CARING Our Way of Life

Letter from the Editor Table of Contents WOLFGANG! Fall Rally is less than two weeks away, ARE YOU EXCITED?! Fall Rally! The premier event where Key Clubbers from all over the Cali-Nev-Ha District congregate to shout, yell, and cheer in the name of spirit and charity; are YOU going to be there? It’s still a few weeks away, and in between then and now there are more service opportunities to partake in. Just this past month we took part in the AIDS Walk LA as a Division, and brought our spirit to the streets of West Hollywood. Our annual Kiwanis Duck Splash was also in early October as was our DCM, or Division Council Meeting. We ended the month with a volunteering event at Dorris Place Elementary to help save their music program! Being a member of a multilateral organization as Key Club offers many wonderful opportunities to serve and to lead; after all caring is our way of life. I invite all of you, new members and old, to keep up the amazing service work you have demonstrated thus far in the year. Consider Fall Rally as being a reward for all you’ve done and motivation to do even more. November has a multitude of fun events in store for us, so mark those dates and I hope to see you at them!

AIDS Walk 2013 My experience at AIDS Walk was very exciting. I enjoyed cheering alongside and against other schools. I also enjoyed meeting new people from other schools and realizing how large our Key Club ohana truly is! What I enjoyed most was the food they provided. We walked to raise awareness for AIDS and to raise money for research towards its cure, and got some nice snacks and food in the process. After completely finishing the walk I got a nice certificate of completion and an amazing feeling that I had helped to cure what has been known as an incurable disease. -Colleen Eng AIDS Walk is an event that I have done for the past four years. Walking with Key Club is an event like no other. Interacting with not only our school club, I was able to see schools from our division and schools from our region. It was a really great experience for me personally because I was able to see how so many people came together to raise awareness and raise funds in order to help find a cure for AIDS. It was really fun for me as well because I was able to walk with my friends and ask them how the felt about doing the walk itself and asking them "HOW DO YOU FEEL?!" Moreover, the experience with Key Club was even more special to me because it was the very first event I did with Key Club the year before. I actually remember losing my voice in doing cheers because I was so enthusiastic with just the event itself. It held very sentimental value to me knowing that it'd be my last year walking AIDS Walk as a key club member. I definitely made the best out of it, taking any memories with me.

AIDS Walk is an event intended to raise money and awareness for curing AIDS, a virulent disease very prevalent in and extremely relevant to our world today. Millions of people are afflicted by this currently incurable disease, and the purpose of the walk is to fundraise and gain popular support for the ever growing crusade against what has been considered a death sentence for so long and to so many. As a walker I was one of the many who came out to show my support for the cause, alongside the majority of our club and those of the Division. The spirit was electrifying, not only from the Key Clubs present, but the other organizations we walked with: many of which just as spirited and engaged as we were: it was definitely a sight to see and engagement to attend. This was my second year walking the AIDS Walk, and I hope to round off my highschool experience with a third next year. -Raymond Lobaton Club Editor

-Joan Maranan On October 13, 2013 I volunteered at the Los Angeles Aids Walk along with my friends. It was crowded and cold in the morning but as we started walking, the day got hotter and the streets more crowded. It was a beautiful day to walk for such an amazing cause! There were many key clubbers from different schools and so much cheering and spirit from our Division. The best part about this event was knowing that I was walking for a good cause. The fact that our school had such a large response and presence at the walk only motivated me more to take part in it, and I am truly glad I did. All in all, walking the AIDS Walk this year was an amazing experience. -Rachel Umaguing

Dorris Place Fall Festival On November 1 at the Dorris Place Fall Festival, I volunteered to help serve food and work at different game booths. The volunteers were able to put smiles on people's faces with their friendly manner and amazing service. The Fall Festival was an event to help raise money to save Dorris Place's instrumental music program. I was extremely glad to help be part of this by volunteering. Volunteering brings a great smile to my face because it makes me happy to be able to make others smile and to help out in any way I can. I love being able to give back to the community whenever I can. It's a nice feeling to help others. I was also able to make new friends and meet new people. It was a great opportunity to be around people and just have an overall great time. -Danica Tagorda

Volunteering at the Dorris Place Annual Fall Festival was a total blast! This is actually my second year volunteering and it hasn’t disappointed! Not only was it fun, I was able to reunite with some old friends who attended the elementary school. The amount of activities, games, and prizes available were bountiful, and we cannot forget about the food! My tasks were to assist game booths and food booths. I got to interact with the excited children who would instantly smile when they won a game and got their tickets, which they would later turn in for prizes: most adorable thing ever! Furthermore, this annual festival doesn’t just bring our community together; the money raised from this event goes towards their music program which was on track to getting canceled because no funds were being raised to help keep it. Being a Dorris Place alumni and having been in the music program there, I feel that it is very important that I try to help in any way I can to allow the children to also have that experience I had. -Sreymich Lach
