She is also returning to SEMA Oct 31 thru Nov 3, 2017 and will be following some of Rat Rod friends she writes about in Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine, on their challenge to make that long journey to the Las Vegas Convention Center, NV. ‘Our Road to SEMA’ starting on page 26 will give you an idea of what it takes to get there.

For those who missed the Atomic Blast and wonder if it was bigger, better, and more exciting… well the answer is YES!!! What a great time. I guess you might say this is the greatest family event of the year. So many people say the youth of today just doesn’t care about the Hot Rod lifestyle, but you couldn’t prove that to me, as I watched young boys and girls of all ages participate in different events.

Nancy & I got to take a weekend off and go to Burnin’ up the Beaches car show and boy has that one gotten bigger. We had a great time. Then after a quick week of magazine office work a much needed trip to Houston, Texas to see our grown up kids & the grandkids. I even had a chance to meet up with Dennis Hom who I met at this years Atomic Blast while there.

After a quick trip home and only four days to finish this months magazine we go to print.

Hope you enjoy Jimbo, For many of us, learning to drive was memorable. Some of us took a class. Some didn't. Either way, most got licensed to drive. Recently I read a drivers licensing handbook. Current versions are available on-line.

Being in the wrong lane is a major cause of fatal accidents. Driver error, impaired drivers, speeding, night driving, bad weather, bad roads, and mechanical failures also cause fatal accidents.

Reflecting, I learned driving as a child listening to my dad talk about other drivers. “He didn't need to pull out in front of me! He could see me coming!” In the hills, a major social blunder is to pull out if you see someone coming. No one wants to be behind someone they could have been ahead of.

to drive on highways. After passing written and driving tests, I took Drivers' Ed in high school--just the classroom book parts. The instructor preferred teaching on-road driving to other students who would listen to what he told them. He knew I didn't listen.

My wife grew up in the flat mid-west. She learned in class that, “Centrifugal Force will throw you off the road--if you go too fast around curves.” That seemed silly to me. There are only curves connected by other curves. How fast one goes around curves is how one drives in the hills.

Recently, I drove a project-car slowly on back roads to test road worthiness. I came to stop at a “Tee”. Needing to turn left, I looked to see if someone was coming. No one was coming. My line of sight was 500 feet due to curves. Not wanting to pull out in front of someone, but needing to pull out, I kicked the accelerator and popped the clutch.

The old long-stroke flathead six-cylinder engine had more torque than expected. I went across both lanes. Pulling hard left on the wheel, staying on the road, it happened. Yep. Centrifugal Force threw me on the floorboard. Someone had not bolted my seat. Someone had not fastened my seat belt. To get up I had to pull myself up with my left hand, which was on the steering wheel.

Back on the seat, I was headed for “Armco” guard rail on the left shoulder. I jerked the wheel hard right. Tires squealed. The old car turned like a battleship. It just missed the guard rail. I looked around. A Bart Simpson Moment. “I did not do that. Nobody saw me do that.”

Thankfully, no one was coming around the curve while I was in the wrong lane. Driving 50 years, under 30 mph, I made beginner mistakes.

A good scare is worth hundreds of hours of instruction. In an instant, I learned to be sure my seat is bolted, to wear my seat belt tight, to not kick an old engine, and to respect Centrifugal Force. That was real Drivers' Ed. mrlonranger@ Jimbo, There was a big party on the bayou hosted by the richest man in South Louisiana. He had recently built a huge tank and stocked it with many alligators, piranhas, and other man-eating reptiles. To liven up the party, he issued a challenge to all of his guests. He announced that if anyone was brave enough to swim the length of the tank he would gladly grant them three wishes. Not surprisingly, there were no takers. So the party continued with everyone "passing a good time."

Suddenly, there was a huge splash. As the host looked on, he could see a man swimming like crazy across the tank with the reptiles chomping at his heels. The crowd was cheering wildly! Lo and behold, the man made it unharmed across the tank. As he climbed out, it became obvious to everyone that the brave soul was none other than ole Boudreaux.

The host excitedly ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and offered his sincere congratulations. "Wow, Boudreaux," said the host, "You made it!

What a courageous thing to do! So what are your three wishes?"

"Well, da first t'ing I want, me, is a double barrel shotgun," said Boudreaux.

"No problem," said the host.

"Da second t'ing is two shells for da shotgun," Boudreaux continued.

"Done," responded the host.

Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.

Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while

vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.

Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coast cities uninhabitable!!!

I must apologize, I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post 93 years ago.

A dentist noticed that his next patient, a little old lady, was nervous so he decided to tell her a little joke as he put on his gloves.

"Do you know how they make these gloves?" he asked.

"Well," he spoofed, "there's a building in Mexico with a big tank of latex and workers of all hand sizes walk up to the tank, dip in their hands, let them dry, then peel off the gloves and throw them into boxes of the right size."

She didn't crack a smile. "Oh, well. I tried," he thought.

But five minutes later, during a delicate portion of the procedure, she burst out laughing.

Southern Lifestyle? I am not Southern, nor a Yankee. We own a house in Gulfport. Folks there have explained owning a house does not make us residents. Our residence is in WV, that is, the state of West Virginia (for those who might not care, West Virginia is not western Virginia—it is a separate State, formed, unconstitutionally, from VA during the Civil War. I think WV was formed because Yankees wanted the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for war use, and folks in VA did not care what happened to WV.) My ancestors came from Alsace in mid-1700’s and fought the French and Indians and Brits, and probably everyone else. I have been a resident of WV for 90% of my years since 1948. WV is filled with kind and wonderful people. Much like the South.

An old friend passed away years ago, a descendent of the (Stonewall) Jackson family, in my youth gave me his magazines called Southern Living. Mr. Jackson tried to improve me. He would take me to the Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh. He would buy a drink and say a toast, “Strike a Blow for Liberty!” I wish. But those days are gone. We are lucky, with passports. We don’t push our luck.

I go to several local (60 miles away or less is local to me) car shows, and often cruise nights throughout the year. And the Queen always asks me. How can you sit around most of the day waiting for the awards to be given out and then head home, or to another event? And my answer is always the same; it’s all about fun with cars.

Well that’s not really the correct answer, the cars just get us there, and mostly it’s the people. Yes the cars are interesting in their shapes, styles and colors. The people that build and take care of and restore these objects of days gone by are the absolutely most important reasons I go to these events.

I will attempt to explain, the people I am friends with and the ones whom I have not met yet are who get me to car shows. The beneficiaries (the charities, and individuals in many cases, more people) are also another reason I attend. Oh I do appreciate the cars and the work done to them, but I appreciate the stories the owners tell about the finding or the building of their precious vehicles even more. Inside each and every car at these shows or cruise nights are some valuable cargos containing many memories of journeys and struggles, and joy.

I often try to ask questions of the owners about how it came to be that this was their ride of choice. The answers are as varied as the number of stars in the sky. All of these discussions are always quite interesting and often times very amusing. I appreciate the stories they share and always thank them for sharing and attending the chosen event. So it kind of is about the cars and trucks and motorcycles, but it’s mostly the people that choose to take care of them and enjoy them. And the same can be said about the people, they also come in many shapes and styles and colors as well, and I appreciate them all.

Hope you all have a Happy Fathers Day, and go take a ride or cruise, and make some memories and add to your stories. I look forward to hearing them.

Grandma is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car. She writes: Dear Grand-daughter, The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a 'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker .. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did; what an uplifting experience that followed.

I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed. I found that lot of people love Jesus!

While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'For the love of God!' 'Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!' What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking!

I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love!

There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach. I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my young teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant. He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back. My grandson burst out laughing. Why even he was enjoying this religious experience!!

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared. So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!!

Two robins were sitting in a tree. "I'm really hungry", complained the first one. "Me, too" consented the second. "Let's fly down and find some lunch."

They flew to the ground and found a nice plot of plowed ground full of worms. They ate and ate and ate and ate 'til they could eat no more. "I'm so full I don't think I can fly back up to the tree," admitted the first one. "Me either. Let's just lay here and bask in the warm sun," suggested the second.

"O.K." agreed the first. They plopped down, basking in the sun. No sooner than they had fallen asleep, when a big fat tomcat snuck up and gobbled them up! As he sat, washing his face after his meal, he thought to himself, "I just love baskin' robins."

As you are cursing the person driving 15 mph in a 55 mph zone, directly in the middle of the road, remember, many folks learned to drive on a vehicle known as John Deere, and this is the proper speed and lane position for the vehicle. And remember if ask them for directions, unless you already know the positions of key hills, trees, and rocks, you're better off trying to find it yourself.

By: Michael Lachaussee A mix of old and new cars and trucks cruised in to Hardee's in Lucedale this morning. Weather didn't disappoint us at the monthly Hardee's breakfast car gathering in Lucedale. There were 45+ cars and trucks at this month's breakfast, including 6 Corvettes, all of which were beautiful.

This breakfast cruise in has everything - great cars/trucks to view, good food and happy "car" talk by some knowledgeable car buffs. There is always information on cars being sold or bought and scoops on where to get what you need for your restoration or repair. This group always enjoys fellowship with like car enthusiast and showing off their latest addition or simply sporting the car that's like a family member. It's a great venue to share and enjoy this great hobby.

This 1923 Ford T Bucket belongs to Roy Jenkins of Agricola. Roy has owned the Tbucket for nine years. After his purchase he replaced the front end and did some other upgrades. Normally this T-bucket travels in it's 20 foot trailer home but since Hardee's is close enough for Roy to drive without getting drowned in the rain, he takes the chance.

Dale Patterson of Wiggins brought his 1932 five window Ford Coupe. His major change was to un-channel it. Dale is a pretty big guy and found the channeled coupe was a little difficult to maneuver in and out of! Dale has rebuilt the transmission, rear end and various other items. We hope to see Dale again at the breakfast in this sharp looking little Coupe.

The '52 Chevy truck featured here belongs to Kevin and Marea Morris from Wiggins, MS. They have had the truck for a year and purchased it from Cecil Mallette who restored it over 20 years ago. The sign on the side was painted by Stone printing and is displayed on the side in honor of Art Overstreet. In addition to this truck, Marea has a 1968 Volkswagen.

I was told this 1946 Chevrolet truck owned

by David (Gabby) Glazier from Wade is all original. I think the only thing original here is Gabby!! Needless to say, Gabby has spent countless hours getting his truck running and we were glad to see him at the breakfast today.

A never before seen at the Breakfasat 1948 Oldsmobile belongs to Eugene and Brenda Brown of Hurley, Ms. They purchased this car from David (Gabby) Glazier in the condition you see. He has been working 3 1/2 years restoring this vehicle. Eugene did everything with the exception of the final paint and upholstery. Eugene and Brenda went to Cruisin the Coast in 2013 and knew they had to have a car to participate in this fun event. They said they were bitten by the bug and this is the end result of the bug! Great job to you both and many happy days of Cruisin!

COASTAL CRUISERS Of SLIDELL, LA

“20th Anniversary” Car & Truck Show

The Coastal Cruisers hosted their 20 Anniversary Camilla City Car & Truck Show on Saturday April. 15th at the Northshore Mall Shopping Center.

It was a perfect day for a car show and fun was had by people of all ages. The Classic Cars, Trucks, Rat Rods, and Motor Bikes that attended had spectators reminiscing about an era in the past where cars were made of steel and the models changed each fall and each unique in styling.

The Coastal Cruisers with the help of their generous sponsors presented numerous awards and dash plaques to registered vehicles. The show also included a silent auction, black out board, bingo, and a 50/50 drawing where the winner took home over $800.00.

The show was a great success thanks to all that attended.

Congratulations also to the club members and the sponsors who helped make this a success. Because of the success of the show The Coastal Cruisers of Slidell, La. will present a sizable and equal donation to the following charities; “STARC” and “THE CHILDREN’S WISH ENDOWMENT”.

Mississippi Street Rod Association Makes presentation to The Little Lighthouse School For the last three years the Mississippi Street Rod Association has held a raffle to benefit the Little Light House School for special needs children.

This year the street rodders raised $2,700.00 for the school and on May 11th the presentation of funds was given by representatives of the Mississippi Street Rod Association to, new Director, Mrs. Fran Patterson and Mrs. Tammy Tadlock.

Some of the students were also there to participate in the presentation.

The school sees to the needs of these children in teaching them sign language, speech therapy, numbers, letters, social skills, and prepares them for their journey into the next phase of their education. It is a Christian based school located at the Briarwood Presbyterian Church where the Church donates space for the school.

The staff is well equipped to handle these kids and do a wonderful job with them.

If you have not visited this school you have really missed a great opportunity, so take the time to go and have your heart melted by just one visit. The staff and the children are very special people, and will hold a very special place in your heart.

The street rod association hopes that this fundraiser in some small way will help the needs of the children and the school.

Later in the year, The Mississippi Street Rod Association will hold a Christmas Stocking event for all the kids and present them at the school. They invite anyone to come and share the experience and see the joy on the faces of these very special children.

The Cole Report Started out this month at the Cruise in Cafe in the Kiln. The next day we headed to Slidell for the Camillia City Car Show hosted by the Coastal Cruisers. This one is always a big show with al ot going on all for a good cause.

That night we stayed in Slidell for the cruise in at Fremaux Mall nice cruise-in even though the rained slowed it down a little.

Made our weekly Car/bike night at the Silver Slipper Casino this one is a nice relaxing evening hang out.

Next up was one of the big yearly events the Atomic Blast Show at Gulfport Dragway this one is some of the most fun you can have at an event. Definitely a blast from the past with dragracing, freestyle burnouts, flame throwing, mini bike racing, rat rods, old school/traditional hot rods, customs classics jalopies, lead-sleds and anything in between. It's a must see.

The next show we attended was the Gnat Nationals in Bay St. Louis hosted by the Misfit Street Krewzers. Always a big show with lots of prizes/awards and great home cooked food. All for a great cause.

We finished out the month at the Edgewater Mall cruise-in in Biloxi with the Coast Cruizers Cruise-in.

May 4-6 Nancy & I went to Burnin’ up the Beaches in Destin Florida. The show took place at one of Nancy’s favorite shopping places, The Destin Commons. What a great car show venue.

We set up the Gulf Coast MotorSports Hot Rod Alley tent. It was nice to meet and greet old and new subscribers of the magazine. The weather was a little windy but the Saturday show was just perfect.

Cars and trucks were pulling into the parking lot early Saturday morning and over 300 plus cars & trucks joined the folks who arrived Thursday and Friday that were pre-registered. Lot’s of venders took advantage of the car show and set up too.

This was the 6th year for this Annual Event. Proceed from this show go to the Arc of the Emerald Coast.

“Burning up the Beaches” was designed in conjunction with the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce as a fundraiser for The Arc of the Emerald Coast. ARC was founded originally in the 1950’s by parents of mentally and physically handicapped children, these parents developed programs providing education, training and support for their children and soon became the Association of Retarded Citizens (Arc). baby2Horizons of Okaloosa County (now known as The Arc of the Emerald Coast) grew out of this strong foundation and was established in 1992. Our goal is to provide valued services including advocacy, education and support for people with disabilities, their families, and others in the community. We enable people to live, work, play as we do through opportunities for choice and realization of goals. We offer our clients the opportunity to be as independent as possible. By serving children and adults with various intellectual and developmental disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, Williams Syndrome and Sensory Impairments. Our programs include supported employment, vocational training, adult day training facilities, companion services, group homes and supported living facilities.

The Arc’s vision has served as the standard bearer for other Arc agencies with the highest ethics and professionalism to guide us. And thanks to people like you, the future is bright for Arc and all our clients!

I am a very proud American – I was raised to be. My family is full of very proud Americans, many of whom have put their lives on the line for our country and what she stands for. In my immediate family alone I have a handful: my dad, Charles Vincent, U.S. Merchant Marine, was a World War II Veteran; my cousin, John Kirwin, U.S. Army, died as a Prisoner of War in Korea; my husband, Charlie, U.S. Army, is a Vietnam Veteran; Charlie’s son, David, U.S. Army, and my son, Michael, U.S. Marine Corps, are both Active Duty Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. Our family bleeds Red, White and Blue.

So, when Charlie and I heard about the 4th Annual Louisiana Veterans Festival at Northshore Harbor Center in Slidell, Louisiana, we knew we wanted to attend. When we heard there would be a classic car show, we knew we wouldn’t miss it. The event took place Saturday, May 13, 2017.

The Festival was created in 2013 “to honor and celebrate the service and sacrifice of armed service veterans throughout the State of Louisiana. All proceeds benefit the East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build Program.” The program helps low-income Veterans obtain homeownership.

The event included, in addition to the Car Show, craft vendors, informational booths, firefighter demonstrations including the use of the “Jaws of Life” to extricate someone from a demolished vehicle, and lots of great bands including local favorites, the top Cats, 90 Degrees West and Amanda Shaw and her Cute Guys.

Charlie and I had a wonderful day meeting and speaking with many Veterans of war. There is no doubt in my mind that, should the need arise, each and every one of them would defend our country again – and without pause.

May God bless all the men and women who have worn, or wear still, a uniform in defense of America, on foreign or domestic soil, whether Military, Law Enforcement or Fire Protection. We are a great nation because of them and I am eternally grateful.

BRITISH MOTORING CLUB NEW ORLEANS 27TH ANNUAL BRITISH CAR DAY The British Motoring Club New Orleans held its 27th Annual British Car Day at Delgado Community College in New Orleans on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

The British Car gods were not smiling upon them because there was heavy rain on and off all day. Quite a few cars that were registered in advance chose not to come to combat the weather.

The BMCNO has, for the last several years, held their event at Delgado and all proceeds go to scholarships for Delgado Automotive Department students. The students must have an excellent GPA and be able to answer many questions to prove their knowledge about their subject. Last year, seven scholarships were awarded.

The BMCNO puts on an enviable display of cars – some classic and some contemporary. Represented were MG, Lotus, Morgan, Aston Martin, Jaguar, De Lorean, Austin-Healey, Rolls-Royce, and many more.

The youngest entrant was Justin Clark with his beautiful Lotus.

Justin is in his final year at the University of Southern Alabama majoring in Computer Science. When I asked Justin if the car he was working to put a BMCNO medallion on the front grille of was, in fact, his, he quipped, “the bank might disagree!”

If you have the chance to attend at British Motoring Club show near you, I recommend you stop in and give it a look. You might just find a new favorite.

8th Annual Bama Coast Cruise Friday and Saturday April 27th and 28th was the 8th Annual Bama Coast Cruise at The Wharf in beautiful Orange Beach, AL. If you have never attended this car show, you need to get this one on your “must do” list for 2018. I headed out late Wednesday afternoon for the 125 mile trip from the MS Gulf Coast to Orange Beach. The beaches in Orange Beach are pristine with beautiful white sand, emerald green, clear water and majestic waves on most days. The Wharf is a picture rest shopping center with premiere retail shops, unique boutiques, dinning complete with fresh seafood and it’s overlooking the Wharf Marina. Also at The Wharf is the South’s largest Ferris Wheel. It’s a great place to just hang out and watch the sun set, add in a huge car show and it’s just short of heaven.

Thursday was setup day at Bama Coast Cruise, we got The Hot Rod Show trailer setup with two additional remote speaker locations. The Wharf presents a challenge with its massive concrete parking garages when it comes to wireless sound, but we were able to work it out. Now imagine a giant car show in the setting I described above… with 752 registered cars! Two years ago, VIP parking was begun…to keep people from fussing over the 200 or so prime parking spots on Main Street, VIP Parking was offered. The cruisers love VIP parking. Each VIP spot has a placard with your name on it, your car info and your registration number, it’s your spot. It means you can sleep late and your spot is waiting for you. Need to make a run back to your hotel? Your spot is waiting for you when you return. For 2018 those spots are $120 each and sold out. 70% of those spots were renewed during this year’s car show, the remaining 30% sold out the first day of 2018 open registration. But don’t let that stop you from going to this car show, there are 100’s more great parking spots.

The energy from this car show is amazing. The Hot Rod Show kept the music going with trivia, memory lane bits, old commercials and TV & Movie drops. The Mega 50/50 was sold over two days, Friday and Saturday. The jackpot was $7,010 dollars, the winner went home with $3505… talking about a happy camper! The show ended with a parade down Orange Beach with over 400 classic cars participating. Vendors, great food, a swap meet, this incredible setting and maybe you are just starting to see what makes Bama Coast Cruise so very special. Sonny McLean and his wife Deborah work all year long putting together this incredible show.

As I finish up this piece, it is Sunday afternoon May 14, Mother’s Day. I went out last night to the White Cap Seafood Restaurant and chowed down on some great seafood, as I knew today I would have to be on a clear liquid diet as I prepare for major surgery tomorrow at Ochsner’s in New Orleans. By the time you read this I hope I’m back to work. Friday night was horrible. I had a 7 pm appointment for an MRI. My first one didn’t end well earlier in the week, I thought I could just man up and handle it, they got me in that MRI tunnel and I said in a loud firm voice…”Get me outa here now!” So for Friday night I was told I would have drugs put into my IV, so I’m thinking Propofol…better known as the Michael Jackson

sleepy drug. But no… what they gave me was the sedative “Versed” to make me more comfortable. I’m thinking I’m not going to be able to do this scan again and it’s going to delay my surgery.

Well they give me the drug and I’m out. The problem was I came back after 20 minutes of a 60 minute MRI scan. I said…”Hey I’m back, can you give me some more to knock me back out!!!” The MRI tech said no, you’ve had all you can have. I know from having one of these awful scans back in the 90’s if you move they have to start over. So I had to talk to myself real hard for 40 minutes. If you are not claustrophobic, I guess they are easy. But if you are the least bit uncomfortable in tight places they are inhumane! Like being in a culvert with your nose six inches from the top for an hour on your back and laying completely still! Go to YouTube and search for Jerry Clower’s “My MRI.” Jerry’s funny take on his MRI about sums it up for me and it also sums up my thoughts of ever having another one.

“Cannon Ball” When I write the name Erwin George Baker do you know who I am talking about? If I tell you he was a vaudeville artist does that help? What about telling you he was a motorcycle racer that won the 10-mile national championship at the new Indianapolis Speedway in 1909?

Would you know him if you thought about him being the first Commissioner of NASCAR? Does the name “Cannon Ball” Baker help? I think you know that name.

So, who was Erwin George Baker? “He was home a lot. He was retired,” said Bob Biehl, who grew up six doors to the east in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Indianapolis.

“It looked like he was starved for company, so as young kids, when we were looking for something to do, we'd go down there.” It was a house that Baker had built in 1925, and was his dream home. It was a three bedroom, two- bath, brick sided bungalow, with a sweeping roof of clay tile and a broad front porch overlooking Garfield Park's sunken gardens. Baker grew up in a log cabin. He had a wife and a son named Sherman. Another neighborhood kid in the 1950's, Jim Simmons would visit with him on his way home from baseball practice. “He was a little gruff, but not a lot”, Simmons said. “He liked to talk about his experiences, but he wasn't a braggart. He just related things as they happened. The weather he went through, the terrain, the surface he was riding on, the people who were helpful to him along the way, what it took in terms of stamina.”

The stories were true. In addition to winning the first race ever held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909, (a four lap motorcycle sprint) his best adventures were his record setting cross-country speed runs. In 1914 he rode an Indian motorcycle from San Diego to New York in 11 days, 11 hours, 11 minutes; in 1916 he drove a Cadillac roadster from Los Angeles to New York in 7 days, 11 hours, 52 minutes. He crossed Jamaica, Cuba, and Panama on a motorcycle. He drove a Rickenbacker car from Canada to Mexico. In a Franklin, he raced a train from New York to Chicago and won. In his lifetime “Cannon Ball” covered 5.5 million miles and made 126 coast to coast runs. This marvelous man also spent time as a machinist, boxer, Vaudeville artist, bicycle racer, and first commissioner of NASCAR, just to name a few.

When Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker died of a heart attack in Community Hospital in Indianapolis, May 10, 1960 at age 78, he had accomplished more than a lot of people. On his tombstone, an imposing, granite monument in Crown Hill Cemetery, he had inscribed: “Cannon Ball Baker”. This man born in Dearborn County, Indiana in 1882, who was brought up in a four room log cabin, was compared to the Cannonball train of the Illinois Central made famous by Casey Jones. That is how he received his nickname. A decade after his death, he was remembered with the debut of an unsanctioned cross-country motor race called the “Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash”.

That was the inspiration for two box-office successes of the 1980's, “Cannonball Run” and “Cannonball Run II”.

Today, the name “Cannon Ball” Baker is largely lost in history.

This 6'2”, 225 lb. man should be remembered as a pioneer as well as a record breaker, with a lengthy and diverse history. It is fitting.

NSRA NATIONAL SOUTH May 5-7th was the 43rd NSRA National South show. It was held at the Chilhowee Park and Expo Center in Knoxville, TN. Floyd and I left on Thursday and drove in bad weather most of the way. When we got there, we were able to pick up our packages at the Marriott, which was the host of the show and was a really lovely hotel. There were lots of cars rolling in - even with the terrible weather. Saturday gave us half a day without rain and there were street rods that had driven 1000+ miles to get there.

I got to pick a post-'49 street rod at this show and teamed up with the Florida NSRA Inspector, Linda. We decided on a beautiful gold '67 Camaro just before the bottom fell out. When the rain finally cleared, the Camaro was already gone, so there's no picture to show.

It was also a nice surprise when some of the Misfits showed up - Cathy and Henry, Catherine and Pace, Audie and Tony. Always enjoy spending time with them!

We had our Second Saturday Cruise-In in April at the Harbor in Bay St. Louis. We had more than 110 cars come through! At the cruise-in, Jason Polite and his wife, Angela, joined the NSRA. They were cruising in a 1972 Suburban named 'Thin Mint.' The original owner was a Girl Scout from Fort Worth, TX. They are in the C10 Club of Mississippi and they were also the MIsfits Club Pick of the night.

By: Gizmo I had the pleasure to meet Eric Hingle a number of years ago at a car show, he had a very well done S-10 Pickup that he had built himself, and it was on air bags and had a very cool and quite complicated paint job. It was easy to see this was a talented young rodder. Today he is the owner of his own business, known as Hingle’s Street Rods and Customs.

Like most all in this sport/hobby/business, he too started at a young age tinkering and working on cars and trucks. He started doing modifications to his own, as well as friend’s cars. Seeing his Dad had a body shop it was a place for him to help and hone some skills in that effort as well.

So as opportunity presented itself, he opened up a shop in 2002, and began a full time journey of turning out some real nice cars and pickup trucks The C-10 in the pictures was a recent build and it is one fine piece. The other pictures are of customers’ cars that are in for either LS conversions or just finishing up, and the orange 40 Chevy was very recently finished and is off to upholstery, probably the only thing he does not do.

He enjoys doing the older vehicles on the newer chassis, such as the 4755 first series pickups and suburban/panels on later model S-10 frames. He is also well equipped to do the LS conversions into just about anything one would like to put one in, and make it look like it was there from the factory.

For those that wish to do air bags on custom trucks and cars, he is quite capable of that as well and can build custom raised frame parts and amazing tube frame sections for the rear as well. A very talented builder I might add.

His shop is like a one stop place to get some major modifications done and done well. He can do it all to, from paint and body, all types of welding, chassis building and modifications, fabricating, and engine swaps. He is a very capable and talented young man. If you are shopping around and have a need for modifications to your favorite toy, give him a call, or stop in and talk with him a little, see for yourself what’s going on in his shop.

By Candy Cocktail Based in Rockville, Maryland, the Fisher House Foundation is a non-profit organization whose primary focus is the United States military service members, their families and American military veterans. Fisher Houses are "a home away from home" for families and caregivers of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA Medical Centers. Located within walking distance or having transportation available, the houses provide temporary housing close to a loved one in a military hospital during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.

To date, Fisher Houses have provided more than 7 million days of lodging to 305,000 families since 1990. Since then, the estimated amount of savings to military families is over $360 million.

The houses are typically 5,000 to 16,800 square foot homes donated by the Fisher family and Fisher House Foundation. Each house is designed to provide 8 to 21 suites. All are professionally furnished and decorated in the tone and style of the local region.

The houses can accommodate 16 to 42 family members. They feature a common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room and an inviting living room with a library and toys for children. The newest houses are 100% handicap accessible and include elevators. A Fisher House is a temporary residence and is not a treatment facility, hospice or counseling center.

Fisher Houses are given to the U. S. Government as gifts.

Military service secretaries and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the homes.

The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, builds new houses, and assists in the coordination of private support and encourages public support for the homes.

Rated as a 4 out of 4 star charity for 12 years consecutively, the Fisher Houses mean so much to military families. Fisher Houses can be found across the country, and in Germany and England.

The Fisher House Foundation administers the Hero Miles Program which is a service that provides round-trip airfare to wounded, injured and ill service members and/or their families who are undergoing treatment at a military or VA medical center; and to attend authorized events. Flights are made possible through frequent flyer mile donations made by individual airline passengers. The request for tickets originates with the Service member and is forwarded to Fisher House Foundation by social work staff or the family assistance center at a medical center, or through service casualty offices. Fisher House is proud to partner with Hero Miles in support of our wounded and injured service men and women and their families.

Founded almost 27 years ago, I first learned of this charity several years ago, around 2002, when a Fisher House was there for my family in a time of need. My grandfather, a retired Air Force colonel fell ill while he and my grandmother were visiting Spain.

After spending some time in a Spanish hospital, doctors told my grandma they were not sure if he would pull through. They always flew military on their trips and somewhere social workers got involved, and they arranged for my grandfather to be flown to the base in Germany to receive more medical care and for my grandmother to stay at the Fisher House nearby so she could be there while he recovered.

He did indeed recover, but my grandmother was forever thankful for the comfort the house gave her at a difficult time. The Germany Fisher House made a huge impression on her. She was so impressed with the Fisher Houses; how wonderful they were, how

it was like a home for her and that all the people involved with the organization were so kind and helpful. Over the next 15 years, she and my grandfather told many people about the organization and how helpful it was to them in their time of need.

Upon their deaths last year, I was happy to be able to donate both of their frequent flyer miles to the Hero Miles program, to pay it forward if you will, by helping other military families that could be in a similar situation. My family was grateful to the exceptional work of the Fisher House Foundation. Since 2005, the Operation Hero Miles program has provided more than 63,000 plane tickets to Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom wounded warriors and their families, worth over $100 million.

So where did the idea for the Fisher House come from? In the mid-1970's, Pauline Trost was visiting the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda for a clinic visit when she saw a helicopter land and a sailor, his wife and two children departing with their luggage.

She thought to herself how they surely would not be able to stay there long because she knew how expensive the hotels in the D.C. Area were. In 1986, when her husband became the Chief of Naval Operations, she thought it would be a good time to pursue her dream of providing affordable temporary housing for families of those facing a medical crisis at Bethesda. She spoke with the president of the Washington area Naval Officers Wives Club, and asked her and other members to explore her new project idea.

At the beginning of 1990, her husband received a call from their friend, architect Zachary Fisher, who had provided generous assistance to families of service personnel beset by tragedy.

Zachary indicated that he was prepared to expand his support and asked for thoughts on projects he might undertake which would benefit personnel of all military services. Pauline's husband mentioned her dream; Zachary was taken by the idea.

Not long after, a site was identified for the first house, and in 1991, the first Fisher House opened with President and Mrs. Bush joining the Fishers and Trosts at the dedication ceremony. In 1991, the first two Fisher Houses opened at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Zachary Fisher later told her it was the most satisfying thing he had ever done.

In April of this year, Zachary Fisher was named to the Philanthropy Hall of Fame. Mr. Fisher was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. In 1999, President Clinton signed Public Law 106-161 establishing Zachary Fisher as an honorary veteran in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The son of immigrants, Zachary Fisher started with little but America’s promise of opportunity. At 16, he left school to enter the family trade as a bricklayer. Following decades of hard work, Zachary eventually became one of the most prominent developers of the New York City skyline. A construction knee injury prevented him from serving in WWII, but he always held the military in high regard. “There is a dignity and majesty in the efforts of all our Armed Forces, and it is well for us to remember the noble deeds of those who have worn the uniform,” said Zachary some years before he died in 1999.

He lived by those words; over the years, Zachary and his wife Elizabeth supported many philanthropic causes, but the US military was never far from their thoughts, making dark days a little better for hundreds of thousands of people. Spending millions of their own money, they spearheaded the effort to save the retired aircraft carrier Intrepid from the scrap heap and transform it into one of the world’s largest sea, air and space museums. They personally provided cash gifts to families of fallen service members and scholarships to veterans and their families. In 1990, Zachary began a remarkable partnership with Department of Defense, and later Department of Veterans Affairs, to build Fisher Houses that were to be built like “a home away from home.”

“Where there is military, there is a Fisher House. Where there is a Fisher House, there will always be caring, warmth, security, and compassion. I look back and I know that I have made a difference in someone’s life. I look forward and feel certain that we will be making meaningful changes in many lives for decades to come,” Zachary said. Today the Fisher House Foundation is led by

It is rumored that in December of 2004, while actor Denzel Washington was filming the movie Glory, he visited Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. While there, the popular actor took part in a Purple Heart ceremony, presenting medals to three Army soldiers who were recovering in the hospital from wounds received in Iraq.

He visited recovering soldiers in the medical center and toured one of the two fisher houses. It is said that he was so impressed with the facility, that he immediately wrote out a check for a sizable donation to aid in the building of more fisher houses.

It is estimated that the fisher houses have saved more than $360 million in lodging and transportation costs since 1990. Guests of the houses average a stay of 10 days. The Fisher House foundation is not just a top rated charity, the organization also offers military related scholarships. Since 2000, a total of 10,000 students have shared $18,000,000 in scholarship grants through their scholarship programs.

The Fisher House website offers a variety of ways for those interested in helping the organization to donate, from time to fundraising to the Fisher House Golf Classic. Even your frequent flyer miles may be donated to help get airline tickets to injured and ill service members and their families. The Fisher House has an official magazine published semiannually, called The Patriot.

May 13, 2017 - After many shows and a lot of traveling, time for us to slow down a little bit and get back home.

Rev It Up is my clubs home show. The old oaks the ST Johns River as a back drop makes the view of this show outstanding.

Many cars from different clubs came despite the bad weather, smoke, and recent weeks of ashes falling from the sky from the forest fires in Florida. The rain came and passed and people still showed.

We managed to fire up the engines and Rev for all in attendance. Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, and Rat Rods waking the riverfront area of Moosehaven. This is a new location for this show but the location has the potential to expand with way more room for future endeavors. We raised a good deal of money for local charities including K9s for warriors and many others.

Stefanie Lea Here's a little insight into what makes me support everything and anything within our Rat Rod family. And just why I'm so excited about OUR ROAD TO SEMA 2017. This will also explain why I'm so proud & honored to support Flammin' 8 Speed Shop.

If you have met Jeramie and Josh along with his team, then you know they are all the real deal. You will gain the same respect for all of these guys, like everyone that's ever met them. After you hear a dream come true.

Maybe even the same dream so many of you have dreamed once before! Not only because of the sprit and passion these guys have for life that helped make this dream become a reality, but like any and all Rat Rod builders from coast to coast will tell you, these guys have proven what it takes to earn the respect from all the Ol' School guys! Earning the respect from all the TRUE RAT ROD LOVERS isn't an easy task.

The 1946 Gasser Rat Rod Truck pulled into the motel at 3 am. from the cross country trip. They were meeting me in Mississippi, for the 6th annual ATOMIC BLAST at the Gulfport Dragway. I promised them a weekend of burnouts, drag racing & some great southern hospitality. I wanted Jeramie and Josh to meet my parents, my closest friends, my mentor Jimbo Perkins.

Along with a few hundred Rat Rod family members from all over the southeast. And of course CRAB MAN himself. This was sure to be a great weekend for us all!

We made time for a beach trip for lunch one day. Made several passes down the drag strip, running with anything that pulled up beside us!

Several sharpies were passed around for signing names on the barrel. At night story telling and laughter filled the air as all of us learned more about each other and what bought us together.

As we sat along side and in the truck bed of that 1946 Gasser at the track one night! I learned how fate really does bring people together. Jeramie told us that SEMA has been on his bucket list since he was 18 years old.

While working at a tire shop selling aftermarket wheels and parts.

He kept trying to convince the owner that it would be a great idea to send him to SEMA. But that clearly wasn't going to happen. As they only thought of him a young and dumb kid with big dreams.

Well, twenty years later while Jeramie was at the fall 2016 Eradicate Cancer Cruise, supporting friends for a great cause, he learned about a group of rat rods that were driving to SEMA soon. Now Jeramie is up for any road trip and is known to travel anywhere in the country. Of course he would drive one of the rat rods he might have on hand. The interest in joining this group was nothing short of reality.

After some phone calls and messaging Jeramie was given the ok to join the group. So with Josh Ellsworth his fearless copilot, and jumping through some hoops, he and Josh were registered with SEMA and ready to go!

Dreams are starting to come true, as they loaded up the 1946 Gasser Truck and hit the road. Later the guys found out some people that they had made friends with at other rat rod events were also part of the group.

Two cars from Thunder Bay Canada came down. Then they all met up with other Rat Rod family members from southern Minnesota. Gathering at a friends home, the excitement was in full swing. Now that the group was together its time to head out west.

It was a small group but an experienced one. Seven people, four vehicles, two pulling small trailers with supplies. Jeramie and Josh in the gasser being one of them.

The first destination was Lincoln Nebraska. Where they were honored with a great cookout, drinks, and a place to stay thanks to an AWESOME Rat Rod couple. When the morning came they were back on the road.

Plans were to visit a friend on their way through Southwestern Kansas but after a few mishaps, that visit turned into an over night stay. Two of the Rats in the pack needed some parts and tinkering with. Like any Rat Rod builder can relate to. Fortunately this friend owned a salvage yard. Once they had what was needed, they patched up their Rat Rods in no time and were back on the ROAD TO SEMA. On this day Jeramie was chosen to lead the pack. With him leading the pack everyone's ride was getting a run for it's money.

Because knowing Jeramie, he would be HAULING ASS!!!

Later that night not far into Arizona they met up with more of our "Rat Rod Family"! They were joining them all for the Road to SEMA adventure. This was a family from New Mexico that had three well built rats. Now there was eleven of them in seven road worthy Rat Rods.

The following day they all jumped on the ROAD TO SEMA cruising down Hwy 40 doing about 80 mph. heading for their next stop, Laughlin Nevada. When all of a sudden the old bus in the pack quickly pulls off on the shoulder of the road. The front wheel bearings went out and ruined the spindle in the process. Like most but not all, this old bus was not on it's original frame. THANK GOD! It was transplanted to a 90's Chevy one ton chassis and there just happened to be a salvage yard a couple miles down the road.

They had everything needed to get the bus back up and rolling. As the day was coming to a end they all got rooms at the Pioneer Hotel and Casino.

Just their luck…. they stumbled upon a car show a few blocks away. After checking it out they went back to the Pioneer and enjoyed beverages and each others company.

When they woke in the morning. Everyone was excited, it was the last leg on the ROAD TO SEMA! Next stop Las Vegas Nevada.

This part of the drive was pretty uneventful. They hit the town running. And after negotiating a place for them all to park as a group. The hotel offered to open a fenced in guarded area for them. Mainly because all the Rat Rods made everyone’s car alarms go off at the hotel ! LOL The parking worked out well in everyone's favor as the parking lot area became the night time hang out spot while in Vegas for all Rat Rod family that made it. Even a few locals would swing by to see what all the fuss was about.

To hear Jeramie tell people what happened on the first evening in Vegas was exciting. And is just as special to me. .

‘All the Rat Rods had loaded up and went to the HellKat Racers Trunk or Treat car show. A huge Halloween event at a local mall.

And as always they were welcomed with open arms. Everyone was just amazed that they all DROVE so far. ‘ They were excited to be at the show. Checking out all the amazing cars, visiting with friends. And as Jeramie would tell it....

"Along with meeting all the amazing people that night. One in particular".

As Jeramie & Josh were wandering around aimlessly in awe of everything there. They got sucked into a conversation with a guy that had a mind blowing early sedan, with a blown 440ci engine.

Just as he was about to start it up for them, Jeramie heard his name being called from the stage.

OMG!!! WHAT DO I DO!?!?!? was his first thought. So off he ran towards the stage, that seemed to be a mile away. When he made it through the lines of vehicles and towards the stage. He was asked to come up on the stage.

Ummmm ok......as he looked concerned.

Come to find out the Iowa chapter of the HellKat Races chose his 1946 Chevy Gasser Rat Rod truck as there show pick.

He was blown away!!

Never did he expect such a great honor among such a great group of vehicles, and in Vegas of all places!

So as he stood there telling everyone about where he and Josh were from. Talking about going to SEMA with the adventures and dreams that have come true.

Jeramie also invited everyone to come autograph the custom barrel in the back of his Rat Rod that he was caring around

the country with the from the Rats To Riches show in Ft Smith AR. (Trust me that barrel is a whole other story in it's self.)

Now of course Jeramie is feeling honored and thrilled with his accomplishments and trophy. And outstanding highlights from this trip, that will lead to many more friendships and opportunities as well. While gathering with the group of Rat Rod road warriors and mingling as the event was winding down. They would tell it like this..... 'Some gal yells out CRAB WHO!!' While standing in front of 20 Rat Rods in Las Vegas!!!

We all know if you've been around Rat Rods for any amount of time at all. Most have met Crab Man or at least know who he is.

'Now with all of us hearing Crab Who!! We all turned around and there stood this sassy southern bell. Stefanie Lea... with a camera hanging around her neck and a huge smile on her face. You have to understand, this was the first time any of us have met her' he says. 'You can just tell she was a Rat Rod queen.' (That part cracks me up, xo) 'She walked right into our circle and was welcome to stay.' Says Jeramie and Josh as they tell this story in Mississippi almost a year later..

I was then honored by Jeramie as he asked me to sign the barrel.

As we all stood around that Gasser Rat Rod that night, we spent the rest of the evening cutting up and talking about mutual friends from our Rat Rod family. We traded stories that we both have heard from other family members. It was amazing we had not crossed paths before this point after having so much in common.

We all had something positive to say on this evening not feeling like I was 1800 miles from home and alone anymore. I knew I was standing among life long friends.

Jeramie tells it a little differently of course...

"As she worked her way around the group, checking out all the Rat Rods. Pointing out all the unique feature's on each of them.

Wanting to hear all of our story's behind our builds. Knowing details unlike no other girl here. Telling us about her own Rat Rod knowledge and adventures. We all knew a new friendship was born. Mainly because she was the real deal'!

So.. as we pulled away from the Atomic Blast leaving Mississippi in the rear view mirror. I'm leaving with many more knee slapping stories to share with friends I have not met yet.

Knowing the journey for us all will be a long one before we meet again, in a parking lot, in Las Vegas under the neon lights.

Till then my friends we all wish you guys the best of luck on the ROAD TO SEMA 2017.

I look forward to many more laughs and memories as I get to see my friends Jeramie and Josh along with the Flammin' 8 Speed Shop team. Drive a built not bought true Rat Rod onto the SEMA floor.

This is one of those you just have to see in person to understand the craftsmanship that went into this build. This was also Sean and his wife's first trip to the Atomic Blast. Driving over 8 hours to make it to the show! And one of the most humbled and grateful fella’s you'll ever met! Well done Sir!!

Best Motor Club pick was a in a... Model A Sedan. With a small block Chevy engine. It had a WILD twin turbo EFI set up. With tons of aluminum tubing. Built by hand in his own garage. Built not Bought..as they say!

One of my most exciting hidden treasures I have in my collection now is my, 1965 Red Volkswagen. Also known as a Beetle Bug, Punch Buggy or just plan Bug to some. The Volkswagen in other countries. For example, in France is known as the Coccinelle (French for ladybug).

The need for this kind of car, and its functional objectives, was formulated by the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, in the early 30's.He wanted a cheap, simple car for his country's new road network.

Ferdinand Porsche was asked in 1934 to design and build it to suite the peoples need. Porsche and his team took over 4 years to finalize the design. The result was one of the first rear-engined cars since the Brass Era. The Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made. The largest change to date for the Beetle was in 1965. Some body stampings were revised, which allowed for significantly larger windows. The windshield was now slightly curved, rather than flat. The result was a more open, airy a modern look they called it. However the standard model continued to use the old teardrop style to the end of the 1965 model run.

Leaving the big round headlights to become a trade mark for this years style.

After getting my little bug home, she needed some work to become road worthy. I had a box of "extra" parts given to me from the seller, but I had very little knowledge of my new toy and I found myself searching the internet for any helpful information. Someone that could help me understand what I have gotten myself in to.

That is when I started hearing about a graveyard of Volkswagens.

The story was, that at one time this man had a variety of over 1,600 Volkswagens at his shop.

WHAT?!?!? I have to find this mystical place. With only knowing the area this so called graveyard was located in. I went to the internet on a hunt. After running through several dealership and items for sale. I was able to find one tiny article on a place they call "Jim VW Air-cooled" located in Alabama. After digging a little harder, I decided this had to be him.

Several phone calls and emails later. I heard from Jim himself, Jim Connell to be excite. Learning he has been in business for himself as well as working on Volkswagens since 1973. Hundreds of restorations and over 1,000 engines rebuilt at his shop.

Jim spoke about these vehicles with a passion in his voice like I have seen in other car enthusiasts. I just knew I had found my guy!

I loaded up the "extra" parts and goodies that came with my very own Beetle and headed his way. I found him on top of a mountain about 30 minutes outside Birmingham. As I winded my way around the mountain I reached the top driving along a rough dirt road. And there it was, a tiny cluttered shop, perched on the side of this mountain.

Jim was a kind, soft spoken, humble man, and welcomed me into his shop, and onto his land where I find the graveyard I have heard so much about.

As Jim walks with me he tells me stories behind some of the cars buried on the side of that mountain. He told me that at one point and time he had over 1,800 different Volkswagens on his property.

Everything from the buses, to a bug made for racing in the dirt with a rusted roll cage. (aka Dune Buggies) He was full of knowledge on every make and model ever known to in the Volkswagen world.

Now he is down to a little over 300 Volkswagens on site. Most are in the graveyard for parts used for people like me, as well as for projects he has lined up in the shop. He’s still cranking out motors for people from all over the southeast.

After Jim showed me around his graveyard. He showed me his private office that displays some of his favorite Volkswagen keep sakes. Magnets, a hand made tissue box holder that look like a VW Bus, a wooden VW Beetle someone made for him from church. And some pictures of his prized Volkswagens that has been at his shop.

As I am looking around I noticed a picture on the wall, and the back ground of this picture was one I knew. I asked a little more about the beetle bug picture with the raised roll cage on. It was sitting on a dirt track starting / finish line. He really looked surprised that I even noticed it.

I went on to ask him if that was taken at the Brompton Race track?, not far from his shop. That track is now covered in kudzu with only a faint outline of where the track once was. That's when we both knew we had a connection and our friendship was born!

Jim then tells me about the years he raced on that track and others. The car in the picture, painted yellow with red numbers on

the doors, he raced during the 70's and into the early 80'. He raced at several of the same dirt tracks my dad has raced at himself.

Jim tell me a story with pride in his voice, " he won 7 out of 10 Championships while he was running in the 40 HP class; working up to the Unlimited class. Then he said, “I've had a lot of personal fun cars. Wish I still had them all.�

As I leave that mountain top and head home, I'm leaving with more then just the parts I needed. I leave with more knowledge about my new little toy. I met another person that has a passion about something that I urn to hear about.

Meeting this legend was a great field trip for me. I get to call him my friend now...Jim my bug guy!

By: Rooster McGee Hello everybody its the rooster back to tell u a story!!! So I've been a biker all my life...always lived by the code Never leave a fellow biker alone.. I have never left a fellow biker behind no matter what... even the ones I didn't know....

Several years ago, and I mean several, there was a guy and his old lady broke down at the bottom of rooster ridge with a flat tire. His name was Bobby and he was from the beach..he had a flat.. I ask bobby if I could help he said that would be great...so I went and got my trailer, loaded his bike and headed to the garage!!

We took off the back wheel and found out he needed a new tube....only problem was we couldn't find one on a Sunday!! I actually had a tube but the valve stem was in the wrong place.

The rooster made it work and we put it back on and that man tried to pay me! I said oh no bro!

You help someone and pay it forward and he said he would.

A few years later my son was born and I kinda’ stopped riding the 20,000 miles a year that I had grown accustomed to!! My boy is 11 years old now and I find myself longing to beat the pavement and get back out in the wind!

Its a great stress reliever for me and where I do my best song writing...this past Thursday was the 1st bike night for me in 11 years...I felt good just me and my old bike...I met up with some bros of mine and we left that first place wide open. The guy I was following lit out on the back wheel! I stuck right with him just like I hadn't missed a beat!!

We were on a back road and it was very dark...and bam!! it happened, I hit a pot hole 4 ft wide and 10 inches deep...bam I looked like Evil Kneville at Ceasers Palace.

Just picture the rooster holding on for dear life!!

The lesson hear is always keep 2 hands on the bars at night when its dark all kinds of things can go wrong!

Well I guess I'm a biker! a ratrodder! A lineman!

A gun owner! A crazyman! An American patriot!!

So live by a code and never break it! Swear an oath to your country! This is America the greatest country in the world!!!
