OTTO ALDER

Otto Alder tem trabalhado como curador de programação, como jurado, e em comités de seleção em vários festivais. Começou por organizar o Festival Internacional de Animação de Estugarda (de 1987 a 91) e mais tarde foi diretor do programa de animação do Festival de Leipzig (1992 – 2005). Foi co-fundador e co-diretor do Festival Fantoche (1994 – 2004). Dirigiu ainda o programa de Animação no Black Night Film Festival em Tallinn (1999-2002) e no Animation Festival Tough Eye em Turku (2001-2003). Em 2009 foi eleito Presidente Honorário do Festival de Animação de Ottawa. Fundador e diretor artístico da International Animation Academy em 2009, em 2011 Alder tornou-se membro da Swiss Film Academy e da APSA (Asia Pacific Screen Academy, Brisbane). Para além de criar os seus próprios filmes, fotografia e instalações artísticas, de 2002 a 2019 lecionou História da Imagem em Movimento e História da Animação no Departamento de Animação da Universidade de Artes e Ciências Aplicadas de Lucerne, do qual foi co-director de 2004 a 2010. É membro da ASIFA (foi diretor de conselho de 1993 a 1998). Otto Alder is working as a program curator and is serving at juries and selection committees for festivals. Starting off in animation organising Stuttgart Int. Animation Festival (1987 till 1992) he later rendered his services as the director of the animation programme at the Leipzig Festival (1992 – 2005). Alder is co-founder and was co-director of Fantoche International Animation Festival (1994 – 2004). In addition he directed the animation programme at Black Night Film Festival in Tallinn (1999-2002) as well as the Animation Festival Tough Eye in Turku (2001-2003). 2009 he was selected Honorary President of the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Furthermore Alder was founder and artistic director of Lucerne International Animation Academy 2009 (LIAA - https://animation-luzern.ch/2020/02/19/ liaa/). In 2011 he became member of the Swiss Film Academy and APSA (Asia Pacific Screen Academy, Brisbane). Besides creating his own films, photographs and installations. From 2002 till 2019 he was teaching history of moving images and animation history as professor at the animation departement of Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and was the departments co-director from 2004 till 2010. He is member of ASIFA (director of board 1993 –1998).

JOAN GRATZ

Joan Gratz é uma realizadora de curtas-metragens de animação e spots comerciais premiada com um Oscar. O conteúdo dos seus filmes é variado e vai desde expressões pictóricas de poesia, à abstração improvisada e ao documentário social animado. Foi pioneira na técnica de “Claypainting”. Trabalha diretamente à frente da câmera, aplicando pedaços de barro, misturando cores e desenhando finas linhas para criar um fluxo perfeito de imagens. “Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase”, uma história da arte animada, ganhou o Óscar em 1992. Joan Gratz is an Academy Award winning director of animated short films and commercials. Her films range in content through painterly expressions of poetry, improvised abstraction, and animated social documentary. The technique she pioneered is “Claypainting.” Working directly before the camera, she applies bits of clay, blends colors and etches fine lines to create a seamless flow of images. Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase, an animated history of art, won the Oscar in 1992.

REGINA PESSOA

Regina Pessoa nasceu em Coimbra e licenciou-se em Pintura pela

Faculdade de Belas Artes do Porto. Em 1992 começou a trabalhar em animação como animadora nos filmes “Os Salteadores”, “Fado

Lusitano” e “Clandestino” todos de Abi Feijó. Em 1996 começa a realizar os seus próprios filmes de animação: “A Noite" (1999), "História Trágica com Final Feliz" (2005), "Kali o Pequeno Vampiro" (2012) e "Tio Tomás a Contabilidade dos Dias" (2019), com os quais obtém um grande reconhecimento e ganha inúmeros prémios nos principais festivais e eventos mundiais, tornando-se uma referência incontornável da Animação Portuguesa e reconhecida recentemente no Top 3 dos melhores realizadores mundiais dos últimos 25 anos (Animac’2021). Três dos seus filmes fazem parte da lista de filmes do Plano Nacional de Cinema, e são estudados por crianças e jovens das escolas Portuguesas.

Em 2016 torna-se “Senior Lecturer” na escola de Animação Alemã

FILMAKADEMIE e em 2018 é convidada para ser membro da Academia de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas de Hollywood. Regina Pessoa was born in Coimbra and graduated in Painting in the Faculdade de Belas Artes, Porto. In 1992, she began working in animation as an animator for the movies “Os Salteadores”, “Fado Lusitano” and “Clandestino”, all directed by Abi Feijó. In 1996, she began directing her own animated films: “A Noite” (1999), “História Trágica com Final Feliz” (2005), “Kali o Pequeno Vampiro” (2012) and “Tio Tomás e a Contabilidade dos Dias” (2019), those of which would grant her great recognition and win her a number of awards in major festivals and world events (Annecy, Annie Awards, Hiroshima, … ). She would become an essential reference in Portuguese Animation and recently recognized as part of the Top 3 best world directors in the last 25 years (Animac’2021). Three of her films are part of the films list of the Plano Nacional de Cinema and are studied in Portuguese schools. In 2016, she became Senior Lecturer at the German Animation School Filmakademie and in 2018 was invited to be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood.

Em 1588, um náufrago da Armada Invencível, enviada de Portugal por Felipe II para conquistar Inglaterra, é capturado numa praia da Irlanda. Aí é julgado, declarado culpado e enforcado, acabando por morrer. Tudo isto seria razoável segundo as leis da guerra e do ódio entre seres humanos, o problema é que o prisioneiro é um macaco. In 1588, a castaway from the Invincible Fleet, sent from Portugal by Felipe II to conquer England, is captured in an Irish beach. There she is judged, found guilty and hung to die. This is reasonable according to the war rules and the hatred felt by human beings, the problem is that the prisoner is a monkey

Deitado na cama de um pequeno quarto, um homem está num impasse, incapaz de decidir. No quarto minimalista e na cidade geométrica, o tempo está suspenso, dentro e fora dele. Enquanto isso, um homem observa, ao lado de umas flores secas, vermelhas. Inação. Pressionado pela repulsa e pelo desespero, parece vislumbrar-se brevemente uma saída: entre ciclos de análise e sequências quebradas, a possibilidade do erro. Lying on the bed of a small room, a man is in a stalemate, unable to decide. Time is suspended within and outside of him, in the minimalist room and in the geometric city. In between this another man observes, side by side with some red dried flowers. Inaction. Pushed by disgust and despair, a very brief glimpse of an exit seems to unroll: between cycles of analysis and broken sequences, the possibility of mistake.

Uma menina perde-se da mãe e recusa-se a sair do mesmo lugar. Um polícia impede todos os outros de a obrigarem a mexer. A menina parada e o polícia que a guarda param o trânsito e agitam os corações da cidade. A little girl gets separated from her mom and refuses to move from where she is. A police officer stops everyone around from making her move. The standing girl and the policeman guarding her manage to stop traffic only to shake the city dwellers' hearts.

Um grande grupo de pessoas junta-se à mesa para uma refeição. Não sabemos se são família ou amigos. A comida é servida numa atmosfera barulhenta. Ao longo da refeição vamos conhecendo as várias figuras do grupo, ouvindo as suas conversas e conseguimos adivinhar a ligação entre elas. Fazem brindes e cantam os parabéns. A dada altura uns já dormem, outros leem, e outros namoram. O ambiente está cada vez mais fragmentado. No final, restam apenas pratos sujos e silêncio. A large group of people gather around a table for a meal. It is not clear whether they are family or friends. Food is served under a noisy atmosphere. Throughout the meal we discovered the various figures of the group, listened to their conversations and we can guess the connections between them. Toasts are made and congratulations are sung. At some point there are already those who sleep, who read, who date. The environment is increasingly fragmented. In the end there is only dirty dishes and silence.

Muhammad is a 13 years old Muslim and lives in Amadora, Lisbon. He likes to watch airplanes with his dad. He likes maths, English language and playing games with his friends. At school, he gets along with everyone, but sometimes, out of the blue, there can be unexpected teasing... Community Heroes is part of ReThink, an EU sponsored campaign against religious discrimination.

Vive ciclos de precariedade cada vez mais próximos. Os dias chegam pesando sobre o corpo cansado, lugar de todos os combates. Memória salvadora: acede-se ao tempo, o futuro é possível. Ela dança. Tomando cada gesto como um refrão, voltará aos poucos a apropriar-se do que a rodeia. Ela vestirá o seu corpo como uma luva. A woman is confined to her home. She is unemployed, as if exiled from the opportunities of her time. Closed inside herself. She goes through cycles of precarity, ever closer. Days weighing heavily on the tired body, the dwelling of all struggles. Liberating memory: Reaching into time, the future is possible. She dances. With every turn, a chorus. She is repossessing her being-in-the world. She will dress her body like a glove.

“Wanna Be Basquiat” é uma curta experimental/videoclipe que segue uma narrativa algo abstracta sobre o desenvolvimento industrial e suburbano, e sobre o sonho da prosperidade, usando centenas de recortes de imagens e cinema antigos. “Wanna Be Basquiat” is an experimental short film/music video that follows a somewhat abstract narrative about industrial and suburban development, and the dream of prosperity, using hundreds of clippings from vintage images and film.

Dois peixes, verde e laranja, nadam num universo fantástico. Entram entram numa perseguição animada, criando várias metamorfoses nos espaços em que estão. Cada transformação representa uma fase da relação da sua relação, entrecortadas com excertos do poema. Two fish, green and orange swim in a fantastic universe. The two enter into an animated pursuit generating several metamorphoses in the spaces in which they are. Each transformation represents a different phase of the relationship between the two, interpolated with excerpts from the poem.
