Dear Friends in Christ,

Dr. Davis Chappell

Some of you may know the name Mabel Mastin. Mabel passed away recently. She was known as a prayer warrior. If a friend had a need she was willing to intercede on their behalf. This was one of her gifts. A mutual friend shared a story about Mabel that bears repeating.

"I am sure there are many stories, but one in particular has come to mind since her death. After we left home, I tried to to keep in contact with Mabel from time to time by cards, letters and phone calls. Sometimes she even checked on me by a phone call. Once she told me that she had become so discouraged by her poor eyesight. She had tried to call me and dialed a wrong number. Typical of Mabel, she began asking the "wrong number" if he was a person of faith, and about his life. She had a long conversation with "wrong number" and gave him a lot of encouragement, which she said seemed to change his tone and attitude as they talked. He thanked her for the call. It was then she said that she realized God could even use her poor eyesight for His purpose." Mabel's example is a reminder to me that God doesn't simply use our gifts and graces. God uses our weaknesses and "wrong numbers" for His benefit. More and more I'm discovering that God is in the detours of our lives. Indeed, those detours often become thoroughfares through which we experience epiphany. Finally, it was good to welcome new members George and Doris Benton, James, Schaundra, Abby, Ben, and Maggie Walton, also Kevin, Rebecca, Stephanie, Ellie, Chelsea, and Emily Brandon. Welcome to our church community.

I look forward to seeing you in worship this weekend. The peace of Christ be with you all!

Davis
