish residents in Greater Naples and its surrounding areas by creating and supporting programs to further Jewish learning, identity, pride and culture. Federation meets the challenge of providing for the needs of our Jewish brethren, wherever they may be, from young children and families to seniors. The Jewish Federation of Greater Naples is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing connection, advocacy, education and care for anyone in need through its network of beneficiary and constituent agencies, and local Jewish organizations. Pomegranate Society

The Federation’s Pomegranate Society, formed in 2017, represents a new level of giving for women’s philanthropy. A minimum gift to the Annual Campaign of $1,800 in her own name qualifies a woman to be a member of the Pomegranate Society. The Pomegranate Society program represents the best of what Federation does, bringing together likeminded women to do a world of good – promoting, supporting, enhancing and celebrating Jewish life.

New Building/ Capital Campaign

The Jewish Federation of Greater Naples is in the process of building a new home. This decision was based on the information that was gathered from the Needs Assessment/Demographic Study that was conducted by Brandeis University, in 2017. At this time, rezoning has been unanimously granted by the Collier County Board of County Commissioners. The goal of the capital campaign is $14 million. Currently, we have commitments of $7.8 million. We hope that everyone in the community will help bring the dream to fruition,

The Jewish Federation of Greater Naples has a legacy partner called the TOP (Tampa, Orlando, Pinellas) Jewish Foundation. TOP began over three decades ago as a regional endeavor of three Jewish Federations. Since its inception, TOP has grown to manage nearly $50 million of the community’s assets and taken a leading role in promoting and securing legacy gifts and commitments, ensuring a strong Jewish future. TOP prides itself on being the only Jewish Foundation that maintains a strict anti-terror and anti-BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) investment policy. It has worked with its investment manager, Goldman Sachs, to create a screening tool that does not allow

Past speakers include Alan Dershowitz, Ted Koppel, Jeffrey Toobin, Rabbi Harold Kushner, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin and Dr. Daniel Gordis. Our Sixth Annual Greater Naples Jewish Book Festival features 21 authors at 19 events. The community Chanukah celebrations in Naples and on Marco Island are always festive events, with the lighting of the giant menorah. The Federation has sponsored visits and performances of the Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan since 2015 and will continue to do so on an annual basis.

Publications

The Federation publishes the Federation Star, a monthly newspaper that is mailed to more than 3,400 Jewish households in the Greater Naples area.

The newspaper is the one publication that ties together our Jewish community. If something local is happening that is Jewish-related, you’ll read about it in the Federation Star. The latest and past issues can be viewed online at jewishnaples.org. The Federation also compiles, updates and distributes the annual Community Directory for use by the Jewish community. And this copy of Connections is published by the Federation.

Community Calendar

The Federation, as the community clearinghouse to coordinate services, compiles and maintains a calendar for scheduling meetings and events of all Jewish organizations in the area, in an effort to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC)

he JCRC’s primary mission is to promote and enhance relationships between the Jewish community and the general community of Greater Naples. The JCRC collaborates with a number of groups, participating in programs and activities that promote religious freedom, separation of religion from government and social justice issues. The membership of JCRC consists of representatives from Jewish organizations serving our community as well as at-large members. Member diversity enables the JCRC to represent the thinking of the Jewish community on social issues of community-wide interest. Among the JCRC’s traditional activities are the following programs:

Cultural and Educational Programming

The JCRC sponsors several events during Florida Jewish History Month (January), including the annual JCRC/ Friends of the Collier County Library Klezmer Revival Band Concert. It is a participant, and encourages all Jewish community members to join, in the annual Martin Luther King Day parade. The major community event sponsored by the JCRC is the annual Jewish Community Day of Learning, at which a variety of presenters with expertise in numerous topics share their knowledge with attendees. The purpose of this event is to provide the opportunity for everyone in our community to learn something of interest and connect with aspects of our shared Jewish heritage. In 2021, the 5th Annual Day of Learning will be conducted virtually and will include both a Day and Evening of Learning. The daytime event is entitled, “It’s Chai Time to Visit Jewish Neighbors.” Speakers will “take”

us to three Jewish communities to learn about Crypto Jews as well as Jews in Persia and China. The evening session will have clergy of three faiths discussing their experiences dealing with the pandemic.

Human Needs Award

The JCRC and JFGN give this award to acknowledge the positive contributions of several select nonprofit organizations in our community. Annually, monetary awards are given to two small nonprofit agencies. The objective is to identify agencies who serve a severely means-limited,

Annually, this Educator Grant Award recognizes middle and high school teachers, librarians, media specialists, guidance counselors and administrators who demonstrate outstanding, unique educational initiatives countering bigotry and bullying in the schools. The underlying purpose is for these programs to be replicated and broadly applied in the school system. Nominees’ lessons or activities must be of their own design or adaptations from other programs and should be able to show evidence of a positive nature as a result of implementation. These lessons or activities should teach students to Stand Up for Justice, no matter what religious, racial, cultural or other differences exist. A committee of experienced educators evaluates programs submitted for consideration, selecting the two programs that best achieve the objectives of the award program to receive the monetary award.

Catholic-Jewish Dialogue

The Catholic-Jewish Dialogue engages people of both faiths in understanding our long history and to advance the cause of mutual understanding and appreciation for our differences as well as our commonalities. To achieve these goals, the CJD plans events throughout the year, including the Kristallnacht Commemoration, films, book

discussions, teen programs, interfaith weekends, Passover Seders and much more.

Anti-Semitism Task Force

The Task Force fulfills the function of promoting the security of Jewish organizations, religious institutions and the Jewish community. The JCRC and the Federation serve as a collection point for reporting, facilitating assistance to the victim(s) and making referrals to the appropriate agencies where corrective measures are needed. A yearly report is produced and shared with the appropriate outlets. The Federation works directly with local law enforcement agencies to handle anti-Semitism and hate crimes.

Legislative Activities Affecting the Jewish Community

The JCRC monitors local, state and federal legislation and its effect on the Jewish community. For state issues, it works in conjunction with other JCRCs throughout Florida. For federal and international issues affecting Jews throughout the nation and the world, it works with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), the national organization for JCRCs. That work includes advocacy for Israel – an activity that is the primary function of the Israel Advocacy Committee.

he IAC’s mission includes providing informational and educational programming to the community regarding current issues in Israel and its role in world affairs. To meet these goals, the committee presents films, guest speakers and discussions throughout the year on current topics, providing a historical perspective. The committee diligently monitors and responds appropriately to relevant newspaper articles and editorials. Among other programming during the coming season, the IAC will present several speakers, virtual walking tours from Israel, and the Tzofim (Israel Scouts) Friendship Caravan, who visit annually and perform at several venues throughout the Greater Naples area. his year, following the signing of a 50-year lease containing a 25-year renewal option with Temple Shalom, we began the process of fulfilling two pertinent requirements needing to be met in order to design and construct our new building.

Rezoning the Property

First, the 4.3-acre undeveloped lot, west of Temple Shalomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parking lot, needed to be rezoned from residential use to one compatible with the approved usage on Temple Shalomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s developed tracts. Where are we in the process? In October and November, we will have our final rezoning hearings with the Collier County government. October 1 is the date for the Collier County Planning Commission hearing, followed by our final hearing with the Board of Collier County Commissioners on November 10. Marc Saperstein, JFGN Vice Chair, has been the Chair of Project 2021, this Herculean effort, with Merlin Lickhalter, a JFGN Board Member, as his cochair, and James Knafo as our architect. With full disclosure, James was a Federation Board member before he was hired to be our architect, going through a process of bidding against three other firms before being awarded our nod. he monthly newspaper of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, the Federation Star is the one publication that ties the Jewish community of Greater Naples and surrounding areas together. If something local is happening that is Jewishrelated, you’ll find out about it in the pages of the Federation Star. First published 29 years ago, the Federation Star offers news and updates on all Jewish-related local events, including Jewish film and book festivals, holiday celebrations, book study groups, timely lectures and concerts. Readers also get updates from the area’s five synagogues, schools and numerous local Jewish organizations.

Rounding out its coverage, the newspaper includes the following sections: Focus on Youth, Israel & the Jewish World, Commentary and Jewish Interest. Mailed free to the Jewish households in the area, the Federation Star is also available at the Federation offices and several local synagogues. Additionally, a digital version can be found at jewishnaples.org, where readers can view the most recent issue and access an archive of past issues. The mission of the Federation Star is to represent Jewish life in the area by providing the voice that reports news, information, programs and events important to the local Jewish community. Helen Weinfeld – Naples’ First Jewish Historian (2014)

Helen and her husband, Joe, moved to Naples in the late 1960s, when segregation still existed, and Jews were few.

Gloria and Bill Lipman – Two of the Six L’s (2015)

Once an IRS employee, Murray’s retirement is one of the most active in the vicinity. Among many important achievements, Murray is unofficially known as the most powerful unelected official in the City of Naples.

Naples Jewish Film Festival

eading into its eighth season, the Naples Jewish Film Festival has gone virtual with a full lineup of films in place. As always, the Festival pulls its selections from current releases that are hits with Jewish film festivals throughout the world. Enjoy four powerful films in the comfort of your own home on four consecutive weekends. “They Ain’t Ready for Me” opens the Festival Feb. 26, 27 and 28. This timely documentary showcases a Black female rabbinical student and rock star, Tamar Manasseh. Tamar sits on a corner in one of the worst areas of Chicago, every day, working to restore family and community values. Festival Members can join us for an exclusive discussion with Tamar and the film’s director on Monday, March 1.

Next up, on March 5, 6 and 7, is “The Crossing,” the story of four children on a journey of survival in December 1942. “Broken Mirrors” on follows March 12, 13 and 14. The acclaimed Israeli actress, Shira Haas, known for her roles in Unorthodox and Shtisel, portrays a teenager overshadowed by her strict father. Closing weekend, March 19, 20 and 21, brings “A Starry Sky Above the Roman Ghetto” to the screen. Enjoy the cinematography of Italy and a fantastic soundtrack in a story that intertwines the past with the present.

A spectacular 2020-21 “virtual” Jewish Book Festival season features 21 authors at 19 events

eginning in December and concluding in March, the Sixth Annual Greater Naples Jewish Book Festival will once again offer a dazzling series of author events. This year’s festival, however, is quite different from previous festivals. Challenged by the social distancing requirements of the pandemic, the Festival is being presented virtually. By offering the events through Zoom, the Jewish Book Festival, a project of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, in cooperation with the Jewish Book Council, continues to be a key contributor to the cultural life of our community. While five of the 19 Festival Events will already have taken place by the time you read this article, you can still choose from 14 events. Here’s a rundown:

Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 3 p.m.

You will have the opportunity to hear from Debbie Cenziper, an investigative journalist who earned the 2007 Pulitzer Prize and the Robert F. Kennedy award for human rights reporting. Women’s Cultural Alliance

The Women’s Cultural Alliance (WCA), an affinity group of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, provides the opportunity for its members to meet other women, who share similar interests, through a wide variety of programming. If you are new to Southwest Florida, membership in WCA is an easy way to become an active participant in your new community. Life in Florida is greatly enhanced by the wonderful women and activities that make up WCA. This season marks the 13th year of WCA providing its membership with a multitude of cultural, educational, fitness and purely social events. WCA’s extensive program offerings typically include an array of interest groups for women who enjoy reading (seven book groups), playing games (bridge, mah jongg, scrabble and canasta), physical exercise (biking, bowling, chair yoga, golf, walking), food (“Serious Foodies”), music (“Jazz Junkies” and “Second Act Singers”), movies and film (two film groups), crafts (knitting, crocheting, needlepoint), birdwatching, drama and literature (“Modern Playwrights” and two “New Yorker” groups) – and more! In response to COVID-19, which required everyone to social distance, WCA had to drastically change its plans for this season. But not even this unprecedented pandemic could deter WCA from meeting its goal of bringing like-minded women together through programming that offers something for everyone. They jumped in full force and quickly took advantage of “Zoom” to continue their programming. WCA offers classes on topics ranging from cards and fused glass to Spanish, French, memoir writing, Ikebana, Jewish Genealogy and more. A highlight of WCA programming is its phenomenal Speaker Series. Unfortunately, the very popular bus trips to unique destinations had to be indefinitely postponed. WCA has always had a strong social component, with opportunities to meet new people and renew friendships. This year, the traditional Welcome Back Luncheon was transformed into the virtual celebration, “Happy Hour and a Half.” While Mah Jongg and Canasta Days as well as the International Pot Luck have to be postponed until next season, members still have opportunities to meet for tea, coffee, lunch or cocktails, and even to participate in art studio tours. However, this season, they will all be through Zoom. WCA is also proud to continue its annual sponsorship of the 2020-21 (virtual) Jewish Book Festival. One of the wonderful things about WCA activities is that they are all run by volunteers. Volunteering not only enables WCA to offer a wide variety of programs, it also provides an easy way to become involved and to make new friends. 24

WCA’s programming in Southwest Florida is year-round. To better serve its members, WCA offers programs for couples and has two “Satellite Groups,” each offering a wide variety of additional programs during the year: WCA North serves women who live in the Bonita Springs, Estero and South Fort Myers areas; WCA South serves members who live in the Southern and Eastern areas of Southwest Florida – along the East Trail down to Marco Island. The programs offered by WCA North and South are open to all WCA Members. WCA members had such a wonderful time in Southwest Florida that they wanted to be able to “take WCA home with them” in the summer. In response, WCA established “Summer Branches” in several areas throughout North America so that WCA members,

JCMI Saul I. Stern Cultural Series’ 27th Year

s a man who had vast contacts in government and the political world, Saul I. Stern was an important Washingtonian. Most importantly, he was devoted to the State of Israel. Saul and his wife, Marcia, were long-term residents of Marco Island and each year, they sponsored a tennis charity tournament to benefit The Immokalee Foundation. The Sterns also became active members of the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island (JCMI). The concept of a cultural series that would enhance the congregation, the greater community of Marco Island and the outlying communities, was introduced by the Sterns. Over the years, events have featured Ambassador Dennis Ross; Steve Emerson, the professor

who holds the Lerner Chair at Brandeis; the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s display of the voyage of the St. Louis; and leading musicians from the Naples Philharmonic. JCMI 2021 Events

he Jewish Congregation of Marco Island is known for its signature events — Monday Night Bingo, the Barbara P. Katz Mah Jongg Tournament, the Saul Stern Cultural Series and the Sidney R. Hoffman Jewish Film Festival, to name a few. This is a unique time, when we must socialize with great caution. Though JCMI looks forward to resuming all its splendid events, it will remain closed until its large following can be safely accommodated. However, with social distancing and today’s technology, JCMI continues to offer a few of its most precious gems.

The Women’s Book Club

The book club resumed Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m., with an outdoor venue. The meeting took place on the beautiful grounds of the Synagogue. Chairs were provided, and participants brought a snack or bag lunch if they wished. This season’s first book was “Body and Soul” by Frank Conroy. Please see page ? for this season’s titles.

The Sidney R. Hoffman Memorial Jewish Film Festival

JCMI is proud of being the first Jewish Film Festival in Southwest Florida with its premiere of the Sidney R.

Hoffman Jewish Film Festival in 2000. Films offered focus on Jewish themes and Jewish life. This year, the virtual venue is free of charge. The Holocaust Museum Celebrates 20th Anniversary

he Holocaust Museum & Janet G. and Harvey D. Cohen Education Center in Naples will celebrate its 20th anniversary in November 2021! What a journey it has been, from the founding inspiration of the “Out of the Ashes” Golden Gate Middle School project created by teachers David Bell and Michelle Lee, to the creation, 2019 opening and expansion of the multiaward-winning new Museum.

Education Mission

The Museum’s mission is to teach the lessons of the Holocaust to inspire action against bigotry, hatred and violence. Since its founding, over 175,000 Southwest Florida students, grades K-12 through college/university, have been impacted by the Museum’s education programs. Students and visitors are encouraged to not only reflect on the importance of respect for others, but to commit to do the right thing by taking action to stand up for others in need. The education department’s ageappropriate programming, conducted on campus pre-COVID-19, is now available on the Museum’s website. Museum Field Trips continue to be available for small student

groups accompanied by teachers and chaperones. The Holocaust education workshops for teachers are now available on the Museum’s website and YouTube channel as a year-long monthly series. This provides teachers with lesson plans, student activities and videos, which can be downloaded at their convenience. The workshops are funded through a generous legacy gift of the Merrill Kuller Educator Series.

Vedem was a long-running underground magazine created by teenagers and young men documenting their lives in the Theresienstadt Ghetto. The exhibit will begin in November and run through the end of the year. Special virtual events are planned to accompany these exhibits. he 5th Annual Jewish Community Relations Council Day of Learning will be a virtual Day and Evening of Learning this year. “It’s Chai Time to Visit Jewish Neighbors” is the theme for Sunday, March 7, when speakers will “take” us to three Jewish communities. During this interesting and uplifting afternoon, Cantor Donna Azu, Dr. Ron Duncan Hart and Dr. Steven Derfler will tell us about Crypto Jews as well as communities in Persia and China. Cantor Donna Azu received a Bachelor of Music degree in Opera Performance and Music Education from California State University, attended the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music in New York City, taught both music and theater, and sang professionally. Having earned a master’s degree in Sacred Music Cantor Donna Azu from the Hebrew Union College in 2009 and her Cantorial Ordination in 2010, Cantor Azu has served as co-clergy at Temple Shalom in Naples, Florida since 2010 Ron Duncan Hart, Ph.D. is a cultural anthropologist and the Director of the Jewish Learning Channel, which provides educational film on Ron Duncan Hart, Ph.D. Jewish life. He is the former President of the Jewish Federation of New Mexico, has received numerous awards and served as the Program Director of the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society. 32

Hart is an invited lecturer and has written a number of books on Jewish life and cultural history, the more recent of which are, “Crypto-Jews: The Long Journey,” “Jews and the Arab World: Intertwined Legacies,” “Judaism,” and “Sephardic Jews: History, Religion and People.” He is co-author/editor of the award-winning book “Fractured Faiths: Spanish Judaism, the Inquisition and New World Identities.” Dr. Steven L. Derfler is an international educational consultant, archaeologist, historian and researcher, teacher and author. Dr. DerDr. Steven L. Derfler fler has been uncovering the histories of ancient civilizations for 45 years and brings insight to current political and social events. Throughout his career, he has worked aggressively to bring the community together for education and celebration of ethnic and cultural diversity. Dr. Derfler recently retired from the University of Wisconsin and has lectured in a wide variety of venues. He also served as the Minnesota Area Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee. As part of his commitment to diversity and international awareness, Dr.

Derfler has directed academic study tours to Israel and Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Greece and Turkey.

Evening Event

This year, nearly a year into the pandemic, individuals were curious about how clergy navigated this new world. To satisfy their curiosity, JCRC will present an added Evening of Learning, titled “Keeping the Faith and So Much More During the Pandemic.” Local clergy scheduled to participate are Rabbi Miller from Temple Shalom, Pastor Lonnie Mills from Macedonia Baptist Church, Reverend Edward Gleason from Naples United Church of Christ and Fr. Hugh McGuigan from our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Estero. The panel may answer questions about how they dealt with life cycle events, how they tried to bring comfort and faith when their buildings were closed, and what new approaches they developed. “All Things Jewish” at Beth Tikvah

s Naples’ conservative congregation, we strive to offer learning opportunities of solid Jewish intellectual content, such as “Jewish Values in a Changing World” (four sessions), developed by the Jewish Theological Seminary and “Jews in their History” (four sessions). Both programs are taught by Rabbi Chorny. Practice Makes Perfect: Hebrew in One Day will be taught by Rabbi and Aviva Chorny. These classes are scheduled for January and February.

This year’s Speaker Series amplifies the theme of “All Things Jewish,” with seven lectures given by congregants, either on Jewish subjects or on topics which highlight the speaker’s own expertise in a secular subject. As part of the series, Dr. June Sochen and Joyce Schrager return this year, on Jan. 28 and Feb. 7, for their very popular and always stimulating take on current events. Naples Senior Center at JFCS

aples Senior Center at JFCS empowers seniors and their families by giving them tools to address life’s challenges. Naples Senior Center, located at 5025 Castello Drive in Naples, provides services to the communities of Collier and southern Lee counties.

Senior Center

On Jan. 22, 2014, Naples Senior Center at JFCS opened the doors to the first senior center in Collier County. The Naples Senior Center is a vibrant place for seniors to socialize, receive services and participate in a variety of stimulating programs. Open to all denominations of adults 60 years and older, the Naples Senior Center helps them maintain a healthy, satisfying quality of life by providing services and activities in a nurturing environment. Presently, the Center has 1,400 members. Offering a weekly lunch program followed by entertainment, the Center is open five days a week. Over 100 different activities, including art classes, computer instruction, movie afternoons, lectures, cards, discussion groups, foreign language classes, book club, and tai chi and other exercise programs are part of the Center’s vibrant programs. Annual membership is $25 per person. There are no additional fees. Scholarships are available for those who cannot afford to pay. Reservations are requested for Lunch and More and specific programs. The Naples Senior Center provides a variety of core programs and services as follows:

Geriatric Case Management and Senior Outreach

The Naples Senior Center at JFCS Geriatric Case Management and Senior 36

Outreach program includes a variety of supportive services to frail seniors who are unable to come into the office. The program provides a wide range of services addressing the isolation of the frail elderly. Dementia Respite and Memory Support

The Center currently has 11 dementia respite groups for men and women who have been diag-nosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Seven groups are in Naples and two are on Marco Island. The four-hour, highly structured and supportive groups are facilitated by licensed mental health professionals and a corps of highly trained volunteers.

Activities include Dakim Brain Fitness; art and music therapy; activities that strengthen language and organizational skills; and reminiscence activities. The groups provide a cognitively stimulating experience in a safe and nurturing environment for the person with dementia and four hours of respite for the caregiver. Caregivers receive support through a variety of programs, including professionally facilitated support groups, individual support, socialization activities and membership in an exclusive Facebook group.

Early Memory Loss Program

The Early Memory Loss (EML) program is designed to preserve and challenge cognitive abilities, teach memory strategies and encourage active lifestyles. The program serves individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), early memory loss or individuals with a significant concern about their memory. The program is for individuals who are mindful of the challenges they are experiencing and choose to participate in group activities that promote brain health. It is facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.

Emotional Support Services

In the Center’s emotional support services offered to seniors and their families, licensed social workers and counselors assist with challenges brought about by life transitions such as aging, cognitive decline and loss of a loved one.

The Jewish Memorial Garden

n 1988, the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island entered into an agreement with the Marco Island Cemetery to create a section for Jewish burial called the Jewish Memorial Garden. It has grown from an initial 40 gravesites to the current 213. Any Jewish person, together with his or her Jewish or nonJewish spouse/partner or family member, will be allowed to be interned here. The JCMI Cemetery Committee works hard to ensure all Jewish burial customs are observed and the “Garden” remains a peaceful resting place. The Garden is located in the Marco Island Cemetery at the corner of Bald Eagle Drive and East Elkcam Circle. Over 108 years ago, one Jewish woman, Henrietta Szold, had the ability and determination to take action and create change — at a time when women were not even permitted to vote — and Hadassah was born. Hadassah, committed to strengthening the unity of the Jewish people, provides regional health care and medical research through the Hadassah Medical Organization and two hospitals in Jerusalem. Both provide world-class care for over one million admissions a year, regardless of race, religion or nationality. Hadassah emphasizes that healing is not only medical. It is about fixing

what is problematic in society: women’s health issues, women’s rights, antiSemitism and more. In its Virtual Museum of Southwest Florida Jewish History, JHSSWF continually expands its collection of

enerations of the Shoah of Southwest Florida (GenShoah) was formed in 2009 through an initiative by the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida. This group is not only for children of Holocaust survivors (2gs), but for all those who share our fourfold mission: “promotion of Holocaust education

and human rights, preservation of the history and memories of the Holocaust, connection of members of the Second Generation to one another and support of the Holocaust Museum & Cohen Education Center. GenShoah Southwest Florida presents programs from October to April and sends out a monthly informational newsletter announcing programs and related local and national events. GenShoah programs include “Movies That Matter,” Holocaust-themed films, meetings for 2gs to share their stories, local and nationally known speakers and Featured Speaker for the 2020 International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Sidney book discussions. (FIDF), a 501(c)(3) organization that cares for the educational and well-being needs of Israel’s soldiers. A group of Holocaust survivors founded FIDF in 1981 to recognize the courageous young Israeli men and women who join the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at age 18 to defend the State of Israel. FIDF has assumed the responsibility of providing these soldiers with love and support in an effort to ease the burden they carry on behalf of the Jewish community worldwide. Since its inception, FIDF has grown to over 150,000 loyal supporters across 20 chapters in the U.S. and Panama, and provides a range of well-being

programs for Israeli soldiers. These include the IMPACT! Scholarship Program, which grants four-year scholarships to combat veterans from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the Lone Soldiers Program, which supports soldiers who volunteered to leave their countries of origin to serve in the IDF. agen David Adom is Israel’s ambulance, blood services and disaster relief organization, serving as emergency medical first responders for the state’s more than 8 million people. he leading Jewish pluralistic teen movement, BBYO, aspires to involve more Jewish teens in more meaningful Jewish experiences, and it has been shaking the Naples community for eight groundbreaking years. It has reached as many as 50 Naples Jewish teens, and each year, it works to welcome more Jewish teens to the brother- and sisterhood that is BBYO Naples. The eighth- to 12th-grade chapters are Negev AZA #2560 (boys) and Mishpacha BBG #2552 (girls), which are a part of North Florida Region (NFR) BBYO, engaging teens from Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Melbourne, Gainesville, Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples. Each week, Negev and Mishpacha teens meet at the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples on Wednesdays for chapter programming and leadership training. Its Naples teens plan larger-scale events for the weekends, like day trips to Miami, private experiences at Revolution Cable Park, spa days, cycle or yoga studio takeovers, pickup basketball and football games, sorority themed events like bid day, and themed boys’ and girls’ sleepovers, to name a few.

NFR hosts three conventions each year, in fall, winter and spring. BBYO also promotes events such as International Convention (IC), the largest gathering of Jewish teens in the U.S., and summer programs and travel experiences like Chapter Leadership Training Camp (CLTC) and International Leadership Seminar in Israel (ILSI). Last year, Naples teens participated in IC, CLTC, ILSI and the March of the Living, with the assistance of the incredible Jewish Federation of Greater Naples as well as Temple Shalom’s Men’s Club. BBYO is indebted to the generosity of community partners and their commitment to assist all Jewish teens, assuring no teen is ever turned away from an experience due to monetary reasons. BBYO Connect aims to engage sixth to eighth graders in a variety of experiences for social, Judaic and community service programs. It offers five to six events each year, focusing only on the sixth- to eighth-grade Jewish community. An example of an activity being planned is a community-wide latke cookoff, complete with guest judges, raffles for swag and gift cards for our winning team.

What makes Naples BBYO special, is that the entire Jewish community of Naples supports our movement. It receives support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, Temple Shalom, Beth Tikvah and Chabad of Naples, with the goal of welcoming the entire Jewish community, from grades six to 12, to the movement. BBYO is supported by many donors who make up the Naples Jewish community, equating to a very successful youth program. The organization is also supported by the Naples BBYO Board of Directors, made up of dedicated community leaders, parents, advisors and BBYO staff. BBYO’s network of Jewish teens, alumni, parents, volunteers and philanthropists serves as the Jewish community’s most valuable platform for delivering fun, meaningful and affordable experiences to the post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah audience. Free Jewish Children’s Book Program

J Library is an international family engagement program that sends a Jewish-themed children’s book each month to more than 230,000 subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. More than 680,000 PJ Library books are delivered around the world in 29 countries and seven languages each month. All told, more than 41 million books have been distributed by PJ Library in the past 15 years, with 20 million in North America alone. 52

PJ Library is the brainchild of philanthropist Harold Grinspoon, who wants to assure a love for Jewish tradition is passed along to the next generation. What better way to do that than by providing Jewish children’s books so parents and children can snuggle together in their PJs with great bedtime stories? The books are always free to participants, a gift from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in partnership with

The program is committed to helping students and families build a foundation of knowledge and skills to live meaningful Jewish lives and embrace a passion for lifelong learning.
