Dear Church Family, I've been in the church business long enough to know that perfect churches, like perfect pastors, don't exist. So I am well aware that BUMC is not a perfect church. But after only three weeks, it's clear to me this is a great church. Let me share a few examples. Great People: I've already met a large number of intelligent, capable, creative and committed members of the congregation. God has gifted BUMC with a remarkable number of exceptional lay persons. Great Staff: Over the past few weeks, I've invested many hours into getting acquainted with our staff, and will continue to do so. So far I am extremely impressed with their competency and commitment. Clearly BUMC is blessed with a superb staff. Great Choirs: Last week I traveled to Indiana to hear a concert by our Sonshine Choir. Afterwards, one of the adult sponsors said, "So what do you think of our youth choir?" I said, "I'm totally blown away!" I'm equally impressed with the Chancel Choir who brings us rich depth and talent at our 11:00 service. And our Awakening Praise Band rocks! We are blessed to have these three diverse and talented choirs.
Great Ministries: Although I'm still learning about our various ministries, I'm deeply impressed with all this church is doing. From "in-house" programs like our children and youth ministries, to local ministries like Harvest Hands and Habitat for Humanity, to international ministries including our work in South Africa-BUMC is doing exciting kingdom work. Great Facilities: I'm still learning my way around the campus of BUMC and have gotten lost on many occasions! But God has given this church a remarkable physical plant. I don't know of a church anywhere who has better facilities. Great Possibilities: As wonderful as our church currently is-we have only begun to reach our potential. Given all the resources God has given this church, there is no limit to what we can accomplish in the future. I can't wait to see what God will do with us in the months and years ahead. However, I am not naïve. I know BUMC also faces challenges. For example, we need to shore up our fiscal resources. I learned last week that we are behind on our operating budget, and we are behind on paying our apportionments (which fund UMC ministries in TN and around the world). I know we can do better than that! I promise to do my part financially, and ask you to join me in doing your part. I’ve also learned that we need 28 more volunteers for our fall children’s Sunday School program, and hope many of your will rise to the occasion and participate in this crucial ministry. We face numerous other challenges that I don't have time to develop in today's e-note. But even with the challenges, I am overwhelmingly optimistic about the future of this great church! I hope to see you Sunday. My sermon will be called, "God's Message for Brentwood United Methodist Church." In Christ’s Love and Service, Martin
