Jukebox the Ghost Headlines Main Stage on Friday Night at Ann Arbor’s South University Art Fair Jukebox the Ghost Ben Thornewill (pianos, vocals); Tommy Siegel (guitar, vocals); Jesse Kristin (drums) Bolstered by an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, an appearance at Lollapalooza, and extended opening tours with Ben Folds, Guster, Adam Green and Jack's Mannequin, the band has acquired an incredibly loyal fan-base since the release of 2008's Let Live and Let Ghosts. Over the years, Jukebox the Ghost has maintained a tour schedule that most bands would balk at, playing over 150 shows a year and becoming a well-oiled, high energy live band. This summer, the band embarks on their biggest headline tour to date after performing at Bonnaroo on the album's release weekend. Their Bowery Ballroom show in June has already sold out two months in advance. Michigan fans can see them perform on the Main Stage at Ann Arbor's South University Art Fair on Friday July 20, at 8:00pm. Jukebox the Ghost's third album Safe Travels marks a period in the band's career that's steeped in change, both personally and professionally. "It felt like the music was finally growing with us.” Safe Travels, at its core, represents three people going through universal life changes — a way of coping with how quickly things can turn around, for good and bad. And though it's clear their sound and outlook have matured to addressing some darker subject material, their brand of upbeat pop still remains intact.

EMERGING ARTISTS Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair Arts League of Michigan Visit the Art League’s State Street booth, presented by the Bank of Ann Arbor, for a look at the prized work of the student artists in their Artist Mentorship Program. In this class, the student “lives” the life of an artist by exploring and pushing the limits of their creativity. The core of the program is five-weeks of individualized instruction in the visual arts. It includes strengthening art skills and being the artist by writing artist’s statements and judging the work of peers. Students also learn about the practical business side of art – how to present works, framing, labeling and the “art” of the sale. The Arts League of Michigan promotes, preserves and develops African and African American cultural arts within our multi-cultural community.

Ann Arbor’s South University Art Fair This year the South University Art Fair devotes an entire section to new and up-and-coming local artists. Located on North Church, these 12 artists are not to be missed. See page 34 for listings. >>>>more on next page

FEATURED ARTISTS MARINA TERAUDS North Branch, MI | marinaterauds.com The Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair Printmaking / Booth D222

“I was born in Russia, Siberia near Baikal Lake. My first memories: snow, long dark cold winters, snow, stars, snow, frozen milk, snow again, and then very hot, short bright summers and huge yellow and orange wildflowers—fields full of them. Since then I don't like snow. I love starry skies, constellations and orange-yellow color.” “Drawing is very important to me; it is a base for my intaglio prints. Intaglio is a technique of deep printing (like embossing with ink), and there are many ways to make an image on metal: etching, aquatint, dry point, mezzotint and engraving. I use all these techniques and often combine them in one piece. The content of my compositions comes equally from drawing from nature and my imagination, and my main themes are nature and fantasy with elements of symbolism and surrealism.”

JENNIFER ARDOLINO Crystal River, FL | www.jaart.com State Street Area Art Fair Painting / Booth B301

Jennifer Ardolino sees art in many things and has a magical way of transforming what she sees into vivid, wonderfully colored images that transport the viewer into the scenes. The rich palette of the tropics and the beauty of nature have provided Jennifer with an endless variety of vibrant subjects. Her chosen media extend from the supple natural beauty of watercolors to the strong vivid colors of acrylics. A Native of South Florida, Jennifer's painting has always reflected her surroundings. Ranging from the vividly colored tropical manicured landscapes of South Florida where she grew up, to the wild unspoiled natural beauty of a remote island preserve where she now lives, to the Tropical Caribbean where she has sailed to and visited many times.

JULIE BEYER Dayton, OH | www.juliebeyer.com Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, the Original Mixed Media / Booth A239 Somewhere between loads of laundry and running kids to baseball practice, Julie picked up a paintbrush. She was determined to paint something to fill a blank wall in her house. A local art buyer saw the piece and began commissioning Julie's work for her clients. Since then, Julie has been creating award-winning artwork that can be seen in private and corporate collections across the country. Her mixed-media paintings include bits and pieces of her children's artwork, vintage fabrics, old photos, and other things she has been collecting over the years. She has long been influenced by the colorful, happy artwork children create. Julie has a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Cincinnati. She taught first grade and worked at the Children's Defense Fund in Washington, DC, before becoming a stay-at-home mom of four children. She is now happily painting from her laundry room studio in Dayton, Ohio.

SANDI GARRIS State College, PA | www.sandigarris.com Ann Arbor’s South University Art Fair Fabric / Booth E94 Mixing exclusively red, yellow and blue MX dyes, Sandi creates hundreds of hues and shades of vibrant fabrics to use in her primitive, graphic artwork. Intriguing colors, fine stitch work, and impeccable finishing, with all fabric edges turned under, make her fiber art pieces truly unique. A scuba diver and world traveler, Sandi finds inspiration in exotic cultures and repetitive natural patterns. Her close-up photography of rich coral reefs and lush rain forests capture creative ideas. She mentally creates her graphic designs over weeks or months before fabric is ever touched. When she sees the design completely with pattern, color and balance, she cuts and sews thousands of pieces to create the image. Illustrative designs such as "It Takes a Village" require days of pencil sketching, which she then cuts apart for pattern pieces. Her artwork is primitive and organic, which reflects her multicultural view of the world. Art Showcase Magazine / www.ArtShowcaseMagazine.com
