Introduction A Look Ahead…….. Hello Marshall Key Club! On behalf of the new board, I can say that we are all ready to serve you for the 2013-2014 Key Club term and can’t wait to see what the year will hold in store for us. Already in March, we’re starting the new Key Club year with many new fun service events like Marathon Kids, and volunteering for Matt Szabo’s campaign for the March election. Franklinpalooza enabled us to reach out to our community and assist them in their annual festival of food and fun. We’re off the ground running fresh out of DCON with our new board ready for SERVICE! As the new term begins, I encourage everyone to actively participate in the plethora of events we have in store for you and look forward to recording the year’s endeavors.  Your New Bulletin Editor, Raymond Lobaton

Marathon Kids: The Final Mile

Marathon Kids is an non-profit organization committed to improving the health of children by providing motivation to keep an active lifestyle. I heard about this organization from the usual monthly volunteer work search, and thought it was a great opportunity to explore a new part of Los Angeles and raise awareness of maintaining a healthy body. Unfortunately, only one person decided to help me, Zhitong, but I am glad to have experienced this with her. During the Final Mile at Exposition Park, I encountered a stadium of young people, energized and eager in learning new ways to exercise, listening about inspirational life stories, and influencing others to do the same, to keep moving. Of the several tasks available throughout the event, I had the job of cheering for the young runners, shouting, "You can do it!" or "One mile left!" Reaching my hand and giving the children high-fives left me in pure bliss, I believe this was our greatest interactive duty. The most rewarding sight of this event was watching the children race one another to pass the finish line. Their face was filled with glee as they thought about finally completing the 26.2 miles they accumulated in a three month period. I could never imagine myself committing to a run as lengthy as that!

After deciding to follow the final group to finish the mile, I found each child beaming in accomplishment as they received their medal. Of course, there was another happening that day as well, the "Run or Dye" marathon, but I definitely believe this was much more worthwhile, especially after taking a lesson that I can apply to my own lifestyle. Marathon Kids is a spectacular method in teaching the younger generation to get moving. Rather than committing time to technology, television, and video games, taking a walk or run will always prove as a better alternative. -Marian Montano


Matt Szabo Campaign

The members of John Marshall Key Club had the exciting opportunity to volunteer to help Matt Szabo in his race to be elected into our City Council District 13. With chances to help out after school and on the weekends, it offered invaluable experience into the world of politics and provided many with the knowledge working a telephone and a team-oriented environment. We were all more than happy to assist a community leader in his endeavor to join the City Council!

During the month of February and the beginning of March, many students from our school had the opportunity to volunteer for a candidate running for City Council District 13. I, luckily, was able to help out Matt Szabo’s campaign and encouraged people in my community to use their voice in the election on March 5. At first I helped out because I wanted to get out of doing a project in one of my classes, but the more time I spent around local politics, I saw myself dedicated to the cause. I became a student who wanted her voice heard and wanted to make a difference in her community. Coming to a supporter's home after a long day of school to spend another 4 hours working, doesn’t seem that appealing to students, but it was well worth it. We spent those 4 hours per day, 3 times a week for 1 month, making phone calls encouraging people to vote for Matt Szabo and writing addresses on letters that were going to be mailed out to my neighbors, telling them how amazing the candidate was. It was a great learning experience because I figured out how to take rejection really well and how to educate people on a certain cause. It also had a really friendly environment and good food. Overall, I’m really glad I volunteered because I learned so much that I will take with me as I grow as a person.

LA Marathon

I experienced a lot of things at the L.A. Marathon 2013 key club event. My friends and I were given bright orange shirts and metals that were just beautiful. Our group was assigned to pass out metals along with other key clubbers at the finish line which was really cool, because I was able to award runners after they completed the marathon. There was also much diversity amongst the runners; from old to young, and adults to children from different backgrounds. I even saw some runners cry as they finished, and I was instantly touched and moved because I saw how happy they were. I cheered and congratulated so many people, and I thought for a while, if they can do something this challenging, so can I. Some runners hugged me and thanked me for volunteering, and also said that volunteers are what help a community become better. Along the way I met and talked to new people, made new friends, and of course, new memories. I felt like I stepped outside my comfort zone, and put myself out there, even if it was only for a few hours. I'm honestly glad I volunteered because my perspective of things has changed. For example, donating a few hours of my time gave me a lifetime of unforgettable memories. This event, in my opinion, was one of the best I've ever done, because I enjoyed so many exciting and new things while serving my community.

Franklinpalooza

I was happy to volunteer at Franklin Elementary for their “Franklinpalooza.� I was actually nervous at first because I didn't know who was going, but that didn't stop me from volunteering. When I went there I was kind of lost, but then I met two new people and they helped me. One of them was this nice woman and she told me how she used to go to John Marshall. She was really nice. Anyways, our job was to tell them how much the desserts cost and they'd pay us tickets. At first, it was going slow and not that many people would come and get desserts. But later towards the end so many people came and everyone was talking all at once and we had to serve so many people. We were so busy that I even got my friend who wasn't even in key club to help. Even though we were really busy we had fun. It should've ended at 6:30 but there were still a lot of people. They told us we could leave, but we chose to stay instead. When it finally ended we helped them clean up. It was a really great experience. They were so grateful that we stayed and help that they gave us a lot of food before we left. I'm happy I got to volunteer. I met a lot of nice people and I hope to do this again.

Franklinpalooza was a grand experience among many of the great key club events I participated in this year. My role in this event was to sell desserts donated by the many families of Franklin Avenue Elementary hoping to raise funds this beautiful school. It was such a sweet treat, seeing the shining faces and beaming smiles of children as I gave them their cupcakes, brownies, or anything else their hearts (or stomachs) desired. Although it wasn't easy, keeping up with the quick demands of the little children, I knew it was worth all the while when I received the heartwarming "thanks" from the other adult volunteers in preparation for my departure from the school. I'll never forget the glowing smiles of the kids or the kindness of the adults in this truly special event. -Khoa Tran


Member of the Month Khoa Tran

John Marshall Key Club is proud to say that Khoa Tran is a new wolf in our ohana! Khoa attended one or two events in the beginning of the year, but for the month of March, he began to be an active member of our Key Club. When volunteering for the Chinatown Firecracker 10K, Ivanhoe Elementary's Book Fair, Franklin Elementary's Franklinpalooza, and the recent March DCM and Marshall Social, he became more and more interested in Key Club and what it really is. He is extremely lucky to have started Key Club and serving the community as a freshman! This wolf will surely make a lasting impact in our community in his next three years of Key Club! -Written by Marian Montano


Officer of the Month Ernestine Hong Junior Class Representative

John Marshall Key Club would like to honor Ernestine Hong as Officer of the Month for March. We have just started out term and Ernestine has already taken initiative in organizing the month’s events, including the Marathon Kids Final Mile, Franklinpalooza, and the LA Marathon. This March, she volunteered for the Los Angeles Marathon, cheering on runners, helping provide refreshments, and handing out medals at the end of the run. She is committed in completing her work to the fullest and is always eager to give a hand to any officer who needs help in forming the event, as well as advertise for members to attend. Furthermore, she dedicated her time in assisting Chantal Mendoza, our IP Historian, to complete a scrapbook for the 2012 – 2013 term.

Finally, for our first club social, she led a team to establish the event at Griffith Park, even setting a team to provide food for the day. Her famous lemonade won everyone’s approval. Ernestine is a spectacular individual to work with, and we hope that her skills and orderliness will impact others to work as hard as her.
