Missions & Outreach For more info on all missions call David Ssebulime at 615-324-7222. February Focus: Health and Wellness Imagine No Malaria Malaria is caused by a parasite carried by mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites a person, the parasite enters the bloodstream and heads for the liver, where it multiplies. It then re-enters the bloodstream, attacking red blood cells. Typically, someone with malaria experiences a high fever, chills, joint pain and headaches. Left untreated, symptoms eventually advance to organ failure. Nearly 90 percent of malaria’s victims are children under the age of 5 and pregnant women. United Methodists are committed to a denominational goal of $75 million for Imagine No Malaria and have so far raised just over $64 million. Our Nashville Area goal is $1 million by June 2015. Next week stop by one of the tables in the Narthex, outside the Chapel, or near the reception desk to learn more about how you can help put an end to Malaria. Construction has Begun! The Hands of Christ hospital construction is underway in Honduras. Next week, Jon and Anna will be visiting us to update on how the build is going! International Mission Trips 2015 Each of our international mission trips has an aspect of health and wellness. Here are the dates for our 2015 trips: Haiti, October 15-20; Honduras, October 10-17; and Mexico, October 9-18. If you are considering being a part of one of our teams, please contact Rebekah Scott at rscott@bumc.net. More information coming soon! CARING MINISTRY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK Inclusivity Ministry This ministry seeks to ensure the BUMC is a place where all people have a home to follow Christ. The mission of this ministry is to provide care and support for those who are seeking to find and experience the love of Christ within a community of faith regardless of their sexual orientation, as well as provide resources for their family members and friends. Contact Rev. Erin Racine: 615-324-7244, eracine@bumc.net. Adoption Support The Adoption Support and Orphan/Foster Care Committee has a three-part focus of supporting families who are exploring and navigating the adoption process, encouraging BUMC foster families, and facilitating orphan care opportunities for our congregation. Our vision for our congregation is to embrace caring for God’s most vulnerable children in some way by serving the least of these. Contact Stephanie Walton at 615-243-5531 Domestic Abuse Domestic violence is not just about hitting. It can take many forms through the use of power and control. Abuse can look like coercion and threats, intimidation, isolation, minimizing or denying a partner’s feelings, and blaming the victim for abusive behavior. If you or a loved one are afraid of a partner’s temper, afraid to disagree, or avoid others because of a partner’s jealousy, confidential assistance is available through BUMC, Bridges Domestic Violence Center of Williamson County, or the YWCA Crisis Line. Helpful Contacts: Rev. Erin Racine, Pastor of Caring Ministries at BUMC: 615-373-3663, ext. 244; Caroline Beavers, LPC-MHSP at BUMC Counseling Center: 615-371-2550; Bridges Domestic Violence Center: 615-599-5777; YWCA Crisis Line: 615-242-1199
