Kid To Do

Benefit for Dallas Zoo ✯

Rob and Julie Little are chairing this annual family event that will take place in the Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo, the Giants of Savanna, Cat Green and other areas of the Dallas Zoo. Kid To Do offers kid-friendly fare and features entertainment such as bounce houses, a DJ, face painting, and arts and crafts as well as unique animal encounters, a private bird show in the Wildlife Amphitheater, and much more! This year’s event will also be a part of the Dallas Zoo’s year-long celebration of its 125th Anniversary. After the monkeys threw such a successful bash at last year’s inaugural Kid To Do, Jamie the Giraffe is raising the bar for this year’s event, Kid To Do: Party Safari. She’s even recruited fellow party animals, Kellie Rasberry from the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning show on KISS FM, and her daughter Emma Kelly, to join in the fun as honorary event chairs! The Honorary Chef Family will be Tracy and Kent Rathbun. Underwriting chairs are Bonner and Thomas Allen and Restaurant Chairs are Gretel and Justin Shipley. Ticket cost is $75 and children two and under get in for free. The Dallas Zoo, founded in 1888, began with just two deer and two mountain lions in City Park. It later moved to Fair Park in 1909 and quickly outgrew its second home, moving to Marsalis Park in 1912 where it stands today. Throughout the past 100 years, numerous upgrades have been made and collections expanded. In 1955, the Dallas Zoological Society was established as a non-profit to support the Zoo which is home to more than 2,000 animals, and today is thriving with new exhibits such as the Koala Walkabout presented by Kimberly-Clark Corporation, SOAR, A Festival of Flight, and the Giants of the Savanna. The Giants of Savanna most recently become the only exhibit in North America to mix elephants with zebras, giraffes, impalas and ostriches. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Dallas Museum of Art has brought together the works of art installed in the president’s suite at the Hotel Texas during his fateful trip in 1963.

Of Art For The Presidential Suite 1963 Is Now On Exhibit At DMA The original installation, orchestrated by a small group of Fort Worth art collectors, was created especially for the president and first lady in celebration of their overnight visit to the city and included paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Thomas Eakins, Lyonel

Feininger, Franz Kline and Marsden Hartley with sculptures by Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore, among others. Five days prior to the presidential couple’s arrival in Fort Worth, descriptions of the presidential suite at the Hotel Texas were released to the

public. Unhappy with the couple’s accommodations, Owen Day, the art critic for the Fort Worth Press, proposed the idea of the installation to prominent art collector and leader of the Fort Worth Art Association Samuel Benton Cantey III. With the sup-

port of Ruth Carter Johnson (now Ruth Carter Stevenson), board president for the Amon Carter Museum of American Art; collector Ted Weiner; and Mitchell Wilder, the Amon Carter Director, Cantey conceived a three-part exhibition that would unfold

in the parlor, master bedroom, and second bedroom of Suite 850. Drawing on local private and public art collections, each room of the suite was outfitted with works of art that befitted the tastes and interests of President Kennedy and the first lady.

Sightings Nathan Mabry ✯

Los Angeles-based artist Nathan Mabry installed works in the garden at the Nasher for this exhibition. Inspired by sources ranging from archaeology and ethnology to Dada and Surrealism, Mabry, fuses various aesthetics together to create sculptures that are poignant, humorous, critical and admiring. For “Sightings,” Mabry has created a new sculpture, “Two Vessels (Unpacked),” as well as install his group of six figures based on Rodin’s “Burghers of Calais, Process Art” that has never before been shown in the United States. Mabry’s work has been described as a mix between primitive sculpture and art in the style of minimalism. He derives his influence from artists such as Sol LeWitt, John McCracken and Carl Andre. American artist Sol Le Witt rose to fame in the late 1960’s with what he referred to as “wall drawings” and “structures,” a term that he preferred to the word “sculpture.” John McCracken was a contemporary artist who lived and worked in both Sante Fe, New Mexico and New York. He is perhaps best known for his early works in which he derived objects of art from company logos such as the Chevron Corporation logo. In 1966, McCracken generated his signature sculptural form which was simply a plank; a narrow, single-colored rectangular board which he leaned at an angle to the wall. Carl Andre is an American minimalist artist who is recognized for his ordered linear format and grid format sculptures. In many of Mabry’s works, it is easy to identify the elements of his influences be it the geometrical method of LeWitt’s sculptures, the simplicity or modernist adaptation of McCracken or the highly ordered grids so present in the work of Andre. Mabry’s works are exhibited in the United States, Europe and across Asia. Hill Country & LBJ Ranch

Photographers Capture Stunning Texas Imagery ery. Many people are familiar with the most recent Texas White House in Crawford, Texas, but the original Texas White House in the Texas Hill Country town of Stonewall, was home to our 36th President, Lyndon B. Johnson, his wife, Lady Bird, and their family. In his five-year presiden-

cy in the 1960s, LBJ spent almost 25% of his time at the ranch. President Johnson had a deep attachment for the place and its heritage. The LBJ Ranch was where he was born, lived, died, and was buried. After the President’s death in 1973, Mrs. Johnson continued

to live at the Ranch part time until her death in 2007. Visitors are now able to tour the Ranch at their own pace in their private vehicle with the ability to stop at sites along the way such as the President’s birthplace, Johnson family cemetery, and the Johnson’s ranch house.

In addition to the fine prints on display in the exhibit, HD video of the LBJ Ranch will be shown in the gallery, along with audio recordings of fascinating telephone conversations from the ranch between LBJ and others. The public is invited and admission is complimentary.

This exhibition, curated by David McCullough is a group exhibition of new works by six North Texas artists, including: David A. Dreyer, Vincent Falsetta, David McCullough, Michael Osbaldeston, Ricardo Paniagua and Michael Tichansky. McCullough has united these works with the hope of exploring both the artist’s relationship to the concepts of abstract art as well as to highlight any relational similarities. Each of the artists, despite having works that vary greatly, has a history of exploring both traditional and modern approaches to the creation of abstract art. Consequently both their approaches and the location in which they create has contributed to an artistic means of expression that has come to define the very essence of what it means to be an abstract artist in North Texas. David McCullough is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Texas at Dallas working in the fields of Art and Technology and Aesthetic Studies. McCullough has lived and worked in the North Texas region as a practicing artist, scholar and curator for many years. Michael Osbaldeston earned his BA and MA in Art from the University of Dallas. Osbaldeston is a founder and artist in residence at the Cumulus Studios in Irving, Texas. Vincent Falsetta lives and works in Denton, Texas as a professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of North Texas. Ricardo Paniagua is a self-taught artist, informing his own work through a keen observation of the world around him and questioning its history. David A. Dreyer earned his BFA and MFA at Southern Methodist University. He was a recipient of the Moss/Chumley Award from the Meadows Museum. Michael Tichansky received his BFA from Sul Ross State University and earned his MFA from Stephen F. Austin State University. City of Angels Musical Comedy ✯

In this musical comedy by Cy Coleman, David Zippel and Larry Gelbart, two worlds are humorously woven together; the so called “real world” of Stine, a writer who is working on adapting his book into a screenplay and the “reel world” of his fictional film. Set in Hollywood in the late 1940s, these two stories appear to happen simultaneously connecting a Hollywood comedy with a film noirstyled detective drama. The real-life scenes occur in color while the reellife scenes occur in black and white. In the drama, a gorgeous socialite named Alaura has just appeared at Stone’s office seeking his services to find her missing stepdaughter, Mallory. The course of the case takes Stone into extremely dangerous territory as he is beaten by thugs and framed for murder. Eventually his own past catches up with him and events spiral into an increasingly complicated set of circumstances made even more perilous by the fact that the author keeps re-writing them! Meanwhile, in the reel world, Stine is struggling to create the perfect screenplay for movie mogul, Buddy Fidler. Buddy, despite claiming to be a fan of Stine’s work, keeps demanding re-writes and plot changes which frustrates Stine to the point of almost giving up. The lines between reality and “reel”ality dissolve completely when Stine fulfills Buddy’s request to remove a racially-motivated plotline from the story and Stone, his main character revolts. This develops into a heated argument between Stine and Stone, creator and creation. Stine retaliates by writing a brutal scene in which Stone is severely beaten. Buddy, in the meanwhile has taken it upon himself to rewrite the film’s ending and has given himself co-writing credit. With Stone by his side, Stine rips up the script and quits. Based on Homer’s Classic ✯

Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare have restored Homer’s classic to a single, wandering poet who tells the tale of 3,000 years of war and destruction. Homer’s Iliad comes to life on a sparsely set stage, told by an old man who has seen far too much suffering. Traces

7 Fingers Troupe ✯

Traces was formed by the 7 Fingers troupe, which was created by two Cirque Du Soleil members; Shana Carroll and Gypsy Snider. The troupe is based out of Montreal, which is commonly referred to as the the circus capital of North America. Seven Fingers, in French, “Les 7 Doigts de la Main” is a twist on a popular French Idiom, “the five fingers of the hand,” which primarily is used to describe a group of distinct parts, moving and operating together for the accomplishment of a unified goal. In this case, the seven fingers represent the founding directors of the performance company who, by combining their distinct talents, work towards their common artistic goals with the beautiful, yet awkward dexterity of a seven-fingered hand. Whereas most circus acts, such as Cirque Du Soleil, tend to hide the individual aspects of the acrobats, “Traces” places them front and center as each acrobat shares something personal and intimate with the audience before he or she performs an extraordinary stunt. Within the span of a show, you might learn that one performer is obsessed with kittens while another hates the scratchy feel of wool sweaters. In this manner the acrobats create an intimate rapport and connection with the audience. Set in what appears as a rundown warehouse, the show doesn’t have a set storyline in that it does not necessarily follow a traditional, linear narrative. It has been described as part poetic performance, part street performance and part acrobatic circus. The main story, set to music by Radiohead, VAST, Blackalicious, and more, is told through acrobatic feats and asks the question, “If the world ended tomorrow, what would you leave behind?” Theater: Winspear Opera House Performance: June 11-23 Details: www.ATTpac.org ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

After Earth

Will Smith / Jaden Smith ✯

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (played by Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (played by Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home. After Earth begins more than one thousand years in the future – in fact, one thousand years after humanity was forced to abandon the only home they had ever known. Their new home would be the planet Nova Prime, and Nova Prime would know no greater family than the Raiges. Kitai’s father, Cypher Raige- became a legendary general in the United Ranger Corps, creating a legacy that Kitai is determined to emulate… but all is not going as planned. Cypher returns home from another long stint of service to learn that Kitai’s intense desire to succeed has led to recklessness, causing him to fail his first attempt to become a Ranger. In an attempt to bridge the rift between father and son, says Will Smith, “Kitai’s mother suggests that Cypher take him on a trip – spend some time together, bonding. But our ship crash-lands in the most inhospitable place in the universe for human beings – which is Earth.” Everything on Earth has evolved to kill human beings. With his father trapped in the wrecked ship, Kitai will have to brave these elements – and numerous highly evolved species – if he and his father are to have any chance of returning home. The lesson the father must teach his son is to conquer his fear. After Earth also stars Zoe Kravitz, Isabelle Fuhrman, Sophie Okonedo. Director: M. I’m So Excited

Antonio Banderas / Blanca Saurez ✯

A very varied group of people are in a precarious situation aboard a plane flying to Mexico City. A technical failure (a kind of justifiable negligence, even though it sounds contradictory, but that’s what human actions are) has endangered the lives of the passengers on Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots, hardened, experienced professionals are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. Life in the clouds is as complicated as it is at ground level, and for the same reasons, which could be summarized in two: sex and death. The travelers in Business Class consist of a pair of newlyweds, partygoers, worn out by their wedding celebration; a financier and embezzler; unscrupulous in business but also a father afflicted by his daughter’s estrangement; an inveterate Don Juan with an uneasy conscience who is trying to say goodbye to one of his women (girlfriends); a rural psychic; a queen of the gossip magazines and a Mexican with an important secret. Each of them has a project in Mexico City, either to work or to escape. They all have some kind of secret, not just the Mexican. Their defenselessness in the face of danger provokes a general catharsis among the passengers and the crew, and this ends up becoming the best way to escape from the idea of death. This catharsis, developed in the tone of a riotous, moral comedy, fills the time with sensational confessions that help them forget the anguish of the moment. I’m So Excited was written and directed by Pedro Almodovar. Director: Pedro Almodovar Rated: PG-13 Opens: June 28 ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

Discovery Lecture Series Moth Tales From the Dark ✯

Explore the night with mysterious creatures of the dark. Of course you will do so with one of the area’s most experienced entomologists, John Watts and you will also enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as you tour the Texas Discovery Gardens after hours. During this fun and informative discovery series, participants will learn about the fascinating behaviors, genetic and physiological adaptations and even the wide amount of diversity among moths. While most people think of the venue as a haven for the study and preservation of solely butterflies, moths are insects that are related to butterflies as they are both in the order Lepidotera. Experts have catalogued more than 160,000 species of moths which exceeds known species of butterflies by almost ten times. This event will be held in the evening as most moths are nocturnal. Moths are perhaps known best for two distinct behaviors; they eat your sweaters and they circle your porch light at night. Of all 160,000 species of moths, only a few are known to reside in closets and it isn’t actually the adults eating clothes. It’s the eggs they produce which hatch into hungry larvae that devour tiny holes in the sweaters you have stored for the summer. These particular moths avoid light at all costs, often hiding in dark corners of your house. This is primarily because they do not fly well and exposure to light might also make them visible to predators. They choose wool sweaters and other selective fabrics because they are one of the few organisms in the world which can digest keratin. As for the moths which circle your porch light, it still remains unknown to entomologists why moth’s do this. Learn amazing facts like these and more while enjoying a warm evening stroll through the gardens.
