Work is well underway on the 2013 Fashion Show & Luncheon, and they are excited to share the progress. Please mark your calendars for May 6. They will return to Brook Hollow Golf Club where Jan Strimple will, once again, produce one of the liveliest and most exciting fashion shows of the year. The Luncheon and Fashion Show raises funds for children’s cancer research at Children’s Medical Center while serving as a positive social-psychological experience for children undergoing cancer treatment. The Luncheon and Fashion Show is a day to rejoice in successes, reflect on losses and look forward to making childhood cancer curable. Nationwide 46 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. Each year, more than 300 children and adolescents at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas are newly diagnosed with cancer, with more than 650 children receiving therapy at any given time. Through CCF’s work, the survival rate for all childhood cancers is now close to 80%, significantly better than the 50% chance a child was given 30 years ago. The increase in survival is a huge improvement for some cancers, but some other childhood cancers still have a less than 50% cure rate. There is much work left to be done. By joining together, we can do more to find cures for childhood cancers. Children’s Cancer Fund supports families and doctors in the fight against childhood cancer. More than 500 circus-chic revelers attended the 2013 Ronald McDonald House of Dallas Young Friends spring party on March 22 at the Dallas Museum of Art, but this was not your typical circus. Co-chairs Claire Liedtke and Allie Stensrud planned quite the evening of fun at this year’s circus-themed “Beneath the Big Top” with the stunning visual drama of red and white stripe circus décor, the theatrical allure of the three-ring circus with the Dale Chihuly glass wall serving as a perfect backdrop. Reception Welcomed Colonel Klinge Jr. The Trinity Center ✯
The Trinity Trust hosted a reception to welcome Colonel Charles H. Klinge Jr., commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, at The Trinity Center. Dr. Gail Thomas welcomed him and introduced him. Col. Klinge spoke to the group about his organization’s role with the Trinity River Corridor Project and how they are working together with the City of Dallas, The Trinity Trust and other organizations. Benefit for AIDS Services Home of Faye Briggs ✯
Once again the gracious hostess, Faye Briggs, opened her mansion for a sponsor party; this time it was for “No Tie,” which benefits AIDS Services of Dallas. The event was held at Frontiers of Flight in April. There were numerous dinner hosts who paid $50 a head for their guests and served dinner at their homes or in restaurants. The evening culminated with a high spirited ‘60s themed shag-tastic party with DJs, auctions and Go-Go dancers. Steve Kemble was the Honorary Chair and David Nelson and Dennis Kershner chaired. This is the largest fundraiser for AIDS Services which helps low-income people with HIV/AIDS. This exhibition derived from a collaboration between the Dallas Museum of Art and the British Museum if Art is an internationally touring exhibition of more than 120 fascinating objects exploring the human form. Around the sixth century BC, Greek sculptors began to study the human body and worked unrelentingly to replicate its full proportions.

They used the finest athletes of the age as models and as the Greeks practiced sporting in the nude, sculptors were able to observe the human form in a wide range of poses.
They used these models as a basic form to create works centered on the favorite subject matter of the times- the Gods. They believed that their Gods were like humans, only more spectacular and beautiful and they worked tirelessly to create works they felt were perfect replications of ideal form and beauty. Likewise, the Greeks had a large amount of marble at their disposal which they used freely for architecture as well as art which contributed to delicately smooth sculptures we now hold as the classic Greek style. The Roman learned sculpture and painting primarily from the Greeks and they helped to advance the art form later in history. Iconic marble and bronze sculptures, vessels, funerary objects, and jewelry all explored the human form, some dating back to the second millennium B.C. This exhibition is organized by ten thematic sections depicting the various ways the Greeks experimented with representing the human body, including the Diskobolos sculpture from the 2nd century A.D. which has never before been shown in the United States. The exhibition is curated by Ian Jenkins and Victoria Turner. The curator of the Dallas presentation is Anne Bromberg, The Cecil and Ida Green Curator of Ancient and Asian Art.

Impressions of Europe Martin Rico ✯
This exhibition is the first ever comprehensive exhibition of the work of Martin Rico y Ortega, one of the most important Spanish painters of the second half of the 19th century. Rico was born in 1833 in Madrid, Spain during a time of civil unrest which eventually led to a civil war through the 1830s and 40s. In the 1860‘s, he traveled across Europe, hiking through Switzerland, Brittany and England to study the landscapes of those regions. His sketchbooks from this era show his varied interests. He also traveled to perfect his own style as he imitated the work of the leading landscape artists of the day until he discovered the light and life of Italy in 1873, where he truly developed his artistic style and created his most notable works. From his very first trip to the city until his death, the artist spent nearly every summer creating his romantic real-life art in Venice. He is best known for his light-filled paintings of the architecture and traditional scenes in and around Venice, Italy. Rico is revered for completing his works en plein air and many of his most beloved works were created as he traveled the waterways of venice via gondola, selecting the very best angles and scenes from that unique perspective. Many of his other subjects include urban landscapes of Paris and rural scenes from his native Spain. It was not only landscape setting that captured the artists attention. His earlier works indicate an interest in both European men and women and the animals which populated the cities. This exhibition will feature 106 works of art. Jasper Johns Often described as a Neo-Dadaist, artist Jasper Johns is primarily known for his paintings which draw their inspiration from pop culture. He is perhaps best known for his 1954 painting entitled “Flag” which was inspired by a dream. Many of his earlier works focused on simple elements such as flags, letters, numbers, maps and even targets. Johns later began to redefine his subjects and his treatment of subject matter so that he could convey the meaning of the work solely through the portrayal of conventional symbols and iconography. When the artist works with canvas, his approach is typically thick and painterly. He is also known to incorporate such media as encaustic and plaster relief into his works. When the artist works with sculpture, he creates the sculpture in wax first and then casts the work in bronze. He then treats the surface of the sculpture to develop a patina. In many of his sculptures during the wax phase of their creation, he creates impressions before casting them. Many of these impressions include letter blocks, keys, newsprint, footprints, hand prints and stencils. Since 1960, the artist has worked in a variety of printmaking techniques with a special emphasis in lithography. Using lithography he was able to print versions of the subjects which fill many of his paintings. In 1976, he partnered with Samuel Beckett to create a book entitled “Foirades/Fizzles” which includes 33 etchings and five text fragments by Beckett. Miller, Ross & Washburne Texas Hill Country & the LBJ Ranch ✯
From fields of endless bluebonnets and sunny wildflowers in Mason County, to old weathered schoolhouses in Gillespie County, and continuing on to the unique perspectives of the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, this exhibition of finely crafted photographic prints by Scot Miller, Alan Ross and R.P. Washburne features a wide range of stunning Texas Hill Country imagery. In addition to the fine prints on display, High Definition video of the LBJ Ranch shot by Artist-in-Park, Scot Miller, will be screened in the gallery throughout the exhibition along with audio recordings of telephone conversations between LBJ and others. Artist Scot Miller is a native Texan. He began working with photography in the early 1970s. Through his work, he attempts to inspire an appreciation and understanding of the uniqueness of places such as Yosemite, Walden, the Maine Woods, the Texas Hill Country and the Great Trinity Forest. Alan Ross served as Ansel Adams’ Photographic Assistant in Carmel from 1974 to 1979, and by doing so, has earned an international reputation as a specialist in the art of black-and-white photography, not just as an artist, but also as an educator and a master printer. He was personally selected by Ansel in 1975 to print his Yosemite Special Edition negatives. As an artist, Alan is best known for his tonally exquisite black-andwhite photographs of the American west. R.P. Washburne’s photographs have appeared regularly in D Magazine since 2005. He publishes travel stories alongside his photography in both D and the Robb Report and presently shoots Major League Baseball games for D Magazine’s sports blog, Inside Corner. In 2003, his first solo exhibit, a collection of photographs he shot of volunteer doctors in remote areas of Haiti, was shown in Chattanooga. The musical opened October 18, 1939 with music written by Richard Rogers and it was produced by George Abbot who was known
as the “Wizard of Broadway.” It ran for 249 performances at the Imperial Theatre and moved to Broadway in 1940. In the Broadway production, Desi Arnaz played the role of Manuelito Lynch. In 1940, a film adaptation of the musical was created and Desi Arnaz reprised his role as Manuelito and Lucille Ball played the role of Connie. Within the year, the two were married.

Fela!
Music & Lyrics of Fela Kuti ✯
This new musical is based on the music and lyrics of the late Nigerian singer, Fela Kuti, the founder of Afrobeat. The storyline follows Fela Kuti as young activist and composer who, in 1977 had nearly 1,000 Nigerian government soldiers who were tasked with ending his public performances at a nightclub in Lagos. This famed nightclub, Shrine in Lagos, had become a popular gathering place for youth who were rebelling against Nigeria’s military dictatorship at the time. The musical is described as part historical drama and part musicology lesson as it shows how Kuti blended the deeply tribal feel of the West African drumbeats, with the blues-style rough guitar riffs and paired that sound with call and response vocals. Kuti then fights to establish his own identity, wrestling with concepts of staying true to his civil activism contrasted by the overwhelming urge to give way to fame and hedonism that comes with it. He begins to use his fame to further his political pursuits as his lyrics become overtly political, criticizing Nigeria’s military regime. The regime responds with escalating acts of violence which culminate into an army raid of the Kalakuta republic, a communal compound which housed Fela Kuti’s band, his family and his recording studio. The raid resulted in the torture of Kuti, his wives, other communal members and the death of his mother who was thrown from a window. Fela passed away in August of 1997 reportedly from HIV/AIDS and over one million people attended his funeral. His legacy continues to be one of courage and his music is still alive in nearly 50 albums that are bought and heard all across the world where his message of political transparency, justice and human rights is still as relevant today as it was in the early days of his life. Six people who were thrust together by an unforeseen, possibly apocalyptic event must confront reality, make difficult decisions and come to grips with the death of the American dream. Professor Niles Harris, a cynical, middleaged arts professor is traveling through rural New Mexico with his trophy wife and former student, Vita. He has just suffered a nervous breakdown in his classroom and is en route to a sanitarium. Marion Clay, a middle-aged woman who was recently widowed by a famous artist, is traveling with her much younger boy toy, Salvatore Zappala. Zappala has big dreams of becoming a professional tennis player. They are forced to seek refuge in a small Catholic mission that holds a local ministry for the Native Americans. At the mission they find an elderly priest named Father Doherty and his acolyte and fashion son, Don Tabaha. As each of these two couples were traveling, individually, they were turned back by a highway roadblock. There has been an accident at a local nuclear facility and the New Mexico heat forced them to seek shelter. It soon becomes evident that each of these duets are in crisis. Vita, fears that her husband is declining rapidly in his current state of disillusionment with academia. Marion deeply loves her young lover and is in constant fear that he will leave her for someone younger and Father Doherty desperately wishes to keep his foster son from leaving for the high-paying research job he has just accepted. Together, in the face of what might be the end, they confront their realities, their fears and make decisions regarding their future. SpringFest Texas Ballet Theater is presenting a celebration of two cultures, life, heroism and Balanchine with the TBT Springfest. A featured artist is chosen every festival to represent Cottonwood’s marketing pieces, including t-shirts and posters.This year the featured artist is Michelle Mardis. Mardis has created original artwork for an album by legendary blues man, Tom McCoy. She also created cover art for The New Barker magazine. In the ArtStop Children’s area, children of all ages will have the opportunity to create sculpture hat from scraps, create a work of art in plaster contribute works to a giant community collage or sculpt using a real potter’s wheel. The festival will also feature live musical performances by world-renowned harpist, Merry Miller; acoustic duo, Brown and Wild Reister; Justin Cash, Aubrey Lynn England and Yellow Rose; Victor Andrada, the Jump Billy Trio; Shoot Low Sheriff and Spector’s Gun Collection. The festival also promises food and beverage from a variety of vendors throughout the festival and more at the Lakeside Courtyard. The Lakeside Courtyard is also home to Cottonwood’s Boutique, The Main Stage, Festival Headquarters, and the Artist Information Booth. An Evening with Robert M. Edsel The Greatest Treasure Hunt in History ✯
The Nasher Sculpture Center is pleased to present a lecture by Robert M. Edsel, best-selling author of Rescuing Da Vinci and Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. Edsel will speak as part of a book tour lecture series for his forthcoming release, Saving Italy: The Race to Rescue a Nation’s Treasures from the Nazis on May 14, 2013 at 7 p.m. in Nasher Hall. In August 1943, on the eve of the Allied invasion of Italy, Allied bombs threatened Michelangelo’s David and nearly destroyed Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. This is the blockbuster story of the race to save the world’s greatest masterpieces follows Monuments officers Deane Keller, a portrait painter and art professor, and Fred Hartt, a brilliant art scholar, serving alongside frontline troops, as they race to discover the location of billions of dollars of missing artwork taken from the great museums in Florence and Naples. With the whereabouts of the art unknown to the Allies, a heretofore obscure SS General holds the works hostage while negotiating a secret Nazi surrender with American spies. Following the lecture, Mr. Edsel will be having a signing of his new book, which will be available for purchase for $28.95. The lecture is open to the public and tickets are free, but RSVP is required. Robert M. Edsel is also the co-producer of the award-winning documentary film, The Rape of Europa. Academy Award winner George Clooney has assembled a stellar cast, including Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Jean Dujardin, and Bill Murray, for the film version of Mr. Edsel’s book, The Monuments Men, that is now in production.
