Letter from the Editor Table of Contents 2013’s finally passed us gang, and the New Year awaits. What are your resolutions? Not to procrastinate? To try harder in school? To put in more dedicated service time? They are all worthy crusades, but through all the stress and tumult that school life may bring we can’t forget that there is always a way for us to help people less fortunate. If you weren’t able to go to as many events as you would have liked this year, no worries! 2014 will play host to a plethoric number of service opportunities! While May seems years away, DCON is fast approaching: if you plan on attending start saving your pennies now! Elections are also right around the corner, meaning the induction of our new board with the Immediate Past status of our current officers, and the eminent departure of this year’s senior class.  But that’s still a ways away! For now, we have the month of January to entertain with all its service opportunities. May your New Year be filled with prosperity and opportunity Wolfgang! Your Editor, Raymond Lobaton

Second World Lifestyle Festival

Second World Lifestyle Festival (contd.)

The Second Annual World Lifestyle Festival was surely a new experience for our wolves and myself. It began with a cold, below 50 degree, morning in Van Nuys where our dedicated wolves and myself had arrived before the doors to the OneGeneration Senior Enrichment Center were open. Although, after introducing ourselves and becoming acquainted with the other volunteers from CSUN, we jumped straight to assisting anyone in need. The first tasks I was assigned was to make even MORE posters and signs to direct the guests, although my sister and I had already created several the night before. Later, I sat outside with other volunteers whilst sipping on some more coffee from Starbucks (that was gladly donated) and began greeting guests, vendors, and more volunteers who took their time to spread diabetes awareness and healthy living! Although we encountered a few struggles and a lot of chaos, the day flew by. Lastly, it was wonderful to see the senior citizens active (dancing and tai chi) and even more satisfying to see our fellow wolves joining them! The day ended when we had to put the building back into order; moving tables, organizing chairs, etc. and gathering in a circle to congratulate the entire team of volunteers on a good days work. OUR team of wolves left that day with much gratitude as the "thank you’s" flooded out the door behind us. Ernestine Hong

Rose Parade Float Decorating

The Rose Parade has been associated with New Year’s Day for 125 years, and spotlights the artistic achievements of organizations near and far through magnificent and larger-than-life floats made almost entirely out of flowers. Kiwanis and our very own John Marshall Key Club went out on the 26th and 31st of December to help out decorating the many floats, even having one for the Kiwanis themselves! The beauty of the flowers and grandiosity of the floats made it an experience, and if you weren’t able to come out this time you definitely should at year’s end.

Member of the Month

For the month of December, the member of the month is Ami Patel! This month, Ami, a junior in John Marshall’s Key Club, proved that volleyball players can be committed to service just as they are on the court. Ami’s dedication in participating in community events skyrocketed this month, especially in helping with the Rose Float decorating. Her energetic persona refreshed the working atmosphere from morning to night as she and her fellow key clubbers meticulously cut flowers and decorate floats. Aside for Key Club, Ami is a stellar student and active athlete. She strives to not only do what she can for her neighborhood, but also for her school as a member in John Marshall’s Leadership committee. As a hardworking member of countless clubs and organizations, Ami is truly deserving of this Member Recognition. John Marshall’s Key Club is glad to have her; she is a delight to have around and will definitely contribute to her community’s prosperity.

Officer of the Month

For the month of December, the member of the month is Arbyn Olarte! This month, Arbyn, our Sophomore Class Representative, took his time to form an even stronger bond between the John Marshall’s Key Club board and the club members. His thoughtfulness in helping the behind the scenes – execute dates for our club’s service, prepare members to grow more acquainted with volunteer opportunities, and fuel members’ spirits over the Holiday vacation – is all our club can ever hope for during this season of giving and kindness. Arbyn’s time rose float decorating helped the board and members come together like never before. His natural gift of giving back to the community is infectious, and his sense of humor always lights up the room. Arbyn is a true Key Clubber – respectful to others and always conscious of uniting his community. We are always grateful to him as an officer and know that though the year may be over, his

good habits and lasting impression on all of us will carry on to the new year.
