Crystal Charity Ball 60th Annual EVENT ✯

It is truly the most luxurious galas of them all, but more importantly it raises awesome amounts of funding for local charities. Aileen Pratt, Chairman, has announced that the theme of this year’s ball will be Le Grand Bal Parisien at the Hilton Anatole Hotel on Saturday, December 1st. The announcement was made at Kelly and Norman Green’s Strait Lane “chateau” with members of The Crystal Charity Ball Committee and spouses in attendance. Ball designer Tom Addis and Ball Décor Chairman Ashley Tripplehorn Hunt unveiled the ball logo amidst champagne toasts in the Green’s gorgeous main salon. At the Theme Announcement party co-chairmen Delilah Boyd and Claire Emanuelson oversaw every detail of the evening and worked closely with Cassandra Fine Catering which generously donated the Frenchinspired menu. In 2012, the 100 active members of The Crystal Charity Ball Committee committed to raise $4,420,489. These funds will support commendable local organizations and give children hope for a healthier more productive future. The generous spirit of Underwriters, Children’s Book participants, Silent Auction and Special Gift donors, and Contribution Ticket patrons will help turn promises into reality for children served by The Crystal Charity Ball. The 2012 Crystal Charity Ball Committee has selected seven beneficiaries with a collective need of $4,420,489. Since 1952, The Crystal Charity Ball has been to aid, support and make contributions to children’s charities in Dallas County. As a nonprofit organization, independent of any national affiliation, members have raised more than $105 million for more than 140 worthy beneficiaries over the past 60 years. A Fundraiser for Shared Housing ✯

This Dallas countywide program matches individuals who have more housing than they need with people and families in need of housing. Typically the person with the home is female, head of household who has outlived spouse, family, friends and their informal support network. They are house rich and money poor; struggling to pay utilities, maintenance of the home and taxes. They seek a roommate who can contribute minimally to the finances and substantially to their life by offering companionship, assistance with house chores and a sense of security. The person or families who seek housing come from all walks of life. They are students, second career seekers, recently divorced persons, low-income families, unemployed persons, homeless individuals/families, women with their children fleeing domestic violence situations, and single women fleeing abusive partners. These are the services provided by the staff: telephone counseling; a personal interview to discuss your housing needs, preferences, concerns and expectations; careful screening; criminal background and reference check; home visits; assistance with the housematch trial period and agreement; ongoing assistance to assure the success of your match; re-matching if initial match dissolves; information and referral to other services when appropriate. Homesharing promotes living arrangements in which people share a residence based on common needs, interests and preferences. Each arrangement is custom made; therefore, services rendered and costs involved will vary. The goal is that each arrangement contributes not only to the individuals and families involved, but also to the community by preserving homes and promoting solutions. The program cuts across cultural and multi-generations issues. Rober Earl Keen House of Blues ✯

Considered a pioneer in the world of Americana music, Robert Earl Keen began performing in 1981 and has toured extensively throughout most of his career creating a loyal and extensive fan base. His music is described by NPR as “a blend of acoustic folk balladry and raucous barroom country.” Ready For Confetti, his 16th studio album, was produced by Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks, Flatlanders), who also produced The Rose Hotel. The record is a departure for Keen with its shorter song lengths, atypical song themes and Keen’s method of songwriting. “I always said that I never write on the road,” says Keen, who wrote nine of the album’s songs and co-wrote another with Dean Dillon. “I threw certain formulas totally out the window because I just don’t always believe in convention as the best way to serve your purpose as far as singing songs that people enjoy however, on this one I stuck to more concise ideas, more universal themes and more singable melodies. Consequently, it has somewhat more of a conventional sound than any of my records.” This is the second Keen studio album produced by Lloyd Maines, who created the right attitude and spirit for each song while remaining true to Keen’s artistic vision. “I can honestly say I have never worked with a finer human being who has as much musical skill as well as people skill,” Keen says. “He is the one who sets the tone.” Maines was also the one who suggested that Keen cover the 1914 song “Soul of a Man,” which Keen occasionally performed acoustically and without microphones to end his shows. “It never fails. It is the favorite part of the whole show for everybody no matter how well we played,” he says. “I love the message: if you lead a good life, your spirit never dies.” Genre: Texas Country Date: December 28 Details: www.HOB.com

Trans-Siberian Orchestra America Airlines Center ✯

Founded by producer, composer, and lyricist Paul O’Neill in 1993, Trans-Siberian Orchestra has sold more than 9 million concert tickets and 8 million albums. The band’s musical style consists of classical, orchestral, symphonic, and progressive elements along with hard rock and heavy metal. TSO has released a series of rock operas: Christmas Eve and Other Stories, The Christmas Attic, Beethoven’s Last Night, The Lost Christmas Eve and their two-disc Night Castle. With Trans-Siberian Orchestra, O’Neill saw that he could take his idea of progressive rock to a whole different level. He would add a full orchestra to a rock band. Instead of just one singer, O’Neill would recruit different singers to bring to life whatever characters he could create. He would also take the rock opera a step further, adapting the cohesive story telling of Broadway plays to create compelling and emotionally powerful narratives to match the epic scope of the music. “The original concept was to do six rock operas, a trilogy of rock operas about Christmas, and possibly one or two regular albums” O’Neill said. While it was not originally the plan, O’Neill tackled the Christmas albums first. Those CDs, known as the “Christmas Trilogy,” have become cemented into the holiday tradition for millions of fans throughout the years. Three more such projects are in production - Romanov: When Kings Must Whisper, Gutter Ballet and Letters From The Labrynth. O’Neill said one of those three CDs will be released in 2013. His vision for Rock Theater boils down to a basic concept - take the spectacular modern visual production of a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert, as well as the fully developed stories that are told in the lyrics and poetry of the group’s rock opera-styled CDs to the stage, and bring theater into the 21st century. Did you know that 1930s toy company Fisher Price made their early toys with heavy steel parts and ponderosa pine, which resisted splintering and held up well to heavy use and Mrs. Price, an artist and illustrator designed wooden push-pull toys for the company based on characters from her children’s books? Apollo 7

Frontiers of Flight Museum ✯

The first manned flight of the Apollo Program was accomplished by Walter Cunningham, Walter Schirra, and Donn Eisele in this spacecraft from October 11 to 22, 1968, which is on loan from The National Air & Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Apollo 1, which was originally named Apollo Saturn-204 was initially scheduled to be the first manned mission of this manned lunar landing program and had a target launch date of February 21, 1967, but a cabin fire erupted during a launch pad test on January 27, which killed all three crew members; Command Pilot Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Senior Pilot Edward H. White and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee. The fire also destroyed the Command Module. In tribute to those who died, the name Apollo 1, which had been chosen by the crew, was retired by NASA. The manned phase of the project was delayed for 20 months pending the results of an extensive series of safety reviews. As a result the Apollo command module underwent many design changes which were incorporated into the Block II series command modules. The Apollo 7 mission was actually a test flight of the newly designed Block 11 series command module, which served to be a confidence booster for NASA. Walter M. Schirra wanted to name the Apollo 7 Command module “Phoenix” in memory of the late Apollo 1 crew, but NASA rejected the idea. This became the first manned Apollo flight and was piloted by Walter Schirra, Donn Eisele and Walter Cunningham. All of the systems and procedures required for the moon mission were flight-tested for the first time with this vehicle during its 163 Earth orbits in 10 days 20 hours and 9 minutes. The craft traveled a total distance of 4,539,959 miles. The 99 Names of God Sandow Birk & Elyse Pignolet ✯

This collaborative art project by Sandow Birk and Elyse, is a series of illustrations depicting the five airports and departure gates that were involved in the attacks of September 11, 2001. The title refers to the 99 most perfect names for God that are in the Qur’an and in the Hadith. Each of the names are often represented with calligraphy and elaborate decorations that were derived from ornamentation that has been found in historical, handillustrated Qur’ans. Sandow Birk investigates the Qur’an as the divine message from God to mankind in his series American Qur’an. He follows the centuries old tradition of using color inks to render the calligraphy by hand. Sandow aims to open a sort of dialogue with his viewers; one that serves both to deconstruct negative stereotypes that people may have against both the beliefs and those who practice Islam, as well as to present a more accessible Qur’an that may allow for a deeper understanding of how this religion relates with traditional JudeoChristian beliefs. Born in Oakland, California, Artist Elyse Pignolet is an American artist with Filipino heritage. She primarily works in the medium of ceramics, creating art that deals with social issues, urban themes, and current socio-political topics from contemporary news articles. Known for her work that contrasts the extensive history of ceramics with the temporary nature of graffiti, her other projects and drawings begin with the deconstruction of city grids, maps and architectural plans, which are then re-assembled into multilayered, semi-abstract compositions. Art in Motion An Ode to Graffiti ✯

Since the spring of 2006, Oak Cliff artist Chris Bingham has worked to create new works and remain passionate about his craft. As a high school art teacher, he seeks to draw that same driving passion out of his students. For his most recent exhibition, Chris will be exhibiting a collection of new works at the Norwood Flynn Gallery, opening with an artist’s reception December 8. In his latest works, Chris will be focusing on his long-standing fascination with the artistic elements of graffiti. In many ways this art-form is abused and misunderstood. It often appears on the sides of buildings as vandalism or as a forewarning from one gang to another that territory has been claimed. It is treated as a scourge by city governments who work quickly to sandblast it from public properties. In the art world, it is disrespected and often referred to as artless, or regarded as the lowest form of art. In this exhibition, Bingham highlights the power this artistic style has on the art world as well as the community at large. In this series of oil paintings on canvas, he has added geometric patterns to a series of train graffiti in an attempt to elevate the viewer’s thoughts about graffiti itself. He has removed the dismal, dark and unlawful context and replaced it with traditional artistic elements, thus turning something that is traditionally not respected as fine art, into a work that still holds the beauty and integrity of the graffiti style. Chris regularly exhibits around the DFW area, as well as across Texas. He was a finalist for the Hunting Art Prize in 2011. White Noise Perspective ✯

The artists in this show will use painting as a framework by which public information such as history, media and even figures of speech can be used and misused as artistic content and even points of reference. By examining art derived in this way, the viewer is forced to consider the work as it relates to themselves. By taking something so familiar, filtering it, deconstructing it and reassembling it, the artist creates sort of a visual equivalent to “white noise.” Gallery: Circuit 12 Gallery Exhibition: Closes January 12 Details: www.Circuit12.com ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

David “Buzz” Baldwin Passion for Nature ✯

David Baldwin developed his passion for nature and plants while growing up on his family’s farm in Pennsylvania. It was this relationship with the land and natural elements as well as his natural penchant for art that led him to pursue a career in landscape architecture. Throughout his cultivation of the land and daily interaction with flowers in all of their splendor he began to notice the small, almost microscopic beauty that was hidden within the textures and colors of the flora. In his paintings, he seeks to reverse the macro to the micro and like nature, his works of art seem to be constantly evolving. For the artist, the beauty of nature can evoke feelings of spirituality. He wishes to inspire his viewers by creating works that reveal the mysterious, intriguing and thought provoking elements contained within the wonders of nature. In many of his works, he includes an element of surprise for the viewer; in others, he creates levels of detail that are seemingly hidden from within as they can not be recognized without closer examination of the work. Since moving to Texas in 1976, Baldwin has operated a landscape architecture company with which he perfects his skills for art and design. His most notable works include: Garland’s Harris Hollabaugh Park, Garland Downtown Urban Design Standards and The Atrium at the Patty Granville Arts Center, He is currently working on the Garland Downtown Square redevelopment project , the Garland City Center project and the master planning of Central Park. He began painting again after a 45-year hiatus in 2007. Other than childhood art classes and a few scattered art classes in college, the artist has had no formal training in art. LIMBO

Aja Martin ✯

Aja Martin, associated with the Nasher Sculpture Center, has curated a juried exhibition including nine local, regional, national and international artists. The title, “Limbo,” is a derivative of the term ‘liminal,’ which was coined in the 19th century. This selective installation of contemporary drawing, painting, mixed media sculpture, and photography serves to speak to the thresholds, that which is in-between, transitional and that which is impending, but yet to come. The Limbo exhibition allows viewers to experience “liminality” as they pass from one gallery to the next, absorbing and evaluating the works that lie within each of the nine artist-driven spaces. Culled from a group of over 60 submitting artists, Aja Martin will present an initial round of nine finalists to the panel of jurors, including; Catherine Craft of the Nasher Sculpture Center, artist Shane Pennington, and W.A.A.S. Gallery owner, Brandy Adams. The artists who will be exhibiting include: Francesca Bifulco of Rome, Italy; Kristen Cochran representing Dallas, Texas; Melissa Dickenson, of San Diego, California; Barrett Emke, from Kansas City, Missouri; Annie Farrar, from Baltimore, Maryland; Abigail Mayfield of Austin, Texas; Caroline Oliver, also from Dallas, Texas; John Revett, of Amarillo, Texas and Kathryn Van Steenhuyse, representing Wichita, Kansas. Aja Martin is an emerging independent curator and researcher who participates in the Dallas art community through curatorial and writing projects on altered environments and site-specific work in the US and Latin America. Batman Live!

Holy Pyrotechnics Batman! ✯

This $15 million, high-intensity, stunt and story production is completed with 43 cast members, a bevy of pyrotechnics and 105-ft. video video wall. The show was faithfully adapted from the DC Comics characters and stories and has more in common with the Batman comics and Tim Burton styled films than graphic novels or the Christopher Nolan movies. The plot focuses on Dick Grayson and his quest to avenge the death of his parents. This leads him to follow in the footsteps of his hero; a mysterious vigilante known as Batman, against the wishes of Dick’s legal guardian, billionaire Bruce Wayne. Together Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne/Batman encounter a series of adventures and uncover many dark secrets that eventually transform them into the legendary crime-fighting duo; Batman and Robin. Set against the backdrop of a corrupt, broken and crime-ridden Gotham City, Batman and Robin battle against a unique set of foes who have all been united by the Joker. Audiences will follow this adventure to the big top at Haly’s Circus, where the Flying Graysons, Dick and his parents regularly perform their special brand of acrobatics without a net. This is where mob-boss Tony Zucco tampers with the Flying Grayson’s ropes, thus killing Dick’s parents. From the heights of the big top to the depths of the Elizabeth Arkham Asylum, audiences will plunge to follow the plotting and eventual outbreak of many of Batman’s fiercest foes, including: the Joker, Catwoman, the Riddler, TwoFace, Scarecrow and Harley Quinn. Other crucial venues are featured as well including the glamorously posh Iceberg Lounge; a nightclub front for the Penguin’s more sinister operations and of course, the dark and mysterious Batcave where Batman crafts his masterful plans for revenge and justice. Jekyll & Hyde

Constantine Maroulis ✯

This Broadway musical is based on Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” It was originally adapted for the stage by writer Steve Cuden and Tony and Grammy Award nominated composer Frank Wildhorn. Wildhorn is perhaps best known for his work on the music for this broadway show and for writing the #1 hit song, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” for Whitney Houston. Jekyll & Hyde, the musical was actually written in 1980, but due to lack of financing, the production did not see the stage until 1990, after the lyrics had been rewritten with the award-winning songwriter Leslie Bricusse. Jeckyll and Hide ran on Broadway from 1997 through 2001. The plot centers around a lawyer in Victorian-era London who investigates the strange, sinister and inexplicable events surrounding his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll and an evil man by the name of Edward Hyde. In this mysterious case, it would seem that, with the help of a special potion, there are two personalities living within one man; one that is inherently good and the other diabolically evil. The Broadway production is known for such classic songs as “This is the Moment,” “A New Life” and “Someone Like You.” It is currently being revived on Broadway for a limited engagement in April of 2013, following a 25-city national tour. This performance stars American Idol finalist and Tony Award nominee Constantine Maroulis in the lead role, opposite R&B artist Deborah Cox as Lucy and “Wicked” Broadway star, Teal Wicks. XSR: Die

Murder Mystery ✯

XSR: Die is a theater direction which means “Cross Stage Right and Die.” This production is part of Kurt Klienmann’s 16-play, Living Black & White murder mystery series which chronicles the adventures of a hapless but lovable wanna-be actor named Harry Hunsacker, who has been turned into a quasi detective. It’s opening night for the world premiere of famed playwright, Clayton Farrell’s latest work. Backstage at Broadway Theatre is abuzz with nervous energy and frantic preparation as the tyrannical director, Douglas Mallory announces that he wants to make a change to the most important scene in the play; the climax! At that moment, a shot rings out and the bullet’s aim is proven true as an unsuspecting victim falls dead. Will the killer get away with it? Probably, as Harry Hunsacker has just wandered into the wrong theater and things are about to get hairy. Living Black & White is a technique that was developed at Pegasus Theatre in 2005 by Klienmann, who uses a special type of makeup, precise lighting techniques, specially-designed costumes and set creation in combination with a stylized acting method to create the illusion that the audience is watching a black and white movie from the 1930’s. This technique is a closely-guarded secret for Kleinmann who has his actors sign confidentiality agreements before he will teach them the techniques. Prior to a performance, before even the script is discussed with his actors, Kleinmann must teach the actors how to apply the special makeup, move about the stage, interact with others onstage in a way that won’t remove or transfer the special makeup and even how to speak without showing the pink of the actor’s tongues. The effect is extremely convincing and has granted Pegasus Theatre a great deal of critical acclaim. The Impossible

Ewan McGregor / Naomi Watts ✯

A powerful story based on one family’s survival of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, The Impossible stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor and is directed by J.A. Bayona. Maria (played by Naomi Watts), Henry (played by Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in a tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her. Based on a true story, The Impossible is the unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, The Impossible is a journey to the core of the human heart. In 2004, the day after Christmas, the sea roiled and roared and devoured the western coast of Thailand—the worst natural disaster ever to strike the country. The deadly tidal waves – crashing onto Thailand’s beach communities in ten-minute intervals – resulted in over 5,000 deaths and over 2,800 missing souls and created 1480 orphans, in just that country alone. “We’re not just dealing with a survival film. It also raises the question of who you want to survive for and in what way. There is something very powerful that goes beyond the tragic and speaks of the human condition, something that moves people very deeply when they hear the story,” Bayona says. This is Bayona’s follow-up to his hit The Orphanage. Director: Juan Antonip Bayona Rated: PG-13 Opens: December 21 ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

Chrildren’s Holiday Parade 25th Annual Event ✯

In 1987, both the Adolphus Hotel and Children’s Medical Center celebrated their 75th anniversaries. To celebrate these landmarks and to say thank you to the community for its support, the hotel proposed the idea of having a Christmas Parade. This year, the parade will have a new route starting at City Hall and ending just past The Adolphus Hotel. The purpose of the parade would be to kick off the holiday season, draw citizens as well as visitors to Downtown Dallas to encourage revitalization efforts and to serve as a fundraiser for the hospital. In 1988, its inaugural year, the parade attracted nearly 70,000 viewers and became affectionately known as “The Miracle on Commerce Street.” In 1993, Neiman Marcus became the title sponsor and remained so for 15 years. Today, the Children’s Medical Center Holiday Parade draws crowds of 350,000 and more than 350 television stations in 159 markets have syndicated the showing of the parade and it has become a North Texas holiday tradition. This year the signature sponsor is Pizza Hut and the parade will be used to raise money for the Child Life Department at Children’s Medical Center. Child Life staff members provide age-appropriate information to help children cope with the hospital and prepare them emotionally for invasive procedures and surgery. In many cases a child may need to understand where a heart comes when they or a loved one is waiting for a heart transplant or why their sibling “caught” cancer and if it is contagious. Techniques used by this program include diagnosis-specific education, medical play and psychological preparation. Services like Child Life are not covered by insurance and are funded solely by philanthropy. Features of this year’s parade include: numerous local marching bands, elaborately decorated holiday floats, larger-than-life balloons, baton twirlers and more. p.e.a.r.l. Girl’s Power Lunch Etiquette Luncheon ✯

Imagine you have been invited to a prestigious luncheon in one of Dallas’s finest restaurants. You sit at an elegant table that has been set with gleaming silverware and finely pressed linens. You, yourself are dressed in your finest attire. Everything is perfect, except that you have no idea which tea glass is yours. The array of silverware before you is overwhelming. You don’t know which napkin is yours, what bread plate to use and suddenly you feel like a round wheel trying to sit neatly in a square peg. The P.E.A.R.L Girls Power Lunch was created as a workshop to empower young girls to dine with confidence and grace. During this fun and elegant four-course luncheon, young ladies will learn how to enter the room and be seated by a gentleman. They will be given poise and posture skills, learn to sit gracefully and be properly introduced, including the art of shaking hands. These young ladies will make use of pleasant conversation starters and begin to understand the guidelines of modern social etiquette. By the end of the luncheon, these girls will know how to use their napkin and every utensil within the place setting, as well as being able to set a formal dining table. They will even learn to dine in both American and Continental styles. P.E.A.R.L, which stands for Poised, Elegant and Responsible Leaders, has the mission statement of empowering young ladies to not only believe in themselves, but love themselves and to know where they are headed in life. The P.E.A.R.L Girl’s program focuses on four main areas of self development: etiquette, self-esteem, innerbeauty and empowerment. In addition to the power luncheons, the organization also holds empowerment hours where girls from 7 to 17 can safely explore the many facets of growing up. They believe with education, etiquette and empowerment comes success. Venue: Hotel Indigo Event: December 15 Details: www.Pearl-Girls.org ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

41st Annual Candelight Annual Holiday Festival ✯

This annual holiday festival provides the chance for modern Dallas citizens to travel back in time and experience a Christmas holiday season as it was celebrated in North Texas during the Victorian era. Learn the traditions that were practiced and held sacred by people during that era for both Christmas and Hanukkah. Experience an authentic carriage ride along a candlelit path pulled by the park’s two Mammoth Jack donkeys, Nip and Tuck. Enjoy delicious holiday treats from Guild of Dallas Heritage Village bake sale or enjoy treats with local flavor from the Cedar food truck park within the village grounds. Candlelight traditions of hot chocolate and kettle korn will be on hand. Have your family photo taken with St. Nicholas beside the bandstand. Gather around for story-telling time and learn the art of hand-weaving, blacksmithing and other crafts and trades from that period in history. Enjoy performances by local dance troupes, regional choirs and an assortment of other entertainers who will be performing on three main stages, including the Main Street Stage, The Pilot Grove Church and the Renner School. Catch an authentic tune from the park’s strolling caroling choir who will make their way throughout the village and historic buildings. Watch as interpreters in traditional costumes and adornment bring history to life within the Heritage museum. All of the historic buildings will be fully decorated with authentic holiday decor from 18401910. The mission of Dallas Heritage Village is to collect, preserve and teach the history of Dallas and North Central Texas. Located in historic Old City Park, the museum uses its collections to sponsor research, publication and exhibitions as well as to provide educational opportunities for people of all ages. The land the park now resides upon became Dallas’s first city park.
