RED

The Dallas Division of the American Heart Association will host the 2013 Go Red for Women Luncheon on Friday, February 1st at the Hilton Anatole. This year, the luncheon will feature former First Lady Laura Bush as the keynote speaker. Mrs. Bush is the Founding Ambassador of The Heart Truth and has long been a high-profile champion for women’s issues. One in 31 women will die from breast cancer, while one in three will die from some form of cardiovascular disease, which remains the number one health threat facing women of all backgrounds. Though many don’t realize their risk levels, heart disease continues to claim hundreds of thousands of lives unnecessarily each year. Currently, some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. The Go Red for Women Luncheon focuses on preventing heart disease and stroke by promoting healthy lifestyles and raising money to support awareness, education and research of heart health in women. The luncheon will feature incredible stories from passionate survivors and a keynote address from Mrs. Bush. Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in the silent auction, breakout sessions and receive a free and private health screening provided by Texas Health Resources. The 2013 Dallas Heart Luncheon is co-chaired by Kate Rose Marquez and Virginia Rose. Ms. Rose is Vice President for Strategic Planning and Business Development at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. The luncheon is open to the public. Registration, health screenings and silent auction open at 10:00 am. Breakout sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. and the luncheon begins at 12:00 p.m. Tickets are $ 150 each and are available by visiting www.heart.org.-Sally Blanton

Forty-Seven Debutantes will be presented at the 27th Annual Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Presentation Ball at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 2 at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Tickets are $300 for adults and $150 for youth. Kay Weeks is Ball Chairman and Bob and Myrna Schlegel are Honorary Chairpersons. Sharon Barbee serves as the DSOL President. The ball is the ending event for the season of Debutante parties for the Debs, Honor Guard and their families. The presentation will be followed by a seated dinner and dancing. To recap, the Dallas Symphony Debutantes were honored at a cocktail buffet reception at the Meyerson in November. The evening was the start of the holiday weekend activities which included a mixer for the debs and honor guards, as well as a Bow Boot Camp for the debs. Jeweler Richard Eiseman hosted a reception on Tuesday, December 4 at his NorthPark store. The party was chaired by Sandy Petruska and her daughter Courtney, a former debutante who made her debut in 2004. The Petruska’s first chaired the party together in 2005 and have continued since that time. “We love doing this because it is a way to give back to the community,” said Sandy Petruska. “The money raised from the ball will benefit the education and community engagement programs of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.” A mother-daughter holiday tea was held at the home of Lisa and Kenny Troutt on December 19 and Cynthia and Brice Beaird opened their home for a holiday party on December 20. The Presentation Ball, first held in 1987, is the largest fundraiser for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League. More than $9 million has been raised from this annual event. Proceeds will benefit the Community and Engagement programs of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. 2013 Theme is Joie de Vivre ✯

Bunny Cotten is this year’s chair. Regular tickets are $100 and Patron tickets are $275. Caren Prothro is this year’s Honorary Chair. This year’s theme is Joie de Vivre - a French phrase to express the cheerful enjoyment of life and is a celebration of the League, including our donors, Sustainers, Actives and Provisionals, and the amazing work that the volunteers do! The Junior League of Dallas is unique in their ability to combine donations along with volunteer woman-power to improve the Dallas community using a “handson approach.” At the Ball, they will feature one of Billboard’s 2011 Artists to Watch, Andy Grammer, whose first single “Keep Your Head Up” appeared in the top five on the adult pop chart. His debut album grabbed the the No. 1 spot on the Billboard New Artist Chart in the first week. Grammer’s new single “Miss Me” was recently featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Guests will be able to say “we saw him just as his career was taking off!” The Junior League of Dallas is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Founded in 1922, the Junior League of Dallas, Inc. trains members for effective participation in the community and is dedicated to the belief that volunteer service is an essential part of responsible citizenship. In 1947, JLD President Betty Chambers wrote, “The Junior League volunteer does not measure her service in hours. As the city [of Dallas] has grown, so the League has grown in size and in the scope of its work, but it has remained a group of young women working together intelligently, efficiently and harmoniously. With such a past, our future must surely be a splendid one.” More than 60 years later, her words still ring true. Charlie Wilson Verizon Theatre ✯

Grammy-nominated recording artist and R&B icon Charlie Wilson will take the stage at the Verizon Theatre on Friday, February 15, with special guests Keith Sweat and Alex Boyd. Wilson just released his new, highlyanticipated album, Love, Charlie, on January 29, 2013. The selection of songs on Love, Charlie cover the various aspects of love that people experience - from the joy of discovering it on “I Think I’m In Love,” to one’s heart speaking to another’s on the lead single, “My Love is All I Have.” For Wilson, the love of self and faith in God is represented on “If I Believe,” his most poignant song on the album. “The first track on ‘Love, Charlie’ sets the tone for this project,” Wilson said. “As everyone knows I have not only survived some of life’s challenges, I have been triumphant and ‘If I Believe’ is my testimony which I hope will inspire others.” Wilson, whose career began with his brothers as the incomparable and funky GAP Band, has been enjoying an extraordinary solo career which includes two Grammy nominations for each of his last two albums, Uncle Charlie and Just Charlie. The latter release spawned the chart-topping hit “You Are” which claimed the #1 spot Billboard’s Urban Adult Contemporary chart for 13 consecutive weeks. In addition to his success as a solo artist, Wilson has collaborated with numerous chart-topping artists and producers including Snoop Dogg, R. Kelly, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, Fantasia, T. Pain, Justin Timberlake and his recent performance on the 2012 Soul Train Awards with 2 Chainz. “I started late in the game as a solo act,” Wilson says. “I came out of the toilet to have a solo career that no one thought would ever happen. Now I’m on the other side of the finish line … and still have something to sing about. I’m blessed to be standing strong from back in the day.” Genre: R&B Date: February 15 Details: www.TicketMaster.com ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

Ken Price. Photo: Courtesy Matthew Marks Gallery

A Retrospective Works Of Ken Price Sculptor Ken Price was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. In the 1950’s, he developed a love for Mexican pottery and during surfing trips with his friends to Tijuana, he would always stop at the small curio shops to look at the incredible pottery works of the local artists. These expeditions heavily influenced the artist’s work while was attending the University of Southern California as they all held the characteristics of the folk pottery tradition. After finishing his degree at USC, he studied as a graduate student at the Otis Art Institute where ceramic artist, Peter Voulkos taught. Price has stated many times that his studies under Voulkos were the single strongest artistic influence in his life. So strong in fact that the artist left in 1958 to attend Alfred University to try shake the influence of Voulkos. He returned to Los Angeles in the late 50’s to a city which had no supportive art scene. Many of the contemporary artists there merely “existed” on meager sales that were well-below their worth for about ten years. In the 60’s the art scene began to thrive. In the early 80’s, Price moved to the east coast and began perfecting the sculptural forms which have given him wide acclaim. He is best known for his abstract shapes which are constructed from fired clay. Rather than glazing them, the artist paints them with intricate layers of bright acrylic paint and then sanded down to reveal the colors which lie beneath. This retrospective of his work was planned with Price prior to his death February of 2012. Museum: Nasher Sculpture Center Exhibition: Opens February 9 Details: www.NasherSculptureCenter.org

John Thomson ✯

John Thomson was a Scottish photographer who was born two years prior to the invention of the daguerreotype and thus, the invention of photography. In the early days of photography, Thomson traveled to Asia in 1862 and set up a professional studio where he made negatives on glass plates that were then coated with emulsion before they were exposed. Through this method he was able to capture a vast array of images that ranged from people to landscapes, architecture and domestic street scenes. Through the unique process of photography and his innate ability to portray culture, he was able to reveal the true character of China’s immense empire. His work in China served to establish him as a professional pioneer in the field of photojournalism, but after he returned to England in 1872, he took on a much different role as an educator. He began holding a series of public illustrated lectures and wrote in publications to inform people about the beauty, traditions and customs of China. His publications started initially in monthly magazines and grew into a series of large, elaborately illustrated photographic books. He also wrote extensively about the art of photography and contributed many articles to photographic journals. In 1920, he wrote to a British pharmacist, philanthropist and collector by the name of Henry Wellcome. He made an offer to sell his glass negatives to Wellcome but Thompson unfortunately died of a heart attack in 1921, before the transaction could take place. Wellcome was later able to purchase the negatives from Thomson’s heirs. All of the images shown in this exhibition are from the Wellcome Library’s collection in London. This is the first exhibition dedicated solely to Thomson’s photographs of China. Page 26, Galleries

Michael Kenna is a British photographer who is best known for his series of black and white landscapes. In the early 1980s, Kenna moved to San Francisco and worked as Ruth Bernhard’s printer. Kenna’s photography often focuses on unusual landscape compositions or elements that he photographs at dawn or at night with extremely long exposure times of nearly ten hours. The effect casts an ethereal light across the landscape and because he uses such long exposures, the landscape presents itself as something that cannot be seen with the naked eye. In doing so, he is able to turn his camera, a device that is typically a recorder of reality, into a vehicle for the creation of abstract art. His imagery intends to transport the viewer into his iconic and placid landscapes that invite the viewer to linger in solitude. Many themes reoccur in his

work, such as well-known architectural forms like the Golden Gate Bridge or the Shanghai skyline, serene seascapes like the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro and interesting landscapes like the Tuileries Gardens in France. There is never human presence in any of his photographs. Since 1986, the artists has primarily used Hasselblad medium format and Holga Cameras which produce square rather than rectangular photographs This exhibition will feature photographs the artist has taken across the globe, including: China, South Korea, Thailand, Italy, Venice, Paris, New York,

An Ethereal Light San Francisco and Brazil. His photos of Asia, particularly his 2001 photos of Japan, are heavily lauded by critics. This is the time that Kenna found that the Asian landscape best matched his own aesthetics. Since then his photographic journeys included repeated travels to Japan, as well as China, Korea and other Eastern countries. This exhibition will be Michael Kenna’s third solo show at PDNB Gallery.

Casey Williams ✯

In his newest body of work, photographer Casey Williams presents photographs from repeated visits he has made to various locales over the years. These pilgrimages are not just routine visits, but are described more as “meditative field trips.” Upon first glance, it appears that the artist is wishing to pull out and highlight one small aspect of a giant space, but when one reflects more deeply on the subject matter, one gains a sense of the greater serenity and poetry within the work. Many of the images seem repetitive but are, in reality, much like a “find-the-difference” puzzle. The viewer notices a ripple in the water or one that isn’t present in the other or change in the way one scene is lit. For those unfamiliar with Williams’ past work, they will begin to discover the method or rather, a pattern to Williams’ distinctive image-making practices as one that reveals the most minute, almost imperceptible change of light or circumstance and gives to it a sense of dominance. This collection of new works, initially numbering in the hundreds, have been edited and organized into bound, one-of-akind books which the artist views as workbooks that illustrate the process of his method to art creation. Casey Williams has exhibited in numerous museums, including: Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont; Diverseworks in Houston; El Paso Museum of Art; Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, California; New Orleans Museum of Art; Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston; The Gallery at the University of Texas at Arlington; Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin; The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Williams’ work has also been widely collected by many top art institutions. Catch Me If You

Theater: Music Hall at Fair Park Show: Opens February 12 Details: www.DallasSummerMusicals.org

The Broadway Musical Hit! This is a new Broadway musical about the true story of Frank Abagnale, Jr. Frank was a typical teenager with a not-sotypical plan. He ran away from home in search of the glamorous life, getting by on nothing more than his boyish charm, inventive imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks. Frank successfully posed as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer.

Page 30, Theater

He even wound up winning the girl of his dreams until he was caught. The title, “Catch Me If You Can” was used for Abagnale’s ghostwritten autobiography, a feature film and for the Broadway musical. At the age of 16, Frank ran away from home during his parent’s divorce hearing. He used his own overdrawn bank

account for a brief time and then began opening accounts at other banks under a series of assumed identities. He would print out copies of checks that looked very realistic, and then deposit them while persuading banks to give him a cash advance on the basis of his current holdings. In this romantic comedy, Léonide, the princess of Sparta has disguised herself as a man that she has named Phocion so that she may pass undetected into the house of her enemy, Hermocrates. She has done so because she is in love with a man who also dwells in this house named Agis. To further complicate matters, she has learned that her father, in an act of revenge, has usurped the Spartan throne from Cléomènes and that her love, Agis is the true heir. She wishes to gain his love and restore him to power. When the gardner, Dimas becomes suspicious of the household’s new visitor, he calls upon Hermocrate’s sister, Léontine to expel Phocion from the premises but Phocion pretends to fall in love with Léontine and seduces her into supporting “him.” Meanwhile, Phocion meets Hermocrates who at once sees through the disguise and threatens to expose Léonide as Phocion. When she explains herself, he too falls in love with the beautiful princess. All the while, the princess has only been able to forge a strong friendship with Agis, while Hermocrates and Léontine bide for her time and affections. Will Léonide be able to win the love she truly wants and restore him to power while juggling an additional two admirers; one of which is a man and the other a woman? This threeact French play by Pierre de Marivaux was first performed in Paris on March 12, 1732. It opened to poor reviews by critics who felt that the subject matter was too controversial for the times. In 1912, however, it enjoyed a popular revival and was again reborn in 1956, thus spurring a Broadway musical adaptation and in 2001, a film adaptation starring Mira Sorvino and Ben Kingsley. Plaza Suite Neil Simon ✯

This three-act play by Neil Simon takes place in Suite 719 of the famous Plaza Hotel in New York. Each act focuses on a different couple. The first act introduces a married couple named Sam and Karen Nash, who are revisiting their honeymoon suite in an effort to revitalize their marriage. Plans go awry and the two wind up in a terrible argument whilst allegations of an affair are thrown about. Act two focuses on a suburban housewife named Muriel and her old flame, Jesse who is now a philandering movie producer. Muriel is visiting Jesse to simply chat and catch up, but Jesse has other plans in mind and wishes to seduce her. In the third act, we meet a second married couple; Roy and Norma Hubley. They are rallying around their daughter Mimsey, who, in a fit of nervousness on her wedding day has locked herself in the suite’s bathroom and is refusing to come out. Meanwhile the guests are gathering downstairs at the hotel and her parents, becoming increasingly frantic, are working to coax Mimsey out of the bathroom to face her wedding. The play was originally written with four acts but the fourth was cut during preproduction. It opened on Broadway on Valentine’s Day in 1968 at the Plymouth Theatre and ran for almost 2,000 performances. The original cast featured George C. Scott and Maureen Stapleton who appeared in all three acts. Simon also adapted the play for a 1971 film starring Walter Matthau, but Simon disliked having Matthau play the lead in all acts. In 1987, Carol Burnett starred in a television movie adaptation in which she played all three female roles. Carol Burnett also served as the executive producer. Warm Bodies

Nicholas Hoult / Teresa Palmer ✯

An unlikely romance between a beautiful human teen and a sensitive undead slacker sets off a chain of events with the power to transform the world in Warm Bodies, the hilarious and heartwarming zombie action rom-com based on the popular novel by Isaac Marion. It’s a familiar scenario—a mysterious virus has devastated civilization, turning its victims into flesh-eating monsters without memories of their past lives. What is left of humanity is holed up in heavily fortified bunkers where they live in fear of their former loved ones. But all that changes when a ravenous zombie hunting party crosses paths with a human reconnaissance crew scavenging supplies. R (played by Nicholas Hoult), a soulful zombie, is so captivated by the lovely and living Julie (played by Teresa Palmer) that, instead of eating her brains, he saves her from being consumed by his companions. Taking her back to the zombie-ridden airport he calls home, R hides Julie in an abandoned 747 filled with treasures he has collected during his hunting expeditions—vinyl records, snow globes, musical instruments and other lost relics of a saner time. Over the next few days in their surprisingly cozy hideaway, the feisty Julie awakens long-forgotten feelings in R, while she begins to realize there is more to him than a vacant stare and a slow-motion shuffle. Confused by her feelings, Julie returns to her walled-off city where her father, a ruthless zombie hunter, leads a well-armed security force. Meanwhile, the lovelorn R has begun to change in ways he never thought possible and believes his connection with Julie could be the salvation of the human race. But when he shows up at her doorstep, it sparks an all-out war between the living and the undead that threatens to derail the couple’s chance of ever having a future together. Identity thief

Jason Bateman / Melissa McCarthy ✯

Horrible Bosses’ Jason Bateman and Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy lead the cast of Identity Thief, an allstar comedy in which a regular guy is forced to extreme measures to clear his name. After finding out that there is little authorities can do without the person responsible for the theft present, he decides to take matters into his own hands and travel across the country to track down the perpetrator. With everything to lose after his identity is stolen, he’ll find out how crazed you can get trying to settle a bad credit score. Unlimited funds have allowed Diana (played by McCarthy) to live it up on the outskirts of Miami, where the queen of retail buys whatever strikes her fancy. There’s only one glitch: The ID she’s using to finance these sprees reads “Sandy Bigelow Patterson”… and it belongs to an accounts rep (played by Bateman) who lives halfway across the United States. With only one week to hunt down the con artist before his world implodes, the real Sandy Bigelow Patterson heads south to confront the woman with an all-access pass to his life. And as he attempts to bribe, coax and wrangle her the 2,000 miles back to Denver, he soon finds out that he isn’t the only one looking for the “Sandy.” One easy target will discover just how tough it is to get your name back. Directed by Horrible Bosses’ Seth Gordon, Identity Thief is produced by Scott Stuber (Ted), Bateman and Pam Abdy (upcoming action drama 47 Ronin). The comedy also stars Jon Favreau (Iron Man 3), Amanda Peet, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Genesis Rodriguez, Morris Chestnut, John Cho, Clark Duke, Robert Patrick, Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) and Ben Falcone - who is McCarthy’s husband offscreen. Al Pacino / Christopher Walken ✯

Stand Up Guys stars Academy Award® winners Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin in a tough but touching action comedy as retired gangsters who reunite for one epic last night. Val (played by Al Pacino) is released from prison after serving twenty-eight years for refusing to give up one of his close criminal associates. His best friend Doc (played by Christopher Walken) is there to pick him up, and the two soon reteam with another old pal, Hirsch (played by Alan Arkin). Their bond is as strong as ever, and the three reflect on freedom lost and gained, loyalties ebbed and flowed, and days of glory gone by. And despite their age, their capacity for mayhem is still very much alive and well - bullets fly as they make a hilariously valiant effort to compensate for the decades of crime, drugs and sex they’ve missed. But one of the friends is keeping a dangerous secret - he’s been put in an impossible quandary by a former mob boss, and his time to find an acceptable alternative is running out. As the sun rises on the guys’ legendary reunion, their position becomes more and more desperate and they finally confront their past once and for all. Director Fisher Stevens (Just a Kiss, Early Edition) was enamored with the story for several reasons, one of which was its take on life-long friends. “I really related to the story’s take on friendships,” the director says. “I love the relationships between these men and the twist at the end, and I also thought it was really funny and touching and very real. That was our goal, to keep it very real.” Stand Up Guys is a simple but great story about real people who are struggling to get by but share a deep friendship. “It’s funny and touching and the acting is, I think, beautiful,” Stevens says. “And it looks beautiful, too. We made something that I would really want to see.” Director: Fisher Stevens Rated: R Opens: February 1 ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

Do you want to be 18 again?

It is not just about better sex! Having a child usually is one of the most magical and fulfilling experiences of a woman’s life. Unfortunately, the physical toll that pregnancy and childbirth have on a woman’s body can be devastating. During childbirth, as the baby passes through the birth canal, the muscles, fascia, and ligaments surrounding her vagina can separate and become damaged or weakened resulting in a condition known as vaginal relaxation. Symptoms of vaginal relaxation include Urinary Stress Incontinence (USI) loss of functional control, and decreased sexual gratification for both the woman and her partner. Many women are dissatisfied with the aesthetic appearance of their genitalia. Irregular genital structures can be the result of hereditary characteristics, childbirth, trauma, and aging. Dr. Huertas is one of the few gynecologists, in the United States, who have been trained to perform a cosmetic enhancing procedure known as Designer Laser Vaginoplasty. Dr. Huertas has expertise with cosmetic laser procedures that repair, enhance and beautify the female genitalia. “I believe that sexual well-being is important for both women and men to lead happy and healthy productive lives.” States Dr. Huertas. “In addition to physical pleasure, sex strengthens emotional bonds between partners, and adds excitement to life. As a gynecologist, I often hear complaints from my patients that once the vaginal muscles have remained relaxed throughout and after their pregnancy, sex was just not the same. LVR techniques result in gentle precision cutting with controlled accuracy that results in relatively bloodless surgery. LVR pioneered techniques result in rapid healing and resumption of daily activities in a short period of time. The best candidate for this vaginal surgery is a physically healthy woman with realistic goals. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation has been well received in magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Bazaar, ELLE, Marie Claire, and Vogue. Among the unique services offered at CosmeticGyn Center are Hymen Restoration, Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation for enhanced sexual gratification; laser labial reduction and augmentation to enhance and beautify the external female genitalia; and ultrasonic lipo-sculpturing of the vulvar structures. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation (LVR) and Designer Laser Vaginoplasty (DLV) are frequently combined at the same time. The most frequently combined procedures are Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation and Laser Reduction Labiaplasty of the labia minora. Patients who suffer from stress urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine with laughing, coughing, sneezing, exercising etc.) can also have this condition treated at the same time as the LVR procedure.

Lake DAllas Mardi Gras Annual Fat Tuesday Celebration ✯

Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday” and it refers to the rather raucous tradition of celebrating and eating fattening delights the night before Ash Wednesday, when folks will be giving up such treats during the Lenten season. Lake Dallas holds an annual Fat Tuesday celebration and this year, Main Street will be set for fun on February 12, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Nearly 1500 people are expected to attend this ‘Big Easy’ parade. The free, familyfriendly event will roll down the streets of Lake Dallas at 5:30 p.m. Lake Dallas City Hall will transform its grounds into a family-friendly town party to, as the French would say, “Laissez les bon temps rouler” which means “Let the good times roll!” In addition to the parade, other features include a Mardi Gras costume contest, a youth Mardi Gras mask competition and a traditional New Orlean’s Cajun-Style crawfish dinner that will be served. Parade goers can also enjoy vendor market for unique shopping opportunities and children-themed activities will be planned to get kids involved in the Mardi Gras Carnival. The Nawlin’s Gumbo Kings will be the headlining evening entertainment with their New Orleans style of jazz that’s already a local favorite. Lake Dallas is, in fact, the birth place of the Nawlin’s Gumbo Kings and the city anxiously awaits this band’s annual return home. Lake Dallas’s own Steve Howard of the Nawlin’s Gumbo Kings describes their music as “a joyous return to his musical roots.” Howard is a Lake Dallas High School alumni and world-renowned trumpeter who moved to Bourbon Street to work with famous New Orleans Jazz and R&B legend Allen Toussaint.
