The benefit for Leukemia and Lymphoma will be chaired by Angela Choquette, Maggie Kipp and Paige Slates. Once again, Yvonne Crum will chair the event she created for Suicide Prevention- Fresh Faces of Fashion- at Stanley Korshak on March 22. Everyone can show their support for the Ronald McDonald House by buying tickets to the Black Tie gala at Brook Hollow. In May, the A-Listers will dress in formal attire for the Celebrity Waiter Gala at the Ritz-Carlton on the 4th. This is a benefit for Family Compass which helps prevent child abuse. Art Lovers and loyal patrons always look forward to the Black Tie TACA (The Arts Community Alliance) Custom Auction Gala in September at the Rosewood Mansion. This year, the date is September 20th. October brings us the best costume party in Texas with The Bone Bash, raising money for Arthritis (Date TBA). Also Treasure Street for Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, held in an enormous tent, will be October 10th. Chairs will be Stacy and Dan Branch. So 2013 promises to be a banner year for the Fete’ Set and those working to help North Texas non-profits achieve their goals in a difficult economy. Lass Blumen Sprechen Hans J. Schnitzler ✯
The title of this exhibition, “Let Flowers Speak”, is- in the artist’s native tonguea reference to the way that nature photographer, Hans J. Schnitzler believes his camera allows him to capture living entities in extraordinary ways and that nature itself often serves at the best subject for photography. The artist, who has had a long fascination with the art of photography and believes that his camera is his best friend, presents a collection of color photographs of nature and flowers that he has produced through the years as he traveled across Eastern and Western Europe and across the United States. He uses his camera lens to tell the stories of the various flowers he has captured on film, thus allowing the flowers to “speak.” In his position as a research photographer at the Dallas Arboretum, Schnitzler enjoys a seemingless endless array of subjects and boundless inspiration for his artistic natural photographs, many of which are featured in this exhibition. Hans J. Schintzler is an award-winning artist who moved to the United States from Germany in the 1960s. Co- Re-Creating Spaces
Carolyn Sortor & Michael A. Morris ✯
This exhibition, curated by Carolyn Sortor & Michael A. Morris, was created to examine the way in which artists question and alter the reality of items or even entire spaces, and in doing so, they not only create, but re-create a work or area. By examining this mutable present or permeable reality, the exhibition serves to illustrate that what is commonly perceived as “now” can serve as both art medium as well as art subject or object. In essence, that which changes in the perception may also simultaneously change in the reality. That is, if there is actually a “reality” to perceive. This exhibition is the result of an enormous amount of collaboration. The artists who will be featured in the exhibition include: Art activist, Morehshin Allahyari; Inter-media artist, Nadav Assor; social critic Amy Balkin, digital artist Aram Bartholl, cross disciplinary artist Zanny Begg, public installation artist Oliver Ressler, avant-garde artist Linda Bilda, performance artist Irina Botea, filmmaker Martha Colburn, artist and curator Danette Dufilho, Director of the Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas Anne Lawrence, Meadows art instructor Bernie Diaz, video installation artist Cao Fei, multi-disciplinary conceptual artist Yevgeniy Fiks, art writer Olga Kopenkina, photographic installation artist Alexandra Lerman; an assortment of contributing artists from the Institute for Wishful Thinking; Art lecturer Greg Metz; sketch composition artist Kristin Cochran; installation artist Cassandra Emswiler; Visual and performance artist, Martha Rosler; revolutionary artist, Dread Scott; Creative activist, Yes Lab/Steve Lambert; and Reading Room founder, Karen Weiner. The Color of My Memory Du Chau ✯
The artist Du Chau was born in Vietnam and came to the United States in 1981 to pursue a career in medical pathology and is currently serving as a Pathology Technical Coordinator at the Methodist Hospital of Dallas. He discovered his love of art by taking classes at Brookhaven College. Art moved him so much that he actually took a sabbatical from medicine to get his Fine Arts degree and then a Master in Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2003. His latest exhibition presents a strong narrative composed of artwork focusing on peace, war and violence. He uses a series of silkscreen prints that combine historical images of the past and blends them together with the present. Many of them crossreference China, Vietnam as well as the United States. He does this in an effort to blend his memories with his present works. Du Chau’s prints comprise multiple layers of color. The title of the exhibition comes from Du Chau’s description of his prints. When discussing them, Chau states, “They are the color of my memory. I want the work to be saturated with color until we can no longer breath. Just like the war, we can breath again once it’s over.” The artist strongly feels that by paying attention to the way that history repeats itself and even nature itself uses repetition, we can learn how to relate ourselves and our work to that reality. As a result, the artist frequently uses repetitive shapes and patterns to create his exhibitions. Du Chau’s works can be found in the collections of the Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art, the Allen Steinheim Museum, the Dallas County Community College District Service Center and also in the collections at Brookhaven College. The artists in this show will use painting as a framework by which public information such as history, media and even figures of speech can be used and misused as artistic content. Frontline Report Jansen ✯
In Jansen’s solo exhibition, the artist will focus upon two-dimensional large and small urban-style works he created between 2008 and 2012. With a gestural quality, Jansen’s paintings bring the urban landscape to life and he creates a critical dialog with his depictions of the cruelty and often fleeting nature of urban street life. The artist’s use of oil enamel paint lends his paintings a rich quality which entices the viewer to enter the urban landscape and experience the realism of life as it happens there. The artist was born in Manhattan, New York, but he was raised in Germany. In 1988, he joined the United States Armed Forces and did a combat tour in the first Gulf War. In 1991, he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and was sent to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC for treatment which utilized art therapy. He has since devoted himself fully to redefining the urban landscape through his work. In doing so, the artist has become part of a generation of artists who explore urban expressionism by using urban landscapes and the connection between street art and contemporary art disciplines. His work can be found amongst the collections of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), The New Britain Museum of American Art, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art PERMM, and The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art. His most recent commission from the ABSOLUT VODKA company, has brought him increasing global attention. With this commission his name joins the ranks of other artists who have painted for the company including: Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring. Gallery Director/ Owner Ree Willaford invited Jansen to show in November at the Gallery, making it his first solo show in Texas. In search of such subjects closer to home, she worked over a ten year period to assemble an exhibition with the Dallas Historical Society and the Mexican Institute for International Cooperation that included more than 200 muralsized photographs. That exhibition was entitled “Sacred Space: Man and the Divine in Mexico, Guatemala and Southwestern United States.” Through her photography, she seeks to highlight the vibrant culture of these areas as it is so often characterized by the old colonial churches and missions that can be found in the small towns and quiet villages that speckle the country. With this current exhibition, the artist will focus on the multi-hued, tiled and painted church fronts from the central Mexican regions of Puebla and Queretaro. This area was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century to secure a trade route between Mexico City and the Port of Veracruz. Starting in the mid-1600s, this region had embraced the newly imported baroque forms of art and architecture from throughout Spain and Europe, but with the color and Mexican flourishes as evidenced by the ornate stucco and painted tiles. The photographs of Carolyn Brown seek to capture the splendor of the glittering tiled churches of Puebla and its surroundings as well as the painted folkloric facades that can be found in the smaller villages throughout the region. The second set of photographs were taken in Queretaro, in the NorthCentral region of Mexico. They focus upon the sculpted polychrome facades of five unique missions that are nestled in the remote subtropical valleys of the Sierra Gorda de Queretaro. The Velveteen Rabbit
Award-Winning Children’s Tale ✯
Adapted from Margery William’s award-winning children’s book of the same name, The Velveteen Rabbit chronicles the story of a toy rabbit who wants desperately to become real. A stuffed rabbit which was given to a young boy at Christmas is shunned and snubbed by many of the boy’s more intricate and expensive toys. The rabbit wants nothing more than to become “real” and he learns from a conversation with the Skin Horse, that a toy can only become real if it is truly loved by a child for a very long time. After Christmas, the rabbit gets forgotten in favor of the mechanical toys until one day when the young boy’s china dog goes missing and “Nana,” the ruler of the nursery selects the rabbit to serve as a replacement for the china dog. The boy falls asleep with the rabbit in his arms and soon he begins to take the rabbit everywhere he goes. One day he gets left in the garden and the young boy won’t sleep until he has his trusty rabbit back in his arms. Nana, who is very frustrated after having searched fervently finds the rabbit and cleans the dirt off of him before giving him back to the boy, saying “It’s only a toy.” Much to the delight of the rabbit, the boy declares, “How can you say that. He isn’t a toy, He is real!” The rabbit is so excited he can hardly sleep that night knowing that just as the Skin Horse said, the nursery magic has transformed the velveteen rabbit into “Real.” Is isn’t until he encounters some other rabbits who hop and jump near the house that he doesn’t have hind legs or a wiggly nose. Will he ever become a real rabbit? Theater: Winspear Opera House Performance: January 27 Details: www.ATTpac.org ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

Musical Comedy
I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change ✯
This musical comedy by Joe DiPietro and Jimmy Roberts is the secondlongest running Off Broadway musical revue. In 1997, it was nominated for the Outer Critics Circle Award as an Outstanding Off-Broadway musical. It has been translated into at least 14 different languages and has played internationally in more than 250 cities since it first opened at the Westside Theatre in New York City on August 1, 1996. The production closed after more than 5,000 performances in 2008. Despite the vast array of characters, the show is typically done with a very small cast, for example, the original Off-Broadway production only uses a cast of four people. The show is presented in a series of vignettes, all connected by the central theme of love and relationships in Manhattan. Act one deals with the hilarious ins and outs of meeting, dating and then mating to marriage. Act two details all of the surprises that are hidden within marriages from dealing with difficult in-laws to colicky babies, family car trips, shuffling off to soccer practice, home ownership, divorce and even pick-up lines for the geriatric. The vignettes could operate independently from one another. For example, one scene focuses on women bemoaning the lack of a viable single dating pool, while another focuses on the ugly array of bridesmaid dresses. The play’s tagline is: “Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit.” In addition to having a long run time and critical acclaim, it is also known as the most proposal-friendly show. The official website for the show states that 57 times, a young man has taken the stage to make a surprise proposal and in every case, the girl said “yes”! King Lear
William Shakespeare ✯
Written by William Shakespeare between 1603 and 1606, King Lear is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest tragedies. Aging King Lear of Britain decides to divide his kingdom among his three children; Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. Before granting a portion of his kingdom, however, he puts his daughters to the test; asking for professions of their love to him. Goneril and Regan flatter their father with their declarations of love to him. Cordelia is his youngest and also his favorite, but she remains quiet for the most part, saying that she has no basis of comparison and no words to express how much she loves her father. Incensed by her unwillingness to show affection, King Lear disowns Cordelia and banishes her from the kingdom. King Lear quickly learns that he has made a terrible mistake as the truth is revealed that Goneril and Regan never truly loved him. Together they begin to undermine his authority and the realization of their betrayal forces him slowly into insanity. Meanwhile, under intense struggles of power, jealousy and false pretenses, the ruling family wages war and murder against one another and eventually leaves the kingdom to be ruled under a great cloud of sorrow and regret by a nobleman named Kent and Edgar, the son of Gloucester. Because of the intensely prevailing themes of human cruelty and meaningless disasters, many believe that King Lear was a tragedy that was written to ask the question, “Can there be any possibility of justice in the world, or is the nature of the world merely indifferent or even hostile to humankind?” Theater: Charles and Dee Wyly Theater Performance: Opens January 18 Details: www.DallasTheaterCenter.org

a dark truth
Andy Garcia / Eva Longoria ✯
Andy Garcia, Kim Coates, Deborah Kara Unger, Eva Longoria and Forest Whitaker star in A Dark Truth, written and directed by Damian Lee. Garcia plays a former CIA operative turned political talk show host, who is hired by a corporate whistle blower to expose her company’s cover-up of a massacre in a South American village. When he arrives, he is plunged into a violent and chaotic situation, with the military cracking down on a group of protesters led by a pair of activists (played by Eva Longoria and Forest Whitaker). The ever-increasing depletion of earth’s natural resource of water serves as the backdrop for this tense environmental thriller. In a story filled with a core mythical ethos of family, power and corruption, the provocatively titled thriller A Dark Truth focuses on the exposure of evil corporate deeds, greed and misconduct in the third world being brought to light. The film draws attention to man’s inhumanity and unconscious actions against the environment and questions if there is a moral and ethical obligation when talking about boundaries, borders and human interaction. With the ever-increasing depletion of earth’s natural resource of water serving as the backdrop, a multi-national corporation disregards basic human needs that result in widespread illness and a people’s uprising. The distress causes unlikely allies to conspire and seek redemption for past deeds. Writer/director Damian Lee was researching a project dealing with water problems and concerns on a global basis when he discovered the real-life South American water wars which happened when a major multinational corporation bought up the water rights in a couple of countries. “I looked at this as there being a terrific water story dealing with the abuse of power, selling out your fellow countrymen and corporate greed,” said Lee. Gangster Squad
Ryan Gosling / Sean Penn ✯
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop… except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara and Jerry Wooters, who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. Under the direction of Ruben Fleischer, Gangster Squad is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time. The film stars Oscar nominees Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as the LAPD’s Sgt. John O’Mara and Jerry Wooters, and Academy Award-winner Sean Penn as real-life mobster Mickey Cohen. The film also stars Oscar nominee Nick Nolte as LAPD Chief “Whiskey Bill” Parker, and Emma Stone as Grace Faraday, Cohen’s moll and the object of Wooters’ attention. The movie also stars Anthony Mackie as Coleman Harris, a switchblade-wielding cop who proudly patrols one of the most crime-ridden areas of the city; Giovanni Ribisi as the force’s Conwell Keeler, an electronics expert who takes as much pleasure in fixing his son’s bike as he does tinkering with experimental, military-grade equipment; Robert Patrick as Officer Max Kennard, a deadly cop who patrols the Olvera Street beat; Michael Peña as Kennard’s overeager sidekick, Navidad Ramirez; and Mireille Enos as O’Mara’s wife, Connie. Arnold Schwarzeneggar / Johnny Knoxville ✯
Action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his much-anticipated return to the big screen in Korean director Kim Jee-Woon’s hard-hitting U.S. directorial debut, The Last Stand. After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (played by Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (played by Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (played by Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown. The Last Stand is directed by Kim Jee-Woon (I Saw The Devil, A Tale of Two Sisters) and written by Andrew Knauer (Ghost Team One).
