“Take control of your thought life. Every morning when you wake up, declare, “This is going to be a great day, I’m excited about my future, I have the favor of God, and no weapon formed against me will prosper. I am strong. I am healthy. I am blessed.” Every time you do that, you’re being filled back up.” …… Joel Osteen

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo February already? As I remember it was only a month or so ago all of us were getting ready for Christmas. Here it is time to finish Februarys layout of the magazine already. As usual I’m the last to put my comments down on paper. But I’d like to start out by thanking everyone who takes the time to read this magazine. I enjoy the input I get from the writers and subscribers and look forward to each new month. Over the last twenty plus years we have seen a huge growth in vehicle events taking place along the Gulf Coast. Gulf Coast MotorSports is just one mans dream of letting folks know what is going on along the Gulf Coast. And he has had a lot of help along the way. I encourage you to send in updates about your adventures or club events. Somehow when I collect all the different columns & e-mails from every one and start arranging them, the magazine takes on a theme. This month it seems that the theme is looking back but moving forward.. I am full of optimism as I look forward to the show season. Is it possible now that the political season is over we can get back to being car guys again and just enjoy all the events. More people who enjoy the car culture are finding their way to our warm weather, some even moving here after retirement. Car/Truck/Motorcycle clubs and like minded people like to gather together whenever the opportunities arises. Remember every show is important to the people who are putting it on and proceeds are usually given to a charitable cause. So fire-up your ride and join a Cruise-in, Car Show, or dinner-run listed in the magazine. Remember whether local or caravanning to events out of your zip code, you are making some great memories and looking forward at the same time…

Jimbo, Wow the New Year has rolled in like a blown big block hot rod in 5th gear with the speedometer climbing faster towards the big new show of the year. The Spring Emerald Coast Cruizin' to be held March 8-11, 2017 in Panama City Beach, Florida is going to blow you away. Look for all new entertainment to hit the stage on Friday that should have the house rocking and lighters in the night air just like concerts of decades past. The Georgia Clay Band will be on stage Friday & Saturday before lunch and after lunch with some good old southern rock mixed with some other crowd favorites. But we are keeping real quiet right now and will really surprise you with the bands and music to be played late afternoon on Friday then Friday night. …….. Rakes

"Chicken Willie" and his "CHICK MAGNET" If you know "Chicken Willie" Smith, it is probably from the NSRA, as the Mississippi State Representative. Now Chicken is widely known throughout the Street Rod community for being one of the "OLD SCHOOL" guys that just loves to sport around from show to show in his ‘58 Chevy convertible. If you ask him about it, you had better have a great deal of time to hear him expound on the history of the car and how much effort he has put into getting this baby blue land cruiser back up and on the road. To say he is proud, as he should be, is an understatement. The old girl really looks great and runs even better. What you have not heard, is just what a "Chick Magnet", this old car seemed to have been back in the day. Now in a close circle of friends he might tell of a story from long ago that includes something about an old cow in a pasture, but not to break any trust, you will have to get him to tell this one. This past fall we were attending the "Klassy Cruisers" event in Crossett, Arkansas when my wife had heard of all the hooplah with the car and what a ladies man he was back in the day. She had a brilliant "IDEA", and knew that "Chicken" was out of pocket and nowhere to be found. She laid her plan into action, gathered all the ladies she could find and just loaded the old 58 up! It was so full that when "Chicken" came from wherever it was he was hiding at the time back to the parking lot. Well, you can just imagine his surprise to see his "Chick Magnet", brimming to overflow. He could not even get into his own car to drive off with his "Brood"! The best he could do was to "PERCH" on the hood for a photo op. So, to one of the last "Old Southern Gentlemen", that I have the pleasure to know, always has a smile to greet you, a hug for the ladies, a pleasant and out going personality, this one is for you "Chicken". OH Yea, and for your BROOD! Mike Summerlin - MSRA Yeah, Ol’ “Chicken” is all smiles, showin’ off his prized 58 Henhouse … “not too bad for an ol’ rooster Chicken”…

This is a photo from when I joined the NSRA in 2003. NSRA representatives Kenny Angelo, “Chicken Willie” Smith and Larry Teal, would like to thank Southern Who and Singing River Street Rod Clubs, and Street Dreams for their wonderful Southern hospitality. Gulf Coast MotorSports is proud to be a member of the National Street Rod Association. … jimbo Photo: Jeff Westfall

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage February 2017 By: Michael Lachaussee The car show and cruise in season is heating up once again in the good old south. I like to tell folks I meet from up north, you know those folk from any where above interstate 20, that we only have two seasons, hot and not so hot. Other areas of the country usually struggle with snow , ice, freezing rain, and at times very cold conditions. While many times we run around here in flip flops shorts and tee shirts during our not so hot season. By the time you read this many will have attended our first rod run of the season. Yes in the middle of January many of us will head out and either be real cold or just right as we venture to the Southern Who's Winter Rod Run. Its always a blast for me to see new folks and new projects that roll out to these early events as well. Lots of things happen down here during the time while others are enduring winters cold. This year the Mardi Gras season kicks off as usual on the evening of Jan. 6th and culminates on Fat Tuesday Feb. 28th. Being an old New Orleans kid growing up there I had seen all the parades I had wanted too. The crowds and the traffic no longer holds its same appeal to me as when I was a youngster. However there is one parade in Lacombe La. I do like to attend from time to time the Krewe of Skunks have a blast on Mardi Gras day. I like this one for one reason alone, I get to hang out with some old motorcycle friends and tell stories and laugh and have a good time eating barbque and other wonderful foods that lots of people bring to share. We go out and watch the parade and then give anything we catch to all the little ones that show up. It really is a Family friendly parade and still a small town event. Things in the carriage house I hope will be heating up as well. With a little luck and some spring time weather, the peasants and I hope to get some paint on Chases Big Truck project, and with some work we may get to take it for a spin around the neighborhood. Of course I will have to complete a new project my wife (The Queen) has had me take on. We will be doing a complete bathroom overhaul, this project has already taken a huge effort since the demolition has begun the day after Christmas. This could be somewhat problematic for the Big Truck projects progress too. Happy Valentines Day to you all and Happy Mardi Gras too, Till next time from the Carriage House,

The Hardee's Old Car enthusiast January 2017 breakfast had great weather and a good turnout. Areas from Pascagoula, Gautier, Alabama and Daisy Vestry (!) and Lucedale were represented with vintage cars, trucks, hot rods and some great looking Corvettes. The two cars featured here are from owned by local George County residents. Both of these vehicles are for sale so if you are interested in getting involved in vintage cars, here's your chance.

This beautiful turquoise and white '55 Oldsmobile Rocket is owned by Kenneth Mallette. He purchased this beauty two years ago from the original owner family in Sumrall, MS. This car has less than 90,000 original miles and is propelled by an original Rocket engine. The car is stock and has a great interior.

Gizmo

The fast and furious red '69 Road Runner is owned and operated by Steve. Steve purchased this Road Runner at Moultrie, Ga. Swap Meet two years ago. It's a really bad sounding, good looking car. The Hardee's breakfast is held every second Friday of each month at Hardee's in Lucedale, MS beginning around 8 a.m. All are welcome with or without a vehicle. If you have a car that you want to share, please bring it out so all can enjoy. See you in February.

Hello MotorSports Magazine, Greetings from sunny California! In 2013 I moved from the Arizona mountains to the Bay Area. Since the move, I put modeling on the side and have been focusing on school and family. I am currently enrolled in college working towards a BS in Nutrition. I’ve always been interested in health, but I have found a real passion for learning about the healing powers of a whole foods plant based diet. In addition to studying, I am also enrolled in other certificate programs. On February 3rd, I will receiving a Plant-Based Professional Cooking Certificate from Rouxbe Cooking School. At the end of March, I will have completed the Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate from the T. Collin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies through Cornell University. Both programs have been very rewarding. With all of the knowledge I’ve been acquiring, I have been micro-blogging through Facebook and Instagram under my new project @WearBlackEatGreen . I hope to inspire others to cook and prepare their own healthy meals for longer, healthier life. My family is as busy as ever... with 3 kids in soccer, we travel every weekend. Over Christmas we took a road trip back to Williams, Arizona to see my family. We got to drive some of Route 66 through Needles and Kingman. It was fun to see some of the locations that I had done photo shoots at. The pink Crown Vic is still parked outside of Twisters in Williams. It was nice to reminisce. Thanks for catching up with me! Much love

The NSRA have planned an exciting year ahead, with 9 Divisional Events and the 48th Street Rod Nationals. There are 40 awards given at each of the 9 divisional events, also there is $70,000 of super prizes merchandise given at each event. The "Granddaddy" prize occurs every Saturday afternoon at the Street Rod Nationals for the past 36 years. One lucky registered participant drives home a brand new state of the art Street Rod. We hope 2017 finds you at a NSRA Event. Last year the Streetkhana was introduced at Mid America and the Street Rod Nationals and was a big hit at both events. For 2017 the Streetkhana is being added to Southeast and South Event. This is the same as the auto cross at CTC event. You can ride in a car with the pro drivers or you can your Hot Rod thru the course. You can drive at what ever speed you feel comfortable with. Also it is lots of fun to watch. 2017 Fellow pages, It is time to sign up if you want your name in the book. Call me with you NSRA number and phone number and I will get it in there. The deadline is Feb. 24th so Call Donna 228 332-3006.This book is sent out free to every member of the NSRA. The names in this book are not carried over from the last year. The members names that are listed are by States and Towns. When traveling if you have any trouble you always have a friend with you. The people volunteer their names will be ready to help a fellow enthusiast in need. One more thing that I think is very important is what the NSRA does for us to keep our Hot Rods on the roads. A recruiting effort initiated an impressive number of lawmakers into the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus with over 90 new members listed during the year. The group is almost 800 members. These are all good reasons to join the NSRA. Thank You,

Donna 10

The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the o r g a n iza t io n d o in g th e s a f e t y inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. THE LONG JOURNEY.. It all began on a hot beautiful July day in 1995 when Jim, riding his Harley on I-10 in north Biloxi was heading to meet friends for breakfast. After the devastating phone call I received at work I found Jim in Biloxi Regional Hospital with a compound fracture of the left leg. He had been hit! A fear I always had in the back of my mind. Doctors told me that they were going to try very hard to save his leg but he would be “out of commission” for some time….. After over a week in the hospital, skin grafts and lots of prayers, we got him home but quickly found out his “spare time” was getting the best of him. For those of you that know Jim also know the brain is never at ease……he is constantly coming up with an idea, invention or suggestion…..you get the idea! During a visit with a good friend Giff Ormes, they brain-stormed about printing a newspaper or “news letter” as Jim called it and voila! GULF COAST MOTORSPORTS magazine was born. Now she did not start out that way. Jim was big into the Harley scene so she was originally called THE HARLEY TIMES. They pounded the pavement and visited many, many, many businesses to get her off the ground. (Jim and Giff were at the 1st meeting to kick off Cruising the Coast and I am proud to say they had an influence on its birth.) Many turned him away or totally ignored his salesmanship but after many months and years of hard work, Jim evolved the Harley Times in the current Motorsports many of you read today. He has a pretty tough exterior so the word “no” is not one he accepts gracefully. I won’t say it has been easy for me either. There have been many social events, lunches, dinners and trips I missed or went “solo” because of the printed lady. I have fussed and cussed more than once listening to his excuses because of deadlines or last minute articles he had to finish. Jim has long since sold the Harley and is the proud owner of a 1929 Ford which many of you see on the street with the infamous “Gulf Coast Motorsports” logo and she shines like the New Orleans saints in black and gold. Stop by and say hello when you see him…he’s a talker and loves cars….. Gulf Coast Motorsports celebrated her 21st anniversary this past July. She has grown to cover many states in the USA and seems to have a pleasing personality with her many fans. That comment brings me to the following…. Yesterday my Jim received the honor of being chosen 2016 MISSISSIPPI STREET RODDER OF THE YEAR!!!!!!! It could not have been possible without the many, many loyal friends and fans who have supported Jim during the past 21 years……I am deeply grateful for your loyalty and support that you have given Jim thru the good, bad and ugly….. Giff, you have been a great supporter and I thank you for encouraging him from day one…. Jerry Cuevas for his nomination……Chick Willie with the NSRA…..JR Roberts and The Coast Cruizers car club….The Misfits Car club……Red Creek Classics Car Club… the many advertisers and businesses…...so many I can’t begin to name them all but each and every one of you know who you are and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Jim, I love you and I am so proud to be sleeping with the 2016 MISSISSIPPI STREET RODDER OF THE YEAR! Congratulations and wear the jacket well and proud……you deserve it!!!! Nancy

It is amazing how life can always turn on a dime. I was having a hard time deciding what to write about for this column for February. It’s winter time and not much going on car show wise. Just when I had almost given up on a subject to write about, I found out Jimbo Perkins had won the MS Street Rodder of the Year award from the NSRA and he was totally unaware he was getting this prestigious honor. I had to be there to catch it. I got up at 5:30 Saturday morning to get ready to drive to Jackson, about a two and a half hour drive from the Mississippi Coast. After waking up and getting ready I got out of the house about 6:15. The NSRA Annual Planning Meeting for all car clubs and promoters was to begin at 10:00. I stopped in Wiggins and got breakfast, topped off the tank and got back on the road. I arrived at the Holiday Inn hotel there in Pearl at Trustmark Park next to where the Jackson Braves play and the big Bass Pro Shop is located. Most all the car clubs were represented, I got some coffee and said my hellos to everyone I knew. Everyone there from the Coast group knew Jimbo was getting the award.

Raymond Montgomery, from the Memphis Street Rods. Next it was time for The NSRA MS Street Rodder of the Year Award. I had my camera ready to catch Jimbo’s reaction to getting this incredible award, but Chicken Willie keep hee-hawing around about announcing it and I had to act like I was shooting something else. He got me a couple more times before he actually spit it out. Here are the reaction photos of Jimbo learning he had won the award. Priceless!

Coast Group photo Luckily, I had only known for a few days to keep secret that Jimbo had won. We also discussed the fact that Jimbo didn’t have a clue. I had told Jimbo I was there for a story for my column, photos and to pass out flyers for the Hot Rod Show, which I did. JR and Sharon said they were going to represent the Coast Cruizers and stop by some recovered architectural recovery store in Jackson, Jimbo’s wife Nancy wanted to go there too, so she had tagged along. Jerry Cuevas and Margie Cuevas had to be there along with Donna and Floyd Holland. Everyone had a good cover, reason to be there. The first part of the meeting was to go through every month of the year starting with January and get all the car shows listed on the calendar. That took a while. Then it was time for lunch. After Lunch it was time for the awards. First was the Hall of Fame Award, given to the NSRA member that had given a lot over a lifetime to the organization. This year’s winner was Raymond Montgomery, from the Memphis Street Rods.

FEBRUARY 2017

Jimbo was floored. He had no idea he was going to win this award and that’s the best way to win such an award. You might think you deserve to win an award like this a few years, then you don’t and then you don’t even think about it for a few years and then bam…it happens. That’s really the best way to receive an award like MS Street Rodder of the Year. Jimbo got the plaque, a jacket (which he probably slept in) and a shirt. I’ve known Jimbo for about 10 years now, been a good friend, I heard all the stories about the years before I knew him, some more than once. But I can say with confidence, nobody has done more for the car culture in South MS… day in and day out, week end and week out, month end and month out or year end and year out over the last two decades than Jimbo Perkins. Not a close second to him.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

I don’t say those words lightly or without witnessing of what I speak. I cannot imagine what the classic car culture would have looked like in South MS without Jimbo Perkins and Gulf Coast Motorsports Magazine. Jimbo was even at the very first meeting for a new show called Cruisin The Coast. We have had some great winners of the MS Street Rodder of the Year Award, but this one was long overdue. Join me in congratulating Jimbo Perkins!

the Rooster and sunshine Today is a great day for the Rooster. I'm almost positive that my life is going to be spectactulur from here on out in 2017. So I thought I would write a short, but sweet motto of the Rooster. The Rooster never quits, like the sun, the Rooster never gives up. Like the sun the Rooster is defiantly on fire... seriously the sun shining on my life is wonderful. Hard work and determination always pays off in the long run. So when things aren't going the way you would like just look at the sun and thank God in heaven that it is still working. Burning, turning, floating, and keeping us going. Thank you God, the sun feels good!!!! and so do I!! There were also a good many past MS Street Rodders of the Year honorees in attendance. Back row starting on left is “Chicken” Willie Smith, Randy Wilson, T-Tommy Smith, Terry Ward, Jerry Cuevas, Front row starting on left Raymond Montgomery, Jerry James, Donna Holland, Robert “Rakes” Parrish, Jimbo Perkins

Getting up early and driving to Jackson was all worth it to see the look on Jimbo’s face, to witness his surprise, to hear the applause of his peers and to hear him talk with a lot of emotion about his journey. It’s the time of the year to get the final adjustments made in your garage to your Hot Rod and get ready to get out on the road and enjoy that 17 FOREVER state of mind. til next month…

It amazes me to see how many people out there go through life, doing nothing. Sitting, looking, waiting, trying to figure out what they are supposed to do next.. with my job, I see it out there. Knock knock on the door, and everybody is at home.. Everyday the Rooster works, works, works and works some more. I wish I could pass it along. Hey there friend would you like some of my get up and go?.. I have enough for at least a small army. Anyways I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm not tired, and I'm far from worn out and if I could find somethin’ to motivate the world I would be rich! “Get your motivation one dollar!! get your motivation one time deal just a dollar!!” Stop being lazy all it takes is a good kick in the butt and your off an running. I just think people should be doing something. especially while the sun is out!!! There has never and will never be a better feeling than the sun shinning down on all of us. FARMER MATH….. A farmer died leaving his 17 horses to his 3 sons. When his sons opened up the Will it read: My eldest son should get 1/2 (half) of total horses; My middle son should be given 1/3rd (one-third) of the total horses; My youngest son should be given 1/9th (one-ninth) of the total horses. As it's impossible to divide 17 into half or 17 by 3 or 17 by 9, the three sons started to fight with each other. So, they decided to go to a farmer friend who they considered quite smart, to see if he could work it out for them. The farmer friend read the Will patiently, and after giving due thought. He brought one of his own horses over and added it to the 17. That increased the total to 18 horses. Now, he divided the horses according to their father's will. Half of 18 = 9. So he gave the eldest son 9 horses. 1/3rd of 18 = 6. So he gave the middle son 6 horses. 1/9th of 18 = 2. So he gave the youngest son 2 horses. Now add up how many horses they have: Eldest son - - 9 Middle son - 6 Youngest son2 TOTAL = 17 Now this leaves one horse over, so the farmer friend takes his horse back to his farm...... Problem solved! (Scratch your head over how that was accomplished .... and let me know)

During a robbery in a small town near by, the bank robber shouted to everyone in the bank: "Don't move. The money belongs to the bank. Your life belongs to you." Everyone in the bank laid down quietly. This is called "Mind Changing Concept” Changing the conventional way of thinking. When a lady lay on the table provocatively, the robber shouted at her: "Please be civilized! This is a robbery and not a rape!" This is called "Being Professional” Focus only on what you are trained to do! When the bank robbers returned home, the younger robber (MBA-trained) told the older robber (who has only completed Year 6 in primary school): "Big brother, let's count how much we got." The older robber rebutted and said: "You are very stupid. There is so much money it will take us a long time to count. Tonight, the TV news will tell us how much we robbed from the bank!" This is called "Experience.” Nowadays, experience is more important than paper qualifications! After the robbers had left, the bank manager told the bank supervisor to call the police quickly. But the supervisor said to him: "Wait! Let us take out $10 million from the bank for ourselves and add it to the $70 million that we have previously embezzled from the bank”. This is called "Swim with the tide.” Converting an unfavorable situation to your advantage! The supervisor says: "It will be good if there is a robbery every month." This is called "Killing Boredom.” Personal Happiness is more important than your job. The next day, the TV news reported that $100 million was taken from the bank. The robbers counted and counted and counted, but they could only count $20 million. The robbers were very angry and complained: "We risked our lives and only took $20 million. The bank manager took $80 million with a snap of his fingers. It looks like it is better to be educated than to be a thief!" This is called "Knowledge is worth as much as gold!" The bank manager was smiling and happy because his losses in the share market are now covered by this robbery. This is called "Seizing the opportunity.” Daring to take risks! So who are the real robbers here?

What do you think about the statements that are thrown around about the Internet? Is it a totally new revolution? I am not here to argue with anyone, but there is a contradiction in thinking that shopping on the internet was something unavailable to us prior to the electronic revolution. I was a child in the 1940’s. It is true we did not have computers then. We didn’t even have television! What was possible, though, was to have clothes delivered right to our homes. Heck, we could even have homes delivered to our homes! One could live in a remote location and still have deliveries. No, it wasn’t “Amazon”, and your purchases did not arrive the next day, but it was possible to stay at home and order your clothes, your tools, or your bicycle. Yes, good old catalog shopping was available. In 1872, Aaron Montgomery Ward, of Chicago, produced a mailorder catalog for his Montgomery Ward mail order business. By buying goods and then reselling them directly to customers, he cut out the middle man and was able to drastically lower prices. His first catalog (spelled catalogue then) was a single sheet of paper with a price list. There were no glossy photos, or even representations of the products. The paper was simply a list of the products, their prices, and ordering instructions. Montgomery Ward identified a market of merchant wary farmers throughout the Midwest. Within 20 years, this one piece of paper grew into a 540 page catalog of over 20,000 items. The super thick book could be used as a doorstop when not perused. Between the years of 1921 to 1931 Ward sold prefabricated kit houses by mail order under the name of Wardway Homes. You name it, and it was probably sold in a catalog. There was a bountiful supply of goods available from this source. Many other retailers jumped into the concept and soon there were catalogs for nearly everything. Goods such as furniture, carpet, wallpaper, men’s suits, women’s dresses, hats, shoes, typewriters, paint, tires, and appliances were available by mail order. Yes cars were available, too! (You thought I had forgotten this was a motorsports magazine, didn’t you?). The reason I gave you the above information was as background. Some of my fondest memories revolve around lying on the floor with a stack of catalogs. I get teary-eyed just remembering the smell of the catalogs. The day a new catalog arrived was a day of celebration for me. Time to get out a crayon and circle all the things I wanted. I could not afford anything, but it was sure wonderful to dream that I could. I would imagine the possibilities of each item I wanted. It was great fun. I would devour the bicycle catalogs and imagine myself with each different model. My friends would certainly be jealous of me if I could ever have one of these magnificent, chrome fender and highly

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

accessorized bicycles. The shiny carriers, the dual headlights, tail lights, and white wall tires, would surely make me popular. I would study the ones I might be able to afford if I saved my money, and dreamed about the ones that were the most expensive. There was a time when a well-dressed bicycle could be purchased for $79.95, but that was a fortune back then.

Looking at the go carts in the catalogs would elicit daydreams of racing one of these shiny marvels of engineering. Having a mini-bike would surely make me a big man on campus! Perhaps a motorcycle would make women swoon for me. Ah, the things I dreamed about in my head as I turned the pages of the catalogs and wished. I remember that catalogs were called wish books. We could get together at school and talk about the things we would buy if we had the money.

Remember when the catalogs would come from auto parts companies? “Oh, wouldn’t my parents’ car look cool if I put these lake pipes on it?” I would say to myself. Or, “these lowering kits, would be perfect to give the family ride a raked, drag, or slammed look!” “Even the 1961 Corvair station wagon would look cool and fast if I could customize it properly”, I would tell myself. “Maybe I could just start with some curb feelers, working my way up to custom wheels and a trombone exhaust system.” These were all terms a teenager could learn from catalogs, and if he couldn’t buy the items, he could at least talk about them as though he had firsthand knowledge. My knowledge of new styles, products, and innovations came mostly from these bastions of knowledge, the catalog. I hope this article brought back fond memories for you. I know it did for me. Uncle Ezra says: “Look back only with gratitude. The happy moments created memories and the sad moments created character.”

North Florida car shows have been a slow start for 2017 rain and cold no shows. I went down to Central Florida and the rain followed me to the next show. This time I preloaded and made sure we visited some trucks. Rain or shine these hardcore truckers came out for the first real show of the year. Trucks, Trucks, Trucks showed everything from Mud trucks, antiques, to custom exotic car haulers. These extremely unique trucks are all top of the line rigs. Not one truck failed to display a top notch ride any car or truck lover would stop in their tracks to check out. Under the beautiful old oaks of Trinity Christian Academy. The truckers braved the off and on again rain till the awards came down sending truckers to their local Saturday night cruises around Florida.

s we pulled into Memphis you could smell Bar B Q in the air. And you can hear the blues with every step we took along Beale street. The sounds just pouring out of every building along the way was nothing short of what I was hoping for. At the corner where B.B. King and The Blues City CafĂŠ sits, is where the journey started on this rainy cold night. From Stefanie Lea one blues player to the next along the stretch of buildings. You start to see the history and the passion for the music this town has. Every stop along the way was like a museum, if you will. All the walls were full of things that remind you of the history within the city limits. The vibe of the blues not only fill the air in these type of places and things. But it fills your soul as well. Streets are now aglow from the neon lights hitting the rain puddles. We are ending our evening at Rum Boogie CafĂŠ. This two story building caught our attention with the sounds from Jeff Jensen and his band pouring into the streets and grabbing us. We pulled up a bar stool and ordered a drink. Looking around this amazing spot was nothing like the others. Guitars lined the walls even hanging from the ceilings. A spiral staircase was in the middle of the building with dollar bills from all over the world signed by people just like us. Allowing us to leave a mark of our own on the this place. This evening was truly a relaxing evening to enjoy food, music and LIFE. As we strolled back for a good nights rest, knowing what the morning has in store for us, I could only dream of all the people that has spoken of the one place I was about to walk into. The Birthplace of Rock 'N' Roll.... SUN STUDIOS!! 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee is where I find myself in overdrive with excitement this morning. At a small building sitting on the corner of this busy street. You can not miss it! A huge guitar is hanging from the side of the building, and the yellow Sun Studio logo is on the side of this bricked two story land mark. This was something I longed to due, to step into and breathe in all the history it has to offer us. This is the place where dreams came true for so many musicians This recording studio opened its doors on January 3, 1950. by rock-and-roll pioneer Sam Phillips. Reputedly the first rock and roll single, Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats' "Rocket 88" was recorded there in 1951 by Ike Turner on keyboards. (WHO KNEW? I never have heard that, until I was able to take this hour long tour in a time machine full of everything I LOVE!) This is what lead the studio to claim status as "The Birthplace of Rock & Roll". Rock and roll, country music, and rockabilly artists, including B.B. King, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis, recorded in this building I'm standing in throughout the mid-tolate 1950s. Learning so much just from the little time that I was able to stand on the same tiles as the legends themselves once stood. Hearing the history, learning what talent once stood here with only a dream and hopes to become what they all longed for in life. Left me wanting more! Just few steps down a narrow stair case, to what was the" X" on the floor. Was where I found much more then I ever dreamed of myself! I found myself in the middle of this musky room filled with every musical instrument you could want, times two. A working recording studio to my left, this little house of legends is still a working and operating recording studio today. In the past few years this recording studio even allowed some of my own dear friends dreams come true. Only allowing more history

for me to cherish within these walls as well. With a blink of a eye the tour guide told us to look down at the "X" marking the spot, where so many legends had stood. Then she pulled out a old microphone that was said to have been used by all of my heroes. To me it was as if I was the only person in the room at that point and time. My own special place in the world! With tears filling my eyes, we were able to hear some of the first recordings done in this very spot. Some that were taken by Sam Philips himself, a legend in his own right in my opinion. A master at seeing things differently, in a time where you were to see things only in black and white. Phillips' slogan for his studio was "We Record Anything, Anywhere, Anytime. He held an open door policy, allowing anybody to walk in and, for a small fee, record their own record. In 1969, Sam Phillips sold the label to Shelby Singleton. There was no recording-related or labelrelated activity again in the building until the September 1985. The Class of '55 recording sessions with Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, produced by Chips Moman. In 1987, the original building housing the Sun Records reopened by Gary Hardy as "Sun Studio". It was opened as a recording label and tourist attraction that has attracted many notable artists, such as U2, Def Leppard, Bonnie Raitt, and Ringo Starr. In July 2009, John Mellencamp recorded nine songs for his album No Better Than This at the studio. In 2011, Chris Isaak released "Beyond the Sun," a collection of songs recorded at Sun Studio. Most of which are cover versions of songs originally released on Sun Records. Sam Phillips passed away in 2003, he was born and raised in Florence, Alabama. As a child, he picked cotton in the fields with his parents alongside black laborers. It is said the experience of hearing workers singing in the fields left a big impression on young Sam and that says a lot about the sounds that I cherish from this old recording studio. Leaving me to think that without Sam Phillips what would the music industry have been like had he not opened Sun Studio? Of course I could go on for several pages on this one little spot located in Memphis, Tennessee that hold so much history. As well as on Sam Phillips and all he bought to us in his life time. Instead I leave you with my 5 star rating, of a place that legends where born and dreams came true. Add this little jewel to your bucket list guys and gals, its a must see! XoXo

Stefanie Lea OK, some of you by now know I was raised on dirt track racing. Every Saturday night hitting every track in the southeast with my family. A full night of stock car racing was just in our blood line. Little did I know about drag racing or GASSER racing. Until this past year, …. When I was introduced to Gasser racing. I was hearing things that were new to me and that sparked my interest and Ignited a fire within me to learn all I could about this sport. My mind was blown at all it takes to have a "period" correct Gasser Hot Rod. "Straight 8 axels"...what's that? "Jacked up” with suspension modifications? Help......, sounds like crazy talk to me. Then I saw one take off from the starting line. Hitting the light at just the right time. Pulling a 1950 Chevy, 4 feet off the ground,,, BLOWS MY MIND! How did they do that??? This left me wanting to learn all I could! These are things I have to know! So I started with the history of it all. The “gasser” name arose because these cars were drag raced in a “gasoline driven” class. As opposed to using racing fuels such as nitromethane or alcohol. I found out certain brands of cars are wellsuited to being modified into gassers. This includes names such as Willys, Anglia, Henry-J, Austin, Studebaker and of course, Chevrolet and Ford. Over the years, many of these cars have been turned into formidable racing machines on the strip and street. The “Gasser Wars” Era occurred during the mid to late 1960’s. However, with nostalgia drag racing now gaining in popularity, we are pleased to see more and more gassers on highways and drag strips. I wanted to speak to some of the "old school guys", that are just as excited to see it making a come back in the now generation. So I listened to stories from people like Billy Jack Ethridge from Meridian, Mississippi. Billy told me about the way a car is set up can make all the difference in the run it makes. It’s all about crossing the finish line with good numbers to back up your name and car. That was the same kind of pride as hitting a checker flag. These are things to be proud of and has been in his blood line also as far back as the early 60's. Billy Jack and his wife Gayle married for 50 years this March, have been racing together before they ever started a family. Gayle would race right along with the men back in the early days. Beating most of them due to the weight difference she had on them. Billy Jack spoke very proudly of is wife and her running with the men. Billy said that cutting 75lbs of weight in one of the Gassers, could also cut a 10th of a second off your time. Billy went on to say his 20 years old grandson Will Ethridge will be racing for car owner Glen Henderson in a 1957 Ford Gasser called Gun Smoke. And Billy Jack will be racing for car owner Jessie Holmes in his 1963 Falcon/ Mustang called Coon-Tang. Built as a tribute to Frank Gulsby of Pensacola, Florida by Bill Ziel and Jessie Holmes.

FEBRUARY 2017

All this just shows me that Billy Jack and Will share the same passion in what's now come full circle in his own family. When I reached out to Jessie Holmes of the Southern Outlaws to learn more about the up coming race on February 10th and 11th. He told me the Southern Outlaw Gasser Blow Out 5, at Emerald Coast Drag Way In Holt, Florida. Was a weekend full of fun for the whole family. With little to NO rules, other then to have good clean family fun. Jessie along with all the Southern Outlaws take pride in FAMLIY FUN! These Outlaws allow kids of all ages to pick a race car, climb aboard for a stroll down the track with a driver. There will be prizes from local sponsors to be given away through out the day. So make it down to Holt, Florida and see what the Southern Outlaws have to offer. Go by and say hello to Billy Jack, Gayle and Will Ethridge as you wish them luck on a good race. As well as give Jessie a pat on the back for all the hard work it takes to make this a weekend your kids might be talking about years from now, like I still talk about those dirt track night myself.

Stefanie Lea While at SEMA in Las Vegas, I was able to cover the International Rat Rod Build Off Competition. Rat Rods from the UK, Canadian and the U.S.A was part of this first annual build off at the 50th Anniversary of SEMA. While in Vegas I was able to met and make several new friend's. As well as finding several people that have the same passion for RAT RODS as I do. Like Jeramie Rosencranz, founder of Flamin' 8 Speed Shop from Menomonie, Wisconsin. Finding out he along with his friend Josh Ellsworth drove from Wisconsin with a tailor in tow, in a nice 1946 Chevy Rat Rod Gasser Truck. Showed me the respect this type of a builder has along with so many of the like minded people that I met on this journey. I found out the week after we left Las Vegas, that Jeramie has been invited to join the U.S.A. team for the International Rat Rod build off competition for SEMA the upcoming year. The excitement and joy I have for my friend Jeramie and his team, is like a proud mom if you will. This is what has bought me to this new column as we watch and document this build as it unfolds. As we watch and follow Flamin' 8 Speed Shop, Jeramie and his team build what will be one of team U.S.A.’s next entries into the International RATical Rod Build Off for SEMA 2017. (Yes, the Rat Rod name has been changed to RATical Rod! grrrr)

So as Jeramie and his team work to build what will arrive in Las Vegas in late October. We’ll get to watch the build unfold and hit the "Road to SEMA 2017". After speaking to Jeramie he tells me, it was not only a HUGE honor to be picked for this build off, representing team U.S.A, was something he was very proud to be apart of. As we all watch the Flamin' 8 Speed Shop build a full custom forced air big block 1959 Cadillac race car. And a Cummins powered 1955 Chevy cab over ramp bed hauler. Jeramie tells me "the goal is for it to look like a nostalgic race team from the early 60s." Jeramie found a rusty 1959 Cadillac that was saved from the crusher. (So sad most would say scrap is all it's good for. But he and his team have a vision to give it new life.) and will put it back on the road again. The 1955 Cab Over was random. Jeramie saw one sittin’ in a pasture on farm as he traveled through Kansas one day and had a vision. "I have to have one!" he tells me. Hours later when he arrived at a friends shop. They started making phone calls until they was able to find one. Along with a bunch of other retired 50’s and 60’s trucks from an old excavating company. The "Road to SEMA 2017" has now begun. Jeramie owner and founder of Flamin' 8 Speed Shop. "I'm very proud to not build your average Hot Rod or Rat Rod for local use. We build them to be driven EVERY WHERE. To make this build off even better we will drive BOTH vehicles from Wisconsin to SEMA 2017 in Las Vegas then load the Caddy on the 1955 Hauler for display at the show." He tells me with much pride and determination in his voice! So sit back and enjoy this build and progress through out the year for what we will call "Road To SEMA 2017"!

Retro-lingo By Candy Cocktail Happy February hep cats and cool kittens! This month I have compiled an 18-karat collection of vintage words and spiffy sayings from the past that everyone can enjoy. From trend-setting movies that were before their time, like Rebel Without a Cause and Untamed Youth, to 20th century classics like Grease, these films use retro slang that is still cool today! From The Outsiders' infamous "Stay Gold, Ponyboy" to my personal favorite, blonde bombshell Wanda Woodward in Cry-Baby saying, "Yeah, I'm just a bebop baby, and I don't take nothing from no one! See ya later, daddy-os. Have a cool Yule and a frantic First!" From drapes to squares, some words, such as bug (as to annoy), were popular in the baby boomer era, yet never went away. Some of you may have grown up during the 40s and 50s, so this article may be a walk down memory lane. While for others, it will be a fun look at an unfamiliar time that remains so unique, it even had its own distinct style and the language was full of retro slang! By: Ray Parrish Edd’s Drive-in has been an icon in my home town since 1953, slightly before I was born. It's changed very little over all of these years. I can remember as a little kid back in the 60's my family would go there and we would get supper, or just a great milkshake or ice cream cone. When I got my own car it became almost a daily stop for me. Edd’s became famous for their chili cheese burgers and that status hasn't changed yet. Edd’s has always been a good place to get a quick hot meal at an inexpensive price. People that grow up here and move away and then come back for a visit often make Edd’s their first stop. They always have great friendly service and consistent food. A chili cheese burger taste the same as it did 40-50 years ago and that comes from personal experience. I still eat there at least once a week. Edd’s is also know for their cancer fundraising. For several years now they have raised thousands of dollars to help in the fight against cancer. One of their popular fundraising items are refrigerator magnets. I was honored when the manager of Edd’s asked me to take a photo with some of our old cars out front for a new magnet for them to sell. This is the group of cars I enticed to come out today in spite of the horrible weather we were having. This group of cars represent vehicles from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's era. All of these cars often show up at Edd’s on a regular basis, mostly because they know the way so well. I want to personally thank all of the management and hundreds of workers that have made their way through this organization over the last 64 years. Pascagoula would be lost without you!!! Please cruise in soon and purchase your magnet! Edd’s Drive-in, 3834 Market St, Pascagoula, MS 39567

By: Rob Wise Go, Cat, Go Like any small town in 1955, find its fourway stop and for two bits you could order up a cheeseburger and a side of fried taters with some change to spare. If that four-way was around Peace and Liberty street in Canton, Mississippi you’ve been sittin across the counter from nineteen year old Lucille at DoBoys Diner. She was an eyeful to behold and if it were past five o’clock on any given night you may just get your eyes swollen shut for starring too long at Lucille, that was just about the time her boyfriend, former local high school football legend turned log-truck driver Johnnie Baker would wheel in to stable his filly for the night’s festivities. But that was a couple of hours from happening on Thursday the twentieth of October and the bells bolted to the swinging front doors were ringing out to Lucille and the fry cook at Do-Boys that a few stiff legs just strolled in and life for the red haired beauty smacking on a piece of juicy fruit was just about to get more interesting. “Where’d you boys like to sit?” she asked, a text book set-up for the hormonal hillbilly-boppers who were just pass’n through. “I’ll sit anywhere you ask me to gorgeous”, said Red the loudest of the trio of rebel rousers. There were three of them and they were hep-musicians that’d blown in on their way to play an opening gig at a juke joint super club just outside Jackson Tennessee the next day. Les Rude on stand-up base, Steve Kanter on skins and Mike Redinger strummin a Gretsch. His buddies just called him “Red”, he was the lead for the triad calling themselves “The Red Barron’s” and they believed they were on their way to havin it made in the shade. Lucille, looking less than impressed, “how about taking it some where’s else if you all are look’n for trouble?” “You got us all wrong dollface we’re just look’n to have some harmless fun.” “Well then what would you like to drink”, she asked? “Three cherry Coke’s dollface and a round of burgers and fries will do just fine.” on our destiny”, said Red, looking into her eye’s while the other two Baron’s fought back laughter. They knew Red was about to lay it on thick in a last ditch effort to capture her affection. “See me and my boy’s hear are a part of the soon to be discovered “Red Barron’s” and we are writing out the three songs that will keep us from being just the opening act for Sam Phillips’ traveling show tomorrow.” “Now you look like a woman with great taste and judging from your command with respect, I believe you could help us to pick out the best line-up to insure stardom tomorrow?” As she walked away from the table she glanced at the mirror and crack a grin back at Red, she wasn’t at all put off by his devilish charm, in fact she was playing up the wet rag act. A feline knows just how to play a tomcat and this little kittens tail was making Red howl like a werewolf inside. Thirty minutes later the Red Barron’s were cutting

through their juicy beef burgers like a chainsaw on a termite infested log. They sat at the table working their song bill for the gig when Lucille walked over with a smiled directed at Red. “Would you fellers like anything else to eat, we have some nice homemade desserts?” “No beautiful, what we’d like is your opinion Now as anybody who’s grown up in a small town knows, the grass across the county line grows greener but the grass across a Stateline is not only greener, it’s manicured and pedicured if you hitch your wagon to the right team of horses. Red had said two things that peaked Lucille’s interest; the first was the word stardom and the second was woman. Nobody had ever asked for her opinion outside of the daily specials at work and when you couple that with being called a bonafied woman! Red had set all the tumblers in an exact sequence, this safe was cracked. “You want my opinion on songs”, she said with muffled enthusiasm! “Yes darling, here’s a list of our titles, the first four are slow with the last three being more hoppedup.” Lucille looked over the song sheet on the table and settled on three titles but the last one caught her eye, “Steppin Out on Him”. “What’s that one about”, Lucille asked Red? “That’s one I’m about to write, it’s about a waitress who takes a chance on fate and leaves her small surroundings to run off and have a good time.” “Sounds like a hit” she replied let me get your total ready. Lucille turned around and headed to get their bill, when she returned she was wearing her coat and purse. “I’m all finished up on my shift, consider that meal my fare to tag along and see if that song make’s it tomorrow night, you fella’s have room for one more?” To that Red with a gesture of royalty offered his arm to her and pointed to a green Olds “98” out front replying, “join me upfront my lady, while these two goons ride in the back.”

The door to the diner rang shut and the four headed towards the custom ride, Lucille remarked if they were to make it in the big time they’d need a gimmick to sell a song about stepping out. She suggested the trio stop on their way out of town at the local favorite to pick up some threads, she knew just the place. Like clockwork, nearly thirty minutes later Lucille’s yesterday special, Johnnie Baker pulled into the diner. The door to his logging truck squeaked open as the size fourteen boots thumped the ground headed towards the door. “Lucy!” He called out as the door bells fell silent.

Another waitress came over to explain to Johnnie where she’d gone and quicker than a polecats tale can lift, he was headed towards the Tennessee line in a fit of rage. Meanwhile over at Gibbs Mercantile Store, the band had decided to listen to their newly appointed assistant and they were shopping for the one article of clothing that’d put them out front of all the rest. On display in the front store window were a pair of shoes that caught the eye of Lucille, nobody in such a sleepy small community had any use for such an impractical pair of suede leather shoes. Bright blue with white souls they made a mockery of the towns’ blue collar patrons passing through the front door at Gibbs so the manager was happy to see them walk out for less than the asking price. Red however wasn’t happy at first, his simple way of thought was obvious. “We ain’t The Blue Barron’s we need to find me a Red pair the blue ones would be bad luck!” In a town of less than thirty-five hundred you take what you can get and in the end Red relented to go blue remarking talent was his ticket to the big leagues no shoes, or even with the blue shoes he was going to make it. He went around to the trunk to fetch his guitar throwing the keys to Steve saying, “lay a patch Kantor daddy, I have a hit song to write before we take the stage tomorrow night!” They slung gravel headed towards the Stateline, Red and Lucille in the back working with different chord arrangements and writing down lyrics. Three hours and 250 miles later they had a hillbilly bop number that’d make even the Mayor of Squaresville jump, jive and wail. They rolled into the motel and piled up some Z’s till it was show time. The Red Barron’s took the stage that night and “Stepping Out on Him” had ‘em hoppin in the isles, but just as they stopped everyone began to chant, “Carl, Carl, Carl!” They’d mistakenly thought for a brief few minutes the mob was theirs, but make no mistake they were here tonight for one name and that was Carl Perkin’s. Red and the boys moved down front and out on the floor when Carl made his way in and started into “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” It was on the second chorus when Carl looked down, Red and Lucille were in the middle of a Lindy Hop twist, when the crowd parted by a massive arm and Johnnie, who’d pushed his way through, grabbed Red knocking him down to the floor, spitting in his face, he’d started cursing him all over the place. Finally, Johnnie began to lift his big boot to stomp on Reds shoes when all of a sudden Lucille yell’s out, “Honey get off the Blue Suede shoes, you can do anything but lay off those Blue Suede shoes!” Carl looked down at what was happening and then back at the band with a grin like a goat eating a pinecone. Carl was remembering something his buddy Johnny had said a week earlier about a song idea; Carl had passed it off but was beginning to get a good feeling for the right lyrics. Security was grabbing big ole Baker and pulling him off of Red, Lucille went running out after him through the door. Red regained consciousness and walked over to Lucille telling her, “look baby, it was fun but me and the boys are headed out for the next show. Take that big, over grown gorilla, back to Canton before he goes ape again.” Lucille recognized some thing’s are worth fighting for in life, and when you find someone who cares that much about you to chase after you; you shouldn’t just chase something that is nothing more than bright lights. The Red Barron’s never made it big, perhaps if the shoe were on the other foot who knows what would have happen? …Well, it's one for the money, Two for the show, Three to get ready, Now go, cat, go… -Carl Perkins

FEBRUARY 2017

I’m writing this in Dec. and I’m going to have to add another Sept. casualty to my list. (Bryan Clauson), 3 time National Midget Champion, 2010, 2011, 2015. He’s gone, fans will miss him! He did this on USAC dirt and pavement, NO WINGS, and to complete this part of his racing background, he was also, (at the same time) National Sprint Champ, 2010, 2011, 2012. (dirt & pavement NO WINGS) that’s quite a record for today's events. In addition to the above this kid was a real, sharp driver! You remember all my articles about Turkey Nite, well, he won it in 2009, and 2010! Another great job (in the midgets) was winning Chili Bowl in 2014. In that race was Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, and Jason Leffler. I can’t leave out Bellville Nationals, he was winner 2009, 2010, 2015. If you have never been to this track (Belleville) you won’t believe what you see when you walk in! Its called one of the “High Banks” and they aren’t kidding! The back straight (this is a 1/2 mile dirt) is banked about 50-60 ft. up from the inside of the infield. One of the “Killer” tracks for Midgets and Sprints, was Salem, Indiana. The promoters would hold a combination show on the same night for Midgets and Sprints. Bryan won both main events on the same night, a very difficult feat! Bryan Clauson has been one of the most prolific drivers to come through USAC in his short career. Racking up 66 career USAC wins, and several championships, Clauson has cemented his place in USAC history in short time. Clauson’s father, Tim, was a Sprint Car racer in and around the family’s hometown in Northern California – Carmichael. So it was no surprise that Bryan caught the racing bug at a very young age. He took to Quarter Midgets when he was 5, and also tried go-karts, becoming the youngest ever to be named Rookie of the Year in the Outlaw Go-Kart program. He won multiple championships in Quarter Midgets over the next few years, including a Western States Championship even after the family relocated to the Indianapolis area in 1999. In his six years running Quarter Midgets from 1994 to 2000, Clauson earned one national championship, two state championships (California and Indiana), two Northern California regional championships and four Western States championships. He also set a new track speed record during the Nationals in Pueblo, Colo., and surpassed the 20-win mark almost every year. In 1997, as an 8-year-old, Clauson won 30 times. He earned the Quarter Midget Light A Division National Championship in Apopka, Fla., to cap off his final Quarter Midget season of 2000.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

With more than 200 Quarter Midget victories by his 10th birthday, next Clauson turned his attention to 600 Micro and North American Auto Racing Series (NAMARS) Kenyon Midgets. In 2001 and 2002, Clauson scored 26 A-Main event wins and earned Rookie of the Year honors at Camden (Ind.) Speedway. He started running the Kenyon Midgets in 2002, where he scored a national title and Rookie of the Year honors, as well as “First Year Driver” honors from the HARF organization, who in previous years have honored such notable drivers as Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. In 2003, Clauson became the youngest driver to win the Open Division of the Tulsa Shootout, and added six A-Main wins in Kenyon Midgets en route to his second consecutive national championship. Clauson took a shot at Sprint cars the latter part of 2003 and proved to be a natural, qualifying for all 10 events he entered at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway. His much-older peers nicknamed him “The Bullet” and Clauson was recognized as the track’s Rookie of the Year. As a 14-year-old in 2004, Clauson achieved unprecedented numbers in Sprint Car competition. In 37 starts, he netted six wins, 20 podium finishes and 31 topfives. He earned Rookie of the Year honors at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway and Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway, where he also finished second in the overall 2004 speedway points standings. The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame recognized Clauson’s outstanding efforts and presented him with the “Wildcard Award,’ which made him the youngest recipient of the award ever. Clauson competed locally in Indiana the first half of the 2005 Sprint Car season, then moved up into the USAC ranks following his 16th birthday in June. His first start, at Limaland Speedway in Lima, Ohio, resulted in a third-place finish. He finished with five top-10 qualifying efforts and topped it off with a podium finish. Among those who took note of Clauson’s exploits was the ownership of Keith Kunz Motorsports, one of the nation’s premier USAC operations. KKM signed Clauson and opened the door for his participation on both dirt and pavement, in both Midgets and Sprints, and broadened his experience in a big way. He won the USAC Midget race at Columbus (Ohio) Motor Speedway in October of 2005 to become the youngest National Feature winner in USAC history. By season’s end, he had nine wins on dirt and pavement in three different divisions – Midgets, Sprints and Kenyon Midgets. Clauson next caught the attention of Lorin Ranier, director of driver development for Ganassi, who wasted no time signing the youngster to the team’s development program. In 2006, Clauson collected wins in USAC Sprints and Midgets, including the April Sprint event at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway, making him the youngest winner ever at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile” and the youngest USAC Sprint Car feature winner to date. Through that summer, Clauson netted 11 Top-5 and 18 Top-10 National Sprint Car finishes, in addition to eight Top-5 National Midget finishes. In August, as a 17 -year-old, he became the youngest driver ever to sweep a Midget/Sprint doubleheader weekend by winning both USAC Midget and Sprint Car features at Salem (Ind.) Speedway. The sweep placed Clauson in the USAC history books alongside other notable drivers who had accomplished the same feat, including Jeff Gordon, Pancho Carter and Dave Steele. The wins at Salem and Winchester also meant Clauson had successfully swept the high-banked tracks on the 2006 USAC competition schedule. Even after an injury at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. sidelined him for the remainder of the year, Clauson still maintained a top-10 position in both the National Sprint and Midget series by season’s end. He finished fifth in the National Midget division and seventh in the National Sprint division. In addition to the outstanding final tally, Clauson again received freshman props by being named the 2006 Rookie of the Year in the National Midget division. Clauson’s prowess in Midgets and Sprints at an early age caught the eye of Chip Ganassi, who signed the then-15-year-old as a development driver. That materialized into a ride in the Nationwide Series that began with five races in late 2007 and 21 races in 2008 in the No. 41 Ganassi Dodge. As the story goes, Clauson had to ask his high school teacher for a hall pass so he could take a moment to meet with his potential sponsor. Leading up to that fall slate of Nationwide races in 2007, Clauson embarked on a 26-race schedule competing in ARCA for the Ganassi team, and also running the American Speed Association (ASA) North, ASA Challenge, USAC and the Georgia Asphalt Series (GAS) with various car owners, including NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne. In 2007, Clauson’s six starts in the Ganassi Racing ARCA Series entry netted a victory at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis and runner-up finishes at USA Speedway in Lakeland, Fla., and Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, as well as a pole position at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. In his 21 Nationwide Series starts in 2008, Clauson scored a fifth-place finish at Kentucky Speedway in June and a sixth-place finish in the season-opening event at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. He also qualified on the pole in the July race at Daytona. In 2009 Clauson was slated to run full-time in the Nascar Nationwide Series. Early in the winter the deal fell through and he was left rideless. With nowhere to go Clauson returned to the place that made him a star, USAC, for the 2009 season. The 2009 season would prove to be a huge one for Bryan and his team as they racked up 19 feature wins. Among his many accomplishments in 2009 was the

Indiana Midget Week Championship, the Belleville (Kan.) Midget Nationals Championship, winning the Hall Of Fame Classic and the Night Before the Brickyard at O’Reilly Raceway Park, winning the prestigious Turkey Night Grand Prix, and winning the Glenn Howard Memorial at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway. Clauson also received the yearlong honors of being named Hoosier Racing Fan Club (HARF) Driver of the Year and the National Midget Driver of the Year. In 2010, Clauson turned his focus to making a run at all three USAC Championships. He joined forces with Tony Stewart Racing for the USAC Silver Crown Championship, RW Motorsports for the Sprint Car tour, and his familyowned Bryan Clauson Racing Inc. Midget for the USAC National Midget season. 2010 was another stellar year as Bryan captured 19 feature wins that included at least one in each division of USAC. Major wins on the year included the Hut 100, a second straight Belleville Midget Nationals, and a second straight Turkey Night Grand Prix. 2011 was a busy year for Clauson as he competed in all three divisions of USAC full-time along with six Firestone Indy Lights Oval races. Capturing the pole at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Freedom 100 and a third place finish at Iowa speedway highlighted the Indy Lights season. Clauson captured 14 feature wins in 2011 and the Indiana Midget Week Championship for the second time in his career. The end of 2011 saw Bryan win both the USAC National Midget and the USAC National Drivers Championship in back-to-back seasons. As a part of the 2011 prize for the National Drivers Championship, Clauson received a scholarship to compete in the 2012 Indianapolis 500. In 2012, Clauson claimed the USAC National Drivers Championship for the third consecutive year. Clauson won his first USAC National Sprint Car Championship driving the BCI/Curb-Agajanian No. 7 Sprint Car, becoming the youngest driver in USAC history to do so. In USAC National Midget competition Clauson was behind the wheel of the Keith Kunz Motorsports No. 67. The reunited duo finished the season 3rd in National Midget points. The highlight of Clauson’s 2012 season came in May when he qualified for the Indianapolis 500 with the Sarah Fisher Hartman No. 39 team. Clauson continued his winning ways in 2013 capturing a career high 26 feature wins, including his first career winged sprint car win (Jacksonville, IL). Major accomplishments on the year included the Eastern Storm Championship (USAC Sprint Car), the Indiana Sprint Week championship, and a Western World Sweep (winning both the midget and sprint car feature on the same night at Canyon Speedway). Clauson won his second consecutive USAC National Sprint Car Championship driving the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 20 Sprint Car. Clauson finished the USAC National Midget season 2nd in points driving the BCI/ Curb-Agajanian No. 39. In 2014, Clauson kicked off the year by winning the prestigious Chili Bowl Midget Nationals aboard the Joe Dooling/Curb-Agajanian #63 midget. Clauson captured 22 feature wins and the Indiana Sprint Week Championship for the second consecutive year. Along with non-wing sprint car success in 2014, which included winning the Kokomo Track Championship, Clauson made strides in a winged sprint car, as well. In only his second attempt, Clauson made the Knoxville Nationals AMain for the first time in his career in 2014. Clauson again captured over 20 feature wins in 2015, making it four years in a row with 20+ wins. Clauson won prestigious midget events in 2015, including the Belleville Midget Nationals at the Belleville High Banks and the Jason Leffler Memorial Race at Wayne County Speedway. Non-Wing sprint car success continued, as well, with Clauson winning Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway and the Western World Championship at USA Raceway. Clauson also recorded wins in the winged sprint car, both 410 and 360, in 2015. The most memorable winged sprint car win came at Knoxville Raceway on Friday night during the Knoxville Nationals. In 2015, Clauson competed in the Indianapolis 500 for Jonathan Byrd's Racing/KVSH. Info from: http://www.bryanclauson.com/about/

~ Photos courtesy of C. T. Janet Elementary School Karen Doyle is the principal of C.T. Janet Elementary School in Marrero, Louisiana. C.T. Janet is a Jefferson Parish Public School that constantly seeks to challenge its students to excel. Their school motto is “Expect the Best.” At the beginning of the school year, Principal Doyle thought it would be nice for each member of the school staff to create a poster about themselves to hang in the halls so that the children could get to know them better. These posters would allow the kids to see a part of the staff that they wouldn’t ordinarily encounter during a school day. Carl Malone, the school’s plant manager, had a photo of the beautiful ’56 Chevy 210 that he and his wife own. Many of the students commented on the car on Carl’s poster. So, Principal Doyle came up with an idea to reward her students who were on the First Quarter Honor Roll and who also had A’s or B’s in Conduct. She wanted to treat them to a Classic Car Show. Principal Doyle brought her idea to Carl in October 2016. Carl and his wife are members of the Slidell Antique Car Club and the St. Bernard Antique Car Club. Within 24-hours, Carl put together a show. He called fellow club members and friends from around the area and they readily responded: nine local car owners, two came from the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, one from St. Bernard Parish and one from Houma (Mike Cramer, who packed his Chevy SS 409 with 100 t-shirts to give away). They all came out to introduce the students to American automotive technology as it used to be. The car owners were joined by a school bus driver, Joey Harvey, who brought out his Harley Davidson. Carl said that the car owners spent two hours with the students answering a multitude of questions. They asked about the cars’ makes and models, the years they were built and about their interiors. They marveled that most of the cars were older than their parents and that’s OLD! Consider that most of these cars didn’t come originally with seatbelts, so there was no place to lock in a car seat. There was no Bluetooth in the dashboard. There were no DVD players in the back. There was no power steering in most of them, so their moms wouldn’t have been able to easily turn a corner while drinking their morning coffee. Carl and one of his friends enjoyed asking the kids questions, too. Their favorite was asking them to find where they fill their gas tanks. Guesses included through the front bumper, the back bumper, through the tires and through the fenders. They were astounded to discover that one is hidden in his tail light and the other is inside the trunk. Carl said that the adults laughed a lot at the children’s comments and ideas and really enjoyed the curiosity and interest that the kids showed. The smiles and wonderment on the faces of the children made the event totally worthwhile. He was completely infatuated with the kids’ reactions and desire to see and learn about something that they, the adults, love so much. Joey Harvey, the owner of the Harley, allowed child after child to sit on his bike to see what it felt like. The smiles on their faces and the laughter heard said it all about how they felt about that opportunity. A favorite at the show was a candy apple green 2-bucket Ford. Child after child filed by with admiration and amazement. The body style and color caught their attention and the look of the modified engine kept them rapt.

FEBRUARY 2017

Principal Doyle said that the children were in awe of what they saw and experienced that day and they absolutely loved it. It was more well received that even she had hoped it would be and she is very grateful to the men and women who made the show possible. Parents of the students expressed their gratitude to the exhibitors on the school’s Facebook page. Ashly Hayden said that her daughter was so excited by what she had seen that she couldn’t wait to tell her mother all about it when she got home. Kristinia Wilson, said that it had been a special day for her son who talked about it so much she felt like she had been there herself. Carl said that he and his friends will be back again this October as he and Principal Doyle are planning on making this an annual event. He retired as Plant Manager at the end of 2016, but he said that the kids were still talking about the classic cars with him until his last day. He is looking forward to spending time with the children again. Carl said that he believes it is important for classic car owners to share their love of these remarkable cars with the children of today. So many of the vehicles on our roads now are made by foreign-owned companies that true American cars are in the minority. He thinks if we don’t share the history of these fine machines, along with our passion for them, that they will never truly know what we know – that classic cars are worth saving, restoring and treasuring for generations to come.

By: Gizmo I had the pleasure to finally meet a nice young man (anyone 20 years or more younger than me I consider to be young) Scott Travis today. I had been passing by this new shop here in Carriere Ms. for some time and had been wanting to stop in. However I often did not stop out of fear of interrupting his day to day operation. I had been following his Facebook page and finally asked if I could schedule a time to meet and chat for a few minutes. Found out quite a bit about his operation and how he came to be connected in this hobby/sport/business. Like most of us he too started quite young around 14 years of age and with a 1967 Mustang that he and his Father had begun work on. He stayed with working on friends and families cars throughout his school years and some time after but being somewhat selective on what he would work on. He wound up working in the Oil industry for many years and still managed to go racing and still work on performance type vehicles and race cars as his time permitted. As many know the oil industry took a rather large hit not too long ago and many in the oil patch were no longer in demand ( no drilling no work). It was that misfortune that led to his chance to follow his passion and in February of 2016 open the shop on Hwy 11 in Carriere Ms. known as Travis Motorsports LLC. A specialty shop that can build, race cars, do engine swaps on muscle cars, street rods, and old trucks. They can do race/performance tuning on fuel injected as well as carbureted engines. They are equipped with a Mustang Dyno for testing and tuning as well. He is a performance driven specialty shop for those that want just a little more or a whole lot more out of their vehicle. One of his customers known by many in South Ms. and by now Nation wide, is Shane Lester and his Mustang Street Outlaw car Da Hellion. Scott Travis and company do all of Shane's tuning. They have also been building a better and more powerful Evil Twin of Da Hellion that should see some track time in the next few months. I personally can’t wait to see this one hit the streets. And yes it is capable of being street driven, it has lights and blinkers and most items necessary to drive the roads, and as long as you keep your foot out of the go fast pedal it could get upwards to 17 mpg. which is not too shabby for a very high horse powered vehicle. He likes to do engine swaps, the kind where you put a new drive train in an old car, make them run better, and get good mileage and good drivability. Many of us have come to the discovery that these newer fuel injected motors are here to stay and have far greater power and get far better mileage than many power plants we have in our old cars. If you are interested in doing that type of swap, or a race enthusiast that just wants more horsepower out of your present ride it might not be a bad idea to give him a call, set up a time to go see him, I know I will be doing so soon. Travis Motorsports LLC. 601 347-1374 6998 Hwy 11N. ∙ Carriere Ms. 39426 Here a just a few pictures of some things they are working on. ….. Gizmo.
