Do You KNOW? What is Commissiong? What is Ordination? Who are Deacons & Elders? United Methodists have two orders of ordained clergy – deacons and elders. Deacons are persons who are called by God to lead the church in servant ministry. They teach and proclaim the Word, assist elders in administering the sacraments, form and nurture disciples, conduct marriages and bury the dead, and lead the congregation’s mission to the world. Elders are ordained to a lifetime ministry of Service, Word, Sacrament, and Order. They are authorized to preach and teach the Word of God, to administer the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion, and to order the life of the Church for mission and ministry. Commissioning is the first step to becoming ordained and begins a three-year period of ongoing education and training. Ordination marks the final step of preparation for both deacons and elders and both must meet educational requirements. (Excerpted from www.umc.org.)
