Attendance at the car shows and cruise-in’s have been great. Lots of cars/trucks/bikes out on the road cruisin’ on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. One important point I’d like you to remember… while the vehicle next to you is checking out your ride, are they watching where they are going? Are You? Driving safely is more important today than ever before. Cell phones distract drivers, and as everyone knows speeding has consequents that far exceed a speeding ticket. What if you can’t stop in time. Just remember it’s not just you who looses when you are involved in an accident. On a lighter note we welcome Stefanie Lea to the Gulf Coast MotorSports team. You may have met her during the Atomic Blast while she was interviewing car owners and taking photos… she’s the real deal folks, a true hot rod girl.. Read her bio on the next page. Jimbo, The Atomic Blast; The amount this show has grown from the first one until now is pretty amazing. A lot starts at the top with the decision makers that host/promote/ and ‘mc’ this event but definitely includes the participants that put on a he** of a fantastic event. Posting and sharing with our friends, so many to tag, Frenchie and Susan, Robert and the Alabama gang, several from Florida, one crazy Texas nut yea that’s you Dennis, and whole Bayou of Cajuns from Destri, the list goes on. There's a couple wives to thank also they let most of us husbands act like nuts. If you have never been, try it once and I bet you'll become hooked. It almost can't be totally explained. It's your childhood up to your adulthood rolled into a two day event. The hospitality, friendships and family you meet here is second to none. There's Drag Racing, Burnout/Donut competition, pinup girls, flamethrowing, lots of swap meet stuff and mini bike events the kids (and kids at heart love this one). The list of characters (participants) you'll just have to meet yourself. They'll be more than happy to meet you. So mark this down as one of your must make it to events. Al Cole PS: This was one wild ass great event that needs it's own story. Whether you want credit or not, this is one great event. I seriously hope that the winter classic/hotrod and camper/peace love festival get just as popular. Thanks Al, as you know we almost didn’t have the event because of the rain the first part of March. The decision was made to hold it later that month and the only way to let everyone know was thru social media. I want to thank all of you who posted the rescheduled event on Facebook and e-mails to make the 5th Atomic Blast the event it has become. Over 2,000 people came to the show and by all accounts everyone had a good time and that’s what it is all about. A special thanks goes out to “Crab” Landry family & friends who bring a true Cajun party to Gulfport Dragway. ……… jimbo

How you start the day determines what kind of day you're going to have. When you wake up in the morning, it's easy to lie in bed thinking negative thoughts. You don't realize it, but those thoughts can set the tone for a lousy day. …… Joel Osteen

Jimbo, The HeMan Woman Haters and Rebel Queen's Yes Dear No Dear Clubs handed Tiffany Denise Bell and Women's Resource Center a donation of over $2500.00 cash and thousands of dollars in supplies after the 1st Annual Yes Dear No Dear Clubs Mothers Day Weekend Charity Drive. Job WELL done group, it was an amazing day. Things went smoothly, we had fun with each other, we did a good thing. On the Cover... My grandmother, Susie Belle Nunley Green, had a car like this one shown on the board in the trunk. Her's was a navy blue color, and I'm not quite sure what year. Her's was not customized as this one is of course!! I came upon this car at the 2016 NSRA Street Rod Nationals South, in Knoxville, TN, and it stopped me dead in my tracks!! The tags have, "My Suzie", on them!! I loved riding in the car with my Mammaw!! She drove fast and gave me butterflies in my stomach. Love and miss her so!! ‌. Tena Stamper Parks

Stefanie Lea I was raised in a small town north of Biringham Alabama. (Pinson, Alabama) My bedroom was over the basement of my house. I could always hear the music of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Pasty Cline seeping through my bedroom floors. The smells of burning metal, gasoline and exhaust fumes seemed to follow the tunes. As a child I was raised around every kind of car you can imagine. In the early years we had race cars, and every Saturday night we would load up dads latest race car creation and head to the local dirt track. While driving we would sing along to some Johnny Cash from the trucks 8 track player. As the years went by my love for fast cars and music grew into my passion as well. I just turned up the volume a little bit. Music from the likes of the Ramones, Cheap Trick, Van Halen and of course some Metallica. By 16 I knew more about cars then the most grown men. Our home had become the hang out for all my high school garage mechanics and greasers alike. As a teenager all my friends would come over and learn from my dad how to lower their trucks and work on them as needed. Then go back to school and teach the auto mechanics teacher a thing or two. Now as a adult music, cars and good friends just go hand-in-hand for me. My love of Hot Rods, Rat Rods, Muscle cars and race cars mixed in with all things Rock-a-billy, Punk-a-billy and just good ol’ Rock & Roll music keeps the smiles on my face, and is true to who I am. I go from car shows to music festivals now searching for what I have known my whole life. Good people, Unique vehicles and loud music! Watch for my July column covering the Nashville Boogie

A few pictures from the luncheon and cruise-in at Boyington Heath and Rehab center. Great weather and the residents loved to see and talk about the cars. The staff had everything running smoothly and did an excellent job. We had quite a few conversations with some residents that were offering $600 and $800 for our cars. Fun was had by all and we are looking forward to seeing y'all again during Cruising the Coast week. Thanks for having us.

Shouting out a big thank you to all our cruiser friends. Our Residents did have a great time. They will be talking about the cars/trucks for weeks. We all love seeing those beautiful cars and trucks, but also enjoy the company of such awesome people. We are so Blessed to have friends like yourselves. Until we meet again. Keep on Cruizin. Sincerely, The Boyington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Darlene Currie, Life Enrichment Director.

I made it through another Atomic Blast. Had a good time both days. I met up with some of the Misfit car club at the Blast on Friday. Now for some reason food just taste better out in the open. There is nothing like a fried baloney sandwich with mayonnaise. As a kid a fried baloney sandwich was one of the best you could get mom to make and I still eat them today. The best is a slice of baloney about 1/4 thick and if you have a slice of sweet onion and fresh garden tomato, what else do you want? For some reason baloney just doesn't get old like eating some other sandwich meats. On the 14 of May the family went to New Orleans for the day. Now if you want a good po-boy go to Mahony's at 3454 Magazine Street. We always get the Root Beer Ham and cheese. The ham is cooked in Barqs Root beer. Most people cook ham with pineapple or a honey glaze. The root beer adds that sweet taste that you get with other glazes but just enough of the root beer flavor to tell it is root beer. After lunch my son wanted to go get some beignets down at Cafe Du Monde. So then we had to go walk off all of the food, because we had planned supper at P F Chang's over at lakeside shopping center. We spent the day enjoying eating. It's good thing that this only happens about once a year. Till we eat again. J. R.

Ford Mustang Car For A Whole Generation

Happy Motoring! Janine Reulecke www.collectorscarworld.de www.vintagestyle.eu No American car of the postwar era has had a more powerful influence on automotive culture than the Ford Mustang. While there isn’t a definitive agreement on how to sort out the various redesigns, we can offer this general guide to the major makeovers. The original 1965-73 The 1965 Mustang wowed crowds at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York with a crisp, captivating design that promised fun even on a drive to the supermarket. Prices started at $2,368 but often finished higher, as buyers personalized their hardtop coupes, fastbacks and convertibles with a wide array of available performance, comfort and appearance upgrades. More than half chose one of the optional 289cubic-inch V-8s, which included a 271-horsepower “K-code” High Performance version that cost $435. The popular GT package added a tweaked suspension and sporty styling touches. Before Shelby’s GT-350 arrived, Mustangs took first and second in the Touring Class of the 1964 Tour de France Auto, a start to earning its international competition cred. Even the earliest cars were officially 1965 models; the 64½ tag was coined later by Mustang buffs to classify models built before cosmetic and mechanical upgrades, including the change from a generator to an alternator, were made. After minor revisions for 1966, Ford bulked up the Mustang’s look for ’67 and added big-block V8s, including the 428 Cobra Jet in 1968. Growing again for 1969-70, the Mustang offered more muscle choices. The Mach 1, looking musclebound for glory with stripes and scoops, had a new 351 small block or optional 428 CJ. The Boss 302

was Ford’s reply to the Camaro Z/28, and the limited-production Boss 429 homologated Ford’s semi-hemi 429 for NASCAR. Eight inches longer, six inches wider and 600 pounds heavier than the ’65 Mustang, the ’71 was too big not to fail. The fastback was more of a flat-back with nearly zero rear visibility. Performance remained hot with the Boss 351 and 429 Cobra Jet, but both departed after ’71, leaving 351-ci “Cleveland” variants to preserve fun. 1974-78 Mustang II The Pinto-based 1974 Mustang II gets little respect, but Ford had correctly anticipated the shift to smaller, more economical sporty coupes. The fastback was a practical hatchback, and T-tops replaced the convertible. Options included the V6 from Ford’s German operation, and the 302 V-8, albeit in weak 133-hp tune. Decal-festooned Cobra II and King Cobra models offered no performance gains. 1979-93 Based on the new Fox platform that would underpin many Ford products through the 1980s, the ’79 Mustang was bigger and roomier than the Mustang II. The angular Euro-influenced Fox didn’t look Mustang-ish, but it did revive the convertible. Performance made a huge comeback with “5.0 liter” models that attracted a new generation of fans. The 1984-86 SVO was a critically admired, but slow-selling, turbo-4. 1994-2004 A revamped chassis, the Fox 4, wore a rounded, fastback-style body for 1994, and Ford’s OHC Modular V8 replaced the old pushrod 302 for 1996. SVT Cobras eventually reached 390 hp with a supercharged DOHC V-8; Cobra Rs were stripped-down street legal racers. A reskin for 1999 brought “New Edge” styling. Special editions included the 2001 Bullitt and 2003-4 Mach 1. 2005-14 The 2005 Mustang joined the model’s first all-new chassis in a quartercentury with a retro design inspired by the late-’60s fastbacks, and later facelifts amplified the nostalgia. The GT’s 4.6-liter V-8 peaked at 315 hp but would give way

to a new “5.0” for 2011, the 412 hp twin-cam Coyote. A 305-horse V-6 was the new base engine. Instant collectible: the 2012-13 Boss 302. 2015-present A smoother, more cohesive blend of modern and heritage design cues, independent rear suspension and world-class overall performance add up to the best Mustang ever. A new turbo 2.3-liter fourcylinder atones for the sins of 1980s Mustang turbos, but V8s still rule: the GT is powered by a 435-hp 5.0-liter and the Shelby GT350 gets a 526hp 5.2-liter.

Scotty Barfield 9/20/50 – 4/24/16

By: Terry

Mason Barfield

Sunday April 24, 2016 started out like any other day, except I was by myself, which I do not enjoy. Our son Jason and his wife Michelle had gone to Ft Worth, TX to visit Michelle’s father. Scotty had volunteered us to take care of their Schnauzer, Brody. We had been taking care of Brody since the weekend, when on Tuesday he tore up two sets of window blinds while we were on a shopping trip. We decided Brody had to go home. Scotty said I’ll work, come home, we’ll eat and then I’ll ride up to Jason and Michelle’s house, spend the night and take care of him. That was her routine each day. It was only a few more days until the weekend and Jason and Michelle would be home. Saturday afternoon Scotty came home, she had our 16 year old granddaughter Kaley with her. She started catching up on things she hadn’t done during the week around the house. Kaley had already called me about wanting to go to the cruise-in that night. When it came time to get ready, Scotty said she would stay and catch up on cleaning the house that she had not been able to do during the week, Scotty said “you two go, have fun and I’ll have everything ready when you get home.” Upon arriving back home, she had everything done, house cleaned, clothes washed, groceries bought. We talked and stuff, don’t remember about what, just normal stuff, Scotty and Kaley took off for the last night away. Scotty and I had, for the 34 years we had been together, always parted company in person or on the phone with four words…”bye, I love you”, we knew each time we left each other’s company it could be the last time we saw each other, so we always said it, agreed to say it from the start.

Sunday morning I was bored being alone; so I slept late, not wanting to go to church by myself. Got up made coffee and piddled around. I always tape the NASCAR race, so I started watching the broadcast. The front door was cracked a little to allow our Yorkie to get fresh air on the screened-in porch. About that time I noticed someone had walked into the porch and I see it’s a policeman. My heart sank, seeing a policeman at your door is never a good thing. He asked if this was the Barfield residence and I said yes, already shaking. The policeman stated there had been an accident and I needed to get to Garden Park Hospital, there was a minor child that needed to be picked up. I asked what about my wife, the policeman stated that was all he knew. I started getting ready as fast as I could, shaking, fear and unbelief totally engulfing me. I called Scotty’s cell phone… voicemail.

10

JUNE 2016

In route to the hospital I got a phone call, they had obviously gotten my number from Scotty’s phone because we had our numbers labeled for emergency… husband’s cell phone had come up on Scotty’s phone. They called my cell from a number I didn’t recognize and wanted to make sure I was on the way, still wouldn’t tell me anything. When I arrived at the hospital, all the family was there, I had the farthest to drive, so I was the last. Everyone was upset, but no one had told them anything either. I found out that Scotty had taken Kaley home and picked up our one and a half year old great grandbaby Zayne. Kristian, Zayne’s mother also had no idea how Zayne was and they wouldn’t let her go back to see him. The nurses came out and told us the doctor wanted to talk with us in the chapel. That made it worse. This all was so unreal, I was in such shock, fear, unbelief, the whole thing seemed like an unreal nightmare. After we had waited a while in the chapel, Kristian came in with Zayne; he was so perfect it took me a couple of seconds to realize who Kristian was holding. Zayne had one little small cut above one eye and some small scratches on his legs. When Zayne was given a bath after they got him home, there was so much glass in the tub it looked like glitter. The leg scratches were gone the next day and the small cut on the forehead was completely healed in a few days with no scab. Zayne was in the right front passenger seat of the 1965 Ford Mustang coupe in a child seat. The only part of the car’s interior left intact. It was a miracle he came through the accident so well. The doctor finally came into the chapel and the world stopped. I was hoping and praying for word that she was in bad shape, but there was a chance, I would have taken any chance at all at that point. The doctor explained the accident was bad, Scotty was unresponsive at the scene. (I found out later that medical people, good Samaritans, had worked on her until the ambulance arrived. Also Christians had stopped and formed a circle around Scotty praying for her during this time. Thank you if you were in that circle.) They had worked on her at the scene, on the ride in the ambulance and the doctor stated he had worked on her there at the ER, but they had been unsuccessful and she had passed away. Wow! Worst moment in my life, two weeks later on Sunday as I’m writing this column, I still cannot believe it happened and that Scotty is gone! Scotty and I met because of a radio contest give away, she called the radio station on a dare from the girls she worked with. She won an album on my radio show which qualified her to win the grand prize of an evening with a country music artist. I thought on the phone she was a famine guy, called her him, “Scotty has won himself an album…” thought it was kind of funny and went on about doing my show. Later I was over in the office building next door getting coffee when I saw this beautiful girl at the front desk picking up her album. I heard her say, “I just wanted to show y’all I wasn’t a boy!” It hit me who she was, so I slipped back out to the studio. Scotty won the grand prize drawing later that week on the morning show on Friday morning. It my job to pick up the limo from a local car dealer, pick up the contest winner and bring them to the dinner at the Holiday Inn. The limo was not really a limo but a very nice Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. When I picked the Rolls up, the guy at the dealership said it had a small problem, it would diesel on you. I had no idea what that meant, I was young and stupid. He said just put it in drive and switch it off. (What he meant was run-on. When you switch a car off and it wants to sputter and knock and keep running) I drove the car away to pick up my date for the night. I picked up this pretty girl I had met at a club a few nights before, we were on our first date and we are cruising around in the Rolls. She is a real looker and I’m on the make, it’s going to be a great night. We run low on fuel, so I start thinking about what kind of fuel this exotic car burns. Then it hit me. The guy said diesel, so I fill it up with diesel. I’m young, stupid as I stated, distracted by the car, the pretty girl and the night coming up. We get just a short distance from the gas station and black smoke starts boiling out of the tail pipes. We are stranded on the side of the road in the middle of summer. Finally we get a wrecker to come get us (no cell phones back then) and we are towed back to a service station. By this time… my date’s makeup is all over the side of the road and she is mad. We get the Rolls fixed and get to the dinner late. The contest winner, Scotty, had to be picked up by

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

the sheriff’s car that was supposed to escort us. Everyone at the dinner had already heard the story, so I’m getting razed a bit by everyone and my date isn’t talking to me, the makeup and the sweating I guess…she’s on my left side at the dinner, Scotty is sitting to my right, so I talk with Scotty instead of my date… and the rest is history. If I had not put the diesel in the Rolls, I would not have met Scotty and we would not have been married thirty-three and a half years. Scotty and I were as different as night and day. I was outgoing, loved adventure and the spotlight; she was more reserved, a bit naive and cautious. I took Scotty all kind of adventures, we went scuba diving in caves, twenty miles out in the Gulf, one hundred ten feet down. We hiked the mountains, we started a BMX bike track, we rode bicycles, we each had motorcycles and went on trips riding them. We had horses and cared for them for 13 years. We were always together. I announced stock cars for thirty years; she went with me and loved when I did four weekends over two years at Talladega. We went to see many, many concerts over the years and she was backstage right beside me. We were together 34 years, married 33 ½ years. I can’t remember life without Scotty. She was the yin to my yang and there is an enormous hole left in my life with her parting, she was my best friend. We lost a daughter in 1990 to cancer at the age of 16. So I know Scotty and Jennifer are back together, also with both our mothers and fathers in heaven. I worked my first car show just two weeks after the wreck, it was tough…we had enjoyed our little vacations traveling to car shows, it was just me and our dog Maxie on this trip and it was tough. The loneness is overwhelming. Burning Up The Beaches was good therapy for me and we’ll cover that incredible show right here next month. I finally watched the WLOX news story today about the accident, I had recorded it on the DVR and I saw the 1965 Mustang she was driving and the accident scene for the first time…oh my God! I just wanted to share Scotty with you this month, I told a Sun Herald reporter that wrote the “Silent Hero” story on Scotty for the newspaper…everyone loved Scotty and tolerated me. Scotty always wanted to make decisions with her big heart, we had so many great memories together and we lived life to its fullest. Thank you for all the support from our church, family, friends and car guys! I could not have made it through this without all the prayers and support. Being on the receiving end of so many prayers is simply amazing! Hug your loved ones daily and let the last four words you say to each other every time you leave their side be…”Bye I Love You!” You never know when a policeman will show up at your door! I love you Scotty…and I always will! til next month…

Tips & Advice

12.

Test Drive Strategies Posted by CarSoup.com Editors on Feb 1, 2016 Getting behind the wheel of a prospective new or used vehicle is the most critical step in the car buying process. Fortunately, with a little preparation you can stay on task and focused on the really important things. Most people make a list before taking a trip to the grocery store. Doing the same before embarking on your quest for a big-ticket item like a car or truck makes a ton of sense. Here are some basics to help you get the most from your test drive. New vehicles — Prepare! Assuming you’ve settled on the basic make and model you’re interested in, list the trade-offs you’ll be willing to make. For example, note the colors you’re willing to accept from your ideal choice to what you could live with if necessary. Do the same for options and features — from “must haves” to “negotiables.” 1.

Identify the dealers in your area that sell the make and model you’re interested in. Give them a call and connect with the new car manager. Describe the vehicle you’re looking for and make sure they have it on the lot. Ask the manager for the name of his best salesperson and make an appointment. 2. When you get to the dealership, remember you’re the boss. Think of the salesperson as someone who’s working for you. Expect the salesperson’s full attention and their complete knowledge of every aspect of the vehicle you’re interested in. Anything short of that, don’t hesitate to fire him/her and move on. 3. It’s likely the salesperson will ask if you have a trade-in. It’s a reasonable question but the best way to answer is to say you haven’t made that decision yet. Some dealerships will ask to evaluate your trade-in while you’re on your test-drive. Decline that offer, too. Remember, you’re the boss. 4. Always aim to test-drive a version of the vehicle that is as close to what you want as possible. There’s little point in driving a vehicle with a V-6 if what you want is the more economical four-cylinder engine or driving a sedan if you’re really interested in the hatchback version. 5. Before you take it for a spin have the salesperson demonstrate the vehicle’s features and functions. Review everything right down to the cup holders. Check under the hood and ask the salesperson to point out some of the basics like the location of the oil dipstick and where oil is added. Check for things like battery accessibility and locate the spare (full size or donut?) and jack. Check out the configuration of the trunk/cargo space to make sure it’s adequate for your needs. 6. Insurance rules will usually require that the salesperson accompany you on the test drive. Ask the salesperson to drive for a bit to give you opportunity to check out the back seat. Your future passengers will appreciate it. 7. As you get behind the wheel evaluate entering and exiting the vehicle to make sure you can get in and out comfortably. Check your seating position to make sure you can easily reach the steering wheel, pedals and all controls. 8. When you get on the road, make sure to test the car in situations and environments that best represent your typical driving conditions, stop-and-go, freeway, hills, etc. A good salesperson will know of nearby routes to take that will best simulate your real-life conditions. Take your time and be thorough. 9. As you drive listen carefully for road and ambient noise from wind and tire hum. There will always be some noise but if it seems excessive when the vehicle is brand new and as tight as it will ever be consider that over time the noise will only increase. 10. Really concentrate on the ride. Is it smooth? Does the suspension absorb bumps without difficulty? Again, if you have concerns at the outset, remember that the ride will tend to deteriorate somewhat over time. 11. Visibility is a huge deal. Check your field of vision. Look for any distracting reflections and pay close attention to any potential blind spots, especially as you look left and right to make lane changes.

12

JUNE 2016

Make sure the vehicle has adequate acceleration. Does it have enough spunk to safely merge into freeway traffic and to pass other vehicles at speed? Note the feel of the transmission as it upshifts and downshifts. For manual transmissions make sure the shift pattern feels smooth and comfortable and the clutch operates to your satisfaction. Check for steering responsiveness and stability when cornering. 13. When possible, find a safe place to brake hard from 40-50 mph and look for a controlled, straight-line stop. 14. If you regularly parallel park and provided the vehicle doesn’t park itself, make sure you’re comfortable doing it. When the test drive is over you may want to take some time to process all you’ve learned. If you’re not quite ready to buy, simply say so. If you’ve had a good experience with the salesperson and return later to negotiate make it a point to complete the transaction make it a point to do it with the salesperson who has already invested his or her time with you. Used Vehicles — Test-driving a used vehicle will involve many of the same steps associated with buying a new vehicle, especially when buying from a dealer. There are, however, a few additional considerations when dealing with pre-owned vehicles. 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

6.

7.

8. 9.

Ask for the maintenance records. Most responsible vehicle owners will keep them. If they’re not available it’s a big, red flag Get a vehicle history report. It’s worth every penny and then some. Vehicle reports are available from a number of reputable resources. Learn more here. Make no assumptions about what works and what doesn’t. Check the AC and heater, headlights and tail lights, wipers, etc., and make sure all power options are in good working order. Make sure the spare tire and all tire changing gear are present and functional. Be more concerned about identifying potential problems and less concerned about diagnosing them. Squeaks, clunks and rattles may or may not indicate actual problems. More on this later. Carefully check the tires for proper inflation and possible uneven wear. Evaluate the tread depth to see how much life is left. One easy way is the penny test. Simply insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is less than 2/32 inch and it’s time to replace them. 3/32 inch means they’ll need to be replaced soon. 4/32 of an inch or more means they’re good to go for a while. Do a full walk around to check for dings, dents, windshield chips or cracks. Most used cars will have some but if they’re excessive it may indicate that the car has been driven in less than ideal conditions. Turn the key. Obvious, right? Not so fast. We’re interested in how the key actually turns and how much effort it takes to insert and remove it. Some people have heavy rings loaded with keys and other stuff. Over time this can put excessive wear on the ignition and cause problems. Also, make sure there’s an extra set and/or a valet key. They’re expensive to replace. Give it the sniff test. Remove any air fresheners before you start your test drive and check later for any unusual or offensive odors because chances are they’re not going away. Last, but certainly not least, never buy a used vehicle that hasn’t been independently inspected. It will cost you a bit to have a trusted mechanic (with no skin in the game) give the vehicle a once-over but it could save you thousands of dollars and lots of headaches down the road. Make a note of any issues, concerns, noises, etc., but leave the evaluation to an expert. Most dealerships will do at least a cursory inspection and often offer some kind of warranty. Certified used vehicles are usually a safe bet. Vehicles sold “as is” by dealers or by a private party aren’t. If you’re really interested in the vehicle make the investment and get it checked out

PARALLEL PASSIONS This past winter while attending a large indoor car show in the Midwest, I noticed a huge swap meet was being held across the parking lot of the same venue but the two events were not connected. So naturally I had to check it out and I came across a treasure that now resides in my home office in California. It was too large to bring home with me so it traveled back to Minnesota and arrived from the vendor three weeks later. The short version is that it’s a fully functional cutaway car chassis built as an instructional aid in Germany around 1961. From the spark plugs firing sequentially to the valves and pistons working in concert, visible through the only clear plastic part, the engine, to the fully functional clutch, three-speed transmission and rear differential, to the four wheel brakes, including emergency brake, and high/low beam headlights, taillights, brake, turn and license plate light, all the metal parts are cutaway to expose their operation. At about 3-feet long and 90 pounds, an electric motor puts it all in action. That was a cool find for something I’m very passionate about, automobiles, but it also got me to thinking how the antique and rodding communities share passion and gather together to experience that passion like no other group of enthusiasts in the world. Within the two groups of enthusiasts you find amateurs and professionals that share a wide variety of knowledge, talent and level of involvement. Anybody can find enjoyment in either hobby (yes, hobby) because another uniqueness is that none of the physical pieces in either community are necessary, rather they come about

by a special sort of desire to participate. What is common is the fact that the folks that come together in either of these activities are some of the best people in the world. Honest, friendly, knowledgeable, talented and they get immense enjoyment from sharing with other like-minded enthusiasts are just some of the ways we are all alike. Combined, the antique and rodding worlds come together thousands of times all year long at large and small events, club activities and travels to and from. It doesn’t matter the level of participation, it’s the same for everyone. The lady that finds that perfect knick knack is just as excited as the guy that finds a rare painting or cutaway chassis! A rodder that attends an event can park his or her low-budget, homebuilt car next to a million dollar effort and the owners, possibly from very diverse lifestyles, will instantly become friends. Others may argue that sports fans share these same passions, but there is one very big difference, they are just fans and only a lucky few get to participate. Others will say they do participate in their local softball team and that gives them the opportunity to enjoy the same skills as the pros, but I would argue, not on the same playing field. No other groups of passionate people come together as often as those that follow the antique or rodding community in all parts of the world. The lack of rules puts these two interests in a category of their own. As the rodding season begins for 2016 keep in mind the associations and clubs behind the events you attend are the ones responsible for providing these gatherings, whether the events are large or small, indoor or outdoor. Events are the lifeblood of the rodding community so when you attend one take the time to thank the producers and sponsors for all the behind-thescenes work involved so you can gather with several hundred or sometimes thousands of like -minded enthusiasts. We are all involved in something very special. Tom Vogele tomvogele@verizon.net

STREET ROD NATIONAL SOUTH, 2016 May 6, 7, & 8th was the 42nd Annual Street Rod National South show held in Knoxville, TN. The NSRA event was held at the Chilhowee Park and Expo Center. This facility is an 81-acre with many pavilions, a bandstand, amphitheater, and a 57,100 sq. ft. exhibition hall. There is a large lake with tiers and it was really something to see with all the cars and trucks decorating the landscape. This is the 33rd year that this NSRA event has been held at Chilhowee and almost all of the park is used. I worked the Beaman Gate on Friday morning, which was the opening day of the event. It was cool and the weather was perfect for a car show. When the gates opened and the all the beautiful cars started rolling in, it was great to see all the smiles on the cruisers' faces. Everyone was eager to get started enjoying the show. The swap meet was held in the outside pavilions and they were overflowing with car parts, car bodies, accessories and what I like to call 'good junk.' The bottom floor of the Expo Center was filled with vendors offering new parts and the second floor was home to Women's World where there was lots of 'bling bling' jewelry, candles, clothes and on and on. There was lots to see for the lady shoppers and those who love the ladies! My friend and fellow Misfit Crusier, Rich Marvil, said it best, “After 10 times, I quit counting how many trips we took there.” Outside there were lots of 18-wheelers housing speed shop vendors and equipment manufacturers selling hot rod & classic car parts and accessories. On Saturday, the park was filled with spectators and cruisers enjoying the music, the cars and the camaraderie. By mid-morning, the smell of onions, peppers and barbecue cooking had everyone ready for lunch. There was plenty of good food to choose from! And, of course, I went on a trek to find my ice cream, but it was worth the effort. There are lots of hills and by the end of the day, my legs were as tight as rubber bands! At each National NSRA event, a State NSRA Representative or Advisor is teamed up with an NSRA Safety Inspector and tasked with finding a car that they feel is a Top Pick. We call this the 'Rep Safety Pick' and this year it took place on Saturday. I was paired up with Ron Drum, an Inspector from Michigan. We did lots of walking and looking at a lot of cars and it was a hard decision. Out of the 1881 registered cars, we chose a black '56 Chevy Station Wagon that we felt best met the criteria of excellence in construction, design and safety of the vehicle. It was owned by Jack & Jessie Claxton of Kalamazoo, Michigan. They did all the construction of this car and Jessie said they love going to car shows all over the US. They do not own a car trailer; they believe in driving and said, “That's the real fun of cruising.” They have been NSRA members for more than 25 years and this is the first time they've been picked for this honor. They were so excited to chosen as one of the circle of Rep Safety Picks and also to receive an award! Saturday evening, I worked the NSRA booth with National Field Director, Charlie Bryson, Southeast Division Director, Will Seibel, and NSRA Representative, Bill Davidson. It's so much fun to talk with all the cruisers coming by and, of course, I love signing up new members! Eleven of our friends from the Gulf Coast and north Alabama joined us in Knoxville and were nine were fellow Misfits Cruisers (our car club on the Gulf Coast). I asked a few of them to write about their first experience in Knoxville: Linda & Bobby Gavagnie: Linda and I stopped in Knoxville on Friday at the NSRA South Street Rod Nationals. This was our first time to attend a National NSRA event. The organization and smoothness with which this event ran was impressive. On our arrival, we met up with fellow Misfits club members. There were around 2000 cars entered, vendors from most specialty & street rod equipment manufacturers and a large swap meet with many hard-to-find items. The participants were very friendly and answered all the questions asked about their vehicles with a smile. The manufacturer reps were helpful and also answered all inquiries and questions. The caliber of the vehicles at this event was second to none. They had everything from your everyday street rod to six-figure cars. We enjoyed our day in Knoxville and can't wait for the NSRA Street Rod National in Louisville, KY in August. Our reservations are made – see you there! Rich & Vikki Marvil: Just a few words on how much we enjoyed our trip to Knoxville. The ride up was a little long, but the scenery was spectacular. When we arrived at the show, we rented two scooters for two days and, boy, am I glad we did! It sure helped this old man's legs. Once Vikki got the hang of it, she did great. We saw some of the most beautiful cars we have ever seen. The vendors inside and out had some great deals. Got some good stuff for the '41 and Vikki loves her new grille. And let's not leave out Women's World! After 10 times, I quit counting how many trips we took there. The food was also great. We met some old friends there and also some new. Had a LARGE time!

Bill Leonhardt: The NSRA is not an organization of car lovers, It is a family. On my recent trip to Knoxville I experienced some mechanical problems with my car. The people I was caravanning with were very helpful, but could not fix the problem. Upon arriving in Knoxville I spoke with people from the Michigan Street Rod repair shop. They had the knowledge, tools and willingness to fix my problem. This could have been a minor disaster for me, instead it became a high point of my trip. My car was repaired, and more importantly, I made new friends. At each of the ten NSRA National Events held each year, an identical Super Prize package valued at $72,105.20 is given away to registrants during the course of the show. That means the total value for all packages in 2016 will be $721,052.00.All in all, it was a wonderful trip! We always meet new friends that we'll likely (and hopefully) see at another car show someday soon. The date for next year's event is May 5th – 7th. Mark your calendars and hope to see you there! - Donna Holland 228-332-3006 NSRA MS State Advisor

The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year. www.streetrod101.com/safetyinspection.html

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage - June 2016 Due to the circumstances involving the huge to do list the wife/Queen presented me with, I made the decision to go back to work. It was just a part time job as a delivery driver for an auto parts retailer. I can only say that a guy that builds cars and works at a parts place is not a perfect situation. Kind of like a fox guarding a hen house. Needless to say much of my check was used for pieces and parts. I almost always spent as much as I made on items for another project I had started. I can never leave well enough alone either, and it seemed, the Queen when asked if she would like to go for a ride to a cruise night or a show in the newly rebuilt Deuce Coupe would generally reply with a negative. Seems she lost interest in going places in the little car. I was informed of a roadster body for sale on E-Bay. I made a call to the owner and after wrestling with the buyer and stuff with EBay and all the confusion with creating an account and password blah blah blah. I am not much of a computer guy nor a shopper I am a typical buyer I don't shop. I became the owner of a roadster body. A trip to Jackson Ms. with the appropriate amount of funds and the Queen riding along in the truck to go get it, I picked it up and brought it home. The discussion there and back with the Queen was kind of one sided with her repeatedly reminding me how crazy this was and I was not building another car while I had the one in my garage. Little did she know I had other plans, and it involved removing the coupe body, selling it, and putting the roadster body in its place. Kinda’ kept this plan to myself too for quite some time. With the body swap came much work, and many new items to be installed for the roadster to be road worthy. I spent approximately 2 years of down time and much of my part time job funds on the change over to a roadster. It would be much better than my first one, and this one was destined to have a removable convertible looking top. While off riding my motorcycle one weekend, several packages were delivered to our house and needless to say she discovered my new plan. Again the comments regarding my sanity seemed to be the main focus of her discussion with me. Sometimes you just can’t win with these kinds of discussions so I just tried to keep quiet as best I could and convince myself this too shall pass. So I was still considered partially insane by the Queen, but I was once again on the road after working on the change to a roadster. I might add at this point this will not happen again, no more changing bodies, entirely too much work, and too much down time. I was back to going to cruise nights and car shows and supporting benefit rod runs and periodically would ask the Queen if she wanted to go. Surprisingly she agreed to many short trips and cruise-ins. She seemed to enjoy this better than the coupe. In fact she seems to go with me more than ever, kind of like when I built the first roadster. I soon got a call from a very good friend about an early Chevy pickup project that he and his nephew had started. It too had been a victim of the flooding in Lakeview. He was very disappointed and quite disgusted that all of their work was now wasted and almost useless. He was so disgusted he said to just come and get it. He figured I would be the guy to bring it back from the watery grave. So his Uncle and I made the trip and went and picked it up. Once again the Queen knew nothing of this latest adventure until she spotted it on the trailer in the back yard. Again my sanity was questioned and what the heck is that piece of junk! Until, like most all women, she found out what it cost. When I told her it was Free, and it cost me nothing, and any Queen knows a good deal like that when she sees it. Of course she also could not see the vision I had for this little old truck, but I knew what it could become.

My grandson had visited with us not long after we picked up the old truck and at the age of about 4 started to question me what I was going to do with it, and could he have it, and could I paint it blue. Of course I said yes to all of these and many other questions he had posed to me. It from that moment on the truck become Chases Big Truck. Some times it stayed outside under the carport and depending on what was being done sometimes it lived in the Carriage house, the name I gave to my garage. He has great fun in checking on its progress and I get great joy working with him at times on it. Passing the torch is not a bad thing. Watch out for the June Bugs and congratulations to all the Brides of June. Later Gizmo

PART 2 By Candy Cocktail For the past 45 years, car enthusiasts have flocked to the Barrett-Jackson collector car auctions around the United States. The event is broadcast on TV which has only increased in their popularity and large following. What began as merely an auction has evolved into an automobile lifestyle event attended by celebrities and featuring some of the world’s most sought-after and valuable automobiles. This year the event takes place in Scottsdale, Arizona, Las Vegas, Nevada, Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and Palm Beach, Florida, where I attended the event at the beginning of April. It was my first time attending the event, where spectators can witness the action of a real auction, purchase the car of their dreams and learn more about collector cars. There were a number of cars that I enjoyed looking at and some that I had never seen in person before, such as a vintage 1935 Pierce-Arrow Sedan. I always keep an eye out for a Pierce-Arrow at car shows because they are not common at shows and it was the car that my great grandparents had. They also had 2 Rolls-Royces before the Depression hit and they lost all three cars.

1932 Lincoln KB V12 Brunn Sport Phaeton

Elegant and striking, this magnificent 1932 Lincoln KB wears a custom-built Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton body in the style of Brunn. The original Brunn Sport Phaeton - and the inspiration for this car debuted at the 1932 New York Auto Show, wowing the crowds with its impeccable style. But with a $7,000 price tag, few buyers were willing or able to afford such a car during the height of the Great Depression, and it found few buyers. It has been professionally built without compromise as a part of a nutand-bolt restoration by a well-respected marque expert. The gorgeous styling and beautiful restoration earned this car a Best of Show award at the prestigious Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, as well as First in Class at the equally competitive Meadowbrook Concours d'Elegance. The body, finished in twotone red over maroon, flows elegantly from front to back with twin steeply raked windscreens, a close-fitting tan convertible top and a custom-styled trunk, lending the car a dramatically low profile. Dual rear-mount spares add another layer of sporting elegance, keeping the body sides clean and unadorned. Large 7-1/2x18" chrome wheels, double-sided whitewalls, dual Pilot Ray spot lamps and gorgeous chrome trim provide plenty of additional flash. The paint work is beautifully finished, as one would expect from a multi-concours award-winner. With a V12 engine, the cabin of this wonderful Lincoln was treated to the same level of care and detail as the rest of the body. Nearly every fastener and fitting has been correctly finished, and the engine compartment is fully detailed as per original. This is an outstanding example of one of Lincoln's most respected and desirable prewar cars.

1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible This red GTO convertible with 389ci engine upgraded with three 2barrels and a 4-speed transmission has 33,857 actual miles. The wheel rims are true original Hurst wheels, which is very rare, as this was the first year Hurst started production for Pontiac.

There are an ever increasing number of emails asking about the car in the Trunk Tales by Cubby logo. It is time to address this vehicle, I am supposing. This is a 1946 Ford. This is ole Cubby’s street rod and I have owned it since 2002. It has gone through several transformations and it is still not completed. I know most of you have used that phrase before! When I dragged it home, it looked nothing like it does today. You will be able to determine from the photos the metamorphosis. I will tell you that the car was painted solid green when I bought it. The two-tone light green over dark green paint was done later. This Ford was originally an L-Head 6 cylinder car. It now has a 350 Chevy engine from a Camaro. The 350 transmission, 10 bolt rear end, rear brakes, and rear springs are from that same Camaro. Numerous changes have been incorporated into this hot rod. Some of the most obvious are: Independent front suspension, disc brakes, LED taillights, Edelbrock 4bbl Performer carburetor, aluminum radiator (an exact copy of the original hand fabricated by” Saldana Racing Products”, Brownsburg, IN.), air conditioning skillfully and painfully installed by Tom Kaufman of “Mel’s Service Center”,” Flaming River” tilt steering column, 1940 Ford steering wheel replica, “Classic Instruments” gauges,” Cragar S/S” wheels, custom interior with electric and reclining bucket seats cut down from a 2002 S-10 Blazer, Lokar shifter, AM/ FM/CD Pioneer radio, custom console and upholstery, custom paint by Quint Walberts at “Kustom Kolors”, upholstered trunk with large hidden storage area, and custom tinted safety glass throughout. Many, many fabrications have been done to this vehicle. One not so noticeable is the exhaust manifold from a 265 ci Chevy and tricky custom exhaust fabricated by “Pork” Shidler at “Shidler’s Auto Repair”. It in itself is a work of art. I have given a brief overview of my hotrod. It is not a show car but rather a driver. I drive it every day that the weather cooperates. I would have loved to have had a car like this when I was in high school, but I couldn’t afford it. Now I can afford it and I am reliving my youth. Thanks to those of you that asked about this car. It makes all the hard work it took to create a unique vehicle worthwhile. Uncle Ezra says: Happy times come and go, but the memories stay forever.

Gotta Cruise! Cubby

It’s still "Indy 500" time and one of my favorite all-around drivers was Peter Revson, one of the Heirs of the REVLON COSMETIC fortune. The company was founded by Charles Revson and his brother Martin Revson. The fortune was estimated in the 70's at 1 billion! Peter was the son of Martin and was one of the great Indy 500 drivers. My reason for calling him "great" is the following: His 1st 500 he started 33rd, (dead last) in a Brahham. (great chassis, not much by the way of engine). He passed all the field up to 5th at the finish. The only other one that I remember passing that many cars in the "500" was Jim Rathman who started in 28th and won the race! Peter also drove in Formula One, Trans Am, and won the Can Am Canadian Championship! Peter was "Top Drawer" with his romances, including, "Miss World", Marjorie Wallace. Peter met Marjorie at the "500". He fathered an illegitimate son "Adam". Adam is believed to be living in Chicago, Illinois, and is the last male heir to the Revlon fortune! For you Ford readers in 1969, driving a Mustang in Trans Am, he finished in the top 5 seven (7) times. In 1970 he teamed with Steve McQueen, placed 2nd in the 12 hours of Sebring, Fla. - Also in 1970 he drove with Mark Donohue in the Penske Racing AMC factory Javalin. 1971 found Peter joining the Mclaren team, and subsequently became the 1st American to win the CAN-AM Championship. Also, in 1971 he set fast time at Indy 500 and finished 2nd. He competed in the Indy 500 each year from 1969-1973. Also in 1973 he won the British Grand Prix, and the Canadian Grand Prix. Peter was the only American Born driver to win a Formula One race. (circa 1973) Mario Andretti was not born in America, but was a legalized American who also won.

I know most of you who read this column know that "dirt" was our thing back then. The humor went like this "Dirt Is For Growing Potato's" and "Asphalt Is For Parking Cars". Peter had a brother, Douglas, who died in a racing crash in Denmark in 1967. Peter Revson's autobiography (Speed with Style" is available if you work at it). One last thing about racers and crashes, material failure, due to stress, kills most drivers, not driver error. Revson was in a Ford backed "Shadow" Race Car and Team. The team chassis and builder chief was quoted as follows: "We were using Titanium quite a lot, and it is very finicky, it has to be machined smooth and the surface polished". A ball joint on a rear radius rod had coarse machining and it failed! I replaced all titanium with steel. In closing remember some of the following: During our entry into WWII Nikola Tesla (inventor of AC current) was approached by our US Government to obtain plans and patents for his turbine engines. He refused stating "I can send a beam to the moon, and kill anyone it contacts". I can build an engine that produces 10 horsepower per pound! (100 X 10 = 1,000 horsepower) and it doesn't burn oil or gas! This was back in 1940, 41! The latest rumor is the Japanese have built an electric engine putting out 6 to 8 hundred horsepower, and the Formula One people have refused to allow it! I'll be back to the dirt next month, (along with asphalt) Sigh! MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK KEEP IT BETWEEN THE FENCES Larry Dunham 228-671-6216 Email: usaclarry@gmail.com

By: Mike Longo While touring the Texas Hill country on our Harleys running some of the most beautiful roads that cross crystal-clear limestone rivers such as the Frio and Guadalupe River's with cottonwoods and cypress trees lining the banks, we ran across this awesome antique motorcycle museum, the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum on highway 187 Vanderpool Texas right outside of Lost Maples State Park.

June 10-12 Birmingham AL Superbike Showdown at Barber Motorsports Park the top Superbike racers in North America return to Barber Motorsports Park, June 10-12, for round six of the 2016 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship. MotoAmerica features the country’s best motorcycle racers battling it out on the world’s fastest production-based motorcycles. The weekend will include two full days of racing—a doubleheader event—for the Superbike, Superstock 1000, Supersport, and Superstock 600 classes, plus vendors and fun for the whole family. Barber will get the spec KTM RC 390 Cup, the second-year class open to riders aged 14-22. Fans will also be pleased to see a larger field of competitors in the Superbike and Superstock 1000 classes. Barber Motorsports Park truly is a park. The racing facility located on the eastern fringes of Birmingham is green and pristine, the home of not only the 2.38-mile road course but also the “world's largest motorcycle museum.” Barber Motorsports Park is located east of the city of Birmingham in the town of Leeds. Drive/ride time is roughly 24 minutes to cover the 19.2-mile distance on I-20 into Leeds. www.motoamerica.com June 18 Catahoula, LA Levee Rats Biker Bash The poker run starts at Red's Levee Bar, 4695 Catahoula Highway in Catahoula. The owner Allan John Johncock was very nice and hospitable as he offered to allow us to sit in this beautiful antique Harley knucklehead with matching sidecar. This museum had some very rare bikes that this man has restored and a lot of rare bites that are in original as is condition. If you're in this area be sure and stop in and visit Alan. Then we ran across this gem known as the Salt Lick Winery where they grow their own grapes and bottle their own brand and right next-door is the Salt Lick barbecue restaurant which had awesome barbeque. Joining me on this trip was Janie Wallace, Mike and MJ Lyons and Dave and Roty Hobbs.

THE WAY I SEE IT

Simple Truth Low military pay was not mentioned in The State Of The Union speech. Just increasing the minimum wage was ..Hamburgers or Minimum Wage For those fast food employees striking for $15 an hour, let's do some math. At $15 an hour Johnny Fry-Boy would make $28,800 annually. An E1 (Private) in the military makes $18,804. An E5 with 8 years of service only makes $33,576 annually. So you're telling me, LaTisha McBurgerflipper, that you deserve as much as those kids getting shot at, deploying for months in hostile environments, and putting their collective asses on the line every day protecting you. Here's the deal, Baconator, you are working in a job designed for a kid in high school who is learning how to work and earning enough for gas, and hanging out with their equally goofy high school pals. If you have chosen this as your life long profession, you have failed. If you don't want minimum wage, don't have minimum skills. R.I.P. America !!! You went soft on discipline. You raised the cost of living so high that both parents are always at work, rather than spending time with their children. You took God out of schools. Parents were told 'No you can't discipline your kids'. Teachers were prevented from chastising and disciplining kids in schools. Kids had rights blah, blah, blah. Well done America!! You shall reap what you sow, and we have lost a whole generation and turned them into selfish, disrespectful brats who have no respect for parents, people, property or authority! Things need to change!

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot. There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me, For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born, Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn. We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince, Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since. We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee' And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Me. Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many, And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney. And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, Me. We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice, And when they made a movie, they never made it twice.. We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three, Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me. Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp, And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp. We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T, And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.

500 - $80 Black & White 500 - $30 228-596-0664

We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go, At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe. For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be, And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead, And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson, and Zeppelins were not Led. And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees, Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me. We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars, And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars. And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free, And dorms were never co-Ed in the Land That Made Me, Me. We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag, And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag. And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea, And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me. T-Birds came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks, And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks. And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee, And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me. We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues, We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me, Me. There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill, And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three, And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me. But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say, And now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retin-A. They send us invitations to join AARP, We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me. So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans, And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines. And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be, Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.
