A Night At The Mansion Of

THE GREAT GATSBY Where The Hotel Crescent Court When March 2 Contact cotillionclubgala@gmail.com

On March 2nd, The Crescent Hotel will be magically transformed into the palatial mansion of Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1920s novel, The Great Gatsby. The decor of the hotel is right on point for a black tie 20s evening. The idea is that the guests will walk down the hallway of the Crescent and step into Gatsby’s world that we all know from the best-seller. The rooms are all named after parts of his mansion- the conservatory or the library, the great room, a parlour, the drawing room...you get the idea. Guests can sip on drinks, visit the cigar roller, play casino games and hit the dance floor with live music from Good Question. There will be many photo ops and a fabulous silent auction to raise money for Jonathan’s Place. A great team of volunteers has worked on the event and it is expected to raise a great crowd and hopefully a lot of money they can give back to charity. There are also some surprises in store for guests as well- which they can’t give away- but it will be sure to be a fun time had by all. The Chairs are Carolyn Angiolillo and Sara Huggins. The Dallas Cotillion Club is hosting the benefit. It is one of Dallas’s oldest and most prestigious social clubs. The organization was formed by four Idelwilde Debutantes seeking a way to create fellowship and long-last friendship among young, professional women in Dallas. Jonathan’s Place is the recipient. Kelly Clarkson Verizon Theatre ✯

Since bursting onto the music scene 10 years ago, Kelly Clarkson has released 5 studio albums, sold more than 20 million albums worldwide, 10 million albums in the US and has had 7 singles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. She is the recipient of 2 Grammy Awards, 2 American Music Awards, 2 MTV Awards and 11 Billboard Awards. Clarkson’s 2009 album All I Ever Wanted debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and produced the smash singles “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Already Gone.” Her hits such as “Miss Independent,” “Since U Been Gone,” “Walk Away,” “Never Again,” and now “Mr. Know It All,” are bold empowerment anthems, which she sells to the fullest with her powerhouse voice and down-to-earth relatability. Clarkson says her last album, Stronger, was influenced by Tina Turner, Prince, Sheryl Crow, and Radiohead. It will thrill those who love Clarkson for her resilience. The album is filled with candid, emotionally raw tunes like “The War Is Over,” and “Honestly,” as well as “You Love Me”, “Einstein”, and the title track, which finds Clarkson putting a fresh spin on Nietzsche’s adage that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and declaring “it doesn’t mean I’m over ’cause you’re gone.” That fact that these gutsy sentiments are wrapped in fizzy pop melodies, bright choruses, and driving dancefloor-friendly beats only makes them that much more appealing. “The whole album is very much about strength and empowerment, so ‘Stronger’ felt like the perfect title,” Clarkson says. “Plus that song is just a gold mine — it’s a little bit pop, a little bit pop-rock, a little bit urban, a little bit dance, and it ties everything in. And everybody loves that message. ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’ It’s a perfect representation of my life.” Genre: Pop Date: March 1 Details: www.TicketMaster.com ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

The Laurie Berkner Band Annette Strauss Square ✯

Laurie Berkner has been a professional musician since 1992, but her success as a children’s recording artist was a surprise to her. “It was so unexpected,” says Laurie. “I’d been performing in rock bands (including Lois Lane, an all-female cover band) and struggling to write original music. Writing music for kids has not been a struggle at all. The more I started working on material for children, the more I realized that it opened up creativity in me that I never knew I had.” These days critics widely acknowledge Laurie’s major contribution toward launching what is now dubbed the progressive “kindie rock” movement – i.e. less saccharine, more rocking music that is not dumbed down for children. But it wasn’t simply an enormous amount of talent that helped create an entire genre and skyrocketed Laurie to her current position as “the queen of children’s music”. It was an ability to gain parents’ enthusiasm for the songs as well. According to Laurie, “When I’m writing a song, I’m thinking about whether the kids will like it and whether I’m going to connect to them through it. I’m also thinking about whether I want to sing it over and over again, so I guess that’s the part that connects with adults. ‘Old MacDonald Had A Farm’ is a great song for kids, but I couldn’t sing it 100 times!” Laurie continues to be inspired by her audience. “I want to create songs that matter for children,” she says. “I was singing once and saw a four-year-old girl shut her eyes and start swaying to the music. I thought, ‘That’s the reason I got into music.’ It keeps me wanting to do more.” The Laurie Berkner Band are: Laurie Berkner (guitar/vocals), Susie Lampert (keyboards), Adam Bernstein (bass) and Bob Golden (drums/percussion). Their concerts have been held across America at venues from the White House to Carnegie Hall. Genre: Kindie Rock Date: March 23 Details: www.AttPac.org

Chagall

Beyond Color ✯

Marc Zaharovich Chagall was one of the most successful artists of the 20th century. He was able to produce works in quite nearly every artistic medium from oil on canvas to sketch artistry and illustrations, working with stained glass mediums, performing fabric work through tapestries and creating sculpture and ceramic works as well as fine art prints. Of Chagall’s most notable works outside of any museum, he created stained glass windows for the two cathedrals; Notre Dame de Reims in the ChampagneArdenne region of France and the Saint Étienne de Metz Cathedral in Lorraine, France. His large-scale paintings include a portion of the ceiling of the Paris Opera. Incredibly, it was a wonder that Chagall ever learned to be an artist at all. At the time of his birth in the Russian Empire, Jewish children were not allowed to attend regular schools or universities and there were restricted areas of town. In the traditional Jewish schools, art was not a subject taught and his family did not possess any art for their home. At the age of 13, his mother found a way for him to attend public school and his passion for art was born the day he discovered a fellow student drawing. Chagall began copying images from books and his desire to become an artist grew. At the age of 19, he found a teacher who would instruct him free of charge, but the young artist soon outgrew the style of his teacher. This exhibition will place Chagall’s paintings alongside his works in sculpture, ceramics, and collage in an effort to explore the artist’s relationship with space and volume. This exhibition is co-organized by La Piscine Museum, Roubaix, France, and the Dallas Museum of Art and will be on display exclusively only in these two cities. Frederick Hart has been described as America’s greatest living representational artist. tures and then embeds one sculpture within another. Hart is most recognized for creating art that is classic in design and contemporary in its treatment. Hart’s love of sculpture was born when he was in college and created a bust of his girlfriend at the time. In doing so, he discovered an art style which not only had form, but also weight and substance. The artist gained interna-

tional acclaim for a work entitled, “ The Creation Sculptures,” which lie on the west facade of the Washington National Cathedral. The works were commissioned in 1974. Perhaps the most visited work of Hart’s is “The Three Soldiers” which stands at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Hart never had a major mu-

seum show or retrospective of his art during his lifetime, despite the fact that his unique acrylic sculptures were widely popular in art galleries and by the end of his life, were selling for upwards of $300,000. Hart was, however, awarded the National Medal of Arts, which is the highest honor that is given to artists by the United States Government. This distinction places him

among the most distinguished American artists of the 20th Century. During his lifetime, Hart was creating monumental sculptures that were dramatically out of step with the pop art movement of the time. Frederick Hart passed away suddenly in 1999, just two days after doctors had diagnosed the artist with advanced lung cancer.

GALLERIES

Raven’s Riddle Bill & Hans Haveron ✯

This exhibition is the first to showcase works by this father/son duo; Texas artist, Bill Haveron and his son, Los Angeles artist Hans Haveron. This exhibit is a culmination of two bodies of work and a lifelong dream for each of these two artists. The title of the show, Raven’s Riddle is both true to the works displayed and to a deeper meaning. The family name, Haveron was actually spelled Havran in its original Czech which means “The Raven.” The name was altered to Haveron upon the family’s immigration to Texas. The “Riddle” is symbolic of a mischievous puzzle, one that is both for sport and for intellect. Raven’s Riddle will feature the typical surrealistic and symbolic styles in which both men are known to work. Hans often uses moths, butterflies and fish which all have a symbolic meaning to the artist. The moth, for example, is representative of that force which is constantly striving for the light. Bill likes to focus his work upon stories. He likes to uncover that which is hidden. Viewed together, the works of each artist tell a very unique, very personal sort of story; one that illustrates the reconciliation, healing and forgiveness that has taken place between the two artists to get them to where they are today. Hans ran away from his Texas home when he was just fifteen years old. Elements of his early childhood struggles are omni-present in his work. In many works, both artists have included elements that speak to the larger pictures of their lives; the path to selfdiscovery and the artistic as well as spiritual evolutionary process. These philosophical riddles can be worked out as one views them, in large drawings, elaborate paintings and painted assemblage. Idols of the KING! A Funny and Touching Two-Act Musical written by Ronnie Claire Edwards, who played Corabeth on The Waltons, and storied screen writer Allen Crowe, who wrote for TV’s Evening Shade and Designing Women. The Idols of the King is a musical tribute to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, his legacy, his career and his incredibly loyal fans. Many hit songs made famous by the legendary entertainer are featured in the show including “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Burning Love”, “Love Me Tender” and “Jail House Rock.” The show has had audiences clapping along, laughing and reliving those old days of rock when “The Pelvis” was the King. With lightning-fast costume changes, multiple characters are brought to life, including a grocery clerk, a visionary, a Las Vegas showgirl and a pair of hitchhikers. Some of the characters are hilarious, such as the aging couple who travel around exhibiting the wash basin

Elvis used at their gas station sometime in the 1970s. Some are just plain bizarre—like one fellow who’s convinced that dentists are conspiring with the US government to place spy devices in tooth fillings, and that Elvis is speaking to him in code through a form letter. Best of all are the moments that bring tears to the eye: a fragile flower child whose delusions are alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, a fragile waitress with a sick child Elvis helped, and a spinster piano teacher who escapes into fantasies of Elvis being her man. The production is a look at the fans that immortalized the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Theater: Theatre 3 Show: Through March 30 Details: www.Theatre3Dallas.com

Mary Poppins

Disney Classic Musical ✯

This Walt Disney theatrical musical is based on the series of children’s books by P.L. Travers of the same name and the 1964 Disney film starring Julie Andrews. The musical features music from the film and lyrics that were written by the Academy Award winning Sherman Brothers, as well as additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The musical incorporates a few scenes that were included in the book series, but were omitted from the film, including a walking statue and a ladder that rises all the way to the stars in the night sky. The original West End production sparked a mild controversy shortly after it opened as the show banned children below a certain age, claiming that the production was “too scary” for young children. The ban remained in place the entire run of the show. In March of 2005, Julie Andrews, who played Mary Poppins in the film version attended the show at Prince Edward Theatre and appeared onstage during the curtain calls where she gave a speech praising the production for its interpretation of the classic story. The Broadway production debuted November 16, 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre starring Ashley Brown as Mary Poppins and Gavin Lee as Bert. On July 16, 2011, the Broadway production surpassed the production of Pippin when it became the 30th longest running show in Broadway history. March 3, 2013 will mark the end of the Broadway production to make way for the stage adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin. For the touring productions such as this, scenic designer Bob Crowley changed the sets to reduce the size of the Banks family household and he removed some of the less crucial intermediate scenes so that smaller venues could accommodate the largescale needs of the production. This theatrical production celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Newbury medal winning book by Madeleine L’Engle. The story follows a 14 year old girl named Meg, who, despite great intelligence, is a poor performer at school. Meg’s father, a scientist has recently gone missing and Meg feels that his disappearance is the result of his work with a mysterious project known as the Tesseract. In science, a tesseract, also known as a hypercube, is a four dimensional cubical shape which resembles a cube within a cube, with spokes connecting the corners of each cube together. In the story, Meg and her brother along with a schoolmate are able to travel through time using a tesseract which acts as a sort of wormhole or portal as it serves to bend the structure of the spacetime continuum. This is where the title comes into play as the tesseract figuratively creates a “wrinkle” in time. The author has spoken at length about the difficulty she had publishing the book. It was initially rejected by 26 different publishers on the basis of the fact that it was very different from other children’s publications at the time and due to its unique story content, many publishers felt that it was uncertain as to whether it was actually a children’s book or should have been created more for adults. Likewise, it starred a female protagonist in what was decidedly a science fiction book and in the 60’s this was a story character treatment that simply wasn’t done. The novel was adapted as a play by John Glore in 2010. The original stage play was written for six actors playing 12 different parts and it premiered in Costa Mesa, California. It has also been formatted into an Opera and a Graphic Novel. This musical comedy was lovingly ripped off from the 1975 film, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and can be described as a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian legend, “Camelot.” The title was chosen not only on the basis that it sounded like Camelot, but also because there was a line from the movie in which the characters sing, “We eat ham and jam and spam a lot!” The original Broadway production won three Tony awards. oz the great and powerful James Franco / Mila Kunis ✯

Director Sam Raimi’s new fantasyadventure, Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful, imagines the origins of the beloved wizard character, who made his debut in author L. Frank Baum’s first book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. As a cinematic prequel to the book, the film explores the backstory of the wizard character and offers a unique, original movie-going experience. The imaginative story follows Oscar Diggs (played by James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, who is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. There, Oscar thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (played by Mila Kunis), Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful wizard but into a better man as well. “This film explains how all the characters became who they are and explains their origins so you understand them a little more,” Kunis said. “It brings a little more sincerity and truth to all the characters. And, while being funny and endearing, it very much stays true to the original concepts that L. Frank Baum created.” Franco adds his take on the film, saying, “In some ways, the story in our film is a metaphor and an analogy to what we all do as filmmakers. Oz is a magician. He puts on shows. In the Land of Oz, he creates illusions for different reasons. And that’s basically what a movie is, it’s creating an illusion. It’s creating an imaginary world for an audience.” Director: Sam Raimi Rated: PG Opens: March 8 ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

Emperor

Tommy Lee Jones / Matthew Fox ✯

A gripping tale of love and honor forged between fierce enemies of war, Emperor unfolds the story, inspired by true events, of the bold and secret moves that won the peace in the shadows of postwar Japan. Matthew Fox (World War Z, Lost) joins with Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln, No Country For Old Men), newcomer Eriko Hatsune and award-winning Japanese star Toshiyuki Nishida to bring to life the American occupation of Japan in the perilous and unpredictable days just after Emperor Hirohito’s World War II surrender. As General Douglas MacArthur (played by Tommy Lee Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an expert in Japanese culture – and psychological warfare – General Bonner Fellers (played by Matthew Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught between the high-wire political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school teacher (played by Eriko Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers can be certain only that the tricky subterfuge about to play out will forever change the history of two nations and his heart. The story of Emperor is based on the resonant, real events of 1945, when General MacArthur took control of a shell-shocked Japan on behalf of the U.S and Bonner Fellers worked covertly to investigate the Emperor’s fate while the future of the nation hung in the balance. Entwined with an against-the-odds romance, the story traverses the conflicting loyalties between heart and homeland, between revenge and justice, as the world rebuilds from the ruins of war. DAllas Blooms Festival Annual Spring Event

Saturday, April 6th

8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Dallas Arboretum’s nationally acclaimed floral festival Dallas Blooms. Presented by Bank of America, the festival begins March 2 and continues through April 7. “The Arboretum’s Dallas Blooms is one of the most beautiful sights to see in the Southwest and Bank of America is proud to be the presenting sponsor this year,” said Gillian Breidenbach, Bank of America. “This is a must-see event for Dallas residents and visitors - recognized as one of the Top 14 Places in the World to see spring flowers.” Dallas Blooms features 500,000 spring-blooming bulbs including tulips, daffodils, Dutch Iris and hyacinths, in addition to 100,000 pansies, violas, poppies and thousands of other annuals and perennials. During the festival, over 100 Cherry Blossom trees bloom for a ten day period. Then the finale of this spring celebration is the mass flowering of the garden’s collection of 6,000 azaleas that bloom into April. “It is once again time for those magical days at the Dallas Arboretum when all your favorite spring flowers burst into bloom,” said Dave Forehand, Vice President of Gardens at the Dallas Arboretum. “Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, cherry blossoms, azaleas and more put on our famous flower show, Dallas Blooms.” The incredible work of botanical design accomplished by our horticulture department in displays throughout the garden will be matched this year by “The Adventures of Great Explorers” exhibit. Five explorers: Marco Polo, Ponce de Leon, Cabeza de Vaca, Captain James Cook, and Lewis & Clark will be showcased with small replication playhouses of destinations where each explorer traveled. The Arboretum’s theme this year embraces adventure with the upcoming opening of the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden.

North Texas Irish Festval 31st Annual Event ✯

This annual festival is sponsored by the Southwest Celtic Music Association in an effort to promote an interest in the Celtic cultures of the world and to provide a forum for unity and celebration among the regional Celtic cultures living in the Southwest United States. In 1983, members of the organization held the first Texas Ceili at Nick Farley’s lounge. Ceili dances are a popular form of folk dancing in Ireland. Nick and his business partner Pete thought they would hold a small gathering of Celtic musicians, their friends and music supporters. The event was so popular that the crowd filled the bar and spilled out into the parking lot with anxious music fans straining to hear the succession of bands from the open doors. Shortly after, a group of supporters formed and the North Texas Irish Festival was born. Now in its 31st year, attendees of the festival have come to enjoy the seemingly endless lineup of musicians and cultural performers. The organizers strive to create a balance between top headlining performers and the local and regional musicians, storytellers, dancers, educational workshops and cultural presentations. This year the featured musicians include: Behan, Beyond the Pale, Blue Fiddle, Don Gabbert, Five Second Rule, Flashpoint, Hares on the Mountain, Irish Rogues, Jiggernaut and more. In addition to music, there is also an endless supply of food vendors selling all types of celtic food favorites as well as American standard festival fare and plenty of shopping opportunities for the entire family, including Fido. The North Texas Irish Festival is proud of the fact that they hold one of the most pet-friendly events in Dallas. They encourage visitors to bring their dogs to the park and they provide complimentary booth space to local pet adoption societies.
