Project Description:
Construction of a new 69/12kV substation on the island of Brigantine and retirement of the existing Harbor Beach substation. The new masonry block building, which sits above the flood plain, houses a 69kV GIS ring bus, 12kV breaker-and-a-half switchgear, all relaying and controls, and all auxiliary equipment. Next to the building are two 69/12kV 56MVA LTC transformers with protective firewalls and oil containment systems. The existing 23/12kV substation on the same property remained inservice for the duration of construction and was retired/ demolished after all distribution circuits were cutover. Also installed new 69kV transmission lines to feed the new station. Constructed two (2) 69kV transmission dual duct banks approximately 3 miles long and 3 miles of overhead transmission line monopole construction.
Competitive Edge Impact:
There are eighteen local craft and professional interns. Interns were given 29 hours a week at salary. All graduates complete OSHA 30 Hour training. Students receive training on electrical theory, handson experience, blueprint reading to be placed on the Harbor Beach project.
Program Management Contract (PMC) - Susquehanna
Location: Central Pennsylvania

Project Description:
Rebuilding and reinforcing PPL Electric Utilities’ 69kV and 138kV transmission lines, deploying transmission automation technology and fiber connectivity, rebuilding existing substations, and adding new facilities including greenfield transmission lines and substations from 230kV to 500kV. Included over thirty (30) separate “super-projects” spread across the Susquehanna region of Pennsylvania. The individual super-projects range in value of $2 - $150 million. The overall goal of the program is intended to enhance system reliability, operability, maintainability and safety, and enable PPL to achieve its reliability, capacity, load growth and market efficiency objectives.
Community Impact:
With the assistance of this project, the enhancements allowed over $90 million in savings. Outages in the local area decreased by 92%, so the neighboring regions have more continous electrical service. Failures due to storms are reduced by over 77%. Consumers get to enjoy more uptime and long-term monetary savings.
