Project location

Our vision for the Parramatta River project is to create a vibrant and sustainable urban hub that thrives on the river's edge by putting our river first. We aim to build a community where residents, industries and businesses coexist harmoniously. Nature and modernity seamlessly blend, and connectivity, accessibility, and environmental stewardship are at the forefront while putting consideration of our country and first nation people during the entire design process.

Existing plan

My site is located on the right side of the mia site, separated by a tributary of the parramata river. The site is basically filled with an industrial area, with mainly large factory buildings, no public roads and poor accessibility. The cycling path along the river is completely isolated from the site and lacks connection to the riverbank.

The southern part of the site is cut through by light rail, the site is edged by lorry tracks and has poor environmental management almost no pedestrians

On the flood map The site’s flood risk areas are concentrated in these two parcels, a photograph of the site is shown below

Key Moves and Design Principles

My design principle is to create a liveable community living zone along the river, so that it surrounds the light industrial area with good river view and vegetation, and the whole site forms an eco district.

Existing green space and lot

Based on the previous flood analysis, we have designated flood-prone areas as green space and open space

Determine road network and river sight lines based on existing buildings and lot

Opposite the green space will be developed into a livable community, with some offices and a converted factory exhibition center as a buffer between the community and the industry in order to isolate the negative impacts of the industry

Livable community offices and a industrial artwork center as a buffer

Pedestrian-friendly water frontage

Existing plan

The previous idea is continued in my design plan, with some of the dwellings next to the green space.

On the north side, cars are prohibited and the driveway extends in the form of a lollipop into the interior of the block. Along the river, the building supports residential functions such as libraries and childcare, and youth education.

South ST, as the main street through the site, needs to be developed with businesses along the street to activate the street and become a pedestrian friendly main street

On the south side, the building faces the river view and extends the green space along the river into the neighborhood to form a green group. There is frequent truck traffic on this road, so we set up a truck service area with a parking area and storage on the ground floor and a dining and rest area for workers on the upper floor.

I designed a functional transformation of the original factory, with the left side as an office area and a buffer zone for the factory.

I utilized the existing building as much as possible by transforming the factory into a shopping mall. Because of his unique location, it not only serves the residents, but also supports the university on the left and cyclists .

This pink building is also a converted industrial factory, and I referenced the way Carriageworks functions with art exhibitions and bazaars.
