Into each life a little rain must fall at least that’s what they say, but I sure wish it wasn't on the days when there are planed events. We had to cancel the Atomic Blast (March 11& 12th) but lucked out and April 22-23 is the rescheduled date for the ATOMIC BLAST. You may remember this article from July 2015, Two things in life are said to be certain: death and taxes. Apparently the latter part of that saying applies even if you’re a Corvette Club that’s just raising money for charity. That’s what officials with the 2015 Mississippi Corvette Classic car show in Jackson were shocked to find out recently for the first time. “We raise money for charity every year,” said Tom Gerity, vice president and treasurer of the Mississippi Corvette Club and a retired lawyer. “This is the first year we’ve ever been told this.” The car show leaders were informed by the state Department of Revenue that even though the Corvette Club is a registered 501 (c) (7) non profit social club, exempt from federal and state income taxes, it isn’t exempt from paying 4 percent sales tax on admissions and in addition, vendors at the show are required to pay 7 percent sales tax. Last year’s show netted about $13,000 for the Make-A-Wish charity, while this year’s profits are slated for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. Gerity said he was told by DOR that he had to serve as an uncompensated deputy tax collector, collecting sales taxes from all the vendors at the event. “They’re wanting a 3-percent tax on the $5 donation we request at the door when you come in the show, plus 1 percent to the city of Jackson,” Gerity added. “Then, we have a fee of $40 for cars to be in the show, and they want taxes from that. A nonprofit civic organization is not subject to taxes on admissions.” State Department of Revenue spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury said the agency “looked carefully” to make sure the Corvette Club wasn’t exempt but found that the club still had to collect sales tax. On the other hand, if the Diabetes Foundation had been the promoter, it would qualify, she said. She declined to explain the difference between the two organizations. “The promoter in this case did not meet the definition required in law for exemption,” Waterbury said. “… Unless you are specifically exempt by law, an admission tax is due, even if you call it a donation but require it for people who enter.” The bottom line is that the Corvette Club was required to provide DOR a $500 bond on Friday “I guess to make sure we collect the taxes,” Gerity said. Still, he and the club believe that since it gives every cent of what it raises to charity, “this is not right.” Source: clarionledger.com

Dear Promoted Event Holder, It has come to our attention that you are going to have a Promoted Event. I have included in this email the promoted event packet. Please have this completed and submitted to our office no later than 3/28/16. Please contact our office if you have any questions. Julie Cerny - Tax Analyst - julie.cerny@dor.ms.gov Department of Revenue 1141 Bayview Ave. Suite 400 - Biloxi, MS 39530 Ph: (228) 432-3499 - Fax: (228) 436-0964 WWW.DOR.MS.GOV 1-800-982-3029

Yikes!!!!!! that’s not the kind of email you want to respond to but I did. I called Julie (in her defense she was very nice on the phone.) as she put it “The Gulf Coast has so many events taking place that the MS Dept of Revenue is going after all clubs and organizations that are not complying with the state tax law.” Just because you are a 501c or non-profit club does not excuse you from registering with their office. The tax dept may be sympathetic towards the clubs and organizations, knowing they are raising money for charity, but that doesn’t allow her dept to overlook MS tax laws. Every one needs to be aware of the sales tax issue. You might want to go to this web site for some of the answers that you may have. http://www.dor.ms.gov/Pages/SalesTax-FAQs.aspx SOooo…..if you are promoting a fundraiser or an event on the Gulf Coast don't be surprised when it’s your turn to get the email from Julie. The Coast Cruizers are now serving as an uncompensated deputy tax collector, collecting sales taxes from car show registrations, 50/50 ticket sales and all vendors at our events & cruise-in’s.

Times are-a-changin’ and we will adapt, it could be worse…. Don’t shut down your club because of a little extra paperwork and giving away some of the money you raise to our state government...don’t forget they protect you. After all, we all know Freedom isn’t Free Jimbo, My friend told me he was passing by his sons bedroom and was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. It as addressed, "Dad". With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands: Dear Dad: It is with great regret and sorrow that I am writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with you and mom. I have been finding real passion with Joan. She is so nice even with all of her piercing, tattoos, and tight motorcycle clothes. Dad, it's not only the passion.... she is pregnant and Joan said that we will be very happy. Even though you don't care for her as she is so much older than I, she already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. She wants to have many more children with me and that's now one of my dreams too. Joan taught me that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone so we'll be growing it for us and then trading it with her friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want! In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Joan can get better. She sure deserves it! Don't worry Dad, I'm 15 years old now and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I am sure we will be back to visit so you can get to know your grandchildren. Your son, John P.S. Dad, none of the above is true! I am over at the neighbor's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life other than my report card that is in my desk drawer. I love you! Call when it is safe for me to come home! Jimbo, Here is the latest Flyer (page 28) that we have going out. Also, there is a little bit about what we are doing and why, with some information about sponsors and Prizes. This annual event is intended as an outreach to the local community in conjunction with a fund raiser for our Missions Program both local and abroad. Also, we will be returning to Victoria, British Columbia in July. Additionally, we will be traveling to South Dakota in August to finish a building at a Christian school. We will also support our local Outreach Ministry, “Helping Hands and Hearts” We would like to thank our Sponsors for the Awards and donations: Car (Pre 1980), Car (Post 1980), Truck, Bike, 4x4, Rat Rod, Preacher’s Pick, Best Paint, Best Engine, Best Interior, Kid’s Choice. APRIL 2016

I did not do a Hot Coffee for last month’s magazine. We did get a dinner cruise in at the end of February; it was after the magazine was sent to press. This dinner cruise was to Azteca restaurant on Hwy 49 in front of the Wal-Mart store. This is a different Mexican food from the other Mexican Restaurant. This food comes from around Mexico City. It has a few different dishes from the others on the coast. I had a dish that they put tortilla chips in a green sauce and cook that for a little bit, then added chicken to it. It had a chicken lime taste. Just enough lime to tell something was different. There are some seafood dishes that are good also. Two of the best things that Azteca has is the margaritas, both on the rocks and frozen. I don’t know what they use to make them so smooth, but they will jump up and slap you after the second one. The second thing is Tres Leches cake. This is 3 milk cake. Now this is kind of a coarse cake with three types of chilled milk poured over and topped with whip cream and fruit on top. Now ask for an extra bowl of milk with Kahlua liqueur added to the extra milk. Take a fork full of cake and dip in the milk. Next time you will skip the food and go straight for dessert. Go by and try the food Till we eat again. J. R. Jimbo, In your article labeled "the Americans With No Abilities Act (AWNAA) of Gulf Coast Motor Sports Magazine Vol. 21 No. 2 the article was a JOKE published by Onion magazine 18 years ago. It was printed in your magazine with no disclaimer. Although it is absurd enough to have come out of the joke we call Washington D.C. it was not true. Dr. David Green - greendrs@ Jimbo Just a little background on myself, I am retired Navy (20 years) the majority of my time was stationed at Assault Craft Unit 4 as a Engineer on the Hovercraft. I retired in 2007 and went to work in a steel mill in northern Mississippi, in 2012 I started working for BP offshore. The blast unit was purchased in December 2015 and my goal is to start working the blasting business full time. Glen Ross - 228-223-6981 I've had a lot of call from people looking for someone who does the dustless blasting so give Glen a call. His ad is on page 67. I’ll leave you with this Jerry King cartoon

THE WAY I SEE IT

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage - February 2016

Simple Truth By Jeffrey Cannon

Its a long way to Mississippi.

The 4 a.m. Traffic Light You know the light I'm talking about. At four in the morning, you're driving down a flat desolate highway. You can see forever in every direction and are entirely sure that you are completely alone. Out of nowhere, and for no good reason, appears a red light. You stop and wait for it to turn green. It doesn't. You know it's completely safe to run the light. There are no cars coming - you can see that with your own eyes. And yet you wait. A tumbleweed blows past you as you ponder the possibility of some sort of police sting operation to catch late-night red-light runners. By now you are cursing yourself for being such a lawabiding fraidy-cat. You tell yourself that the Dukes of Hazzard would run the light (yes, even Daisy). Minutes later, just as you're about to almost gather up enough guts to start thinking about maybe getting the courage to perhaps go through the red, it turns green. You've wasted some time, burned unnecessary gasoline and proven yourself to be a pussy. All because of a little red traffic light. Multiply this frustration by a billion if you have to pee really really badly. The Europeans have a system where at 4 a.m. lights such as these, become flashing reds, to be treated as a stop sign: stop, look, go. No wonder they look more relaxed than us. A special thank you to Officer Probst for suggesting this topic. He's a good cop - or at least he's never beaten me with his flashlight for no reason. Bicycle Helmets- When I was a kid learning to ride a bike, I fell off a lot. But guess what? No helmet, no elbow pads, and not a single case of brain damage. None of us wore helmets back then, and none of us ever hurt ourselves. And we were 10 billion times more reckless on our bikes than kids are today. I saw a guy ride off the roof of a church in 5th grade. I'd like to see the Nintendo generation try that. Nowadays you see helmets everywhere: on roads and trails, on adults and kids, on bicycles and tricycles. How the hell do you fall off a tricycle? If your kid needs a helmet on a tricycle, I hate to say it, but your kid needs a helmet 24 hours a day. A total stranger pulled up beside me the other day and told me I should be wearing a helmet. I asked him why he wore his, and he said it was to protect his head. So I punched him in the neck.

Time to Break These 5 Bad Driving Habits Drivers may slip into some bad driving habits when they're comfortable with the road — but the following could result in a crash or a traffic violation. Avoid these bad driving habits to help keep the road safe: Failing to signal. It's important to let other drivers and pedestrians know your next move so they can slow down and accommodate. Signal at least 100 feet in advance. Rolling through stop signs. Even if you think the streets are clear, come to a complete stop before turning or proceeding into the intersection. If you don't and the intersection is not an all-way stop, you may cause a crash. Slowing down to look at crashes or construction. "Rubbernecking" is not only dangerous, but can also contribute to a chain reaction of slowed traffic. Keep your eyes on the road ahead so you can stay alert to closed lanes or police officers directing traffic after a crash. Running yellow or red lights. It can increase your chance of a crash. If the light turns yellow before you reach the intersection, it's best not to risk it. Disregarding the speed limit. Though posted speed limits vary by state, use the following ranges as a general guide if you don't see a posted limit: Residential area: 15–30 mph Undivided road (rural): 40–55 mph Divided road (rural): 55–70 mph Freeway: 55–65 mph

My dream ride was now a reality. And to me it was way cool. No top no fenders, however it did have a hood and hood sides. It had a gray leather interior, and of course my favorite color satin black exterior, Hallibrand wheels and of course they were bigs and littles. For motorvation it sported a fuel injected tuned port small Chevy motor and for cruising down the highway a 700R4 tranny. 4.30 gears in the 9 inch Ford rear with very tall rear tires which allowed me to get well over 20 miles per gallon. There were some memorable trips we made in that little hotrod as well. I drove that car to the Street Rod Nationals in Louisville Kentucky the year after it was road worthy, and quickly discovered one could not have an adequate supply of sun block for the tips of ones ears nor for their hands most notably the knuckles, as driving in the early August sun sans a top is quite brutal. Then to top it off made a run to Shades of the past the following September for a two day event in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. My wife endured this trip, it was her first of many excursions with me. She discovered that we had a limited trunk space and could not possibly fit her shoe collection as well as half of her closet and all of her makeup plus my small bag of shorts and tee shirts. A deuce roadster trunk is quite small to begin with but I made mine even smaller by locating the fuel tank and the battery in there as well. After much wrangling she hesitantly resigned herself to a pair of shoes she would be wearing and 2 changes of clothes and a very small stash of what I called her face paint. We made it to Pigeon Forge somewhat in tact. It was a good thing we were traveling with some other folks as she quickly abandoned me at a gas stop somewhere in Alabama, at or near the noon hour, to ride in a closed pickup with a/c and did I mention a top to finish the trip to our Hotel. Now being from the south, we don't think about cold weather until late December maybe even January, but as luck would have it a storm blew through the area the night before we were to head home, and that morning we were faced with temps some 30 to 40 degrees lower than the day before. Our group of travelers were not scheduled to leave until the following day and our vacation schedule dictated to us we had to get home that day. Lets just say she froze for the first half of the ride home and then we both baked in the sun drenched interior of my little hotrod for the remainder of our journey. After that brutal fun for her she advised me my next hotrod should have a top, and with windows that could be rolled up or down and also a heater and an A/C. I had a blast with that little hotrod for a few more years until a fellow decided he had to have it. A deal was struck and soon I saw it driving away from my humble garage it was built in. I was in awe as he drove it away, I never saw it rolling away and never heard its sound like that either, at that moment I had wished I had never sold it, for to me it looked and sounded perfect, and was straight and true as it was leaving my sight. The next day I was once again on the phone with Mr. Hastings in Illinois and he would soon be building a 32, 3 window coupe body for my next adventure in building hot rods.. Later and don't fall for those April Fools gags, Gizmo Later Gizmo.

The fun part of NSRA comes in the form of activities. The premier event in the sport is the NSRA Street Rod Nationals速 the world's largest automotive participant event, and it is supplemented with nine Divisional Nationals & one National to bring the NSRA type of activity to even more parts of the U.S. The NSRA events are a combination of games, activities, mini-events and manufacturers selling trade shows, and every event is geared to family entertainment. Join the NSRA Today! The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year. www.streetrod101.com/safety-inspection.html

By Candy Cocktail North Carolina native Jake Shelton has made a name for himself around the world for his one of a kind furniture creations that play homage to the hot rod and surf style so many of us are fond of. Jake is an award-winning hot rod artist who specializes in stunning car sculptures and “revvedup” automobile art. I recently caught up with artist Jake Shelton to learn more about his amazing work and ask him a few questions about his exceptional career. With customers as far away as Australia and China, he has shipped his pieces all over the world. Having an array of customers and commissioned pieces, Shelton has created everything from a Cadillac couch for Snoop Dogg to an incredible ’63 Riviera living room set for the drummer of famed metal band GWAR to his work with celebrity Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers on the DIY Network’s show, Man Caves. To say Jake is an incredibly talented and creative artist would surely be an understatement. In addition to his fabrication work, Jake is a talented painter and sculptor. Jake has a unique work background; in the 80s he worked in New York City in fashion, jewelry, clothing and even surf wear prior to working in auto body. Turbo-charged and leaving the competition in the dust, the original in the car furniture field first put his hammer to the metal on an old GMC truck at 8 years old. His enthusiasm and creative drive helped him turn his childhood passion into an art form, garnering attention and recognition from around the globe. Jake has a great appreciation for those that came before him, notably Ratfink creator Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, George Barris, Red Harden, Larry Watson, and Dean Jeffries, along with influences from surf culture, the Lowrider ethos, Polynesian and Tiki art, and his punk rock roots. Jake explained in a past interview, “All of my art comes from a deep love of Hot Rods and Kustom Kulture.” Further describing his passionate approach to his craft, he added, “To take a piece of a thing that used to go fast and make it go fast again is feeling that the energy of the road is still in that fender, hood, front clip, door, whatever it is — and it’s waiting for me to make it fast, cool, and beautiful again.” Jake can take even the most unusual requests from concept to design to finished products. Sometimes a customer comes to him with an idea for a particular item and sometimes it is the opposite and he creates the design. Beds and couches are his most asked for creations. For his car pieces, customers may have an old car they want used or he can do a mold of what they want, taking your favorite ride out of the garage and into the living room. However, he pointed out that no two pieces are exactly the same. He can make a replica of something he has done before, but he says it will not be a perfect replica because he does it the way he wants, with each piece being unique in its own way. So what is the favorite car for the originator of car-inspired home décor? Of course I had to ask! Jake said, “It would definitely not be a stock car. It would be

something customized.” He said it was understandably a difficult question to answer and struggled with picking just one vehicle, so instead he told me his top few favorite vehicles: the Jaguar Hearse from Harold & Maude, a Shelby Cobra and Mad Fabricators’ Piero De Luca’s 1931 Ford Model A Coupe with a Cadillac motor. Shelton’s fusion of furniture and automotive work has also been used for photo shoots. Well known pinup photographers like Roy Vargas have shot with his creations. When I asked Jake what surprises people most about his work, he said that his customers are always surprised by how comfortable his pieces are. He said, “People are always blown away when they try it out and see how comfortable it is.” Jake, also known as “the American original” in the field of custom car furniture artwork and design, has had all types of items requested by customers. When I asked him what was the most unusual or unique item someone has wanted, he replied that it was probably a drag strip chair or a chair for F-18 pilots. The F-18 pilot chair was created for the squadron bar. When a pilot gets his wings, he gets roasted in the chair. So what does Shelton consider to be the highlight of his career so far? He got to meet one of his idols, Red Harden. Harden, who with Dean Jeffries, worked in the design and building of iconic cars such as the original Batmobile, the Dodge Charger from The Dukes of Hazard, the original Kit car, the Silhouette and the Coffin Car from The Munsters, came to Jake’s shop with his son Garrett. As Jake says, he got to meet the man who built everything he loved as a kid. He was awestruck to meet someone that he looked up to. Jake told me that another highlight of his career is seeing his work completed and then seeing the customers’ reaction to it; “When I finish a piece and see it all done, it’s a great feeling.” He added that even though he cannot always be there when a customer gets the finished piece and they see it for the first time, he really enjoys the times when he does get to meet the client in person and see their reaction when they see the finished piece for the first time. His distinctive artwork and furniture have been featured in celebrity homes, numerous publications, movies, TV shows, such as Sleepy Hollow, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Motor Sports Mania, MTV 2’s Burnout, Nightline and Martha Stewart Living, and in major retail stores. His work has been displayed by retailers, including the Fender Music Corporation, Ultimate Bumps and Jumps, the Cardinal Stadium in Arizona, a Tommy Hilfiger store in New York City and even the largest cruise ship in the world, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Allure of the Seas. With clients including celebrities, politicians, rock stars, professional athletes and the F/A Sharpshooters of the United States Marine Corps among countless others, collectors of his pieces span across six continents worldwide. You can even see Jake’s work in the hit blockbuster movie, Iron Man 3. Shelton was contacted by one of Marvel Studio’s art directors to create a customized piece for the third installment of the Iron Man film franchise using the parts from the crashed cars of the Monaco Formula-One race scene in Iron Man 2. The piece made exclusively for the movie is now owned and displayed in the home of the movie’s star, actor Robert Downey, Jr. To see more of his impressive collection of work, you can view his portfolio on his website www.jakeschopshop.com/.

Daytona has come and gone, and the winner Denny Hamlin certainly deserved it! Before Katrina, we were living in Gulfport and enjoying life at the "Alibi Lounge" on our "off" time. I always played the "pick the winner" that was every week and "bragging rights" when they won! One night "Barbara B" the some times bartender (and good friend of ours) came over with a girl friend and said to me "tell her how to win this game". She doesn't know a thing about auto racing"! "OK" say I, what would you like to know? She smiled and said "who is someone who is new, and no one picks right now, and I can pick him when I come in, because I don't know any of the drivers"? I look at Pineapple (my warden) and said "the new kid from ARCA I like, is "Denny Hamlin. I had been loud with the warden in my praise for the kid, he is #11 with Joe Gibbes, (and still is!) Incidentally "Barbara B" was one hell of a fast 1/4 horse in the old days, I was partners with Frank Hayes (also a trainer of thoroughbreds) and he taught me plenty about horses, thoroughbred , and horse racing.1/4 horses don't run against thoroughbreds, its like a 1/4 mile NASCAR stock car. There are some "super quick" thoroughbreds who get "out of the gate" 3 or 4 lengths ahead of the field. One of these was "Fair Truckle" one of the fastest thoroughbreds to come out of the gate ever ! The "gamblers" (everyone who goes to the horse races) clamored for the match, so - It was a match race for 1/4 mile at a mile track and it was the start of the Sunday thoroughbred program. The betting windows were open, and everybody got their money down. It was like this: Barbars B in the 3rd slot, Fair Truckle in the 4th and they dropped the gates and the race (1/4 mile) was on!! Barbara B (the 1/4 horse came out in front by a "head". Fair Truckles head was even with her ("Barbara B'S") neck, they ran 1/4 mile that way, at the very end of the 1/4 Fair Truckle's nose was up even with Barbara B'S ears! It was a great race, and there lots of explanations by the losers Facts: 1/4 horses are 1/4 thoroughbred, legs usually are 1" shorter in the rear than a thoroughbred, hence muscles size is slightly larger in the rear legs. They were both female (mare) animals. "Barbara B" was the world record holder for the 1/4 in the USA. Fair Truckles trainer was reported to say "30 feet more and we would have won, and kept going and finish the 1 mile". Back to Stock Cars, Denny Hamlin as of now has run 364 races, over 12 years, with 27 wins , 175 top ten, and 23 poles. Now you readers think about this: 23 poles, and 27 wins, it says a lot about the team and the driver! Also fate can take a hand at anytime! Denny was born in Tampa, Fla. - 1980. He weights 170lbs. stands 6 ft. Only rookie ever to qualify for the "Chase" for the sprint cup championship. He has won with Chevrolets for Gibbs and also now with Toyota's. Money talks, Bullcrap walks. There are those who never, win Ever since racing began, but the winners, smile with the eyes of man! Back to NASCAR, and stock cars: Marshal Teague was a good friend, he and Smokey Yunick were driver, mechanic, and good friends. Marshal first put Hudson on the map, in the 1940's after the war. In 1948 Hudson introduced the "step down" design. The entire body weight was lower than the frame which lowered the CG (center of

gravity) much lower than other MFGS. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday". This was the "Sales Lead" in the 1940's. Marshal went to Hudson factory uninvited, and unannounced, and while there, became friendly with Vince Piggens who was in charge of the engines for Hudson's factory. Together they developed the 7X racing engine, 6 cylinder, 308 cubic inches. Following the finish of modifications, Hudson posted 27 wins out of 34! Drivers you will recognize, winners were: Marshal Teague, Herb Thomas, Dick Rathman, Fonty Flock, Tim F l oc k, J a c k Mc G r a t h , F r a n k Mu n d y , L o u F i g a r o. As I have mentioned before, Marshal, Harold Miller (my mechanic and crew chief on the 1957 Pontiac I drove) and I would get together when Marshal would come out to race in Calif. or to order and oversee special crankshafts for his and Smokey Yunick's Hudson engines. This is 68 - 70 years ago, I never ran NASCAR, only AAA, URA SLRA, and finally USAC (my hope was to run the 500). Well, NASCAR had the rules that limited engine size, 5 liter by today's standards (310 cu. in. max). So the 6 cylinder Hornet was a tough car to beat! I've mentioned the knife edge crankshaft before, but the other big change was to off set the crankshaft throws, even though stocking or over boring was not allowed. Real hi performance engine builders pay lots of attention to the rod angle on the stroke. The Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, had the Kettering V-8 engine. This went on to 1955 when Chevy came out with its V-8 engine and the racing world changed again! To be fair, Kettering was also known for inventing the electric starter for gas engines. Too bad they didn't have him in charge of the racing engines, Chevy would have been a real contender in the early 50'. The Flocks got NASCAR started after the Daytona Beach Road Race. Their first race (NASCAR) was labeled "Strictly Stock" Stock Car Race! This was the start of win on Sunday, sell on Monday! This 1st race on the new Daytona paved circle track, was to be 500 miles (to compete with the Indy 500). Johnny Mantz was invited down by Bill France (who started NASCAR with the help of the Flocks) and promised to help Johnny get a "ride". They were to start 50 cars (17 more than Indy) and were called "Strictly Stock" cars. None of the NASCAR car owners would give Johnny a "ride" due to his Indy 500 reputation and they really did not want him in the race! Johnny finally talked Bill France into letting him race Frances 1950 Plymouth 6 cylinder. Most of the NASCAR drivers had never raced on a paved track, they were used to sand, clay, or just dirt! He won the race, 6 laps ahead! So back to Stocks, I'm running a `57 Pontiac (for the factory) and they book USAC at Vallajo, Ca. Its dirt 1/2 mile and runs BCRA

midgets regularly. So we load up Harold Millers 56 Ford pick up, bring some recaps soft tires in case the dirt gets dry slick for the main event. In 1957 I never missed a dash with the Pontiac. It was 347 inches (Kettering) and would fly! (with the crankshafts installed after grinding, hard chroming and balancing). So, starting in the rear as always (in those days) we start the main. I move up slowly, and 3rd is Walt Faulkner, in 1957 Ford, and looking to take the lead! Don't know who or how, but 6th place (outside) passed 4th high, lost it (spun) and slammed into Faulkner! He hit him in the passenger door. (we are talking 60-80 mp) and the Ford flipped to the infield as I went by. (not a good sight) They (USAC) red flagged us and we all stopped. In the early days (40's, 50's) we didn't use a window net. Compared to open wheel midgets, sprints, Indy, inside a "stocker" was like being bulletproof. Most of us only used the lap seat belt, due to the roof, fenders, doors, and windshield being protection. Walts head & neck came out the window and were crushed. This started and became a rule in 1958 for window nets. As most of you know, we used to put the following in white on the drivers window - oil, water, gas, tires. You rolled the window up for what you needed at the pit! No 2 way radios etc. I made them put in a stock radio, and played it loud during warm ups and hot laps. Race drivers didn't go to funerals, you just sent a wreath. Joe Lucy brought me and Willie Wildhaber to run the two midgets in Calif, #4 & #5. Joe took 2 engines (extra) over to Clay Smith Engineering and when these were rebuilt, the other two in the cars were changed and rebuilt. I worked for Clay as he taught me how to maintain those engines on the road. Well, I'm sure you already know Denny won Phoenix Sunday, and this will be printed before I am writing again. (yes I know about the 19th finish last week). Welcome to all the new folks, Cubby (I'll always keep the 1st car radio article from past) and I liked the Indy article also with Harroun. Terry, your articles keep me up to date and thanks. The big thanks to Jimbo for without his publication we become also - rans. One more thing, I was running AAA and URA (Calif.) when AAA dropped out of racing (too much deaths, and law suits). I became a charter member of USAC 1956. I had the pins as you see here for 1956-57. I kept them in a jewlery box, they were burglarized, so all thats left is 1958 which my daughter Kayle has on the collar of my leather racing jacket, today!! This is a very special month for the 17 FOREVER column. This month marks five (5) years that I have been writing this column, wow! It seems like just yesterday. Thank you for reading and following me in this column, for asking me questions about subjects that we covered, my family, my health…thank you! The Winter Florida AutoFest in Lakeland, Florida, an incredible event. Thirty thousand (30,000) people attended this show at a $10 admission. This show moved from Tampa last year, just down the road to Lakeland because they had simply ran out of space. Imagine a car event that covers about a square mile of property. Car show, classic car auction, car corral, over one thousand (1,000) vendors, air and motor coach concours including multi-million dollar coaches and World War II bi-plane rides in a 1941 Boeing Stearman. Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show rocked the event. I had been talking with Jim Brady for about three years about doing this event and finally he said send me a contract. I first met Jim Brady when he was running the Turkey Rod Run at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach. A great guy and a great promoter. As soon as I got to know Jim, Carlisle Events stole him away to run the two Florida Shows. Carlisle Events have been running quality car events for 42 years. They are into their third generation of running these events. It’s in their DNA, it runs through their veins like motor oil through an engine. Their layers of organization is incredible. Details even as small as having lady attendants at each set of porta johns on the property so their guests have a clean bathroom to use at all times. Not a huge thing, but attention to detail, I saw this amount of detail throughout their event, attention to detail means a lot. We figured about 12 hours of driving time with gas stops and such to get there…so we got up at 2 am on Thursday morning, (We already had everything prepared, packed and ready to go in both the truck and the Hot Rod Show trailer, including all the tire air pressures checked in all eight tires) and hit the road for the Lakeland/Tampa market and The Winter Florida AutoFest. My truck gets about 8.5 miles to the gallon towing the trailer, so I knew about every 200 miles there would be a gas stop. We arrived in Lakeland midafternoon, got the trailer in position and dropped it. We also setup the two extra sound systems we carry and got them tarped for the night. Next it was over to the La Quinta Inn (pet friendly) to get checked in for the night and everything unpacked and setup for our four night stay. We went out for dinner and back to the hotel for a bath and we hit the sack for an early wakeup call the next morning. We were up at 5:30 am, got a quick breakfast, picked up ice from one of those cheap ice house machines, grabbed a thermos of black coffee and headed for the show grounds. To get into where we were setup we had to go through about four check points where we had to tell them who we were and we were waved on through each. Friday was a good day at the show. As soon as we started the music, here comes General Lee, the 1969 Charger made famous by the TV Show… “The Dukes of Hazzard”, being chased by a 1960’s police car with the blue lights going. Tom Wopat, Luke Duke from the TV Show arrived. We were set up next to the grand entrance to the car auction. (they auctioned off 425 classic cars in two days) A nice replica of the original Batmobile was set-up right behind our trailer. Show cars were also in front of us. A fair style food mid-way was down below us. We were in the highest traffic area of the event. At 10 am we called all the veterans to the Hot Rod Show Trailer and kicked off the show with our Veterans tribute and played the National Anthem. During the anthem we had a flyover of vintage aircraft timed with the anthem. A very nice touch each day. Friday seemed to be more retired folks attending and snowbirds as they are called. I also had an old friend, Rick from my home town who

16

now lives in Florida drove two hours to see us and visit. We ended up going to Red Lobster to eat after the show. It was so packed and we were so tired we ended up just getting it to go and that took 45 minutes. We soaked in the tub and crawled in bed for another early wake-up call at 5:30 am. Saturday we knew would be the biggest day of the show and we were not disappointed. Once again the Veteran’s tribute, the anthem and the flyover. Then here came the General Lee being chased by an Enos cop car and we were off. The crowd doubled or tripled from Friday and a more mixed crowd and a lot of families. Around noon Tom Wopat dropped by for our planned interview. I had prepared all the questions I wanted to ask and Tom was a

Turns out Tom is also a good singer, he is a lead singer with his own jazz group. He also has a recurring role as the sheriff of the neighboring county in the Netflix TV series “Longmere.” Saturday was awesome. The show cars at this event were incredible in both quality and numbers. Also a girl I went to school with and her husband drove up from Ocala to see us and visit. It was good to see Carol. Saturday evening we were so tired, we grabbed some chicken and took it back to the room, a bath and crashed. Sunday morning we slept in until 6:30 and grabbed breakfast, the show started the same way and we were waiting for the arrival of Butch Patrick, Eddie Munster from the TV Series The Munster’s. I had an interview scheduled with him also. The Munster’s was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I loved the cars, I was never an Addams Family fan. Butch arrived about 12 noon right in the middle of the car show awards ceremony and joined in the announcing. I had the Munster’s show theme song ready to go for him. Afterwards we did the interview. Butch had great stories. He was actually 11-12 on the show, but looked 6-7. He said doing the

show was so much fun, but also he would hang out with other shows being filmed on the CBS lot such as “Rawhide” and “The Carol Burnett Show.” We ended the show at 3 pm on Sunday, got the trailer packed up and pulled it to downtown Lakeland to a nice seafood restaurant on the square called Harry’s Seafood. At 4 pm on Sunday afternoon we had to wait 30 minutes for a table and had a great meal. Back to the hotel bath, bed and an early wakeup call. We got up at 2 am and was on the road home by 3. We stopped in the Florida panhandle and met up with my brother Ken for lunch and reached home about 4 pm. Great Trip and great show! We were invited back for the November show, The Fall Florida AutoFest. This is a great show to plan for a trip. Carlisle Events asked me if I could do my show without my trailer, I said sure, I can hop on a plane with my laptops and do the Hot Rod Show anywhere if they have a PA setup. Carlisle Events has some huge shows in Carlisle, PA. Some of those shows have over seven thousand (7,000) vendors. They also have a permanent PA system already set up. Some of the shows are…The GM Nationals, The Ford Nationals, The Chrysler Nationals The Truck Nationals and Corvette’s at Carlisle. We’ll see how those work out. Next month we’ll take you to the really cool car show in New Roads, LA…The 7th Annual New Roads Street Festival Car Show, we had a blast there and were joined by Tyler Dale from the

Future Of Vintage Car Driving? The All-Electric Ferrari

Report by Bryan Campbell for Gear Patrol Photos by Electric GT

Two weeks ago, while perusing Instagram I came across the words “world’s first all-electric Ferrari.” I immediately halted whatever Internet rabbit hole I was bound to head down (it’s not procrastinating if it’s your lunch break). Feelings of giddy intrigue and frustration cropped up, and I was soon ranting at my computer monitor: “Who’d dare? Ferrari would never. Not Maranello. Long live the V12!” Which was quickly followed by the thought: “Wait, think of the torque… Oh man, all that torque — and from zero RPM? Burnouts.” After some quick digging I calmed down and found it: an all-electric 1978 Ferrari 308, the first of its kind. The brainchild of Eric Hutchinson at ElectricGT. But what was an electric motor doing in a Ferrari? Though Hutchinson’s ‘78 308 GTE (a clever rebadging) may be the first Ferrari to ever fill up entirely on electricity, it’s not the first classic to get a full resto-mod electric-swap. Rock West Racing does an electric-swap kit for Porsche 356 Speedsters and EV West will do electric conversions on anything from old VW Buses and Beetles to ‘51 Chevy pickups, although they’re more known for their all-electric DeLorean. It’s by no coincidence, though, that the muse for the electric 308 is the owner of EV West, Michael Bream, Hutchinson’s neighbor and friend of 20 years. But the idea to convert a 308 didn’t come overnight in a dream or a “eureka!” moment, Hutchinson says. “Michael has always been badgering me to do a project. And I’ve always wanted a splitwindshield VW bus, but those are a dime a dozen in the electric business.” The idea for the electric 308 actually came in August of 2014, when the two were, as Hutchinson says, “sittin’ there having beers at Michael’s house, thinking about a project, and actually we were joking about Magnum P.I. — so then we get on Copart.com and that car just pops up, literally that day.” That’s exactly what gives people chills of heresy when they first hear about a Ferrari 308 getting an all-electric conversion: the image and name of that iconic car, that mid-mounted Maranello opera house, Selleck’s iconic mustache — all tainted with eco-friendly technology. And, with the classic car market stronger than ever, with Ferraris dominating the list of most expensive cars ever to go to auction, why not do a faithful restoration and bring the car back to its

18

APRIL 2016

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

former glory? Enzo Ferrari is turning in his grave — but only because Hutchinson’s electric Ferrari nearly doubles the original 308’s stats at 400 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. That’s why the 308 made the perfect candidate, according to Hutchinson. “If you’re going to do an electric conversion for the purpose of performance and not for the environment, what’s the perfect car? The 308 is an underpowered, 250 horsepower car, but has a Ferrari racing frame with double wishbone suspension at every corner. The thing was meant to really have some power.” But Hutchinson wasn’t after clean air and a lower fuel bill: “We wouldn’t change a car to electric unless it was a massive upgrade to the performance.” And, thanks to Hutchinson taking off as much weight as possible to curb the heft of the 48 lithium ion batteries and three Ac-51 HPEVS electric motors, the 308 GTE is only 150 pounds heavier than when it left Marinello in ‘78. And because there is no need for a gas tank or exhaust system, the electric motor sits lower than the old V8, giving it a better center of gravity, and thus better handling.

I wanted a car I could drive every day, has great image, and isn’t a Nissan Leaf. Before you damn him for chopping up a classic for the pursuit of performance, know that Hutchinson is a car guy, through and

through. He admits, “We had no intention of ruining a perfectly good car, so that’s why we started with a salvage title.” The Ferrari 308 he won at auction, for $10,000, was the victim of an Italian sportscar cliché engine fire that burned all the belts off, blew out the back window and left the interior with melt damage — not to mention the fact that the fire department destroyed the hood with crow bars. You can say this Ferrari 308 was, quite literally, reborn from its own ashes. This electrified Ferrari, on paper, really can’t be argued with. Wherever performance, reliability and annual maintenance costs are concerned, there’s no contest; Hutchinson’s 308 GTE beats the original every time. Sure, the Italian symphony pumping from the mid-mounted 2.9-liter V8 is gone, but the style from the 308 has been wrapped around modern EV technology for daily driving. Hutchinson said that he wanted a car he can “drive every day, has great image, and isn’t a Nissan Leaf” — and so, the GTE claims another victory. With battery weight and power in a constant inverse relationship, and donor classics like Hutchinson’s 308 and his next project, a 1980 Fiat 124 Spider, readily available, there are certainly opportunities for electric conversions to best their original counterparts. As powerful as batteries get, they may never replace 2JZ swaps or stop people from dropping LS crate engines in pretty much anything. But if the industry continues on this path, the future of hot rodding looks a little more green.

Crumpled Money With a very seductive voice a wife asked her husband, "Have you ever seen Twenty Dollars all crumpled up?" "No" said her husband. She gave him a sexy little smile, unbuttoned the top three buttons of her blouse and slowly reached down in her cleavage, and pulled out a crumpled Twenty Dollar bill. He took the crumpled Twenty Dollar bill from her, and smiled approvingly. She then asked, "Have you ever seen Fifty Dollars all crumpled up?" "No I haven't," he said with an anxious tone in his voice. She gave him another sexy little smile, unzipped her skirt, letting It drop to the floor and seductively reached into her panties and pulled out a crumpled Fifty Dollar bill. He took the crumpled Fifty Dollar bill. "Now," she said, "Have you ever seen 50,000 Dollars all crumpled up?" "No way!" he said, even more curious to what would happen next. She replied: "Go look in the garage." A little while ago was my 56th birthday and I wasn't feeling too good that morning. I went to breakfast knowing my wife would be pleasant and say, "Happy Birthday!", and probably have a present for me. As it turned out, she didn't even say good morning, let alone happy birthday. I thought, well, that's wives for you, the children will remember. The children came in and didn't say a word to me. So when I left for the office, I was feeling pretty low and despondent.. As I walked into my office, my secretary Janet said, "Good morning, Boss, Happy Birthday". And I felt a little better that someone had remembered. I worked until noon, then Janet knocked on my door and said, "You know, it's such a beautiful day outside, and it's your birthday, let's go to lunch, just you and me." I said, "By George, that's the greatest thing I've heard all day. "Let's go!" We went to lunch We didn't go where we normally go; instead we went out to a private little place. We had two martinis and enjoyed lunch tremendously. On the way back to the office, she said, "You know, it's such a beautiful day. We don't need To go back to the office, do we?" I said, "No, I guess not." She said, "Let's go to my apartment." After arriving at her apartment she said, "Boss, if you don't mind, I think I'll go into the bedroom. "Sure!" I excitedly replied. She went into the bedroom and, in about six minutes, she came out carrying a huge birthday cake --- followed by my wife, children, and dozens of our friends, all singing Happy Birthday. And I just sat there ---- on the couch ---- naked.

Do all motorcyclists really "go down"? Really? ‘Do all motorcyclists’ really “go down?’

N

o. But anytime you get human beings, you can have human error. The bimbo texting and changing lanes. The dump truck driver doing 80 mph. The Type A guy who’s mad at his boss and swerving through traffic. Every one of these folks and hundreds of other examples are why junkyards are filled with cars – people don’t pay attention. Now, the simple fact is, when you get into a fenderbender in your Chevy Yukon XL with a curb weight of over 6,000 pounds, you walk away from it – you may have just turned a Mustang into a Fiesta, but for the most part, that wreck you have in your SUV or minivan is largely survivable – and may not even result in the first injury. Not so when the bike you’re on is 800 pounds (and you’re attached to it only with gravity) and you hit something ten times larger. Motorcycle crashes have a much higher chance of turning deadly. Now remember, in most states, getting a motorcycle license is a step past your basic driver’s license, so maybe “better” drivers are drawn to bikes. As far as if motorcyclists’ are somehow more likely to be in a wreck – that’s subjective. The man or woman who wants to ride is already cognizant of the differences and dangers – and accepts them. Not as an immediate death sentence, but we accept that fact that a crash is likely to change our lives forever. But when we strap on the leather and the helmet, we already know this, so I “think” (again – subjective) that we, collectively, pay better attention. In 20 years of riding, I’ve never seen another biker texting, drinking a beer, putting on makeup, yelling at a child, or eating a cheeseburger while riding. Yet I see all these things on a nearly daily basis taking place in cars. I’ve laid down a couple of bikes over the years and walked away only needing new riding leather, and in both cases, it was to avoid something really bad. Both were lower-speed, around-town incidents, never at highway speed, but I am not fooling myself thinking that if a car had been following closely, I wouldn’t have gone on to my great reward in the sky. But I didn’t….. And I got right back on the bike as soon as I had it patched up. Plenty of other folks over the years have sworn off bikes after a close call – just like I swore off bracket racing when I blew the bottom out of a tweaked up small block and lost control at 90 mph and the car started tumbling. It just depends on what odds you feel like bucking. Make no mistake, not one of us is getting out of this life alive, so is it better to live a safe, boring life filled with the ideas of what might have been or to actually embrace life for what it is and enjoy all of it while it lasts? I don’t want to die on a bike – or because of it – but I take the precautions that I know to take: I drive defensively, and I know that I have to be smarter than everybody else on the road. Simple things, really – I don’t drive in the rain if I can avoid it, I rarely drive far at night, and I try like crazy to avoid the busy roads. Give me a deserted highway and let me feel the sun on my face and the feel of 98 horsepower underneath me and if it’s my time to go, well, then I’ll go. …but I’m not planning on it. Why Is It!!!!!

for 1 YEAR

1. Does a clean house indicate that there is a broken computer in it? 2. Why is it that no matter what color of bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white? 3. Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? 4. Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? 5. On electric toasters, why do they engrave the message "one slice"? How many pieces of bread do they think people are really gonna try to stuff in that slot? 6. Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?

500 - $80 Black & White 500 - $30 228-596-0664

7. Why is it that no plastic garbage bag will open from the end you first try? 8. How do those dead bugs get into those closed light fixtures?

9. Considering all the lint you get in your dryer, if you kept drying your clothes would they eventually just disappear? 10. When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, "It's all right?" Well, it isn't all right so why don't we say, "That hurt!" 11. Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? 12. Is it true that the only difference between a yard sale and a trash pickup is how close to the road the stuff is placed? 13. In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? 14. How come you never hear father-inlaw jokes? 15. If at first you don't succeed, shouldn't you try doing it like your wife told you to do it? And obviously if at first you don't succeed, then don't take up sky diving! 16. The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends, if they're okay, then it's you.
