1. Letter from the Editor

the Wolfgang…..

I don’t know what rhymes with Wolfgang that fits here BUT, the point is IT’S THE MONTH BEFORE CHRISTMAS! I hope you all had your fill of your turkey, and are hungry for some more service! Some cliché’s just never get old.  To all who attended Fall Rally, both new and returning members alike, on behalf of all the board I hope you had an amazing and enlightening experience at Magic Mountain. Besides Fall Rally, November played host to the Universal Backlot 15k: a race attracting runners and volunteers from across the state dedicated to Saying No To Drugs. We Run the City pitted the Trojans against the Bruins in an ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny: an age old conflict that went down in order to sponsor the 2015 Special Olympics and grant one side well-deserved bragging rights. This month, we have the Atwater Tree Lighting to look forward to as well as the Second World Lifestyle Festival. In short, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Send out 2013 in a hail of service Wolfgang! Your Bulletin Editor, Raymond Lobaton

Cali-Nev-Ha Fall Rally Every Key Clubber has heard of Fall Rally, but many simply equate it to Magic Mountain admission at a reduced price, and that’s all she wrote. There is, in fact, much more to Fall Rally than that. The CNH Cyberkey explains: “Due to the District's massive size, two Fall Rallies are held each year; one in Northern California at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, one in Southern California at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Thousands of members gather at each of the two theme parks on their selected day, one in October, one in November. At Fall Rally North and South, LTGs and Executive officers are "auctioned" off to Divisions; the winning Division is able to then spend a designated period of time with the "purchased" officer. Auction funds and a portion of the ticket sales for both events go towards the Pediatric Trauma Program.” It’s really ingenious: it’s service even when it doesn’t seem like it! Money accrued is dedicated to Pediatric Trauma Program, a charity in close affiliation with Key Club. So whether you were in it for the rides or for the spirit, you did your part for PTP, and for that we thank you!

When I heard about Fall Rally the first time from previous Key Club members I knew I wanted to go. But there was more behind riding the rollercoasters, hanging out with your friends, and meeting other Key Club members. We were there to help raise money for children in the Pediatric Trauma Program. Not only was fundraising the most important part but winning the Spirit Battle was, too. Fall Rally was an event that filled my mind with curiosity and excitement. I was full of adrenaline as we got off the bus and I knew the moment was here. When we finished fundraising, our division (D3S) was in their Spirit Battle mode. Sadly, we ended up in second place. I was sad but I know next year we’ll kick some [bootays]. Overall, the experience was absolutely fantastic. I enjoyed meeting new people and getting hugs from random Key Club members. -Elizabeth Kennedy

Universal Backlot 15k On November 17, 2013, I along with 3 others attended the Universal 15k race as volunteers for Division 3 South. We arrived at the event before the sun had even risen at the early time of 5:30 AM. Prior to the start of the race, our jobs as volunteers were to set up our assigned table, display the disgusting power bars, and keep people off the street where the preparations were taking place. Our table was at the end of the race, so once the race had started we had a little time to ourselves. While we waited, we met other volunteers; one was named Kirby and he actually had gone to Marshall and was a past Key Club member, and we had befriended another volunteer who would give us a ride back to the street afterwards. ! As the runners began to finish the race, our job was to hand out the Power Bars on the table. It was a great feeling seeing the tired faces of the runners immediately brighten up after receiving a power bar! Once the race had finished, the four of us split up into pairs to help clean up the mess the runners had made, and we had met some members of Division 25 East’s Key Club. In the end, it was a very fun volunteering experience: one which I wish more people from our division would have attended.

On Sunday, November 17, 2013 three members from our Key Club volunteered alongside our LTG and volunteers from many other schools at the Universal Backlot 15k. It was an event for the early riser or the avid server: volunteer check-in was 5:30 a.m. sharp. Alexander Gonzales and I were first on set and were put to work moving tables, transporting water, and eating doughnuts in that order. As other volunteers trickled in and the runners started appearing the four of us got our stations: manning the snacks at the finish line. But they weren’t just any snacks: they were Power Bars. What are Power Bars? In my very biased and normative opinion: disgusting. But they jolted your body with energy, if not from the packed nutrients then the “unique” taste. The whole day was dedicated to Saying No to Drugs in a run sponsored by Students Run LA: a very noble cause which I am proud to have helped along.

Member of the Month

For the month of November, the member of the month is Edward Diaz! This month, Edward, a senior at John Marshall High School, attended the Dorris Place Fall Festival and the annual Key Club Fall Rally South! At Dorris Place, Edward not only showed his amiability with his fellow key clubbers, but also his compassion for young students’ music talents! He gathered many volunteers to serve food and helped Dorris Place Elementary fundraise for musical instruments children would have access to over their school year! At Fall Rally South, Edward proved to everyone that he was indeed one of the most spirited wolves in the theme park! He participated in all the activities and even helped new members get better acquainted with cheers and other Division members. Edward is an excellent example of how a truly motivated and spirited key clubber must act. He welcomes everyone to his pack, whether they may be new or old members. We are proud to have Edward as one of our prime leaders in our club and school! -Papkoom Sarjai Vice President

Officer of the Month

For the month of November, the officer of the month is Anna Enriquez! This month John Marshall’s hardworking President, Anna, has shown to not only her club, but to her entire Division 3 South, that she is capable of overturning all obstacles thrown at her. She organizes large interesting events for her members to participate in such as the Dorris Place Fall Festival, the Kimchi Making Volunteering Event, and the Canned Food Drive! Anna’s preparations and passion shows her undying respect and dedication to her club. Before Fall Rally South, she even made sure that everyone in her club attending knew where to go at what time, how to prepare for spirit battles, and what to do to get to know other key clubbers from other divisions. Anna genuinely demonstrates all of Key Club’s values through her actions and spirit. John Marshall’s Key Club is thankful to have Anna as our President. She has attained a feat not many are able to accomplish, well roundedness in academics and sociability. The term isn’t over yet, so all of us are eager to know what Anna will have in store for us next! -Marian Montano Vice President
