By: Jimbo Can you believe it it’s Christmas time already. I had to go to my doctor for my yearly check up and although everything checks out OK he wanted me to exercise a little more. I told him the only reason I would take up exercising is so that I could hear heavy breathing again. I also told him that I had joined a health club last year.. It cost me about 400 bucks, and I haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there. He gave me one of those encouragement books to read and I did!! OK GUYS......Now’s a good time to start YOUR EXERCISE PROGRAM by learning the importance of walking..... Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5000 per month. My aunt started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Now she's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell she is. I have to do my exercising early in the morning before my brain figures out what the hell I'm doing. I’ve got to admit I do like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. I figured out the advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier. I did get a lot of exercise this past month at Panama City Beach, Fla

9th Annual Emerald Coast Cruizin. All that walking made me hungry and every time I’d stop to eat my cardiologist's idea of how to stay on my

diet would cross my mind. He said, “ If it tastes good, spit it out.” Doc, it looks like I’ll be doin’ a lot more exercising this month with Toy Runs, an’ lot’s of shopping… as for the eatin’ well as we all know this is the best tasting month of the year and besides it’s impolite to spit, so if it tastes good I’m goin’ for seconds…. I sure do want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Nancy and I, will enjoy time with our families, our children and our grandchildren. This is the time of the year that brings out the best in almost everyone, So… share a little of what you can with folks who need it. And most important of all……. Remember …. Jesus is the Reason for the Season.. Til next month ………. Jimbo “What can I give Jesus, small as I am? The shepherd gave him a baby lamb. Three wisemen gave him precious gold. The angels sang of His glory untold. Mary & Joseph gave Him their loving care. But what can I give? My heart to share!” www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Christmas with Louise As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of panty hose over his fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every Christmas morning, although Jay's kids' stockings were overflowed, his poor pantyhose hung sadly empty. One year I decided to make his dream come true. I put on sunglasses and went in search of an inflatable love doll. They don't sell those things at Wal-mart. I had to go to an adult bookstore downtown. If You've never been in a X-rated store, don't go. You'll only confuse yourself. I was there an hour saying things like, "What does this do?" "You're kidding me!" "Who would buy that?" Finally, I made it to the inflatable doll section. I wanted to buy a standard, uncomplicated doll that could also substitute as a passenger in my truck so I could use the car pool lane during rush hour. Finding what I wanted was difficult. Love dolls come in many different models. The top of the line, according to the side of the box, could do things I'd only seen in a book on animal husbandry. I settled for "Lovable Louise." She was at the bottom of the price scale. To call Louise a "doll" took a huge leap of imagination. On Christmas Eve, with the help of an old bicycle pump, Louise came to life. My sister-in-law was in on the plan and let me in during the wee morning hours, long after Santa had come and gone, I filled the dangling pantyhose with Louise's pliant legs and bottom. I also ate some cookies and drank what remained of a glass of milk on a nearby tray. I went home, and giggled for a couple of hours. The next morning my brother called to say that Santa had been to his house and left a present that had made him VERY happy but had left the dog confused. She would bark, start to walk away, then come back and bark some more. We all agreed that Louise should remain in her panty hose so the rest of the family could admire her when they came over for the traditional Christmas dinner. My grandmother noticed Louise the moment she walked in the door. "What the hell is that?" she asked. My brother quickly explained, "It's a doll." "Who would play with something like that?" Granny snapped. I had several candidates in mind, but kept my mouth shut. "Where are her clothes?" Granny continued. "Boy, that turkey sure smells nice, Gran," Jay said, trying to steer her into the dining room. But Granny was relentless. "Why doesn't she have any teeth?" Again, I could have answered, but why would I? It was Christmas and no one wanted to ride in the back of the ambulance saying, "Hang on Granny, Hang on!" My grandfather, a delightful old man with poor eyesight, sidled up to me and said, " Hey, who's the naked gal by the fireplace?" I told him she was Jay's friend. A few minutes later I noticed Grandpa by the mantel, talking to Louise. Not just talking, but actually flirting. It was then that we realized this might be Grandpa's last Christmas at home. The dinner went well. We made the usual small talk about who had died, who was dying, and who should be killed, when suddenly Louise made a noise that sounded a lot like my father in the bathroom in the morning. Then she lurched from the panty hose, flew around the room twice, and fell in a heap in front of the sofa. The cat screamed. I passed cranberry sauce through my nose, and grandpa ran across the room, fell to his knees, and began administering mouth to mouth resuscitation. My brother fell back over his chair and wet his pants and Granny threw down her napkin, stomped out of the room, and sat in the car. It was indeed a Christmas to treasure and remember. Later in my brother's garage, we conducted a thorough examination to decide the cause of Louise's collapse. We discovered that Louise had suffered from a hot ember to the back of her right thigh. Fortunately, thanks to a wonder drug called duct tape, we restored her to perfect health. Louise went on to star in several bachelor party movies. I think Grandpa still calls her whenever he can get out of the house.

The Coast Cruizers went on a dinner cruise on Sept. 30th. Now if you street rod people haven't been to Woody's Roadside in Ocean Springs, MS you are missing out. At this writing I haven't found anyone with better ribs. Their St. Louis style ribs are great. The BBQ sauce has just the right bite so you can really enjoy it. Now if you want hotter I know there is a bottle of hot sauce around also. The rib half plate comes with 6 ribs, slaw and a side. The full plate comes with 2 sides. The side that a lot of the cruizers got was tumbleweed onions. This is a onion cut real thin and narrow, then dipped in a flour mix and deep fried. If you haven't ate onions this way you have been missing out. We brought a order home. They will warm up and be crisp if done in the oven. Now on to the other items. Beside the pull pork and brisket sandwiches there are 12 different hamburgers plus build you own. Each one has different ingredients. The hamburgers are big, you might have to cut it in two to be able to eat it. It was getting a little loud at our table until the food came, then it got so quite one of the waitress ask if we were ok. Now we move on to the chicken, prime rib and fish sandwiches. Then there is the steak taco, fish taco and shrimp taco. Woody's has 12 appetizers, such as fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, cheese bombs , wings, nachos and more. Woody's is at 3008 Bienville or as known as Hwy 90. The phone number is 228-265-7758. If you plan on having a large group call a day or 2 before and they can set up a room for you. Look for the new Woody's next year on hwy 90 in Biloxi. I want to thank Wendy and Michael for their great hospitality .. Till we eat again J. R.

Thank you for asking what Seashore Mission needs are. We will serve lunch on Christmas Day and that means turkeys and hams, green bean casseroles, sweet potato casserole, and rolls. On Christmas Day everyone (about 150 individuals) receives a stocking filled with goodies, a choice of a sleeping bag or back pack. For deliveries or shipping. Our address is 856 Division Street, Biloxi 39530 If you have any questions please call 228-436-3986.

Good Morning, Jimbo, Just a quick note to tell you my husband and I absolutely LOVE your publication ! It is the first thing we open when the mail comes. The jokes are hilarious and worth keeping and repeating. Keep up the good work. I am attaching a pic that I thought you might get a kick out of. It is of me and our '34 Chevy Coupe, Pa. license plate "Ms Pinky" at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise in Pontiac, Michigan, in August of 2015. It was taken by a representative of the "Absopure Water Company" and used as an advertisement for their sparkling and mineral water. We are planning to attend the Turkey Rod Run in November. I am trying to convince hubby to leave earlier and go to the Panama City event. It sure would be great to meet you personally sometime. Have a great day. Jeannie Hill ("Ms Pinky") and Kenny Hill ("Pinky Dude") Tamaqua, Pa.

Eight members of the Red Creek Classics Car Club (Charlie & Joan Farmer, Jimmy Dale Farmer, Randy & Kim Dandry, Gean Whitney, Jim & Carol Sandidge, Bob & Mary McVeigh, Brian & Denise Shavers, Allen & Robin Shavers) cruised over to Bougalusa on September 19th for a car show. The location was great and all 8 members won an award. Jimbo, There were four churches and a synagogue in a small Ohio town: a Presbyterian church, a Baptist church, a Methodist church, a Catholic church and a Jewish synagogue. Each church and the synagogue had a problem with squirrels. The Presbyterian church called a meeting to decide what to do about their squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will. At the Baptist church the squirrels had taken an interest in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a water slide on the baptistery and let the squirrels drown themselves. The squirrels liked the slide and, unfortunately, knew instinctively how to swim so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week. The Methodist church decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creatures. So, they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist Church . Two weeks later the squirrels were back when the Baptists took down the water slide. But the Catholic Church came up with a very creative strategy. They baptized all the squirrels and consecrated them as members of the church. Now they only see them on Christmas and Easter. Not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue, but it's rumored that they took one squirrel and circumcised him. They haven't seen a squirrel on their property since. GptTeeByrd@

Jimbo, After managing the collision repair shop at Estabrook Toyota for 26 years I finally did it. Something I wish I had done years ago. I now own and operate Bobs Garage and Collision Center in Pascagoula. (5003 Chicot St, Pascagoula, MS 39567) I have been managing the shop for about 3 months now after I was approached about possibly buying the business. I wasn't real sure at first but the last couple of months have been a great experience. I have had many of my family, friends, and previous customers bring their cars to me for repairs. What a great feeling it is for people to come in the front door and announce "I found you!!!" So, that's it guys! I can promise you the same great service I have given for the last 26 years now and even more. My new shop offers light duty mechanical repairs as well as a full service collision center. We can help you maintain your car/ truck for most anything you need. We do oil changes, brake jobs, suspension repairs, ac work, check engine light diagnosis, and 24 hour towing to boot. Please don't hesitate to call me at 228-762-7781 if you need assistance with any of the above or just stop in to say hello. I truly want to thank everyone that has put their trust in me by allowing me and my crew to repair your vehicle in the past. Ray Parrish Airplane Food Airborne approximately thirty minutes on an outbound evening flight from Glasgow, the lead flight attendant for the cabin crew nervously made the following painful announcement..: "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm so very sorry but it appears that there has been a terrible mixup one minute prior to takeoff, by our airport catering service... I don't know how this has happened but we have 103 passengers on board and, unfortunately, only 40 dinner meals... I truly apologize for this mistake and inconvenience." When passengers' muttering had died down, she continued.. , "Anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone else can eat will receive free, unlimited drinks for the duration of our 5 hour flight." Her next announcement came 90 minutes later... "If anyone would like to change their minds, we still have 40 dinners available." Sent in by GptTeeByrd@

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage - December 2015 Its a long way to Mississippi. The summer of 69 brought changes to my life as a young teen, our family moved to Slidell as my parents had informed us we would. I would still be in a Jr High School, and I had no hot rod types to hang around with. That would change rapidly too. That first summer we watched men land on the moon, will never forget that and late that summer just before school was to start, hurricane Camille hit the Gulf Coast. Yes I was stuck in Jr. High but my luck was rapidly changing, I had a chance meeting with two other young guys David and Robbie, seemed they too liked all things motorized. They knew of fast cars and something else motorcycles, I never had much interest in these until my friendship with these two. We were not in the same classes but would meet during recess and lunch and plot and plan on building the badest small block Chevy motors and also build the coolest Harley choppers. We saved our lunch money and bought books and magazines on both of these topics and constantly drew pictures of the coolest and meanest choppers we could in our minds come up with. That first school year in Slidell soon became a blurr, it was soon time to move on to High School. Little did I know these two guys would become lifelong friends. The first year of high school for us anyway meant one or all of us needed a car. Wasn't long until we all got jobs after school and started saving for our first ride. Robby was kind of lucky his dad had an old 57 wagon and let him use it from time to time. David had found a 57 two door hard top in a place along his route to school that he had to have, and I was busy saving away still trying to find something. As luck would have it my parents took us back to my cousins house for a visit and in our travels I saw what would become the first car I would purchase. We waited until the following weekend and Dave, Robbie, and I loaded up in the 57 wagon and headed to Kenner to pick up my first car. A black primer 4door 58 Nomad, and yes they did build a Nomad in 58 it just was not as cool as the earlier models with just two doors. The guy I bought it from said it was fast, had lots of good stuff in and on the motor. Also it had a floor shifter slightly larger wheels and tires in the rear, and for 200 dollars it could be mine. I don't remember if it was ok for a teen to own a car back then but I had the cash we signed some papers and off we went. We spent many evenings and weekends working supporting our new habits. We worked on motors, transmissions, the bodies and anything to make these things cooler and faster. We bought parts from Jakes Speed Shop in New Orleans, then feverishly rushed home to put them on. It was not long before we learned of some racing taking place on a Sunday, almost every Sunday next door to Pearlington in south Ms. Seemed there was a straight stretch of road off of the beaten path, freshly paved that went for several miles, and it even had a return route to aid with more cars lining up to race. We just had to check this out. It was everything that folks had described to us and more. There was even places that spectators could park well away from the racing path to watch and root for their favorites. This activity would consume most of our Sundays for quite some time. There were actually extremely fast cars out there, some came in on flatbed trucks and trailers, some were way beyond our league. I won my first drag race there as luck would have it, I launched the old 58 hard and had a good car length lead on my opponent then his driveshaft failed, I guess a win is a win even if the other guy breaks. Seems the only problem was there was only one way in and one way out, it also seems the Highway patrol got wind of this newfound racing event and sent one of their finest to bust it up. I must say he was pretty cool about it, he drove up in a bright orange roadrunner, parked it directly in front of the starting line, got out and on the bullhorn announced that the next one that races will line up against him, and he wasn't going to lose, and if you did you would be taking an escorted ride with him to a local lockup. Needless to say our summer of fun with cars was over. Oh and that site we discovered became Port Bienville, an industrial site. None of us ever let our parents know what our Sunday activities consisted of, I am sure had they found out we would all been walking to school instead of driving. It was great fun while it lasted and no one ever got hurt, just a bit of pride from time to time getting beat by your opponent. The road to Mississippi was found but then again it was still a ways away. Later Gizmo

In 2002 a $5 dollar chance started it all. I won a 1921 Model “T” Touring car said Paul Graham of Lakeview, AR. They delivered the car to my house and gave me a few instructions about driving the car and left. (If you never have driven a model T, what you think is the clutch pedal isn’t and what looks like a hand break isn’t either) I had to get my Dad to teach me how to drive the darn thing… Pictured above is Paul’s 1927 Model “T” . It was a rusted out basket case and took him awhile to restore it and make it a driver. Paul also built the teardrop trailer. Paul was passing through Biloxi when a wheel bearing failed. A 1927 front passenger side wheel bearing isn’t something the local auto shop keeps in stock. So Paul took out his NSRA Fellow Pages book (this is why you should have one in your car) found my name and number, gave me a call, asked if I could find him some help. As luck would have it there was a car & plane show going on and I was sure the Antique Auto & Engine Club of MS was going to be there. Thanks to them and Mr. Ray Harper of Model “T” club in Mobile, AL. (Continued on page 10)

A few more calls were made and Dan Resch of Ocean Spring, MS pulled up to Paul’s ModelT. soon the wheel was fixed thanks to Dan. The weather was turning bad and rain was not far off. Dan made a call and soon Paul pulled his car and camper under a house that was up on stilts. A day of rain kept Paul off the road. I caught up with him Monday morning for breakfast at the Palace Grill downtown Gulfport. What a great adventure he is having! He is traveling while checking in on family and friends. He’s traveled from Arkansas to Ohio, Pennsylvania, down thru the Carolinas to lower part of Florida then following the coast line to Louisiana before heading home. He left in September and almost all the roads he traveled are the back roads. Paul said he gets more thumbs up than middle fingers, and when he stops, folks are just plain friendly. Interesting thing about the NSRA Fellow Pages….the people listed in there get to help a stranded streetrodder, even if it’s just a phone call to someone you know or you are the one who pulls up with a toolbox. When things are fixed and it’s time to say goodbye...you just may have a new friend. Jimbo

The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year. www.streetrod101.com/safetyinspection.html

THE WAY I SEE IT Are you thinking of applying for a government contract for your small business? Here is a fine example of a bid application for …. Government Pipe Specifications 1. All pipes are to be made of a long hole, surrounded by metal or plastic centered around the hole. 2. All pipe is to be hollow throughout the entire length - do not use holes of different length than the pipe. 3. The I.D. (inside diameter) of all pipe must not exceed the O.D. (outside diameter) - otherwise the hole will be on the outside. 4. All pipe is to be supplied with nothing in the hole so that water, steam or other stuff can be put inside at a later date. 5. All pipe should be supplied without rust - this can be more readily applied at the job site. N.B. Some Vendors are now able to supply prerusted pipe. If available in your area, this product is recommended as it will save a lot of time on the job site. 6. All pipe over 500 ft (153m) in length should have the words "long pipe" clearly painted on each end, so the Contractor will know it is a long pipe. 7. Pipe over 2 miles (3.2 km) in length must have the words "very long pipe" painted in the middle, so the Contractor will not have to walk the entire length of the pipe to determine whether or not it is a long pipe or a very long pipe. 8. All pipe over 6" (152 mm) in diameter must have the words "large pipe" painted on it, so the Contractor will not mistake it for small pipe. 9. Flanges must be used on all pipe. Flanges must have holes for bolts quite separate from the big hole in the middle. 10. When ordering 90 degrees, 45 degrees or 30 degrees elbow, be sure to specify right hand or left hand; otherwise you will end up going the wrong way. 11. Be sure to specify to your vendor whether you want level, uphill or downhill pipe. If you use downhill pipe for going uphill, the water will flow the wrong way. 12. All couplings should have either right hand or left hand thread, but do not mix the threads - otherwise, as the coupling is being screwed on one pipe, it is unscrewed from the other.

Thanksgiving is behind us…Christmas is coming up. The Holidays are a great time to spend some time with family. While we were Cruisin The Coast in South Mississippi, my brother Ken was heading to Hersey, PA for one of the oldest and largest automotive swap meets in the USA, featuring over 9,000 vendors. Original parts from the Model T through the 1960’s. He needed some parts for his 31 Chrysler. One thing that really shocked Ken was the kind of cars that were featured in that part of the country. The high end cars of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. In the South we didn’t have many high end cars, in the South we had farming, a lot of share croppers and they all drove junk. There were very few rich folks. The local doctor may have driven a Cadillac, but that was about it. Most people were poor, coming out of the Great Depression that really hit the South hard. The North on the other hand had manufacturing, production and steel mills. There were a lot of wealthy folks who drove some mighty fine cars. Many of those cars were preserved in the Northeast. It’s a whole different world there at car shows…let me let my brother Ken tell you about it.

world making them. He said when he’s gone, there won’t be anymore. I had to think about that a while, a long while and then overnight. $750 for a hood ornament! Most everything we bought, we bought that first day, picked up six headlights because I liked the way they looked. We had a pull behind wagon to carry our stuff, many other folks did also. You had to if you were buying. Some folks had signs on themselves for what they were looking for. We ate dinner, got a bath and hit the hay. Thursday morning we were headed out the door at 6am for another day of looking at the swap meet. We figured we covered half the swap meet the first day and we had the second half to cover, but first we had to double back and get the $750 hood ornament. Folks that know me, know me as tight. I just know the value of a dollar. Not one of them would believe I spent that kind of money for a hood ornament. I hope my friends don’t find out about it… might ruin my tight reputation. But hey it was there, you either take it or not. I didn’t want to pay $200-$300 for a damaged one so really it was my only option. We got after it all day…besides the gazelle, I bought some tie-down straps. We saw Wayne Carini with the TV Show “Chasing Classic Cars” at the swap meet, but there was a small crowd talking with him so we didn’t bother him. Got back to the hotel, ate, took a bath and hit the bed. That was 22 miles of walking in two days, we slept well. Friday morning we headed over to the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum. Some truly beautiful upscale automobiles, some we had never seen before. We ran into Wayne Carini again and this time it was one on one, we talked a little while and he was nice enough to snap a picture with me.

I need some parts as Terry said. I was told if you can’t find it in Hersey, it’s doesn’t exist. We (my wife Linda and me) got up on Tuesday morning early (CTC week) and left Dothan, AL about 4am. We pulled into Hersey, PA about 5 pm that afternoon, got checked in, got a bite to eat and went to bed. We got up the next morning, Wednesday and headed to the swap meet. I needed a crank hole cover (it’s a fancy cover that covers up where you would have stuck the crank handle in the grill to hand crank the car.) A hood ornament (gazelle) and a windshield frame, I want to re-do the windshield on the car later on and a few other things I needed. We looked at every vendor and scanned what they had and kept moving as quick as we could. I did not find a windshield frame, but I did find a guy that custom makes good looking frames, when I’m ready…I’ll have to remove mine and send it to him and he’ll custom make it using my old one as a pattern. I found the crank hole cover for $150 and bought it. We also found the original gazelle hood ornament… with either a horn missing or a leg missing on each one they had in stock, the pot metal just could not stand the test of time. The original was made out of pot-metal and was easy to break. They wanted $200-$300 for those, then we ran across an 85 year old man that made the gazelles out of stainless steel, he had been making them for 40 years and they were beautiful. He wanted $750 for each one he had made out of stainless they were tough as nails. He is the only guy in the

After the museum we headed over to the chocolate factory where the Hersey Chocolate Bars and candy is made and took the tour. They gave us a couple ounces of chocolate, I thought we’d get more. At the end we could have purchased a Hersey Chocolate Bar that weighed eight pounds. It was about three feet long and a about a foot tall for $40. I wish we had of bought it later, but we didn’t. Saturday morning we got up early again…this time for the car show, over 1,500 cars from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. We watched as the cars paraded into the show…that was awesome! There were also some 1950’s cars there, a ton of 1957 Chevys. As you can see from the photos here, there were some fine cars there. We spend about four or five hours looking at fine cars. We then headed out in search of the Amish, we headed to Lancaster, PA for the Dutch Harvest Festival. We saw plenty of Amish, horses and buggies and an Amish farms. We also visited the Amish towns of Intercourse and Bird in the Hand, PA. We stopped at an Amish Meat Market and looked around inside and talked to the shop owners. We also talked with a 13 year old young girl that was outside holding the horse while her momma shopped, she said she had just started actually driving the buggy. We ate at a Dutch restaurant that evening… after a long wait to get in. We had some of the best chicken pot pie you have ever eaten. That’s what I called it anyway…some real good roast, various vegetables, breads and some out of this world desserts. We headed back home Sunday. I think we’ll go one more time next year to soak it all in. It was a fun trip and a different world when it came to classic cars. You just don’t get to see those cars down South. My 31 Chrysler has all modern running gear and all the creature comforts of life. The big thing up there was original cars, we did not see a single modified car during our stay. I understand the car clubs have high standards you have to meet each year to continue in the clubs. While the cars were awesome to look at and inspect, I’ll keep my driver. Our total trip covered 2,383 miles.

The old man sat in his gas station on a cold Christmas Eve. He hadn't been anywhere in years since his wife had passed away. It was just another day to him. He didn't hate Christmas, just couldn't find a reason to celebrate. He was sitting there looking at the snow that had been falling for the last hour and wondering what it was all about when the door opened and a homeless man stepped through. Instead of throwing the man out, Old George as he was known by his customers, told the man to come and sit by the heater and warm up. "Thank you, but I don't mean to intrude," said the stranger. "I see you're busy, I'll just go." "Not without something hot in your belly." George said. He turned and opened a wide mouth Thermos and handed it to the stranger. "It ain't much, but it's hot and tasty. Stew ... Made it myself. When you're done, there's coffee and it's fresh." Just at that moment he heard the "ding" of the driveway bell. "Excuse me, be right back," George said. There in the driveway was an old '53 Chevy. Steam was rolling out of the front. The driver was panicked. "Mister can you help me!" said the driver, with a deep Spanish accent. "My wife is with child and my car is broken." George opened the hood. It was bad. The block looked cracked from the cold, the car was dead. "You ain't going in this thing," George said as he turned away. "But Mister, please help ..." The door of the office closed behind George as he went inside. He went to the office wall and got the keys to his old truck, and went back outside. He walked around the building, opened the garage, started the truck and drove it around to where the couple was waiting. "Here, take my truck," he said. "She ain't the best thing you ever looked at, but she runs real good." George helped put the woman in the truck and watched as it sped off into the night. He turned and walked back inside the office. "Glad I gave 'em the truck, their tires were shot too. That 'ol truck has brand new ." George thought he was talking to the stranger, but the man had gone. The Thermos was on the desk, empty, with a used coffee cup beside it. "Well, at least he got something in his belly," George thought. George went back outside to see if the old Chevy would start. It cranked slowly, but it started. He pulled it into the garage where the truck had been. He thought he would tinker with it for something to do. Christmas Eve meant no customers. He discovered the block hadn't cracked, it was just the bottom hose on the radiator. "Well, shoot, I can fix this," he said to himself. So he put a new one on.

16

DECEMBER 2015

"Those tires ain't gonna get 'em through the winter either." He took the snow treads off of his wife's old Lincoln. They were like new and he wasn't going to drive the car anyway. As he was working, he heard shots being fired. He ran outside and beside a police car an officer lay on the cold ground. Bleeding from the left shoulder, the officer moaned, "Please help me." George helped the officer inside as he remembered the training he had received in the Army as a medic. He knew the wound needed attention. "Pressure to stop the bleeding," he thought. The uniform company had been there that morning and had left clean shop towels. He used those and duct tape to bind the wound. "Hey, they say duct tape can fix anythin'," he said, trying to make the policeman feel at ease. "Something for pain," George thought. All he had was the pills he used for his back. "These ought to work." He put some water in a cup and gave the policeman the pills. "You hang in there, I'm going to get you an ambulance." The phone was dead. "Maybe I can get one of your buddies on that there talk box out in your car." He went out only to find that a bullet had gone into the dashboard destroying the two way radio. He went back in to find the policeman sitting up. "Thanks," said the officer. "You could have left me there. The guy that shot me is still in the area." George sat down beside him, "I would never leave an injured man in the Army and I ain't gonna leave you." George pulled back the bandage to check for bleeding. "Looks worse than what it is. Bullet passed right through 'ya. Good thing it missed the important stuff though. I think with time your gonna be right as rain." George got up and poured a cup of coffee. "How do you take it?" he asked. "None for me," said the officer. "Oh, yer gonna drink this. Best in the city. Too bad I ain't got no donuts." The officer laughed and winced at the same time. The front door of the office flew open. In burst a young man with a gun. "Give me all your cash! Do it now!" the young man yelled. His hand was shaking and George could tell that he had never done anything like this before. "That's the guy that shot me!" exclaimed the officer. "Son, why are you doing this?" asked George, "You need to put the cannon away. Somebody else might get hurt." The young man was confused. "Shut up old man, or I'll shoot you, too. Now give me the cash!" The cop was reaching for his gun. "Put that thing away," George said to the cop, "we got one too many in here now." He turned his attention to the young man. "Son, it's Christmas Eve. If you need money, well then, here. It ain't much but it's all I got. Now put that pea shooter away." George pulled $150 out of his pocket and handed it to the young man, reaching for the barrel of the gun at the same time. The young man released his grip on the gun, fell to his knees and began to cry. "I'm not very good at this am I? All I wanted was to buy something for my wife and son," he went on. "I've lost my job, my rent is due, my car got repossessed last week." George handed the gun to the cop. "Son, we all get in a bit of squeeze now and then. The road gets hard sometimes, but we make it through the best we can." He got the young man to his feet, and sat him down on a chair across from the cop. "Sometimes we do stupid things." George handed the young man a cup of coffee. "Bein' stupid is one of the things that makes us human. Comin' in here with a gun ain't the answer. Now sit there and get warm and we'll sort this thing out." The young man had stopped crying. He looked over to the cop. "Sorry I shot you. It just went off. I'm sorry officer." "Shut up and drink your coffee " the cop said. George could hear the sounds of sirens outside. A police car and an ambulance skidded to a halt. Two cops came through the door, guns drawn. "Chuck! You ok?" one of the cops asked the wounded officer. "Not bad for a guy who took a bullet. How did you find me?" "GPS locator in the car. Best thing since sliced bread. Who did this?" the other cop asked as he approached the young man. Chuck answered him, "I don't know. The guy ran off into the dark. Just dropped his gun and ran."

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

George and the young man both looked puzzled at each other. "That guy work here?" the wounded cop continued. "Yep," George said, "just hired him this morning. Boy lost his job." The paramedics came in and loaded Chuck onto the stretcher. The young man leaned over the wounded cop and whispered, "Why?" Chuck just said, "Merry Christmas boy ... and you too, George, and thanks for everything." "Well, looks like you got one doozy of a break there. That ought to solve some of your problems." George went into the back room and came out with a box. He pulled out a ring box. "Here you go, something for the little woman. I don't think Martha would mind. She said it would come in handy some day." The young man looked inside to see the biggest diamond ring he ever saw. "I can't take this," said the young man. "It means something to you." "And now it means something to you," replied George. "I got my memories. That's all I need." George reached into the box again. An airplane, a car and a truck appeared next. They were toys that the oil company had left for him to sell. "Here's something for that little man of yours." The young man began to cry again as he handed back the $150 that the old man had handed him earlier. "And what are you supposed to buy Christmas dinner with? You keep that too," George said. "Now git home to your family." The young man turned with tears streaming down his face. "I'll be here in the morning for work, if that job offer is still good." "Nope. I'm closed Christmas day," George said. "See ya the day after." George turned around to find that the stranger had returned. "Where'd you come from? I thought you left?" "I have been here. I have always been here," said the stranger. "You say you don't celebrate Christmas. Why?" "Well, after my wife passed away, I just couldn't see what all the bother was. Puttin' up a tree and all seemed a waste of a good pine tree. Bakin' cookies like I used to with Martha just wasn't the same by myself and besides I was gettin' a little chubby." The stranger put his hand on George's shoulder. "But you do celebrate the holiday, George. You gave me food and drink and warmed me when I was cold and hungry. The woman with child will bear a son and he will become a great doctor. The policeman you helped will go on to save 19 people from being killed by terrorists. The young man who tried to rob you will make you a rich man and not take any for himself. "That is the spirit of the season and you keep it as good as any man." George was taken aback by all this stranger had said. "And how do you know all this?" asked the old man. "Trust me, George. I have the inside track on this sort of thing. And when your days are done you will be with Martha again." The stranger moved toward the door. "If you will excuse me, George, I have to go now. I have to go home where there is a big celebration planned." George watched as the old leather jacket and the torn pants that the stranger was wearing turned into a white robe. A golden light began to fill the room. "You see, George ... it's My birthday. Merry Christmas." My 6 year old Grand Girl and BESTEST Cruisin' Buddy, Carley Adelle. The aroma from the bakery would seduce us to go inside and perhaps purchase a freshly baked date cookie. People walked on the sidewalk carrying their paper shopping bags filled with hand-picked presents for their loved ones. The shoppers were dressed in their best clothes as they chose their presents with special care. I would take some of my long saved money and buy two handmade Carmallo marshmallow candies at L.S. Ayres candy counter. Sometimes we would stop and get a Coke at the Woolworth lunch counter.

My favorite time of the year just ended. No, not the car show season, although that is a fun time. My favorite season of the year is berry pie season. It starts out with fresh strawberry pie, goes to cherry pie season, followed by rhubarb pie eating. We then move on to blueberry pie time, culminated by fresh peach pie. This brings us into custard pie season, so it must be time for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Here are some memories I had of Christmas. Shopping didn’t begin in October or November as it does today. It began in December long after Thanksgiving was concluded. Our family was important to us, so intense thought was put into our list of prospective presents. Many of our presents were handmade, so it took planning to complete them on time. We would ride the trolley into downtown Indianapolis and gaze at the toy trains, animated elves and other characters in the display windows at Wasson’s, Blocks, and L.S. Ayres department stores.

I always took time to stare at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument that was bedazzled in lights in an attempt to look like a giant Christmas tree. Christmas was an important family time. On Christmas Eve, we traveled sixty miles by car to be with my grandparents. We would celebrate with my father’s parents on that night. All my aunts, uncles, and cousins from that side of the family would be there. Yes, arguing and fighting was prevalent among us little urchins along with a good bit of jealousy, but the solidarity of the family always won out in the end. We would play records on the Victrola and play games. We would eat a marvelous feast while seated around a huge table. Berry pies made with real lard were served. After those festivities were concluded we would go to my mother’s parent’s house to sleep.

The family would awaken Christmas morning to find presents had been placed under the tree and were begging to be unwrapped. The entire family would be dressed in striped pajamas. A fire was burning in the fireplace and the aroma filled the room enhancing the fragrance of the freshly cut pine tree. Hand-made decorations adorned the green beauty. A Lionel electric train circled in, occasionally whistling. Later we would sit around the Chromcraft table eating marvelous food served on Fiesta dinnerware. Laughter would fill the home. Christmas was an important holiday in my youth. It carries even more significance currently. I live ten miles from the community and house I grew up in. The house is still there. Many of the friends I played with as a child are still living in the county. We were fortunate enough to be able to return here 16 years ago. I left this area when I was 17 years old and have

lived all over these great United States. I have friends from high school that I remain in contact with. Our daughter, her husband and our two grandchildren live in this same community. I am thankful to have them nearby and for them to have the opportunities available here. There is nothing more important in life than a strong loving family. I speak of the immediate family as well as the extended family. Our extended family grows in number almost daily. We share with them and they share with us and our abundance grows. An abundance of rewards have been given to all of us. Five plus years ago I had the good fortune to meet Jimbo Perkins. Jimbo is a man I sing praises of wherever I go and he richly deserves them. Trunk Tales by Cubby had its origin then, giving me the opportunity and privilege to entertain readers with stories of the past and the conduit to meet many, many more wonderful people. When you read this article Thanksgiving will have passed and we will be preparing for Christmas. First and foremost I give thanks to God. Without the birth of Jesus Christ there would be no reason for celebration. Next, I give thanks for my wife who has put up with my antics for 46 years, our beautiful daughter and her loving family (and the grandchildren). Much gratitude I give to Jimbo and those amazing, talented hotrodders who have befriended me. Special mention goes out to you loyal readers who are so important to me. I will celebrate my blessings not only throughout this holiday season but all year long. Thanks to everyone who forgives me for my many shortcomings. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

By Candy Cocktail With the Christmas season fast approaching, it is a time to reflect on the previous year and enjoy holiday traditions with your family and friends. Today’s American Christmas is a combination of many different customs adopted from around the world. Since the holiday began in the 1860s, many of our traditions are passed on throughout the years. As we get older, we create new traditions of our own. One of my favorite family traditions of the holiday season is that every December, all of the women in my family gather together to do a cookie baking day. We bake all day, usually making about six or seven different kinds of sweet treats. Another yearly custom I observe is to go to midnight mass on Christmas Eve night. This is a popular tradition for Catholics in the U.S. as well as the predominantly Catholic countries of Italy, Cuba and the Philippines. As I was thinking about my own traditions, I was thinking about how differently traditions vary by culture, religion or country. Thus, I arrived at my theme for this month’s article. I wanted to learn about some unique and interesting holiday traditions to share with you. Almost everywhere in the world there is a Santa Claus type figure acknowledged. Though he may have different names, ethnicities, and times when he visits, he is happily anticipated by millions of children the world over. Usually he even still arrives by way of a four-legged creature, from a horse to a large reindeer to our timeless tale of the hooves of eight tiny reindeer led by a rednosed Rudolph. In Germany, the tradition of the pickle ornament brings good luck. After all of the other ornaments are hung on the tree, the pickle ornament is hidden somewhere in the branches. On Christmas morning, the first child to find the pickle receives a small additional present from St. Nicholas. For Greek and German cultures, the holiday season does not officially end until Epiphany. Epiphany, also called the feasts of the three kings, is always celebrated 12 days after Christmas as a day to remember the three wise men who visited the baby Jesus. Those like me that observe epiphany, never take their Christmas decorations down until after epiphany as it is considered bad luck to take them down before then. Furthermore, churches use the special day to remember the day of Jesus' baptism with a great blessing of the waters at nearby lakes, rivers or beaches. In the many countries, including the United States, Australia and Bulgaria, there is a large festival procession down to the water. The priest throws a wooden cross into the water and where the water is not frozen, believers, who are usually a group of men or teenage boys, jump into the cold waters to save the cross. The person who finds the cross will receive a special blessing from the priest for them and their family. One of the most recognized events like this occurs in Tarpon Springs, Florida, not far from where I live. I have been to the event many Epiphany winner in Tarpon Springs photo from www.tampabay.com

times in past years. It attracts visitors from all over the world. It is mainly celebrated by Catholics and orthodox Christians. It is honored with a large festival in Spain. In Belgium, where my father's family came from, children dress up as the three wise men and go door to door in groups of three singing for people to give them money or treats, much like trick or treating on Halloween. In Ireland, this day has become known as Women's Christmas. Traditionally, the women get the day off to get together and have wine or tea and cakes while the men do the housework and cooking. I think many women will agree this might be a good custom to adopt! Unlike other countries, Christmas is celebrated on January 7th in Russia and the Ukraine. On January 6th, or Christmas Eve, they enjoy a twelve course supper in honor of the 12 apostles. Another Ukrainian custom is to use an artificial spider and spider web as tree decor instead of the usual tinsel and ornaments. Most of Canada's traditions are similar to those of the United States. In Canada, the post office recognizes the address Santa Claus, North Pole, Canada, HO HO HO as a real address to which any letters received will not only be opened, but replied to.

Mexico, our neighbor to the south, is responsible for our favorite red and green holiday plant, the poinsettia. Named after an American minister to Mexico, Joel R. Poinsett brought the plant to America in 1828. In the late 1800s, New York stores began to sell them. Soon they were a universal symbol of the holiday. Many people may not have heard of it, but being an Alaskan native, I know of a place recognized for its connection to the most wonderful time of the year. The town of North Pole, in central Alaska, is home to Christmas year round. For 365 days a year, you can visit Santa Claus at his home. The entire town is Christmas themed; even the local McDonalds is a highly decorated Christmas experience. Leave it to Americans to create a new tradition for Christmas and alcohol. The boozy tradition of The Running of the Santa's involves thousands of people dressed as Santa doing a huge pub crawl. Similarly, in Ireland, the natives leave mince pies and a bottle of Guinness out for Santa. England gave America one of its most time honored traditions, stockings. The tradition of hanging children's stockings began in England. For good children the stockings would be filled with presents and treats while bad children would get a lump of coal in their stocking.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Christmas caroling also began in England, where wandering musicians would travel from town to town visiting rich homes and castles where they would receive a hot meal or money in exchange for their performance. An age old tradition for our British neighbors across the pond is to have each member of the family stir the Christmas pudding before it is cooked, making a wish as they do so. In Finland, people mark Christmas with a tribute to the dead. Families light candles at the graves of their departed loved ones, making Finnish graveyards a beautiful sight. A Christmas tradition in Panama is to set up a model village of the city of Bethlehem with all of the people in the scene, except for the baby Jesus. Before bed on Christmas Eve, the baby Jesus figurine is placed into the manger to commemorate his birth. In the Czech Republic, single women have their own Christmas tradition to find out if they will marry in the following year. With their backs to the house door, they throw one of their shoes over their shoulder. If the shoe lands with the heel towards the door, she will definitely stay single for the coming year. If the front of the shoe points towards the door, it means she will move out of her parents’ home and marry. Another tradition that I grew up with comes from Germany. On St. Nicholas Day, celebrated on the eve of December 6th, children leave a shoe or boot outside of their bedroom door. The next morning, candies and small toys will be left in the shoe by St. Nicholas. Legend has it that a golden birch for spanking would be left instead of confections if the child had been bad. In Norway, Christmas is a more superstitious time. All brooms are hidden away on Christmas Eve so that they cannot be stolen by witches and evil spirits. The men even fire their shot guns outside of their houses to frighten the witches away. As for unusual traditions, South Africa may be home to the weirdest one. A Christmas Day delicacy for the locals is deep-fried caterpillars. A white Christmas surrounded by snow is not the iconic Christmas scene everywhere. In Brazil, Christmas time is during their summertime. So Brazilians decorate palm trees with Christmas decorations. Like Brazil, Christmas comes to Australia during their warmest time of the year. The Christmas season occurs in the middle of summer where it is sometimes 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Since it is the time of year for sun and sand, Christmas celebrations usually include a barbecue and spending the day at the beach. For decades, if you were unable to work up enough courage to tell your crush how you felt, the mistletoe hanging above the door offered the perfect opportunity for a seasonal smooch. Mistletoe was used by Celtics for good luck, healing, increasing fertility and warding off evil spirits. The tradition of smooching began sometime in the Victorian era and was believed to lead to marriage. Maybe I will give this one a try this year.

In the U.S. it is traditional to send festive Christmas cards to your favorite people. While we Americans send any array of merry holiday cards, Japanese families only send white Christmas cards. Red cards are avoided because red is the traditional color of funeral announcements. Among all of the classical traditions, one of the most interesting and unexpected ones that I came across was from Japan. For many Japanese people, a traditional Christmas dinner is a meal from Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). It is so popular that you need a reservation just to eat at a KFC in Japan on Christmas. The most popular beverage of the joyful season, eggnog, was first made in the U.S. in 1607 by Captain John Smith. The perfect striped treat to enjoy with your eggnog is another symbol of Christmas that came from Germany; the candy cane. According to folklore, the peppermint sticks originated in Cologne when a choirmaster asked a local candy maker to create a sweet bonbon to silence the children during church mass. The curve at the top was added to remind children of the shepherds that came to visit the baby Jesus. While you are preparing for jolly old Chris Cringle’s yearly visit, why not try a new tradition? These traditions from around the world are certainly unique. Some seem downright odd. Some you may know of and others that are new to you. You may even adopt a few to make a part of your traditional family holiday. Whatever you choose to do, I wish you all a happy holiday season surrounded by those that mean the most to you!

The Emerald Coast Cruizin was bigger this year. Not just in the number of cars and trucks (over 2,000), but a larger crowd of spectators. What a great show and if you haven't been yet, you really should try and make the show next year. I call it my vacation.. my chance to set up Hot Rod Alley and visit with Coast Cruizers, MotorSports magazine and readers from all over. I arrived in Panama City Beach on Sunday, a week before the show. Looking at some of the hotel parking lots in the area, I realized I’m not the first to arrive. After checking into the Seahaven Beach Resort (next to Sharky’s) I cruised the beach road in search of some of the Large Time Cruisers. I found them and they were livin’ up to their name..they were havin’ a Large Time….. Monday was a day of making arrangements for the Hot Rod Alley set up. We took time out to parade to two local Senior/Health Care homes. The residents and staff at Sea Breeze Health Care and

Brookdale Senior Living Solutions were excited to see all the classic vehicles pull in. The visit included gifts from ET Graphics and some of the cruisers. Just a great feeling knowing we helped bring some smiles to these folks. Tuesday was a day of vendors setting up and marking the fields for parking cars. Early birds went to a Cruise-in at Pier Park, then to a party at Dirty Dicks Crab Shack that night.

Wednesday was the final day to get everything finished up at Hot Rod Alley. If you haven’t been to Hot Rod Alley, it’s a 40’x40’ hospitality tent, set up by Gulf Coast MotorSports and the Coast Cruizers. Club registration and MotorSports subscription are available. A parking area close to the tent is blocked off for Coast Cruizers and their guests…. There was a Cruise-in at Harley-Davidson of PCB. It was so big that vehicles were parking in surrounding parking lots. Night time found Cruizers at the Kick Off Party at Runaway Island. Thursday I got to the event site an hour early before the gates open. Cars were lined up…. waiting to get in and pick their spots. At 8am the gates opened and hundreds of cars-n-trucks passed by Hot Rod Alley heading to the main parking field. They just about filled all the parking spots as far as you could see.. Courtney Hansen / Cristy Lee / Jo Coddington were on hand to meet and greet show goers. At 5pm when the show was closing for the night, cars & trucks lined up to parade Pier Park before heading to the Welcome Party & flame throwing contest at Hammerhead Fred’s. Friday was a full day of visiting, looking, shopping and eating. Lot’s of great vendors were on hand and the car corral had some interesting deals. A huge concert took place Friday night on the Aaron Bassant Park stage. The opening band Wide Open and then recording artists the Bellamy Brothers entertained the packed show grounds. Saturday we were all back for one more day. Live music by Young Elvis and the Blue Suede’s took to the Aaron Bassant Park stage. Awards were at 4:30… and there were a lot of them to give out. Some of the lucky ones shared in the $10,000 cash award drawings. (Continued on page 24)

The Saturday night “Beach Party” at Sharky’s was complete with the crowning of Mr. & Ms Emerald Coast Cruizin couple. Congratulations go to Brenda & Joe Doran - (‘54 red and white Chevy always playing their oldies music while cruising)

The Friday night concert by the Bellamy Brothers and Wide Open was a great event. The show setting was perfect for Emerald Coast Cruizin thanks to the pair of Factory Five cars that sat on both corners of the stage.

This years event t-shirt design was based on Brett & Hilary Anderson's awesome coupe. Cristy Lee, Courtney Hansen and Jo Coddington posed with the proud owners in this photo.

After dark everyone seemed to get a second wind and headed over to Hammerhead Fred's for food, drinks, socializing and some flame throwing. For the 3rd year in a row that hot orange GMC truck took home the award with its wicked flames that light up the evening.

Pier Park Mall was the place to get in some cruising to or from the beach boulevard. There were quite a few participants that took part in the night parade that wound its way thru part of the mall.

The Top 25 were presented their awards in an earlier ceremony. The Sponsors and Fab 5 Awards were presented to their winners by Jo Coddington.
